Antarctica is heating up faster than expected. A scientific study reveals that it's warming at nearly double the global rate. Now, this could have significant consequences for rising sea levels.

Antarctica heating faster than expected

Temperatures all over the world are expected to rise to 32 degrees Celsius this week as a delayed heatwave gets underway.

A hat-trick for warmest months

The world has broiled through, what the meteorologists call the most searing Northern Hemisphere summer that has ever been recorded, with August capping a season of severe temperatures.

Last month was not only the hottest August scientists ever recorded but also the second most warm month measured after July, said the World Meteorological Organisation and the European climate service Copernicus on Wednesday (September 6).

August was nearly 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than pre-industrial averages.&nbsp;

As per a statement by the WMO and Copernicus, the oceans, which constitute 70% of the Earth's surface, were recorded at about 21 C (69.8 F), which is the hottest ever and have set high-temperature marks for three consecutive months.

Scientists have blamed human practices like the burning of coal, oil and natural gas for climate change.

Climatologist Andrew Weaver said that world leaders and governments were also to be blamed for the current climate situation.&nbsp;

“It’s time for global leaders to start telling the truth,” the Associated Press quoted Weaver, a professor at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria in Canada, as saying. “We will not limit warming to 1.5 C; we will not limit warming to 2.0 C. It’s all hands on deck now to prevent 3.0 C global warming — a level of warming that will wreak havoc worldwide.”&nbsp;

Copernicus, which is a unit of the European Union’s space programme, has records going back to 1940, but in the United Kingdom and the United States, global records go back to the mid-1800s and those weather and science agencies are soon anticipated to report that the summer was a record-breaker.

“What we are observing, not only new extremes but the persistence of these record-breaking conditions, and the impacts these have on both people and planet, are a clear consequence of the warming of the climate system,” Copernicus Climate Change Service Director Carlo Buontempo said.

While the world's air and oceans were setting records for heat, Antarctica persisted with setting records for low amounts of sea ice, the WMO said.

“Antarctic sea ice extent was literally off the charts, and the global sea surface temperature was once again at a new record,” WMO's secretary-general, Petteri Taalas, said in a statement released to the media. "It is worth noting that this is happening BEFORE we see the full warming impact of the El Nino event, which typically plays out in the second year after it develops.”

<h2>2023 likely to be the hottest year on record, says EU climate monitor</h2>

2023 is likely to be the hottest year in human history, said the EU climate monitor in a statement on Wednesday.

As per a report released by the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the average global temperature in June, July and August was 16.77 degrees Celsius (62.19 degrees Fahrenheit), exceeding the earlier record in the year 2019 which was 16.48C.

"The three months that we've just had are the warmest in approximately 120,000 years, so effectively human history," news agency AFP quoted C3S deputy director Samantha Burgess as saying.

"Looking at the additional heat we have in the surface ocean, the probability is that 2023 will end up being the warmest year on record," Burgess said.

The average global temperature recorded through the first eight months of 2023 is the second-hottest, with only 0.01C below the benchmark 2016 level.

If the Northern Hemisphere has a "normal" winter, "we can almost virtually say that 2023 will be the warmest year that humanity has experienced," Burgess said.

<h2>'Climate breakdown has begun,' says Guterres</h2>

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Wednesday warned that the climate was breaking down.

“The dog days of summer are not just barking, they are biting,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

"Our planet has just endured a season of simmering -- the hottest summer on record. Climate breakdown has begun," Guterres said.

"Scientists have long warned what our fossil fuel addiction will unleash," he added. "Our climate is imploding faster than we can cope, with extreme weather events hitting every corner of the planet."

Guterres further said that the surging temperatures demand a surge in action.

"Leaders must turn up the heat now for climate solutions," he said.

<h2>Scientists react to C3S report</h2>

"2023 is the year that climate records were not just broken but smashed," news agency AFP quoted Mark Maslin, a professor of climatology at University College London as saying.

"Extreme weather events are now common and getting worse every year -- this is a wake-up call to international leaders."

"Global warming continues because we have not stopped burning fossil fuels, it is that simple," said Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London.&nbsp;

Explainer | Searing temperatures wreak havoc globally, UN chief says 'climate breakdown has begun'

The worst and largest wildfire ever recorded in the EU is still active in the Evros region, near Greece's border with Turkey, where the flames have burned over 83,000 hectares of land. But this is just one of the several wildfires recorded this summer in Greece, which have also resulted in at least 20 lives lost.

According to the weather forecasts, the temperatures in most parts of England could reach 32 degrees Celsius midweek. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow warning in several regions until 21:00 BST on Sunday. Scotland and Northern Ireland might experience abnormally high temperatures. Wales is likely to witness hot weather conditions. The regions included in the warning are London, the South East, the South West, the East and West Midlands, the East, North West and Yorkshire and Humber, BBC reported. According to the Met Office, temperature in Southern England and South-East Wales might reach 30 degrees Celsius. As per the heat-health alert, people with pre-existing health conditions should take extra care during the scorching weather. The United Kingdom is experiencing a hot climate after a 'summer of poor weather.' The weather was wetter and colder than average in July, and the maximum temperatures fell to 20 degrees Celsius. However, the UK recorded the hottest June in 2023. The weather predictions said the warm conditions might continue through Tuesday, and the expected maximum temperature is 31 degrees Celsius. Oliver Claydon, Met office spokesman, told the PA news agency, "We will see good sunny conditions through the week with cloudless skies and some high temperatures by the time we get to Wednesday and Thursday, where we could see 31, maybe 32 degrees Celsius." He said the temperatures would be "quite widely spread" and warned that Wednesday night could be "a tropical night" with temperatures likely not dropping below 20 degrees Celsius. According to the Met Office, temperatures could hit 31 degrees Celsius on Friday. However, the weather might become more cloudy. There are some chances of rain in North-West Scotland. "There's no indication at the moment of another strong heatwave after this," stated Claydon. As per him, the conditions might change over the weekend. The temperatures could return to normal by the middle of next week. Due to climate change, heat waves have become more common and harsher. In 2022, the UK recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for the first time. Some scientists suggest such scorching weather is "virtually impossible without climate change." The Met Office has also revealed why some "picturesque" sunsets occurred in the UK. Forecasters believe they were due to the "Saharan dust," expected to reach sections of the country later this week. On July 6, Earth experienced a new unofficial record high average temperature, marking the third milestone in a week of scorching temperatures that made it the hottest period on record.

According to data from the University of Maine's Climate Reanalyzer, the global average temperature reached 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17.23 degrees Celsius), surpassing the previous marks of 62.9 degrees Fahrenheit and 17.18 degrees Celsius set earlier in the week, reported the Associated Press.

While the accuracy of the Maine tool's findings has been questioned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the data aligns with concerning climate change patterns observed worldwide.

<h2>Sweltering heatwaves and unusual warmth</h2>

The global average temperature includes regions enduring extreme and hazardous heatwaves, such as Jingxing, China, where temperatures soared to nearly 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius).

Additionally, even traditionally colder areas like Antarctica experienced unusually warm conditions, with temperatures up to eight degrees Fahrenheit (4.5 degrees Celsius) above normal across much of the continent this week.

<h2>NOAA's cautionary note and climate change</h2>

While NOAA expressed reservations about validating the University of Maine's analysis and its reliance on computer modeling, the agency acknowledged the ongoing warm period resulting from climate change. The Maine data, although not officially confirmed, has been widely viewed as another distressing indicator of the global climate crisis. Climate scientists have voiced their lack of surprise at the unofficial temperature records, highlighting the urgent need for action.

Sweltering heatwaves and unusual warmth The global average temperature includes regions enduring extreme and hazardous heatwaves, such as Jingxing, China, where temperatures soared to nearly 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius). Additionally, even traditionally colder areas like Antarctica experienced unusually warm conditions, with temperatures up to eight degrees Fahrenheit (4.5 degrees Celsius) above normal across much of the continent this week. NOAA's cautionary note and climate change While NOAA expressed reservations about validating the University of Maine's analysis and its reliance on computer modeling, the agency acknowledged the ongoing warm period resulting from climate change. The Maine data, although not officially confirmed, has been widely viewed as another distressing indicator of the global climate crisis. Climate scientists have voiced their lack of surprise at the unofficial temperature records, highlighting the urgent need for action. Hotter than ever: Earth sets new heat record for the third time in a week

Torrid summer hits China's northern cities

The latest data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction reveals that global temperatures have reached a new record, emphasising the alarming consequences of continually rising greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels.

On Monday, the average global temperature soared to 17°C (63°F), surpassing the previous record of 16.9°C set in August 2016. This new milestone highlights the exceptional intensity of the summer experienced in the northern hemisphere in 2023, serving as a stark reminder of the sluggish global efforts in addressing emissions reduction.

<h2>Achievement not deserving of celebration</h2>

“This is not a milestone we should be celebrating, it's a death sentence for people and ecosystems,” Friederike Otto, a senior lecturer&nbsp;at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment told Bloomberg. “Worryingly, it won't be the hottest day for a long time.”&nbsp;The&nbsp;El Niño weather phenomenon&nbsp;is set to push&nbsp;global temperatures higher, she said.

Explaining the crisis, Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist at Berkeley Earth, told the Guardian:&nbsp;“Unfortunately, it promises to only be the first in a series of new records set this year as increasing emissions of (carbon dioxide) and greenhouse gases, coupled with a growing El Nino event, push temperatures to new highs.”

During the period between 1979 and 2000, the world's average air temperature typically ranged from approximately 12 degrees Celsius to just below 17 degrees Celsius throughout the year. However, at the start of July, the average temperature reached 16.2 degrees Celsius, marking a significant deviation from the norm.

While this record is yet to be validated by other measurements, it is highly likely that it will be surpassed in the coming weeks as the summer season intensifies in the northern hemisphere. Historically, the average global temperature continues to climb until the end of July or early August.

Even in the previous month, average global temperatures for the start of June were the highest ever recorded by the European Union's Copernicus climate monitoring unit, indicating an alarming trend of increasing warmth.

<h2>Heatwave in southern United States</h2>

The southern United States has been grappling with a significant surge in temperatures, as a scorching heatwave persists for the past three weeks. Stretching from Florida to Arizona, this deadly heatwave has subjected the region to triple-digit temperatures. Meanwhile, China continues to endure a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures surpassing 35°C (95°F). North Africa, too, has experienced extreme heat, with temperatures nearing 50°C (122°F).

Even in Antarctica, where it is currently winter, unusually high temperatures have been recorded. Ukraine's Vernadsky Research Base, situated in the Argentine Islands of the icy continent, recently broke its July temperature record, reaching 8.7°C (47.6°F). Furthermore, the United Kingdom has witnessed its hottest June this year.

The India Meteorological Department reports that southern peninsular India experienced the warmest June since 1901, with an average maximum temperature of 34.05 degrees Celsius.

Concerns among researchers regarding escalating temperatures on both land and sea have persisted throughout this year. The global temperature recorded on Monday was the highest since satellite monitoring commenced in 1979, according to BBC reports. Experts believe it is also the highest since the widespread use of instrumental records began in the late 19th century.

<h2>China's heatwave situation</h2>

China is facing an unprecedented heatwave, as the country witnesses a record-breaking number of scorching hot days. According to the National Climate Center, China has experienced the highest number of days with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1961, averaging 4.1 such days in the first half of this year, reported CNN.&nbsp;

The data is based on recordings from weather stations across the country, indicating the widespread impact of the heatwave. China has already encountered four regional heatwaves this summer, which arrived earlier, were more extensive, and reached greater intensity compared to previous years, as reported by the National Climate Center.

The northern part of China, with its densely populated areas and millions of residents, has been particularly affected, and more heatwaves are expected in the upcoming weeks. Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei province, has experienced the highest number of high-temperature days so far this year, followed by Beijing.

In mid-June, over 200 million people in northern China endured daily temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). During the fourth and most severe heatwave from June 21 to 30, Beijing witnessed a record-breaking temperature above 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 degrees Fahrenheit), marking the hottest June day ever recorded in the capital.

The National Climate Center characterised this heatwave as the most extreme in China for the past ten years during June, a month typically uncommon for experiencing repeated heatwaves. The continuous and intense heat poses significant challenges for the population and calls for increased measures to address the effects of climate change.

<h2>Indians feel&nbsp;the heat too</h2>

India is one of the nations most exposed and susceptible to heat.&nbsp;<a href="https://journals.plos.org/climate/article?id=10.1371/journal.pclm.0000156">Studies</a>&nbsp;suggest that the frequency of hot days and nights&nbsp;has risen significantly, and is estimated to increase between two and four-fold by 2050. Additionally, heatwaves are also predicted to arrive earlier, last longer and occur more frequently.

Those working outdoors as daily-wage labourers are the worst hit during a heatwave episode. They mostly lack access to cooling amenities like fans and air conditioners and must continue working in the blistering heat to make ends meet.

“Heatwaves in India pose significant risks to human health as certain strata of society are more affected due to their socioeconomic and health conditions,” Shivang Agarwal, PhD scholar in environmental health and engineering, Johns Hopkins University told WION.&nbsp;

The World Meteorological Organisation has confirmed the commencement of an El Nino weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, which is expected to contribute to a further increase in temperatures above historical norms in the coming year.

“The average global surface air temperature reaching 17°C &nbsp;for the first time since we have reliable records available is a significant symbolic milestone in our warming world,” said climate researcher Leon Simons, reported the BBC.

“Now that the warmer phase of El Nino is starting, we can expect a lot more daily, monthly and annual records breaking in the next 1.5 years,” he said.

Rising temperatures will make it harder to sleep: Study

Researchers warned on Monday (May 22) that more than a fifth of the human population will face extreme and probably life-threatening heat by 2100 if current policies to limit global warming continue. The report was published in the journal Nature Sustainability, reported AFP.

According to the report, the countries with the most people at risk are India (600 million), Nigeria (300 million), Indonesia (100 million), the Philippines and Pakistan (80 million each).

"That's a profound reshaping of the habitability of the surface of the planet, and could lead potentially to the large-scale reorganisation of where people live," said lead author Tim Lenton, director of the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter.

The findings underlined the immediate need to take steps in order to cap global warming at 1.5C. It said that doing so would sharply reduce the number of those at risk. The number would fall to half a billion. This will be around five&nbsp;per cent of the projected 9.5 billion global population.

Just under 1.2C of warming, to date, has already amplified the intensity or duration of heatwaves, droughts and wildfires beyond what could have occurred minus the carbon pollution generated by burning fossil fuels and forests. The last eight years were the hottest on record.

"The costs of global warming are often expressed in financial terms, but our study highlights the phenomenal human cost of failing to tackle the climate emergency," said Lenton.

"For every 0.1C of warming above present levels, about 140 million more people will be exposed to dangerous heat."

<h2>The threshold for 'dangerous heat'</h2>

The new findings have found the threshold for 'dangerous heat'. The report says that it is at a mean annual temperature (MAT) of 29C.

Historically, human settlements have been densest around two MATs. 13C when it comes to temperate zones and 27C in more tropical climes.

Global warming is pushing up the thermostat everywhere, but the risk of tipping into lethal heat is clearly higher in regions already close to the 29C red line.

Studies have reportedly shown that sustained high temperatures at or beyond this threshold have strong links to greater mortality, and reduced productivity of labour and crop yields. This also increases the likelihood of more conflict and infectious diseases.

As recently as 40 years ago, only 12 million people worldwide were exposed to such extremes.&nbsp;

That number has today increased five-fold, and will climb ever more steeply in the coming decades, the study found.&nbsp;
