'Frankenstein’s monster': India tears into Pakistan at UN over terror links

India has summoned Pakistan’s top diplomat in New Delhi to protest what it called the continued facilitation of illegal crossings along the international border, and to reject Pakistani claims about a fatal exchange of fire in Punjab. The Ministry of External Affairs called in the Chargé d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission on Saturday (Oct 3) and lodged a “strong protest over the continued facilitation of illegal cross-border infiltration” from Pakistan. The Indian foreign ministry “categorically rejected the baseless and motivated allegations” concerning an incident in the Ferozepur sector on 2 October. According to the Indian account, three people crossed into Indian territory near the border fence. Border Security Force personnel issued repeated warnings ordering them to return to Pakistan. The individuals did not comply and continued to move towards the fence. The BSF was then “compelled to engage them for posing an imminent security threat.” The Indian side described the episode as part of a recurring pattern of armed narcotics syndicates operating from the Pakistani side of the frontier. They said such groups have repeatedly attempted unauthorised movement across the international boundary, often under cover of darkness. The Pakistani side was told that Islamabad should investigate the infiltration and drug-smuggling activity, including “the complicity of Pakistan Border Guarding forces therein, and to take appropriate remedial measures.” New Delhi further urged Pakistan “to ensure respect for the sanctity of the International Border, strictly observe relevant bilateral arrangements, mandate its forces to exercise effective control to prevent unauthorised movement from its side, and take definitive measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.” Narcotics trafficking, particularly of heroin and synthetic drugs, has long been cited by Indian security agencies as a driver of armed infiltration attempts in Punjab and neighbouring sectors by elements on the Pakistani side.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday (Sep 26) issued a blunt warning to Pakistan over terrorism. Speaking at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Jaishankar referred to Pakistan as a “serial practitioner of terrorism” that “misrepresented facts” before the UNGA a day earlier. He also drew a red line to the country’s “state-sponsored” terror, reiterating India’s “zero tolerance” approach towards terrorism. He also stated that governments indulging in terror practices must be held accountable. Jaishankar urged UN members to “expose” and counter financial aspects of terror.“A persistent threat to peace has been the scourge of terrorism. That this could be state-sponsored, with cross-border purpose, makes it a direct affront to the global order. Governments indulging in such practices must be held accountable,” Jaishankar said. “There must be no dilution in our zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism. Its financial aspects, in particular, should be exposed and should be countered.”Referring to a heated exchange with a Pakistani journalist a day earlier, Jaishankar said, “Yesterday, a serial practitioner of terrorism misrepresented facts before this assembly.”“Arguments were invoked to normalise terrorism and claim immunity from its consequences. That will not stand,” he said.Reiterating India’s approach to terrorism, the minister said, “Our right to defend ourselves against terrorism will be exercised.
Jaishankar raises concern over attacks on commercial ships
During the 81st UN General Assembly session, Jaishankar also raised concerns over repeated attacks targeting commercial vessels and seafarers in the Gulf, Red Sea and Black Sea. Speaking at the ‘Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers’, Jaishankar said India and Liberia had joined efforts to draw international attention to the safety and security of ships and seafarers. "Just two days ago, an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier, MV Cape Dow, was attacked in the Gulf of Oman. An Indian sailor lost his life," he said. The External Affairs Minister also highlighted attacks involving civilian vessels in the Black Sea, including MV Omorfi and MV Golden Leo. “MV Omorfi was hit in Russian territorial waters on 18 July, and its chief officer, an Indian national, was killed. The following day, MV Golden Leo was struck after leaving Odessa, and four Indian seafarers lost their lives.” Jaishankar said the incidents had affected people from several countries, with seafarers of different nationalities among those killed or affected. He stressed that attacks disrupting maritime trade and resulting in civilian deaths could not be justified and urged countries to cooperate in preventing further incidents. “These actions that disrupt maritime commerce and cost innocent lives are simply indefensible. We are here to not just highlight this dangerous trend, but to urge the international community to close ranks and deter such attacks,” he said.

India has highlighted how Pakistan armed and trained the terrorists who forced Kashmiri Pandits to leave their homes in 1990 and later killed Kashmiris of every faith, in a sharp right of reply at the UN Human Rights Council. Kshitij Tyagi, Indian diplomat at India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, said Pakistan was in no position to raise Jammu and Kashmir after decades of sponsoring cross-border terrorism. “This Council does not need Pakistan to explain it. It happened in 1990, to the Kashmiri Pandits, driven from their homes by terrorists Pakistan armed, trained, and sent across the border,” he said. “Those same terrorists have since killed Kashmiris of every faith, many of them Muslim. The State that sponsored them is now asking this Council for an inquiry. The irony will not be lost on this Council.”The remarks came as Pakistan again raised Kashmir at the council’s 60th session. India restated its core position: “Jammu and Kashmir was, is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India. The only part of Jammu and Kashmir under foreign occupation is the part Pakistan holds, which we again call upon it to vacate.” The 1990 exodus remains one of the biggest crises that the Kashmir Valley faced. Pakistan-backed Hizbul Mujahideen targeted killings of prominent Hindus began in 1989. A Pakistan Navy ship involved in a collision with an Indian warship in international waters has returned to harbour after sustaining "severe damage", according to sources familiar with the incident. The incident took place on the evening of 15 September in the North Arabian Sea, where a Pakistani naval vessel approached a frontline Indian Navy warship at high speed while the Indian ship was on a routine surveillance mission. Indian side has described the Pakistani ship's manoeuvring as “unprofessional and unsafe manner,” resulting in a collision. India has summoned Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest. The Ministry of External Affairs said the Pakistani ship’s conduct was “unacceptable and unprofessional” and in “direct contravention” of a 1991 bilateral agreement. Article 10 of that pact, the Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements, states: “The Naval ships and submarines belonging to the other country are not to come closer than three Nautical Miles (NMs) from each other so as to avoid any accident while operating in international waters.” Indian sources said New Delhi’s warship suffered no major damage, no injuries and no loss of operational capability, and continued its mission. They added that the Indian Navy captain showed restraint. “Even under extreme provocation, the Indian Navy captain exercised extreme restraint by taking actions to prevent a severe accident from taking place which could have caused serious loss of life and damage,” sources said. Also Read: Trump's name cannot return to Kennedy Center, US judge rules Pakistan has not issued an official statement on the collision or the condition of its vessel. India instructed its envoy in Islamabad to deliver a matching protest. The chargé d’affaires in New Delhi was told to convey that military units on both sides must exercise due care and respect existing agreements to prevent a repeat. The incident is the first publicly acknowledged close-quarters naval encounter between the two countries since a brief but intense conflict last year. India instructed its envoy in Islamabad to deliver a matching protest. The incident is the first publicly acknowledged close-quarters naval encounter between the two countries since a brief but intense conflict last year. India has summoned Pakistan’s top diplomat in New Delhi after what it called the ‘unacceptable and unprofessional conduct’ of Pakistani naval units that led to a collision with an Indian Navy ship in international waters. The Ministry of External Affairs said the Pakistani chargé d’affaires was called in on Wednesday and a ‘strong protest’ was lodged. India’s envoy in Islamabad has been instructed to deliver a matching protest to Pakistan’s foreign ministry. “The conduct of the Pakistani naval ship was in direct contravention of Article 10 of the Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements of April 1991,” the ministry said. That 1991 pact requires the two nuclear-armed neighbours to give advance notice of military movements and to observe care at sea so that exercises and patrols do not turn into incidents. India said the collision, while occurring on the high seas, breached those rules. Also Read: Fit and impeccable? Former CDS General Anil Chauhan on Saturday (Sep 6) has said that Pakistan will remain “a major security concern and a threat for times," while also outlining other actors that may pose a threat to India. He was delivering the 22nd Bharat Ratna Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant Memorial Lecture at the Prime Ministers' Museum and Library, Teen Murti Bhawan, New Delhi. General Chauhan flagged several emerging challenges to India's national security, including shifting geopolitical alignments, rapid technological change, evolving forms of warfare, and the use of information as a weapon. Days after India condemned the destruction of a century-old Hindu temple in Pakistan, Islamabad has blamed the incident on “torrential rains,” calling India’s concerns “politically motivated” and “false propaganda”. The statement comes amid controversy surrounding the demolition of a temple located in Siraj village in the Narowal area of Punjab province. According to locals, minority rights groups and a political body, the temple was razed by a group of religious zealots who wanted to take control of its land for the expansion of an adjacent seminary.
What we know about the temple destruction
According to reports, members of a banned far-right Islamic party called Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) were behind the demolition of the temple, which is about 100-125 years old. After the incident came to light, the Pakistan Masiha Millat Party (PMMP), a minority-focused political outfit, has urged the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif-led Punjab government to take action against those involved in the alleged demolition of the religious structure and ensure its reconstruction.
Pakistan blames demolition on rain
Responding to India’s concerns over the incident, Pakistan blamed the demolition of the temple, which has stood for more than 100 years, on heavy rains and rejected the allegations made by India.“We categorically reject the false and politically motivated assertions made by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs regarding the Hindu temple at Adda Siraj, Narowal,” Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said in a statement. He added, “The temple’s structure was damaged on 21 July 2026 due to torrential rains. The local authorities have already surveyed the rain damage and initiated steps for the restoration of the building.”
What did India say?
Earlier on Wednesday (Sep 2), Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed “deep concern” following the “disturbing reports of the destruction of a historic Hindu temple in village Siraj, Narowal, Pakistan.” He unequivocally condemned the “reprehensible act of vandalism against a minority place of worship.”“The apparent apathy of authorities and failure to protect this century-old temple is alarming. Such incidents are a stark reminder of the continuing vulnerability of minority communities and the egregious violations of their religious freedoms and places of worship in Pakistan,” he added.Jaiswal further called upon the Pakistani government “to conduct a prompt and transparent investigation into this incident and ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable”. He also urged “immediate remedial measures to restore the desecrated temple and fulfil its primary obligation to guarantee the safety, security and well-being of all its minority citizens and their cultural heritage.”

Former Army Chief General Manoj Naravane has said China, rather than Pakistan, will be India's main strategic competitor in the years ahead, while stressing that Islamabad continues to pose an immediate security challenge because of terrorism.Naravane made the remarks on Thursday (Aug 20) at the launch of his book, 'The Curious and the Classified: Unearthing Military Myths and Mysteries,' published by Rupa Publications.
'China is going to be our main competitor'
Speaking about India's security challenges, Naravane said Pakistan and China remain important concerns but represent very different challenges. India-Pakistan tensions are once again in focus after authorities in New Delhi cleared unauthorized structures and encroachments outside the Pakistan High Commission.

The action comes days after Pakistani authorities removed security barricades and parking poles outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, making the latest move another apparent tit-for-tat development amid strained bilateral relations.

According to the report, the structures near the visa section of the Pakistan mission were found beyond the compound’s approved perimeter. Authorities subsequently removed the unauthorized structures and encroachments.

Visuals show rubble, metal railings, gates, roofing sheets, bricks and concrete debris outside the mission. Parts of the outer structures, including corrugated roofing and metal fencing, were pulled down, while the main entrance remained intact.

From Sri Lanka to Japan: Which countries love India the most? New survey reveals...

More than seven decades after Partition, India and Pakistan remain locked in a rivalry that has survived wars, diplomatic freezes and changing global alliances. A new Pew Research Center survey has revealed that public opinion in both countries continues to reflect that reality, with each side viewing the other through a security lens rather than a diplomatic one.
A rivalry rooted in history
In India, 54 per cent of respondents identified Pakistan as the country’s greatest external threat, while only 21 per cent named China. In Pakistan, 43 per cent people view India as their greatest threat. Meanwhile, 75 per cent described China as Pakistan’s top ally, underscoring how security concerns continue to shape the country’s strategic outlook.Military standoffs between the countries, cross-border terrorism, ceasefire violations and periodic crises have repeatedly reinforced the perception that the threat is not temporary but structural.
Why mistrust persists
Regional dynamics have changed dramatically. China has expanded its influence across South Asia, the United States has deepened strategic ties with India, and new economic and security partnerships have emerged across the Indo-Pacific. Yet India and Pakistan have not escaped the logic of mutual suspicion.Trade between the two countries remains minimal, political engagement is intermittent, and people-to-people contact has steadily declined. In the absence of sustained dialogue, security narratives have become deeply embedded in public opinion.
Two different strategic worlds
The Pew survey also highlights a widening divergence in how the two countries view the global order. India has managed to maintain productive ties with both Moscow, viewed as the most important ally by 35 per cent of Indians, and Washington, named as the top ally by 17 per cent of people, reflecting its long-standing policy of strategic autonomy. Pakistan, meanwhile, has moved much closer to Beijing, with China dominating perceptions of partnership and support, with 75 per cent calling it the country’s most important ally. For now, the rivalry is no longer defined only by borders or military deployments. It is sustained by competing threat perceptions, contrasting alliances and a deep reservoir of historical mistrust. The survey suggests that while the international system has changed, the psychological landscape of the India-Pakistan relationship has changed far less.

A new Pew survey shows India and Pakistan still see each other as major threats, with mistrust rooted in history, security concerns and increasingly different global alliances.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has called for the revival of the long-dormant South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), offering his country as a mediator to help restart leaders’ summits after nearly a decade of inactivity. Speaking at the Maldives’ Independence Day ceremony on 26 July, Muizzu said the regional body, which the Maldives helped found in the mid-1980s, had delivered “numerous benefits” but had been “rendered, or has become, dysfunctional” for about nine years. “Looking closely at our immediate region, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)... is one such body,” he said. “Given that the foreign policy of the Maldives is structured... upon the principle that differences should be addressed through consultation, by bringing concerns to the discussion table, reaching resolutions, and moving forward in a manner that benefits all, the reactivation of SAARC is equally vital for regional peace and security.”Also read | From ‘India out’ to ‘China out’? Therefore, SAARC must be operationalised once again. Everyone in South Asia is aware of which country and what activities are responsible for stymying SAARC. After all, cooperation does require goodwill,” Jaiswal told a media briefing. India has long emphasised that Pakistan’s support for cross-border terrorism and interference in neighbours’ affairs has blocked progress in the organisation.

India on Saturday (Jun 6) slammed Pakistan at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), over “unwarranted references” to Jammu and Kashmir. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, accused Islamabad of repeatedly misusing UN platfowms to push its political agenda and spreading misleading narratives on what New Delhi considers its internal matters.“The unwarranted reference by Pakistan to a matter strictly internal to India, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, has compelled me to respond,” Harish said, speaking at the UNGA plenary meeting on the Annual Report of the UN Security Council. His remarks come after Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, mentioned Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating Islamabad’s position that the dispute should be resolved in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. In a sharp reply, Harish said, “Pakistan has decided not to spare this forum either from their characteristic misuse of august UN platforms for their divisive political interests. I’d like to remind Pakistan that being a member of the UN Security Council is a huge responsibility. It’s not a forum for peddling biased and false narratives.”He also accused Pakistan of spreading “misinformed and misleading communications” at the UN Security Council. Any assertions to the contrary are baseless, devoid of and inconsistent with historical facts,” he said.“Empty rhetoric and hollow claims by Pakistan would not change this fundamental reality,” Harish added.Harish also called for reforms, urging expansion in both the permanent and non-permanent categories of Security Council membership, stressing that retaining the status quo would undermine the body’s effectiveness in the future.During his address, he also congratulated Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe on their election to the UN Security Council for the 2027-28 term.

Harish also directly referred to Pakistan’s long-criticised strategy of "bleeding India by a thousand cuts," saying the doctrine exposed Islamabad’s "hollow commitment" to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and peaceful coexistence under the UN Charter. "Through its continued sponsorship of cross-border terrorism, Pakistan has violated the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity," he added.
India rejects China, Pakistan's joint statement
The remarks came amid fresh diplomatic tensions after Pakistan and China issued a joint statement that included references to Jammu and Kashmir, triggering a strong reaction from New Delhi. India has slammed Pakistan United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for attempting to interfere in India's internal issues while not speaking about its genocidal act against neighbouring nations. In a strongly worded speech on Thursday (May 21), India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Harish Parvathaneni, slammed the country of carrying out cross-border violence in Afghanistan that caused hundreds of civilian deaths and injuries. Putting Pakistan's horrible record in front of the world, the Indian envoy listed its attack on its own people during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, referring to Operation Searchlight. He also said that the country ignored global calls to uphold international humanitarian obligations. India reiterated that states supporting cross-border terrorism must be held accountable and stressed that protection of civilians should remain central to the UN Security Council’s peace and security efforts.

What India’s UN envoy said?
“It is ironic that Pakistan, with its long-tainted record of genocidal acts, has chosen to refer to issues that are strictly internal to India," he said. Parvathaneni's response came as Pakistan attempted to rake up Jammu and Kashmir issue at the UN Security Council’s open debate. About 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, Parvathaneni said, “During Operation Searchlight in 1971, Pakistan sanctioned the systematic campaign of genocidal mass rape of 400,000 women citizens by its own army. Such inhuman conduct reflects Pakistan's repeated attempts over decades to externalize internal failures through increasingly desperate acts of violence both within and beyond its borders. As India on Thursday (May 7) held a press conference marking the valour of Indian armed forces during Operation Sindoor last year, Pakistan held a similar media briefing. The media event focused on Islamabad, insisting that India's response to one of the deadliest civilian attacks in the Kashmir Valley in recent memory, the heinous Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese citizen, was unprovoked.
