Trump says Iran ‘getting a lot closer’ to deal with US; Tehran also shares optimism

Even as President Donald Trump ratcheted up pressure on Tehran, saying he will decide on resuming strikes after holding talks with his envoys and regional leaders, Iran’s state media said on Saturday that the ongoing negotiations for a peace deal will not succeed if the United States does not show flexibility. Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, citing “an informed source close to the negotiating team,” said, “The Americans, although they have retreated from their initial approaches and accepted many of Iran’s positions, still have 3 serious sticking points that, if not resolved, the negotiations will not proceed.” Also Read: ‘Choose self-respect over green card, return home’: Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu urges Indians in US

The report said the first sticking point in the talks is the nuclear issue. It claimed that Iran has announced that it will not enter negotiations on the nuclear issue during this period. Tehran has set a condition that discussions on nuclear matters will be held only in the next round if the opposing side implements confidence-building measures fully. Tehran has said that the blocked funds must be deposited and released, which is the second and fundamental condition for Iran’s entry into negotiations, and without this happening, it will not enter negotiations at all. The third issue mentioned in a series of posts by Fars News Agency, which is close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was about Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said that though the United States insists that the strait must fully return to its previous condition, it is willing to commit itself only to returning the number of ships to the prior status. Tehran insists that ships must pass under Iran’s management and precisely along the route that it designates.

Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, which is close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said in a series of posts on X that the US negotiators have retreated from their initial approaches and accepted many of Iran’s positions, but there are still 3 serious sticking points.

Trump changing plans again? US military readies for potential Iran strikes as Iran warns of 'crushing blows'

US President Donald Trump on Friday (May 22) was disrupted during his rally in New York. “Take him home to mummy,” Trump said. “You know what he doesn’t say is his mum’s watching on television right now and she’s loving it.” Trump held a rally in Suffern, New York, on Friday as he sought to energise Republicans ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Speaking at Rockland Community College, Trump focused largely on economic issues and Republican victories but repeatedly drifted into attacks on Democrats, voter policies, and social issues. The president mocked a recent report released by the Democratic National Committee analysing the party’s 2024 election defeat. Referring to Democrats as ‘Dumocrats’, Trump claimed the report cost $10 million. Trump also highlighted several recent Republican victories, including races in Louisiana, Kentucky, and Georgia involving candidates aligned with his political movement. Celebrating one of the outcomes, Trump told supporters: “We knocked out somebody in Georgia, Raffensperger. We knocked him out.” At least three protesters were removed by police during the rally.
Trump pushes economic message
Although the event was promoted as an economy-focused speech, Trump frequently moved between topics, including voter identification laws, crime in American cities, transgender athletes, and criticism of former President Joe Biden. At one point, Trump complained about toiletries being locked behind security cases in pharmacies and also joked with the audience about what nickname he should use for Biden. Eventually returning to economic policy, Trump defended Republican tax cuts and accused Democrats of opposing them. “I cut your taxes, cut the taxes on workers, families, small businesses, who are the soul of this state,” Trump said. Listing provisions from the tax law, he added, “These are all Republican tax cuts.
Trump revisits Cognitive Test claims
During the speech, Trump once again spoke about taking the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a commonly used screening tool designed to identify early signs of cognitive decline. Trump incorrectly described the assessment as an intelligence test and repeated his claim that he had ‘aced’ it. As he has done at previous events, Trump described what he said was a difficult math-related question from the test. “Toward the end, like they had a question like: ‘Pick a number, sir, any number’. ‘Okay, 203 times nine, divide by two. Add on 1,324. Subtract 1292. Sir. Multiply it out one more time. By 19. What is the answer, sir?’ And I got it right.” He also claimed: “One doctor said, ‘I’ve been doing this test for 20 years. I’ve never seen anybody ace it’.” https://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-s-rustam-nabiev-summits-mount-everest-using-just-his-arms-1779478250107/embed
Familiar stories and campaign attacks
Trump also revisited several stories and talking points he has repeated at past rallies, including criticism of transgender athletes, comments about global leaders, and discussions about prescription drug prices. At one point, he shared an anecdote about a friend discussing the cost of GLP-1 weight-loss medication. “A friend of mine who’s very fat called me,” Trump said. “He’s begging me not to tell his name because he’s actually become quite famous. I tell the story often, so he calls me up … He said, ‘President, I’m in London. I just paid $87 for the fat drug. He said, " It’s the fat shot …I said, ‘It’s not working on you, Charles. Not working at all’… But he knows the price. He goes, ‘I paid $87, and in New York two weeks ago, I bought the same damn thing for $1,300’, and it really made an impression.” The rally marked another effort by Trump to solidify support in battleground districts while shaping the Republican message ahead of the midterm election season.

Donald Trump held a rally in New York ahead of the midterms, attacking Democrats, defending tax cuts and repeating claims about his cognitive test

Trump pushes economic message Although the event was promoted as an economy-focused speech, Trump frequently moved between topics, including voter identification laws, crime in American cities, transgender athletes, and criticism of former President Joe Biden. The Democrats voted against every one of these tax cuts.” Also Read: Chinese military officer posed as waitress to spy on US delegation during Beijing visit? Here's what we know Watch the video here

Republican leaders in the U.S. House have canceled a scheduled vote aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s war powers over Iran, triggering sharp political reactions in Washington. The resolution sought to require congressional approval for continued military action linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.

The move comes amid growing bipartisan unease over America’s military involvement in the region and follows a similar measure advancing in the Senate earlier this week.

GOP Leaders Cancel House Vote Aimed at Limiting Trump's War Powers on Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday (May 22) said that US President Donald Trump’s “disappointment” with NATO over its lack of support in the Iran war “will have to be addressed”. This comes after Trump on Thursday (May 21) announced that the US will deploy 5,000 additional troops to Poland, reversing earlier indications that a planned troop deployment had been cancelled. Meanwhile, NATO’s European members scrambled to seek clarity from Rubio on troop shifts by Washington.“The president’s views, frankly disappointment, at some of our NATO allies and their response to our operations in the Middle East – they’re well documented -- that will have to be addressed, that won’t be solved or addressed today,” Rubio said before meeting his alliance counterparts for NATO foreign ministers’ talks in Helsingborg, Sweden. He added that the upcoming alliance summit in Ankara would be “probably one of the more important leaders’ summits in the history of NATO.”
Trump’s ‘confusing’ troop moves
Trump announced on Thursday that he would send 5,000 troops to Poland, in an apprent U-turn of his earlier declaration of withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany following a spat with Chancellor Friedrich Merz. While the move was welcomed by NATO chief Mark Rutte and Poland’s foreign minister, concerns over a lack of coordination between the US and its allies surfaced.“It is confusing indeed, and not always easy to navigate,” said Swedish foreign minister Maria Malmer Stenergard.Several NATO ministers stated that a reduction in US troop presence in Europe was largely anticipated, as Washington shifts its focus toward other threats while European nations strengthen their own defence capabilities.“What is important is that it happens in a structured manner, so that Europe is able to build up when the US reduces its presence,” Norwegian foreign minister Espen Barth Eide said.
US troop decisions ‘not punitive’
Rubio has said that the troop shifts by Washington in Europe were not aimed at punishing allies for a lack of support over Iran.“The United States continues to have global commitments that it needs to meet in terms of our force deployment, and that constantly requires us to reexamine where we put troops. This is not a punitive thing, it’s just something that’s ongoing,” he said.

US President Donald Trump and secretary of state Marco Rubio issued sharp warnings to Iran on Thursday, reiterating that Tehran will not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons while also pushing back against any attempt to impose a toll system in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The coordinated messaging comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, renewed concern over global energy security, and ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump: No Ship Has Been Able To Go Past Hormuz Without US Nod

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday (May 21) slammed NATO for not supporting the US military campaign against Iran, accusing several member nations of benefiting from the alliance while failing to back the United States during a major conflict. Speaking to reporters in Miami before departing for NATO foreign ministers’ talks in Helsingborg, Sweden, Rubio said many alliance members agree that Iran poses a global threat and should not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. However, he expressed frustration that most countries stopped short of supporting US military action.“There are many countries in NATO that agree with us that Iran can't have a nuclear weapon, that Iran is a threat to the world,” Rubio told reporters.President Donald Trump “said, fine, I’m going to do something about it,” he said. “He’s not asking them to commit troops. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticised NATO allies for refusing to back the US campaign against Iran, saying Washington was “very upset” as tensions and the global energy crisis continue to escalate.

However, he expressed frustration that most countries stopped short of supporting US military action. “There are many countries in NATO that agree with us that Iran can't have a nuclear weapon, that Iran is a threat to the world,” Rubio told reporters. President Donald Trump “said, fine, I’m going to do something about it,” he said. “He’s not asking them to commit troops. He’s not asking them to send their fighter jets in. But they refuse to do anything.” “We were very upset about that,” Rubio added. US President Donald Trump on Thursday (May 21) said that Washington would eventually take control of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium as tensions remain despite the fragile ceasefire between the two countries. Did Mojtaba Khamenei issue order demanding enriched uranium must stay in Iran?

Iran has reportedly hardened its position in ongoing negotiations with the United States, insisting that its stockpile of enriched uranium must remain inside the country. The stance directly challenges one of Washington’s key demands aimed at limiting Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. The development adds fresh uncertainty to already fragile talks, as concerns grow over Iran’s expanding uranium programme and the possibility of another major diplomatic standoff in the Middle East.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that Iran must agree to strict terms limiting its military and nuclear capabilities, while Iran demands guarantees against future US strikes and removal of sanctions.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that negotiations with Iran were in the final stages, while warning of further attacks if Iran does not agree to a deal. “We’re in the final stages of Iran. We’ll see what happens. Either have a deal or we’re going to do some things that are a little bit nasty, but hopefully that won’t happen,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “We’re going to give this one shot. I’m in no hurry,” Trump said. “Ideally I’d like to see few people killed, as opposed to a lot. We can do it either way.” The remarks come six weeks after Trump paused Operation Epic Fury under a ceasefire arrangement, halting a conflict that had fuelled fears of a broader war in West Asia. ‘Iran talks in final stages,’ says Trump, warns of ‘nasty’ action as Tehran threatens wider war

Donald Trump spoke about the Iran conflict from Joint Base Andrews, warning once again that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon.” Trump also strongly defended Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him a “war-time prime minister” and claiming he was being treated unfairly by Israel’s leadership. The remarks come amid rising tensions in West Asia, ongoing diplomatic uncertainty and fears of a wider regional escalation involving the US, Israel and Iran.
