Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel wants more consistency from his side after an up and down start to the season and has called on his players to replicate their opening 4-0 league win at Werder Bremen when they face Augsburg on Sunday.

The Bavarians, who won an 11th straight league title when Borussia Dortmund slipped up on the final matchday, kicked off the domestic season with a 3-0 German Super Cup loss at home to RB Leipzig. They followed that up with an emphatic league victory over Werder on Friday and Tuchel wants more of the same.

"We have to accept criticism and to keep working on the things that we had the impression we were already further ahead," Tuchel said this week of their topsy-turvy start. "We want to reduce the number of ups and downs we have during the match and between matches."

"Those (two matches) were an example of how extremely different we can play between Saturday and Friday and we hope, in the positive sense, to bring in stability and reduce that amplitude," added Tuchel.

The arrival of Harry Kane, who scored one goal and set up another on his Bundesliga debut against Werder, has boosted Bayern's hopes of a potential Champions League-winning attack this season.

Bayern Munich's Thomas Tuchel wants players to get consistent following topsy-turvy start to season

Bayern Munich's record signing Harry Kane scored once and set up another goal on his Bundesliga debut to steer the champions to a 4-0 victory at Werder Bremen on Friday and a winning start to their league season.

England captain Kane, who joined for a league record 100 million euros ($108.68 million) last week to solve Bayern's scoring problems, slotted their second goal in the 74th minute after setting up Leroy Sane for a fourth-minute opener.

Sane added another in the 90th minute with an easy tap-in and Mathys Tel made it 4-0 in stoppage time.

"It was a good evening," Kane told reporters. "It was a tough game but we started well with the early goal. They made it hard for us in the second half but then I scored the second goal and the lads from the bench did the rest."

"I was a bit nervous and excited. Even though it was not my first match for Bayern I was nervous before the game," Kane said. "I had butterflies in my stomach."

Bayern had suffered a surprise 3-0 home loss to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup last week with Kane making a second half substitute appearance following his move from Tottenham Hotspur.

But they were in no mood for adventures on Friday and quickly went in front when Kane sent Sane clear to beat goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka.

Despite having boxed Werder completely into their own half for much of the first 45 minutes Bayern could not add another with Kane marked well and the visitors trying their luck mainly with long-range efforts.

Werder attempted to catch Bayern off guard straight after the restart and carved out three consecutive chances in the first four minutes of the second half.

The visitors, however, heeded the wake-up call and quickly recovered, responding with Kingsley Coman curling a shot onto the post in the 59th and Kane forcing a good save from Pavlenka two minutes later.

Bayern, who won their 11th straight league crown last season after Borussia Dortmund slipped up on the final matchday, sealed the three points when Kane drilled in their second goal.

It was exactly for such scoring prowess that Bayern brought Kane to Munich, with the Bavarians having struggled for goals since last year's departure of Robert Lewandowski.

With Werder having run out of steam Sane scored his second of the evening after combining with Thomas Mueller in the box and substitute Tel fired in their fourth to wrap up the win.

'Nervous & excited' Harry Kane fires on Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich, helps his side make winning start

England captain Harry Kane left boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur after 19 years to join European powerhouse Bayern Munich in search of titles, the Bundesliga's record signing said on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Kane, who joined on a four-year deal on Saturday for a reported 100 million euros ($109.44 million) plus add-ons, made his debut only hours later as a second-half substitute in Bayern's 3-0 loss to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup.

Despite a stellar scoring record he has failed to win any domestic or international titles with Spurs.

"In my career I wanted to keep improving, pushing myself and see how far that can take me," Kane said in a press conference. "I wanted to play internationally, in the Champions League, and fight for titles every year. Coming to Bayern gives me that opportunity. I am looking forward to that challenge."

The striker, who has spent the majority of his career at Tottenham after joining at 11, has scored a club-record 280 goals in more than 430 appearances in all competitions and 58 times for his country in 84 games, making him England's all-time record marksman.

He is also the second-highest Premier League scorer of all time with 213 goals, 47 behind Alan Shearer, but titles with club and country have so far eluded him.

Bayern had been in search of an out-and-out striker after struggling since the departure of Robert Lewandowski last year.

The Bavarians last won the Champions League in 2020, the most recent of their six European Cups. They have also won the last 11 Bundesliga titles in a row.

"I was at Tottenham for 19 years of my life. Ultimately I am a professional and I always pushed myself to the limit," Kane said. "I needed to be playing in the Champions League, trying to win titles every year. When I thought about it, it was a decision I wanted to make."

Tottenham failed to qualify for international football this season.

Kane, however, missed out on the first title of the season on his Bayern debut, coming on just after the hour but managing only three touches in the loss to Leipzig.

"It was amazing to see the reception I got," he said. "Ultimately of course I wanted to come here and win last night but it was not the case.

"No time to panic, it's a long season ahead," Kane said. "We want to win the title, win the Cup and try to win the Champions League as well."

I wanted to fight for titles every year, coming to Bayern gives me that opportunity: Harry Kane

Dani Olmo scored a hat-trick to guide RB Leipzig to a 3-0 victory in the German Super Cup over champions Bayern Munich on Saturday, spoiling record signing Harry Kane's debut for the Bavarians. England captain Kane had signed a four-year deal amid a media frenzy only hours earlier and came off the bench in the second half but could not prevent a season-opening defeat against the German Cup winners.

The hosts' performance left coach Thomas Tuchel fuming, saying it was as if the team had done no work in their four-week pre-season. "It is a big problem because it feels as if we had done nothing in the past four weeks," Tuchel said. "I cannot explain it. It was just not enough in every department. I have just no idea why. There is no relation between our form and attitude going into the game and our performance on the pitch. "It is not good. It is the worse thing because there is such a big discrepancy," Tuchel said.

Spaniard Olmo pounced on Bayern's sloppy defending in the third minute to slot in for the lead and he added another with a superb flick and turn that left two defenders standing a minute before the break. Leipzig's Mohamed Simakan had almost gifted Bayern an equaliser a little earlier, hitting the post in his effort to clear the ball.

With Bayern wasteful up front, as was the case for much of last season, and squandering half a dozen chances, Tuchel brought on Kane, whose transfer cost a reported Bundesliga record 100 million euros, in the 64th minute to huge cheers from Bayern fans.

He hardly got a look-in, however, with only three touches and it was Olmo who scored again, this time with a penalty only four minutes later, to secure the first title of the season for his team. "It was amazing night. We worked a lot over 90 minutes, also with possession," Olmo said. "I think it was a perfect game.

"We expected to win, we wanted to lift this trophy and there is no better way to start the season," he said. "We want to be up there. We have a competitive team."

Bayern, who kick off their Bundesliga season on Friday against Werder Bremen, will be hoping the addition of Kane will dramatically improve their conversion rate in attack this season, a problem they have been struggling with since the departure of Robert Lewandowski last year.

Kane’s emotional note

"I'm sad to be leaving the club I've spent nearly 20 years of my life at, from an 11-year-old boy to a 30-year-old man. There have been so many great moments and special memories that I will cherish forever.

"And mostly thank you to you the Tottenham fans. From the moment I've been playing I've been one of your own and I've given everything I possibly could to make you proud and give you as many special moments and memories that will hopefully last forever,” Kane wrote after his move to Germany.

The England captain was at the center of a transfer saga since the window opened in June with Bayern making three bids for the forward. Kane was in favour of the move but Spurs rejected all the approaches from the German club, before finally accepting the big offer of $100 million on Thursday.

"I'm very happy to be part of Bayern, one of the biggest clubs in the world and I've always said that I want to move and prove myself at the highest level in my career", said Kane on his arrival at the Allianz Arena.

"This club is defined by its winning mentality - it feels very good to be here."

After Spurs and Bayern signed a deal on Thursday, Kane was supposed to fly to Germany for the medical. Although there was a delay, the English captain and his camp finally managed to get on the flight to Munich, where he completed his transfer from Spurs to Bayern.

Harry Kane departs as Tottenham’s top goal-scorer across all competitions, with 280 goals in 435 appearances, and is also England’s top scorer with 58 goals to his name. Having made his debut in December 2011, Kane failed to win any trophy with the London-based club at domestic level and international for England.

With this, he also ends up as the player with most goals (213) in Premier League without winning a trophy.

For Bayern, this move is a winner as they finished their search of an outright striker in Kane. Following Bayern Lewandowski’s transfer to FC Barcelona the previous season, Bayern didn’t have a proper number 9.

Now, with Kane accepting personal terms, he will fill that void and begin his new journey in Germany in quest of domestic league title and the coveted Champions League.

Bayern Munich complete Harry Kane transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, England captain joins on four-year deal

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has insisted that he is ready to move on from the Harry Kane transfer saga after the club agreed a $100 million deal with Bayern Munich on Thursday, August 10. The Spurs manager though is not looking back at the picture and is insisting his team move on as they prepare for the new Premier League season. It is reported that Harry will land in Munich on Friday for medicals before he puts pen to paper for the proposed deal.

Ready for Post-Kane life

“I don’t have a blow by blow account of the whole thing but I understand it has progressed to where it will happen. That’s all the information I have at the moment. It looks like we’ll move forward without Harry,” Postecoglou said in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“I don’t have feelings either way about needing anything. From my perspective it’s about understanding where were are at. I understand the deal is imminent.”

The move will see the end of an era at Spurs as Harry leaves with the legendary status of being the club’s top scorer. He is also the second-top scorer in the history of the Premier League with only Alan Shearer scoring more goals than the England captain.

“We’ve been planning for this, it’s fair to say, for a while. It doesn’t take too much investigative work to realise this was going to happen. A lot of our business so far has been with this in mind. It doesn’t change my plans dramatically.”

What next?

Spurs will now look to bolster their ranks quickly as they focus on the transfer market with three weeks to go. It will be hard for Spurs to find a striker of Kane’s quality as he ended up scoring 30 Premier League goals despite them finishing eighth. While no particular name is in the running to replace Kane, Spurs will be expected to go with a wait-and-watch stance to avoid spending wrongly.

The North London club will start their season against fellow London rivals Brentford on Sunday, with manager Postecoglou making his official debut.

Following the departure of their Champions League-winning striker Robert Lewandowski the previous season to FC Barcelona, Bayern was in the market seeking a world-class forward.

Having pushed for Kane in their previous failed attempts, Bayern didn’t let the guard down and sent their fourth proposal, which got accepted by Tottenham a day before the upcoming season starts.

Spurs legend on his way out

The 30-year-old striker still has one year left on his contract, and the ball is now in his court to decide his future. As he was deprived of winning a major trophy at Spurs – who last won in 2008, Kane’s move to Bayern could end his wait for a League title despite being a prolific goal-scorer throughout.

As first reported by The Athletic, Bayern is ready to push the limit for the English captain (over 100 million euros) by crossing their previous most-expensive transfer worth 80 million euros for defender Lucas Hernandez, whom they bought in 2019 and now has joined Paris Saint-Germain for 45 million euros this summer.

Tottenham Harry Kane signs four-year deal with Bayern Munich, set to fly to Germany on Friday for medical

The Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur have declined Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich's 'final bid' to acquire star striker Harry Kane. For over a month, the transfer talks attracted quite a lot of eyeballs. It was reported that the English club is in favour to sign a young recruit in place of the England captain, however, they have now turned down the latest offer.

The German champions submitted their final offer for Kane for a record-breaking bid which was more than $100 million ($110m). Bayern wanted to finish off the deal by last week and, hence, the offer was followed by a deadline; i.e. August 4 (Friday). However, the German club have failed in their third unsuccessful bid for the star striker.

Bayern have been after Tottenham to attain the services of Kane. However, they have not managed to succeed so far. The club had implied that if they fail in their attempt this time, they would shift their focus to other potential transfers. With over three weeks remaining in the transfer window, uncertainly still prevails over their plan of action in this course.

According to a report, Bayern are now set to conduct a meeting - which was pre-arranged - on Monday to discuss their next move. So far, Bayern and Tottenham have certainly not reached any consensus regarding Kane.

Kane, a veteran of Tottenham with 280 goals in 435 appearances across all competitions, continued to perform his duties for the club amid the transfer talks. On Sunday (August 06), the 30-year-old led the team in the 2023/24 PL pre-season face-off versus Shakhtar Donetsk. In the club friendlies, Tottenham demolished Shakhtar 5-1 with the superstar striker scoring on four instances (including a penalty shot).

It is to be noted that Kane still has a year left on his contract with Tottenham, with enough signs indicating that he is not open to an extension.

Football transfer: Tottenham Hotspur turn down Bayern Munich's 'final' bid for striker Harry Kane

Record German champions Bayern Munich have issued an ultimatum to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur as they try to finalise the deal for Harry Kane. The England captain is in the final year of his contract with the London side and has been subject to transfer ever since the window opened. It is believed that Bayern are willing to pay above $100 million and submitted their final bid on Friday, August 5 while warning Spurs of no further scope for negotiations in the deal.

Bayern issue ultimatum

According to reliable football journalist, Fabrizio Romano Bayern executives are in London to finalise the deal and have submitted a final offer. They have issued an ultimatum of 24 hours and want an answer from Spurs for the Kane deal. According to reports, it will be the final offer from the defending Bundesliga champions, and will not entertain them any further if the offer is accepted.

Tottenham’s stance on the player until now is clear as they intend to start the season with Kane, who is reportedly in line to take over the captaincy of the club from Hugo Lloris. The French goalkeeper is expected to leave the club soon and will hand over the captaincy to Kane once the deal is confirmed.

The next 24 hours will now be crucial for all the parties including Kane and both the clubs. It is believed that Bayern are willing to pay above $100 million and submitted their final bid on Friday, August 5 while warning Spurs of no further scope for negotiations in the deal. Football Transfers: Bayern Munich issue 24-hour ultimatum to Spurs for Harry Kane deal

The football transfer window is abuzz with action. Recently, a lot has been said and written about Harry Kane's potential transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. It is being said that the English club is interested in releasing Kane, eyeing Bayern's Mathys Tel in exchange.

On Monday (July 31), Bayern Munich's chief executive and technical director left for London to meet with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy about a transfer for Kane, as per Sky Germany. It is to be noted that the clubs were in line to meet last week but the meeting got rescheduled. However, the dialogue has been open between them with regard to the future of England's captain and Spurs' top goal-scorer.

There is a gap in valuation between Bayern and Spurs but Kane is open to speaking formally to the German club only if his current club is satisfied that it is a worthy deal. Meanwhile, the German champions remain convinced that the Englishman is willing to join them.

Apart from Bayern, even the Kylian Mbappe-starrer Paris Saint Germain (PSG) is reportedly interested in signing Kane. However, they will not be drawn into a bidding war. Meanwhile, Kane has never been vocal about leaving the club, where he made his first-ever appearance in 2011. However, he will become a free agent when his Spurs contract expires at the end of next season and is believed to not sign a new deal with them (at least not when the transfer window is open).

Bayern's record transfer is the €80mn ($88mn) they paid Atletico Madrid for Lucas Hernandez four years back. They are keen to break their transfer record to acquire the 30-year-old Kane's services. Meanwhile, the Spurs are looking to swap Kane with Tel, Bayern's 'young Mbappe'.

It goes without saying that Kane has been a legend of the club for years. If he makes a move to the German club, it will be a big development in the ongoing transfer window. It will also mean that the five big English clubs -- such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham -- would have changed their captains this summer. Thus, all eyes on Bayern-Tottenham talks. A final decision is likely to be taken by the end of this week.

Football: 'Totally committed' Kane wants to see a successful Spurs side, says manager Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane might join Bayern Munich this summer or at least this is what Bundesliga club's honorary president Ulli Hoeness thinks. Speaking to the reporters at the team's training camp, Hoeness said that the English striker has already decided to join the German club. The former Bayern president also said that talks regarding his transfer are on with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, reported news agency Associated Press.

"Up to now it was the case that Harry has clearly signalled in all the talks that his mind is made up. And if that remains the case, then we'll get him," Hoeness said. "Then Tottenham will have to give way."

Meanwhile, Tottenham has offered Harry a new contract but the striker is not willing to extend his stay with the English Premier League (EPL) club, reported ESPN, citing sources.

Amid the rumours of his departure, Hoeness said that Bayern's supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen are constantly in touch with the footballer and his agents.

Notably, Kane has only one year left on his contract with Hotspur.

The reason behind Hoeness' confidence is Kane's remaining contract duration with the Hotspur, as he thinks that the EPL club won't be able to decline $90-$100 million for the player. Hoeness also said that Kane wants to play in European conditions.

Bayern won the Bundesliga last season while Tottenham finished eighth in the Premier League.

"Now he has the chance again to come to a top club in Europe," Hoeness said. "What we all like is that he and his agents, his father and the brother, have always clearly stood by what they've said. If it stays like that, then that's OK."

Hoeness, however, agreed that discussions with Tottenham boss Levy are tricky.

"He's clever," Hoeness said. "He isn't naming a price. First of all, we have to bring him so far as to name a price. Of course, he's playing for time. He's savvy and, I find, a super professional, I really like him. But I think these are people who haven't just been doing this since yesterday."

Football transfers: Spurs chairman Daniel Levy negotiates potential Harry Kane deal with Bayern Munich

Ange Postecoglou, the newly-appointed manager of the English Premier League (EPL) club Tottenham Hotspur, hasn't been given 'any assurances' about Harry Kane. The England captain, who is entering his last year of the contract, is on the radar of many foreign clubs. Bayern Munich of German Bundesliga have shown the strongest interest in Kane as per the reports.

Postecoglou, however, wants Kane in his team and hopes that the English skipper wants the same as well.

"I don't think it's my role to sit there and treat people in a manner because of their circumstances. I treat everyone the same.

"Harry is already an important figure in the history of this football club. He's one of the premier players in the world. I want him here and I want to make this club successful. I'm certain he wants that as well," said the Hotspur coach on Monday, July 10 in his first conference since being named the manager.

Postecoglou, however, is keen to speak with Kane when the Spur star reports for preseason training on Wednesday, July 12.

"It's not going to be a conversation where we come out with some kind of understanding," Postecoglou said.

"I just want to introduce myself and I want to know what he wants to happen to make this football club successful then we'll go out there on the training ground and make it happen.

"I haven't had any assurances and I wouldn't expect any. With these type of situations you're never dealing with certainties. I can only go with what I know right now. Harry is part of the squad and looking forward to being back and part of the players."

Amid talk that Kane might be leaving Tottenham, ESPN reported that Kane has been told that he's not available for transfer this summer and the club doesn't plans to offload him either.

Harry is part of the squad and looking forward to being back and part of the players." Amid talk that Kane might be leaving Tottenham, ESPN reported that Kane has been told that he's not available for transfer this summer and the club doesn't plans to offload him either. Football: Ange Postecoglou has no 'assurances' about Harry Kane staying in Tottenham

England Captain Harry Kane is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer. German Champions Bayern Munich are leading the race to sign the star striker and have made a second bid of around $90 million. Is Bayern the right club for Kane, who is yet to win a major trophy in his career.

Bayern submit improved bid for Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur have frequently spoken about the need to tighten up their leaky defence over the last few weeks but striker Harry Kane said it is time to put words into action after they coughed up early goals again on Sunday.

Liverpool were 3-0 up inside 15 minutes at Anfield and while Tottenham pegged the hosts back to 3-3, Diogo Jota's stoppage-time goal earned the Merseyside club a 4-3 victory. Spurs conceded five in the opening 21 minutes of a 6-1 rout at Newcastle United and fell behind after only seven minutes in Thursday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Kane said their performance in the early stages of Sunday's game showed they had not learned their lesson. "It's not the first time it's happened this season. We need to start understanding big games better," he told Sky Sports. "We've shown we can come back into games and to do it here away at Anfield shows what we're capable of but to have the starts we have had are hard to put into words and are unacceptable.

"There's only so many words you can use, the bottom line is you need to go out there and show it isn't that case."

Interim coach Ryan Mason said the players had to be ready from the first whistle. "If you're not ready to start games with full intensity you're going to concede goals and to be 3-0 down after that time is hard," Mason told the BBC.

"The manner in which we concede the last goal makes it impossible to take. I need to speak to the players on that, we need to address it and do it quickly."

Kazakhstan had started their bid to qualify for a first ever major tournament with a home defeat by Slovenia.

But Bakhtiyor Zaynutdinov's 73rd-minute penalty gave the hosts hope of a famous turnaround in Astana.

He was later sent off for a second yellow card but by then had already grabbed all three points.

Euro 2024 Qualifiers round-up: England beat Ukraine, Ronaldo's double powers Portugal

Harry Kane became England's record international goalscorer as his side began their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign by defeating reigning champions Italy 2-1 in Group C on Thursday.

England's skipper struck a penalty past Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma shortly before halftime to make it 2-0 and take his tally to 54, one more than Wayne Rooney.

Midfielder Declan Rice had opened the scoring after 13 minutes as Gareth Southgate's side dominated the first half.

Debutant striker Mateo Retegui halved the deficit in the 56th minute as Italy responded in impressive fashion but England weathered a storm to secure a first win over Italy on Italian soil for 62 years despite having Luke Shaw sent off.

Although there will be a concern at how England lost their way in the second half, it proved the perfect response after the heartache of losing to France in the World Cup quarter-finals in December when Kane missed a crucial penalty.

This time he made no mistake after Giovanni Di Lorenzo was harshly penalised for a handball in the 42nd minute, finding the corner to claim another scoring record.

Kane was also involved in England's opener as his blocked shot fell for Rice to convert to silence the majority of fans inside the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Italy, who beat England on penalties to win Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium but failed to qualify for the World Cup, were far more dangerous in the second half after Argentina-born Retegui smashed a low shot past Jordan Pickford.

England sank deeper and deeper as they appeared to run out of legs but Italy struggled to create clear chances and suffered its first Euro qualifying defeat in 41 games.

It was England's first competitive victory over Italy since 1977 and meant Gareth Southgate has racked up 50 wins as the national coach since taking the job in 2016.

Kane's night

But the night belonged to Kane.

"This means everything," Kane said. "So excited to get back out there and put the England shirt back on. And it had to be a penalty of course. Once it hit the back of the net there was so much emotion. Just huge thanks to the players, staff and fans."

Rooney, whose goals came in 120 games compared with the 81 it has taken Kane to move ahead of him, was quick to congratulate his former international team mate.

"I knew it wouldn't take long but that was quick. Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry!" Rooney said on Twitter.

It was the first time Naples had hosted the Azzurri for a decade but it all went flat for Roberto Mancini's team as they were outplayed in the first half.

Young midfielder Jude Bellingham ran the show in the early stages for England and he forced a superb save from Donnarumma when he let fly with a ferocious shot from distance.

From the resulting corner, the ball fell to Kane and when his shot was blocked by Leonardo Spinazzola it fell kindly for Rice to shoot past Donnarumma.

England looked dangerous every time they crossed the halfway line and Kane flashed a low ball across the face of the goal.

Kalvin Phillips, surprisingly given a start despite hardly any minutes for Manchester City this season, went close with a low show as Kane screamed for a pass.

Kane's history-making moment was a touch harsh on Italy as referee Srdjan Jovanovic decided after checking a monitor that Di Lorenzo had used his arm as a cross came into the box.

Kane dispatched the penalty to put England in cruise control and Jack Grealish missed a glorious chance to make it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime.

Italy were a different proposition after the break and Retegui marked his debut with a clinical finish.

Mancini sent on Wilfrid Gnonto midway through the half and he caused all sorts of problems as Italy piled forward.

Shaw was booked for time wasting and a minute later received another yellow for a mistimed tackle and a flagging England had to dig deep to get over the line.

Although there will be a concern at how England lost their way in the second half, it proved the perfect response after the heartache of losing to France in the World Cup quarter-finals in December when Kane missed a crucial penalty.

Euro 2024 | Harry Kane breaks record as England enjoys rare win over Italy

England skipper Harry Kane will target yet another major milestone in his illustrious career as his side takes on Italy in Naples. Kane, currently on 53 goals for England and is level with Wayne Rooney for the all-time record for most goals for the national side. While the defending champions have a good record on their home turf, Italy’s last competitive home match was against North Macedonia where they lost 0-1 and therefore failed to make the FIFA World Cup 2022. The clash will be the repeat of the Euro 2020 final when Italy beat England on penalties at Wembley.

Kane targets all-time record

Kane, currently on 53 goals for England missed an important penalty in World Cup quarterfinal that condemned his side to exit and also miss out on the record. The Tottenham forward recently became his club’s all-time top scorer and will look to replicate his heroics for the country as well. The match in Naples will be Kane’s 81st for the national side where he is expected to carry the burden of the nation.

England out for revenge

While Kane will have personal milestone on agenda, the Three Lions will be out for revenge, having lost to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final. Luke Shaw who scored early in the match saw his goal cancelled out by Leonardo Bonucci in the second half, before Italy won the contest on a shootout. Roberto Mancini’s side will still be aware of the danger posed by Gareth Southgate’s men as they try to start on a high.

The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples has been a happy place in recent times as parent club Napoli leads the Serie A standing. Napoli, likely to be crowned the champions of Italy have lost only one match at home in Serie A, a recent 0-1 defeat to Lazio. If Italy can replicate Napoli’s form, England could have a tough day at the office on Thursday evening.

Euro 2024 qualifier: Harry Kane targets another milestone as England face Italy in champions backyard

Antonio Conte's reign as Tottenham Hotspur manager is nearing its end. The Italian's contract was due to expire at the end of the season, but his rant against the players and the club following their 3-3 draw against Southampton at the weekend has forced the Tottenham board to expedite the decision about his future. It is believed that a decision is set to be made in the next 48 hours.

WION Sports Extra: Is Antonio Conte's time up at Tottenham hotspur?

Liverpool's resurgence proved short-lived after a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday as Tottenham took advantage in the race for a top-four finish by beating Nottingham Forest 3-1.

Jurgen Klopp's men inflicted a historic 7-0 thrashing on Manchester United last weekend to equal the Red Devils record defeat.

But Liverpool suffered another setback in a frustrating season as Mohamed Salah fired a second half penalty wide.

Philip Billing scored the only goal on 28 minutes as Bournemouth's first home win since November lifted the Cherries out of the bottom three.

"The game was pretty much the opposite of what we wanted to show and to do today. I think we played for pretty much 95 minutes the game Bournemouth wanted to play," said Klopp.

"This game was a massive knock and how it is with knocks, you have to take them, you have to have a look how big the scars are and then you go from there."

Fifth-placed Liverpool are now six points adrift of the Champions League places after Harry Kane ensured a tough week for Spurs ended on a high.

The England captain's future has been a source of speculation after Tottenham crashed out of both the FA Cup and Champions League in the space a week.

Antonio Conte's men had failed to score in their previous three games, but Kane ended that drought by rising highest to head in Pedro Porro's cross.

Kane then coolly slotted home his first penalty since missing a crucial spot-kick in England's World Cup quarter-final exit to France.

Conte named Richarlison in the starting line-up despite the Brazilian's criticism of his coach after exiting Europe to AC Milan in midweek.

Richarlison made amends by teeing up Son Heung-min to fire in Spurs' third.

Joe Worrall pulled a goal back for Forest, who then also had a stoppage time penalty from Andre Ayew saved by Fraser Forster.

Lineker sees Leicester lose

Gary Lineker made the most of his absence from the BBC's flagship football highlights programme Match of the Day to watch his beloved Leicester lose 3-1 against Chelsea.

Lineker was forced to "step back" from his presenting duties after comparing the UK government's rhetoric towards refugees this week to Nazi-era Germany.

Leicester remain rooted in the relegation battle, just one point above the drop zone after a fifth consecutive defeat.

Ben Chilwell put Chelsea ahead early on against his former club before Patson Daka levelled.

But a sensational pass from Enzo Fernandez and finish from Kai Havertz put Chelsea back in front and Mateo Kovacic's strike secured a third consecutive win for the Blues, who continue to lift the pressure on Graham Potter.

Everton moved out of the bottom three and up to 15th thanks to a third 1-0 win in four home games under Sean Dyche.

Dwight McNeil smashed in the only goal inside the first minute to end Brentford's 12-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Leeds remain second from bottom but closed to within a point of safety after twice coming from behind to draw 2-2 at home to high-flying Brighton.

Alexis Mac Allister put the Seagulls in front before Patrick Bamford levelled before the break.

Read More: No Football Focus, Final Score shows on BBC as presenters go off air on Saturday to support Gary Lineker Philip Billing scored the only goal on 28 minutes as Bournemouth's first home win since November lifted the Cherries out of the bottom three. "The game was pretty much the opposite of what we wanted to show and to do today. I think we played for pretty much 95 minutes the game Bournemouth wanted to play," said Klopp. "This game was a massive knock and how it is with knocks, you have to take them, you have to have a look how big the scars are and then you go from there." Fifth-placed Liverpool are now six points adrift of the Champions League places after Harry Kane ensured a tough week for Spurs ended on a high. Lineker sees Leicester lose Gary Lineker made the most of his absence from the BBC's flagship football highlights programme Match of the Day to watch his beloved Leicester lose 3-1 against Chelsea. Jack Harrison then scored at both ends in the second half to leave Brighton still nine points off the top four, albeit with three games in hand. Brentford fans at the Brentford Community Stadium chanted slogans with the lyrics, “you let your country down” when the two teams squared up on Monday afternoon. The Spurs fans in the away stand replied by singing, “he’s one of our own”. Monday was the first time that England star Harry Kane appeared on the football pitch after his infamous penalty miss in the World Cup quarterfinal. England crashed out against France after Kane uncharacteristically missed his second penalty of the game which could have given his team lead over the eventual runners-up. "The fans were scared because today he was playing for Tottenham but not for what happened for England. It’s normal. The fans tried to create a problem, but only I think because he was playing for Tottenham and against their team," said the Spurs manager. "When they play national team together they are the best. Then when they start together in the league, the fans find ways to disrupt the other players of the opponents, because in this moment they are a player for the opponent and can hurt your team." However, akin to numerous previous occasions this season, Conte's side managed to rise to the challenge in the second half. Kane led the comeback trail as he headed one to the back of the net past, Raya, into the top-left corner. Afterward, it was Pierre-Emile Højbjerg that netted the equaliser after receiving a carefully crafted pass from Dejan Kulusevski. Spurs currently sit on the fourth spot in the points table with 30 points in 16 games. Manchester United and Liverpool are on the tails of the London-based club with games in hand. Goals by Oliver Giroud and Aurelien Tchouameni gave France a 2-1 win over England that took the holders into a World Cup semi-final with Morocco after Harry Kane equalised from the spot but then blazed a second late penalty over the bar on Saturday. France are now one win away from becoming the first back-to-back finalists since Brazil in 2002 and two from becoming the third team to retain the trophy after Brazil in 1962 and Italy in 1938.

They had to work hard for their win though as the first tournament knockout match between the two old sporting rivals maintained the excitement of this extraordinary quarter-final weekend.

France went ahead after 17 minutes, breaking as England were still complaining about a foul not given on Bukayo Saka. Antoine Griezmann rolled the ball invitingly into the path of Tchouameni, whose 25-yard low shot flew just inside the post and beyond goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

England eventually got going, pushing and probing, though without too much precision, though France keeper Hugo Lloris was quick off his line to save at the feet of Kane, then parried another drive from England’s captain.

Lloris was in action again at the start of the second half, tipping a fierce Jude Bellingham shot over the bar as England came out full of purpose.

Saka, who had looked their most threatening player in the first half, was then tripped by Tchouameni and Kane smashed the penalty high beyond his Tottenham Hotspur team mate Lloris to draw level with Wayne Rooney as England’s record scorer on 53. England were buoyed by the goal and were playing with huge confidence but though centre-back Harry Maguire brushed a post with a header they could not make their dominance count.

Instead France hit back as Griezmann swung in a cross that Giroud did brilliantly to reach in front of Maguire and plant his header into the net for his fourth goal of the tournament.

England were given another lifeline via VAR when Theo Hernandez flattened Mason Mount but Kane sent his spot kick wildly over the bar six minutes from time.

England pushed for an equaliser but when Marcus Rashford's added-time free kick fizzed just over the bar they fell to their seventh defeat in 10 World Cup quarter-finals.

England manager Gareth Southgate was full of praise for teenage sensation Jude Bellingham after he lit up the World Cup stage with an electrifying performance against Senegal.

England manager Gareth Southgate was full of praise for teenage sensation Jude Bellingham after he lit up the World Cup stage with an electrifying performance against Senegal. Southgate said Bellingham's maturity could not have been predicted by many. "I don't think we could have predicted how quickly Bellingham could mature. In the last five months that has gone to another level," said Southgate in the post-match presser. Bellingham was instrumental in England netting their first goal of the match. After a tentative start to the game, Senegal started creating a few overloads in the England penalty box and asking questions of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Just when it looked like the African champions would push on the throttle, England through a counterattack, orchestrated by Phil Foden, Harry Kane, Bellingham and Jordan Henderson managed to get their noses ahead. However, the 19-year-old using his physicality and pace managed to beat a few Senegalese defenders and dropped a pinpoint cross in front of Henderson who busted a gut to get into the box and calmly slot the ball to the back of the net. Similarly, for the second goal, it was Bellingham that won the ball high up in the English half and managed to progress it deep into the Senegalese territory and set up Kane for his first goal of the tournament. The English skipper heaped praise on Bellingham and said the teenager had everything going for him. "I think he's a fantastic player. He has everything with and without the ball. He presses really well, gets around the pitch, tackles," said Kane. "With the ball he can run, take players on, play a through ball, and as you saw today he was really important with our goal. I like Jude a lot. He's a really good person. He's mature for his age, got great leadership skills." FIFA World Cup: 'We feel this is...' - England to take a knee in their tournament opener vs Iran

Former England captain Wayne Rooney said he wi start Lionel Messi, drop Cristiano Ronaldo and bench England striker Harry Kane if given a choice between starting, benching, and dropping one between the trio. Rooney is part of the Indian channel Sports18's elite panel for the FIFA World Cup coverage.

The Manchester United legend was recently mocked and targeted by his former United teammate Ronaldo in an explosive interview with controversial English journalist Piers Morgan. Responding to Rooney's criticism of him earlier this season, Ronaldo accused the Manchester United great of being jealous of him.

Rooney had criticised Ronaldo over his behavior after the Portuguese forward refused to come on as a substitute and left the stadium early during United's Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspurs. Ronaldo came up with a rather disrespectful response for his former teammate when asked about him during the interview.

"I don’t know why he criticises me so badly… probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at a high level," Ronaldo said in his interview.
