Another appeared to show BJP MP Nishikant Dubey declaring that protesters would be denied government and private-sector jobs, with their families exposed to legal action. Both were fake — AI-manipulated fabrications, confirmed as such by independent fact-checkers and by the Press Information Bureau, which debunked AI-generated videos of Prime Minister Modi and Goyal and attributed the campaign to Pakistani propaganda operations.&nbsp;Goyal filed a police complaint, stating his remarks outside Parliament had been maliciously altered using artificial intelligence. An FIR was registered at Delhi's Chanakyapuri police station. Delhi Police said they identified and blocked more than 400 Pakistan-linked social media handles involved in what they described as a coordinated misinformation campaign built on AI-generated content and deepfakes.&nbsp;These videos did not spread by accident. Meta's AI, which the company insists is sophisticated enough to moderate content at scale, could not distinguish a deepfake of India's Commerce Minister from a real one.&nbsp;The Businesses It Destroyed&nbsp;While Meta's systems failed to catch fabrications of national leaders, they were ruthlessly efficient at removing people who had done nothing wrong.&nbsp;Meta says it removed more than 10 million accounts in a crackdown targeting bots and fake engagement. A New York Times investigation this month documented what that meant in practice: business owners whose livelihoods disappeared overnight, accounts disabled under vague headings such as ‘fraud and deception’ with no specific violating post ever identified, and appeals rejected within days in terms making clear no further review was possible.&nbsp;The design is the problem. In March 2026, Meta handed greater responsibility to AI systems both for judging violations and for deciding appeals against those judgements — then laid off thousands of the staff who had done that work. A test account was reportedly served around 30 distinct paid ads using explicit search terms, redirecting users to Telegram channels selling illegal material for as little as ₹99.&nbsp;The mechanism matters. Meta's advertisement review is conducted primarily by AI, examining an ad's images, text, targeting and destination links. When the system is confident an ad complies, it runs — with no human reviewing it at any point. A human sees an advertisement only if the machine itself is uncertain.&nbsp;The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology summoned Meta's officials. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directed the ministry to seek an explanation. MeitY ordered Instagram to disable all such content and demanded a detailed response within seven days, warning that failure could threaten Meta's safe harbour protection under Section 79 of the IT Act. Meta's response was that it does not ‘knowingly’ target such advertising, and that ‘no system is perfect.’ Forbes reported on July 13 that such advertisements remained active on Instagram after the controversy had already broken.&nbsp;And Then It Blocked The Prime Minister&nbsp;On Facebook, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's post announcing action on the NEET paper leak — ‘More strict actions against paper leaks to come in tomorrow’s Cabinet!' — is unavailable to users in India. Meta's entire explanation is one sentence: ‘The attached media isn’t available in your region due to a legal request.'&nbsp;No authority is named. No statute is cited. No case number appears. The same message on Instagram set a world record, crossing 303 million views in 24 hours and overtaking the previous mark held by YouTuber IShowSpeed. On one Meta platform it is the most-viewed reel in history. On the other, Indians cannot see it.&nbsp;Priti Gandhi, the BJP's IT and social media national in-charge for the party's seven Morchas and an official spokesperson for Maharashtra BJP, put the question directly to the company: ‘The Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy uploads his first direct selfie video to connect with India's youth… and Facebook restricts it??? Who gave Meta the authority to decide what millions of Indians should or should not see??? This isn't just content moderation. It raises serious questions about your political bias, transparency &amp; accountability. Respond!!!'&nbsp;Meta has not responded.&nbsp;The Opacity Is Itself The Offence&nbsp;Meta will say, correctly, that it often acts on legal requests from Indian authorities. Protest-related content was geo-blocked in India in July under Section 69A of the IT Act, and Delhi Police wrote to platforms seeking removal of hundreds of posts linked to the agitation, alleging they carried AI-generated abusive content and misinformation.&nbsp;But that defence collapses into the accusation. If Meta is merely executing lawful orders, it can say so — name the provision, cite the order, tell Indian citizens which authority decided what they may see. It does not. It publishes four words and leaves 800 million Indian users to guess. The company has built a system in which neither the government's decisions nor Meta's own are visible to the people affected by them, and that ambiguity serves Meta alone.&nbsp;The Case For Action&nbsp;Assemble the record. An AI moderation system that cannot identify a deepfake of the Commerce Minister but can permanently erase a legitimate small business on a false positive. An advertising system that approves child sexual abuse material without a human ever seeing it. A recommendation engine that pushed fabricated videos of the Prime Minister into Indian feeds during a national crisis. An appeals process where the machine that convicts also hears the appeal. And a company that answers to a formal government summons with the observation that no system is perfect.&nbsp;Section 79 of the IT Act grants platforms immunity from liability for user content — but only while they discharge their due diligence obligations. That is a conditional privilege, not a right, and India's government has already put Meta on formal notice that the condition is in question.&nbsp;No one elected Meta. No one in India granted it the authority to decide which of the Prime Minister's words its citizens may read, or to end a business built over a decade with an automated notice and no appeal. India has every sovereign right to ask whether a company that has failed this comprehensively should retain the legal protections that let it operate here — and, if the answer is no, to act on it.

The upcoming Likaru-Mig La-Fukche road close to Hanle in Eastern Ladakh will be 64-kilometre long and at its highest point, it will be at an altitude of 19,400 feet making it the highest motorable road in the world after its completion.&nbsp;

The current record holder is of the highest motorable road in the world Umling La road in Ladakh at a height of 19,024 feet, also made by the BRO. The 52-km road that connects Chishumle to Demchok, which is right on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the contested border between India and China.&nbsp;

However, the upcoming road that will connect Likaru with Fukche is three kilometres from the LAC in Eastern Ladakh. According to media reports, an all-woman unit of BRO engineers began construction on Tuesday, August 15.&nbsp;

“On the occasion of 77th Independence Day @BROindia starts construction on yet another strategic road, Road Likaru-Mig La-Fukche. This road will pass through an altitude of 19,400 feet and will be the world’s highest motorable road surpassing the Umling La Pass,” said BRO in a post&nbsp;on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The construction of the Likaru-Mig La-Fukch also began at a time when India and China have been locked in a military standoff along the LAC, in the Ladakh sector for more than three years now. This is after multiple rounds of talks including the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/indian-and-chinese-army-hold-talks-to-resolve-eastern-ladakh-stand-off-626849">reported Major-General level</a> talks were held on Friday, August 18.&nbsp;

The talks were held to resolve the issues at Depsang Plains and CNN Junction near Demchok &nbsp;– the remaining friction points between the two sides. It also comes days after the 19th round of the China-India Corps Commander Level Meeting took place at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point in the Leh district of Ladakh, a Union Territory of India.&nbsp;

In an interview with news agency ANI, Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry, Director General, BRO,&nbsp;said that the upcoming road will also “help in the deployment of troops at the earliest if any critical situation arises.” 
 
“On 15th August BRO started a road connecting Likru, Mig-La and Phukche at a height of 19400 ft,”&nbsp;said the BRO official.&nbsp;

He also spoke about how the Indian Prime Minister will also soon inaugurate the Sela tunnel which will be the “highest and longest bi-lane tunnel in the world”.&nbsp;

“We’ll also be starting with the Shinku La tunnel which will be the highest and will break the record of the Mi La tunnel situated in China. Nyoma Airfield when completed will be one of the highest airfields in the world,” the BRO official told ANI.&nbsp;

India’s BRO begins work on ‘world’s highest motorable road’ at 19,400 feet near LAC in east Ladakh

Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna has said that China needs to respect India’s borders and that he will work towards New Delhi getting critical US technologies like some other key allies including Israel, Japan and South Korea. 
 
Ro Khanna, co-chair of the Congressional India Caucus who is leading a bipartisan Congressional delegation here, hoped that India can play a role in effecting peace between Russia and Ukraine. 
 
“It`s very important that we keep India`s sovereignty.…They (China) need to respect India`s border and this is why I went to the Western Naval Command. We are working very closely with the American Navy to make sure the Arabian Sea remains free for navigation and that the Indian Ocean remains free, and we will continue to strengthen that relationship,” Khanna told ANI in an interview.

“I believe that both America and India are important democracies that they have to move towards becoming even better democracies. And that means recognizing pluralism, recognizing minority rights, making sure that every person is treated with equality,” Khanna said. 
 
“These are conversations as good friends as allies that we need to continue to have with respect. I will say I have had these conversations in India and they`ve been welcomed….and the government has been welcoming me having these conversations”, he added. 
 
Strongly condemning the attack on the India consulate in San Francisco by Khalistani separatists, Khanna said that there can be no violence against an embassy.

“We need to have Ukraine`s sovereignty restored, but there also needs to be peace. There needs to be a ceasefire, otherwise, this is affecting wheat prices. It`s affecting oil prices, not to mention the loss of human life...so hopefully India can play a role in getting peace,” the Congressman said.

China needs to respect India’s borders, says US Congressman Ro Khanna

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently held a rare video conversation with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops stationed on the Indian border near Eastern Ladakh and inspected their combat readiness.&nbsp;According to local state media, the event took place on January 18. The Chinese leader was at the PLA headquarters when he addressed the troops on the border defence situation in Khunjerab under the Xinjiang Military Command.

The Xinjiang military command troops are involved in managing border areas along Eastern Ladakh, which has seen tensions since April 2020 after the PLA carried out multiple transgressions.

In his address, Xi, who is also general secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China and the commander-in-chief of the PLA, spoke about how “in recent years, the area has been constantly changing” and how it had impacted the Chinese army, according to the video shown in the official media.

One of the soldiers replied that they were now carrying out “dynamic” and “24-hour” monitoring of the border. Xi then asked about their conditions and whether they were able to “receive fresh vegetables” in the inhospitable terrain.

According to the state media, Xi asked the border troops “about their border patrol and management work” and “hailed the soldiers as models of border defence and encouraged them to persist in their efforts and make new contributions.”

Eastern Ladakh has been one of the flashpoints of recent India-China tensions that erupted following the violent clash in the Pangong lake area.

So far, 17 rounds of high-level military talks have been held between the two countries and yet no significant breakthrough has been achieved in resolving the border issue.

India has repeatedly taken a tough stand, asserting that border instability and trade can’t go hand-in-hand, and has taken various measures to limit India’s reliability on Chinese goods.

After Arunachal Pradesh's MP Tapir Gao informed that a 17-year-old was allegedly abducted by the Chinese army as&nbsp;reports said Indian army officials&nbsp;contacted PLA troops along the Line of Actual of Control(LAC).

MLA from Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh Ninong Ering called the incident "shocking" as he requested the Indian foreign ministry to intervene.

"Chinese intrusion in our land must be checked," Ering said.

The development comes as Indian and Chinese commanders concluded the 14th round of talks recently. The talks were held at Chushul-Moldo meeting point in eastern Ladakh as India pressed for the disengagement process at Hot Springs.

India and China have been involved in a standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh since May 2020. In June 2020, Indian and Chinese troops were involved in a clash at Galwan Valley in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed&nbsp;including four&nbsp;Chinese PLA soldiers.

Although China had announced disengagement at the border in February last year but reports say PLA have&nbsp;built new fortifications and roads along the LAC and stationed troops. India had earlier slammed China's move to build a bridge across Pangong Lake.

After reports said hundred soldiers from China had entered India's territory in Uttarakhand&nbsp;last month, latest reports indicate that Chinese troops have been installing missile defence systems and building military infrastructure&nbsp;along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

During the meeting, the Indian side clearly told the Chinese side that "unilateral change of status quo is not acceptable" and called for "resolving the remaining issues along the LAC in eastern Ladakh at the earliest" according to the readout by the ministry of external affairs.

The meet took place after a gap of more than ten&nbsp;months. Both ministers had last met in person on the sidelines of the SCO FMs meet in Moscow in September of 2020 in the aftermath of the Galwan incident in which India lost 20 soldiers due to Chinese aggressive actions.

Recalling the February pact between the two&nbsp;countries that led to disengagement at Pangong lake, EAM called for "resolving the remaining issues along the LAC in eastern Ladakh at the earliest". While disengagement at Pangong Lake is over, the situation in areas like Hots Springs and Gogra remains the same.

According to the Indian readout, EAM pointed out to the Chinese State Councillor that the "successful disengagement" in the Pangong Lake area earlier this year had "created conditions for resolving the remaining issue" and "it was expected that the Chinese side would work with us towards this objective."

He highlighted that the "situation in remaining areas is still unresolved" and "prolongation of the existing situation was not in the interest of either side" which was "visibly impacting the relationship in a negative manner."

After the Galwan incident, India had increased scrutiny on Chinese investment and banned a number of Chinese apps. The sentiment in the country has also turned against Beijing to&nbsp;an all-time high&nbsp;last seen in the 1962 India-China war.

During the talks on Wednesday, the focus was also on holding the next round of military talks. Both sides already have had a diplomatic round of talks, known as Working Mechanism for Consultation &amp; Coordination(WMCC)&nbsp;in June.

According to the Indian readout, EAM pointed out to the Chinese State Councillor that the "successful disengagement" in the Pangong Lake area earlier this year had "created conditions for resolving the remaining issue" and "it was expected that the Chinese side would work with us towards this objective." He highlighted that the "situation in remaining areas is still unresolved" and "prolongation of the existing situation was not in the interest of either side" which was "visibly impacting the relationship in a negative manner." 6) A similar action would be taken in the South Bank area by both sides. No details are known yet on how this will happen, in terms of movements of troops.

8) Both sides have agreed on a "temporary moratorium on military activities" by both sides in the North Bank of the lake. This includes a moratorium on patrolling to the traditional areas. 9) Once "complete disengagement" has happened at Pangong Lake, Senior Commanders of both sides will meet within 48 hours. So far nine rounds of &nbsp;Senior Commanders meet or military talks have taken place, the last one being in January of this year.

10) &nbsp;New Delhi's message to China, by the Defence Minister from Parliament is, "By now, the Chinese side is also fully aware of our resolve. It is therefore our expectation that the Chinese side will work with us in full sincerity to resolve these remaining issues." He highlighted, " I want to assure this House that in these talks we have not conceded anything."

What next?

Some issue still remains. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, "there are still some outstanding issues with regard to deployment and patrolling" at some points along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh. They will be discussed during future India-China talks at the military and diplomatic level.

India is also looking to European markets to get more winter clothing for immediate requirements as its soldiers are braving temperatures of minus 25 degrees Celsius as they occupy 13 critical heights in south of Pangong Lake in Ladakh. 
 
The seventh round of India-China military talks on October 12 at Chushul to resolve the border dispute in eastern Ladakh ended in deadlock, after around 11 hours of deliberations. The de-escalation of forces at the LAC during the winter is highly unlikely now and India has to set up a huge logistical arrangement. 
 
On August 30, India occupied critical mountain heights like Rechin La, Rezang La, Mukpari, and Tabletop, that were unmanned till now, on the southern bank of the Pangong Lake. It also made some deployments near Blacktop also. 
 
The deployment came after the Chinese tried to make a provocative military move. Now, dominance at these 13 peaks allows India to dominate Spangur Gap under Chinese control and also the Moldo garrison on the Chinese side.

The city of Balasore in India's Odisha was buzzing today as a supersonic cruise missile roared through the skies. It is capable of travelling nearly three times faster than the speed of sound.

The missile can now travel up to 400 kilometres. It has the potential to hit targets deep inside enemy lines. As the border stand-off continues, India is now positioning these missiles close to counter the Chinese build-up. The BrahMos, along with the Nirbhay and Akash are guarding India on the front. The Nirbhay has a range of 800 kilometres. While the Akash which is a surface-to-air missile can hit targets that are 40 kilometres away.

These missiles have very specific roles to play in case China decides to escalate the situation. Reports say the BrahMos can be used to target Chinese airstrips in Tibet and Xinjiang. It can also be used to take out a warship in the Indian Ocean.

The Nirbhay is a long range, all-weather missile, and can be launched from multiple platforms, and it can carry conventional and nuclear warheads. The Akash can be used to counter any People’s Liberation Army aircraft intrusion across the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh.

BrahMos: Another deterrent against the ever-aggressive neighbour China

The high-power China Study Group (CSG) met on Friday and carried out a comprehensive review of the overall situation in eastern Ladakh including India's operational preparedness in view of the continued belligerence by the Chinese army and its fresh attempts to "intimidate" Indian troops in the region.

At a nearly 90-minute meeting of the group, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Bipin Rawat and the three service chiefs also looked at further enhancing the vigil along the nearly 3,500-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC), including in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim sectors, sources told PTI.

The sources said the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is yet to respond to the Indian Army's communication to it on holding the next round of the Corps commander-level talks.

"There is no date as of now as the Chinese military is yet to respond to it. The talks could take place sometime next week," a source said.

The two sides have so far held five rounds of talks at the level of Corps commanders.

Army Chief Gen. MM Naravane briefed the meeting about the fresh face-offs between Indian and Chinese troops at both the north and south bank of the Pangong lake and elaborated on steps taken to effectively deal with such attempts, the sources said.

The meeting also deliberated on arrangements being made to maintain the current level of troops and weapons in all forward areas in eastern Ladakh and other sensitive high-altitude sectors in the harsh winter months when the temperature drops up to minus 25 degree Celsius.

The sources said the meeting also briefly touched upon the main talking points to be raised by the Indian side at the next Corps commander-level talks which is expected to focus on the implementation of an agreement reached between foreign ministers of India and China at a meeting in Moscow on September 10.

"We will insist on early and complete disengagement of Chinese troops from all friction points. That is the first step for restoration of peace and tranquillity along the border," said a source.

The sources said the situation remained tense at both the north and south bank of the Pangong lake area as well as at other friction points in eastern Ladakh.

There have been at least three attempts by the PLA to "intimidate" Indian troops along the north and south bank of Pangong lake area in the last three weeks where even shots were fired in the air for the first time at the LAC in 45 years.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava on Thursday said China should take forward the process for complete disengagement of troops from all friction points including at the Pangong lake area, and asked it not to make unilateral attempts to change the status quo.

He said both sides should focus on easing tensions in the friction areas by refraining from any actions that may lead to an escalation in the situation.

The assertion by Srivastava came in the backdrop of remarks by Chinese foreign ministry on Wednesday that it was for India to initiate the process to disengage and restore peace along the LAC.

Both sides reached a five-point agreement to resolve the border standoff at a meeting between External Affairs minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on September 10 on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation(SCO) meet in Moscow.

The agreement included measures like quick disengagement of troops, avoiding action that could escalate tensions, adherence to all agreements and protocols on border management and steps to restore peace along the LAC.

The situation in eastern Ladakh deteriorated after China unsuccessfully attempted to occupy Indian territory in the southern bank of Pangong lake on the intervening night of August 29 and 30.

India occupied a number of strategic heights on the southern bank of Pangong lake and strengthened its presence in Finger 2 and Finger 3 areas in the region to thwart any Chinese actions. China has been occupying the areas between Finger 4 and Finger 8. The mountain spurs in the area is called Fingers.

China has strongly objected to India's move. However, India has maintained that the heights are on its side of the LAC.

India has also rushed in additional troops and weapons to the sensitive region following China's transgression attempts.
