Google on Monday dedicated its doodle to Govindappa Venkataswamy, an Indian ophthalmologist who dedicated his life for eradicating needless blindness.

Born on October 1, 1918, Venkataswamy was the founder of the largest provider of eye care in the world, Aravind Eye Hospitals.

The hospital which has seen over 55 million patients charges highly subsidised rates from most of its patients.

Venkataswamy also known as Dr V personally performed over 100,000 eye surgeries and has helped in developing the concept of eye camps.&nbsp;

He is popularly known for developing a high quality, high volume, low-cost service delivery model that has helped in restoring sight to millions of people.

Dr V was awarded the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 1973.&nbsp;

On may 15, 1570 the first ever&nbsp; modern atlas titled "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" (Theatre of the world) was published. Google Doodle today remembers the man who created the atlas - the legendary cartographer Abraham Ortelius.

Abraham Ortelius was born in Antwerp, modern-day Belgium, in 1527, and was raised by his uncle following his father's death.

Ortelius travelled widely across Europe, including with the&nbsp; renowned cartographer Gerardus Mercator, who is thought to have first inspired his passion for map-making.

After publishing his first map in 1564 -&nbsp;Typus Orbis Terrarum, an eight-leaved wall map of the world, he went on to become one of his era's foremost cartographers, acknowledged as one of the founders of the celebrated Netherlands school of cartography.

On May 20, 1570, Ortelius published the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum – Theatre of the World – the first modern atlas.

The atlas that had 53 maps in its first edition was all the more significant in 16th century when world maps helped in showing discoveries, as well as communicating the presumed shape of the world. The last edition of the atlas with 167 maps was published in 1622.

On Friday, Google honoured legendary classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai with a doodle to mark her 100th birth anniversary.&nbsp; 
 
The doodle, illustrated by Delhi-based illustrator Sudeepti Tucker, features Mrinalini with her signature parasol in the auditorium of the famous Darpana Academy of Performing Arts. The academy was founded by Mrinalini and her physicist husband Vikram Sarabhai back in 1949. The doodle aims to celebrate her technique, spirit and strength.&nbsp; 
 
Trained in Bharatanatyam under Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai and Kathakali under the legendary Guru Thakazhi Kunchu Kurup, she was one of the few dancers to have learned two distinct style of classical dance forms. Mrinalini was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Padma Shri in 1965 for her contribution to arts. 
 
Her institute in Ahmedabad is considered as one of the leading centres in training different forms of dance, drama, puppetry, and music. Mrinalini is known to have instructed over 18,000 students in Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. The centre now serves as a study centre of various art forms.&nbsp;

"In 1886, a young doctor stepped off a ship from America, eager to take up the role of a physician in charge of the female ward at Kolhapur's Albert Edward Hospital. Not only was she India's first female doctor, but she was only 19 years old at the time. Her name was Anandi Gopal Joshi, and her story is one of courage and perseverance," Google states on its blog.

Born in Kalyan, Maharashtra, Joshi was married at the age of nine but was encouraged by her husband to pursue her education in medicine. She went on to receive her medical degree from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, now known as Drexel University College of Medicine.

"Joshi's young life was tragically cut short when she died of tuberculosis before her 22nd birthday. However, her legacy and the path she paved for generations of women continues today. Interestingly, even a crater on Venus is named after her!" the blog adds.&nbsp;

Today's Google Doodle celebrates the 45th anniversary of the Chipko Movement dedicated to the cause of tree conservation and saying no to deforestation.&nbsp;

The doodle portrays a colourful design where a group of women are standing around a tree, representing their fight against deforestation which was the main objective of the movement.

The movement was initiated in the year 1973 and went on to become a starting point of nonviolent protests in the country.&nbsp;

Khan was born in a&nbsp;family of traditional Muslim musicians in Bhirung Raut Ki Gali, Dumraon, in what is now the eastern Indian state of Bihar, as the second son of Paigambar Baksh Khan and Mitthan. One of the most engrossing writers of the country,&nbsp;Kamala Surayya was a non-conformist and perhaps that&#39;s why Google chose to celebrate her life and work today with a doodle. The doodle by artist Manjit Thapp provides a window into the life of the poet.&nbsp; 
 
Born in Punnayurkulam, Thrissur in Kerala on 31 March 1934, to the former managing editor of Mathrubhoomi, VM Nair and Nalapat Balamani Amma, Kamala spent her childhood in Calcutta where her father was employed with Walford Transport Company.&nbsp; 
 
Owing to her literary lineage-her mother was a renowned poet herself while her father was an editor&nbsp;of a magazine, writing came naturally to her from a young age. Her great-uncle Nalapat Narayana Menon, a prominent writer himself, was a great influence on her and she took to poetry from an early age.&nbsp; 
 
She got married to Madhava Das, a banker at the young age of 15. Das encouraged her to write and she started writing in both Malayalam and English.&nbsp; 
 
Interestingly, it is on this day in 1976, that Kamala Das released her autobiography, &#39;My Story. Her life and work reflected certain boldness and shape-shifting quality. She wrote several genres and expressed herself in various languages.&nbsp; 
 
Her autobiography captured life from childhood to marriage and beyond. She initially began writing in English but simultaneously started translating it in Malayalam. She did face a lot of opposition from members of her family and people outside while publishing the book. But once the book released, most were stunned with the way she expressed herself in words and lauded her honesty.&nbsp; 
 
Honoured with Sahitya Academy Award in 1984, Kamala died in 2009.

Honoured with the Sahitya Akademi&nbsp;award, the Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan, Mahasweta Devi has worked for the rights and empowerment of the tribal people of West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Born in a family of literary parents, her father Manish Ghatak was also a well-known poet and novelist of Kallol movement. In fact, her uncle, his father&#39;s brother is noted filmmaker Rithwik Ghatak. Her mother, Dharitri Devi was also a writer and social worker.

Devi has written over 100 novels and 20 collections of short stories mainly in Bengali but many of her stories and novels have been translated into other languages as well.

Devi has also worked in the post office but was fired due to her communist leaning. She went on to do various type of jobs including selling soaps and writing letters in English for illiterate people.

Later she worked as journalist and writer during her time at Jadavpur, Kolkata-32 college in which she used to teach. She has worked for Lodha and Shabar, tribal communities of West Bengal and depicted the brutal oppression of tribal people and untouchables by potent, authoritarian upper caste landlords, lender and Bengal government officials.

She is known to have helped the noted writer Manoranjan Bypari to come into prominence as his initial writings were published in her journal and as prompted by her.

Mahasweta Devi died in 2016 &nbsp;from multiple organ failure in Kolkata at the age of 90.

Hailing from Raipur, today in Pakistan, Khorana did significant research on the order of nucleotides in nucleic&nbsp;acids which carry the genetic code of the cell that controls the cell&#39;s synthesis of proteins which helped&nbsp;him to win the Nobel prize.

Khorana served on the faculty of the University of British Columbia from 1952 to 1960 where he also initiated his Nobel Prize-winning work.

The biochemist also received the National Medal of science and co-directed the Institute for enzyme research.

Khorana was also elected as a foreign member of the Royal Society in 1978.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, DBT Department of Biotechnology of the Indian government and the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum jointly created the Khorana Program in 2007 with the mission to build &quot;seamless community&quot;&nbsp;of scientists, industrialists, and social entrepreneurs in the United States and India.

The program is focused on three objectives - providing graduate and undergraduate students with a transformative research experience, engaging partners in rural development and food, security, and facilitating public-private partnerships between the US&nbsp;and India.

Google has today dedicated the google doodle to Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa on his 113th birth anniversary.&nbsp;

Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa was the greatest Kannada medium writer of the 20th Century.

The great poet, playwright, Critic and thinker had immense love for his mother tongue.&nbsp;

He studied at the Mysore University in the 1920s, taught there for about three decades and then took over as the Vice-Chancellor of the University. He taught in the University in Kannada.

His contributions to Kannada literature earned him the prestigious Jnanpith Award and Karnataka Ratna. He was also honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan by the Indian government.&nbsp;

He has written the Karnataka State Anthem Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate.&nbsp;

Puttappa was born on 29 December 1904 and died in Mysore on 11 November 1994 at the age 89.&nbsp;

The doodle sees Ghalib, with his pen and paper, knitting his imaginations, with a backdrop of buildings of Mughal architecture.

Ghalib, born in Agra on December 1797, during the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah, was educated in Persian, Urdu and Turkish got and&nbsp;acquainted with language at an early age.&nbsp;

Ghalib started composing poetry at&nbsp;11 and was also a prominent letter writer.&nbsp;

One of the things Mirza Ghalib continued to write&nbsp;in his poems was the idea that life is an ongoing painful struggle which ends only with life itself.

He is famously known for his Urdu Ghazals and was considered the most popular and influential poets of the Urdu language. His honorific was Dabir-ul-Mulk, Najm-ud-Daula.&nbsp;

Most notably, he wrote several ghazals during his life, which have since been interpreted and sung in many different ways by different people.

Ghazal singers like Jagjit Singh, Mehdi Hassan, Abida Parveen, Farida Khanum, Tina Sani, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan have sung his ghazals, as well as singers from all over South Asia, have sung many of his ghazals.

He got married at the age of 13 to Umrao Begum, daughter of Nawab Ilahi Bakhsh and moved to Delhi thereafter.&nbsp;

He died on 15 February 1869 in Delhi and his house in Old Delhi has been converted into &quot;Ghalib Memorial&quot; also called &quot;Ghalib ki Haveli&quot;, which houses Ghalib&#39;s exhibitions.

Google on Sunday celebrates the 93rd birthday of legendary playback singer, Mohammed Rafi with a specially-curated doodle.

Born on December 24, 1924 in Punjab, Rafi is remembered as one of the most versatile singers of India, as his songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans.

Further, Rafi is known for his ability to mould his voice to the persona of the actor, lip-syncing the song on screen in the movie.Rafi is primarily noted for his songs in Hindi, over which he had a strong command.

He sang around 7,405 songs in many languages.

He sang in other Indian languages including Konkani, Bhojpuri, Odia, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada, Gujarati, Telugu, Magahi, Maithili and Urdu.Apart from Indian languages, he also sang songs in English, Farsi, Arabic, Sinhalese, Creole and Dutch.

Among his noteworthy numbers include &quot;Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho&quot;, &quot;Baharo Phool Barsao&quot;, &quot;Kya Hua Tera Wada&quot; and others.
