Chinese state media reported on Tuesday (September 7) that the country logged in hottest August since record-keeping began. This followed an intense summer heat wave. The unusual rise in temperature caused rivers to dry up. The heat scorched crops and triggered isolated blackouts.

The heat wave in southern China last month has suspected by experts to have been one of the worst heat waves in global history. Parts of Sichuan province and city of Chongqing recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius for a string of days.

The average temperature nationwide was 22.4C in August, exceeding the norm by 1.2C, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing the country's weather service.

Some 267 weather stations across the country matched or broke temperature records last month, the report said.

The month was also China's third-driest August on record. The recorded average rainfall was 23.1 per cent lower than usual.

"The average number of high-temperature days was abnormally high, and regional high-temperature processes are continuing to impact our country," CCTV reported the weather service as saying.

Scientists say extreme weather like heat waves, droughts and flash floods is becoming more frequent and intense due to human-induced climate change.

Europe is facing a major energy crisis ahead of winter which has been caused by shortages from a lack of Russian fuel. While the White House asserted its support for Ukraine, it has also outlined high stakes for Europe with the looming energy crisis.

Warning of an impending heat risk, a new study has claimed that an "extreme heat belt" is forming in the north of Chicago that could affect more than 100 million people in the next 30 years

The research, which was released on Monday by nonprofit First Street Foundation, said that this "heat belt" could encompass the America's heartland stretching from Texas and Louisiana north to the Great Lakes, reports AFP.

They said this could shoot up the heat index up to 125 Fahrenheit (52C) at least one day per year by 2053, affecting 107 million people in 2053.

The heat index is commonly referred to as the “feels like” temperature. It represents what the outside temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity and air temperature are combined.

"These increases in local temperatures result in significant implications for communities that are not acclimated to warmer weather relative to their normal climate," the report said.

The biggest shift in the local temperature has been predicted to occur in Miami-Dade County, Florida, where the current hottest temperature touches 103 Fahrenheit seven days per year. The number is expected to increase to 34 days at 103 degrees by 2053, according to the study.

The report further warned that the increase in the use of air conditioning as a result of such temperature spikes will further strain energy grids, leading to more frequent and longer lasting brownouts.

The findings came days after the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s monthly climate reporton August 8 found that last month was the country’s third-hottest July since record-keeping began nearly 130 years ago.

Splooting, or just stretching one's body out, is the most effective way that our four-legged friends (or foes) try to beat the heat, even though it may seem unusual to humans. Panda sploots are particularly hilarious, if you've had the chance to witness one.

Just in case you see any squirrels in New York City parks doing the same thing -- lying on their tummies and stretching their back legs out behind them, parks officials want you to know that its absolutely normal. Britain has issued their first ever “red” warning for extreme heat, declaring a national emergency as forecasters predict record temperatures that will put even healthy people at risk of serious illness and death.

UK bracing for record-setting heat, issues red alert

Politicians throughout Europe are perspiring as their populations face a heatwave. Five countries in the continent are facing severely high temperatures. An urgent cabinet meeting was convened in the United Kingdom to handle the country’s first-ever ‘extreme red’ warning. A lawmaker in France called the oppressive heat ‘hell.’ The Portuguese prime minister is keeping an eye on threatening woodland fires. Similarly, Southern Europe is already battling the consequences of more scorching summer heat, which scientists say is a result of climate change. The temperatures in Western Europe are expected to reach more than 40 degrees Celsius next week, reported Politico.

5 major countries dealing with ‘hell’ in Europe's heat

India experienced not just more heat this summer, but more air pollution too. A new analysis reveals that India's national capital New Delhi saw a rise in air pollution during summers in 2022 compared to 2021 with the city's particulate matter levels significantly breaching the permissible limits, a new analysis said on Wednesday. According to the new analysis by NCAP Tracker, an initiative by environment organizations Climate Trends and Respirer Living Sciences, PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels in New Delhi this year were five times higher than the levels permitted by India's Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) across the four summer months of March, April, May and June.

The NCAP Tracker, designed to track India's progress in achieving the 2024 clean air targets set under the country's National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), took a look at air pollution in 10 Indian cities - New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Agra, Chandigarh, Chennai, Jodhpur, Lucknow and Patna. The analysis showed that all these cities except Chennai recorded higher than permissible PM 2.5 levels in March 2022 and all cities breached permissible limits for PM 10 levels.

In April, levels improved only in Kolkata and it joined Chennai in the cities which did not breach safety limits for PM 2.5, it said, adding that Chennai was also the only city with PM 10 levels within safe limits during April, it said. As per the analysis, similar trends continued in May when only Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata saw PM 2.5 levels within safe limits and no city met the safety standard for PM 10 levels. The report said that with some parts of the country receiving rains in June 2022, five Indian cities – Agra, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai saw their PM 2.5 levels improve and within the CPCB safety limits.

As per India's Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), annual average permissible limits for PM 2.5 and PM 10 are 40 ug/m3 and 60 ug/m3 respectively. The World Health Organization's safe limits are lower at 5 ug/m3 and 15 ug/m3 respectively. The analysis also found that among the 10 cities, another pollutant, Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), breached annual safety limits of 40 ug/m3 in the cities of Patna and Delhi during March and April this year and in Chandigarh from April to June. As per CPCB, the annual average permissible limit for NO2 is 40 ug/m3 and as per WHO it is 10 ug/m3.

"This year, the country was reeling under multiple heatwaves from as early as March with record-breaking temperatures all across. March was the warmest in 121 years and the country recorded an average maximum temperature of 33.1 degrees Celsius, an all-time-high and 1.86 degrees Celsius above normal levels. Similar trends continued in the following months," it said. The Indian pollution watchdog CPCB and WHO have also given 24-hour safe limits for PM 2.5 and PM 10. While CPCB's 24-hour safe limits for PM 2.5 and PM 10 are 60 ug/m3 and 100 ug/m3 respectively, the WHO's 24-hour safe limits are lower at 15 ug/m3 and 45 ug/m3 for the two pollutants, respectively.

The analysis said that the average PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels for each day show that several Indian cities have continuous streaks of highly polluted days. "In April 2022, New Delhi did not have a single day when PM 2.5 met the CPCB’s 24-hour safe limit of 60 ug/m3. Similarly, a coastal city like Mumbai had only nine days when PM 2.5 concentration didn’t breach the safe limits. "Such prolonged exposure to high levels of air pollution can have an impact on human health," it said.

India launched the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) on 10th January 2019 to address air pollution in 102 cities, to which 20 more cities were added later in the year. These 122 cities are called non-attainment cities.

Kansas state authorities have said that extreme heat and humidity have killed at least 2000 cattle in Kansas. Increasing temperatures are threatening livestock.

US cattle industry is already suffering and producers have chosen to reduce herds. Russian invasion on Ukraine has meant that shortage of foodgrains has increased costs of animal feed.

Kansas is the third-largest US cattle state behind Texas and Nebraska, with more than 2.4 million cattle in feedlots.

Temperature and humidity have spiked over the weekend in western Kansas and cooling winds have disappeared.

Scarlett Hagins, spokesperson for the Kansas Livestock Association, said that the animals have not been able to acclimate to sudden change.

"It was essentially a perfect storm," said AJ Tarpoff, beef extension veterinarian for Kansas State University.

Temperatures reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius) in northwest Kansas by Monday, said Drew Lerner, president of World Weather Inc. This weekend, parts of western Kansas and the Texas panhandle will near 110 degrees, though stronger winds and lower humidity levels will help minimize cattle deaths, he said.

In many ways, Iley Joseph’s one-bedroom apartment was an ideal place to ride out a hurricane. It was on the third floor — much too high to flood — of a building that was sturdy and new, part of a sleek, gated community for older residents like him.

But in the days after Hurricane Ida, his home began to feel like a trap. The power failure that cut off electricity to New Orleans rendered Joseph’s air-conditioner useless and his refrigerator nothing more than a cupboard. Even worse, the outage froze the complex’s elevators in place, sealing him inside the building because his health problems prevented him from using the stairs.

Joseph, 73, insisted in telephone conversations with his sons that he was doing just fine. But in his apartment, No. 312, it kept getting hotter. On Sept. 2, the fourth day after the storm hit — the hottest yet — a friend found him lying still on the side of his bed.

“I call his name, he doesn’t respond,” said the friend, Jared Righteous. “I realized he was gone.”

Only in recent days, as the last lights flickered back on in New Orleans, have officials here discovered the true toll of Hurricane Ida. Unlike in the Northeast, where many who perished were taken by floodwaters and tornadoes, heat has emerged as the greatest killer in New Orleans.

Of 14 deaths caused by the storm in the city, Joseph’s and nine others are believed to be tied to the heat. Experts say there are probably more. And friends of those who died have begun to ask whether the government or apartment landlords could have done more to protect older residents before they died, often alone, in stiflingly hot homes.

“Heat is a hazard that we simply haven’t given sufficient attention to,” said David Hondula, a professor at Arizona State University who studies the effects of sweltering temperatures. “All cities are in the early stages of understanding what an effective heat response looks like.”

In New Orleans, officials set up air-conditioned cooling centers across the city and distributed food, water and ice around town. But for residents like Joseph who could not leave their buildings, the aid might as well have been worlds away.

All 10 people whose deaths have been tied to the heat were in their 60s and 70s, and they died over four broiling days, the last of which was Sept. 5, a full week after the storm.

Among the first was Corinne Labat-Hingle, a 70-year-old woman who had fled to Memphis during Hurricane Katrina but returned to New Orleans and was living at an apartment complex for older people near Saint Bernard Avenue, a short walk from the city’s largest park. She was found dead Sept. 2, when the temperature reached 93 degrees outdoors and was most likely higher inside her apartment.

Two days later, another 93-degree day, four people were found dead, including Reginald Logan, 74, whose body was discovered after a neighbor saw flies in his window. On Sept. 5, the heat index reached 101, and one of the last victims of the heat was found dead: Keith Law, a 65-year-old man who lived in the Algiers neighborhood.

Heat most likely contributes to more deaths each year than are officially recorded, Hondula said. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports fewer than 700 heat-related deaths a year, some studies have estimated 5,000 to 12,000. Last month, The New York Times found that 600 more people died in Oregon and Washington in the last week of June, during a heat wave, than normally would have, a number three times the state officials’ estimates of heat-related deaths.

This comes as heat waves are growing more frequent, longer lasting and more dangerous. The 2018 National Climate Assessment, a major scientific report by 13 federal agencies, notes that the number of hot days is increasing, and the frequency of heat waves in the United States jumped from an average of two per year in the 1960s to six per year by the 2010s.

People who die from the heat may not recognize their symptoms as life-threatening, and heat-related deaths can also occur suddenly, with little warning. The most frequent cause is cardiovascular failure, when the heart cannot pump blood fast enough. Less frequent are deaths from heat stroke, when a person’s internal temperature rises by several degrees and the body cannot cool off, causing organs like the brain, heart or kidneys to fail.

Laura Bergerol, a 65-year-old New Orleans photographer, died Sept. 5. She had planned to evacuate to Florida before the storm but told friends she had trouble finding a hotel room. By the time she arranged plans, it was too dangerous to leave. After the storm, an errant $400 charge on her bank account had left her without enough money to get out. She stocked up on candles and hunkered down in her second-floor apartment in an affordable complex built for artists in the Bywater neighborhood downriver from the French Quarter.

“Missed my window of opportunity,” she wrote on Twitter. “Curse you #HurricaneIda.”

Neighbors said Bergerol largely stayed in her apartment with the doors and windows closed. Still, she seemed to be surviving. On Sept. 3, she texted Josh Hailey, a neighbor, asking if she could visit his cat while he was out. “I have plenty of treats,” she wrote. The next day, she joined neighbors in the building’s courtyard for a showing of “Cinderella.”

On Sunday, Hailey let himself into her apartment when she did not answer the door. He found her lying on the floor and tried to resuscitate her, but it was too late. That evening, the neighbors played brass-band music in the courtyard and danced for Bergerol, recalling her vivid blue eyes and frequent, wide smile.

By then, city health officials had begun to realize the danger that older residents were facing. A day before Bergerol’s death, they evacuated eight apartments for older residents, including several where people had died. Now, city officials are considering mandating, during natural disasters, that subsidized apartments serving older or disabled residents have generators, conduct welfare checks or have a building manager on the property at all times, a spokesperson said.

The proposed measures are gaining momentum partly because of deaths like that of Joseph, the man stuck in apartment 312.

Joseph was well known at Village de Jardin, a relatively affordable complex in New Orleans East for people 55 and older. It is owned by the Louisiana Housing Corp., a state agency, and managed by Latter & Blum, a large real estate company that manages properties across several states. The housing agency said Latter & Blum had encouraged tenants to evacuate and then, after the storm, brought cooling buses to the property and supplies to tenants who chose to stay.

Joseph had retired years ago from a job selling car parts. He frequently chatted with neighbors, and his routine included grabbing coffee and beignets around town. He was known for his faith, his love of his family and, to some, his trademark reply, “Yes, indeed,” which led his grandchildren to call him Grandpa Yes Indeed. Many more people knew him for his humor, which is how he became friends with Righteous, 45, who was drawn to Joseph when he was cracking jokes at an event hosted by the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church.

In the days after the hurricane, neighbors looked out for Joseph, who was subsisting on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. One friend brought him a warm plate of food. A neighbor across the hall charged Joseph’s phone using a car battery and an inverter.

But Sept. 2 was the most grueling day yet. Around 1:45 p.m., the heat index was nearing 103, and Joseph’s phone had died again. He poked his head outside his door and motioned for a woman in the hallway to come closer. The woman, Rhonda Quinn, thought he looked unwell and asked if he needed some air. He brushed her off, joking that after days in the heat, he smelled too bad to go out, she said.

What he did need, he said, was to charge his phone to make a call. Quinn found someone to help, but when she tried to return the phone sometime before 3 p.m., he did not answer her repeated knocks. She assumed he had gone out, and she left.

Shortly after, Joseph’s friend from church, Righteous, pulled into the complex’s parking lot with a bag of oatmeal cream pies and other snacks. He, too, received no answer after knocking on Joseph’s door. When he opened it, he found Joseph slumped to the side of the bed, as if he had been sitting on its edge and looking out the window.

His death has left his two sons grief-stricken and stunned, unable to understand how their father could make it through the hurricane’s wrath without a scratch only to perish in the heat that followed.

“He didn’t die from flooding, he didn’t die from a lightning bolt,” said his oldest son, Iley Joseph Jr., 45. “It’s just, he’s gone.”

In many ways, Iley Joseph’s one-bedroom apartment was an ideal place to ride out a hurricane. It was on the third floor — much too high to flood — of a building that was sturdy and new, part of a sleek, gated community for older residents like him.

The burned body of a 79-year-old man was found in the Reggio Calabria area on Wednesday, while another man, aged 77, died in the same region after trying to shelter his herd from the flames, news agencies reported.

Their deaths follow those of a 53-year-old woman and her 35-year-old nephew, also in Reggio Calabria, who died last Friday trying to save the family olive grove.

The fire service on Thursday morning reported making 528 interventions in the past 12 hours, 230 in Sicily, "where the situation is currently under control", including in the Madonie mountain range, near Palermo.

Regional authorities in Sicily have declared a state of emergency as a result of the fires, while 50 voluntary fire-fighting teams from around Italy have flown in to help battle the blazes.

The fire service reported 100 interventions overnight in Calabria, with particularly difficult blazes in the areas of Reggio Calabria, Catanzaro and Cosenza.

An anticyclone is an area of high atmospheric pressure that in summer brings dry, hot weather.

Across the Mediterranean, Algeria has also been hit by fires, with the North African country starting three days of mourning on Thursday after the death toll rose to 69.

The Mediterranean has been singled out as a "climate change hotspot", with increasing temperatures and aridity lengthening fire seasons and doubling the areas potential burnt, according to a draft UN assessment seen exclusively by AFP.

Italian firefighters said Thursday they had battled more than 500 blazes overnight as another death was reported, taking the total toll linked to wildfires to four over the past week.

Italy firefighters battle 500 blazes after record heat

When the summer heat intensifies, all eyes are focused on the temperature. But often, experts say, it’s the heat index that should draw more concern.

While it’s the temperature that ends up on 10-day forecasts and electronic signs outside banks, the heat index is often a better indicator of the intensity of the heat, and the dangers it can present to people.

What is the heat index?

The heat index is a measure of how hot it really feels outside, when humidity and other factors are considered along with the temperature, according to Kimberly McMahon, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“The heat index matters — and this is especially true in the Northeast — because it includes the amount of moisture or humidity that’s in the air, and that moisture or humidity can make the air temperature feel even higher,” McMahon said.

Why is the heat index used?

Aside from using it to provide a more accurate measure of what it feels like outside, the National Weather Service relies on the heat index to let people know how much heat the human body can handle before it becomes dangerous.

Sometimes, if it’s humid enough, it doesn’t need to be that hot outside for the weather to be harmful.

“With the high humidity, it’s harder to have the human body sweat, and then have that sweat evaporate,” McMahon said. “With the inability to inefficiently cool off, that increases a person’s heat stress.”

For example, on a day when the temperature outside is 92 degrees and the humidity is 70 per cent, the heat index is 112 degrees. When the heat index reaches that level, it’s dangerous, and it can cause sunstroke, muscle cramps and heat exhaustion. For those doing physical activities or who are outside long enough under those conditions, heatstroke is also a risk..

The National Weather Service uses heat index values to know when to issue heat advisories, watches and warnings, which urge residents in an area to avoid being outside during the hottest parts of the day.

While other countries also use heat index to gauge how hot it feels outside, an additional measure used in some countries, such as Saudi Arabia, is wet-bulb temperature.

The National Weather Service refers to “WetBulb Globe Temperature” as a measure of heat stress under direct sunlight that factors in temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud coverage and the angle of the sun.

How common are heat-related illnesses?

Weather-related deaths and injuries are often associated with more drastic events like tornadoes and hurricanes, but heat-related illnesses are the leading cause of death related to weather or environmental events, according to the American Public Health Association.

Every year, more than 600 people across the country die because of extreme heat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Regardless of whether someone lives in an area where they are accustomed to the heat, McMahon said it’s important to pay attention to heat-related watches and warnings when they are in effect.

“Both heat is dangerous, whether it be heat with high humidities or the dry heat that they get out in the desert Southwest,” she said. “People need to always pay attention and take it seriously because it is the No. 1 weather-related killer in the United States.”

How is the heat index calculated?

The heat index is measured using a multiple regression analysis that uses the actual temperature and humidity to produce a number that is more representative of how hot it feels outside.

The equation is long (-42.379 + 2.04901523T + 10.14333127R - 0.22475541TR - 6.83783 x 10-3T2 - 5.481717 x 10-2R2 + 1.22874 x 10-3T2R + 8.5282 x 10-4TR2 - 1.99 x 10-6T2R2), which uses R to represent humidity and T to represent temperature.

Because that’s a long math problem to do on the fly, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses a simple chart that anyone can understand.

According to the chart, on a day when temperatures reach 106 degrees, and the humidity is 50 per cent, the heat index is 137 degrees.

Heat index values were created assuming shady conditions with a light wind, so full exposure to sunlight can make it feel even hotter by as much as 15 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

What is the Heat Index, and why does it matter?

In Athens' parliament square, the Evzones parade under their red berets and stifling heat.

With sweat beading on their foreheads, the presidential guards rehearse their choreography in front of a cluster of tourists as a new heatwave hits the Greek capital.

"They're amazing, but they must be suffering," says Jim Grace, an Irish tourist who, holding a bottle of water, watches them under the scorching sun.

"We're adapting," says his wife Esther Grace. "We're drinking lots of water and putting on sunscreen."

Dubbed a "dangerous" event due to how long it will last and the small difference between maximum and minimum temperatures, the heatwave is expected to peak on Monday, with temperatures likely reaching 42 to 44 degrees Celsius (107 to 111 degrees Fahrenheit).

Second heatwave of the summer

Greece has already experienced a heatwave earlier this summer, when temperatures reached 44 degrees Celsius for 11 days.

According to data from the National Observatory of Athens, this was the fifth longest heatwave in Greece in 40 years.

"These climatic phenomena are becoming more and more frequent," Konstantinos Lagouvardos, the observatory's director of meteorological research, says.

"Beyond the heatwaves, the most worrying thing is that average temperatures are rising considerably summer after summer.

"The average for Athens is now 34-35 degrees, which is two degrees higher than in previous years," he says.

"This is already the second heatwave of the summer, a third would be an unprecedented event."

Several municipalities have opened air-conditioned shelters for the homeless and vulnerable.

In Piraeus, at a short distance from the port where tourists escape to the islands, about 15 people come every day to find a little respite in one such centre.

"This is the fourth time we've opened an air-conditioned space this year," says Argyro Koika, a social worker at the centre.

The Ministry of Civil Protection has recommended protecting oneself from the sun by staying in shaded and air-conditioned places, avoiding physical activities and drinking water regularly.

The Met Office has issued new extreme heat weather warnings for the first time for parts of the UK. The temperatures are expected to peak on Thursday. The office warns of the potential impact of the heat on people's health, as the UK experiences a prolonged period of sweltering conditions. Steven Ramsdale, from the Met Office, was quoted by BBC saying, "The high temperatures are going to continue through a large part of this week. Many areas will continue to reach heatwave thresholds but the amber extreme heat warning focuses on western areas where the most unusually high temperatures are likely to persist". Meanwhile, in a new revelation, climate scientists have said that no place is safe from the kind of extreme heat events that have hit the western US and Canada in recent days. Also read | No place is safe, reveal scientists amid unprecedented heatwave in parts of US and Canada Being deemed as a 'heat dome', it has caused temperatures to rise to almost 50C in Canada and has been linked to hundreds of deaths, melted power lines, buckled roads and wildfires. At least 300 sudden deaths have been reported in Canada, as the country recorded its highest ever temperature amid scorching conditions that extended to the US Pacific Northwest. Sir David King, the former UK chief scientific adviser, was quoted by the Guardian saying, "Nowhere is safe … who would have predicted a temperature of 48/49C in British Columbia? He added, "The risks have been understood and known for so long and we have not acted, now we have a very narrow timeline for us to manage the problem".

Amid record temperatures being inducted across the world, the extreme effects of such radical temperatures are being especially felt in North America and Europe. Now, officials have recovered bodies of migrants who lost their lives to the heat in Arizona's borderlands.

Record temperatures and tricky terrain may have caused the deaths. The Guardian reported that a surge in migrant deaths was also recorded in Texas. Rescue operations have picked up through the border with Mexico.

According to the non-profit group called Humane Borders, 43 sets of human remains have been found in the state's border region. These remains were recovered in just the last month, which was the hottest June ever for the region.

Humane Borders tracks bodies found in Arizona using data from Pima county's medical examiner office.

A mapping coordinator for Humane Borders - Mike Kreyche told The Guardian that not all of those bodies were of people who died in June. Out of the 43, 16 had been dead for just a day, while other 13 had been dead for a week before being found.

The data also signals that all the bodies were of migrants and are much higher in number than eported by the Border Patrol.

Kreyche also noted the increase in dead bodies recovered this years as compared to previous years. 127 sets of remains were found during the first half of 2021, as opposed to 96 bodies that were recovered during the same period last year.

The most common cause of death, as listed by officials is "exposure". According to records, the six-month toll this year is higher than of 2017 wherein 123 sets of remains were found along Arizona's border with Mexico.

According to Texas officials, a surge has been noted in migrant deaths this year. Just last month, Brooks County Sheriff's Department in southern Texas reported 36 migrant deaths in the first five months of 2021, which was higher than all of last year.

Officials have warned of increased dangers this year owing to rising temperatures this summer. Most migrants cross through Texas. But due to strict regulations there, many have been compelled to cross through Arizona, where there is no food or water available.

Remains of 43 people killed by heatwave found along US-Mexico border in Arizona: Report

In a rare event, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has had to apologise for major blackouts in the country’s major cities such as Tehran.

"We regret the problems the people have had in the past few days," Rouhani said in a televised address. "On the one hand, our output has dropped due to the condition of hydroelectric power plants, and on the other consumption has gone up."

In a meeting focused on these power cuts specifically, Rouhani claimed that the power cuts have been a result of unbearable heat and the drought-like situation in the country.

His statement has come a week after Iran’s all major cities, including Tehran, started experience frequent and long power cuts. After several complaints to authorities and on social media, officials warned locals that the situation might continue till the end of July.

In addition to the excessive heat, Rouhani blamed the increased "industrial growth" and the crypto mining process for the frequent power outages. While crypto mining has been officially banned in the country since May, local media has reported the existence of a few "illegal farms" in the country.

Rouhani’s statement has come a little after he declared that Iran was facing an "unprecedented drought" as the average rainfall fell down by 52 per cent compared to the previous year. This brought the hydroelectric power generation to "almost" zero.

While Rouhani explained the situation to the locals, he instructed the energy minister to prevent any cuts outside of the scheduled blackouts of at least two hours a day. "The result is having no capital, and then big projects cannot be done," he told the cabinet. "Who would want to invest when the country's risk goes up?"

However, local media has reported that even though a schedule has been issued for power cuts, many have still faced unscheduled blackouts.
