'Disappointing,' says England batter Harry Brook after being snubbed from provisional ODI World Cup squad

England’s greatest modern-day match-winner Ben Stokes is back in the reckoning for the World Cup 2023, but a section of fans is still upset. They are upset with ECB’s decision to drop T20 World Cup winner and future star Harry Brook from the provisional squad for Stokes to fit in. Michael Atherton, a former captain and opener, shared the exact views but further questioned if not Brook, then who else?

Luke Wright-led selection committee named a provisional squad for the upcoming New Zealand ODIs and the World Cup 2023, with some new faces in the bowling department. Though they have kept their base from the previous edition with a star-heavy top-order, ECB dropped unfit Jofra Archer – who is said to travel to India only as a travelling reserve.

Meanwhile, following his Test debut against South Africa last year, Harry Brook emerged as the best batter in this format for England – scoring 1181 runs in 12 matches, with seven fifties and four hundreds already. After helping England win the T20 World Cup in Australia the past year, Brook was looked up to as a sure starter for England across formats.

However, with Jos Buttler urging Stokes to come out of ODI retirement and play the upcoming World Cup and Stokes agreeing to it, someone had to be overlooked, and unfortunately, it was the young gun, Brook.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Atherton said his heart goes out for Brook, but then who else would have been dropped to put Stokes back into the side? Citing examples of all other players in the line-up, Atherton said,

"Harry Brook is the unlucky one," Atherton told Sky Sports News.

"It really is a consequence of the Stokes selection and the fact he has come out of retirement. Then, how do you get him in? They want Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow.

"They have retained faith with Roy and Bairstow at the top of the order, Dawid Malan is cover for the top order there, Liam Livingstone provides cover for Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali in the spin department, so in the end, it is Brook who has given way.

"If you said to the selectors 'Do you want Brook in your team?' they would say yes, but they just don't feel as though they can fit him in," he added.

‘Great news for England fans’

With Stokes announcing his decision to unretire from the ODIs, there was a sense of jubilation among the English cricket fans, who were waiting for their greatest match-winner to return and hog limelight like he did in the previous edition.

"I think it is great news for England and for England fans who will be delighted to see such a great cricketer come back," Atherton said.

"The lure of the World Cup was just too strong. He played such a central role in England winning that World Cup four years ago, and this is his chance to defend it, probably his last chance in a 50-over World Cup. Once he made himself available, the selectors had to pick him. You have to pick a cricketer like Ben Stokes if they are available - he makes any team better,” he added.

CWC'23: Dropping Brook is unfortunate but who else would’ve made way for talismanic Stokes, asks Atherton

With Ashes already retained, Australia showed no sign of letting the chance of winning the urn in England for the first time since 2001 go away. The fifth Test at the Oval in London is Australia’s final stop on this long English tour, and they began on a good note. With an eye on a 3-1 series win, Australia retained their top bowlers, with Starc coming good on day one with a four-wicket haul.

After electing to bowl first, Australian bowlers were found wanting in the first 10 overs, with England batters starting on a brilliant note. With something to lose and all to play for, English batters showed no signs of slowing down before Mitchell Marsh removed left-handed Duckett caught on leg-side for 41 off 41 balls. Four runs later, Zak Crawley got out, while Joe Root followed on five.

Moeen Ali and England’s prospect Harry Brook put the side back on track, with both having a crack at the bowlers at will. Moeen, in his 34-run knock, smashed two sixes, while Brook, who looked like getting his maiden Ashes hundred, scored 85.

Ashes, 5th Test: Australia in command as Mitchell Starc triggers England's collapse with four-for on day one

England and Australia are set to lock horns in the fifth and final Test of Ashes 2023, starting on Thursday (July 27) at The Oval, London. After Pat Cummins-led Australia had a narrow escape in the fourth Test, in Manchester, the visitors managed to retain the urn and will now gear up to win their first-ever Ashes series triumph in England since 2001.

Meanwhile, Ben Stokes-led England dominated proceedings in the fourth and penultimate Test, at Old Trafford, Manchester, from the word go. They opted to bowl first and dismissed Australia for 317 -- riding on Chris Woakes' five-for -- and made a mammoth 592 in reply with brisk contributions from Zak Crawley (189) and fifties from Jonny Bairstow (99*), Joe Root, Stokes, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali.

In their second essay, Australia did put up a fight but were still trailing by 61 runs with five wickets in hand at stumps on Day Four. With the fifth and final day's play being washed out completely due to persistent rain, England missed a chance to level the series 2-2. They will now hope to win the series decider and prevent the Aussies from claiming the five-Test series 3-1.

Ashes 2023: 'If we win at The Oval, it will be moral victory' - Brook after Australia's Manchester escape

Harry Brook is a special player - if not for the crunch inning he played on Sunday against Australia, then probably for his credentials in the lead-up to this Ashes series. Another day, another thrilling win for England over their rivals at Headingley, this time by three wickets. Returning to bat at his chosen position (number five) in the second innings - something that matters in cricket, Brook oozed class and showed grit to fight the potent bowling attack.

After the fall of the third wicket in Zak Crawley on day four, local boy Brook entered the scene, much to a loud cheer by the crowd and straightaway got onto doing his job.

After early near misses, the young right-hand batter played some soothing drives to settle the nerves, and once he got in, there was no stopping him.

Asked to play the Bazball style, Brook obeyed the orders but with added cautions and found gaps on good balls – a sign of the fine batter that he is.

Though he and Stokes looked like taking the match home, following two quick wickets right after tea, he added 69 runs with Woakes for the sixth-wicket stand – that defined the chase.

"I think that tops it, to be honest. To do it in the Ashes, at home on my home ground as well, it was very good… it hasn't quite sunk in yet, but I'm sure it will after a few drinks,” Brook told media reporters after the match.

Speaking on his dismissal, which to many, looked surprising given how he was batting, Brooks said he wasn’t happy with himself either but expressed happiness over winning the match for England.

"It's a lot more nerve-wracking when you're sat up there than in the middle," he told Sky Sports. "I'm not one to blow up when I get in the changing room, but I had a little blow-up today. I like getting us over the line, and yeah, it was annoying that I didn't today, but I'm happy we won.

"Everybody [in the dressing room] erupted. We only needed about 20 runs, and I had complete and utter faith in Woakesy and Woody. It was tense for a little while, but when Woody hit that six, we kind of knew it was on,” the Yorkshire batter added.

‘I am comfortable batting at five

Being asked to take up the number three slot in Ollie Pope’s absence in this Test, Brook departed early on three in the first innings. However, after Moeen Ali raised his hand to weather the storm in the tight chase by asking to get promoted to the number three slot, Brook returned to his favourite batting position and delivered for the team.

"I've batted No. 5 for the last four or five years of my career, whether it's with England or Yorkshire, so I probably feel most comfortable there. But I'm happy to just be in the XI,” Brook added.

Meanwhile, the score line remains at 2-1 in favour of Australia, with the fourth Test slated to start on July 19 at Old Trafford in Manchester.

‘I am comfortable batting at five Being asked to take up the number three slot in Ollie Pope’s absence in this Test, Brook departed early on three in the first innings. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Ashes 2023: 'Leeds win tops my list, to do it on my home ground was very good,' says local boy Harry Brook

It is reported that England will make major changes for the Headingley Test and could bring back Moeen Ali in place of Pope while they will use Brook at No.3. The hosts also have Joe Root in their ranks to fill the void, and he has batted at that position in the past but is unlikely to switch his batting position.

Ashes 2023: England likely to replace Pope with THIS batter at No.3 as Headingley gets ready for third Test

England have given a perfect answer to Australia's massive 416-run first innings score after they started on front foot on Day 2. The hosts already trailing 0-1 took the counter-attacking approach on the Day 2 of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s as Ben Duckett and Harry Brook took the charge against a resolute Aussie bowling attack. The day came with mixed fortunes for the visitors having seen Steve Smith score his 32nd Test ton while Nathan Lyon got injured and limped off the ground in the second session while fielding.

Smith leads Australia to 416

Starting the day at an unbeaten 85, Steve Smith looked in perfect touch after misfiring at Edgbaston in the first Test. The former skipper scored his 12th Ashes ton in the first session which also saw him go level with Steve Waugh for most hundreds by an Australian player in Tests, only Ricky Ponting with 41 has scored more. Smith would soon depart on 110 while skipper Pat Cummins did not get the desired help which saw the Aussies end their first innings at 416.

For England, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue took three wickets each while Joe Root ended with two scalps.

England start on front foot

The hosts started their innings on the front foot as Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley put a 91-run stand for the first wicket. While Crawley departed for 48, it was his partner, Duckett who made the difference, he was approaching his third Test hundred but missed it as he was dismissed on 98 by Josh Hazlewood in the 43rd over. However, useful contribution from Ollie Pope (42) saw England in the ascendency as they dominated towards the end of the day.

Injury scare for Aussies

Australia on the other hand were handed a major blow as star spinner, Nathan Lyon playing in his 100th Test was seen limping off the field. In the 37th over he injured his right calf while attempting to stop the ball. He was not seen after that on the field and has given the management a major scare as the visitors could now be forced to use part-time options for the rest of the match if Lyon does not recover.

At Stumps on Day 2, Brook was batting on 45 while skipper Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 17 as England ended the day at 278/4 from 61 overs. The hosts still trail Australia by 138 runs in the first innings.

Ashes 2023: England counter attack on Day 2 as Duckett, Brook lead charge; Lyon injury blow to Aussies

Australia’s Nathan Lyon produced a magical moment on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test in Ashes 2023 as he produced an early freak moment of the series contender on Friday, June 16. England batter Harry Brook was left to rue a misjudged moment on Day 1 after being dismissed by Lyon. While Brook was not so pleased with the moment, the Aussies gained the upper hand in the contest in the post-lunch session as they dismissed half of the England team.

What happened with Brook?

In the second session on Day 1, on the second ball of the 38th over, Brook failed to judge the flight of the delivery which hit him and tried to leave. While he thought that the ball has passed to the wicketkeeper, the ball hit him and went on to hit the stumps. The freak delivery dislodged the bails and saw Brook get dismissed for 32. The dismissal paved the way for the Aussies as they came back in the contest when the Bazball was gaining control on Day 1.

At the time of writing on Day 1, England were 202/5 with Joe Root unbeaten on 50 and Jonny Bairstow on 12. England will be hoping to put a respectable total on board on Day 1 as they look to continue their impressive run.

For Lyon though, the series could be crucial as he tries to reach 500 Test wickets having started the Ashes on 487 scalps from 121 matches.

Having lost the Ashes 0-4 Down Under in 2021-22, England will be out for redemption as they try to get the better of the Aussies. England have not won the Ashes since 2-15 and will to end their drought of the Ashes, where they also won the ODI and the T20 World Cup. They will have history on their side as the Ashes has not been won by a host nation for more than a decade.

England's Harry Brook cannot wait to make another Test series his own. The Ashes 2023 being just one sleep away, Brook seems ready to take down the most-talked-about Aussie attack at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
"Obviously they might have a little bit of extra pace, but if they bowl quicker, it tends to go to the boundary quicker," Brook said while addressing the media ahead of the first Test in Edgbaston on June 16th.

Ashes 2023 - 'The quicker they bowl...': Harry Brook warns Australia's pace battery

Sunrisers Hyderabad starlet Harry Brook has opened up on his stunning maiden century for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after helping his side to a comprehensive win. Playing against hosts Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens, Brook became the first batter to score a ton in the season and helped SRH register their second win of the season.

"I think I was putting pressure on myself after the first few games. If you go on social media, people are calling you rubbish and you start to slightly doubt yourself a little bit,” Brook said in the post-match.

The England batter was one of the highly-rated stars before the start of the IPL season and lived up to the expectations. Brook scored an unbeaten 100 off 55 deliveries that saw him score 12 fours and 3 sixes and scored at a strike rate of 182.

"But I just went out there with a 'I don't care' mentality tonight and thankfully came up. There are a lot of Indian fans out there (on social media) who are going to say 'well done tonight' but they were slagging me off a few days ago. Glad I could shut them up,” the England batter further added. IPL 2023: Went out there with 'I don't care' mentality - Harry Brook opens up on stunning hundred for SRH

Despite handy contributions from captain Nitish Rana (75) and Rinku Singh (58) in the second innings, KKR fell shy of the target by 23 runs as SRH won its second game on the trot in IPL 2023. Earlier, SRH's million-dollar baby Harry Brook became the first batter to complete a hundred this season, hitting 100* off 55 balls.

After being asked to bat first, SunRisers Hyderabad got off to a flyer, thanks to the makeshift opener, Harry Brook, who took the attack to the opposition from the word go. The right-handed batter slammed a few fours early on before Andre Russell dent the momentum with two wickets in his first over.

Captain Aiden Markram joined forces with Brook as the pair went berserk during the middle overs. Markram carried his excellent run of form to the IPL as he smashed his first fifty of the season in just 25 balls, hitting two fours and five sixes. Soon after he got out, the onus again fell on young Brook's shoulders.

The 24-year-old Englishman took his time, as he played some of the finest-looking shots and completed his maiden IPL hundred in the final over off Umesh Yadav. Courtesy of an all-round batting show, SRH posted a mammoth 228 for four in 20 overs.

In reply, the hosts got off to the worst possible start, losing three wickets inside the Powerplay. The tide for them changed in the sixth over, when KKR skipper Nitish Rana smoked seamer Umran Malik for 28 runs in his first over. The dangerous Andre Russell departed on just three soon after, leaving KKR in hot waters.

However, the last match hero for KKR, Rinku Singh, started from where he had left and alongside Rana, began smashing boundaries at will. The pair looked like giving Kolkata a chance in this game too, but tight bowling from T Natarajan brought SRH back into the game.

Unlike how Rinku turned the fortunes the other night against Gujarat, he failed to replicate the heroics at Eden Gardens. Although he scored a 31-ball 58 on Friday night, his team fell short of the target by 23 runs.

Riding on Harry Brook's maiden IPL ton, SRH make it two in two, beat KKR by 23 runs at Eden Gardens

England's Harry Brook created history on Friday by becoming the first batter in IPL 2023 to register a hundred. Playing against Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens, the right-handed Brook slammed his maiden IPL century off 55 balls in his first season and helped his team post a mammoth 228 for four in 20 overs.

After getting out early in the previous three matches, Brook, who opened for the second time, began well by taking the attack to the opposition from the word go. He slashed a few fours off Umesh's first over before taking down each bowler coming on to bowl. With smaller boundaries and the dew factor coming into play, the exciting batter Brook made the most of this chance and scored big.

While he got assistance from captain Aiden Markram, who also scored a brilliant 50 off 26 balls, hitting two fours and five sixes, Brook didn't lose his concentration and stroked as cleanly as he was doing for England across formats ahead of IPL 2023.

The record-breaker in other formats, and a T20 World Cup by now, Brook was always confident and proved his worth against a potent spin-dominant KKR bowling attack at their home ground.
In the final over, off the second-last ball, he hit straight to the long-on area and completed his hundred. Let's not forget, SRH had splurged a whopping INR 13.5 crores on him at last year's auction.

However, given what KKR had produced in its previous match against Gujarat Titans, SRH will be aware of the threat in the second innings.

Million Dollar baby Harry Brook scores maiden hundred of IPL 2023, hits 100* off 55 balls

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to kick off on March 31 (Friday) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. The opening game will see the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) take on the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The season is keenly awaited as it marks the return of home-and-away format, after a four-year-hiatus, and all eyes are on the big and marquee players in the mega event.

The likes of Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, David Warner, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya and many other top players are expected to set the stage on fire. On the other hand, many ardent fans are desperate to see how some debutant and young players will perform in the upcoming edition. Amid all this, former England pacer Steve Harmison has predicted that Harry Brook could end up with the Player of the Tournament award in IPL 2023.

Brook has been in sensational form ever since his international debut for England since January 2022. He has represented England in six Tests, three ODIs and 20 T20Is and already has four hundreds in whites and strikes at over 135 (137.77) in the shortest format. He has impressed with his ability to hit big as well as remain consistent across formats. Thus, Harmison believes the 24-year-old, who will represent the Aiden Markram-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), can win the Player of the Tournament award.

"I think he might start with an orange cap as well. I think Harry Brooke is going to be the best player. I think he could get Player of the Tournament," Steve Harmison was quoted as saying by givemesport.

"When you're on a wave like he's on, things just seem to fall into place. Sometimes they sort of nosedive and dive-bomb, but I don't see it with Harry. For me, I think he might start with an orange cap because he's in an orange kit. I've got a funny feeling if he's around for the whole series. The Sunrisers, I think they've done some decent business. I think they've got some decent business over the line. I think Brooke could be the icing on the cake for them and I think he might just score the runs," Harmison added.

While Brook's Test numbers outshadow his white-ball performances, he has the ability to switch his game as per the situation and is expected to go big with the willow for the Orange Army. The 2016 champions will kick off their campaign versus the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 2 (Sunday) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

IPL 2023: Not Kohli, SKY or Stokes! Ex-Eng pacer says THIS SRH debutant could win Player of the Tournament

Harry Brook is making the right noise in world cricket at the moment. Having achieved so much in such a short span of time makes you believe that he’s cut for great things in life. Joe Root, his fellow Yorkshire and England batter, couldn’t stop praising the 24-year-old following his masterful knock in the first innings of the second Test in Wellington, where Harry scored a stunning 186. Root, who also returned to form hitting an unbeaten 153, said he had the best seat in the house while watching Brook bat on day one.

Rescuing England after they were reduced to three for 21 at one stage, Harry and Joe added 294 before stumps were called on day 1. The next day started with Root hitting a few boundaries before Matt Henry dismissed Brook on a well-made 186 off 176 balls – his fourth hundred in his past six Tests.

Besides, Brook is also chasing a unique record of scoring most runs after first six Tests set by two of the former greats – Sunil Gavaskar (912) and Sir Donald George Bradman (862). For him to surpass them, Brook will have to score 104 or more runs (as he’s currently on 807) in the second innings.

NZ vs ENG: Joe Root cannot stop praising fellow Yorkshire batter, says he's batting on a different planet

Harry Brook made 184 and Joe Root 101 in an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 294 which carried England to 315-3 at stumps on the rain-shortened first day of the second cricket test against New Zealand. A day which began without promise with a lost toss and three early wickets ended after only 65 overs and after a parade of records and milestones which saw England take almost unbreakable control of the match and series.

Harry Brook, Joe Root put New Zealand to the sword in Wellington

England’s most in-form batter at the moment Harry Brook has found himself chasing records set by two of the greatest batters ever – Sunil Gavaskar and Sir Donald George Bradman. Following his fourth century in his fifth Test innings, young Brook is line to become the player with most runs after first six Test matches.

While Indian legend Gavaskar leads the chart with 912 runs, Bradman is second on the list with 862 runs – whereas, the right-handed Harry, who after stumps on day one has 807 runs to his name, could well break their records over the course of the ongoing Test. Besides, he also became the first batter ever to score these many runs in just first nine Test innings.

Brimming with confidence after first Test’s success, both didn’t give much chances to the hosts to make a comeback on day one. In a magnificent 294-run stand for the fourth wicket so far, Brook scored 184* off 169 balls, hitting 24 fours and five sixes while Root ended his century drought, remaining unbeaten on 101 off 182 with seven boundaries. "We've got them (New Zealand) on the back foot now; hopefully we can carry that on in the next few days," the 24-year-old Harry Brook said after stumps on day one. Even in the first Test at Mount Maunganui, Brook scored fifties in both innings, hitting 89 in the first and 54 in the second.

Rajasthan Royals’ head coach Kumar Sangakkara feels their limited budget heading the IPL 2023 mini-auction cost them Harry Brook – someone who Sangakkara thinks would have fitted well into the RR’s setup. Royals had the budget of just INR 13 crores while Brook was bought by SunRisers Hyderabad for INR 13.25 crores. Though Rajasthan went all out for Brook early on, having no cushion eventually saw them letting go of their main target.

Speaking with Times of India (TOI) post the IPL 2023 mini-auction, Sangakkara revealed Royals’ main target was Harry Brook only. Though missing out on him feels unfortunate, Sangakkara added even getting players like Jason Holder, Donovan Ferreira and Joe Root, Rajasthan did a decent business at the auction table.

“Our main target in the first round was Brook, but unfortunately we missed out on him. But we are very happy to get Jason Holder and Donovan Ferreira among a host of good players we think are very promising. Then we could also get Joe Root. I think we have got a good squad," Sangakkara told TOI from Kochi.

Sangakkara further added when they chalked out the best XI ahead of the mini-auction, Brook was the first name on the list with Holder and Nicholas Pooran coming after him.

“It was about which addition would make our side better, the first XI that you put out on the field. And the answer was we must target Brook. And next was Holder or maybe Nicholas Pooran. But with a limited budget we really had to plan that out,” RR head coach said.

Sangakkara also accepted they were ‘caught in the middle’ during the auction in order to execute what they had planned.

“It was a complicated kind of decision we had to make in terms of planning for the best case scenario and worst case scenario and we were caught in the middle, but we were well set with a lot of planning, data and thought being put into that. So it was a long process,” Sangakkara concluded.

Harry Brook, however, was not the costliest English player to be sold in IPL 2023 mini-auction. While Ben Stokes went for as hefty as INR 16.25 crores to Chennai Super Kings, it was the young all-rounder Sam Curran who was bought by Punjab Kings for a record-breaking INR 18.50 crores, making him the most expensive player to be bought in IPL history.

IPL 2023: Our limited budget cost us Harry Brook, feels Rajasthan Royals' Kumar Sangakkara

The IPL 2023 mini-auction has started off with a bang. Among the early set of players, England's power-hitter Harry Brook -- who made heads turn during England's successful tour of Pakistan -- fetched a whopping deal after being acquired by the 2016 winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 13.25 crore (INR 132.5 million). On the other hand, SRH also got another big name in their kitty, getting Punjab Kings' (PBKS) former skipper Mayank Agarwal for INR 8.25 crore (INR 82.5 million).

Talking about Brook, the 23-year-old saw a big bidding war for him with SRH and Rajasthan Royals (RR) fighting hard for his services. After taking his price into double digits, the bidding war wasn't over before Hyderabad finally won the war by shelling out a huge sum.

Meanwhile, there were a lot of eyeballs on Mayank once his name was announced. The former Punjab captain's mention also led to a bidding war between SRH, Punjab, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before the former got him for INR 8.25 crore. It is to be noted that Hyderabad entered the IPL 2023 mini-auction with the largest purse; i.e. INR 42.25 crore (INR 422.5 million). Hence, they have started off on a smashing note by getting two big names under their belt.

It will be interesting to see if they go hard on some of the big all-rounders who can also captain them. At present, they have Bhuvneshwar Kumar as a captaincy option along with Mayank.

England is enjoying its cricket, and why they wouldn’t – they just defeated Pakistan in an away Test series on their first visit to the country in 17 years. Captain Ben Stokes and the coach Brendon McCullum reinvented an attacking brand of cricket, that everyone now calls ‘Bazball’. A lot of young players and even some of the veterans have contributed immensely towards making this as a success, and one such player is the youngster named Harry Brook.

The 23-year-old middle-order batter was touted to be the next big thing in English cricket even before he made his Test debut for England. In his first outing in Tests against South Africa, Brook made just 12; but later, on his first away tour to Pakistan, Harry scored his maiden hundred (153) in Rawalpindi. In the following innings, he hit 87 runs, and helped England win the first Test by 74 runs. Even in the next Test in Multan, Harry scored yet another hundred – this time 109 on a slower turning track, asserting his place for years to come. Not only this, he picked up Man-of-the-Match award for his knock in this Test that England won by 26 runs.

"The expectation on his shoulders coming into this team, because of how good he's been for Yorkshire, was obviously huge," Ben Stokes said. "But I think that just shows that kind of stuff doesn't really affect him.
