The newly-appointed England T20I vice-captain, Brook scored a four and a six during his brief stay at the crease (13 off eight balls) before Varun sent him packing on the third ball of his first over. That dismissal again triggered an almost batting collapse for England before handy contributions from the lower order propelled them to a fighting 165 for nine in 20 overs.

IND vs ENG 2nd T20I: Harry Brook roasted over ‘smog remark’ after Chepauk failure

Harry Brook reflected on his team&rsquo;s failed batting performance against India in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/ind-vs-eng-1st-t20i-live-score-today-india-vs-england-latest-scorecard-jan-22-ind-vs-eng-playing-xi-prediction-pitch-report-toss-timing-venue-eden-gardens-kolkata-8644275" rel="dofollow">first T20I in Kolkata</a>. Looking back at how they fared at the Eden Gardens after being asked to bat first, Brook said &lsquo;smog&rsquo; made it tougher for him and other visiting batters to pick the ball, adding he is expecting a clear weather at the Chepauk (in Chennai).
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jos-buttler?page=24" rel="dofollow">Jos Buttler</a>&rsquo;s England side scored just 132, with the captain scoring the bulk of runs (68). &ldquo;Chakaravarthy is an exceptionally good bowler,&rdquo; Brook said ahead of the second T20I against India in Chennai. &ldquo;But with the smog the other night, it was a lot harder to pick. Hopefully, the air is a bit clearer here, and we can see the ball a bit easier.&rdquo;

Although Brook is among the best Test batters going around, having scored plenty of runs in red-ball cricket lately and even having a T20 World Cup title to boast about in the shortest format, he admits struggling to take on spin like he does to pace.
&ldquo;Facing spin in T20 cricket is probably the hardest thing in the game, especially because I always get out trying to absolutely smack it. Maybe I&rsquo;ve got to rein in a little bit, but we&rsquo;ll see,&rdquo; Brook said.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I think I do have a method. It&rsquo;s just trying to do it consistently and more often. I come in the middle order, so the first few balls I face are usually off-spin." &ldquo;If I get out early, it&rsquo;s usually against a spinner, so maybe my stats aren&rsquo;t as good against spin, but there&rsquo;s always going to be criticism in some parts,&rdquo; he continued.
<h2>Changes to England Team for 2nd T20I</h2>
Following the thrashing they suffered in the first T20I in Kolkata, England are bound to make a few changes to their line-up.
For the next T20I in Chepauk, traditionally a spin-friendly venue, scheduled on Saturday (Jan 25), England have replaced seamer Gus Atkinson with Brydon Carse, while rookie all-rounder Jacob Bethell is also facing a health scare and missed Friday&rsquo;s training. England has called up keeper-batter Jamie Smith as his backup.

'Smog' cost England in Kolkata - Harry Brook's bizarre excuse for 1st T20I loss

Greg Chappell has used Harry Brook&rsquo;s name in the same breath as that of veteran Sachin Tendulkar, saying Brook&rsquo;s sensational performances and approach remind him of the Indian great. The former Team India head coach, who had a prime Sachin under his wings, said Brook&rsquo;s rise to the top in such a brief period looked like outpacing Sachin regarding the impact on the game at the same age.
&ldquo;Harry Brook, a batting sensation whose performances and approach I compare to the great Sachin Tendulkar,&rdquo; Greg Chappell wrote in his column for the Sydney Morning Herald.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Remarkably, Brook&rsquo;s early career stats suggest he might even have outpaced the Indian maestro in terms of impact at the same stage,&rdquo; the Aussie great added.
Brook is England&rsquo;s batting mainstay across formats and is among their top run-getters in Tests since emerging on the international scene. At 25, Brook has won a T20 World Cup, drew the home Ashes against Australia, and holds plenty of batting records &ndash; most of which belonged to some of the best batters in history.&nbsp;
In 24 Tests played thus far, Brook has scored 2281 runs at an average of 58.48, with eight Test centuries and ten fifties to his name.&nbsp;
&ldquo;At just 25, Brook has rapidly become one of the most talked-about cricketers in the world. He boasts a simple but devastatingly effective batting method.
&ldquo;Much like Tendulkar in his early years, Brook doesn&rsquo;t move excessively in the crease before the ball is delivered,&rdquo; Chappell continued.
<h2>Comparing the two</h2>
While Sachin broke onto the cricket scene as a teenager, Brook made his international debut three years ago as a 22-year-old. Comparing the two, Chappell noted that Brook's numbers are better than Sachin after the first ten Tests, and like the Indian maestro, Brook&rsquo;s ability to combine aggression with consistency makes him hard to contain.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Comparing their first 15 Tests reveals an eye-opening narrative. Tendulkar scored 837 runs at an average of just under 40, with a couple of centuries. Brook, in contrast, had made 1378 runs at an average of nearly 60, with five hundreds,&rdquo; Chappell said.
&ldquo;To be fair, Sachin was still a teenager while Brook is in his mid-20s.
&ldquo;Brook&rsquo;s ability to combine aggression with consistency makes him a nightmare for bowlers because, much like Tendulkar, he&rsquo;s incredibly hard to contain.
&ldquo;For England, he&rsquo;s not just a bright prospect; he&rsquo;s a player around whom their future could be built,&rdquo; Chappell added.
<h3>What makes Brook and Tendulkar special?</h3>
A fantastic Test batter of his time, Chappell, explains what makes these two batters special.
&ldquo;Brook&rsquo;s stability and minimalistic technique allow him to read the angles of the bowler and adjust his strokes with precision. The result? An extraordinary ability to score from most deliveries, whether they&rsquo;re pitched full, short, or on an awkward length.
&ldquo;Tendulkar&rsquo;s early brilliance lay in his ability to use the bowler&rsquo;s pace to his advantage, scoring heavily on both sides of the wicket. Brook, though a bigger and more powerful player physically, has a strikingly similar ability to manipulate the field with wristy flicks, crunching drives, and punishing back-foot shots,&rdquo; Chappell added.

ICC Test Rankings: Harry Brook replaces Joe Root to become No. 1, Virat and Rohit suffer massive drops

England’s legendary batter Joe Root has hailed youngster Harry Brook as the ‘best in the world’ as he continues to impress in 2024. Brook played a key role in England’s latest away success after they beat New Zealand 2-0 with a Test to go on Sunday (Dec 8). According to Root, Brook is by far the best player in the world considering his impact on the game. The English batter scored 123 and 55 in the Wellington Test while completing 1000 runs in Tests in 2024.

<h2>Root hails Brook after a stellar year</h2>

"If you asked me, Brooky is by far and away the best player in the world at the minute," Root said on Monday (Dec 9).

"He has such an all-round game: he can absorb pressure, he can apply it, he can whack you over your head for six, he can scoop you over his head for six, he can smack spin, he can smack seam. He's so hard to bowl to."

With 1,099 Test runs in 18 innings (at the time of writing), Brook is the fourth-highest run-getter in the red-ball format. According to Root, Brook is by far the best player in the world considering his impact on the game. The English batter scored 123 and 55 in the Wellington Test while completing 1000 runs in Tests in 2024. Root hails Brook after a stellar year "If you asked me, Brooky is by far and away the best player in the world at the minute," Root said on Monday (Dec 9). "He has such an all-round game: he can absorb pressure, he can apply it, he can whack you over your head for six, he can scoop you over his head for six, he can smack spin, he can smack seam. He's so hard to bowl to." With 1,099 Test runs in 18 innings (at the time of writing), Brook is the fourth-highest run-getter in the red-ball format. NZ vs ENG: Joe Root hails 'best player in the world' Harry Brook after stellar 2024

Gus Atkinson claimed a hat-trick before England's batsmen let loose to power the visitors 533 runs ahead of New Zealand on Saturday and in full control of the second Test. The home side will need to chase an enormous score in the fourth innings after England went to stumps at 378-5 in Wellington on day two.

Captain Ben Stokes resisted any urge to declare, instead cementing England's position of power as four batters posted half-centuries to build on their first-innings advantage of 155.

Joe Root was at the crease on 73 while Stokes struck a whirlwind 35 not out against a tiring attack, after Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett were both dismissed in the 90s.

The fast-moving nature of the Test means the Black Caps should have ample time to reach any target, as they bid to square the three-match series after losing the opener in Christchurch by eight wickets.

However, history is firmly against them. The highest successful fourth-innings chase at the Basin Reserve is 274, achieved by Pakistan against the hosts in 2003.

New Zealand's hopes of getting back into the Test were scuppered in the opening 40 minutes of play when they lost their last five wickets to be all out 125.

Atkinson (4-31) removed the last three with successive deliveries to become the first Englishman to claim a Test hat-trick since Moeen Ali against South Africa seven years ago.

The seamer was all smiles after bowling Nathan Smith for 14, then having Matt Henry caught in the gully and trapping Tim Southee lbw.

<h2>Bethell crestfallen</h2>

England made batting look a lot easier, most notably when Bethell (96) and Duckett (92) combined for an untroubled 187-run second-wicket stand.

Bethell fell agonisingly short of a maiden Test ton when edging Southee to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell. The 21-year-old looked crestfallen as he exited after a 118-ball knock which featured 10 fours and three sixes.

Opener Duckett was closing on his fifth Test ton when he played-on off Southee (2-72), ending an innings of 112 balls.

First-Test centurion Harry Brook reached 55 before being caught in the deep off spinner Glenn Phillips while Root put some modest recent form behind him to post another batting milestone.

Root became only the fourth player to reach 50 runs in 100 different Test innings.

Ollie Pope fell for 10 off seamer Matt Henry (2-76), who earlier dismissed Zak Crawley for eight, continuing a lean series for the opener. In 19 Test innings against the Black Caps, Crawley has scored just 193 runs at an average of 10.15.

NZ vs Eng, 1st Test: Harry Brook's 132 puts England ahead vs New Zealand after end of Day 2

Pakistan Cricket is in shambles.&nbsp;

The hosts lost the first Test against England by an innings and 47 runs after getting all out on 220 inside the first session on day five. Pakistan created an unwanted record with this defeat, becoming the first team in the 147-year Test history to lose a match by an inning after scoring 556 in the first innings.

England take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.&nbsp;

Pakistan also endured a sixth consecutive loss in Tests under Shan Masood, the third straight this season after losing the home series to Bangladesh earlier. This loss, however, is Pakistan's seventh at home since 2022; the hosts are also winless in 11 Tests played in the past two years.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Pakistan batted first in Multan, smashing a whopping 556, with Captain Shan Masood and all-rounder Salman Agha completing their respective hundreds.

Although, at first, it looked like a decent score on this flat Multan wicket, England's first-inning total made it look tiny.&nbsp;

Despite losing captain Ollie Pope on a second-ball duck, England batters made mayhem in Multan, with returning Zak Crawley and injured Ben Duckett hitting fifties.&nbsp;

No one by then would have known that it was just the beginning of something massive to follow.&nbsp;

The celebrated pair of Joe Root and Harry Brook took charge and went on to amass gigantic scores in the first innings. While Joe Root registered his highest Test score of 262, becoming the first English batter to complete 20,000-plus runs in international cricket, Harry Brook became the first Englishman after the great Graham Gooch to hit a Test triple hundred, smashing 317 - his best in this format.&nbsp;

<h2>Pakistan falter in the second inning</h2>

After bowling for nearly three days, with six of their seven bowlers conceding more than 100 runs each - a record in itself, a worn-out Pakistan Team fumbled under pressure in the second inning, losing six wickets inside 150 runs before the end of day four.

Although Salman and Aamer Jamal stitched a 100-run-plus stand for the seventh wicket, it wasn't enough as they surrendered early on day five in the first Test.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Pakistan also became the team with the most losses (5*) in Tests after scoring 500-plus in the first innings.

Multan will host the second Test starting Tuesday (Oct 15).

Shambles! Pakistan fall to a new low, loses Multan Test against England by an inning

Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood reflects on his side's embarrassing performance in the first Test in Multan, which they lost by an inning and 47 runs. Pakistan scored 556 in the first innings yet lost the game with one inning left, becoming the first team in Test history to attain this unwanted record.&nbsp;

"We've spoken about the third innings, but it's a team game, when you put 550 on the board, it's important to back it up with ten wickets, and that's what we didn't do. That's the key, how can the batting and bowling in the first innings contribute to a lead. The onus is to set the game up well and finish it off," Masood said after England wrapped up Pakistan on 220 in their second innings.

While Pakistan began brilliantly by removing England captain Ollie Pope on a second-ball duck in the second innings, what followed later took them by storm.&nbsp;

England's most decorated pair in this XI - Joe Root and Harry Brook, went bonkers, smashing 262 and 317, respectively. Their 454-run stand for the fourth wicket is the highest for England for any wicket for any pair.&nbsp;

After whacking Pakistan for nearly days, registering a whopping 823/7 declared - the fourth-highest team total ever, England wrapped up Pakistan's six wickets quickly before stumps on day four.&nbsp;

Though Salman Agha and Aamer Jamal delayed the inevitable with a century-plus run partnership, England picked the remaining four wickets early on day five to beat Pakistan in the first Test.&nbsp;

"We should learn from England, they found ways to take 20 wickets. That's the challenge the side has going forward. We're in the middle of the series, we've talked about a squad mentality. Test cricket is the ultimate format, the best teams find a way. Scoring runs and taking wickets are the non-negotiables," he continued.

<h2>'We're hurt'</h2>

With Pakistan losing their sixth consecutive Test under Shan Masood and seventh overall at home since 2022, the fans are hurt evidently, with the Test captain admitting that they will do everything possible to ensure a quick turnaround.

"We love playing the game, we're hurt by the results, we're hurt as a nation, but need a quick turnaround. We're not getting the results that Pakistan cricket deserves. We have to get this right as a squad."

Meanwhile, Multan will host the second Test starting Tuesday (Oct 13), and Rawalpindi will be the venue for the third and final Test.&nbsp;

England's most decorated pair in this XI - Joe Root and Harry Brook, went bonkers, smashing 262 and 317, respectively. Their 454-run stand for the fourth wicket is the highest for England for any wicket for any pair. After whacking Pakistan for nearly days, registering a whopping 823/7 declared - the fourth-highest team total ever, England wrapped up Pakistan's six wickets quickly before stumps on day four. Though Salman Agha and Aamer Jamal delayed the inevitable with a century-plus run partnership, England picked the remaining four wickets early on day five to beat Pakistan in the first Test. 'We're hurt' With Pakistan losing their sixth consecutive Test under Shan Masood and seventh overall at home since 2022, the fans are hurt evidently, with the Test captain admitting that they will do everything possible to ensure a quick turnaround. "We love playing the game, we're hurt by the results, we're hurt as a nation, but need a quick turnaround. We're not getting the results that Pakistan cricket deserves. We have to get this right as a squad." Meanwhile, Multan will host the second Test starting Tuesday (Oct 13), and Rawalpindi will be the venue for the third and final Test. 'We're hurt as a nation' - Pakistan captain Shan Masood after Multan Test shocker against England

England batter Harry Brook hailed the impact of Joe Root and&nbsp;he termed him the greatest player in English cricket history. Records were broken left, right and centre on Thursday (Oct 10) as&nbsp;England batters Root and Brook stitched a partnership of 454 runs for the fourth wicket, with the latter scoring a triple ton. Root scored 262 before getting out but made a significant impact on the contest, having also become England’s top run scorer in the Test format.

<h2>Brook in awe of Root</h2>

"He's obviously one of the best players, and England's greatest-ever batter," Brook told Sky Sports. "What comforts you the most when you're out there is watching how easy he makes it look, and how hard it is for the bowlers to get him out. He's playing the ball so late, you bowl your best ball, and he's scoring runs off it.”

After coming out to bat on Day 3, England batters were tasked with narrowing down the lead on Day 4 of the Test match. During this time, Brook slammed his maiden triple hundred before falling to Saim Ayub. Brook played 322 balls to score 317 runs, which was again a record for the fastest triple hundred by an Englishman.

England's rising batting star Harry Brook said he was delighted that he has&nbsp;finally eclipsed his father's highest club score, when he hit a triple hundred against Pakistan in Multan on Thursday. The 25-year-old smashed a career best 317 that, coupled with Joe Root's 262, helped visitors pile 823-7 declared -- the fourth highest total in Test cricket -- England's third best.

With a big 267-run lead over Pakistan in the first innings, England caught the home team napping at 152-6. At close, Pakistan still needed 115 to avoid an innings defeat on the final day.

"It was wonderful batting with Rooty," said Brook. "We spoke about the game moving forward and going out there after lunch to try and put the foot down and get a decent lead."

"It makes you feel so comfortable when you're watching him at the other end, he makes the game look so easy, and he's playing the ball so late and making the balls look slow."

Brook completed his triple century with a boundary off part-timer Saim Ayub, reaching the mark off 310 balls before he top-edged a sweep off the same bowler and was caught by Shan Masood.

Brook cracked 29 fours and three sixes in his 439-minute stay at the crease.

Multan Test: Harry Brook happy to eclipse father's highest club score in marathon feat against Pakistan

Pakistan leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed is being treated in a hospital in Multan after he complained of illness during the ongoing first Test against England. After bowling 31 overs on day three, Abrar complained of high fever and body soreness on the morning of the fourth day, taking no further part in the game.&nbsp;

Per the PCB, Abrar has undergone several tests, and everyone awaits updates once the results are received.

Much like every Pakistani bowler, Abrar was taken for cleaners on two days that he bowled. He endured a difficult time against Joe Root and Harry Brook, who scored 262 and 371, respectively, adding 454 for the fourth wicket - the highest partnership by any pair for any wicket against Pakistan in Tests.

With the Multan wicket offering nothing for the bowlers, especially for spinners, Abrar deployed a negative line and length on day three, bowling around the wicket to the batting pair. That strategy, however, didn't pay dividends as England hammered Pakistani bowlers, with six bowlers conceding more than 100 runs in the innings.

Abrar returned with figures of 174/0 in 35 overs.&nbsp;

<h2>Injury haunts Abrar</h2>

Having made his professional debut as an 18-year-old for Peshawar Zalmi in PSL, the right-arm spinner spent several years on the sidelines with a persistent back injury. Ahead of the Australia Tests late last year, Abrar sustained a nerve injury, ultimately missing the three Tests.&nbsp;

Abrar also missed the first Test against Bangladesh in August this year.&nbsp;

Although Pakistan named Noman Ali and Zahid Mahmood in the side for the first Test, they released the pair ahead of the start of the game.

England sits in a commanding position&nbsp;

After Pakistan scored 556 in the first inning, England scored 267 more runs in reply, scoring 823/7 declared, their second-highest team total ever and fourth overall.&nbsp;

While Harry Brook slammed his maiden triple ton, Root completed his highest individual score in Tests (262).&nbsp;

In the second innings, England reduced Pakistan to 152 for six in 27 overs, with the hosts trailing behind by 115 runs, with one day remaining.&nbsp;

Pak vs Eng, 1st Test: Double centurion Joe Root becomes first Englishman to score 20k int'l runs

England's Harry Brook created history during the third ODI against Australia on Tuesday (Sep 24), becoming the youngest England skipper to score an ODI hundred. Brook is England's stand-in skipper for the series in place of injured Jos Buttler. Before him, Sir Alastair Cook had the record of being England's youngest skipper with ODI century which he had scored aged 26 in 2011.

Apart from that, England also snapped Australia's 14-ODI win streak going back to ODI World Cup 2023 which they had won by beating hosts India in the final.

Thanks to Brook's hundred, England managed to keep the five-match series alive with a 46 run win by Duckworth Lewis System.

Brook, who scored unbeaten 110 off 94 balls, came in to bat with England struggling at 11-2 in a chase of 305 after Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc had removed both openers.

"It’s just nice to see some rewards,” Brook said post-match. "I’m glad I managed to play the way I wanted to. It’s nice to get that first hundred on the board, and hopefully there’s plenty more to come."

He received excellent support from Will Jacks (84) in a match-changing stand of 156. By the time rain curtailed England's pursuit of a target of 305, they had long since done enough to win.

Brook came under fire for his post-match comments following England's defeat in the series opener in Nottingham when he tried to explain some loose dismissals by saying: "If you get caught somewhere on the boundary or in the field then who cares?"

Australia coach Andrew McDonald was left to rue the absence of key spinner Adam Zampa, a late withdrawal through illness, as England ended his side's run of 14 consecutive ODI wins.

The fourth ODI of the series will be played on Friday (Sep 27) with Australia leading the series 2-1.

Brook was simply pleased to be back in the runs.

"I'm relieved, for sure," he told reporters. "It's nice to get that first hundred on the board and hopefully there's plenty more to come."

"I feel like I've been a little bit stop-start this summer. I've had a lot of starts -- 30s and 40s -- and then not managed to convert, which is frustrating.&nbsp;

Brook came under fire for his post-match comments following England's defeat in the series opener in Nottingham when he tried to explain some loose dismissals by saying: "If you get caught somewhere on the boundary or in the field then who cares?"

But Brook was adamant he had been misunderstood.

"I think people took that a little bit the wrong way," he said. "You've got to go out and play fearlessly and almost have that 'who cares?' attitude but that's not a 'who cares if we lose?' attitude. We all want to win, but you don't want to go out and have that fear of getting out.&nbsp;

"You've seen it so many times in the Test environment, at the start Stokesy (England red-ball captain Ben Stokes) was getting out caught at mid-on which is unheard of before, so you've got to go out with that fearless attitude and try to take it to the bowlers."

Australia coach Andrew McDonald was left to rue the absence of key spinner Adam Zampa, a late withdrawal through illness, as England ended his side's run of 14 consecutive ODI wins.

McDonald had no doubt about Brook's quality, saying: "Full credit to Harry. He's an impressive player and he's going to have a long career for England.

"He's going to give us some headaches over the journey. The way he played, the way he led today...sometimes you've got to take your hat off to the opposition. This is one of those moments."

ENG vs AUS: Harry Brook's maiden hundred helps England keep series alive with 3rd ODI win vs Australia

Batter Harry Brook will lead England for the first time during the five-match Australia ODIs, with regular captain Jos Buttler ruled out of the remainder of the home summer with the calf injury he suffered in July. Buttler’s injury meant all-rounder Liam Livingstone got a recall to the One-day side following his star showing in the recently concluded T20I series. Liam top-scored in two contested matches with 124 runs and was also the highest wicket-taker (5).

England’s squad for Australia ODIs –&nbsp;Harry Brook (captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley and John Turner.

The management has been grooming Brook to lead England across formats for some time now. Having led their Under-19 side during the 2018 World Cup before, Brook captained Yorkshire in four matches during the 2022 T20 Blast and led Northern Superchargers in the Hundred earlier this year, where he won five out of six games.

The ECB named Brook England’s Test vice-captain for the Sri Lanka series, which the hosts won 2-1.&nbsp;

Though the management rested the star batter for Australia T20Is with Phil Salt leading in Buttler’s absence, Brook returned to the ODI setup as the new skipper.

Buttler, who watched Brook grow into a first-team player, wishes him good luck in his first assignment as England captain.&nbsp;

“It's going to be a great opportunity for Brooky to be the captain,” Buttler said.&nbsp;

“He is a pretty laid-back character, but I think he has everything in line. He is a really good thinker about it... I'm sure he'll do that his own way, and he'll get a feel for those moments [in games].&nbsp;

“That's what we're encouraging everyone as a side - whether that's a player or a captain - is to try and identify those moments that you think can go a long way to you winning the game and going for it and committing to it,” he continued.

<h2>Buttler eyes return during Caribbean tour</h2>

Admitting feeling gutted to miss out on the Australian series, Buttler said his recovery has been slower than expected but looks forward to plenty of cricket that awaits.&nbsp;

With England’s next white-ball assignment being an away tour of the West Indies, Buttler aims to attain full fitness by then.

"It's a bit slower than hoped," Buttler said of his recovery.&nbsp;

"I'm going to be missing the ODI series as well, so that's a shame. But at my age, just got to make sure I get it right. It's obviously a shame to miss some cricket and stuff, but I just want to get it right. There's lots to look forward to in the future.

"Injuries force you to stop and take a different perspective, and it's nice to be around the guys, getting to know some new faces and seeing what they're all about; trying to share my ideas and listen to theirs and how they operate and building those relationships, which are obviously really important,” he added.&nbsp;

Harry Brook to lead England in Australia ODIs with injured Buttler ruled out, Livingstone returns

Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando rocked England with three top-order wickets before Harry Brook's unbeaten fifty left the first Test at Old Trafford interestingly poised on Thursday. &nbsp;

After rain washed out the morning session, England were 176-4 -- 60 runs behind Sri Lanka's first innings 236 -- at tea on the second day.

Asitha Fernando had figures of 3-46 in 10 overs, having dismissed opener Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for just six in his first innings as England captain before also removing key batsman Joe Root for 42.

But the 25-year-old Brook was 53 not out, with fellow rising star Jamie Smith unbeaten on 22 in an unbroken stand of 51 in 11 overs.

Sri Lanka had collapsed to 6-3, losing their first three wickets for no runs in 10 balls on Wednesday's opening day of this three-match series.

But their bowlers still had runs to play after Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva top-scored with 74 after winning the toss and Milan Rathnayake made 72 as he set a new record for the highest score by any Test debutant batting at No. 9.

Play got underway Thursday with the floodlights on full beam in conditions favouring Sri Lanka's quicks.

Asitha Fernando thought he had Dan Lawrence lbw for 10 but the batsman, opening after Zak Crawley was ruled out with a broken finger, successfully reviewed umpire Paul Reiffel's decision on height.

Two balls later, however, the paceman's inswinger to Duckett, who added just five to his overnight 13, had the left-hander leg before with Sri Lanka overturning former Australia seamer Reiffel's original not out verdict on this occasion.

<h2>Pope bowled</h2>

Asitha Fernando's day got even better when he dismissed Pope, leading England after Ben Stokes was ruled out due to a torn hamstring, with a ball that knocked over the off stump after nipping back through the gap between bat and pad.

Lawrence, however, pulled successive Asitha Fernando deliveries for four as the bowler dropped short.&nbsp;

But just as he was getting into top gear, Lawrence edged a ball angled across him from left-arm seamer Vishwa Fernando and was well caught by diving wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal for 30.

The makeshift opener's angry swish of the bat made clear how much Lawrence felt he had contributed to a dismissal that left England 67-3.

Pope's exit, however, had brought in Root, with the former England captain boasting a superb record against Sri Lanka of more than a 1,000 runs, including four hundred, in 11 previous Tests at an average of nearly 60.

Root was soon into his stride, with an onside clip for four off the expensive Rathnayake (0-45 in seven overs), before both he and Yorkshire team-mate Brook drove the paceman down the ground in near-identical textbook fashion.

Asitha Fernando, though, ended a promising stand of 58 in 11 overs when Root inside-edged an intended drive and a diving Chandimal held a fine low catch.

But new batsman Smith confidently advanced down the pitch to drive left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya for six before Brook completed a 59-ball fifty.

Brook was very close to his grandmother; he always admired her, as she stood by him and helped him become the player he is today. In January this year, while Brook was training with the England Team in Abu Dhabi for the India tour, he received news of Pauline feeling sick. He rushed home straightaway. Brook missed the India series, and after his grandmother passed away a couple of months later, he decided against playing for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024. "When I came home from Abu Dhabi, it was a very tough time, and I'm glad I did come home. Obviously, it was a big decision to make. I hadn't played hundreds of games for England, so to just turn down a big Test tour like that [India] was a big decision to make. "But she comes before all of that. She would have come out there a couple of years ago, so I had to come back and support her as much as I could. I managed to take her out for a coffee and whatnot in that first week I was back,” he added. Brook ready for England return Brook won the T20 World Cup in Australia two years ago and says he is as excited for the title defence as anyone in the team. England’s white-ball Captain, Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott will name the provisional 15-man squad for the marquee event on April 30 (Tuesday), with Brook likely to be part of it. "I'm looking forward to it if selected," Brook said of the T20 World Cup. "We join up at the end of next month. I'm looking forward to being back with the lads and hopefully producing the goods for England again,” he concluded.

Emotional Harry Brook dedicates County tons to late grandmother as he eyes England comeback during T20 WC

DC Squad for IPL 2024: England star Harry Brook has opted to join County Championship side Yorkshire for the start of the upcoming season after having withdrawn from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Brook who was set to feature for Delhi Capitals in the ongoing season, withdrew from the tournament due to the death of his grandmother Pauline. Brook had&nbsp;earlier withdrawn from the five-match Test series against India with his grandmother being ill during that period. However, he will now return to competitive cricket for the County Championship.

<h2>Brook to feature for Yorkshire</h2>

"Now that Brooky isn't going to the IPL, I suspect he's going to be available to us for the first few games, including Leicestershire," head coach Ottis Gibson told the club website.

"He loves playing for us, and Rooty is also going to be available for some games in that early period. Having those two playing for us would be special."

Brook has endured a troublesome past few months after his grandmother was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. This led to Brook being unavailable for the Test series against India and had to withdraw at the last moment. However, he was still in contention to play in the IPL where he was bought by the Capitals for INR 4 crore (£380,000) during December 19 auctions.

Another reason for Brook’s unavailability for the IPL was the workload management as the defending T20 World Cup champions prepared to retain their crown. Had he played in the IPL and the India Test series, he would have been playing relentless cricket in the build-up to the T20 World Cup which starts on June 1 in the USA and West Indies.

Harry Brook has withdrawn from the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to the death of his grandmother. The English batter said he was prioritising his mental health and that he wanted to be around his family when they were grieving. News of Brook's withdrawal from the tournament came out early on Wednesday (Mar 13) and instantly led to speculations that another English player had walked out after securing the bag. Brook took to social media to post a statement wherein he said he was excited to be part of the Delhi Capitals franchise but had to pull out in the end. "Whilst I don't think I should need to share my personal reasons behind this decision, I know there will be many asking why. So I do want to share this," wrote Brook. "I lost my grandmother last month - she was a rock to me and I spent a huge amount of my childhood in her home; my attitude to life and love for cricket was shaped by her and my late grandfather. When at home, there would hardly be a day go by that didn't include seeing her," he added. Reigning ODI champions England name their final 15-man squad for the World Cup. Harry Brook replaces opener Jason Roy who has been struggling with a back problem.

England replace Jason Roy with Harry Brook for their title defence at the ODI WC

England men’s selection committee, headed by Luke Wright, made eyebrow-raising last-minute amend to their final 15 for the Cricket World Cup 2023 by dropping Jason Roy and drafting in Harry Brook. Roy, who played an integral part in helping England win their maiden World Cup four years ago, is out with back spasms and didn’t take part in the four ODIs against New Zealand recently.

Dawid Malan, who opened in three out of the four matches, and top scored&nbsp;with 277 runs at 92.33, including a 96 and a hundred, will now open with Jonny Bairstow at the CWC 2023, with former captain Joe Root coming in at number three. Ben Stokes, who unretired from ODIs following the home Ashes, will take up the fourth slot, with Captain Jos Buttler coming in next. Two hard-hitting all-rounders, Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali, will play the pinch-hitters' role at six and seven.

Although Harry Brook, who made headlines with his unbelievable exploits across formats in the past year since his debut, failed to impress the selectors with his scores in the NZ ODIs, he still got roped into the final 15 as an outright backup for any position in the top five.

Three bowling all-rounders – Sam Curran, Chris Woakes and David Willey alongside the express pace of Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and new-ball bowler Reece Topley complete the seam-bowling department, while Adil Rashid is picked as the lone specialist spinner.

Addressing the squad announcement, Wright said he is pleased with the final 15 and believes this group can deliver on the bigger stage and help England defend their title.

"We have selected a squad we are confident can go to India and win the World Cup," Luke Wright, England's national selector, said. "We are blessed with an incredibly strong group of white-ball players, which was underlined by the performances in the series win against a very good New Zealand team."

"The strength of the group has meant that we have had to make some tough decisions on world-class players with Jason Roy missing out and Harry Brook coming into the squad," Wright added.

Meanwhile, England will host Ireland for three ODIs at home, starting September 20, flying to India afterwards. England will begin their title defence against Bangladesh on October 10.

Harry Brook included, Jason Roy dropped as England name final 15 for Cricket World Cup 2023

England’s star batter Harry Brook has been given an ODI World Cup lifeline as he has been included in the England squad for the New Zealand and Ireland series. The squad announced on Wednesday, September 6 sees the inclusion of the T20 World Cup winner who was surprisingly overlooked for the ODI World Cup squad. However, with amendments in the squad still possible until September 27, Brook could still make the England squad for the ODI World Cup.

<h2>Brook included in England squad</h2>

England are set to face New Zealand in a four-match ODI series followed by an Ireland tour later in the month. While the competition for places is still high, Brook’s inclusion in the squad for the series could come as a big spanner in the work for the likes of Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, and Liam Livingstone as they are struggling for form.

If Brook makes the desired impact on the side during both the series, he could be on the plane to India for the World Cup. However, this could mean one of Roy, Malan, and Livingstone could miss out on the showpiece event. As things stand, if Brook is drafted into the World Cup squad, Roy could make way for him as the other two options offer utility options.

The 24-year-old Yorkshire star has played only three ODIs for the national team where he has scored 86 runs with a best of 80. He was an important member of the squad that won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

Harry Brook to give ODI World Cup audition as star player included in latest England squad to face NZ, Ireland

Harry Brook strengthened his chances of a late call up to England's World Cup squad with a timely reminder of his white-ball ability, as the world champions eased to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I at Chester-Le-Street.

Harry Brook issues world cup reminder

England’s limited-overs skipper Jos Buttler has urged Harry Brook to not give up for a place in the national team for the ODI World Cup despite his omission from the squad. Brook, dropped for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, smashed a 41-ball ton in The Hundred as he made a statement to the selectors on Thursday, August 24. The sensational all-rounder was dropped from the England squad in favour of Ben Stokes, with the expectation of the same 15-member team set to feature in the World Cup.

<h2>Buttler urges Brook</h2>

"There's still a long time before everyone is meant to get on the plane, so we'll wait and see what happens," Buttler said after Brook’s statement hundred.

"We all know Harry's a fantastic player and we saw what he can do the other night. It's not like it's a surprise: we know what a brilliant player he is, he's just the unfortunate one at the moment to not be in that squad at the moment,” Buttler added.

Brook was a surprise exclusion from England’s team for the New Zealand series that could see him miss out on the World Cup. However, Buttler thinks there is still time for the Northern Superchargers man to come into the team as he has great potential to make a mark. The 24-year-old scored an unbeaten 105 from 42 deliveries against Welsh Fire.

Stokes has returned to the England side for the time in a year after initially announcing his retirement from the game. He will be part of the England squad for the New Zealand tour while he is all but guaranteed a place in the squad for the World Cup.

<h2>Ben Stokes in contention</h2>

"Of course, Ben Stokes coming back and being available just as a batter sort of changes the dynamic a little bit. Ben's a fantastic player to be able to welcome back, so it's a really tough selection."

England are hopeful of naming the same 15-member squad for the World Cup before the September 5 deadline. If this is the case Brook will miss out on a place in the team, having featured prominently in the T20 World Cup success in 2022 in Australia.

Jos Buttler urges Harry Brook not to give up on ODI World Cup berth, says 'there's still a long time to go'

England legends, including Kevin Pietersen and Stuart Broad, were left flabbergasted after selectors overlooked Harry Brook from the provisional Cricket World Cup 2023 squad. The promising cricketer should have been first to be on that flight to India, feels recently-retired Broad, while KP still thinks Brook will somehow gatecrash into the final 15 before the first game gets underway between England and New Zealand on October 5.

Broad, who played with Brooks since his debut in Tests last year, said had he been asked a couple of months ago who would be the first to get picked across all formats as things stand, he would have said Harry Brook.

Speaking with Sky Sports recently, Broad said, "If you had asked me a couple of months ago whether I saw an England side - Test, ODI, T20 - without Brook in it, I would have said no. He is such a brilliant player and will be fantastic in the future, but ultimately Stokes is a born match-winner and must come back in."

Ben Stokes’ inclusion brings a sense of jubilation among fans, given what he brings to the table and even Brook while addressing the elephant in the room said, "[He] is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can't really complain, can I? Obviously, it's disappointing but I can't do anything about it now. You've just got to move on. I'm trying not to think about it anymore."

<h2>Hard to slot Brook in a star-studded England squad</h2>

England’s provisional World Cup squad is a star-studded one, and even if one tries to pick the odd one out to bring Brook into the side, it’s hard to pinpoint any.&nbsp;

Looking into trimming the bowling department for the same, chief selector Luke Wright feels that cannot be done, considering the Cricket World Cup is a long tournament, and injuries to bowlers are bound to happen.

"We feel we need a couple of extra seamers, with the natural way of seamers getting injured, and the guys in the squad do have an injury record. It's more likely a few bowlers go down, so we're having to cover ourselves seam-wise."

Out of internationals at least until the World Cup ends, Brook is said to be among the travel reserves for the mega event.&nbsp;

ALSO READ: Post pictures, not confidential information: BCCI schools players after Kohli reveals Yo-Yo score on Instagram Broad, who played with Brooks since his debut in Tests last year, said had he been asked a couple of months ago who would be the first to get picked across all formats as things stand, he would have said Harry Brook. Speaking with Sky Sports recently, Broad said, "If you had asked me a couple of months ago whether I saw an England side - Test, ODI, T20 - without Brook in it, I would have said no. He is such a brilliant player and will be fantastic in the future, but ultimately Stokes is a born match-winner and must come back in." Ben Stokes’ inclusion brings a sense of jubilation among fans, given what he brings to the table and even Brook while addressing the elephant in the room said, "[He] is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can't really complain, can I? Obviously, it's disappointing but I can't do anything about it now. You've just got to move on. I'm trying not to think about it anymore." Hard to slot Brook in a star-studded England squad England’s provisional World Cup squad is a star-studded one, and even if one tries to pick the odd one out to bring Brook into the side, it’s hard to pinpoint any. It's more likely a few bowlers go down, so we're having to cover ourselves seam-wise." Out of internationals at least until the World Cup ends, Brook is said to be among the travel reserves for the mega event. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Two former captains share different views on Ben Stokes' decision to unretire from ODIs and make himself available for the World Cup later this year. While former Ashes-winning Aussie captain Tim Paine calls this a ‘selfish’ decision, Vaughan, another Ashes winner, slammed Paine for the same, calling Stokes a complete team player.

Following the Ashes 2023, reports in the British media suggested that England selectors are contemplating requesting Stokes to come out of ODI retirement and play this year’s 50-over spectacle. For that, even ODI captain Jos Buttler has had conversations with Stokes around this.&nbsp;

All the rumours came true when Luke Wright - the England selector, earlier this week, announced Stokes has decided to unretire from ODIs and will play the World Cup. However, it led to Harry Brook’s exclusion from the provisional squad for the New Zealand ODIs and WC, which irked some experts, with Paine being one.

Speaking on SEN Tasmania, Paine labelled this call selfish, saying, ‘me (for Stokes) is written all over it. He slammed the English Test captain for deciding to retire and unretire per his convenience, even if it means dropping off a regular player from the side – Brooks in this context.

“Ben Stokes coming out of one-day retirement, I found that interesting. It was a bit of, ‘Me, me, me’, there isn’t it? It was, ‘I’ll pick and I’ll choose where I want to play and when I want to play’, and, ‘I’ll play in the big tournaments’," said Paine speaking to SEN Tasmania.

“The guys who played for 12 months, ‘Sorry, thanks. But can you go and sit on the bench because I want to play now?’" he added.

<h2>Vaughan slams Paine for ‘poor’ take</h2>

Michael Vaughan, known for being vocal about his thoughts, slammed Paine, saying knowing Ben Stokes, he is the most selfless cricketer in the English dressing room and someone who always thinks about the team first.&nbsp;

“Ben Stokes is the most selfless cricketer I have ever known .. He puts Team before himself more than any other player .. Ridiculous suggestion from Tim ..,” Vaughan replied to a tweet mentioning Paine’s statement.
