The Seattle Police Officers' Guild, on Friday (September 15), defended its official who made insensitive remarks about Indian-origin student Jaahnavi Kandula earlier this year, saying that some of the videos of police that have been shared, do not fairly elucidate the context of the story.

"The video captures only one side of the conversation. There is much more detail and nuance that has not been made public yet," the Seattle Police Officers Guild said in a statement.

It also released a letter written by its officer Auderer in which the latter said that he intended the comment as a mockery of lawyers.

In the letter dated August 3 to the Office of Police Accountability, Auderer said he laughed at the ridiculousness of how these incidents are litigated and the ridiculousness of how he has watched these incidents play out as two parties bargain over a tragedy, as per news agency PTI reports.

"At the time I believed the conversation was private and not being recorded. The conversation was also not within the course of my duties," he wrote in his letter to Gino Betts, director Office of Police Accountability.

The leaders and organisations representing the South Asian community in Seattle met Mayor Bruce Harrell, Police Chief Adrian Diaz and other city leaders on Saturday.

“Effective public safety is built on trust between City government and the communities we serve. When that trust is breached, it is the City's obligation to do the work necessary to restore and rebuild it,” Mayor Harrell was quoted as saying by Komo TV.

Harrell further said "We want to express our extreme condolences for your loss. Many comments that have been made do not reflect the sympathy and the empathy and the condolences that we have."

"I'm standing with our Chief of Police, Adrian Diaz and again with the Indian...The who's who in the Indian community in the greater region, are all coming together because of unfortunate and insensitive remarks that we believe were made. Making sure that our apologies as a city official are felt to your community and your family."

Indian student struck and killed by cop car in US to get her degree posthumously

A story that speaks of the brazen callousness of members of the police force there which seems to suggest that Indian lives just don't matter. A young Indian student from Andhra Pradesh was run over by a police cruiser as she was crossing the street in Seattle in January this year. The body camera recording in the aftermath of that Collision got some heartless and brutal comments.

Seattle cop makes racist remarks, laughing and downplaying death of an Indian student

A probe has been launched against a Seattle cop after bodycam footage showed him joking and laughing over the death of an Indian-origin woman who was killed by a police car in January this year.

In the clip that was released on Monday (Sept 11), officer Daniel Auderer can be heard joking that the student, Jaahnavi Kandula, had “limited value” and the city should “just write a check".

“She is dead,” Auderer says before bursting out laughing. “No, it’s a regular person,” he says, referring to Kandula, according to New York Post.

“Yeah, just write a check. 11,000 dollars. She was 26 anyway,” he said, misstating the victim’s age. “She had limited value.”

The video was released by the Seattle police department “in the interest of transparency”.

Kandula, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was struck and killed by Officer Kevin Dave, a colleague of Auderer, on January 23.

Auderer, who serves as the Seattle Police Guild’s vice president, further claims that he did not believe a criminal investigation was being conducted.

“I mean, he was going 50 mph. That’s not out of control. That’s not reckless for a trained driver,” Auderer said.

But a report released in June revealed that Dave was in fact driving 74 mph in a 25-mph zone while responding to a different “high-priority” call, local news outlet KIRO 7 reported.

The Seattle Community Police Commission (CPC) condemned the incident after the video was released, calling the conversation between Auderer and his colleague, "heartbreaking and shockingly insensitive."

''The people of Seattle deserve better from a police department that is charged with fostering trust with the community and ensuring public safety,'' the CPC said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Seattle police department has said that the matter is being probed by the Police Accountability Office, and that it won’t make any statement until the probe concludes.

Jaahnavi arrived in Seattle in 2021 to receive a master’s degree, and was pursuing a Master of Science in Information Systems at the College of Engineering. She was set to graduate this December.

The police patrol, which was being driven at top speed, ran over her at the intersection of Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street, Fox13 Seattle reported.

She was taken to Harborview Medical Center where she succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident.

UK: Indian student killed, another woman injured after double stabbing incident in London, three arrested

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasised that his administration was focused on "identifying the culprits, not punishing the victims" even as a committee of the House of Commons supported a vote on Wednesday (June 7) in support of former Indian foreign students who may be deported from Canada.

Speaking in Parliament, Trudeau said, “We are deeply aware of cases of international students facing removal orders over fraudulent college acceptance letters. Our focus is in identifying the culprits, not penalising the victims.”

He added, “Victims of fraud will have an opportunity to demonstrate their situation and present evidence to support their case. We remain committed to supporting victims of fraud as we evaluate each case.”

The House Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration passed a motion on Wednesday (June 6) evening urging for the deportation of the students to be stayed, while also providing them with a route to permanent residency, reported the Hindustan Times.

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser embraced a similar lenient approach towards the ex-students, as he tweeted, “Innocent victims will be given every opportunity to have their case considered fairly. Due to the complexity of the situation, we remain committed to working with CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency) to determine a fair outcome.”

Background

The students arrived in Canada between 2017 and 2019, and in some instances, in 2020. They started receiving notices from the CBSA in 2021 and last year for a hearing as the agency concluded the letters of offer of admission to a Canadian higher education institution, a requisite for their study permits, were “fake.”

Most of the distressed students were represented by the agent Brijesh Mishra of the Jalandhar-based counselling firm EMSA Education and Migration Services Australia.

The ex-students opined that they were being victimised for no reason. In an open letter under the banner of Victim Students released in March, they said, “We are desperate for justice; we are victims of fraud; we have no criminal level but facing a removal order.”

Fraser also tweeted, “Those who have taken advantage of people genuinely hoping to study here will face consequences for their actions.”

Two ex-students have received removal orders, including Lovepreet Singh, originally from Mohali. Many such ex-students are staging an ongoing protest in the Greater Toronto Area or GTA, which they say will continue till their cases are resolved and the order for Lovepreet Singh’s deportation revoked.

US: Three Indian students, all in their 20s, killed in road accident in western Massachusetts

Last week the shooting rampage that took place in Canada’s Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Ontario killed two people including a police officer, while at least three others were injured. Among those injured was a 28-year-old Indian student who has recently succumbed to the injuries sustained during last Monday’s shooting, said the police department.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) said Satwinder Singh, who was injured in the shooting last Monday in Milton, died at the Hamilton General Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. “Singh was an international student from India who was working part-time at MK Auto Repairs at the time of the shooting,” read the statement.

The HRPS went to express their condolences to the family and friends of the victims and the communities impacted by the “horrible tragedy”. The two others who died during the shooting rampage were Toronto Police Constable Andrew Hong, 48, and Shakeel Ashraf, 38, a mechanic who owned MK Auto Repairs. The gunman later identified as Sean Petrie was later shot dead by the police.

According to local media reports, Singh’s father was surrounded by friends and family when he gave the staff at the Hamilton General Hospital permission to pull his son off life support on September 17. “The father, who had not seen his son since before the pandemic, had just arrived earlier from Dubai, where he works as a truck driver,” said Sarabjot Kaur, a cousin who grew up with Singh to the Toronto Star newspaper.

Singh’s online GoFundMe page said that the former international student had been declared brain dead and was on life support. He was reportedly described as a “loving son, brother and grandson who will be missed daily.”

Singh had finished his MBA in marketing from India and was a student at Conestoga College who was working part-time at the MK Collision Centre in Milton. As of Sunday afternoon, Singh’s GoFundMe page has raised more than 35,000 dollars which would help his family to return his body to India.

Investigators believe the attack was “unprovoked” and the suspect was on the lookout for an officer, the local media reported. The shooting happened on September 12, following the gunman killing a Toronto police Const. Hong, inside a Tim Hortons, after which he went across the street carjacked another victim and continued to Milton where he shot three more people at the MK Auto Repairs.

Body of Indian medical student killed in Ukraine arrives in Bengaluru

An Indian student stranded in Ukraine due to Russian military actions became a good Samaritan when he assisted a Pakistani student in Kyiv in reaching the Romanian border, where she was evacuated to her motherland.

Ankit Yadav, who recently returned from the conflict-torn Ukraine, told ANI that he assisted her in getting to the Pakistani consulate, from where she was flown back to her hometown.

"I met her at a bunker on the evening of February 24. I was the only Indian and she was the only Pakistani in that bunker which was filled with Ukrainians. Due to the language barrier, we could not speak to anybody else. With rising tensions in Ukraine, we decided to make a plan to flee the city. We had planned to leave on February 26, but a curfew was imposed and we failed in our first attempt, "Yadav said.

Yadav, who is studying at a Kyiv institute, described his trauma after arriving at the Delhi international airport, saying they were not allowed to leave the bunker due to continuous bombardment and Russian military actions.

He claimed that procuring food was a problem because Ukrainians ate largely non-vegetarian food and supplies were running out.

"When I requested, they allowed me to leave the bunker on February 27 to get a nasal spray. That is when I fled to my hostel with a curfew in place, cooked food for both of us and returned," Yadav said. "With not enough food, on the night of February 27 we only consumed rice provided to us by the Ukrainians and slept," he added.

On February 28 when curfew lifted, Yadav said they managed to flee the bunker and find a store to replenish their supplies and then began planning to leave the city.

"About that time she received a call from the Pakistani Embassy. When she told them that she was still in Kyiv and did not have any other person from her country with her, the officials of the embassy requested that I accompany her to the border for safety concerns," he said.

After trudging for about 5 km to the railway station, Yadav said that they met some more students but could not board the overcrowded train because of which they missed first three trains.

"Luckily, we got the next train but there no empty seats left and we had to sit on the floor. Sometime later we heard a blast in our train and eventually, the train began to move slowly and took us to our destination," Yadav said.

The Pakistani girl, he said, then contacted her embassy, which arranged a taxi and arranged a bus with other Pakistani nationals to evacuate them to the Romania border.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan informed that over 11,000 Indians have been evacuated from Ukraine so far.

The government has deployed ‘special envoys’ to four neighbouring countries bordering Ukraine to coordinate and oversee the evacuation process of Indian nationals.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri is overseeing evacuation efforts in Hungary, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju in Slovakia, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in Romania and Gen VK Singh in Poland.

Indian student helps Pakistani girl flee Kyiv and reach Romania border: Report

Hundreds of Indian students stranded in the Ukrainian city of Sumy have said that it's only getting worse every passing day. On Thursday night (March 3), students of Sumy State University witnessed an airstrike, very close to their hostel premises.

"People were crying, many even fainted. It's getting difficult to handle our friends," said Faisal Ansari, a fourth-year medical student.

While speaking to WION, Mahek Shaikh, a first-year student said, "We were sitting in our rooms when we heard jets pass by. Our room lights started flickering and soon electricity and water supply went off. The entire city blacked out. We were immediately alerted to move to the bunkers."

On Friday, as news of the fire at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant broke, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted, "The Russian army is firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe."

He added, "Fire has already broken out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl! Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!"

Indian student in China found dead, family urges govt to help bring back body

India needs funds for education, but foreign funds come with strings attached. India's education system needs urgent reform and money.

This is a young country - a demographic jackpot. But no Indian university features among the top 100 in the world. It's not because of a lack of talent, but because of lack of capital.

India's education sector is starved of funds - major universities are still state-run and they depend on the government for cash.

In this budget, the government allocated Rs 99,300 crores to education - it sounds like a big sum, but it's not enough.

It was a modest increase from the previous budget, but academics say it won't fulfil the needs of educational institutions. That's where foreign players come in.

The entry of foreign universities can improve the system and make Indian universities more competitive, promote innovation and facilitate global academic cooperation.

But, how do you regulate such a setup? How do you make sure that foreign money doesn't influence Indian education?

That is the problem America is grappling with today. Since 2012, American colleges and universities reported more than 10 billion dollars in foreign assistance. In 2017, 91 institutions reported that they received more than one billion in gifts and contracts from foreign governments and non-government sources.

The money came from 105 countries. But, China has emerged as the biggest donor, now the Trump administration is cracking down. The initial probe suggests that the relationship between universities and foreign donors has evolved over time.

And the laws have simply failed to catch up as India opens its doors to foreign players, it must take lessons from America. A tight regulatory framework is needed to keep foreign investments in check.

The government should not leave academic research completely in the hands of private players, funding research critical to national development must remain a strategic priority.

Academic experts must be mobilised to review foreign grants, contracts, collaborations and affiliations. In the end, foreign funding must promote learning, academic autonomy and student engagement at universities.

India's campuses are centres of learning, free speech and debate, foreign funding should not be allowed to turn them into agenda pushers.
