WION Dispatch | Pakistan court drops contempt of court case against former PM Imran Khan

A Pakistani court on Monday accepted an apology tendered by former prime minister Imran Khan and dropped a contempt of court case against him, his defence lawyer said, a ruling that ease the threat to him of disqualification from politics.

The Islamabad High Court had deferred Khan's indictment over the contempt case after he apologised to the court in person late last month.

A convicted politician is liable to be disqualified from contesting elections and holding a public office for at least five years under Pakistani law.

"Imran Khan extended his apology in honour and respect for the judiciary, and the court today reciprocated by discharging the case against him," defence lawyer Faisal Chaudhry told Reuters.

The charges were related to a speech by Khan in which he was accused of threatening police and judicial officers after one of his close aides was denied bail in a sedition case.

Khan and his legal team subsequently maintained that his remarks did not amount to a threat.

The cricket star-turned-politician has faced a spate of legal woes since his ouster in a confidence vote in April by a united opposition led by his successor, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Khan has been leading rallies since his dismissal demanding snap elections, which the ruling coalition has rejected, saying voting will be held as scheduled later next year.

Senior journalist Ghulam Abbas Shah claims that Pakistan's health ministry is seeking permission for the import.

"After the spread of malaria in #Pakistan, the ministry of health asked the government of Pakistan for permission to buy mosquito nets from #India. There is an urgent need for 71 lakh mosquito nets in 26 districts of Pakistan," tweeted Shah.

He further claimed that in the past two months, two lakh people have contracted malaria in the flood-affected Sindh and Balochistan, with 22 per cent of those cases being of the plasmodium falciparum kind.

As per a Reuters report, authorities said on Wednesday that 324 people had died from skin diseases, diarrhoea, and malaria in several of Pakistan's flood-ravaged districts. They also warned that if necessary relief doesn't arrive, the situation might spiral out of control.

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan lauded India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi while comparing him to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the issue of corruption. In a video that has gone viral, former PM Khan is seen talking about the properties that Sharif owns outside Pakistan.

He then made a scathing attack on Sharif, saying, "No other leader except Sharif in the world has properties worth billions."

"Tell me about one country whose Premier or leader has billions worth of properties outside the country. Even in our neighbouring country, how many properties does PM Modi has outside India?" he said while addressing a public gathering.

"No one can imagine how many assets and properties he possesses abroad," Imran Khan added.

Imran has been showering praise on India for some time now. Earlier, he was seen praising India's foreign policy.

He praised India for buying the discounted oil from Russia and said that his government was also working on the same thing with the help of an independent foreign policy and slammed the government for "running around like a headless chicken with the economy in a tailspin".

"Despite being part of the Quad, India sustained pressure from the US and bought discounted Russian oil to provide relief to the masses. This is what our government was working to achieve with the help of an independent foreign policy," Imran Khan tweeted.

Earlier in April, he lauded India as "khuddar qaum" (very self-respecting people) and said that no superpower can dictate terms to the neighbouring country.

Imran Khan praises PM Modi while slamming PM Sharif over owning foreign properties

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been accused of committing treason for consulting his elder brother and ex-PM ‘fugitive’ Nawaz Sharif in London for the appointment of the next Army Chief.

A resolution was passed by the Punjab state assembly in this regard, seeking action against the prime minister under Article 6 (treason) of Pakistan’s Constitution.

The resolution was introduced by Punjab Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Basharat Raja on Monday and it was passed with a majority vote against Sharif.

Punjab province is ruled by ousted ex-PM Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and its ally party Pakistan Muslim League (Q)—a centre-right party in Pakistan.

The resolution claims that the PM met “fugitive” Nawaz Sharif, a three-time prime minister of Pakistan, in London a couple of days ago on the appointment of the new army chief, which not only amounts to the prime minister’s oath preventing him from sharing sensitive matters with unrelated persons but also an insult to the institution of the army.

Shehbaz was in London to attend the state funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

According to local media reports, he also met his brother Nawaz during his stay in the city and discussed the appointment of the next Army chief with him.

The former PM has been living in London since November 2019 after Lahore High Court granted him bail for eight weeks on medical grounds.

London Nawaz was serving a seven-year sentence in a corruption case at Lahore jail.

The controversy surrounding the meet comes at a time when incumbent Pakistan Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa is due to retire in late November this year.

Pak’s Punjab assembly passes resolution to initiate treason charges against PM Shehbaz Sharif

A court in Islamabad on Monday set aside the terrorism charges against former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan for allegedly threatening a female judge and senior police officers at a rally.

A two-member bench headed by Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Athar Minallah had reserved the verdict on PTI's plea earlier in the day.

In the same FIR, on other clauses, the relevant authorities will decide but the matter of terrorism has been set aside, the high court said in the order.

The cricketer-turned-politician was booked under sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ACT) for making threatening remarks against an additional sessions judge and senior officials of the Islamabad Police at a rally.

Khan's lawyer contended the charge, saying that there are some basic factors required to warrant terrorism charges and that these factors were absent in the case.

"A terror case can be lodged for creating an atmosphere of fear and terror, not on the possibility of creation of such an atmosphere," he said in the court.

He argued that Khan was speaking about taking legal action and lodging a case against an IG and DIG. He claimed that a "mastermind" was responsible for this complaint against Khan.

His party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had moved the court seeking transit bail for Khan, but the top court directed the former PM to approach an anti-terrorism court (ATC) since he was booked under terrorism charges.

The complaint that was filed against Khan states that he threatened Additional Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry and police officers during a rally at Fatima Jinnah Park in Islamabad.

The FIR further states that Khan’s main aim was to prevent the police officers and judiciary from carrying out their legal obligations.

The FIR was registered following the complaint of Magistrate Ali Javed at Islamabad's Margalla Police Station under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

According to local reports, at the rally Khan warned that he would “not spare” Islamabad's inspector-general, deputy inspector general, and the female magistrate.

“We will not spare the IG and DIG,” he said while addressing the gathering.

After blaming a US-led conspiracy for the change in regime, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has met former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) analyst and lobbyist Robin Raphel, according to media reports.

Local media reported that the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) wants to create in-roads into the Biden administration to fix its image and relations with Washington.

Following his accusations against American diplomat Donald Lu for conspiring against the then government under Khan, the former cricketer also met the Biden administration's representative Ilhan Omar.
