Pakistan: Imran Khan's live speeches banned, media body bans live broadcast

Imran Khan, former prime minister of Pakistan and leader of PTI, claimed that a British newspaper had taken his statements out of context regarding Salman Rushdie’s attack. Khan described the attack as ‘sad’ and ‘terrible.’

The former minister, in conversation with UK-based The Guardian, said, "Rushdie understood because he came from a Muslim family. He knows the love, respect, and reverence of a prophet that lives in our hearts. He knew that. So, the anger I understand, but you can't justify what happened."

However, PTI explained that Khan’s comments had been misinterpreted as his remarks. The party tweeted, "The Guardian took my speech out of context. I refused to attend the seminar on inviting the cursed Salman Rushdie to India. In the interview, I explained the Islamic method of punishing the insolent Prophet. He referred to the Sialkot tragedy, and spoke of Rushdie in the same context," ANI reported.

Imran Khan stated he declined Rushdie’s invitation to the seminar. Imran said, "I gave the example of the Sialkot incident [...] spoke about Rushdie in the same context," Dawn reported.

Former PM Imran Khan claims his remarks on Salman Rushdie attack were taken ‘out of context’

The interior minister for Pakistan, Rana Sanaullah, stated on Sunday that the government was discussing whether to bring a new case against Imran Khan, the PTI chairman, for his "provocative speech" from the previous day or to add him to an existing case.

The minister criticised Imran at a press conference in Islamabad for allegedly threatening authorities and impeding officers from carrying out their official responsibilities.

In response to Imran Khan's verbal threats against the IG, DIG, and Magistrate of Islamabad, the minister said that he should prepare to face the law.

Imran Khan had issued a warning that cases would be brought against the magistrate, deputy IG, and inspector general of police in Islamabad.

Rana Sanaullah claimed he had threatened members of the government. He must now prepare to face the law.

Khan was ousted from office in April following a vote of no confidence in Parliament. Since then, he has accused the US of being behind a foreign conspiracy.

He regularly holds rallies across the nation to demand new elections, but as a result of his on-going campaign against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he and his supporters have come into increasing conflict with the police.

Imran Khan took office in 2018, promising to end Pakistan's tradition of family rule. However, his detractors claimed that the ruthless military, which has ruled the nation for half of its 75-year history, helped Khan win the election.

Following interior minister Sanaullah's comments, there is growing talk that Khan may be detained at any moment.

Pakistan govt warns Imran Khan, mulls filing case against him over 'threat speech'

Pakistan's media watchdog has banned live television broadcast of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's speeches. The ban was issued on Saturday night (August 20) and came into effect immediately. Khan had held a rally in Pakistani capital Islamabad on the same day. He criticised police officials and judiciary during the rally over the arrest of one of his party leaders.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued notice to television channels saying Khan was leveling "baseless allegations and spreading hate speech".

"His provocative statements against state institutions and officers... is likely to disturb public peace and tranquility," it added.

Imran Khan is set to hold a rally in Rawalpindi on Sunday night.

Khan swept into power in 2018 thanks to an electorate weary of the dynastic politics of the country's two major parties, with the popular former sports star promising to sweep away decades of entrenched corruption and cronyism.

Even after he was ousted from power, he remains popular. His speeches have been drawing top ratings on television. Highlights of the speeches trend on social media in Pakistan.

Saturday night's protest followed the arrest of a senior leader from Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, who authorities alleged had made anti-military remarks on a TV channel that was subsequently suspended.

Criticising the military -- which has ruled Pakistan for roughly half its 75-year history -- is considered a red line.

'Terrible and sad': Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan condemns attack on Salman Rushdie

In the midst of the turmoil over the detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill, former prime minister Imran Khan claimed on Wednesday that Pakistan is "descending into a banana republic."

“Descending into a banana republic. The civilised world will be shocked at our levels of barbarism," tweeted Imran Khan, along with a video of Gill being transported to the hospital. "The worst part is an easy target has been chosen to make an example of through torture and without a fair trial."

Pakistan 'descending into a banana republic', says Imran Khan after arrest of close aide Shahbaz Gill

Former prime minister Imran Khan called on his supporters in Lahore for real freedom. He has also called for fresh elections and slammed Zardari for chaos in Karachi. Imran Khan has also lauded India's foreign policy again.

Imran Khan's Lahore rally: Former Pak PM lauds India's foreign policy again

There have been several occasions where Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan has praised India for its strong independent foreign policy. He often expressed admiration of the Indian establishment for buying Russian oil in large quantities and defying sanctions imposed by the US following the invasion of Ukraine.

He has often used India’s strong policy to drive home the point that Pakistan’s ruling coalition government headed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is meek in pursuing its own interests.

On Saturday, Khan went a step further to express his appreciation by playing out a video clip of India's foreign minister Dr S Jaishankar during his mega Lahore Rally.

He pointed out how India is buying Russian oil despite the western pressure, while Pakistan is struggling to secure its people’s interest.

He then added, “Yeh hoti hai azad haqumat (This is what a strong and independent government looks like).”

“India, which got independence a day after us, is able to take a firm stand and design its foreign policy as per its people’s needs. Then why are they (Shehbaz) towing their (West) line.”

Jaishanakar, who was a keynote speaker, was responding to a question about India’s Russian oil purchases funding the war in Ukraine.

When he was asked by the moderator if India’s oil purchases are helping Russia’s cause in Ukraine, Jaishankar hit back saying, “Look I don't want to sound argumentative. If India buying Russia oil is funding the war... Tell me then, buying Russian gas is not funding the war? It's only Indian money and Russian oil coming to India funding the war and Russia's gas coming to Europe is not funding? Let's be a little even-handed.” he said.

He also spoke of how India’s increasing oil purchases are being played up without giving consideration to the low base of the previous imports.

"Europe is buying oil, Europe is buying gas...new package of sanctions, it is designed in a way that consideration has been given to the welfare of the population, pipeline have carve-outs... if you can be considerate to yourself, you can be considerate to other people. Imran Khan invites Pakistanis to 'Haqiqi Azadi' celebrations on August 13 in Lahore

Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan has admitted that forced conversions of young non-Muslim girls are carried out in the country.

While addressing a minority convention, the cricketer-turned-politician on Thursday condemned the forced conversions of Hindu girls to Islam in Sindh, reports Dawn.

“There is an ayat (verse) in the Holy Quran [that] there is no coercion in Islam. This is Allah’s commandment. Whoever forcefully converts a non-Muslim is disobeying Allah,” he was quoted as saying.

This is the first time that any politician has commented on the issue of forceful conversions in Pakistan.

Though there have been several reports of forced conversions, especially of minority Hindu girls, the governments and politicians in Pakistan have remained silent on the practice so far and have done little to address the issue.

In October last year, a parliamentary committee disallowed an anti-forced conversion bill to be taken up at the Parliament after the Ministry of Religious Affairs opposed the proposed law despite protests by legislators belonging to minority communities.

On November 26 last year, a report by the UK’s All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Pakistani Minorities, an informal, cross-party group formed by MPs and Members of the House of Lords, found that around 1,000 girls between the ages of 12-25 from minorities are forcibly converted to Islam in Pakistan every year and married to their abductors.

They had described the situation as a “human-rights catastrophe”.

According to the 2017 census, Hindus make up around 2 per cent of Pakistan population, an overwhelming majority of them — close to 90 per cent — residing in Sindh province bordering Hindu-majority neighbour India.

Last year, the United States had placed Pakistan on the list of “countries of particular concern” for religious freedom violations.

In 2016, Sindh province passed a law declaring forced conversion a punishable offence, but the region’s governor refused to ratify the legislation.

Watch | Conspiracy being devised to present my party and Pakistan army as opponents: Imran Khan

Trouble continues to mount for Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan, whose party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is accused of receiving funding from prohibited sources.

Recently, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ruled that Khan’s party had received millions of dollars as prohibited and illegal funds. ECP also issued a notice to the party asking why the funds should not be confiscated.

The long-awaited verdict was announced in the first week of August by a three-member ECP bench, which was headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja.

PTI founding member Akbar S Babar had filed the case. It had been pending since November 14, 2014.

ECP had also issued a notice to Khan and ordered him to appear personally on August 23 at the hearing in the prohibited funding case.

In a recent development, PTI led by Imran Khan on Wednesday (August 10) challenged ECP's verdict in the Islamabad High Court.

Imran Khan has rejected the verdict, stating that it is a part of a political vendetta against him. Khan also asked Sikander Sultan Raja to resign.

News agencies reported that the additional secretary general Omar Ayyub asked the court on behalf of the party to declare the election commission's decision as illegal. The writ also asked to annul the show-cause notice issued to the party.

In a speech on Thursday, Khan rejected the verdict and other allegations. He said that the funding was received by the party in 2012 when it was not prohibited.

As seen by the news agency Reuters, ECP's ruling stated: "The commission is satisfied that the contributions and donations have been received by the respondent party from prohibited sources."

The verdict also mentioned that the party hid 13 accounts and the declaration submitted to the commission about the party finances by Khan as its chairman from 2008 to 2013 was “found to be grossly inaccurate”.

Trouble continues to mount for Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan, whose party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is accused of receiving funding from prohibited sources. He said that the funding was received by the party in 2012 when it was not prohibited. The verdict also mentioned that the party hid 13 accounts and the declaration submitted to the commission about the party finances by Khan as its chairman from 2008 to 2013 was “found to be grossly inaccurate”.
