The year 2024 began on a culturally significant note for India. The Indian band Shakti made the country proud at the Grammy Awards 2023 with its first cultural win. Zakir Hussain won three Grammys in one night. He presently proudly holds five Grammy awards in his accolades. But what is it about India that everyone expects? Not just participation from the country, but a winning moment too.&nbsp;In an exclusive interview with WION, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, who is&nbsp;part of the band Shakti, explained the changing perception.

How did you feel when your name was announced at the Grammys?

It was pure joy. A fantastic feeling. Sitting there amongst so many musicians and everyone was so appreciative and supportive. It was so great to go up on stage and make India proud. But I will tell you something, I was extremely confident about winning the Grammy and I was expecting it. (Laughs). So, once they announced the names, it was really exciting.&nbsp;

Tell us about your music journey with Shakti?&nbsp;

Shakti played a vital role in my career as a musician. I have collaborated with various musicians, and done Carnatic music, but Shakti was like a doorway to heaven. I found a lot of opportunities thanks to this band.&nbsp; 
Shakti is the defining element of what fusion is all about. The band created the concept, the definition of fusion. When we did the 50-year tour in the US, it was a huge success.&nbsp;

So, I was reading that 'The Moment' which won a Grammy, was conceptualised during the pandemic. How did you all collaborate?&nbsp; 
 
That was a unique experience. I was in Seattle, Zakir Hussain was in San Francisco, John McLaughlin was in Monaco. Shankar Mahadevan was in Mumbai, V Selvaganesh was in Chennai so we were in five different places, and we came on a Zoom call. &nbsp;John ji and Zakir Bhai decided that they would make an album, and then all of us sent our compositions. Everyone would listen to that, share their opinion, and add layers. It was two years of work, but it was worth it. We couldn't go out as we were all stuck in home. But the time was utilised in a very productive way.&nbsp;

You mentioned you knew you would win the Grammy. &nbsp;Were you so confident about it because you had Zakir Hussain in your band?&nbsp;

Absolutely true. The nomination itself was a big surprise for me. When we were composing 'This Moment' I was not thinking about a Grammy nomination at all. I got a call from Selva ji, and we all got so excited. From then onwards, I was always confident that we would win. I know this because I have witnessed with my own eyes, the kind of dedication, John ji and Zakir bhai have given to Shakti, they are great masters of music. Then we also have Shankar ji, Selva ji, why wouldn't we win a Grammy? Our brotherhood deserves a Grammy. John ji loves Shakti a lot. I see a gleam in his eyes when he talks about Shakti. He always talks about Shakti like his own child.&nbsp;

Can you comment on the soft power of Indian Classical music?

A living example of that would be Zakir Hussain. He can duet with different bands. He plays with Ustad Shahid Pervez Khan and various other musicians. He is also on percussion tours. He is an ambassador for Indian classical music. He is a pathbreaker and guide. Coming to Indian classical music, there is an emotional quality to our music that transcends boundaries. It appeals to everyone. Indian classical music has unique system that catches people's imagination everywhere.&nbsp;

How does the world perceive Indian music?&nbsp;

The perspective about India and Indians has changed a lot. People are more confident now because everywhere Indians are doing well as a unit. Indians spend a lot on art and culture which is very important for our ecosystem. Our musicians are also ready to collaborate. This multiplicity has caused a ripple effect. These are some of the reasons why Indian culture is getting noticed everywhere.&nbsp;

Dion, who has been out of the circuit and battling a neurological disorder called stiff person syndrome, came on stage to give away the Album Of The Year award and was greeted by the audience with a standing ovation.&nbsp; 
 
The show organisers&nbsp;had been teasing that an “absolute global icon” would be presenting the final award for Album of the Year and they didn’t disappoint.

Indian band Shakti's This Moment won the Best Global Music Album at the Grammys 2024. The fusion band comprises of musicians Shankar Mahadevan, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ganesh Rajagopalan and Selvaganesh Vinayakram.&nbsp; 
 
The news was first shared by musician and Grammy winner Ricky Kej who was attending the ceremony in Los Angeles.

A song featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been nominated for Grammy Awards 2024. The song has been nominated in Best Global Music Performance category. The song has been composed and sung by Gaurav Shah and Falguni Shah (Falu) and features a bit of a speech made by the prime minister on millets. The PM can be heard talking about the importance of millets and the need to make them part of our diet.

Name of the song is "Abundance in Millets".

The song itself conveys the message of the prime minister through music, saying that consumption of millets promotes good health.

A music video of the song was posted on X by musician Falu earlier this year. The PM had also reacted on the post saying, “Very creative and will inspire more people to embrace millets for healthy living!"

Millets like Sorghum, Pear Millet, Finger Millet, Foxtail Millet, Little Millet, Browntop Millet Proso Millet, Barnyard Millet, Kodo Millet have been part of Indians' diets for long. But during the Green Revolution, focus was more on the high yield crops as aim was to make India self-sufficient in foodstuffs.

Traditionally, millets are considered to be secure crops for a farmer because of their resilience and climate-adaptability in even drought conditions. All nine commonly known traditional millets are produced in India.

The year 2023 has been declared as "International Year of Millets" by United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The proposal was brough forward by India and received endorsement from 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

'Abundance in Millets' has competition from other songs before it gets the coveted Grammy trophy. In the category it has been nominated in, there are other songs like Shadow Forces (by Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer &amp; Shahzad Ismaily), Alone (Burna Boy), Feel (by David), Milagro Y Disastre (by Silvana Estrada), Pashto (by Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer &amp; Zakir Hussain ft. Rakesh Chaurasia) and Todo Colores (by Ibrahim Maalouf ft. Cimafunk &amp; Tank and the Bangas).

While acknowledging that artificial intelligence is making a swift entry into showbiz, Grammys announced that only "human creators are eligible to be submitted for consideration", which means that AI-generated music will not be eligible for Grammy nominations for their 2023 ceremony.&nbsp;

“Only human creators are eligible to be submitted for consideration for, nominated for, or win a GRAMMY Award. A work that contains no human authorship is not eligible in any Category,” the Academy says.

However, if the&nbsp;music features some elements of AI, it can be eligible for nominations if it meets the following requirements: "The human authorship component of the work submitted must be meaningful and more than de minimis; such human authorship component must be relevant to the category in which such work is entered (e.g., if the work is submitted in a songwriting category, there must be meaningful and more than de minimis human authorship in respect of the music and/or lyrics; if the work is submitted in a performance category, there must be meaningful and more than de minimis human authorship in respect of the performance); and the author(s) of any AI material incorporated into the work are not eligible to be nominees or Grammy recipients insofar as their contribution to the portion of the work that consists of such AI material is concerned. De minimis is defined as lacking significance or importance; so minor as to merit disregard."

Coincidentally, the new Grammy&nbsp;rule comes in the same week Paul McCartney&nbsp;revealed that&nbsp;he used AI to produce the "final Beatles song".

The Grammys also changed the&nbsp;requirements for its top award, i.e. Album of the Year. Earlier, any producer, songwriter, or featured artist on an album could earn a Grammy nomination for this category, even if the&nbsp;artist&nbsp;co-penned one&nbsp;track on a 10 or 12-track album. Now, the Recording Academy&nbsp;has announced that the music creators must be part of at least 20 per cent of an album to earn a nomination.

In 2021, the Academy announced that any songwriter or producer could earn a bid for the top award. While some championed the decision because&nbsp;now more artists&nbsp;could call themselves “Grammy-nominated”, many others criticised the change&nbsp;since it meant that several nominees&nbsp;could compete for the category.

Other small changes include:

	<li>Best improvised jazz solo has been renamed to best jazz performance.</li>
