Jasprit Bumrah was set to return to international cricket, after a long layoff due to back injury, in the India-Sri Lanka home ODIs. On Monday (January 09), it has been confirmed that the star pacer will not return for the SL ODIs as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sources have informed that a call has been taken not to rush him into action so soon. Thus, Bumrah is not even among the players who have reached Guwahati, the venue for the three-match ODI series opener on Tuesday (January 10).

It is to be noted Bumrah has been out of action since September 2022, which kept him out of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition in Australia as well. Before that, the pacer had also missed the Asia Cup 2022, in the UAE, due to injury concerns. On January 03, the BCCI added Bumrah to Rohit Sharma-led India's ODI squad for the Lanka series, on the recommendation of the All-India Selection Committee. "The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India's ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka," BCCI had said in a media release.

"The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He will be joining the Team India ODI squad soon," the BCCI had further mentioned in the statement. In Bumrah's absence, India will rely on pacers Md Shami, Md Siraj, Umran Malik and uncapped player Arshdeep Singh. Hardik Pandya is also an option but it will be interesting to see if he bowls in the SL series.

Hardik Pandya's India started 2023 with a bang by defeating Sri Lanka by two runs in the first T20I of the three-match series, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Tuesday (January 03). Hardik & Co. were asked to bat first and rode on Ishan Kishan's 37, Deepak Hooda's 41* and Axar Patel's 31* to post 162-5. In reply, Shivam Mavi's 4 for 22 and Umran Malik's 2 for 27 led to SL being all-out for 160 on the final ball to lose by two runs.

Ahead of the second and penultimate tie, to be held in Pune on Thursday (January 05), former Indian stumper and selector Saba Karim has shared words of wisdom for new captain Hardik.

Speaking to India News, Karim pointed out, "I think he needs to focus on his attitude. Everyone likes him as a player because of his attitude. As a captain, if you show a lot of emotions on the field, players will get fearful. I don’t think that’s the right thing for a team to grow. You have to trust your players."

Karim further opined, "I liked two things about captain Hardik Pandya. He said that he wanted to bat regardless of the toss. It means he knows the challenges ahead; bilateral matches are aside, but you have to learn something in every match and put your team in a tough situation."

“The second thing is that debutant Shivam Mavi bowled in the powerplay. It means that, as a captain, he wants to lead by example,” added the former cricketer.

India and Sri Lanka will lock horns in the second and penultimate T20I on Thursday evening as the hosts will be eager to wrap up the series in style. Hardik, who hasn't been named as the official full-time T20I skipper, will be desperate to make a mark as a leader -- with strong rumours of him being looked upon as the future white-ball captain -- and take India to a series win.

Hardik himself had a decent outing in the Mumbai game, scoring 29 runs and returning with 3-0-12-0 with the ball.

After India's T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, the focus has now shifted to the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which will be held in India later this year. Thus, Team India's ICC-title drought continues. The last ICC title they won came in 2013 when they lifted the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni. Since then, the Men in Blue appeared in three ICC finals and ended as semi-finalists on four occasions. Nonetheless, a title triumph continues to evade them.

As the preparations have begun for the ODI World Cup, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir has pointed out a glaring issue that has resulted in India's failures in the last two World Cups.

"They got to play together. I think the biggest mistake that Indian cricket has made in the last two World Cups has been that these guys have not played enough cricket together. Tell me, how many times have we got the best playing 11 in the park? We haven't; only during the World Cup we decided to have the best playing 11, but unfortunately, that was never the best playing 11. So, these guys have to play enough of white ball cricket, especially for the 50 overs World Cup together irrespective of whether they want to take a break from the T20 or from the IPL," Gambhir said on Star Sports show.

In addition, Gambhir -- the T20 WC and ODI WC medallist -- stated that if any player wants to take a rest, they can skip a few matches in the shortest format or even the IPL but play the ODIs.

Gambhir added, "If they want to take a break, people who play more than three formats, they can definitely take a break from T20 cricket, but surely not from the ODI format. If the franchisee has to suffer, they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder, not the IPL. IPL is just a by-product. So, if India goes out and wins the World Cup, that is the bigger ovation, that is the bigger ring. For example, if an important player does miss the IPL games so be it because IPL happens every year and the World Cup happens only once in four years. So, for me, I think winning the World Cup is far more important than winning the IPL."

Rohit Sharma-led Indian ODI team will commence their preparations for the World Cup with a home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 10. They will look for a winning start in what is a crucial year for Team India.

'Biggest mistake India made in last two World Cups...' - Gautam Gambhir points out glaring issue

2023 is an important year for Team India. After the T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, where they were hammered in the semi-finals, India will now look to end their nine-year-long-ICC-title-drought in 2023 with a chance at the mega title in the forthcoming WTC final (where India haven't confirmed a slot yet) and ODI World Cup, to be hosted by India later this year.

India, under Hardik Pandya, started 2023 with a thrilling two-run win over Sri Lanka on Tuesday (January 03) in the series opener of the three-match T20Is. Hardik has always been a valuable all-rounder for India, especially in white-ball formats, and taken over as the T20I captain in Rohit Sharma's absence. He has not been officially named as the T20I skipper but is being touted to be the next white-ball captain after Rohit. For the upcoming home SL ODIs, Hardik even replaced KL Rahul as the new vice-captain. Thus, with his stoks rising, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir has urged India to find Hardik's like-for-like replacement as they will be in 'serious trouble' if something happens to the 29-year-old.

Gambhir opined that India need to rope in a backup for Hardik in the white-ball setup. "They need to quickly identify a backup for Hardik; if something happens to him, India will be in serious, serious trouble," Gambhir told Star Sports.

India have the likes of Shardul Thakur, Venkatesh Iyer, etc. who can fill in for Hardik as fast-bowling all-rounders but will hope for the star player to remain fit with some big ICC events lined-up.

Gambhir, the T20 WC and ODI WC medallist, also spoke at length on the workload management issue. He believes India's key players will have to prioritise playing ODIs with the World Cup to be held in India later this year. "This year [the core group should be focusing on] ODIs for sure. After Rishabh Pant was moved out of the ICU at Max hospital, Dehradun, the wicketkeeper-batter is set to be airlifted to Mumbai where he will continue to be treated for multiple injuries (at the Kokilaben Ambani Hospital) he suffered during a freak car accident on December 30. The incident took place on the Delhi-Dehradun highway which shocked the entire cricketing fraternity. On Wednesday (January 04), the decision to airlift Pant from Dehradun to Mumbai was taken by the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah after a review meeting with the board's medical team (as per a report in Cricbuzz).

After being taken to Mumbai, the 25-year-old Pant will be monitored by the BCCI panel doctors who will go through his reports and assess his condition. As per reports, the BCCI is also mulling to send Pant overseas, preferably London, for treatment under experts if deemed necessary. It is to be noted that Pant had rammed his car into a divider in the wee hours on December 30 (Friday). He was driving alone when he suffered injuries following the car accident.

Pant -- India's first-choice keeper-batter across formats -- had suffered multiple injuries in the car accident. The injuries included two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee whereas the youngster also hurt his right wrist, ankle, toe and suffered abrasion injuries on his back. He is set to be out of cricketing action for some months, at least till the first half of 2023. He is very likely to miss the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, on home soil, and also be out of IPL 2023.

Pant's car accident shocked the entire cricketing fraternity. Recently, former Indian captain, Kapil Dev told ABP News, "This is a lesson. When I was still an up-and-coming cricketer, I had a motorcycle accident. From that day onwards, my brother didn't even let me touch the motorbike. I'm just thankful to God that Rishabh Pant is safe. Yes, you have a good-looking car with great speed but you have to be careful. You can easily afford a driver, you don't have to drive it yourself." He added, "I understand that one has hobbies or even passion for such things, it's natural to have it at his age, but you also have responsibilities. Only you can take care of yourself. You have to decide things for yourself."

BCCI to airlift Rishabh Pant to Mumbai, mulling to send him overseas for expert care

After an ordinary run in 2022, Team India kicked off their run in 2023 with a narrow win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I of their three-match series on home soil. The year 2023 is an important one for the national side with the WTC final, in June, and the ODI World Cup later this year. It will be hosted entirely by India and Rohit Sharma & Co. have lots to do if they wish to win the ODI WC and end their nine-year-long ICC-title drought.

With the commencement of 2023, BCCI held a review meeting with head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit and NCA chief VVS Laxman to discuss the road ahead for Team India and review last year's T20 World Cup debacle. As per reports, 20 players have been shortlisted for the marquee event and their fitness and progress will be closely monitored by the BCCI and team management in the run-up to the ODI WC. Amid all this, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has backed Rohit and Virat Kohli to come good and believes they can anchor the innings as they play spin really well. Gambhir feels Rohit and Kohli will play a 'massive role' in the upcoming WC.

"I feel people like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and all those guys who can anchor their innings, who probably can play spin really well will play a massive role the coming World Cup," said Gambhir, while speaking on Star Sports show 'Road to World Cup Glory'. He also asked the team management to identify players who can fit into the template they are looking to form for the big event. "First, you need to identify the players who got that fearless approach and probably in a format like 50 overs you need to have a mixture of every kind of player. There are players who can anchor their innings. Change in role has also made a huge difference. During that time we had only one new ball, now we have got two new balls with five fielders inside.

"So, the role of a part timer has gone out of the window. The reverse swings, you don't see enough of reverse swings anymore, you don't see enough of chase for the finger spinners as well. But, I always feel that when we talk about this new approach, which India always talks about, the template and stuff, you have got to identify players who can adapt those roles or that template very easily," Gambhir asserted.

Gambhir added that if some players cannot adapt to the new template, there is no point in trying to fit them into the side. "Some people just cannot adapt to that template so why push them to play in a certain way which doesn't come naturally to them. So, for me, I think identifying players and at the same time getting the right mix is very important, rather than thinking that we have to play at a certain template so we got to select all the 15 with a similar mind-set or with a similar template," he added.

It is believed that Rohit, Kohli and few others will not play a lot of T20Is this year and shift their focus entirely on the ODI WC. The upcoming 50-over showpiece event can be Rohit and Kohli's last international appearance and the duo will be desperare to sign off on a high.

But, I always feel that when we talk about this new approach, which India always talks about, the template and stuff, you have got to identify players who can adapt those roles or that template very easily," Gambhir asserted. Also read: BCCI to airlift Rishabh Pant to Mumbai, mulling to send him overseas for expert care Gambhir added that if some players cannot adapt to the new template, there is no point in trying to fit them into the side.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma will play massive role: Gambhir pins hopes on senior pros for 2023 ODI World Cup

India's ODI World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev doesn't shy away from expressing his views on several aspects pertaining to Indian cricket. As India have shifted their focus towards the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be hosted entirely by the country later this year, Kapil made a bold claim saying that if the team is dependent on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and 2-3 other players to win the title, the dream of winning the mega event won't be fulfilled.

Speaking to ABP News, Kapil pointed out that though India have the quality to win the ODI WC, they need to start looking beyond Kohli and Rohit and have at least 5-6 match-winners. He opined, "If you want to win the World Cup, the coach, selectors, and team management will have to make some tough decisions. Personal interests will have to take a backseat and they will need to think about the team. Aap Virat pe, Rohit pe ya 2-3 players pe bharosa karenge ki woh hume World Cup jeetayenge toh aisa kabhi bhi nahi ho sakta (If you think Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and 2-3 players will win us the World Cup then that's never going to happen). You should believe in your team. Do we have such a team? Definitely. Do we have certain match winners? Yes, of course! We have players who can win the World Cup."

Kapil further asserted, "There are always a couple of players who turn out to be the pillars of your side. The team revolves around them but we need to break that and build at least 5-6 players like that. That's why I say, you can't depend on Virat and Rohit. You need players who fulfill each of their responsibilities. The youngsters will need to come forward and say 'it is our time'."

Rohit-led India will depend on the captain and Kohli -- who are believed to make their last international appearance during the forthcoming World Cup -- but will be desperate for the likes of Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, etc. to stand tall and win some games during the showpiece event. Last time when India co-hosted the ODI WC, they won the championship under MS Dhoni. In 2013, India won its last ICC title and, hence, will be eager to end their nine-year-long ICC-trophy drought later this year. For that, they will have to adopt a more aggressive approach as a team and hope for more match-winners to raise their hands at regular intervals.

Recently, Kapil also reacted to Rishabh Pant's freak car accident, on December 30 on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. In this regard, he said, "This is a learning. When I was still an up-and-coming cricketer, I faced a motorcycle accident. From that day onwards, my brother didn't even let me touch the motorbike. I'm just thankful to god that Rishabh Pant is safe. Yes, you have a good-looking car with great speeds but you have to be careful. You can easily afford a driver, you don't have to drive it alone." He added, "I understand that one has hobbies or even passion for such things, it's natural to have it at his age, but you also have responsibilities. Only you can take care of yourself. You have to decide things for yourself."

Pant, on Monday (January 02), came out of the ICU at Max hospital, Dehradun as the keeper-batter is fighting hard to recover fully following his serious accident.

'Can't depend on Kohli, Rohit to win us ODI WC, we need...': Ex-India captain Kapil Dev's BOLD remark

On Tuesday (January 03), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) added Jasprit Bumrah to India's ODI squad for their forthcoming home series versus Sri Lanka. Thus, the premier pacer returns to the national side after a long time following his back injury in September. Due to a stress fracture in his lower back, Bumrah was out of the T20 World Cup and even missed the Asia Cup. He was ruled out of India's remaining assignments following the T20 WC and wasn't named in the initial ODI squad, for the SL series, before being added on Tuesday.

After being ruled out in the second half of 2022, Bumrah had been rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru since then. Here's India's revised squad following Bumrah's inclusion:

Hardik Pandya continues to be the vice-captain in the ODI squad despite Bumrah's addition. While the 28-year-old pacer has returned, there is no update on all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The 34-year-old star player had sustained a knee injury during the Asia Cup and has been out of action since then.

Before the three ODIs versus the Lankans, which commences on January 10, Hardik will lead an inexperienced Indian T20I line-up in the three-match series versus the Asian champions Sri Lanka, starting on Tuesday evening. The series opener will be held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

On Friday (December 30), Rishabh Pant was involved in a serious car accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. While he is now at the ICU at the Max Hospital, Dehradun, the 25-year-old is getting provided with the best medical help possible and is en route to recovery. He suffered several injuries due to the freak car accident but is believed to be out of danger and is safe.

Many former and active cricketers, celebrities from other fields and even Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi have reacted to Pant's accident and prayed for his speedy recovery and return to the 22-yard cricket strip. Kapil Dev, India's 1983 World Cup-winning skipper, also joined the bandwagon and thanked god for Pant being safe. He, however, shared valuable advice for the youngster. Kapil feels Pant should hire a driver and not drive himself, to avoid such horrific accidents and a plethora of injuries.

Meanwhile, the medical team monitoring Pant's progress shared an important update. The medical team member told TOI, "It is important that Rishabh gets sufficient time to rest, not just physically but mentally too. He is still in pain due to the injuries sustained in the accident. He has to speak to visitors, which drains his energy that should be preserved for faster recovery. People planning to visit him should avoid it for now and let him rest.

With Pant being a big name, the problem of frequent visits have kept the hospital authorities on their toes. "Hospital visiting hours are from 11am to 1pm and 4pm to 5pm and only one visitor can meet a patient at any given time. Rishabh Pant’s case is a high-profile one due to which more visitors are streaming in and hence this problem,” another staff member added.

'I understand one has hobbies but...' Kapil Dev reacts to Rishabh Pant's accident, gives a valuable advice

Last week, the BCCI selection committee announced India's white-ball squads for the home T20Is versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on January 03 in Mumbai. Hardik Pandya was named the T20I captain whereas regular skipper Rohit Sharma will return from a thumb injury to take charge of the ODI line-up versus the Lankans. While nothing has been revealed whether Hardik is set to become the next T20I captain, it is believed that the official announcement will follow suit sometime later this year (with seniors focused on 2023 ODI World Cup). Moreover, he is also being touted as Rohit's successor in limited-overs. He is also named as the ODI vice-captain despite KL Rahul's presence (who held onto the post for a year until the recent squad announcement).

Hardik has impressed many with his calm demeanour as captain -- especially during IPL 2022 for the eventual champions Gujarat Titans. As a result, he has led India on a few occasions last year. While talks are on with many supporting Hardik as a long-term captaincy option, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has pointed out a crucial factor which needs to be taken into consideration before promoting the 29-year-old all-rounder.

Speaking during an interaction on Star Sports, Pathan said, "The captaincy Hardik has done, whether it was for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL or at the start for India, I felt the communication was extremely good. He was seen as very agile." He added, "When there was talk about his captaincy, I was extremely impressed with his approach but along with that India will have to keep in mind that if you are making him the long-term captain, they will have to concentrate a lot on his fitness, whether you talk about him or the team management. It will be very crucial going ahead."

Hardik will lead a young T20I team when India take on Sri Lanka in the series opener on Tuesday (January 03) in Mumbai. It will be the start of a new era with many senior players not being part of the series. It will be interesting to see how Hardik manages himself and continues to perform the role of an all-rounder when leading the side (he bowled in excess of 30 overs and batted at No. 4 mostly during IPL 2022) as he continues to make rapid strides as a leader.

'They'll have to...' - Irfan points out 'crucial' factor if Hardik Pandya becomes India's long-term skipper

The Indian senior men's cricket team had an ordinary run in 2022. The year saw them dominate the T20I format enroute to the World Cup but they were whitewashed in three ODIs in South Africa, lost a golden opportunity to win a Test series in SA and England (losing the one-off Test in Edgbaston), didn't qualify for Asia Cup 2022 final and bowed out of the T20 WC in the semi-finals. Further, they even lost to Bangladesh (2-1) in three ODIs in the Bangla Tigers' den. Hence, a review meeting was held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which was attended by President Roger Binny, Secretary Jay Shah, head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma.

One of the most-talked about aspects in Indian cricket, in 2022, was the regular injury concerns. After conceding the ODI series with loss in the second game, Rohit had stated in the post-match presentation, "I mean there are definitely a few injury concerns. We need to try and get to the bottom of it. I don't know what exactly it is. Maybe they're playing too much cricket. We need to try and monitor those guys, because it's important to understand when they come for India, they need to be 100%, in fact more than 100%." Thus, the Yo-Yo Test -- introduced during Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri era -- has returned whereas BCCI has also added a new selection criteria by introducing the Dexa test for Indian players.

What is Dexa test? All you need to know

It is to be noted that Dexa, also called the 'bone density test', is an X-ray technology (dual-energy x-ray) used to measure bone strength. It, in turn, will help find out if the player taking the test is at risk of breaking or losing bones. In addition, it will help in measuring body composition as well as noting body fat and muscle mass.

Meanwhile, the National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman was also part of the meeting, who also served as the stand-in coach for Team India at regular intervals last year. The NCA will now also closely work with all IPL franchises in workload management for 20 targeted players for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Moreover, players have been asked to not miss international fixtures going forward as India commence preparations for the home ODI WC, later this year, in a bid to end their nine-year-long ICC-title-drought.

Much to the relief for Indian cricket fans, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that Rishabh Pant is stable and undergoing scans at Max Hospital, Dehradun following a horrific accident on Friday morning (December 30). The swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter was returning to Delhi from Uttarakhand when his car collided with a divider and caught fire. He was driving the Mercedes and was reportedly alone when he somehow managed to get out of the car and was rushed to the hospital.

After the disturbing accident pictures went viral on social media platforms, wishes poured for Pant. Amid all this, Jay Shah confirmed that Pant is stable and out of danger. Shah tweeted, "My thoughts and prayers are with Rishabh Pant as he fights his way back to recovery. Ever since the news broke out, the cricketing fraternity has been wishing for Pant's speedy recovery. The likes of R Ashwin, Virender Sehwag, Ricky Ponting, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, Litton Das, Dinesh Karthik, Rashid Khan and many others have been for the 25-year-old's recovery.

Recently, the BCCI selectors had announced India's white-ball squads for the upcoming home series versus Sri Lanka -- starting on January 3 -- where Pant's name was missing. As per reports, he was kept out of the white-ball assignments for him to work on the niggle on his knee and return for the home Tests versus Australia. At present, Pant is stable but nothing can be said about when he will attain full fitness following the accident.

Rishabh Pant accident: He is stable and undergoing scans, confirms BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

Just two days before India's first international assignment in 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a review meeting to analyse India's T20 World Cup 2022 performance with regular captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid and NCA chief VVS Laxman. The meeting, as per a report in India Today, will take place on January 01 in Mumbai.

The likes of Rohit, Dravid and even Laxman will be present as the board will have a review of India's dismal campaign in the 2022 edition of the T20 WC, held in Australia. Heading into the T20 WC as the No. 1 ranked T20I side, India had everything going for them as they topped their group with wins over Pakistan, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, respectively, but lost to South Africa, by a close margin, before falling flat in the semi-finals versus eventual winners England (by ten wickets). India's orthodox approach with the bat and some ordinary fielding efforts -- especialy in the game versus the Proteas -- were criticised by many. Moreover, Yuzvendra Chahal wasn't given a single game which raised eyebrows.

Will some big decisions be taken post the BCCI review? Will it be split captaincy and split coaching for India? Only time will tell...

After the T20 WC, Indian team have tried to tweak their line-up and are aiming to build a new squad around Hardik Pandya. Hardik hasn't officially taken over as the T20I captain but many believe he is set to take over with senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli, etc. shifting their focus towards the 2023 ODI World Cup; likely to be their swansong from international cricket.

For the home T20Is versus SL, BCCI announced a fresh 16-man squad under Hardik. The likes of Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, etc. have been named in the squad sans Rohit, Kohli, KL Rahul, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

It is believed that Pant has suffered some injuries but is out of danger. A statement from the hospital is expected to be out later in the day. Pant has been India's mainstay across formats. He was part of India's 2-0 Test series win versus Bangladesh, in Bangladesh, but hasn't been named by the BCCI selectors in India's white-ball squads for the upcoming home assignments versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03.

As per reports, Pant had been advised to work on his fitness as he had been carrying a niggle on his knee for quite sometime. He was expected to return for India's four Tests versus Australia, on home soil, before the accident took place on Friday morning. One hopes for his speedy recovery and return to the 22-yard cricket strip sooner than later.

'Bounce back Rishabh' - R Ashwin, Virender Sehwag & others pray for Pant's speedy recovery

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's T20I and ODI squad for their upcoming home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on January 3. While some big names weren't part of the Hardik Pandya-led T20I squad, the ODI line-up feature Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the likes with no mention of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant (due to a niggle on his knee) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Moreover, all-rounder Hardik was also promoted as the ODI vice-captain despite Rahul's presence. Ever since Rohit took over, Rahul has been his deputy across formats but a string of low scores and Hardik's rise as a leader has resulted in the former losing out on his vice-captaincy post. In the Bangladesh Tests, Rahul had scores of 22, 23, 10, and 2. Even in the ODIs, he scored a majestic 73 in the series opener before not doing anything significant (scoring 14 and 8 respectively) in the last two games. Thus, he knows he has to remain consistent or will lose his ODI spot as well in a World Cup year, with the mega event to be held later in 2023 in India.

Ahead of the SL ODIs, which commences on January 10, former Indian opener and Rahul's IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) mentor Gautam Gambhir shared his take on the right-hander's form. "You can only control what you can control. You can't control selectors, you can't control what's going to happen in the next series. You got three ODIs against Sri Lanka. If you play that, just be in the present. That's all you can control. The moment you start to think about uncontrollable things, you're putting undue pressure on yourself,” Gambhir said in Star Sports' A Chat with Champions.

'The moment you start...' - Gautam Gambhir shares his take on KL Rahul's struggles ahead of SL ODIs

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced India's squads for the white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway next year on January 03 in Mumbai. As expected, Hardik Pandya has once again been named as the captain of the T20I squad with no big guns available whereas Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the ODI line-up after his thumb injury during the Bangladesh tour. Hardik has also been promoted as the new ODI vice-captain (despite KL Rahul's presence).

Some of the notable factors from the T20I line-up is that Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the vice-captain, which doesn't include the likes of Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc. Meanwhile, it is a young squad including the likes of Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar (recently bought by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 mini-auction for INR 5 crores), etc. It gives one a sneak peek of the selectors' mindset keeping in view the next edition of the T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and USA, in 2024.

Talking about the ODI squad, Pant remains absent from it as well. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also not part of both squads. The biggest omission is Shikhar Dhawan, who has struggled for runs and has seen a sharp decline in his strike rate amid rising stocks of Kishan and Gill. Meanwhile, Md Shami also returned whereas the likes of Rahul and Kohli will feature straightaway in the 50-over series. There's no mention of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja as the duo are expected to return for the New Zealand white-ball series at home.

BCCI's official Twitter handle released the squads via separate posts:

IND vs SL: Hardik Pandya to lead in T20Is, promoted as ODI vice-captain with Shikhar Dhawan dropped

India's No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara revealed the reason behind team management's plan to promote Axar Patel ahead of Virat Kohli in the batting order during their nervy 145-run chase versus Bangladesh in the just-concluded second and final Test in Dhaka. With India being reduced to 12 for 2 in the final session on Day 3, many expected Kohli to walk out at his usual batting slot; i.e. No. 4.

Nonetheless, the Rahul Dravid-led team management surprised one and all and sent out Axar. Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian opener-turned-commentator, wasn't impressed with the move and told on Sony Sports, "It didn't send a good message to Kohli. He is the best batsman in the world. Unless Kohli himself asked for it, then it's a different matter. We don't know what happened in the changing room. But it's hard to understand. Axar has played well, of course."

Jadeja, part of the Hindi panel, opined, "He is the world's best player. 15 overs were left. Saba Karim said it could have been because of the left-right combination, which is an obvious thought, but then I feel - did Rishabh Pant take a sleeping pill? I will also say that it is easy for us to say this from here; we don't know if someone was not feeling well."

Pujara, who won the Player-of-the-Series award, opened up on the move after the series triumph. Talking to the broadcasters, he gave an insight behind Axar's promotion and said, "It was a very good move because among their three strike bowlers, two were left-arm spinners. Axar is a left-hander, so he was sent to tackle them and to have a batter who can bat sensibly in the initial period against the Kookaburra ball. It was a crucial move for us. That was an important phase of the game where we didn't want to lose too many wickets in the evening, and he could have batted cautiously. So I was not surprised. When you are chasing a 145-run total, every run is important, and the way he batted, his innings was very valuable for us."

The left-handed Axar played a cautious 69-ball 34 whereas Kohli departed for 1 during India's three-wicket win over the Bangla Tigers. Shreyas Iyer's 29 not out and R Ashwin's 62-ball 42* held their nerves and took India home after they were reeling at 74-7 in the morning session of Day 4.

Ishan Kishan created history by becoming the fourth Indian to enter the 200-run club in ODIs during the India-Bangladesh series in the latter's own backyard. Kishan opened the innings in the third ODI, on December 10 in Chattogram, with Shikhar Dhawan, in regular captain Rohit Sharma's injury, and made the most of his chances by slamming a mammoth 131-ball 210; the fastest and youngest to score a 200 in the format.

After the knock, the 24-year-old Kishan is expected to don the blues for a long time and has a strong chance to stake his claim in India's white-ball sides following his marathon inning versus the Bangla Tigers. Coming from Jharkhand, he is reckoned as the next-big-thing for India after MS Dhoni. Dhoni, who put Jharkhand on the map, had a stellar career for Team India -- with 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and leading India to three ICC titles -- has been Kishan's idol and the youngster reacted to him being compared with MSD.

Speaking to OneCricket, as quoted by News 18, Kishan said, "I love Gilchrist’s batting and wicketkeeping but about Dhoni Bhai; I’ve seen him on and off the field. The way he keeps his calmness intact and meets everyone. So, these things also matter in life, like how you function and get to know such a big player who functions in what way. So, I think, he has helped me a lot to understand those things."

Kishan added, "I take it [comparison with Dhoni] in a very positive way. I think, ‘Ok. Because he has done enough. He made us win ODI & T20 World Cups and the Champions Trophy. There are so many things and even I want to be in that situation where I can make my team win."

Kishan will be looking forward to India's upcoming white-ball series, at home, versus Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia before IPL 2023. The left-hander will want to remain consistent and aim for few more daddy hundreds to cement his place in the side.

If people are comparing me with MS Dhoni, I’ve got something in me, says Team India opener Ishan Kishan

India's ongoing tour of Bangladesh saw Ishan Kishan create history. Kishan featured in India's playing XI in the third and final ODI, with regular captain Rohit Sharma being injured, and opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan. He looked in his elements from the word go and smashed a magnificent 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes, to become the fourth Indian to enter the 200-run club in ODIs.

Kishan became the youngster and fastest to score an ODI double ton. Overall, he became only the seventh to join the elite club -- comprising legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit, etc. Despite his recent heroics, the 24-year-old remains grounded and is destined for more success. Recently, a fan requested Ishan to give an autograph on his cellphone -- above MS Dhoni's. To this, the youngster won hearts with his gesture.

Kishan said in a video shared on Twitter, “Mahi bhai ka hai signature aur uske upar bol rahe hain mera karne…mereko thoda ho nahi raha hai (This is Mahi bhai’s signature and you are telling me to sign above it. I can’t do this). "Mahi bhai ka signature hai upar, abhi humlog utna pahunche nahi hai wahan par…neeche karta hun “I have not reached the level of MS Dhoni, I will sign in the bottom)," added the Indian keeper-batter. Dhoni retired from international cricket in mid-2020. However, he remains a big name in world cricket. During his illustrious career from 2004-2019, the former Indian captain earned accolades for his glovework, tactical acumen as a leader, finishing, and unorthodox keeping skills along with his ability to stay calm under pressure.

Dhoni ended with 17,266 international runs, 108 half-centuries, 16 tons -- including a double century in Tests -- 359 sixes, 634 catches, 195 stumpings and led India to all three major ICC titles. He remains active in the IPL and will lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2023 edition.

Virat Kohli had had an eventful 2022. He started the year by leading India in the three Tests versus hosts South Africa and after the 2-1 series loss, he stepped aside from the red-ball captaincy after having resigned as the T20I skipper and being sacked as the ODI captain. His fallout with the BCCI top management became a huge talking point. After that, the Indian cricket fans desperately waited for Kohli's return to form. While he did manage few good scores, he remained below-par especially during IPL 2022, India tour of England before being rested for the white-ball tour of West Indies.

Following the white-ball series versus the Windies, Kohli returned to the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE, where he ended his two-year-long century drought and ended as the second-highest run-getter. Since then, he has remained among runs -- especially in the shortest format of the game. He ended as the highest run-getter in the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia, with 296 runs in six matches and recently scored his first ODI ton, since August 2019, during the ongoing Bangladesh tour. Recently, in a video shared by BCCI’s official Twitter handle on Thursday (December 15), Indian head coach Rahul Dravid opened up on Kohli and heaped praise on him for his hard work and approach towards the game. Dravid, in particular, lauded the former Indian captain for his preparation levels, which can be a great lesson for youngsters.

Dravid said, "Virat has an incredible template. For me, he has been one of the standouts over the last year and a half. Just watch the way he trains and prepares. That never changes with respect to whether he is doing well or not. I think that is a great lesson for a lot of young players coming into the group."

"He (Virat) knows when to be aggressive and when to control the game, it's incredible to watch and a good sign for us if he can build up. Virat has an incredible template in 50-over cricket. His record speaks for itself. It's phenomenal the number of games he's played," the head coach added.

At present, the Kohli-starrer Indian team is involved in the Test series opener versus Bangladesh in Chattogram. KL Rahul-led India are in the driver's seat at stumps on Day 3, with the Bangla Tigers being 42 for no loss in pursuit of a mammoth 513.

Virat Kohli had had an eventful 2022. He started the year by leading India in the three Tests versus hosts South Africa and after the 2-1 series loss, he stepped aside from the red-ball captaincy after having resigned as the T20I skipper and being sacked as the ODI captain.

I think that is a great lesson for a lot of young players coming into the group." Ishan Kishan made the headlines by slamming a memorable 210 in India's third and inconsequential ODI versus Bangladesh on December 10. Coming in place for injured Rohit Sharma, Kishan opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan and looked impressive from the word go. Losing Dhawan early, the swashbuckling left-hander stitched a mammoth 290-run second-wicket stand with Virat Kohli (113) to help India post 409-8 before KL Rahul & Co. won by a massive 227-run margin.

Kishan, thus, became only the fourth Indian to hit a double century in the 50-over format. Overall, he became only the seventh batter to join the elusive double-hundred club. After his splendid knock, Kishan's father recently revealed the advice he gave to him. Speaking to The Indian Express, Pranav Kumar Pandey -- Kishan's father -- said, "Jab century maarta hai mai jyada kuch nahi bolta, puri duniya se shabaashi mil rahi hoti hai (When he scores runs, I don’t say much to him because he receives the congratulatory message from everyone)."

"He called me after the match, and I told him, ‘next match you will again start from zero. Don’t let this double hundred get into your head," Pandey added. The 24-year-old Ishan wasn't part of India's 2022 T20 World Cup squad despite being in the scheme of things for quite long time. Recalling the conversation he had with his dejected son, post the T20 WC squad announcement, Pandey revealed, "He was dejected, he was tense, and I have never seen him like that ever. He is a fun-loving kid, but when he was not picked, he was sad. At home, he would not sleep; he would walk on the terrace at night."

"So one day, I sat him down and told him to stop feeling sorry for himself. From now on, your job should be to make sure that they don’t get an excuse to drop you. Let your bat do the talking; you are still very young. There is a 50-over World Cup next year; prepare for that and make all the opportunities count," Pandey signed off.

Ishan has added to the selection headache with his superb knock versus the Bangla Tigers. It will be interesting to see if he now pips Dhawan and Shubman Gill, having a good run across formats, to open in the forthcoming white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka and New Zealand starting from early 2023.

Jaydev Unadkat earned a Test recall after a long time when India announced him as replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami in the run-up to the first Test between Bangladesh and India, in Chattogram. However, the 31-year-old hasn't joined the KL Rahul-led Indian squad for the series opener of the two-match Test series and is stuck at home, in Rajkot, due to visa issues.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI's logistics department is busy trying to transport him to Bangladesh but Unadkat remains in India amid the start of the Test series in Chattogram on Wednesday (December 14). It is to be noted that the BCCI organises visas for all the players who can potentially be in the selectors' radar in order to avoid any last minute logistical issue. In Unadkat's case, it seems a pre-booking was not in place as he remains a surprise addition with Shami's injury. The Saurashtra pacer made his Test debut back in december 2010 and is returning to the red-ball squad after 12 years. Hence, he may not have been in the logistic department's eyes even though he was apparently seen as an option by the outgoing selection committee.

Unadkat didn't have a great debut in whites back in 2010 during India's tour of South Africa. However, he has done the hard yards in domestic circuit. Apart from leading Saurashtra to several laurels, the left-arm pacer ended as the highest wicket-taker of the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy by accounting for 67 scalps. Overall, he has claimed as many as 353 wickets in 96 first-class matches and remains a big name in the domestic arena. With a Test comeback, he will be itching to join the squad and be a part of India's playing XI in the second and final Test in Dhaka.

In regular captain Rohit Sharma's injury, Rahul is leading the Indian team in the first Test. India have opted to bat first in the series opener and were 85 for 3 at lunch on Day 1.

Just two days before the IPL 2023 mini-auction, in Kochi, the BCCI apex council meet is set to take place on December 21 with a 12-point agenda. As per the information obtained from BCCI sources, Team India's T20 World Cup review, Rohit Sharma's captaincy future in the shortest format, and the annual central contracts 2022/23 are one of the top agendas of the meeting.

Among all the agendas, the venues for the upcoming home series are also set to be ratified. It is to be noted that the Rohit-led Indian team will commence 2023 with a white-ball series versus Sri Lanka, comprising three T20Is and ODIs each, which will be followed by equal number of T20Is and ODIs versus New Zealand beforer hosting Australia in a four-match Test series, i.e. part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and three ODIs prior to IPL 2023's commencement.

One of the top agendas will remain the review of India's T20 WC campaign, in Australia, where the pre-tournament favourites bowed out with a ten-wicket loss versus eventual winners England in the second semi-final. Moreover, there are strong rumours of Hardik Pandya set to succeed Rohit as the new T20I captain whereas split captaincy-coaching has also made the headlines in recent times. Thus, more clarity is expected on these issues. It is to be seen if the new selection committee, which will succeed the Chetan Sharma-led panel, will be announced by then or after the meeting.

There will be some discussion regarding the forthcoming Women's IPL season as well. Thus, a lot of major developments are on the way in the upcoming apex council meet.

From Rohit's T20I captaincy to central contracts: BCCI apex council meet on Dec 21 with a 12-point agenda

Team India has been a pale shadow of themselves in the Bangladesh ODIs. After losing the series opener, in defence of 187 in Dhaka, Rohit Sharma-led India went down in the second and penultimate ODI to lose by five runs and concede an unassailable 2-0 lead to the Bangla Tigers. With one game to go, to be held on Saturday (December 10) at Chattogram, 1983 World Cup-winning hero Madan Lal has slammed the team citing there is a lack of intensity and passion among players.

"Definitely the Indian team is not going in the right direction. I have not seen the intensity in the team of late. I have not seen 'Josh' in them in the last couple of years," Lal was quoted as saying by PTI. "They are not looking like an Indian team at all. That passion for playing for the country is missing. Either their bodies are too tired or they are just going through the motions. And this is a serious concern."

The former cricketer also slammed the seniors such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan for not making daddy hundreds and leading from the front. While Kohli regained form in T20Is, he hasn't done anything extraordinary in ODIs -- his most preferred format -- whereas Dhawan's strike rate has also gone down. It is to be noted that since the start of 2020; the trio have only one ton in ODI cricket combined -- coming from Rohit Sharma's blade in January 2020. Thus, Lal pointed out, "If you see the record, how many centuries they (seniors) have scored in the last three years? And how many in the last one year? With the age factor, your hand-eye coordination slows down. But they are experienced players, and they should have performed. If your top order does not perform, you are not going to win."

Madan Lal also cautioned India to change their approach and look for more specialists in white-ball format. "Every country is playing like that. Must have specialised cricketers for different formats. Why not have different players for different formats? All countries are doing it and India should also do the same," he added.

India will lock horns with Bangladesh in the third and remaining ODI on Saturday and look to avoid a whitewash at the hands of the Bangla Tigers. Passion of playing for country is missing: Madan Lal slams Team India after ODI series loss vs Bangladesh

On Wednesday (December 07), Virat Kohli opened the innings for Team India for the first time in ODI cricket since 2014 during the second and penultimate tie between India and Bangladesh in Dhaka. After opting to bat first, Liton Das-led Bangla Tigers were 69 for 6 and managed to post 271/7 riding on 100 not out from Mehedi Hasan, last match's Player-of-the-Match, and Mahmadullah's 77 as India came out for the run-chase with a new opening pair in the form of makeshift opener Kohli-Shikhar Dhawan. Captain Rohit Sharma got injured and was rushed to the hospital for scans while fielding in the slip cordon during the initial overs of the match.

Hence, Kohli opened the innings with Dhawan but couldn't do anything extra ordinary in a must-win game for Team India. Against a well-executed short-pitched delivery, the 34-year-old went for the pull, off Ebadot Hossain, and chopped it on to the stumps to depart for a 6-ball five. Here's the video of the former Indian captain's dismissal which sent Bangladeshi fans into a frenzy in the stadium:

Babar & Co. aren't out of contention yet. They are placed fifth in the table, however, wins for Australia or India in their respective upcoming Test series will end Pakistan's chances of entering the final.

On the other hand, if Rohit Sharma's India clean sweep Bangladesh, they can now afford to lose at least one of their upcoming four Tests versus Pat Cummins-led Australia at home, early next year, in a bid to qualify. For Australia, if they whitewash West Indies on home soil and beat South Africa in two out of the upcoming three Tests, Down Under, they would also make it to the summit clash.

After the loss, Babar said at the post-match presentation, "We were not upto the mark. Had a golden chance in the second innings, but session by session we lost wickets. Our bowling group is young. Unfortunately Haris injured himself in the first innings. All credit to the bowlers who bowled well and tried without Haris. We try to stick to our plans. Difficult when opponent goes at 7 an over. We had an opportunity in the second innings. But we didn't get partnerships in the end. Lot of positives. Our batting performed very well. Bowling also very well."

Pakistan will also host New Zealand after the England series. However, they have spoiled their chances of going ahead with a loss in the England series opener.

In a run-feast in Rawalpindi, England beat Pakistan by 74 runs to win the first Test and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. On Day 5, all three results were possible but Ben Stokes & Co.

In a run-feast in Rawalpindi, England beat Pakistan by 74 runs to win the first Test and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. On Day 5, all three results were possible but Ben Stokes & Co. were rewarded for their brave and attacking approach as they beat Babar Azam & Co. in the riveting final moments of the contest. Opting to bat first, England rode on centuries from Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, OIlie Pope and Harry Brooks to be dismissed for 657 (in 101 overs) in their first innings. In reply, Pakistan also made a mammoth 579, courtesy of hundreds from Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique and Babar, but gave a vital 78-run lead to the visitors who smashed 264/7 in 35.5 overs and declared; setting up a challenging 343-run target. On the final day, Pakistan were 259 for 5 are seemed like cruising towards the total before James Anderson-Ollie Robinson's four wickets each and Jack Leach chipped in with the last wicket to take their side home; dismissing Pakistan for 268. EXPLAINED: How Pakistan's 74-run loss vs England is a gain for India with WTC final ticket at stake

After the disappointment endured in the T20 World Cup, Team India has now started preparations for the 2023 ODI World Cup. After the T20 WC, regular captain Rohit Sharma missed the New Zealand tour whereas head coach Rahul Dravid was also rested. Thus, Shikhar Dhawan led in the ODIs whereas Hardik Pandya took charge of the T20I side.

Since the T20 WC debacle, many have spoken about the need for split captaincy with too much cricket being played. Moreover, there have been talks about having different coaches for different formats. England already have Brendon McCullum as their Test coach whereas Matthew Mott serves as the white-ball coach. In this regard, former Indian cricketer Hemang Badani feels such a change is surely on the cards in the Indian team.

Badani told Times Now, "I am of the opinion that both will happen in time for sure and it should happen. The skillset that a coach is required to have for different formats is not the same. The way you handle a T20 side to the way you handle and prepare for an ODI, or for Test format, is a lot different. I am all for that to happen in the future. Be it captaincy, be it coaching."

Dravid took over as the Indian team head coach after Ravi Shastri post the 2021 T20 WC in the UAE. Under Rohit and him, India have been pretty average. While they have dominated at home, beating New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia and South Africa, they failed to win a Test series in SA, beat England in a one-off Test in Edgbaston, failed to qualify for the Asia Cup final and bowed out of the T20 WC semi-finals.

With India playing cricket across formats, till the 2023 ODI WC, there might be some big decisions on the way with split captaincy and coaching taking over the current setup.

India tour of Bangladesh: Full squads, schedule, timings, telecast - All you need to know

After Team India's T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, there were strong rumours of significant changes set to take place in the T20I line-up. With the national side set to focus on the 2023 ODI World Cup and with the second cycle of ICC World Test Championship also going on, many senior players will now shift their focus on the longer formats and reportedly Hardik Pandya is set to take charge of the T20I side.

As per a report in the PTI, BCCI is likely to give the T20I captaincy to Hardik Pandya for a longer duration with the senior players, such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and the likes, set to focus on ODIs and Tests. It added that while the board won't push any senior player towards retirement from T20Is, a fresh team is likely to be given to Hardik.

"The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"You don't need to announce retirement if you don't want to. You will not see most of the seniors playing T20 next year," the source added. Thus, this can mean the end of the road for Rohit, Kohli in the shortest format.

Hardik Pandya set to be India's new T20I captain with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli not in BCCI's plans: Report

After winning the three T20Is 1-0, India will lock horns with hosts New Zealand in the first of the three-match ODI series on Friday (November 25). Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the side whereas Rishabh Pant will continue to don the deputy's hat, as he did in the T20Is with Hardik Pandya leading, as India will kick off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations. Ahead of the series, a lot has been said and written about Pant, who hasn't impressed in the T20Is after limited opportunities in the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Thus, former Indian all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi has made a big claim. The ex-cricketer feels Pant has been given a lot of opportunities in the limited-overs format but he is yet to deliver. While he did slam his maiden ODI hundred in the series win over hosts England in mid-July this year, he continues to remain unimpressive in the shortest format. In the NZ T20Is, he was given an opportunity to open the innings where he returned with 11 and 13, from five balls respectively. Hence, Sodhi feels it is time to try someone like Sanju Samson, who warmed the bench in the T20I series, as Pant has become a 'liability'.

"He (Pant) is becoming a liability for Team India. If it’s like this, then bring in Sanju Samson. End of the day, you got to take that chance because you cannot afford to lose and exit in World Cup or ICC tournaments," Sodhi was quoted as saying by India News. "When you give too many chances, problems arise. The time has come to provide opportunities to new guys." "Only time will tell how many opportunities and how long he gets. Time is passing and he really has to tighten his shoes. Everything has a limit. You cannot depend on one player for so long. If he is not performing, you got to show him the exit door," Sodhi added.

As per Sodhi, Pant remains a match-winner, but hasn't lived up to his tag and, hence, the selectors should take a call and look beyond him "We all know Rishabh Pant is a match-winner, but you don’t score runs. You don’t help your team win. You got the opportunity in an important event like the World Cup. I accept that initially he didn’t get the opportunity, but whenever you get a chance, your job is to perform, which has not happened. It’s time that selectors think beyond him." he concluded.

IND vs NZ ODIs: Rishabh Pant is becoming a liability for Team India, says former Indian all-rounder

India is gearing up for their upcoming three-match T20I series versus New Zealand, starting on November 18. In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya is set to captain India in the T20I series. While Rohit will return for the Bangladesh tour, former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels Hitman can continue to lead in Tests and ODIs whereas the national side can have a separate T20I captain given the amount of cricket being played in a calendar year.

During a select media call organised by Prime Video, Shastri opined, "For T20 cricket, there is no harm in having a new captain. Because the volume of cricket is such that for one player, to play all three formats of the game is never going to be easy. If Rohit is already leading in Tests and ODIs, there is no harm in identifying a new T20I captain and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it."

The ex-India coach also questioned head coach Rahul Dravid for his constant breaks. In a presser ahead of the T20I series between India and the Black Caps, he said, "I do not believe in breaks. Because I want to understand my team, I want to understand my players and I want to then be in control of that team. These breaks... what do you need that many breaks for to be honest? You get your 2-3 months of the IPL, that's enough for you to rest as a coach. But other times, I think a coach should be hands on, whoever he is."

In Dravid's absence, VVS Laxman is donning the head coach's hat for India's tour of NZ, featuring three T20Is and ODIs each. Here's India's squad for the NZ tour:

Squad for NZ T20Is: Hardik Pandya (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & wk), Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Deepak Hooda, Surya Kumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson (wk), W Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Mohd. Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umran Malik.
