India ups engagement with Asia: South Korea, Fiji, Japan next up

India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15. It was on this day that the country freed itself from the clutches of colonialism. But, do you know why this particular date was chosen as the official Independence Day of India? Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, was entrusted with the responsibility of transferring power from the British to a new India. He chose August 15 as the date of transfer of power for several reasons. It was not random, and not based on any one particular factor. Mountbatten weighed his options and came up with August 15 as a way to not only make India free, but also keep something for himself as well. Clement Attlee, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the time, advised King George VI to appoint Mountbatten Viceroy of India on 20 February 1947. He was told that it should be done by 30 June 1948. When Mountbatten arrived in India in March, he witnessed large-scale riots in the country. He ascertained that, looking at the condition of the country, it wouldn't be feasible to wait a year to grant freedom. So, he came up with a new plan. He met with the Muslim League leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah to persuade him to support a united India. But Jinnah was adamant about creating a separate state for Muslims called Pakistan. Mountbatten accepted the fact that partition was inevitable, and now fixed a date for independence - August 15, 1947 - only five months after he landed in India. The ongoing violence in India became one of the reasons for speeding up the transfer of power. He recognised that a delay might lead to the collapse of the interim government as tensions escalated between the Congress and the Muslim League. He believed that the longer the wait, the more blood would be shed in riots across the country. In reality, Mountbatten had another extremely personal reason for choosing August 15 as the date of India's independence. Mountbatten led the Burma campaign during World War II, which ended with the unconditional surrender of the Japanese Empire in August. According to Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre's book 'Freedom at Midnight', the last viceroy of India wanted the date to coincide with "the most triumphant hours of his own existence". Mountbatten served as the Supreme Allied Commander of South East Asia Command (SEAC) to recapture Burma from the Japanese.
Mountbatten's Eureka moment
Japan had occupied Burma since 1942. Mountbatten organised and directed Allied military operations in the South East Asian theatre. He led British, Indian, and American troops in offensives launched against the Japanese in Burma to liberate it. He also played an important role in the recapture of key areas like Imphal and Kohima. Mountbatten revealed the date at a press conference, even though he himself did not know which date it would be. A journalist asked, "Sir, if all agree that there is most urgent need for speed between today and the Transfer of Power, surely you should have a date in mind?" Mountbatten said, "Yes, I have selected a date for the Transfer of Power," even though "the possible dates were still whizzing through his mind like the numbers on a spinning roulette wheel." Then, he had it. "It was a date linked in his memory to the most triumphant hours of his own" - Japan's surrender in Burma. And thus India had its date with freedom.

Why was August 15 chosen as India's date of freedom? Lord Mountbatten came up with the date, changing 1948 as the proposed year to 1947. He didn't have a date in mind. But when a reporter asked him about it, he knew in that instance what it would be.

Mountbatten had a hidden agenda behind choosing August 15 as India's Independence Day

Every year on August 15, India celebrates its Independence Day, with flag hoisting and tribute to the freedom fighters who gave up their life for the dream of an independent India. The holiday epitomises the Indian anti-colonial struggle and serves as a symbol of mass resistance. It had been 78 years since India achieved its dream of a sovereign country. However, there is confusion regarding the count of Independence Day, whether it is the 78th or 79th Indian Independence Day.
Why is there confusion?
India gained its Independence on August 15, 2025, so since August 15, India has passed 78 years till now. At first glance, the math is simple- subtract 1947 from 2025 and you get 78. So it is easy to think that this might be the 78th Independence Day of India. However, the common miscalculation is that when you subtract 1947 from 2025, you leave out August 15, 1947, which is the independence Day number one, not year zero. Each subsequent year adds one more celebration, not just time elapsed. So, while India has completed 78 full years of independence by 2025, it is actually celebrating its 79th Independence Day. So, till 2025, we have had 79 flag hoisting ceremonies, 79 national addresses, and 79 celebrations.
What to expect this year?
The 79th Independence Day is expected to be grand, with Prime Minister Modi addressing the nation from the historic Red Fort. India, as the melting pot of culture, religion and language, will host a vibrant, colourful mega festival, with cultural programs, parades, and flag-hoisting ceremonies taking place across every corner of the country.

With August 15 approaching, India is getting ready for its Independence Day Celebration, but there is confusion regarding the count of the Independence Day. Is it India's 78th or 79th Independence Day?

Some visitors to the United States may soon have to cough up a whopping $15,000 in bond money before entering the nation. According to a notice posted to the Federal Register on Monday, the US State Department has announced that it will soon launch a pilot programme for visa bonds. The 12-month trial of the visa bonds, as per reports, is set to start in 15 days' time. This bond could apply to both business and leisure visitors from certain countries. This comes amid heightened US-India tensions over President Donald Trump's tariffs. So, would Indians have to pay $15,000 to enter the US? All you need to know.
Pilot programme
Under the upcoming pilot programme, visa applicants would be required to post a bond of $5,000-$15,000 to obtain a business or tourist visa to the US - a $10,000 bond per adult and $5,000 per child."Aliens applying for visas as temporary visitors for business or pleasure and who are nationals of countries identified by the department as having high visa overstay rates, where screening and vetting information is deemed deficient, or offering citizenship by investment, if the alien obtained citizenship with no residency requirement, may be subject to the pilot program," reads the notice. What's more, once the travellers are granted the right to travel to the US, they can only do so by travelling via certain US airports, the names of which are yet to be revealed. The money posted for the bond would be refunded once the travellers go back to their home country in accordance with the terms of their visa.
Which countries will be targeted with Trump's visa bonds?
As per the notice published on the Federal Register website, the pilot programme is aimed at travellers from certain nations that are deemed to have high overstay rates. It will reportedly apply to both business and leisure visitors from countries that the US identifies as "having high visa overstay rates, where screening and vetting information is deemed deficient".
Will Indians be affected?
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Indians travel to the US for business or pleasure. According to US National Travel & Tourism Office (NTTO) data, last year, between January and October, nearly 1.9 million Indian visitors travelled to the US, marking a 48 per cent increase compared to 2019 pre-pandemic levels. The fate of these travellers amid heightened tensions, for now, is uncertain. While reports suggest that citizens of Canada, Mexico, and other countries which are part of the Visa Waiver Program are exempt from the bond requirement, it is not known if Indians would be asked to post bonds or not. The notice states that the countries subject to the Pilot Program will be announced on the travel.state.gov website. This list may also be modified on a rolling basis.

Indians to pay $15k to enter US? Trump's America will force foreigners to post hefty bond for visa

Ukraine has formally raised concerns with the Indian government and the European Union over electronic components manufactured or assembled in India being found in Iranian-designed drones used by Russian forces, suggest reports citing people familiar with the matter. Ukrainian authorities have reportedly sent at least two diplomatic notes to India's external affairs ministry since last year, after Indian-origin parts were identified in Shahed-136 unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). The issue reportedly was also flagged during EU sanctions envoy David O'Sullivan's visit to New Delhi in July, where he briefed Indian officials on the EU's latest sanctions package targeting Russian energy interests.Previously, in a post on Telegram and Facebook on 7 April, 2025, Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) said, “For the first time, a component made in India — a clock buffer from Aura Semiconductor — was found in a Russian weapon.”

What did the Indian government say on the issue?
The GOI is yet to issue a formal statement on the issue. Previously, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India's dual-use exports are governed by a "robust legal and regulatory framework". In a statement, he said that "India's exports of dual-use items are in keeping with its international obligations on non-proliferation, and based on its robust domestic legal and regulatory framework. Due diligence is conducted to ensure that such exports do not violate any of our laws".
‘Deeply disturbed’ by reports of Indian parts in Russian drones
As per a Hindustan Times report, documents show that a Ukrainian investigation found Indian-assembled or manufactured parts from Vishay Intertechnology and Aura Semiconductor inside the Shahed drones. These included a Vishay "bridge rectifier E300359" assembled in India and used in the drone's voltage regulator unit and an Aura Semiconductor "AU5426A" signal generator chip used in the drone's satellite navigation antenna. Both companies maintain they comply with all export regulations. In a statement issued in April, Aura Semiconductor, based in Bengaluru, said it was "deeply disturbed" by the possible diversion of its products to conflict zones. "We are deeply disturbed by the possibility that any of our components may have reached defence manufacturers through unauthorised third-party channels, in violation of our stated compliance framework and distribution agreements. We strongly oppose such activity and are committed to taking action wherever compliance gaps are identified," it said. You can find the full statement here.Kishore Ganti, co-founder of Aura Semiconductor Pvt Ltd said that the firm conducted a limit audit" but could not trace the end-user because it was a "plug and play" component. “The findings of the audit were inconclusive with respect to supply chain/end-user visibility of the Aura buffer product.”As per the report, after Ukraine raised the issue, security agencies have since visited electronics manufacturers in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to raise awareness about international restrictions related to dual-use items. Officials familiar with the issue said components may have reached Russia via third countries in West Asia after being legally exported from India. Ukraine’s defence intelligence agency has also flagged components from US and Chinese firms found in Russian military hardware.https://www.wionews.com/videos/ukraine-hundreds-of-russian-uavs-downed-by-drone-strikes-1754328535199/embed

Ukraine claims 'Made in India' components in Russia's Shahed drones, raises issue with New Delhi and EU: Report

Are we supposed to take the whimsical words of a political leader blurted out in crude language on a social media site at face value? The answer, if we were living in a time where leaders meant what they said and stuck to their words, would be a yes. But then we have a new normal in which the President of the United States, seen as the planet’s most powerful person, summarily describes the economies of Russia and India as “dead” and then in the same breath says the US will explore oil in Pakistan – with the outrageous -sounding prospect that it may sell oil to India someday in the future. While much of the global and media attention has been rightly on US president Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs and penalty on Indian goods ahead of an expected trade pact that potentially hurts India, for all we know, his talk of an oil hunt in Pakistan, so far dismissed as a fantasy in view of some ground realities, may be a red herring to divert attention from something potentially more serious. We know Trump as a negotiator who is willing to go back and forth from his whimsical and often strong positions on trade, inviting the tag of TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out). Global energy data estimates Pakistan’s oil reserves at between 234 to 353 million barrels, compared to India, which holds about 5 billion barrels, which is 14 times larger. In global oil rankings, Pakistan is beyond 50 compared with India’s 20-odd in proven reserves. Pakistan’s daily output of 60,000 barrels per day is only a tenth of India’s estimated 600,000 barrels per day. That doesn’t quite add up, particularly when you consider that the world is trying to reduce the consumption of carbon-based fossil fuels amid the backdrop of frenetic growth in environmentally friendly energy sources such as solar, wind, and green hydrogen. A long-stretch explanation is that US energy authorities about a decade ago estimated Pakistan to have 9.1 billion barrels in shale oil resources, compared with India’s 3.8 billion barrels. It is true that the US has its own rich supplies of shale oil, which has helped soften global crude prices, and there are analysts, including consulting firm PriceWaterhouse, who believe this could ease global oil prices by as much as 40% by 2035. That does tally with the fact that Trump has pulled out of the Paris accord on climate change, which basically marks an aggressive push to retain economic advantage based on carbon fuels. On the very first day of his second term on January 20, Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement on climate change that would have reduced fossil fuel consumption. Here’s where it does get tricky. On the one hand, US has its own shale oil supplies, and it will cost a lot of money to dig for oil in Pakistan. Is it worth it? The exact words of Trump on his Truth Social site might help: "We have just concluded a deal with the country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive oil reserves.” Was Trump’s reference to “country of Pakistan” an implicit put-down of Balochistan’s separatists in the mineral-rich province? Mir Yar Baloch, a separatist leader from Balochistan, has written to Trump after the Truth Social post, saying “oil, natural gas, copper, lithium, uranium and rare earth minerals” are indeed present in his province, but in the “Republic of Balochistan” and not Pakistan. Whatever the nuance, it seems the US now has either a geo-economic or geopolitical foothold in Pakistan or nearabouts on the Arabian Sea, ably assisted by uniformed generals in Islamabad. This is being somewhat naively discounted or overlooked in media reports that emphasize more on the fact that Pakistan is a net oil importer (accounting for 85% of its crude consumption) and its oil reserves are exaggerated. A day after Trump’s ranting post, Pakistan’s Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced an oil discovery in Sindh in a licence that signalled an output of 275 barrels of oil per day. But the number may be irrelevant and more like a red herring to divert attention from deeper truths. It seems all this is more about Balochistan separatists, a counter to neighbouring Iran and a long-shot attempt at containing China, which is lording over a critical port at Gwadar in Balochistan. Tensions have been brewing between the US and Iran for a while now especially after the October 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel, followed by the Gaza (Palestine) crisis and the conflict involving Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The US has military bases and warships across a West Asian swathe with an estimated presence of 40,000 troops in Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, and the UAE. But Balochistan is situated far away. America’s oil hunt may well be a proxy or excuse to for a foothold on or off Pakistan’s Sindh and/or the Balochistan coastline. China has a huge economic presence in Pakistan through its infrastructure-centred China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), involving investments estimated at $65 billion in 2022. Since 2017, Pakistan’s Gwadar port has been handed over to a Chinese state company on a 40-year lease. A US presence in Gwadar or its neighbourhood would thus give Washington a vital presence in the Arabian Sea. All that should help us connect some dots, including Trump’s stately White House luncheon for Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, even as India targeted him and Islamabad for backing terror attacks in Kashmir. We also need to weigh in the remark of a key US general that Pakistan is a “phenomenal partner” in Washington’s counter-terrorism efforts. In November last year, at least 32 people were killed in a suicide bombing claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army at the railway station in Quetta, Balochistan’s capital city. On March 11 this year, BLA militants hijacked the Jaffar Express carrying 440 passengers in nine coaches on its way from Quetta to Peshawar, derailed it by using explosives near a mountainous tunnel mid-journey 160 km from Quetta. US-Iran frictions and Washington’s trade war with China only make it easier for the generals in Islamabad to extend a warm handshake to Uncle Sam with whom it has a rocky but long-standing arrangement to offer logistical and intelligence support. The oil hunt may thus well be a forerunner to offer a path for the US military that has no South Asian presence after its troops departed from Taliban-controlled Kabul in 2021. At the very least, the American oil hunt gives Pakistan’s army an expense account signed by the US Congress or oil companies to increase its influence amid a crisis in the local economy. A lot would now depend on how the Trump Administration juggles its multiple ends: trade wars, oil politics and a hunt for rare earth minerals in a shift to new industrial opportunities.

Are we supposed to take the whimsical words of a political leader blurted out in crude language on a social media site at face value? The answer, if we were living in a time where leaders meant what they said and stuck to their words, would be a yes. An Indian man was assaulted, stripped by a group of men and left bleeding in Ireland's Dublin in what investigators suspect was "mindless, racist violence". Reports suggest that the 42-year-old Indian man, who is yet to be identified, was attacked by a group of men over allegations of "inappropriate behaviour around kids". The police have dismissed any inappropriate behaviour on the Indian man's part, and the authorities are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime, local media reported. The Indian ambassador to Ireland has called for the perpetrators of the attack to be brought to justice.
What happened?
According to local reports, the Indian man, who is yet to be identified, had arrived in Ireland a few weeks ago. He was targeted in the suspected hate attack at Parkhill Road in Tallaght on Saturday (Jul 19) evening. The Gardai (police) have opened an investigation into the mindless attack. "Gardaí in Tallaght were alerted to an incident at Parkhill Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24 on the evening of Saturday, July 19, at approximately 6 pm. They reportedly kicked and punched him and also slammed his head into a lamppost at least three times. It is reported that the perpetrators undressed the Indian national, removing his trousers, before he was rescued by locals. He suffered multiple wounds on his face, arms, and legs in the attack. He was rushed to the Tallaght University Hospital for his injuries and was discharged on July 20.Talking to The Journal, a local resident identified as Jennifer Murray said, "He was a gentle man and he was stripped, he was attacked. He told us what happened, that they punched him in the head first. He had about an inch and a half gash above his eyebrow, and then about an inch above his other eyebrow." SHe added that "Then they took his head and rammed it into a lamppost three times. Then they all punched him and kicked him, and they stripped his shoes, off his trousers, off his underwear off. They took his phone and they took his money, and then they left him for dead". Murray said that the attack was "pure racism, leading to innocent people being attacked."

India proved its growing military strength on July 17 and 16 with successful testing of three powerful missile systems. The country tested the Prithvi-II and Agni-1 missiles from Odisha coast on Thursday, July 17, while the advanced Akash Prime missile was tested in Ladakh on Tuesday, July 16. These tests show India's homemade weapons are working perfectly and the country is ready to defend itself.
Breaking News: Three Big Missile Tests in Two Days
On Thursday (July 17) India's Ministry of Defence successfully fired the Prithvi-II and Agni-1 missiles from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. Both missiles hit their targets perfectly. The tests were done by India's Strategic Forces Command, which handles the country's most powerful weapons. A day earlier on July 16, India achieved something special in Ladakh by using the Akash Prime missile to destroy two fast-moving drone targets flying at very high altitude. This test was extra important because it came after India's air defense systems worked so well during Operation Sindoor earlier this year. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Indian Army, DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), and defense companies for these great achievements. He especially appreciated how government companies like Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited worked together to make these tests successful.
Understanding Prithvi-II: India's Battlefield Missile
The Prithvi-II missile is one of India's most reliable short-range weapons. It runs on liquid fuel and can carry heavy warheads to destroy enemy targets. Originally made for the Indian Air Force, now both the Air Force and Army use it.
What Makes Prithvi-II Special:

Can hit targets 350 kilometers away

Carries warheads weighing 500-1000 kg 8.5 meters long missile

Weighs about 4.5 tonnes

Uses smart computer guidance to hit targets accurately

Launched from mobile trucks that can move anywhere

The Prithvi-II is very accurate and can change its path while flying to avoid enemy defenses. It was first tested in 1996 and became part of India's main weapon force in 2003.

How Prithvi-II is Launched: The missile sits on a special truck called a mobile launcher. When needed, the truck drives to a safe location, raises the missile upright, and fires it toward the target. The truck can quickly move to a new hiding place after firing. This makes it very hard for enemies to find and destroy the launcher. All Types of Prithvi Missiles India Has Made: Prithvi-I (Army Version): Can hit targets 150 km away and carries 1000 kg warheads. The Army used these missiles from 1994 but now newer Prahaar missiles are replacing them. How it's launched: From mobile truck launchers that can drive on roads and hide in forests or behind hills. Prithvi-II (Air Force Version): This is the one tested on July 17. It can hit targets 350 km away and carries 500-1000 kg warheads. Both Air Force and Army use it now. How it's launched: From special trucks with hydraulic systems that raise the missile upright. On Thursday, July 17, India's Ministry of Defence successfully fired the Prithvi-II and Agni-1 missiles from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. A day earlier on July 16, India used the Akash Prime missile to destroy two fast-moving drone targets flying at high altitude.

Breaking News: Three Big Missile Tests in Two Days On Thursday (July 17) India's Ministry of Defence successfully fired the Prithvi-II and Agni-1 missiles from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. Understanding Prithvi-II: India's Battlefield Missile The Prithvi-II missile is one of India's most reliable short-range weapons. It runs on liquid fuel and can carry heavy warheads to destroy enemy targets. Originally made for the Indian Air Force, now both the Air Force and Army use it. What Makes Prithvi-II Special: Can hit targets 350 kilometers away Carries warheads weighing 500-1000 kg 8.5 meters long missile Weighs about 4.5 tonnes Uses smart computer guidance to hit targets accurately Launched from mobile trucks that can move anywhere The Prithvi-II is very accurate and can change its path while flying to avoid enemy defenses. The truck needs to fuel the missile with liquid propellant before firing, then can quickly drive away. Prithvi-III (Navy Version): Can hit targets 350 km away and carries 1000 kg warheads. It was designed for ships but is now mostly replaced by the improved Dhanush version. **How it's launched:** From reinforced helicopter decks of naval patrol vessels using special launch platforms. Dhanush (Advanced Ship-Launched Version):This is the newest and most advanced naval version of the Prithvi family, also called Prithvi-III. It can attack targets 350 km away, but with smaller warheads it can reach up to 750 km. The name "Dhanush" means bow (like bow and arrow) in Hindi. On Monday (July 14), the health ministry has alerted that some sweets and savouries synonymous with snacks in India will now carry a warning. Not just any warning, something that will make you double-guess your choice and probably guilt you a little before enjoying it. Now that has divided people, and a diverse range of opinions has come to the fore. A warning similar to that on cigarette packs. Both the food items may carry tags to caution you, it may read something like this: ‘oil and sugar boards’. Are you prepared? Well, not everybody is as samosa and jalebi are not ordinary snacks. Many in India are emotional about their food and just as this news broke, the internet couldn’t keep calm. Some call it a good move to regulate obesity or at least make people second-guess their food choices, while others are absolutely against India contesting that processed food does more damage.
Here's how netizens have reacted:
X user Navrang writes, “Absolutely right! If Jalebi & Samosa get flagged, why not Pizza, Burgers, Donuts too? Our traditional snacks have been enjoyed for centuries — occasional indulgence isn’t the problem, modern junk overload is! Health warnings should be equal, not selective!”

Another user argues, ‘these can be made at home’ and cannot have such warnings.

Pizza burgers are temporary, Samosa Jalebi are permanent. ‘Samosa or jalebi isn’t unhealthy', says another X user.

The health ministry has alerted all central institutions to carry warning signs, AIIMS Nagpur has already been instructed, according to a report by the news outlet Times Of India (TOI).

Here's how netizens have reacted: X user Navrang writes, “Absolutely right! If Jalebi & Samosa get flagged, why not Pizza, Burgers, Donuts too? Our traditional snacks have been enjoyed for centuries — occasional indulgence isn’t the problem, modern junk overload is! Health warnings should be equal, not selective!”

Indian Railways on Sunday (Jul 13) announced that CCTV cameras would soon be installed in all passenger coaches. As per a statement by the Ministry of Railways, the CCTV cameras would be put up in around 74,000 coaches in 15,000 locomotives. The move has even received a go-ahead from the Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu. But why are cameras being installed in Indian trains? Won't they compromise on passenger privacy? Or would they help passengers? Here's all we know about Indian Railways' upcoming CCTV camera setup drive.
Why are CCTV cameras being installed in Indian trains?
As per reports, the CCTV cameras are being installed after the positive outcome of the installation of CCTV cameras in passenger coaches. In its press release, the Ministry of Railways said that the move will "significantly improve passenger safety". It added that "miscreants and organised gangs take advantage of gullible passengers" and that with cameras "such incidents will significantly reduce."
What about passenger privacy?
Keeping in mind passenger privacy, the Ministry of Railways said that the CCTV camera would be installed in the "common movement area near the doors." As per reports, every train coach will be covered by four cameras — two each in the entrance way. Meanwhile, each locomotive will have six cameras – one each at the front, rear and on both sides of the locomotive. Additionally, each cab (front and rear) of a loco will be fitted with 1 dome CCTV camera and two desk-mounted microphones.
Best-in-class equipment, AI to be used
Reports suggest that the CCTV cameras will have the latest specifications and will also be STQC certified. At a review meeting attended by the senior officials of the Railway Board on Saturday, Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu said he only wanted the best-in-class equipment. He urged officials to ensure that, if needed, high-quality footage could be accessed even for trains running at 100 km/h-plus speeds and also under low lighting conditions. He also encouraged railway officials to explore the use of AI in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission.

Addressing an event on Tuesday (July 8), former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he deserves a Nobel Prize for working in the national capital despite the hurdles put forth by the Lieutenant Governor. He was the crowd during a book launch event in Mohali in presence of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and other AAP leaders. Kejriwal's statement refers to the continuous tussle of the previous AAP government in Delhi with the L-G and the Centre. Globally, his statement comes against the backdrop of United States President Donald Trump's numerous nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. "The moment we left the government, Delhi is recalling the AAP government. They have shut the Mohalla clinics. They have stopped providing free medicines and free tests in hospitals. All the roads are broken. There is so much trash everywhere. Last year, in June, when it was 50 degrees Celsius, there was not even one minute of power cut, but now there is a power cut that has lasted six years. They have destroyed Delhi. They are doing politics, and they just want to earn money.
Donald Trump and Nobel Peace Prize
Earlier on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated US President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in "forging peace." He is not the first one to nominate Trump for the prize. From 2018 to the present, Trump has been nominated for the prize seven times by several individuals/countries, and yet has not received one. This year itself Trump has received three nominations. Last month, Republican leader Buddy Carter nominated the POTUS for the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering the ceasefire between Israel and Iran. He credited Trump for ‘preventing the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism from obtaining the most lethal weapon on the planet.’ Prior to that, Pakistan nominated him, stating that the US president deserved a Nobel Peace Prize because of “his decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis”.

Sub Lieutenant Aastha Poonia is set to be Indian Navy first woman fighter jet pilot. The officer received the prestigious 'Wings of Gold' and became the first woman to be streamed into the Fighter stream of Naval aviation. India has operated aircraft carriers for several decades, but all Naval fighter jet pilots have been male officers. Henceforth, on completing her one-year training, Aastha Poonia will create history as India's first Naval woman fighter pilot. At present, women officers pilot helicopters, maritime reconnaissance aircraft of the Navy, and they serve as Naval air Operations Officers(system operators), among other roles. On 3rd July, the Indian Navy celebrated the graduation of the Second 'Basic Hawk Conversion Course' at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. INS Dega is a naval air station of the Indian Navy, under the Eastern Naval Command. On the graduation of the course, Rear Admiral Janak Bevli, ACNS, Air, presented the coveted 'Wings of Gold' to Sub Lieutenants Atul Kumar Dhull and Aastha Poonia. The ‘golden wings’ symbolizes a naval pilot's ultimate transition from training to operational readiness. At present, India operates the Russian-origin aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, both of which operate the Russian-origin Mig-29K fighter jet. The K-variant of the Mig-29 features more powerful engines than other variants, it has foldable wings for easy storage on the carrier deck or hangar, the aircraft has a reinforced undercarriage for handling the stresses of landing on decks of aircraft carriers. The K-variant also has a tail hook, a mechanical device that latches onto arrestor wires on the carrier deck, enabling the jet to come to a quick halt on the short, floating runway. Carrier aviation is a highly challenging domain, given that pilots have to takeoff and land their jets from an airfield that is moving, rolling (tilting sideways), and pitching(tilting up and down). While typical land-based runways are longer than 3,000meters, carrier-deck runways are barely 150-200meters in length, which makes the operation of fighter aircraft highly challenging. Even under such circumstances, naval fighter aviators and helicopter pilots operate from carrier decks in day and night conditions, under all-weather scenarios. To augment its naval fighter aviation capabilities, the Indian Navy is procuring 26 French-origin Rafale-Marine fighter jets from Dassault aviation. The Indian Air Force has been operating 36 Rafales, and the future induction of Navy's Rafales would make India's Rafale fleet a total of 52 jets.

Another death in gym: Faridabad man suffers heart attack while working out

A new land scam has come to the fore in India's Punjab. Punjab's Ferozepur police booked a duo for illegally selling a historic Indian Air Force (IAF) airstrip - used in 1962, 1965 and 1971 wars. The police allege that a mother-son duo sold the airstrip in connivance with revenue officials. Though the land was sold in 1997 by Usha Ansal and her son Naveen Chand, natives of Dumni Wala village, an FIR on the matter has been filed 28 years later. The matter first came to light after a complaint was filed by a retired revenue officer, Nishan Singh, with the vigilance bureau. However, no action was taken against it for years, even though a preliminary inquiry was conducted. FIR was finally filed recently after court intervention. This airstrip, situated in Patti Fattuwala village near the Pakistan border, was acquired by the British administration on March 12, 1945 and was used as an Advance Landing Ground (ALG) by the IAF. According to a Times of India report, an investigation by the Vigilance Department, prompted by a reprimand from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, led to an FIR being registered against the duo on June 20, 2025, 28 years after the fraud. As per multiple reports, senior police officer D Manjit Singh said the FIR has been registered at Kulgarhi police station under IPC sections 419 (impersonation), 420 (cheating), 465, 467 (forgery), 471 (use of forged documents), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).
How was the defence land sold?
The mother-son duo presented themselves as landowners while the true owner, Madan Mohan Lal, had died in 1991, but the land was sold under his name in 1997. Reports said that several individuals were named as owners between 2009-2010 despite the Ministry of Defence not transferring the land. On April 16, 2021, the commandant of the Halwara Air Force Station lodged a complaint by a retired revenue officer, Nishan Singh. As per India Today, it took the local administration five years to conduct a comprehensive inquiry. Nishan Singh moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court December 21, 2023. Justice Harjit Singh Brar criticised the Deputy Commissioner of Ferozepur’s inaction, labelling it a serious threat to national security, and directed the chief of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau to personally investigate and report within four weeks. According to the Times of India report, the land was finally restored to the Ministry of Defence in May 2025, following intervention by the High Court.
