England escaped an embarrassing last 16 exit at Euro 2024 thanks to Jude Bellingham's overhead kick before Harry Kane struck in extra-time for a 2-1 win over Slovakia on Sunday.

The Three Lions have been hyped as one of the favourites to end a 58-year wait for major tournament glory but looked set to go out with a whimper to Ivan Schranz's 25th minute goal.

However, Bellingham's moment of inspiration five minutes into six added on in stoppage time breathed new life into Gareth Southgate's reign as England boss.

Kane then headed in just a minute into extra-time to set up a quarter-final meeting with Switzerland on Saturday.

Southgate looked certain to fall on his sword after steadfastly refusing to make changes to a side that stumbled through as winners of Group C despite scoring just two goals in three games.

Kobbie Mainoo was introduced for his first competitive start in Southgate's only change and he paid the price with another lacklustre display lacking in any speed or invention for long spells.

The one saving grace of England's performances in the group stage was that a makeshift defence had held up well, conceding just once in three games.

However, they were torn to pieces early on by a Slovakia side ranked 45th in the world.

England did not heed a couple of warnings as David Hancko and Lukas Haraslin were wasteful with big chances.

Slovakia finally punished their more illustrious opponents when David Strelec was given acres of room to turn and play in Schranz, who confidently stroked past Jordan Pickford for his third goal of the tournament.

Despite his lack of experience, Mainoo was one of the few players that threatened to spark England into life as the Manchester United midfielder's effort was deflected wide.

The half-time whistle was met with a chorus of boos but Southgate still stuck to his guns and did not make a change until 25 minutes to go.

England did at least improve on a dismal first half and had the ball in the net within five minutes of the restart.

Phil Foden turned in Kieran Trippier's cross but was caught offside after a VAR review.

<h2>- Kane gets winner -</h2>

Slovakia should have doubled their lead shortly afterwards when England gave away possession and Strelec saw Pickford well off his line but failed to hit the target from the halfway line.

Southgate's hand was finally forced on 66 minutes by an injury to Trippier.

One of the major calls the England boss will come to regret is only naming one natural left-back in his 26-man squad in Luke Shaw, who has not played a minute for club or country since February.

With Shaw not match-fit, Bukayo Saka was forced to deputise at left-back to make room for the introduction of Cole Palmer.

England's chances seemed to have gone when Kane headed wide a golden opportunity and Declan Rice smashed the post with a long-range pot shot.

Southgate was even derided by the England support for bringing on Ivan Toney deep into stoppage time with chants of "you don't know what you're doing."

However, there was an incredible twist as Bellingham acrobatically turned home Guehi's flick-on from a throw-in the final moments of added-on time.

Slovakia were suddenly rattled and Toney was to have a telling contribution.

The Brentford striker headed Eberechi Eze's mishit shot back across goal for Kane to power home his second goal of the tournament.

Slovakia should still have taken the game to penalties when full-back Peter Pekarik failed to turn in a dangerous driven cross from point-blank range.

But England live to fight another day come the quarter-final against an impressive Switzerland, who comfortably knocked out holders Italy 2-0 on Saturday.

Euro 2024: Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane conjure late magic to keep England alive with tense R16 win vs Slovakia

England manager Gareth Southgate was met with boos and beer cups thrown by his own fans despite his team topping Group C as Slovenia also progressed to the knockout stages of Euro 2024 thanks to a 0-0 draw in Cologne.

The Three Lions were already assured of a place in the last 16 but can expect more criticism after failing to improve on underwhelming performances in edging past Serbia and drawing with Denmark.

"I get it that they are not happy with me, that is the reality. I am not going to back away from that. I need them behind the team," Southgate said of the supporters' reaction.

"I was not going to back away from going over to thank people for coming and giving the support that they did, but I know that this is causing an issue for the group."

England will have to wait until Wednesday's final group games to find out which of the four best third-placed teams they will face in the last 16.

But more questions will be asked over one of the favourites' ability to end a 58-year wait for major tournament glory as a star-studded forward line was snuffed out by Slovenia.

"I thought we played a lot better than the other games. We couldn't just find that finish but we look forward to the next one," said England captain Harry Kane.

Southgate made a statement with his team selection, resisting the calls to make mass changes as Conor Gallagher replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold in the only alteration from the opening two games.

If the England boss was looking for a reaction by showing faith in the other 10 who have started all three matches in Germany, he was left disappointed.

Slovenia are now nine games unbeaten, which included beating Portugal 2-0 in a pre-tournament friendly.

Declan Rice had highlighted Benjamin Sesko as their big threat on Monday.

Sesko could have been lining up alongside Rice at Arsenal next season had he not shunned interest to extend his contract at RB Leipzig.

The 21-year-old shrugged off a thigh injury to start and had the first chance of the game when he tamely headed straight at Jordan Pickford four minutes in.

<h2>Slovenian celebrations</h2>

It took 20 minutes for England to pose a serious threat and only the offside flag denied them a slick opening goal.

Rice picked out Phil Foden's run but the Manchester City midfielder had strayed beyond the Slovenian defence before squaring for Bukayo Saka to tap in.

Southgate took action at the break as Gallagher was replaced by Kobbie Mainoo.

The 19-year-old added some much needed thrust to the England midfield but they still struggled to turn dominance in possession into chances.

Kane saw a header cleared by Sesko from a corner and Rice flashed a shot wide from the edge of the box.

Southgate answered the call to give Cole Palmer his first minutes of the tournament in the final 20 minutes.

The Chelsea midfielder, who scored 26 goals at club level this season, had England's only shot on target of the second half but failed to seriously test veteran goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

A point was jubilantly celebrated by the Slovenians as it did enough for them to progress as one of the best third-placed sides thanks to three draws from their three games.

Matjaz Kek's men missed out on second place in the group solely due to Denmark's better disciplinary record.

"I didn't expect to be going into the knockout phase," said Kek. "But we showed with our play we deserved to be here and go into the knockouts against one of the favourites for the tournament."

Euro 2024: England top Group C but disappoint again in Slovenia stalemate

It was yet another dramatic evening in the Euro 2024 on Monday (June 24) as defending champions Italy scored a last-gasp equaliser which officially earned them a place in the Round of 16. The result also sees Croatia on the brink of exit as they rely on other results to clinch a place in the knockout stage. However, the result between Italy and Croatia also had England fans smiling as they officially clinched their place in the R16 before even taking the field on matchday 3 against Slovenia.

<h2>Why England are in R16?</h2>

After yesterday’s results, the picture for the R16 became clear as Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Portugal had their names in the hat. As things stand in Group C, England are currently on four points from two matches with a 1-0 win against Serbia and a 1-1 draw against Denmark. Both Slovenia and Denmark are on two points each while Serbia sit bottom of Group C with one point. Even a defeat for England against Slovenia on matchday 3 won’t have too many bearings as Gareth Southgate’s men cannot finish bottom of the group.

A defeat for England against Slovenia and a win for Serbia against Denmark will see the former finish in third position due to the superior head-to-head record. In this case, England can still qualify for the R16 as one of the four best-finishing third-positioned sides.

<h2>How does the format work?</h2>

According to the Euro 2024 format, all six group winners and all six group runners-up get a direct entry into the R16 as they comprise 12 teams. Four teams that have finished third in their groups will also join these 12 sides depending on who collected more points and have a better goal difference. Assuming England’s worst possible scenario, they cannot finish below the third spot in Group C and will qualify for R16 as one of the four best-performing third-positioned sides.

After Monday evening’s result, Hungary (three points from Group A) and Croatia (two points from Group B) are the two third-positioned sides at Euro 2024. With England’s current tally of four points already better than Croatia and Hungary, even if they finish third in Group C they will end up as one of the four best-performing third-positioned sides which will see them qualify for R16.

In similar circumstances, both the Netherlands and France are also in the R16 as they too cannot finish bottom of the respective groups and will end up in the top four of the third-positioned sides’ tally in a worst-case scenario.

Explained: Why Gareth Southgate's England qualified for R16 before Slovenia clash on matchday 3 at Euro 2024

Gary Lineker has blamed&nbsp;journalists for his spat with England's Euros stars. Lineker, a&nbsp;former England international and current BBC pundit, had a go at the team for playing a 'sh*t' brand of football which invited reaction from captain Harry Kane, a day before the Three Lions face Slovenia in a do-or-die match.&nbsp;

Lineker in his&nbsp;The Rest Is Football podcast, alongside Alan Shearer, shifted the blame on media for firing the question towards Kane by using his name.&nbsp;

'Made the headlines again, haven't I!&nbsp;Journalists being what journalists are," said Lineker.&nbsp;

"They can be a bit tricky on these things trying to wind up our footballers. We've been obviously critical of England's performance as has pretty much every journalist," he added.&nbsp;

Addressing Shearer, Lineker said the journalist who asked the question was doing so to stir the pot.&nbsp;

"We've talked about this on this podcast before about journalists not being brave enough to ask their own questions," said Lineker.&nbsp;

"I guarantee whoever asked that would have probably been critical himself. I think they do it A) to stir the pot and B) because they're too scared to ask the questions themselves."

<h2>What did Kane comment?&nbsp;</h2>

Addressing the media on Sunday (Jun 23), Kane reminded the likes of Lineker that even they hadn't won anything for England during their playing days.&nbsp;

"I'd never want to be disrespectful to any player, especially, you know, a player who's worn the shirt and knows what it's like to play for England. I always feel like [former players and pundits] have a responsibility. I know they've got to be honest and give their opinion, but also they have a responsibility of being an ex-England player," said Kane.

"The bottom line is, we haven't won anything as a nation for a long, long time. And, you know, a lot of these ex-players were part of that as well... they do know that it's tough to play in these major tournaments. It's tough to play for England," he added.&nbsp;

After England played a miserable 1-1 draw against Denmark, Lineker criticised the team for sitting deep and inviting pressure from the opponents.&nbsp;

"I mean, you can think of all sorts of words and expletives if you like, but it was sh*t," said Lineker, who also criticised manager Gareth Southgate.&nbsp;

England are sitting at the top of Group C with four points in two matches. However, a place in the next round is far from being secured as a defeat against Slovenia could complicate matters. Euro 2024: Gary Lineker blames journalists for his spat with England team

England men's football team captain, Harry Kane, has hit back at&nbsp;Gary Lineker after the&nbsp;BBC pundit and former player called England's performance against Denmark at the ongoing European Championship 'sh*t'.&nbsp;

Kane, addressing the media ahead of the final group match against Slovenia, reminded the likes of Lineker that even they hadn't won anything for England during their playing days.&nbsp;

Kane remained docile and said he wasn't "digging anyone out"&nbsp;but the reality remained that it was tough to compete in the international tournaments.&nbsp;

<h2>What did Lineker say?</h2>

After England played a miserable 1-1 draw against Denmark, Lineker criticised the team for sitting deep and inviting pressure from the opponents on The Rest Is&nbsp;Football podcast.&nbsp;

The former England international dubbed Kane's concession that the team did&nbsp;not know when to press opponents as "beyond concerning", before letting out the contentious adjective.&nbsp;

"I mean, you can think of all sorts of words and expletives if you like, but it was sh*t," said Lineker, who also criticised manager Gareth Southgate.&nbsp;

"Tactically, the first game [against Serbia]… and we’ve seen it in other tournaments as well. England kind of start OK and then get a goal and then everything changes, and it’s almost like the kind of tactics of, get a lead, hang onto it," he added.&nbsp;

"Are they not coached to play that? If anyone says that the England team is not trying or not giving 100 per cent, that is nonsense. They’re just a little bit lost tactically. And that comes from the manager, I’m afraid. It really does. He’s got to get England playing higher up the pitch, as a unit. Because, at the moment, they’re not a unit.”

England would require a win in the final league match to advance to the knockouts. Failure to make it past the group stage with the talent pool England possess&nbsp;would be considered a massive failure on the part of Southgate and Kane.&nbsp;

"I mean, you can think of all sorts of words and expletives if you like, but it was sh*t," said Lineker, who also criticised manager Gareth Southgate. "Tactically, the first game [against Serbia]… and we’ve seen it in other tournaments as well. England kind of start OK and then get a goal and then everything changes, and it’s almost like the kind of tactics of, get a lead, hang onto it," he added. "Are they not coached to play that? If anyone says that the England team is not trying or not giving 100 per cent, that is nonsense. They’re just a little bit lost tactically. And that comes from the manager, I’m afraid. It really does. He’s got to get England playing higher up the pitch, as a unit. Because, at the moment, they’re not a unit.” England would require a win in the final league match to advance to the knockouts. Failure to make it past the group stage with the talent pool England possess would be considered a massive failure on the part of Southgate and Kane. (With inputs from agencies)

Harry Kane tears into ex-player-turned-pundit Gary Lineker for 'sh*t' England criticism

In a repeat of the Euro 2020 semifinal, England had their lead canceled out by Denmark’s Morten Hjulmand after he scored a superb goal in the first half. <h2>Denmark earn valuable draw</h2>

Entering the match with high confidence having beaten Serbia 1-0, England were offered a reality check in the second match by Denmark. Skipper Harry Kane helped the Euro 2020 runners-up with an early lead having scored in the 18th minute. He pounced on a mistake at the back for the Danish side and struck with his left foot to give his side the lead. However, that lead did not last long as the Danish side came back to life in the 34th minute.

Hjulmand was given a neat pass by Christian Eriksen in the 34th minute as he scored yet another goal from outside the box. A helpless Jordan Pickford was unable to save the ball which was struck with an acute angle. The goal cancelled out Kane’s opener to make it 1-1 while no more goals were scored in the match.

In the 55th minute, Phil Foden struck the base of the Denmark goal, however, he could not get the better of Kasper Schmeichel. Gareth Southgate also made bold decisions in the final 20 minutes of the match as he brought off the trio of Kane, Bukayo Saka and Foden replacing them with Eberechi Eze, Ollie Watkins and Jarrod Bowen. Interestingly, Cole Palmer was not brought on and is yet to taste action at the Euro 2024.

England will next take on Slovenia on Tuesday (June 25) with a win guaranteeing them the top place in the group while a draw will also see them clinch a place in the last 16. Denmark will take on Serbia with the winner going through while a draw will dent the hopes of both teams.

Euro 2024: Resolute Denmark hold England to earn valubale draw as Harry Kane and Co fail to confirm R16 berth

Gareth Southgate insisted England would benefit from "suffering" in a tense finish to their 1-0 win against Serbia at Euro 2024 on Sunday.

Southgate's side made a lively start in Gelsenkirchen as Jude Bellingham headed them into the lead after 13 minutes.

England were in complete control until half-time, but lost their way after the interval and needed key saves from Jordan Pickford to hold on in their Group C opener.

It was hardly the eye-catching performance expected of the pre-tournament favourites, especially after hosts Germany laid down a marker with their demolition of Scotland on Friday.

But Southgate was adamant England could take pride from the way they kept Serbia at bay.

"We had to suffer a bit which I think is really good for us. To defend the box the way we did was really good for us," he said. "I was really pleased with a lot of the play. Second half we didn't keep it as well as I would have liked but to get the win is very important.

"Pleased we had to show a different side and show a resilience to defend our box because as a group that builds a spirit. We defended very well as a unit."

Southgate conceded England have room for improvement after their inconsistent performance.

But he said he never bought into the hype that had England installed as the leading contenders to lift the trophy in Berlin on July 14.

"We can be more efficient in the way we played in the first half which will also help us moving forward," he said. "This team is still coming together. Everyone is expecting us to waltz but there is a lot of hard work ahead.

"We've had a very complicated run in to all of this but the spirit of the group was on show tonight."

Southgate's decision to play Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in a defensive midfield role alongside Declan Rice brought mixed results.

Alexander-Arnold was caught in possession at times, but Southgate praised his contribution to Bellingham's man of the match display.

"I was really pleased. Jude has such a prominent role and Trent had to cover a lot of spaces. It's not a role he's done a lot at all," he said. "He showed great discipline, fabulous passing range he has, we're learning with him in this role but he showed some of the attributes he can bring. It's great to see him come through that test."

Euro 2024: ‘We suffered but it’s good for us’ – Southgate after England’s gritty win over Serbia

England must be "exceptional" to end a 58-year major tournament title drought, according to manager Gareth Southgate, as they kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on Sunday.

The Three Lions must cope with the pressure of being hyped as one of the favourites for the tournament as Southgate aims to finally steer a richly-talented generation to glory.

England are aiming to make amends after losing the final of Euro 2020 to Italy on home soil at Wembley.

Under Southgate they have also come close at two World Cups and the England boss has acknowledged this could his final opportunity for major tournament success.

"There are a lot of good teams in this tournament. We have to be exceptional to progress through the group and have the opportunity to go further," said Southgate at his pre-match press conference. "Our focus is to qualify from the group. When you're trying to achieve exceptional things you have to break it down into chunks.

"Our first priority is to get through the group and work from there."

Despite a remarkable goalscoring record at club and international level, England captain Harry Kane is yet to win a major trophy in his career.

"Winning a trophy for your country would be the pinnacle of every career," said Kane, who scored 44 times in his debut season at Bayern Munich. "It hasn't quite happened yet but it makes me more determined and hungry to go out and do that, starting with this summer.

"We have the opportunity to go out and do that and I'm looking forward to trying to make that happen."

England are expected to cruise through Group C, which also contains Denmark and Slovenia.

<h2>- Mitrovic threat -</h2>

There is little for Southgate to fear based on Serbia's performance in qualifying.

Dragan Stojkovic's side won just four of their eight qualifiers, losing twice to Hungary and were held on both occasions by Bulgaria.

However, they have a striker in form in Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is well known to Premier League fans from his eight years in England with Newcastle and Fulham.

Mitrovic has scored 40 goals in 43 games since joining Saudi side Al Hilal, helping them to an unbeaten domestic treble.

"He's an outstanding goalscorer," said Southgate. "We have to be ready to deal with some exceptional players across the pitch."

Serbia coach Stojkovic is aware of the scale of the task facing his side, but said England had to prove their status as pre-tournament favourites once the action gets underway.

"The team that tries to be the champion of Europe," said Stojkovic on what he expects from England.

"They have to do it on the pitch. You can say this or that and make all kind of forecasts, but all that has to be shown on the field to prove yourselves."

The match has been declared as a "high risk" fixture by the German police and the first real test of the tournament for the security forces.

Supporters will only be able to access reduced-strength beer at the AufSchalke Arena.

England's opening game at Euro 2016 against Russia saw running battles between hooligans.

The Euro 2020 final was also marred by ugly scenes as ticketless fans stormed the entrances to Wembley.

Hooliganism has also been a recurring theme at Serbian international matches and both managers called on the fans to enjoy what Southgate described as a "carnival of football".

England chase European glory as Southgate backs team to begin tournament on high

Harry Kane says England's shock 1-0 defeat against Iceland could be a "nice wake-up call", showing the scale of the task ahead of them at Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate's men are among the favourites to win the tournament in Germany but Friday's farewell party at Wembley fell flat and the players were booed off in a half-empty stadium.

Iceland took a early lead through Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson and the visitors then had the better chances to extend their advantage as the hosts toiled at both ends of the pitch.

England captain Kane knows lessons have to be learned ahead of their Group C opener against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

"Sometimes you need this wake-up call," he said. "There are areas we need to improve, especially with our pressure.

"The group games are going to be very similar to this. We are going to have to defend well, especially the longer balls, and with the ball we need to be a bit more patient."

Kane, 30, said despite the defeat there was a lot of justified optimism among England fans that the Euro 2020 finalists could go one better this year.

"Ultimately it is down to us to make sure we get it right on the pitch," he said. "This could be a nice wake-up call for everyone to realise it is not going to be as easy as people think. There is a lot of work to do."

Kane, who scored 44 goals in 45 games in his debut season at Bayern Munich, said he was raring to go.

"Being so close in the last Euros, there is a real hunger to be back. It comes around quick, if I'm honest," he said. "We had the World Cup and we are back here again. I feel like we are on the right path. But as we all know as well, it is really difficult to win these tournaments.

"There are a lot of things that you have to do right and prepare right, and you need a bit of luck here and there. Every winner does.

Loss to Iceland a wake-up call as England prepare hard for better finish at Euros, says Harry Kane

England manager Gareth Southgate said Brentford striker Ivan Toney will get some minutes in their friendly against Iceland on Friday but getting captain Harry Kane back up to speed ahead of the European Championship takes precedence. Bayern Munich forward Kane struggled with a back injury towards the end of the season and only played the final 30 minutes of England's 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, netting the third from close range.

"Toney will be involved in the game on Friday but I have got to get Harry Kane right,” said Southgate, who has to whittle down his squad to 26 players by Friday. "So sometimes the priorities of what’s required and what you would like to see as well, you can’t achieve all of those objectives. Simple as that."

Southgate said Friday's game at Wembley takes on added significance as it is their final warm-up for Euro 2024 in Germany.

England must get Harry Kane ‘right’ before Euro 2024, says Gareth Southgate

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed the secret of Harry Kane's phenomenal&nbsp;inaugural season with the Bavarian side where the England captain has smashed goals for fun.

Speaking on the eve of the big-ticket second-leg of the Champions League semifinal match against Real Madrid, Tuchel said Kane's addiction to cappuccino was perhaps fuelling his goal-scoring spree.

"How many cappuccinos he drinks a day. Every time I go into the kitchen, he is there. It must be so good, I have started doing it. He looks healthy and in good shape," said Tuchel who looked relaxed and in high-spirits, ahead of the match.&nbsp;

Bayern go into Santiago Bernabeu as the underdogs but a victory, especially after the hard-fought 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena last week, would provide the perfect sendoff for Tuchel who will be stepping away at the end of the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The German manager said he was looking at Kane to come good once again and utilise his experience to guide the Bayern side home.&nbsp;

"We got a big personality in our dressing-room on top of a goalscorer and someone with the ability to handle pressure. But we knew that. He is the captain of England. He has brought everything to the team that we could possibly have hoped for. [Against Real] he needs to prove the point and deliver.”

<h2>Kane to stay in Germany</h2>

Despite the season not going the record Bundesliga champions way, Bayern would be hoping to finish the season on a strong note with the UCL trophy. If Bayern cross the Madrid hurdle, it will be a repeat of the 2012 UCL final where Borussia Dortmund await them at the Wembley.&nbsp;

Kane has scored 42 goals in 42 games this season and insisted that he will be staying in Germany, despite the hardships this season.&nbsp;

"Of course, it's not the season I wanted with the way the league has gone and the way we got knocked out of the cup. Not winning the Bundesliga is a tough pill to swallow and it makes this competition even more important but we know there's still a long way to go," said Kane.&nbsp;

"Hopefully, I will be able to make something special happen this season. If not, I'll be ready to go again in the summer and turn things around."

Harry Kane’s unlikely secret behind his success REVEALED by Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel

England international Harry Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich in German football league Bundesliga, has set a new personal best of most goals scored in a season. Kane now has 42 goals in all competitions (Bundesliga and Champions League) in the ongoing 2023-24 season after scoring a brace against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday (Apr 28).

Kane's previous personal best for most goals scored - 41- in a season had come in 2017-18 while playing for the English Premier League (PL) side Tottenham Hotspur. He had scored 30 goals in the PL, seven in the Champions League and rest in other competitions.

This season he has scored 35 goals in 31 Bundesliga games while seven in Champions League. He is also nearing Robert Lewandowski's infamous 41-goal record in one season in Bundesliga.

"It's possible, but obviously I have to get a move on," Kane said on possibility to reach Lewandowski's record.

"I've got to maybe score a few goals next week. It's there, it's in touching distance," he added.

As for Bayern, the season has been a forgetful one as they failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time in 12 years. They also faced a humiliating defeat in German Cup third-round against third-tier Saarbrucken.

The only hope for them to win any silverware is the Champions League where they beat Premier League leaders and possible winners of ongoing season Arsenal in quarterfinal earlier this month.

Bayern now face LaLiga leaders Real Madrid in the semifinal first leg on Tuesday (April 30) and Kane would be itching to make his first season memorable in Germany.

He had transferred to Bayern ahead of the start of the ongoing season after spending 12 seasons at Tottenham from 2011-12 to 2022-23. He appeared in 320 PL games and scored 213 goals - all for the Spurs and second most in the league behind Alan Shearer's 260 goals in 441 games.

Harry Kane has reflected on the tough season with Bayern Munich amid rumours that he was mulling a return to the Premier League. The English striker cleared that he was determined to see out his contract in Germany despite results now going the way of the current Bundesliga champions. Kane was speaking after returning to London to play Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinal where he scored via a penalty to help Bayern secure a hard-fought draw. "Of course, it's not the season I wanted with the way the league has gone and the way we got knocked out of the cup. Not winning the Bundesliga is a tough pill to swallow and it makes this competition even more important but we know there's still a long way to go" Kane was quoted as saying by DailyMail. "We have to find that togetherness and team ethic where we grind out games because we haven't done it enough this year. It's been a disappointing season in the Bundesliga compared to what Leverkusen have done," he added. For the third consecutive season, Real Madrid and Manchester City will lock horns in the knockout stage, with both clubs winning one tie each in the last two seasons. Having met in the semifinal stage in the last two seasons, this year they meet at the quarterfinal stage. Both teams are still doing good in the domestic league with City standing an opportunity to win back-to-back trebles. Pep Guardiola’s side are unbeaten in their last 12 away matches in the Champions League while Real are unbeaten in their last 25 matches at home in all competitions.

The eyes will be cast on big-name players on the night, particularly on the English pair of Jude Bellingham who is having a season of his life with Real. On the other hand, Phil Foden is also in red-hot form having scored a hat-trick against Aston Villa last midweek. He will have fresh legs considering he was rested for the side’s 4-2 away win over Crystal Palace.

Champions League: Real Madrid eye revenge on Manchester City; Harry Kane’s Bayern face Arsenal in North London

Bayern Munich have been handed a timely boost with the return of forwards Harry Kane and Kingsley Coman for their Bundesliga clash against rivals Borussia Dortmund, but goalkeeper Manuel Neuer remains sidelined with injury, manager Thomas Tuchel said.

England captain Kane missed his country's friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium after sustaining an ankle injury during Bayern's 5-2 win at Darmstadt, while Frenchman Coman has been out for two months with a ligament tear in his left knee.

Bayern captain Neuer, meanwhile, picked up a muscle strain in his left adductor while training with the German national team last week and has been ruled out of the game.

Reigning champions Bayern, 10 points adrift of Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, host fourth-placed Dortmund on Saturday before visiting Heidenheim on April 6. They travel to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on April 9.

"Harry trained fully with the team yesterday, has stepped things up each day. It's all fine, he'll play," Tuchel told reporters on Friday. "King (Coman) is a huge factor for us and will be back in the matchday squad. Serge Gnabry is also back. Both are hugely important for us. Our options up front are getting bigger and the competition for places should hopefully improve quality.

"Neuer is out. Aleks Pavlovic is unfortunately not available. Raphael Guerreiro also isn't back yet. And Sacha Boey got injured during the week. Those four are out."

Tuchel was hopeful Neuer would return against Heidenheim.

"It's nothing to do with risk. The pain is simply too great. We hope a week is enough and he'll be in goal against Heidenheim," the German said.

Tuchel, who managed Dortmund from 2015-2017, said he expects a tough contest between Bayern and his former side.

"It's an emotional game, an important game in the Bundesliga with a big rivalry and history," he said. "I'm expecting an opponent that wants to win. Dortmund are very good in attack, very flexible up front. They want to have the ball. It'll be an open game.

"There's a good mood and atmosphere. We were very good in attack in recent games. We want to win."

Dortmund have suffered a blow with Dutch forward Donyell Malen out of the clash after picking up a thigh injury during international duty, the club said. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel will also miss the trip to Munich due to illness.

Sebastien Haller is fit after recovering from an ankle injury, Dortmund added.

It is also a personal league best for the England captain -- the Bundesliga's most expensive transfer at 100 million euros -- who scored between Musiala's two goals.

But he was taken off injured in the 81st after sliding into the post, getting tangled in the sidenetting and twisting his ankle.

Paris St Germain's Kylian Mbappe scored twice to lead them into the Champions League quarter-finals with a comfortable 2-1 win away to Real Sociedad in their last-16 second leg that wrapped up a 4-1 aggregate victory Kane headed in for the lead in the 38th minute to cancel out the Lazio's first leg 1-0 advantage and then tapped in their third goal on the rebound in the 66th after Thomas Mueller's first half stoppage time effort had made it 2-0. The win provides instant relief for coach Thomas Tuchel and his team that had won just one of their last five matches in all competitions prior to Tuesday and are currently 10 points off the top in the Bundesliga. Lazio, bidding for their first quarter-final spot in 24 years, merely managed to keep up for half an hour, finding no way back into the game once Bayern had gone in front. After a remarkable group stage when they went unbeaten to finish ahead of last-year's finalists Inter Milan in Group D, LaLiga side Real Sociedad, who are struggling with injuries and have won one of their last 10 matches in all competitions, ran out of steam. Mbappe was enjoying an inspired night and his speed and agility were too much for the hosts' defence to handle. He was virtually unstoppable down left channel and Tuesday's brace means he has scored 11 of PSG's last 15 Champions League knockout goals.

Champions League: Harry Kane shines in Bayern Munich win; Kylian Mbappe scores brace for PSG to book QF berth

Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw at Freiburg on Friday, an 87th-minute equaliser from Lucas Hoeler giving leaders Bayer Leverkusen a chance to go 10 points clear.

Mathys Tel's 35th-minute stunner had cancelled out an impressive opener from Freiburg captain Christian Guenter, before Jamal Musiala's spectacular solo effort looked to have snared the three points for Bayern.&nbsp;

Hoeler however had other ideas, chipping a volley through a crowded Bayern penalty area and past a helpless Manuel Neuer.&nbsp;

Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel criticised his players' "body language and lack of bite" in the first half an hour, telling DAZN "we played completely without structure and had no discipline and weren't in our positions."

Calling his side "panicky", Tuchel said: "We did things that we've never trained, that we've never spoken about.

"We played like it was the 85th minute and we were a goal down."

Musiala told DAZN he felt "frustrated".

"Since I've been at Bayern it's been in my head that we must win and we hate to lose. &nbsp;We want to win the Bundesliga, we want to win titles," he said.

Bayern have now failed to win away from home in four matches dating back to January in both the Bundesliga and Champions League.&nbsp;

Tuchel's side face Lazio at home in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday, staring down an early exit with a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Rome.

Xabi Alonso's unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen can go 10 points clear of the Bavarians with a win against lowly Cologne in their derby clash on Sunday as they chase a first-ever Bundesliga title.

"We played a good game" Freiburg's Vincenzo Grifo told DAZN. "It's clear that you have to suffer against Bayern."

Guenter blasted the hosts into the lead after 12 minutes, unleashing a spinning rocket from outside the box and into the bottom right of the goal.&nbsp;

The goal was the Freiburg captain's first of the season and the club's only strike from outside the box this campaign.&nbsp;

Not content to allow Guenter to dominate the highlights reel, Tel hit back with a dream goal of his own, curling in a long-range effort on his second league start this season.

With 15 minutes remaining, and Bayern dominating possession but failing to carve out clear chances, Musiala dribbled past three Freiburg defenders and blasted a low shot into the right corner.

"Simply instinct" said Musiala of the goal. "You try and you dribble and see what you can create."

Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen handed title advantage as Bayern Munich drop points at Freiburg

Harry Kane scored two goals in the second-half, including an injury time winner, to snatch Bayern Munich a 2-1 home win over RB Leipzig on Saturday, ending the side's worst run since 2015.

Bayern had lost three matches in a row for the first time in nine years before the club announced this week that coach Thomas Tuchel would leave in the summer.

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer told Sky "it might seem a bit like the good old Bayern luck, but we deserved to win today."

The win reduced the gap to leaders Bayer Leverkusen to eight points with 11 games left.

Neuer said Tuchel's exit "cast a bad light on us as players, that we weren't able to make it work with a top coach like Thomas Tuchel.

"It's our mistake. We want to keep things going professionally until the end."

Kane broke the deadlock midway through the first half but Leipzig hit back with 20 remaining minutes, Benjamin Sesko equalising for the visitors.

With Bayern in danger of conceding further ground to Leverkusen in the title race, Kane stepped up and scored in the first minute of injury time, his 27th league goal of the season.

Kane had a golden chance to release the pressure on the home side just five minutes in but his point-blank header was pushed onto the post by Janis Blaswich.

The England captain went close once more just before half-time but a bicycle kick was directed straight at Blaswich.

Kane finally broke through after 56 minutes, slamming a low shot into the Leipzig goal, his 26th strike in 23 games.

Leipzig, who had not lost to Bayern in the league in two years, pressured the German champions, breaking through after 70 minutes through Sesko.

Sesko collected a short Dani Olmo pass and drove his shot low, with the ball deflected by Leon Goretzka and rolling into the net.

The match looked set for a stalemate until Kane latched onto a pass from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, before volleying past Blaswich to seize a valuable win.

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel concedes 'team needs to do more' amid dip in form for Harry Kane

Bayern Munich closed the gap on Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga to a point with a 3-2 victory at Augsburg on Saturday after the hosts endured hit and miss late penalty drama.

Aleksandar Pavlovic and Alphonso Davies put Bayern into a comfortable lead at the break.&nbsp;

Augsburg's Ermedin Demirovic halved Bayern's advantage but Harry Kane struck just before the hour to help secure the three points.

Augsburg then missed one penalty while Demirovic scored from another spot-kick attempt in the final few minutes but Bayern held on for a precious win in one of the closest Bundesliga title races for years.

Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen, the last unbeaten team in the Bundesliga this season, can re-establish a four-point cushion with victory at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach in Saturday's late game.

Bayern came into this game having got back on track in midweek with a 1-0 win over Union Berlin after a shock 1-0 home defeat by Werder Bremen last weekend.

With Dayot Upamecano limping off with a hamstring injury against Union and joining Bayern's lengthening injury list, Eric Dier made his first start as Davies also returned to the starting line-up after being dropped in midweek.

But it was another player drafted into Thomas Tuchel's starting XI who got things rolling for Bayern.&nbsp;

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich cut gap at top after Augsburg suffer ‘hit and miss’ penalty drama

Manchester United’s Champions League hopes are hanging in balance as they take on Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich in Europe’s elite club competition on Tuesday (Dec 12) evening. The contest at Old Trafford will have huge bearings on the fate of manager Erik ten Hag as United face a tough run of fixtures in the coming days. Heading into the contest, United will need a helping hand to progress to the Round of 16 while they need to beat German champions Bayern Munich. The night will also see Arsenal, Napoli and Real Madrid in action with qualification already secured.

<h2>Manchester United’s equation for the R16</h2>

Currently at bottom of the four-team group standings, United need a miracle of sorts to reach the R16 with them on four points from five matches. Bayern Munich are top of the table with 13 points in five matches and have already won Group A. Copenhagen and Galatasaray are second and third respectively with five points each. Interestingly, both Copenhagen and Galatasaray meet in the other meeting while United host Harry Kane-inspired Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in two weeks.

United’s only equation of reaching the R16 is simple, they must beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday. However, they will need a helping hand from both Copenhagen and Galatasaray with their head-to-head clash should result in a draw. However, any other set of results in the two matches will see United get eliminated. If both the matches end in a draw and United fail to win on final matchday it will be curtains in Europe altogether for Erik ten Hag’s side.

A win for United coupled with a win for either Copenhagen or Galatasaray will see the Premier League side get relegated to the Europa League. If this is the case, United will be the fourth English side to join the second-tier European competition with West Ham United, Liverpool and Brighton also part of the competition. Interestingly, Newcastle United could become the fifth team to join the Europa League if results go against them on Wednesday.

The evening will also feature Arsenal and PSV in action with the former already guaranteed the top spot in Group B while PSV need a point to guarantee a place in the R16. Napoli will also need a point against Braga to secure the second spot in C with Real Madrid already through as group winners. Inter Milan’s clash will Real Sociedad will see who wins Group D with both teams already through to the next round.

Champions League: Manchester United's fate hangs in balance as Harry Kane's Bayern Munich visit Old Trafford

Gareth Southgate said the door was still "100 percent" open for Raheem Sterling after leaving the Chelsea forward out of England's squad for their final Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Southgate, whose side are already assured of their place in the tournament in Germany next year, named a 25-man group on Thursday for a home match against Malta on November 17 and a trip to North Macedonia three days later.

Sterling, who has 82 caps and 20 goals for England, has not played for the national team since last year's World Cup in Qatar, where England reached the quarter-finals.

"The door is 100 percent open not only for Raheem but for other players," said Southgate. "There's no doubt about that.

"We don't need to know about his quality, his personality. He is a crucial part of why we've had the journey we've had over the last few years."

The England boss said it was tough to leave in-form players out to accommodate Sterling, 28, who has scored four goals for Chelsea this season.

"He wasn't available in March or June and the team started on a good run," he said. "We won in Italy for the first time in 60 years, the two performances in June were excellent, so we stuck with that group," he added.

"There is no question Raheem is looking dangerous for his club, he looks invigorated since the start of the season. (But) that is an area of the pitch where we've probably got as much competition for places as anywhere."

Manchester City defender John Stones and Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah are both out injured.

Chelsea captain James is fit again after a hamstring injury, but asked to be left out of the squad after it had been expected he would replace Stones.

Southgate said: "I was hoping to call up Reece James, but he doesn't feel he is quite ready and I understand that.

"He's had a long path back from a number of injuries and he's cautious in that respect. I can understand why."

Southgate paid tribute to Bobby Charlton, who died last month and will be honoured in England's match against Malta at Wembley.

"I think he is respected around the world and clearly our greatest-ever player when you think of not only the World Cup, but also winning the European Cup and everything he did at club level," he said.

"Very sad. We were fortunate to have met him a few times and incredibly humble, so, yes, our condolences are with all his family but hopefully we get the chance to honour him at Wembley and it will be a celebration of life."

Gareth Southgate said the door was still "100 percent" open for Raheem Sterling after leaving the Chelsea forward out of England's squad for their final Euro 2024 qualifiers.

He is a crucial part of why we've had the journey we've had over the last few years." The England boss said it was tough to leave in-form players out to accommodate Sterling, 28, who has scored four goals for Chelsea this season. "He wasn't available in March or June and the team started on a good run," he said. "We won in Italy for the first time in 60 years, the two performances in June were excellent, so we stuck with that group," he added. "There is no question Raheem is looking dangerous for his club, he looks invigorated since the start of the season. (But) that is an area of the pitch where we've probably got as much competition for places as anywhere." Manchester City defender John Stones and Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah are both out injured. Chelsea captain James is fit again after a hamstring injury, but asked to be left out of the squad after it had been expected he would replace Stones. "He's had a long path back from a number of injuries and he's cautious in that respect. I can understand why." Southgate paid tribute to Bobby Charlton, who died last month and will be honoured in England's match against Malta at Wembley. "I think he is respected around the world and clearly our greatest-ever player when you think of not only the World Cup, but also winning the European Cup and everything he did at club level," he said. "Very sad. We were fortunate to have met him a few times and incredibly humble, so, yes, our condolences are with all his family but hopefully we get the chance to honour him at Wembley and it will be a celebration of life." Euro Qualifiers: Raheem Sterling left out of Harry Kane-led England squad for Malta, North Macedonia clashes

Harry Kane marked his first appearance in Der Klassiker with a stunning hat-trick as his Bayern Munich side thrashed Borussia Dortmund 4-0 away on Saturday with the deadly striker taking his Bundesliga tally to 15 goals in 10 games.

The England captain slotted home from close range in the ninth minute after Dayot Upamecano had headed Bayern in front five minutes earlier, both goals created by Leroy Sane.

Stunned Dortmund improved after the break but Bayern's record signing Kane grabbed his second goal in the 72nd minute, again from close range, to put the game out of reach.

Kane then added the icing on the cake by completing his third hat-trick of the season and second in succession in the league in stoppage time after racing clear and finishing coolly.

He is the first player to score 15 goals in his first 10 Bundesliga appearances and now tops this season's scoring charts, one ahead of Stuttgart's Serhou Guirassy.

"We are so happy that we have him in the team," captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said, while veteran Thomas Mueller joked that Kane would run out of space for match balls.

"He's soon going to need another hotel room," he said.

Victory left champions Bayern on 26 points, two points behind leaders Bayern Leverkusen who had earlier beaten Hoffenheim 3-2 away, helped by a brace from Alex Grimaldo.

Dortmund's first league defeat of the season ended a run of 25 home matches unbeaten and left them fourth on 21 points.

<h2>YELLOW WALL</h2>

After stumbling on the final day of last season to hand Bayern an 11th straight Bundesliga title, Dortmund were itching to make a statement against their rivals and the fabled Yellow Wall of supporters was in full voice before kickoff.

Bayern were humiliated 2-1 by third-tier Saarbruecken in the German Cup second round in midweek and, despite Kane's goals, they have not been firing on all cylinders, though they remain unbeaten in the league.

However, they produced their best display of the season to outclass Dortmund, seizing control from the first whistle.

Upamecano escaped his marker to thump a close-range header into the net from a delivery by Sane, who was unstoppable early on and linked brilliantly down the left before sliding a low cross for Kane to tap home the visitors' second goal.

Kane also hit the post as Bayern dominated although Dortmund's Donyell Malen wasted a great chance to pull a goal back in first-half stoppage time, curling his shot over the bar.

The home side regained some control in the second half without really offering much threat.

Kane scored his second goal from Kingsley Coman's pass and was then played through by Aleksandar Pavlovic's pass to finish past keeper Gregor Kobel, sealing Bayern's biggest winning margin away at Dortmund since a 5-1 victory in 2009.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker now has 17 goals in his first 14 Bayern games in all competitions.

Third-placed Stuttgart can move within two points of Bayern if they beat lowly Heidenheim away on Sunday.

Harry Kane enters record books with hat-trick as Bayern Munich thrash Borussia Dortmund 4-0

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has admitted it is a bit 'strange' to watch his previous team, Tottenham Hotspur in action and being at the top of the Premier League table.&nbsp;

Lauding new manager Ange Postecoglou, Kane said the team spirit was high at the club and fans were buying into the Australian gaffer's version.&nbsp;

“The manager is doing great for them with the way they're playing, the fans are right behind the team and it's definitely what they needed after the last few years," said&nbsp;Postecoglu.&nbsp;

Kane said he was keeping a close eye on the proceedings in the Premier League, adding,&nbsp;"there's still a long way to go, but as the manager said, there's no reason why the fans shouldn't be excited and happy with the way things are going. Hopefully, they can continue".&nbsp;

Kane, who is set to captain England against Australia at Wembley on Friday&nbsp;asserted that despite Spurs' excellent start to the campaign, he doesn't lament his move to German titleholders.&nbsp;

"I was there for so long and all my friends are still there, even the coaches and staff, so sometimes it's a little bit strange. But in football and life, when you go onto a new adventure, you're focused and attention is on that."

<h2>Kane's move to Germany&nbsp;</h2>

Having been in Germany for a few months now, Kane is yet to find a house and has made rather slow progress in learning the language. However, Kane added that it was because his focus was on performing for his new side.&nbsp;

"I'm trying to find houses, learn the language, get to know my new team and staff at Bayern Munich. Your attention just gets taken away. Maybe at first, it was strange to see them playing and me not being there. I have got to put all my attention on Bayern Munich and to make us as successful as possible. I am here, I am excited and it will always be a decision I never regret. I’m proud to have started the way I have.”

Kane ended his 19-year association with boyhood club Spurs earlier this summer after securing a move to Bayern for a record $126 million fee. The Englishman's arrival to Bavaria has been superb, to say the least as he has&nbsp;amassed nine goals and five assists in 10 matches for Bayern across competitions.&nbsp;

Harry Kane admits it is 'bit strange' seeing Tottenham top of Premier League table

Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane scored his first Bundesliga hat-trick and delivered two assists in their 7-0 demolition of VfL Bochum on Saturday to take his tally to seven and set a club record for most goals by a player in his first five league matches.

Kane's three goals put him above club great Gerd Mueller, Miroslav Klose and Mario Mandzukic who all scored five times in their first five Bundesliga games.

The Bavarians, who beat Manchester United 4-3 in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, could have added at least a few more were it not for keeper Manuel Riemann and his string of outstanding saves throughout the match.

The win lifted Bayern to 13 points in top spot from five Bundesliga games. Bayer Leverkusen, on 10, could join them if they beat Heidenheim on Sunday.

"We played well today and had the right mentality," Kane said. "We made it look easy and had so much speed with the ball.

"Everyone was in top form today, it felt very good. I'm getting to know the team better with every game and things are going very well for me and for the team."

The England captain, who became the Bundesliga's most expensive transfer ever when he joined the German champions this season for 100 million euros ($106.52 million), struck his first goal after benefiting from a lucky bounce in the 13th minute.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had tapped in for a fourth-minute lead from a perfectly-timed Kingsley Coman assist.

The hosts quickly killed off the game with two more goals before the break.

Matthijs de Ligt powered in a header in the 29th and Kane sent Leroy Sane through with a superb assist in the 38th for their fourth goal as Bayern outclassed their opponents.

Kane made sure of a club record when he scored with a 54th-minute penalty before Coman hit the woodwork on the hour.

Substitute Mathys Tel made it half a dozen in the 82nd minute from yet another Kane assist before the England striker's clever flick in the 89th completed his first Bundesliga hat-trick and put an end to Bochum's miserable afternoon.

"We played quickly, with a lot of fluidity," Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said. "It was a deserved win and a successful day.

"The way we approached the game was top. We never let off and that was important and a clear step forward. It was a great team effort."

Harry Kane hits maiden Bundesliga hat-trick, assists twice as Bayern Munich demolish VfL Bochum 7-0

Jude Bellingham stole the show with a goal and assist as England extended their 24-year unbeaten run against Scotland in a 3-1 friendly win to mark the 150th anniversary of the first meeting between the nations.

Phil Foden and Harry Kane were also on target as the Three Lions tamed the roar of Hampden Park and Scotland's five-game winning streak on Tuesday.

The hosts had high hopes of a famous victory in football's oldest international fixture after impressive wins over Spain and Erling Haaland's Norway in recent months to close in on qualifying for Euro 2024.

But Scotland suffered a sobering evening as England proved a class apart.

Bellingham was the pick of Gareth Southgate's stars as the Real Madrid midfielder revelled in the number 10 role he has shone in for the Spanish giants in the early weeks of the season.

"It's just a freedom role really," said Bellingham. "I know it depends on the system we play and we've got so many amazing players to accommodate.

"The team comes first always. I really enjoyed playing in that position today."

Southgate hailed the 116th clash between the sides as the renewal of a "great sporting rivalry" on the eve of the game.

However, the ugly side of the animosity between the two sets of supporters was on show even before a ball was kicked.

After the English national anthem was drowned out by a chorus of booing, a minute's silence for former Scotland manager Craig Brown was disrupted by the away fans.

<h2>Scotland suffer more</h2>

Once the action got underway Scotland were second best, even if it took England over half an hour to make their dominance show in the scoreline.

"We knew playing against England was going to be difficult but if you want to learn as a team, you have to play against the best teams," said Scotland boss Steve Clarke.

"We didn't want to lose to our old enemy, but sometimes in football you have to take your medicine."

Southgate questioned in his pre-match comments whether Foden has a future in central midfield.

But he ghosted in to a central position from his starting role out on the right to score just his fourth international goal to break the deadlock.

Fresh from scoring his first England goal against Ukraine, Kyle Walker was this time the creator as his driven cross was expertly turned home by his Manchester City teammate.

Just two minutes later, Scotland's hope was extinguished by a self-inflicted blow.

Andy Robertson's loose touch inside his own box presented Bellingham with an opportunity he was never going to miss in current form.

The 20-year-old has taken the Spanish capital by storm since joining from Borussia Dortmund and now has six goals in as many games for club and country this season.

Scotland upped their intensity after the break and got their reward through another moment to forget for Harry Maguire.

The under-fire Manchester United centre-back turned Robertson's cross into his own net 23 minutes from time.

John McGinn then headed a glorious chance over to equalise.

But England soon regained their grip on the game with Bellingham pulling the strings in midfield.

Angus Gunn produced a fine save to deny substitute Eberechi Eze his first international goal.

But the Norwich goalkeeper was powerless to stop Kane slotting home his 59th after a slaloming run from Bellingham opened up the Scotland defence.

Football: Jude Bellingham shines brightest as England inflict more pain on Scotland in historic friendly win

Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland are among the leading contenders to win this year's men's Ballon d'Or, while Spain World Cup star Aitana Bonmati leads the nominees announced on Wednesday for the women's prize.

Messi, who recently left Paris Saint-Germain for Inter Miami, is in with a chance of succeeding Karim Benzema and winning the Ballon d'Or for the eighth time in his remarkable career after leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar last year.

Haaland may be his main rival for the prize after scoring 52 goals in 53 games to help Manchester City win the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season.

The Norway striker last week won the UEFA player of the year award for last season.

PSG's Kylian Mbappe and Haaland's City teammate Kevin De Bruyne also feature among the 30 nominees for the prize, the winner of which will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 30.

Benzema, who ended a 14-year spell at Real Madrid in June when he moved to Saudi club Al-Ittihad, is also nominated.

Bonmati, winner of the UEFA women's player award, appears the favourite to claim the Ballon d'Or after being the outstanding player as Spain lifted the World Cup in Sydney last month.

She also starred as Barcelona won the Champions League and will hope to succeed her club and international colleague Alexia Putellas, winner in the last two years.

Putellas is not nominated this time having hardly played for Barcelona last season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate knee ligament in July 2022 which kept her out for nine months.

Bonmati is one of four members of Spain's World Cup-winning team nominated, along with Olga Carmona, Salma Paralluelo and Alba Redondo.

Their compatriots Patricia Guijarro and Mapi Leon are also named.

Both of Barcelona, they did not go to the World Cup after being among a group of 15 players who said last year they no longer wanted to play for Spain in a protest against the Spanish federation and coach Jorge Vilda.

Others included in the 30 nominees are Chelsea and Australia striker Sam Kerr and England goalkeeper Mary Earps.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Football: Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Aitana Bonmati lead Ballon d'Or 2023 nominees

Nigeria striker Victor Boniface scored in each half to help Bayer Leverkusen to a 5-1 victory over promoted Darmstadt on Saturday, sending his side top of the Bundesliga.

Boniface, 22, who arrived from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer, opened the scoring with a superb solo effort, slicing through the Darmstadt defence before elegantly chipping the goalkeeper.&nbsp;

Yet to claim a point in two matches after returning to the top division this season, Darmstadt equalised shortly after, Oscar Vilhelmsson tapping in from close range.&nbsp;

Argentina World Cup winner Exequiel&nbsp;Palacios scored straight after half-time, his shot taking two fortunate deflections on the way to goal.&nbsp;

Leverkusen then put the game to bed with two goals in six minutes -- another for Boniface and one for Germany winger Jonas Hofmann, his first for his new club since moving from Borussia Moenchengladbach.&nbsp;

A late Adam Hlozek goal sealed the clinical victory, which continues Leverkusen's stunning form under manager Xabi Alonso, who took over in October 2022.

After the match, Alonso said the victory was "important for the team, for Boniface, for Jonas and also for me".&nbsp;

"We want to build on that but also stay focused."

Leverkusen's next match after the international break is at Bayern Munich.

In Saturday's late game, Bayern can overtake Leverkusen with a win at bogey side Borussia Moenchengladbach.&nbsp;

Stuttgart continued their good early season home form, beating local rivals Freiburg 5-0, the same scoreline as their opening win over Bochum.

Chris Fuehrich and Serhou Guirassy bagged doubles and Enzo Millot scored a late goal, helping Stuttgart rebound from last week's 5-1 thrashing by Leipzig.&nbsp;

Guirassy now has five goals in three games for a side which needed to win a two-legged playoff against second-division Hamburg last season to avoid relegation.&nbsp;

Elsewhere, Werder Bremen put the departure of star striker Niclas Fuellkrug behind them, putting four goals past a hapless and scoreless Mainz at home.&nbsp;

Goalless in their opening two games, Bremen had four different players on the scoresheet as they claimed their first points of the season.&nbsp;

Hoffenheim came from behind to beat Wolfsburg 3-1 at home, John Brooks, Maximilian Beier and Robert Skov getting on the scoresheet after visiting striker Tiago Tomas opened the scoring.&nbsp;

In central Bavaria, Augsburg led twice but were pegged back both times by goals from Bochum's Takuma Asano as the sides played out a 2-2 draw.

Football: Victor Boniface double pushes Leverkusen to top of Bundesliga

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scooped the PFA Players' Player of the Year award on Tuesday after his stellar first season with the treble winners.

England and Aston Villa star Rachel Daly won the women's prize, voted for by fellow players.

Organised by the Professional Footballers' Association, the awards salute the best male and female players in English football in 2023.

Haaland enjoyed a stunning debut season for City, hitting 52 goals in all competitions as Pep Guardiola's men won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

The 23-year-old saw off competition from team-mates John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne, as well as from Arsenal pair Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard and former Tottenham striker Harry Kane, now at Bayern Munich.

"It's an honour to win this prestigious award. To be recognised by your competitors is a great feeling and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me," Haaland said.

"It was an unforgettable season for the team and for me personally. Winning the treble was something I never imagined, so to achieve that with such a special group of players was an amazing feeling.

"We created some incredible memories last season, but now we want to do the same again this year. We have started the season well and we need to keep going."

Saka was voted the men's Young Player of the Year while Chelsea's Lauren James picked up the women's award.

Daly and James were key performers for England in their run to the Women's World Cup final, which ended in defeat against Spain earlier this month.

Villa's Daly scored 22 goals in the Women's Super League last season, a remarkable achievement for a player who featured at left-back in the Lionesses' successful Euros campaign in 2022.

The 31-year-old beat off competition from Sam Kerr, Frida Maanum, Guro Reiten, Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw and Ona Batlle.
