An "AC blast" means a fire or an explosion in an air conditioning (AC) unit. This can happen because of different reasons like electrical or mechanical failures, as per the officials.&nbsp;Here's what you can do to keep your air-conditioning safe.&nbsp;

Regularly change air filters&nbsp;

A clogged filter stops airflow because of which the AC has to work harder and it overheats. Hence, it is advisable to regularly change it.

Keep outdoor unit clean

Twigs, leaves and other kinds of dirt can block the condenser coils and decrease efficiency while increasing the chances of overheating. Hence, the outdoor unit should be kept clean.

Ensure proper airflow

Keep the area around the outdoor unit clean and ensure proper airflow in the unit by not placing anything at least in the two feet area around it.

Do not use an extension cord

Dedicated circuits are required in the AC units and hence, an extension cord can overload the circuit and eventually lead to overheating.

Timely maintenance

The air-conditioners should have regular maintenance by a qualified technician who can check wiring and loose connections, if any.

Beware of unusual signs in AC

Any odours or unusual noises can be a sign of some major issue in the AC unit and hence, one must notice such signals and take required action.

Last year's scorching temperatures not only shattered modern records but also etched a new chapter in Earth's climate history, according to a recent study published in Nature. The research unveiled in the journal said that 2023 witnessed the most blistering summer in the Northern Hemisphere in the past 2,000 years. This new revelation is now highlighting the magnitude of global warming.

Co-authored by Professor Jan Esper from Johannes Gutenberg University in Germany, the study looked into meteorological archives stretching back to the mid-1800s and scrutinised tree ring data from nine locations across the Northern Hemisphere.

Their findings revealed a staggering reality - the summer of 2023 surpassed all previous benchmarks, with temperatures soaring 2.07 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Professor Esper said, "When you look at the long sweep of history, you can see just how dramatic recent global warming is."

<h2>Re-calibrating baseline&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

The research challenged conventional baselines by recalibrating temperature data against a broader historical context. By leveraging tree ring chronologies, which offer a detailed glimpse into past climate conditions, scientists could extend their analysis beyond the confines of modern instrumental records that only go back as far as 1850.&nbsp;

"Many of the conversations we have around global warming are tied to a baseline temperature from the mid-19th century, but why is this the baseline?" questioned co-author Professor Ulf Büntgen from Cambridge's Department of Geography.

"Only when we look at climate reconstructions can we better account for natural variability and put recent anthropogenic climate change into context."

While historical cooling periods such as&nbsp;Little Antique Ice Age in the 6th century and the Little Ice Age in the early 19th century often followed volcanic eruptions, recent temperature surges have been exacerbated by the intensification of El Nino events. This has lead to more frequent and severe heatwaves.

Year 2023 marked as hottest summer in two millennia, reveals study

Hong Kong experienced its warmest April on record last month, with an average day temperature of 26.4 degrees Celsius, according to the city's weather observatory. This marks the highest temperature recorded for April in the 140 years since meteorological records began&nbsp;in 1884.

"Summer is not yet here but April was already record-breakingly hot," the observatory announced on social media.

Observatory data revealed&nbsp;that Hong Kong, a subtropical Chinese city, has been grappling with increasingly extreme heat in recent years, witnessing many&nbsp;high-temperature records, both daily and monthly, since 2019.

On April 27, the city set new daily temperature records for April, with the highest daily maximum reaching 28.8 degrees Celsius and the highest daily low at 27.7 degrees Celsius. This is a significant departure from the average daily temperature range of 21.1 to 25.6 degrees Celsius observed between 1991 and 2020.

The unusually warm April followed an exceptionally warm winter from December to February and a much warmer than usual March. The observatory forecasts above-normal temperatures throughout 2024.

In response to the rising temperatures, Hong Kong's labour department updated its heat stress warning system, now linked to the observatory's hot weather alerts. It has also doubled the minimum duration of a heat advisory from 30 minutes to one hour, mandating rest periods or work suspension based on temperature levels and job types.

Despite reports of fatalities due to heatstroke at work, Hong Kong has not classified heatstroke as a work-related injury in its laws. The labour department introduced its heat stress warning system last year; however, critics argue that its warning thresholds are too high and lack legal accountability for non-compliant employers.

Record-breaking heatwave: Hong Kong experiences hottest April in 140 years

In recent weeks, Thailand has been dealing with&nbsp;sweltering conditions as temperatures soar&nbsp;across the region. Experts attribute this trend to climate change, which is causing heatwaves to become more frequent, prolonged, and intense.

In Nakhon Sawan province, located in central Thailand, the absence of rain for months has led villagers in Phayuha Khiri District to resort to a unique ritual to break the drought.

Traditionally known as "Hae Nang Meaw," or the parading of a female cat, villagers have opted to parade&nbsp;Japanese manga cat Doraemon or HelloKitty dolls instead.

These parades involve sparkly dressed participants carrying a tinsel-decked cage containing the stuffed toy through the village, while onlookers sprinkle it with water.

The ritual stems from the belief that cats, known for their aversion to water, have the power to summon rainfall with their meows after being drenched.

Meanwhile, in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, the scorching heat caused railway tracks to buckle. With temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius (105 Fahrenheit), railway workers had to douse the rails with water to bend them back into shape.

The State Railway of Thailand attributed the track warping to the "extreme heat" experienced between Ron Phibun and Khao Chum Thong on April 30. Hour-long dousing with water and ice made the&nbsp;tracks&nbsp;usable again.

<h2>Mitigation efforts&nbsp;</h2>

Deputy state railway governor Jaray Rungthani who spoke to&nbsp;AFP stressed on&nbsp;the need for vigilance as temperatures remained high. He assured that railway station managers would assist passengers and handle the heatwave situation based on forecasts.

The heatwave has not only affected&nbsp;Thailand but&nbsp;extended&nbsp;across the region, from Bangladesh to the Philippines.

This exceptional warmth is partly attributed to the El Niño phenomenon and underscores the accelerated warming trend in Asia compared to the global average, as highlighted by the UN's World Meteorological Organisation.

Amid a scorching heatwave in the Philippines, a zoo is providing tigers with frozen treats made&nbsp;from animal blood and is restricting lion mating during the hottest hours of the day. Manila has experienced record-high temperatures, compelling&nbsp;schools nationwide to suspend in-person classes. As residents seek refuge in air-conditioned malls and pools, animals at Manila Zoo are also seeking relief from the extreme heat.

Ensuring the prevention of heatstroke, especially among the large cats, was the primary concern, according to zoo veterinarian Dave Vinas in an interview with AFP on Tuesday, as temperatures soared to 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in the city.

To reduce temperatures inside the concrete enclosures, water is continuously splashed on the walls and ground throughout the day.

Frozen treats, dubbed "bloodsicles," consisting of frozen ground beef or chicken mixed with animal blood and vitamins, are provided for the big cats to lick.

<h2>El Nino weather phenomenon</h2>

The El Niño weather pattern is being attributed to the intense heat and extreme weather conditions in the region.

During the typical high-temperature months of March, April, and May, the archipelago saw the heat index reach the "danger" level of 42°C (108°F).

State meteorologists anticipated even higher temperatures in at least 30 cities and municipalities on Wednesday.

Europe endured a record number of “extreme heat stress” days in 2023. Heat-trapping pollutants helped push temperatures in Europe to one of the highest levels ever recorded. EU’s Earth-watching service Copernicus & the World Meteorological Organisation revealed the information.

More Europeans dying from extreme heat than they did two decades ago

Europe, as per a recent report, is increasingly facing bouts of heat so intense that the human body is unable to cope, and subsequently, deaths related to heat have increased by 30 per cent in the last 20 years.

On Monday (Apr 22), the EU's Copernicus climate monitoring service and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that extreme heat poses particular health risks to outdoor workers, the elderly, and people with existing conditions like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

<h2>Last year's extreme heatwave</h2>

In its report, Copernicus and WMO noted that in 2023, heatwaves pushed almost half — 41 per cent — of Southern Europe into strong, very strong or extreme heat stress. This, AFP reports, was the biggest area of Europe under such conditions in any day on record.

Last year, as far as the records go, was the hottest year globally, and Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent.

In July 2023, parts of Italy recorded a seven per cent increase in deaths. The victims included a 44-year-old man who, while painting road markings in the northern town of Lodi, collapsed and died.

<h2>'Feels like' temperature</h2>

Last year, parts of Spain, France, Italy, and Greece experienced up to ten days of extreme heat stress. This, as per AFP, is defined as "feels like" temperature of more than 46 degrees Celsius, at which point immediate action must be taken to avoid heat stroke and other health issues.

As per researchers, the extreme heat was majorly fuelled by greenhouse gas emissions, the El Niño weather pattern also played a role.

Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said, "Some of the events of 2023 took the scientific community by surprise because of their intensity, their speed of onset, extent, and duration".

Climate change-related temperature rise in India poses substantial health hazards to pregnant women, including preterm birth, gestational hypertension, and pre-eclampsia, according to a new government-backed study. Watch to know more.

India: Rising heat poses health threats

Two days after the national capital Delhi recorded its warmest day of the season, several cities in central India are also experiencing severe heat, with the maximum temperature reaching 41°C on (Thursday) March 28, 2024, according to the India Meteorological Department.

India suffers heatwaves that break human survivability limit

South Sudan has long been hit by climate change-exacerbated disasters like recurring droughts and floods. Now, extreme heat is forcing the world’s youngest nation to close its schools. The authorities have ordered schools across the country shuttered because of a wave of excessive heat that is expected to last at least two weeks. Temperatures are forecast to reach 113 degrees Fahrenheit, far above the 90-degree highs typically experienced in the dry season from December to March.

Every major global climate record was broken last year, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Tuesday, with its chief voicing particular concern about ocean heat and shrinking sea ice. Watch in for more details!

UN sounds ‘Red Alert’ as world smashes heat records in 2023

European scientists last month, declared that the world had experienced its hottest January on record. And now, February is on course to become the hottest on record as well. This comes as scientists warn that the planet is heating up at an accelerating pace.

Planet warming at an accelerating rate

Scientists have revealed that in some exotic states of matter, heat can behave like sound and bounce back and forth. The phenomenon is not new and is known as “second sound.” But the scientists at MIT have for the first time captured the images of the ‘second sound’.

The images show how heat can move like sound waves when generated within a superfluid, a state of matter where atoms flow without any friction. The physicists found that heat and matter can “slosh” against each other, creating oscillations similar to sound waves.

Richard Fletcher, an assistant professor of physics at MIT and a study co-author, was quoted as saying in media reports, “It’s as if you had a tank of water and made one half nearly boiling.”

“If you then watched, the water itself might look totally calm, but suddenly the other side is hot, and then the other side is hot, and the heat goes back and forth, while the water looks still,” he added.

<h2>Significance</h2>

The study, published in Science, can help physicists ascertain how heat behaves in superfluids and other related materials, such as superconductors and neutron stars.

“There are strong connections between our puff of gas, which is a million times thinner than air, and the behaviour of electrons in high-temperature superconductors, and even neutrons in ultradense neutron stars,” says Martin Zwierlein, the Thomas A Frank, Professor of Physics at MIT and the leader of the research team.

The scientists used a cluster of lithium-6 atoms, fermions that typically repel each other. By chilling the atoms close to absolute zero and implementing a magnetic field, they prompted the atoms to pair up and generate a superfluid.

Cyclone Michaung&nbsp;is right in the spotlight as it barrels through Southern Indian states, prompting&nbsp;large-scale rescue operations in cities now inundated.&nbsp;This&nbsp;adds to the alarming tally of climate catastrophes this year in India.&nbsp;

The country saw an intense onslaught of extreme weather events in the first nine months of this year, impacting a staggering 86 per cent&nbsp;of days, as detailed in a <a href="file:///C:/Users/sneha.swaminathan/Downloads/http___cdn.cseindia.org_attachments_0.44877000_1701166658_extreme-weather-events-2023%20(2).pdf">report by the Centre for Science and Environment</a> (CSE).&nbsp;The aftermath was severe, with 2,923 lives lost, nearly two million hectares of crops wiped out, 80,000 homes destroyed, and over 92,000 animals perished.&nbsp;

Unveiling what's termed the 'new normal,' the CSE's report, named "India 2023: An Assessment of Extreme Weather Events," sheds light on a transformative shift in the country's climate landscape.

In a global context, research points to a surge in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events worldwide, primarily linked to climate change driven by the burning of fossil fuels.

Despite the 2015 Paris Agreement's call to limit the average temperature rise to well below 2°C, preferably 1.5°C, current reports hint at a significant departure. This necessitates significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to counteract global warming.

The CSE's report delves into regional disparities within India. Madhya Pradesh topped the charts in recording extreme weather events, while Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh witnessed the highest human casualties. Punjab witnessed the highest animal deaths, and Himachal Pradesh reported maximum damage to homes. Down south, Kerala faced the brunt with the highest count of extreme weather days and deaths, while Telangana encountered substantial agricultural losses.

Analysing month by month, the CSE's scrutiny brought to the fore notable temperature anomalies.

January was slightly warmer than average, and February shattered records as the warmest in 122 years.

India experienced its driest August and the sixth driest February in over a century. Lightning and storms dominated, claiming lives, predominantly in Bihar.

However, the most substantial devastation resulted from heavy rains, floods, and landslides, causing over 1,900 casualties.

"This worrying trend is mainly due to global warming and climate change. The increasing heat is causing more droughts, affecting our water supply and food. Also, our oceans are getting warmer, which leads to stronger cyclones with more rain. These heatwaves are not just uncomfortable; they're dangerous, especially for our elderly and children. India, with its long coastline, will face more cyclones, and our inland areas will suffer from more heatwaves. This is a big problem that needs immediate action," Shivang Agarwal, PhD scholar specialising in climate change at Johns Hopkins University, told WION.&nbsp;

"The country's future outlook hinges on both national and international efforts to address these challenges, emphasising the need for robust resilience systems and international cooperation in climate finance and policy reform," he adds.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

It is important to note that India, in the past ten years has significantly committed resources to enhance its capabilities in predicting storms. These initiatives allow for prompt evaluations of cyclone formation and characteristics, enabling the timely dissemination of warnings to both the government and the public, says Nimish Singh, Associate Fellow at The Energy Research Institute (TERI), New Delhi.

"Establishing a similar early warning system for other extreme events is imperative, and sharing this information with the public will strengthen India's resilience infrastructure. Furthermore, providing incentives such as monetary risk coverage for farmers and start-up entrepreneurs can mitigate the compounded effects of these calamities on the general public," he adds.&nbsp;

<h2>2023 on track to be the hottest year on record</h2>

With just a month left in the year, 2023 is hurtling towards a global warming milestone, set to surpass 1.4 degrees Celsius (2.5 Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels, creating what the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) describes as a "deafening cacophony" of shattered climate records.

The WMO's early assessment in the provisional State of the Global Climate report leaves no room for doubt – 2023 is destined to become the hottest year on record, surpassing the previous 2016 benchmark when the world was roughly 1.2°C warmer than the preindustrial average.

This revelation intensifies the sense of urgency gripping world leaders grappling with the monumental task of phasing out fossil fuels, a central theme at the United Nations' annual climate summit COP28 being held&nbsp;in Dubai. As COP28 unfolds, the world watches eagerly, awaiting the outcomes and anticipating the climate agenda it will set for the pivotal year of 2024.

The significance of COP28 lies not just in the immediate decisions it may produce but in the trajectory it sets for the collective climate efforts moving forward.

Will it set a climate agenda for 2024 with no room for complacency? All we know is that the climate agenda for 2024 cannot be something about which we can be lax.

Brazil sees all-time temperature record, climate change partly to blame

New data suggests that 2023 is on track to become the "virtually certain" warmest year on record, marked&nbsp;by deadly heatwaves, floods, and fires. This prediction follows a series of exceptional high temperatures throughout the year, reported the BBC.

In October, global average temperatures reached a significant level, exceeding the previous record set in October 2019 by 0.4 degrees Celsius.

These high&nbsp;temperatures were driven by both carbon emissions and the influence of the El Niño weather phenomenon, marking the fifth consecutive month of record warmth.

As 2023 progresses, there is a worrisome trend of extreme global temperatures, which is expected to continue into 2024.

This year has already witnessed an increase in days surpassing the politically significant 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/study-reveals-22bn-people-in-india-pak-to-face-deadly-heat-if-global-temperatures-rise-by-2-degrees-celsius-644880">Also read |&nbsp;India, Pak, China to face heat-induced health issues due to rising temperatures by end of century</a>

<h2>What does it mean for climate and humanity?</h2>

The record-breaking heat is primarily attributed to ongoing carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels.

In addition, the influence of the El Niño event, which releases extra heat into the atmosphere, has further intensified the rise in temperatures.

This particular El Niño has exhibited unusual characteristics and is contributing to the rapid temperature increase.

New data suggests that 2023 is on track to become the "virtually certain" warmest year on record, marked by deadly heatwaves, floods, and fires. This prediction follows a series of exceptional high temperatures throughout the year, reported the BBC. In October, global average temperatures reached a significant level, exceeding the previous record set in October 2019 by 0.4 degrees Celsius. These high temperatures were driven by both carbon emissions and the influence of the El Niño weather phenomenon, marking the fifth consecutive month of record warmth. As 2023 progresses, there is a worrisome trend of extreme global temperatures, which is expected to continue into 2024. This year has already witnessed an increase in days surpassing the politically significant 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold. Also read | India, Pak, China to face heat-induced health issues due to rising temperatures by end of century What does it mean for climate and humanity? The record-breaking heat is primarily attributed to ongoing carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels. In addition, the influence of the El Niño event, which releases extra heat into the atmosphere, has further intensified the rise in temperatures. This particular El Niño has exhibited unusual characteristics and is contributing to the rapid temperature increase. As India grapples with the sweltering heat of its summers, a less visible but equally menacing threat looms in the air: surface ozone pollution. While the nation's bustling cities and industries have been associated with the haze of particulate matter, ground-level ozone has been silently making its presence felt.

India, unfortunately, is home to numerous highly polluted cities in the world. While particulate matter often dominates headlines, the menace of ozone pollution has been lurking in the shadows.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) Air Quality Index, ozone levels in parts of Delhi and other metropolitan cities is on a rising trend. Recent data shows ozone levels spiking to hazardous levels in major metros as temperatures climb.

Yet national air quality standards and plans remain heavily focussed on particulate matter (PM2.5) alone. The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), which was launched by the government in 2019, India's primary initiative against air pollution, has been predominantly targeting PM2.5 particles.

These minuscule particles, less than 2.5 micrometres&nbsp;in diameter, can infiltrate our lungs, posing grave health risks. However, our preoccupation with particulates might be overshadowing other equally pressing threats.

R Suresh, Area Convener in The Energy and Resources Institute explained unlike other pollutants, ozone is not directly emitted from any source. It forms when nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) react in the presence of sunlight and high temperatures.

This reaction is influenced by the relative concentrations of VOCs and NOx, creating what scientists refer to as "ozone isopleths." Vehicle exhaust, fossil fuel combustion, gasoline vapours, chemical solvents and natural sources release NOx and VOCs into the air - the essential ingredients for ozone formation.

At optimum temperatures and ultraviolet radiation intensity, these hydrocarbons undergo complex photochemical reactions to form ozone pollution that builds up strongly during the day but can persist late into the night. Of particular concern are NOx emissions from transportation - diesel and petrol vehicles are the largest source of ozone-forming NOx across urban India. As NOx emissions have not fallen in proportion to PM2.5, ozone levels keep creeping upwards every summer.

He gave an example that, China offers a cautionary tale in this regard. Vigorous emission controls reduced PM2.5 concentrations significantly. However, this led to a surge in ozone levels. Data from 2017 to 2019 in China's Northern Central Plains indicates a 15 per cent decrease in PM2.5, potentially driving the continued anthropogenic increase in ozone, coupled with unmitigated VOC emissions. This scenario mirrors the current trajectory in India, emphasising the need for a holistic approach to air quality management.

Ozone can wreak havoc once inhaled into the lungs. According to the WHO's Regional Office for Europe, ozone causes breathing problems, asthma attacks, lung inflammation, coughing, chest pain and throat irritation. It reduces lung function and harms the respiratory system.

Numerous studies conducted globally over decades have linked both short and long-term ozone exposure to increased hospitalisations and premature deaths from respiratory and cardiovascular causes.

Ozone likely even weakens the immune system and increases susceptibility to respiratory infections - a grave concern in the post-COVID era. A study done by scientists from University of Leeds, UK, says that by 2050, projections suggest that 1.6 million deaths in India could be attributed to ozone pollution.

But the ramifications of ozone pollution extend beyond human health. Ozone can damage crops, reducing yields and affecting food security. Ozone also cripples crop yields and harms food security. As this pollutant enters leaves through pores called stomata,&nbsp;it damages plant tissues, accelerates ageing, slows photosynthesis, stunts growth and eventually slashes crop yields. A study published in the American Geophysical Union’s Journal highlighted that the present-day ozone-induced damage to wheat and rice in India is sufficient to feed roughly 35 per cent of the nation's poor.

Models suggest wheat production losses of 26-35 million metric tonnes globally due to ozone pollution. Studies conducted locally at Indian Agriculture Research Institute and other institutes show ozone exposure during peak crop growth results in 10-15 per cent&nbsp;yield loss for grains like rice, wheat and soybean across parts of India.

With extreme heat, erratic rainfall and other climate change effects already shrinking farm incomes, unchecked ozone pollution poses a significant risk to India's agriculture sector and self-sufficiency goals.

Ozone isn't just toxic to humans and plants - it degrades materials as well. As a strong oxidising agent, ozone accelerates corrosion of metals, degrades polymers and erodes building materials over time. Studies estimate it causes between 3-5 per cent&nbsp;additional economic losses due to reduced service life of rubber, textiles, dyes and paints. India's prized monuments like the Taj Mahal face enhanced degradation from rising ozone pollution in urban centres&nbsp;like Agra. The economic toll from ozone's infrastructure damage will only rise over time if left unaddressed.

Addressing this multifaceted challenge requires a comprehensive strategy. Transitioning to electric vehicles can significantly curtail NOx emissions. Promoting public transportation, carpooling, and implementing stricter emission norms can further help. But it's not just about reactive measures. Proactive monitoring, understanding the interplay of different pollutants, and public awareness campaigns are equally crucial. While PM2.5 has been the poster child of India's air pollution narrative, it's time to broaden the discourse. A myriad of pollutants, each with its unique challenges and health implications, contribute to the air we breathe. Our goal should be unequivocal: safeguard public health. Achieving this necessitates a comprehensive approach to air quality management.

The urgency to address ozone pollution in India is palpable. With awareness, collective responsibility, and actionable strategies, we can pave the way for cleaner air. It's not merely an environmental concern; it's about our health, our future, and the legacy we leave for subsequent generations. As India strides forward, ensuring that every breath we take is a step towards a brighter, healthier future should be paramount.
