Google on Monday dedicated its doodle to Govindappa Venkataswamy, an Indian ophthalmologist who dedicated his life for eradicating needless blindness.

Born on October 1, 1918, Venkataswamy was the founder of the largest provider of eye care in the world, Aravind Eye Hospitals.

The hospital which has seen over 55 million patients charges highly subsidised rates from most of its patients.

Venkataswamy also known as Dr V personally performed over 100,000 eye surgeries and has helped in developing the concept of eye camps. 

He is popularly known for developing a high quality, high volume, low-cost service delivery model that has helped in restoring sight to millions of people.

Dr V was awarded the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 1973.
