A state branch of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has been classified as a "confirmed" extremist organisation, said Germany's internal intelligence agency on Tuesday (November 7). This clears way for the intelligence mechanism to put the state branch under "systematic" surveillance. AfD rides on the anti-migrant sentiment among the German public and has seen a spike in support.

Opinion polls suggest that AfD has overtaken the ruling coalition led by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. AfD is now second only to the Christian Democratic Union, the main opposition party.

The intelligence agency has justified designation of Saxony-Anhalt branch of AfD as an extremist organisation. The agency's unit in the state said that the decision about the designation was taken last month.

The Saxony-Anhalt region was part of erstwhile communist East Germany. This along with other regions which were part of Soviet-era nation are traditional support bases of AfD. Regions like Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia go to polls next year and AfD leads opinion polls in all these states.

Jochen Hollman, the chief of Germany internal intelligence agency unit in Saxony-Anhalt said that it had been keeping an eye on the party since January 2021.

"The state association not only continues to advocate anti-constitutional positions... but has also become so radicalised since the coronavirus pandemic that systematic monitoring using intelligence service resources is justified," said Hollen, as quoted by AFP.

The agency has numerous concerns about AfD's state branch which it said was violating the constitution. The agency has said that party members have frequently made racist, anti-Muslin and even anti-Semitic statements. Leading party members have used "demonising language" about migrants, says the agency.

The intelligence agency also added that AfD's state unit was attempting to "erode people's trust" in democratic system and institutions.

What happens now?

The classification of AfD's state unit as a "confirmed" extremist group, the intelligence setup can use more resources to keep an eye on them without restriction. This will enable the agency to gather information about party activities more effectively.

AFP cited Germany's federal agency for civic education which said that designating the party unit as an extremist group lowers legal barriers for intelligence agencies to use monitoring methods such as phone-tapping, using undercover agents and more.

Tesla, the electric vehicle pioneer, is reportedly gearing up to produce a more affordable electric car with a price tag of 25,000 euros (approximately $26,838) at its factory located near Berlin, a Reuters report said, citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter. The development signals a significant move for Tesla as it aims to promote wider adoption of its electric vehicles.

The source, who opted to remain unnamed, did not specify when production of the affordable model would commence. Tesla declined to provide official comments on the matter. In response to this news, Tesla's shares experienced a 3 per cent increase in pre-market trading in the United States at 0910 GMT.

The relatively high cost is impeding the widespread adoption of electric cars in Europe and the United States. Moreover, the cost of electric cars have been compounded by elevated interest rates. In the first half of 2023, the average retail price of an electric vehicle in Europe exceeded 65,000 euros ($69,000), as reported by automotive research firm JATO Dynamics. In contrast, the average price of an electric car in China was just over 31,000 euros ($33,000).

Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has been expressing his desire to develop a more affordable electric car. In September, insider sources revealed that Tesla has made significant progress in the development of an innovation that would enable the casting of nearly the entire underbody of electric vehicles in one piece. This advancement would lead to increased production efficiency and reduced costs.

Tesla's strategy to expand into the mass market is crucial in achieving its goal of delivering 20 million vehicles by 2030, setting it apart from competitors like Volkswagen, a company which has focused on preserving profit margins during the electric vehicle transition without setting specific delivery targets.

CEO Elon Musk recently visited the Tesla plant in Gruenheide, Germany, where he revealed plans to produce the 25,000-euro vehicle at the German plant, marking a significant development in the company's strategy. The Gruenheide plant currently manufactures the Model Y, which is the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe.

Tesla has intentions to double the manufacturing capacity of its German plant, with the goal of producing up to 1 million vehicles annually. The company has not released updated production figures since March when it announced the production of 5,000 vehicles per week, equivalent to approximately 250,000 vehicles annually.

Local authorities in Germany have requested additional information from Tesla regarding how their expansion plans align with conservation laws. A decision on whether to approve the expansion is pending, with no specific timeframe provided.

Furthermore, Tesla announced a four per cent wage increase for all employees, effective from November onwards. Production workers will also receive an additional 2,500 euros ($2,600) per year starting from February 2024, representing an 18 per cent pay increase over a one-to-one-and-a-half-year period. German union IG Metall had previously noted that Tesla's wages were approximately 20 per cent lower than those offered under collective bargaining agreements at other car manufacturers.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG, one of Europe's leading airline groups, has expressed optimism about its financial performance for the current year and beyond as strong travel demand continues to drive their earnings, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

The company reported that the strong travel demand experienced during the summer season has extended into the slower final months, with leisure travellers increasingly choosing more expensive seats.

According to a statement released on Thursday, Lufthansa expects its adjusted operating profit to exceed €2.6 billion ($2.8 billion) this year, surpassing analyst estimates. Furthermore, the company anticipates achieving its earnings margin target of at least 8 per cent by 2024.

Lufthansa highlighted the strength of Christmas season bookings and the ongoing trend of passengers upgrading to first and business class. While the cargo division's earnings dipped to just €1 million in the quarter due to an economic slowdown, overall ticket yields in its airline businesses remained 25 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels, which significantly boosted their profit.

Bloomberg quoted Lufthansa's CEO, Carsten Spohr, as saying, "Even though the geopolitical situation remains challenging, our booking outlook gives us reason to be positive - not only for a very good group result this year but also beyond." The company's strong performance is attributed to the sustained high demand for air travel, which has allowed them to recover from the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, concerns are emerging about the future of air travel demand, as households grapple with rising inflation, increased interest rates, and geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East. There have been signs that some travellers are starting to avoid bookings to nearby destinations due to these concerns.

Notably, Lufthansa has achieved an operating margin of 8.5 per cent so far this year, doubling the figure from the same period last year, which sets the company on course to achieve its long-term profitability goals by 2024.

Lufthansa's European competitors, British Airways' parent company IAG SA and Air France-KLM, also reported record third-quarter operating profits recently, driven by high demand for summer travel, particularly between Europe and North America. These airlines, however, expressed concerns about the impact of the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel on travel to the Middle East, with indications that some travellers are becoming more cautious.

Despite the positive outlook, Lufthansa is mindful of potential geopolitical and macroeconomic risks. The company has stated its commitment to preserving maximum flexibility to adapt its plans if necessary.

Lufthansa continues to expand, as it recently announced plans to hire an additional 2,000 pilots. Moreover, the company is considering an order of 40 regional aircraft, with a decision pending between the Airbus A220s or Embraer E2s, as well as another 40 Airbus A320neos.

In addition, Lufthansa reiterated its intention to seek approval from the European Commission to acquire a 41 per cent stake in Italy's ITA Airways by early 2024, a process that has faced regulatory scrutiny. The company is also in discussions regarding the potential sale of a stake in its Lufthansa Technik maintenance division and expects to make a decision on whether to proceed by the end of the year.

A technical issue was also revealed by Lufthansa, affecting 64 of its A320neos due to problems with their Pratt and Whitney engines. As a result, around 20 aircraft will be unavailable on any given day in 2024. Pratt, which is owned by RTX Corp., has acknowledged that approximately 3,000 jet engines worldwide require inspections due to potentially flawed components made with contaminated metal powder. This issue is expected to ground hundreds of A320neo aircraft over the next three years, with repair times ranging from 250 to 300 days.

A recent survey of first- and second-generation Black immigrants across 13 European Union countries has brought to light a troubling increase in racism, with Germany, Austria, and Finland reporting the highest rates of discrimination and harassment.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) conducted the survey, showing that within six years since the previous study, the percentage of respondents who reported experiencing racial discrimination in the past 12 months had risen by 10 points to reach 34 per cent.

Austrian and German stats

In Austria and Germany, the proportion was a concerning 64 per cent, nearly double the previous level of 33% in Germany and significantly higher than the 42 per cent recorded in Austria six years earlier. Finland followed closely with 54% reporting racial discrimination.

FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty told Reuters that the lack of improvement since the last survey was shocking, highlighting that people of African descent face increasing discrimination solely due to the colour of their skin.

The survey also examined respondents who reported feeling racially discriminated against over the past five years, which had risen to 45 per cent across the 13 countries surveyed, marking a six-point increase from the previous study. The top three countries remained the same, with Germany reporting the highest rate at 76 per cent.

The extensive poll, conducted by Ipsos for the FRA, involved 16,124 immigrants and their descendants across 15 countries. The survey took place between October 2021 and September 2022 and will produce several reports on other ethnic minorities and Muslims. The current report, titled "Being Black in the EU," is the first to be published from this broader survey, focusing on 6,752 individuals born in sub-Saharan Africa or with at least one parent born there residing in 13 EU countries.

The proportion of respondents who reported experiencing racist harassment over the past five years remained unchanged at 30 per cent compared to six years earlier. Germany reported the highest national rate at 54 per cent, followed by Finland and Austria. In contrast, Portugal and Sweden had the lowest harassment rates and, along with Poland, reported the lowest levels of racial discrimination according to respondents.

The FRA report included a set of recommendations for EU member states, urging them to enforce anti-discrimination legislation rigorously and consider racial bias as an aggravating circumstance when determining penalties for crimes.

Germany arrests man on suspicion of planning an attack on ‘pro-Israel demonstration’: Reports

Several people went missing after collision between two freight ships in North Sea near German island of Heligoland, said German authorities on Tuesday (Oct 24).

The collision between the two vessels, named Polesie and Verity, took place around 0300 GMT on Tuesday 12 nautical miles (22 kilometres) southwest of Heligoland, said German Central Command for Maritime Emergencies (CCME). The collision may have resulted in sinking of the Verity.

The central command said that one person was rescued from the water and has been receiving medical treatment. Several others are missing.

A rescue cruiser, police boats, a sensor aircraft along with a helicopter have been pressed into the rescue effort. The authorities said that the Polesie, carrying 22 passengers is still waterborne.

The Polesie was sailing to La Coruna (Spain) from Hambutg (Germany).

The Verity was going from Bremen (Germany) to Immingham (England). It was the smaller vessel between the two ships with a length of 91 metres (about 300 feet). The Polesie is 190 metres long.

According to the German news outlet The Bild, a total of six people are missing.

"The emergency services are doing everything they can to rescue the missing people," German Transport Minister Volker Wissing said in a statement.

"My thoughts are with the crew members, their relatives and the rescue teams who have been in action since early this morning."

The German authorities have said that a P&O cruise ship that was in the area, the IONA has also been roped in for rescue effort.

"On board the IONA, people can also receive medical care; there are doctors on board," they said.

Difficult weather conditions prevailed while the search was going on. The winds were of strength six on the Beaufort scale and waves reached as high as three metres.

At least three people have been killed after parts of eastern Scotland witnessed severe flooding on Friday (Oct 20) due to storm Babet which brought torrential rain and high-speed winds leaving thousands of homes without power. Amber and yellow weather warnings were issued across the United Kingdom.

At least three killed in Scotland

According to police, the body of a 57-year-old woman had been recovered after she was swept into a river in the northeast part of Scotland’s Angus County, on Thursday afternoon.

A 56-year-old man was also killed in the same county after a falling tree hit the vehicle he was driving later in the evening.

Another man in his 60s died after his vehicle got caught in the fast-flowing flood water in the central English county of Shropshire.

Storm Babet’s impact

A Boeing 737-800 skidded off the runway at Leeds Bradford airport in northern England while trying to land amid strong winds. However, local emergency services said there were no reported injuries.

“Angus is in the middle of a very serious emergency. Flooding is unprecedented,” said Angus Council, in a statement, adding that “Conditions will continue to deteriorate for some time.”

Flood defences in northeast Scotland’s town of Brechin, as per county officials breached at around 0300 GMT on Friday, and the level of a river rose around 4.4 metres above normal.

Scottish leader Humza Yousaf warned that he could not “stress how dangerous” conditions were, particularly in Brechin. Rescue operations are also underway as hundreds of homes were cut off by floodwater and some areas in the region were only accessible via boat.

Local officials in Angus had asked people to evacuate from more than 400 homes on Thursday. “It’s just absolutely horrendous. I’ve never seen anything like it,” said local councillor Jill Scott, adding that hundreds of homes have been flooded and people are trapped.

“Some have been stuck there for hours,” said Scott, adding that boats are trying to get to them but have failed so far since the current is “too strong.”

‘Exception rainfall’

Britain’s national weather forecaster, the Met Office, issued its rare red alert and warned parts of eastern Scotland to brace for “exceptional rainfall” of up to 8.6 inches on Friday and Saturday.

The warning was also extended until 2259 GMT on Saturday. “This is an exceptional event, and we are likely to continue to see significant impacts with the potential for further flooding,” said Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page.

The Met Office has also issued amber and yellow weather warnings in place for much of England.

Scandinavia braces for storm Babet

Scandinavian countries braced for the storm’s arrival which has already prompted cancellation of flights and ferries across Northern Europe, with the strongest winds expected overnight into Saturday.

The Copenhagen Airport in Denmark said as many as 77 flights to and from the city have been cancelled. Several ferry operators suspended services between Denmark and Germany as well as Sweden and Germany and Sweden and Poland, reported AFP.

Germany's interior minister Nancy Faeser said that those backing Hamas must be deported from the country.

"If we are able to deport Hamas supporters, we must do this," Faeser reportedly said after speaking with officials at the Federal Criminal Police Office. "Our security authorities have currently placed an even stronger focus on the Islamist scene," Faeser added.

The minister also spoke of the recent killings in Brussels, indicating that there is a rise in tensions in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Worldwide protests

There are rallies being organised all across the world with some supporting Israelis while others backing Palestinians and there is a widespread concern over heightened antisemitism in Germany.

Recently, there was an attempted attack on a Berlin synagogue with petrol bombs. Clashes between pro-Palestinian protesters and police also erupted in Berlin and other cities.

As the war between Israel and Hamas is nearly in its third week, the US also issued a worldwide caution for American citizens who are traveling overseas. FBI alerted saying that there is a potential for terrorist attack on Jewish and Muslim Americans.

In the same vein, the German minister Faeser made an appeal to citizens to inform authorities if they see any ongoing "propaganda" supporting Hamas. Social media platforms have also come under the scrutiny of regulators for failing to tackle the menace of disinformation being propagated on them against the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war.

Germany: Scholz promises action after Molotovs hurled at synagogue

At least seven people were killed and over a dozen people were injured after a van purportedly carrying migrants overturned in the southern German state of Bavaria, on Friday (Oct 13). The van was said to be packed with migrants when it crashed at a highway junction after the driver allegedly accelerated to avoid a police check, said the local officials.

What do we know about the incident?

According to the German police, a police patrol noticed the overloaded vehicle on the A94 highway east of Munich at about 3:15 am (local time) and tried to stop it, however, the driver did not slow down and accelerated to 180 kmph.

Subsequently, the driver lost control of the van – which had Austrian licence plates – when took the turn to get off the highway and the van overturned, hurling several of the 23 people out of the vehicle, said the police.

“The driver and suspected people smuggler survived and is among those injured,” said the police spokesperson Stefan Sonntag.

The van was designed to carry nine people and it would not have been possible for many of the people on board the vehicle to use seat belts, according to German news agency dpa.

Around 60 firefighters, some 90 rescue workers, 12 emergency doctors and two crisis intervention teams were deployed at the site of the crash in what police called a “very stressful operation.”

In 2023, Germany witnessed a 74 per cent rise in the number of migrants applying for asylum in the country and registered 14,701 illegal border crossings, in August.

Germany: At least seven killed, 16 injured after suspected migrant-smuggling car crash

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on Thursday (Oct 12), said that without Iran's solid backing, Palestinian militant group Hamas would not have been able to launch its "unprecedented" attacks on Israel.

"While we have no firm proof that Iran operationally supported this cowardly attack, it is clear to us all that without Iranian support, Hamas would never have been able to launch this unprecedented attack," he said.

"The jubilant statements from the top of the Iranian regime and some other government officials in the region are abhorrent. The leadership in Tehran shows its true colours without shame, and thereby confirms its role in Gaza."

Scholz, during his special address to the German Parliament, said that his government would ban fundraising, activities, and organisations supporting the Hamas militant group in Germany.

He also announced a ban on the Samidoun association, which he said was celebrating the surprise attack by the militant group.

"The federal interior ministry will ban Hamas from operating in Germany. An association like Samidoun, whose members celebrate the most brutal acts of terror on the open street, will be banned in Germany," Scholz said in a speech to parliament.

Scholz condemned Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas for his silence on the attacks calling it "shameful".

"Where is the clear condemnation of the terrorist violence by the autonomous (Palestinian) Authority and by its president, Mahmoud Abbas?" he said. "Their silence is shameful."

Germany on Tuesday (Oct 10) announced an additional military aid of 1 billion euro (USD 1.1 billion) for Ukraine as it takes steps to hasten aid and weapons delivery ahead of winter.

The "winter package" comprises of an extra Patriot air defence system as it was agreed between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week.

In addition to this, Berlin will also send two more IRIS-T missile systems this month. The missile system is capable of short- and medium-range protection, according to a statement from the defence ministry.

The IRIS-T system is highly sought after by Ukraine for shooting down Russian drones and missiles.

In the coming weeks, Ukraine will also receive 10 more Leopard tanks and additional Gepard anti-aircraft guns in addition to extra ammunition and vehicles.

"With this new 'winter package,' we are further enhancing the readiness of the Ukrainian armed forces in the coming months," Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said in the statement.

Zelensky said he was grateful to Germany for the latest aid package.

"As winter approaches, this is exactly the support we need and the one we discussed with (Chancellor Olaf Scholz) in Granada," he said in a social media post.

The German ministry, however, did not say when exactly would the Patriot system be delivered.

But training for Ukrainian soldiers on how to use the advanced surface-to-air missile system "will commence in the coming weeks".

The ministry added that the Patriot system will come from the Bundeswehr's own stocks.

Aside from the control unit and radar equipment, the system will come with eight launchers and an estimated 60 guided missiles.

The new air defence package "has a value of around one billion euros," Pistorius said.

The statement added that the German government will spend about 20 million euros for Ukraine's spcial forces "including vehicles, weapons and personal equipment."

Germany ramped up its support for Ukraine, after some initial hesitation following Russian invasion in February 2022.

The country is now the second-biggest supplier of military assistance to Kyiv after the United States.

The newest arms package was unveiled on the eve of another round of talks in Brussels where Kyiv's international allies will discuss the coordination of military aid for Ukraine.

As winter approaches, Germany steps up weapons delivery to Ukraine

All flights at the Hamburg Airport in Germany were suspended for around 90 minutes on Monday (Oct 9) after receiving a "credible threat" to a flight coming from Iran.

However, the Hamburg airport, which is Germany’s fifth largest with around 11 million passengers a year, announced that it had resumed service. The airport said on its website that the flight service has been resumed.

"There may still be flight delays," the website noted as earlier, all takeoffs and landings were stopped over the threat received by email.

A report by the New York Times mentioned that the plane, which faced the threat, landed safely and was parked in an isolated section of the airport.

The German air force said on its X social media account that it escorted the plane after it entered German airspace east of Berlin due to a bomb threat.

The police spokesperson told the news agency Reuters that they interviewed passengers, which is normal procedure when a threat is classified as serious.

NYT report added that all 198 passengers and 16 crew members left the plane without incident.

As quoted, Marcus Henschel, who is a spokesman for the federal police at the airport, said the local police apparently took all those on board to an isolated gate and subjected them to vigorous security screenings.

Henschel said that the threat "was determined to be credible and so we initiated the appropriate response".

In a phone interview with the news outlet, Henschel said that the threat against the plane came in an email sent to several recipients, including the federal police at the airport, on Monday.

The spokesperson also told Reuters that no takeoffs or landings were possible because the airport fire brigade was involved with the search.

The news came on the first day of a special meeting of the German and French governments in Hamburg, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Emmanuel Macron both attending.

Also read: 'Goodbye to my wife India': Israeli journalist called up to defend nation amid war The German air force said on its X social media account that it escorted the plane after it entered German airspace east of Berlin due to a bomb threat. The spokesperson also told Reuters that no takeoffs or landings were possible because the airport fire brigade was involved with the search. The news came on the first day of a special meeting of the German and French governments in Hamburg, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Emmanuel Macron both attending. Israel-Hamas war: Several foreign nationals killed, abducted amid attacks on Israel

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's troubled coalition suffered heavy losses in two state elections Sunday seen as a crucial test halfway through its term, while the resurgent far right made new gains.

All three parties in the coalition -- Scholz's centre-left SPD, the Greens and the liberal FDP -- lost ground in southern Bavaria, the country's biggest state, and western Hesse, according to vote projections.

The main conservative opposition won in both states, as expected, while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) made strong gains, ringing alarm bells anew about its growing popularity.

Nearly 14 million people were eligible to vote in the states, almost one in five of Germany's electorate. The polls were seen as a crucial indicator of the population's mood, with surging immigration and economic woes among key topics.

The poor results triggered soul-searching in Scholz's coalition, with senior figures acknowledging a new approach was needed.

The elections were a "signal for the three (coalition) parties that a different pace is needed when it comes to solving the problems of the citizens in this country", SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil told broadcaster ARD.

In contrast, there was cause for celebration for the anti-immigration AfD. Co-leader Alice Weidel declared the party was "on the right track", describing the polls as a "lesson for the (coalition) and a vote for change".

The elections came after a torrid two years for Scholz's government, which has had to contend with Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis, which plunged Germany into recession.

Adding to the problems, the chancellor's coalition has been consumed by bitter infighting on issues ranging from climate laws to spending cuts.

Not helping the cause of the SPD and its coalition partners, both states are conservative strongholds. Hesse had been ruled for 24 years by the main opposition CDU and Bavaria since 1957 by the CSU, headed by Markus Soeder.

- Latest far-right win -

The SPD had sought to gain ground in Hesse by fielding a heavyweight to run for state premier, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.

But the party won just 15 per cent of the vote, almost five percentage points below its last result in 2018, according to the latest projections late Sunday from ARD.

The CDU maintained its first place in Hesse and extended its lead by over seven points to 34.5 per cent, the projection showed.

State premier Boris Rhein is thus set to retain his job, while Faeser is left facing questions about her political future.

The AfD looked to have gained about five percentage points in both Bavaria and Hesse, building on recent local poll wins.

While it does not look likely to enter government in either state -- its strongholds are in eastern Germany -- analysts said it showed the party had broad appeal.

"There can no longer be any talk of (the AfD) being merely an east German regional party," said the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

The AfD is traditionally an anti-immigration party but has also focused on attacking the coalition's unpopular climate policies, driven by the Greens. Critics argue they could unduly burden households.

Immigration was also a central theme at the polls as Germany -- like elsewhere in Europe -- faces a surge of new arrivals, reviving memories of a major influx in 2015.

The victory of the CSU -- the sister party of the CDU -- in Bavaria was widely expected and state premier Soeder will retain his post.

But with vote projections showing the party's worst result for decades, it could deal a blow to his ambitions to one day stand as a chancellor candidate.

Ahead of the vote, the state's governing coalition was rocked by a scandal when Soeder's deputy, Hubert Aiwanger, admitted to possessing Nazi pamphlets that were found in the schoolbag he used as a teenager in the late 1980s.

But Aiwanger, leader of junior coalition partner the Free Voters, managed to hang on to his job and his party increased its share of the vote after he claimed he was the victim of a "witch hunt".

In contrast, the parties from Scholz's coalition lost support in Bavaria and the FDP fell below the threshold to get into the state parliament.

Final results are due later Sunday.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition deals with mid-term poll blow, far right gains

Germany debated on Sunday whether it should stop aid to Palestinians following the biggest attack on Israel in years by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, with the government saying it was reviewing the way it spent development funds in the region.

Development Minister Svenja Schulze of the ruling centre-left Social Democrats said the government had always been careful to check that the money was only used for peaceful ends.

"But these attacks on Israel mark a terrible fracture," she said. "We will now review our entire engagement for the Palestinian territories."

Germany would discuss with Israel how development projects in the region could best be served, and coordinate with international partners, said the minister.

Some German lawmakers, from the opposition conservatives in particular, called for an end to the aid.

"All of Europe, all 27 states, must now say: we need a new start and we will no longer finance terrorists," said Armin Laschet, chancellor candidate for the conservatives at the last federal election, calling for an end to EU cooperation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in the West Bank.

But pushback came from the opposition Left party and the Greens, junior partner in the federal coalition.

Hamas, and not all Palestinians, were responsible for the attack, said Gregor Gysi, a prominent member of the Left party.

The commissioner for humanitarian assistance Luise Amtsberg in the Greens-run foreign ministry said that the government did not finance the Palestinian Authority but rather people who were suffering.

"In 2023 the foreign ministry distributed 72 million euros of humanitarian aid in the Palestinian territories through international organisations and the United Nations," she said.

"These funds above all gave suffering people in the Palestinian territories access to food provisions and health care."

The German antitrust body has secured a major win against a big tech firm. Alphabet's Google has agreed to change its user data practices to end an antitrust investigation aimed at curbing its data-driven market power. He added that this will not only protect the users' right to determine the use of their data but also curb Google’s data-driven market power.

Google settles German antitrust probe

Alphabet subsidiary Google has reached an agreement to revamp its user data practices, marking the end of a German antitrust investigation aimed at curbing the tech giant's data-driven market dominance, the German cartel office announced on Thursday.

The German antitrust watchdog had issued a statement of objections to Google in January, expressing concerns over the company's data processing terms. It argued that users were not provided with sufficient options regarding the extensive processing of their data across Google's various services.

Tech giants like Google rely heavily on selling targeted advertising, a lucrative business model driven by the vast amounts of user data they accumulate. This model has come under regulatory scrutiny worldwide.

The German regulator noted that Google's commitments would empower users with more control over how their data is utilised across the company's platforms.

Reuters cited Andreas Mundt, President of the cartel office, who emphasised the significance of this development, stating, "In the future, users of Google services will have a much better choice as to what happens to their data, how Google can use them and whether their data may be used across services. This not only protects the users' right to determine the use of their data, but also curbs Google's data-driven market power."

Google's commitment extends to over 25 other services, including Gmail, Google News, Assistant, Contacts, and Google TV. However, it does not encompass Google Shopping, Google Play, Google Maps, Google Search, YouTube, Google Android, Google Chrome, and Google's online advertising services. These services fall under the jurisdiction of a new EU legislation known as the Digital Markets Act, which imposes similar obligations.

The German competition authority has intensified its scrutiny of major tech companies since it gained expanded powers, known as Section 19a GWB, in 2021. These powers empower the authority to investigate and prohibit certain practices by companies deemed to possess paramount significance and cross-market influence.

This newfound authority has led to investigations into other tech giants, including Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Apple.

An employee at a German museum reportedly stole and auctioned off at least three artworks to pay off his debts and purchase luxury goods. In one case, he swapped out a painting with a fake one and sold the original by claiming it belonged to his grandparents.

The 30-year-old man, who worked at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, has now been convicted of stealing three artworks and ordered to pay back more than $64,200 to the museum. He was also handed a 21-month suspended sentence, meaning he won’t have to go to jail.

Munich District Court said the sentence took into account his “genuine remorse.” “He said he acted without thinking,” read the court ruling. “He can no longer explain his behavior today,” it added.

What paintings did he steal?

The man, whose details authorities have not provided owing to strict privacy laws, worked with the museum from May 2016 to April 2018.

He first stole “Das Märchen vom Froschkönig” (The Tale of the Frog Prince) by Franz von Stuck and replaced it with a fake one. Then, he auctioned it off to a Swiss gallery for $74,000 and received almost $52,000 in cash.

He had claimed the painting was owned by his grandparents or great-grandparents.

He also stole three more paintings from the museum but managed to sell only two of them. Those were “Die Weinprüfung” (The Wine Test) by Eduard von Grützner and “Zwei Mädchen beim Holzsammeln im Gebirge” (Two Girls Collecting Wood in the Mountains) by Franz von Defregger.

The sale further gave him more than $12,000.

Used money for a luxurious lifestyle
