As Pakistan reels under the double whammy of climate catastrophe and economic downturn, opposition leader Imran Khan is expected to give a call for a march on Islamabad, once the floods recede, according to former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. Reportedly, Ahmed took to Twitter on Sunday to lash the current government and announce the decision of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief. “The IMF struck yet another deal with the government for recovery of Rs 608 billion. First they robbed the national treasury and now they are looking to pick people’s pockets,” tweeted Rashid. The Awami Muslim League (AML) chief further asserted that floods had opened the eyes of the people of Sindh and dented the reputation of the government. “The floods have opened the eyes of the people of Sindh […] the floods have destroyed the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) reputation. Imran Khan to march on Islamabad once floods ease, says Sheikh Rashid

Former Pakistan PM, Imran Khan has landed himself visibly in more trouble and critique following a statement that he made during a political rally on Sunday.

Khan was addressing a rally in Faisalabad where he said the government is stalling elections to bring the army chief of choice, adding that only a free and fair election can ensure political stability in Pakistan and the government is running away from doing so because they want to "install an army chief of their choice in November", he also said that the current Pakistani dispensation wants to do so because if a "patriotic Army Chief is appointed, he would ask them about their ill-gotten wealth".

The comments have seen sharp critique on Imran Khan and his choice of words, including that from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court and the military itself.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while taking to Twitter said that Khan's comments were "despicable utterances to malign institutions are touching new levels every day", adding, "He is now indulging in direct mud-slinging & poisonous allegations against Armed Forces & its leadership. His nefarious agenda is clearly to disrupt & undermine Pakistan."

Pakistan's defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif while addressing a press conference in Islamabad said that Imran Khan has become a threat to the country’s security, "Imran Khan made wrong statement about the army chief at the rally. Many army chiefs were appointed in Pakistan. The sanctity of some institutions is for Pakistan’s security, Imran Khan should not play with the country for its own interests".

The Islamabad High Court Chief Justice, Justice Athar Minallah while hearing a petition regarding the censoring of Imran Khan's speeches, censured Imran Khan over his COAS appointment remarks asking Imran Khan's consul to do some self-accountability.

In a very strongly worded statement, the Pakistani military's PR wing stated that "Pakistan Army is aghast at the defamatory and uncalled for statement about the senior leadership of Pakistan Army by Chairman PTI during a political rally at Faisalabad. Regrettably, an attempt has been made to discredit and undermine senior leadership of Pakistan Army".

The military statement reiterated the laid out procedure for the appointment of the COAS while expressing displeasure over Khan's comments said that "Senior politicians trying to stir controversies on appointment of COAS of Pakistan Army, the procedure for which is well defined in the constitution, is most unfortunate and disappointing. Senior leadership of Army has decades long impeccable meritorious service to prove its patriotic and professional credentials beyond any doubt. Politicising the senior leadership of Pakistan Army and scandalising the process of selection of COAS is neither in the interest of the state of Pakistan nor of the institution."

Pakistan's anti-terrorism court on Thursday extended former Prime Minister Imran Khan's pre-arrest bail for two weeks on terrorism charges relating to a speech, his lawyer said. Khan had appeared in court amid tight security. His pre-arrest bail had expired on August 31 and now the bail has been approved until September 12 and covers several new charges.

"It is not at all a case of terrorism," Faisal Chaudhry, his lawyer, told Reuters. Khan and his aides have termed all charges against him as politically motivated.

The bail extension comes a day after a lower court gave him a week to respond to contempt charges in a separate case related to his comments.

Pak court suspends ban on broadcasting Imran's speeches; raps electronic watchdog

A Pakistani journalist has been arrested for reportedly attributing "disrespectful" remarks against Islam to former prime minister Imran Khan, as per local media reports. According to an article in Dawn newspaper, Rawalpindi police on Saturday filed a complaint at the RA Bazar police station against journalist Waqar Satti.

A cable operator named Chaudhry Nasir Qayyum filed a complaint under Sections 295-A and 500 of the Pakistan Penal Code, and the case was subsequently registered.

The complainant informed the police that he came across a tweet on August 24 while at his office in which a man named Waqar Satti described why he "hates" Imran and the reasons why he is against the former prime minister, according to the first information report (FIR) reported by Dawn.

FIR mentioned statements that, according to the complainant, "disrespected" Islam. "Imran Khan has not mentioned any such words mentioned in Waqar Satti's tweet -- in any of his speeches," the FIR quoted the complainant as saying. Satti's acts, he continued, had hurt his religious sentiments "as well as those of thousands of other Muslims."

A veteran journalist was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on Saturday, further illustrating how the state of press freedom in Pakistan is deteriorating.

According to Dawn, the event happened in the Toba Tek Singh district of Pakistan's Punjab when the murdered journalist Muhammad Younis was traveling on his motorcycle toward his farms at Mouza Manganwala when two guys hiding in a field opened fire.

The journalist was shot, killed there and then, and the perpetrators ran from the scene.

Following the terrible murder, Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Faisal Shahkar requested a report from Faisalabad Regional Police Officer (RPO) Babar Sarfraz Alpa.

Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf in trouble following more audio leaks

Bloomberg reported that the Pakistani Army is divided over the support of former prime minister Imran Khan.

Khan has sought to rally supporters in the world's fifth most populous country to hit the streets since his ouster in a no-confidence vote in April.

The dilemma that the Pakistan military faces are that the more they try to seek to boot Khan out of politics, the greater the risk he becomes even more popular.

Although most analysts agree current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inherited the country's economic woes, Khan blames the current government for soaring inflation.

Pakistani Army divided over support for former prime minister Imran Khan: Report

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill, who is Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan's close aide, filed a bail petition in the sedition case on Thursday (August 25), local media reported.

As per a Pakistan-based ARY News report, Gill stated that the case against him was registered on a political basis and his remarks were distorted and taken in the wrong context.

Shahbaz is currently in jail on judicial remand on charges of sedition and inciting mutiny in the army.

He was arrested on August 9 after he made controversial remarks, apparently about the nation's army during an ARY News bulletin. The comments were deemed as "highly hateful and seditious" by the country's media authority.

"I'm a professor and teach students at various universities abroad," Gill said later and also added that he is fixed in the case based on "dishonesty".

Media reports mentioned that Gill has pleaded with the court to grant him bail in the case.

Meanwhile, Gill recently confirmed that he was subjected to sexual abuse in custody after PTI supremo Imran Khan made shocking revelations regarding the abuse.

Gill confirmed sexual abuse when a reporter asked him about it during the raid. A video of his reply has been circulating on social media platforms. In the video, he did not face the camera but confirmed the allegation.

Dawn reported citing the petition that the first information report (FIR) registered against Gill was "concocted, cryptic and baseless".

The petition, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, also contended that the FIR was "a pack of lies and it is registered on the behalf of the incumbent government to settle political scores with the applicant party PTI and its leadership including Imran Khan".

The entire action was "patently illegal and politically motivated" and amounted to a colourable exercise of power by the state, the petition further said.
