In the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, people who are seeking to become naturalised citizens will now have to confirm not only verbally but in writing that they “recognise Israel’s right to exist”, reported the news agency Deutsche Welle (DW). And now the state's&nbsp;minister is urging all 15 German states to adopt similar rules.

<h2>‘Commitment to Israel’s right to exist’</h2>

Speaking about the new measure, on Wednesday (Dec 6), ahead of the meeting of state and federal interior ministers, Saxony-Anhalt Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang, a member of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union party, called for similar measures across Germany.&nbsp;

Her ministry had sent a decree to all Saxony-Anhalt municipalities informing them of the policy in late November.&nbsp;

The decree asks all officials to pay close attention if an applicant exhibits antisemitic attitudes and states that “obtaining German citizenship requires a commitment to Israel’s right to exist.”

The applicants would also be asked to confirm in writing that they “recognize Israel’s right to exist and condemn any efforts directed against the existence of the State of Israel.”

The Saxony-Anhalt state interior ministry, in a letter to the local authorities, reportedly said naturalisation should be denied if the person engages in activities which would affect Germany’s liberal democratic order as outlined in the country’s Basic Law – which also includes denial of Israel’s right to exist and antisemitism.&nbsp;

The local officials have also been instructed to deny an application if the individual refuses to sign the declaration and make a note of the refusal for future reference.&nbsp;

However, the state regulation is yet to be debated in the Bundestag or German parliament. According to reports, some experts have argued that a written statement does not really confirm if a person is antisemitic or not.&nbsp;

Additionally, critics have also questioned the point of having the written statement as applicants are already required to sign their support of the constitution which includes these measures.&nbsp;

The proposed measure by the eastern German state comes months after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched one of the deadliest attacks against Israel on October 7.&nbsp;

Israel has since retaliated with constant bombardment and a group operation in Gaza. Amid mounting death toll in the Palestinian enclave which according to the Hamas-run government crossed 17,000, Israel is also garnering criticism from across the world.&nbsp;

Germany's populist right-wing party, the alternative for Germany party, has gained a significant lead over its rivals. The AFD has more than 70 seats in the national parliament and is a serious electoral contender. In fact, it is establishing itself as the strongest political force across the country's east.

A recent survey conducted by the German Chamber of Commerce in China reveals that nearly half of German companies operating in China are adopting measures to mitigate risks associated with doing business in the country, largely attributed to escalating geopolitical tensions, Reuters reported. &nbsp;

The survey, which encompassed 566 companies between September 5 and October 6, indicates a significant shift in strategy, with firms actively building supply chains independent of China, relocating some operations, and exploring markets elsewhere in Asia.&nbsp;

According to the survey, 83 per cent of companies identified geopolitical tensions as the primary reason for their risk mitigation measures. Additionally, 45 per cent and 24 per cent attributed their actions to China's economic slowdown and a greater emphasis on self-reliance, respectively. &nbsp;

The survey further highlights the ripple effect of this risk mitigation strategy on other countries in Asia. Approximately 57.5 per cent of surveyed companies expressed their intention to invest more in India, followed by 37.9 per cent in Vietnam, 30.1 per cent in Thailand, 23.3 per cent in Malaysia, and 20.1 per cent in Singapore. &nbsp;

The survey's release comes five months after the German government unveiled a strategy aimed at de-risking the country's economic relationship with China, its largest trade partner. The findings align with earlier reports by Reuters, providing empirical evidence of German firms strategically reducing their dependence on China amid geopolitical concerns. &nbsp;

Western countries are increasingly adopting risk mitigation strategies in response to China's assertive stance in various regions, including its growing influence over Taiwan and the South China Sea.&nbsp;

While German companies are diversifying to reduce risk, the survey also reveals that 54 per cent of the firms surveyed expressed a desire to further invest in China. This figure is slightly up from 51 per cent the previous year, suggesting that a significant portion of German companies remains committed to localising production in China. Economists speculate that such investments may act as a shield against potential repercussions stemming from geopolitical disputes.&nbsp;

The UK is grappling with a prolonged economic downturn, as highlighted by a recent study from the resolution foundation and the London School of Economics (L.S.E). The report reveals a stark reality: fifteen years of economic stagnation have left the average UK household £8,300 ($10,550) poorer compared to counterparts in nations like France and Germany.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck on Sunday cancelled a planned trip to the Middle East to focus on talks over a hole in Germany's 2024 budget and said he was "very optimistic" a solution would be found. The economy minister was due to fly to Dubai on Monday evening to attend COP28 and then to Oman, Israel and Saudi Arabia but was asked by the chancellor to postpone the trip, a spokesperson said.

Iran hit back at the UK, France, and Germany for jointly condemning its recent missile advances, specifically the unveiling of the Fattah-2 ballistic missile, which Tehran says is "hypersonic."&nbsp;

In a joint statement, the E3 countries expressed concern and said, "Iran continues to develop its missile programme despite repeated international calls to halt it, and after years of disregarding UN restrictions."

The Fattah-2, equipped with an advanced warhead and hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), was showcased at the Ashura Aerospace Science and Technology University in Tehran on November 19.

Fattah, translating to "conquer" in Farsi, represents an advanced iteration of its initial domestically produced hypersonic ballistic missile, also named "Fattah".

The new version boasts several notable features. It's HGV warhead is capable of maneuvering and gliding at incredibly high speeds, capable of evading air defence systems.

Propelled by a liquid-fuel rocket propellant, the precision-guided two-stage missile exhibits a striking range of 1500 kilometres. It also achieves a velocity of Mach 15, equating to 15 times the speed of sound, equivalent to 18522 kilometres per hour, as per reports.&nbsp;

The lifting of sanctions, reports say, allows Iran to sell its drones, ballistic missiles, and related technologies, potentially generating revenue for supporting militant and terror proxies in the Middle East.

In response, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, dismissed the E3 statement as misleading, politically motivated, and lacking legal grounding.

In a reflection of the ongoing economic challenges, Germany has witnessed a rise in unemployment numbers in November, aligning with analysts' expectations, according to figures released by the Federal Labour Office. <o:p></o:p>

Reuters reported that the seasonally adjusted data revealed an increase of 22,000 people out of work, bringing the total to 2.702 million.

Andrea Nahles, chairwoman of the Federal Employment Agency, commented on the impact of the economic downturn on the German labour market, stating, "The economic downturn continues to leave its mark on the German labour market."<o:p></o:p>

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Germany edged up from 5.8 per cent in October to 5.9 per cent in November. This uptick in unemployment coincides with a decline in job openings, with 733,000 positions available—a decrease of 90,000 compared to the previous year.

According to Reuters, Nahles emphasised the modest growth in employment and noted a simultaneous decrease in labour demand. "Employment is only growing slightly and labour demand is still declining," she said.<o:p></o:p>

The Ifo employment barometer revealed a dip in the willingness of German companies to hire new staff in November. <o:p></o:p>

Klaus Wohlrabe, head of surveys at Ifo, commented on the cautious approach of businesses, saying, "With a solid foundation for recovery still not in sight, companies are putting off hiring new staff."

This sentiment aligns with the broader trend of companies hesitating to expand their workforce amid economic uncertainties, contributing to the challenges faced by the German job market.<o:p></o:p>

Alexander&nbsp;Zverev&nbsp;has been ordered by a Berlin&nbsp;court&nbsp;to&nbsp;pay&nbsp;an undisclosed&nbsp;fine&nbsp;for&nbsp; physically abusing the mother of his child, the&nbsp;German&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;player's lawyers said, adding that he would contest the&nbsp;court&nbsp;order. The Guardian reported that the Tiergarten District&nbsp;Court&nbsp;in Berlin&nbsp;fined&nbsp;Zverev&nbsp;450,000 euros ($476,000). In January, the Association of&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Professionals (ATP) closed an investigation that was launched after another ex-girlfriend,&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;player Olga Sharypova, accused&nbsp;Zverev&nbsp;of domestic&nbsp;abuse. The ATP cited insufficient evidence as its reason for dropping the&nbsp;case.

The pair had a daughter in 2021, though by that time they were no longer together. The Guardian reported that the Tiergarten District Court in Berlin fined Zverev 450,000 euros ($476,000). In January, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) closed an investigation that was launched after another ex-girlfriend, tennis player Olga Sharypova, accused Zverev of domestic abuse. The ATP cited insufficient evidence as its reason for dropping the case. Stay indoors, German authorities tell people amid deadly winter as extreme weather kills two

United States and Germany are reportedly nudging Ukraine to end its war with Russia, German media reported quoting sources, indicating that “war fatigue” and economic problems are making difficult for the NATO allies to back Kyiv.

German tabloid BILD reported that during talks between United States President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in March at the Roosevelt Room, both had agreed to deliberately limit arm supplies to Ukraine and put indirect pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to come to the peace talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

<h2>'Appropriate amount' of weapons to Ukraine&nbsp;</h2>

The tabloid, quoting an unnamed official, reported that both US and Germany, two primary military donors to Ukraine, intend to supply just an “appropriate amount” of weapons so that Ukraine can maintain its lead and have sufficient room for peace negotiation, but just not enough to reclaim its land.

The German federal government has now set itself the main goal of putting Ukraine in a “strategically good negotiating position,” BILD said.

“The country should negotiate with (Russian dictator) Vladimir Putin's regime about its ‘sovereignty and territorial integrity.’ The White House and the Chancellery are coordinating on this,” government sources told BILD.

Berlin and Washington expect that if Kyiv and Moscow refuse to hold formal negotiations, the issue will remain frozen, and there will be no official accord.

“Zelensky&nbsp;should come to the realisation that things cannot go on like this,” a German government insider told BILD.

<h2>If peace talks fail, then Plan B</h2>

However, if limiting weapon supplies fails to enable Ukraine with peace talks, the source told BILD that US and Germany have a “Plan B” in place.

“What Berlin and Washington are striving for as an alternative to negotiations is a frozen conflict, without agreement between the conflicting parties,” the source said.

US, Germany forcing Ukraine to end war with Russia and ready to accept new boundary: Report

The Dutch defence ministry said on Thursday (Nov 23) that the human remains found in the wreckage of a British World War II bomber that crashed into the IJsselmeer have been identified.&nbsp;

British airmen Arthur Smart, Raymond Moore and Charles Sprack can be laid to rest as these last three missing airmen have been identified 80 years after they were shot down by the Germans.&nbsp;

The ministry said that the Lancaster crashed in the IJsselmeer in the early morning of June 13, 1943, after a bombing flight in the Ruhr area. It was on its way home from a mission over Bochem in Germany.&nbsp;

The ministry statement mentioned that four crew members washed up on the shores and were buried in Stavoren, Workum and Hindeloopen. However, there was no trace of the three mentioned officers until now.&nbsp;

Their remains, which have been identified by laboratory research in Soesterberg, were found during the recovery operation.&nbsp;

The ministry said that the defence aircraft recovery team carried out the operation between September 5 and October 6, at the request of the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân.

The statement added, "In addition to remains of kite equipment and clothing, the recovery team found 2 silver-plated cigarette cases. It bore the initials of Arthur Smart and Edward Moore. These personal belongings are returned to their families."&nbsp;

As quoted by The Guardian, Johan Graas, of the Stichting Aircraft Recovery Group, said, "It is good news that all three have been identified and amazing that the cigarette cases of Smart and Moore were found."&nbsp;

"The goal of our foundation is to give men like them an official grave, men who gave their lives for our freedom. Alas, it has taken many years," added Graas.

The ministry statement also shared details about the wreckage site as it said that during World War II, almost 6,000 Allied and German aircraft were lost in the Netherlands.&nbsp;

It is very likely that the remains of missing crew members are still present at the wreckage sites at around 30 to 50 places in the Netherlands.&nbsp;

Germany on Thursday (Nov 23) conducted raids in the homes of supporters and members of government-banned Hamas and another Palestinian organisation as well as some far-right groups.

"We are carrying out action against radical Islamists. By banning Hamas and Samidoun in Germany, we have sent a clear signal that we will not tolerate any apology or support for Hamas's barbaric terror against Israel," said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.

"Islamists and ant-Semites must not feel safe anywhere," she added.

The interior ministry said 15 properties have been raided since 6:00 am (local time).

On November 2, Germany announced a ban on Hamas and Samidoun. There are nearly 450 Hamas members in the country, as per the official figures.

Germany: Raids target people linked to Hamas, far-right, Palestinian groups

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said Tuesday his side have an "unbelievable amount of work to do" six months from hosting Euro 2024 after falling to a 2-0 friendly defeat against Austria in Vienna.

Germany fell behind to a Marcel Sabitzer goal in the first half and then lost Leroy Sane early in the second to a red card, the Bayern Munich winger pushing Austria defender Phillipp Mwene in the face and forcing him to the ground.&nbsp;

Christoph Baumgartner then scored a second for Austria as Nagelsmann's side struggled to fight back with 10 men.&nbsp;

"We're not playing freely. We've an unbelievable amount of work to do in each position," Nagelsmann told German broadcaster ZDF.

"We need to accept the situation but we can't fall into the role of being victims."

Nagelsmann said his side was "a really well-functioning group at training, but it's not transferring onto the pitch".

"We're missing some self-confidence, which is not a surprise when you see the past few months."&nbsp;

Germany have now won just three of 11 games since the four-time World Cup winners' embarrassing group-stage exit in Qatar a year ago.&nbsp;

Captain Ilkay Gundogan lamented his side's "homemade" mistakes, saying things "couldn't be worse" before Euro 2024.

"Doing it this way, we won't be successful," he admitted, adding that his team were lacking cohesion.

"We have to be honest and say it's not only the defence. I said after Turkey (Germany's 3-2 loss last weekend) that defence starts up front, with the way we run and pass, and with our attitude.

"We need to infuse ourselves with some positive energy, with some emotion and defend emotionally -- right now we're doing the opposite."

Defender Mats Hummels, one of the few 2014 World Cup winners remaining in the Germany squad, was confident the team could turn things around before the Euro starts in June.&nbsp;

"It takes a while. We have a bit of time until the Euro. I think we can take massive steps," he said.

"If we work hard, it could be a really good tournament for us."

Germany fell behind to a Marcel Sabitzer goal in the first half and then lost Leroy Sane early in the second to a red card, the Bayern Munich winger pushing Austria defender Phillipp Mwene in the face and forcing him to the ground. Christoph Baumgartner then scored a second for Austria as Nagelsmann's side struggled to fight back with 10 men. Also Read: Argentina beat Brazil in World Cup qualifiers after kick-off delayed due to clash between police and fans "We're not playing freely. We've an unbelievable amount of work to do in each position," Nagelsmann told German broadcaster ZDF. "We need to accept the situation but we can't fall into the role of being victims." Nagelsmann said his side was "a really well-functioning group at training, but it's not transferring onto the pitch". "We're missing some self-confidence, which is not a surprise when you see the past few months." Germany have now won just three of 11 games since the four-time World Cup winners' embarrassing group-stage exit in Qatar a year ago. "We need to infuse ourselves with some positive energy, with some emotion and defend emotionally -- right now we're doing the opposite." Defender Mats Hummels, one of the few 2014 World Cup winners remaining in the Germany squad, was confident the team could turn things around before the Euro starts in June. "It takes a while. We have a bit of time until the Euro. I think we can take massive steps," he said. "If we work hard, it could be a really good tournament for us."

Evangelical Church in Germany's (EKD) chairperson Annette Kurschus stepped down from the post on Monday (Nov 20) over recent reports of her knowing about alleged sexual abuse by a church employee years ago. Kurschus said that the reports were unfounded. "In this matter I am at ease with myself. At every moment I acted to the best of my knowledge and my conscience," she told reporters. Kurschus also said that the decision to step down was not easy, adding she could no longer help the church's work dealing with historical cases of sexual abuse. Apart from stepping down as EKD chairperson, Kurschus also resigned as president of the Westphalian regional church, a position she served in since 2012. The allegations The allegations against Kurschus are regarding an investigation into a local vicar in Siegen where she used to work. The vicar was accused of a pattern of sexually inappropriate conduct towards other men over the years. Local media quoted the testimony of two men who claimed to have told Kurschus about the abuse allegations in the 1990s. At the start of this year, an anonymous complaint was received against the accused, and Kurschus said that before this, she had "no knowledge of acts of sexualized violence by this person." She also promised that the case would be investigated independently. Kurschus becomes the third person to step down as the EKD's top theologian. The first woman to hold this position- Margot Kässmann, also quit in 2010, just months after taking the job. She was caught running a red light drunk at the wheel of her company car.

France on Thursday (Nov 16) assured support to India, Brazil, Germany and Japan for the permanent membership at the UN Security Council, asserting its longstanding stance on reforming the Security Council.

India, Brazil, Germany and Japan are also the part of G4 political cooperative alliance who support each other's bids for permanent seats in the UN Security Council.

Nicolas de Rivière, France's Permanent Representative in the United Nations said that "reform of the Security Council is necessary for its authority and representativeness".

Rivière suggested that an enlarged Council could have up to 25 members, "including new permanent and non-permanent members".&nbsp;

"We would also like to see a stronger presence of African countries, including among the permanent members," the French ambassador to the UN added, reflecting a sense of bilateral convergence between Paris and New Delhi to prioritise <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/the-capitals-delhi-delivers-as-the-voice-of-global-south-634649">inclusion of African nations</a> to ensure an equitable representation at multilateral high-tables.&nbsp;

Later, India's Permanent UN Representative Ruchira Kamboj noted that under India's presidency of the G20, Africa secured a permanent seat at the table.

This, Kamboj said, "serves as a compelling call to action" for reforms at the UN Security Council.&nbsp;

<h2>'We have no voice at the high table': India on Global South's absence in the UNSC</h2>

A day before India hosted the second edition of the Voice of Global South summit in virtual mode, India at the United Nations said that it shares its collective angst with the countries of Global South that on the issues of core concern to the South, "we have no voice at the high table".&nbsp;

Global South refers to countries often characterised as developing, less developed, primarily located in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and generally do not have an equitable representation in key UN bodies.&nbsp;

India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj made these formal comments while addressing the 'question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council'.&nbsp;

Kamboj called out the nature of the Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGNs), an informal mechanism at the United Nations to address the question of reforms in the UN Security Council, slamming the lack of transparency in the process put in place in 2008.

Since 2008, the Inter Governmental Negotiations (IGN) occur in the informal plenary of a session of the UN General Assembly. These "informal" negotiations are meant to address the question of equitable representation and increase in the membership of the Security Council.&nbsp;

Due to their "informal" nature, the Inter-Governmental Negotiation (IGN) on UN Security Council reform does not have any draft text on the table to negotiate.&nbsp;

"There are no records of previous meetings of the intergovernmental negotiations available with the UN. There are no deadlines set for the negotiations to conclude. Even the two co-chairs of the negotiations are appointed by the President of the UN General Assembly from the same side of the issue, i.e., the elected non-permanent members," Ambassador Asoke Mukerji, India’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations told WION.

The discourse related to the reforms in the United Nations Security Council is picking up the pace ahead of the UN Summit of the Future scheduled for 22 and 23 September 2024. Described by the United Nations as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to mend eroded trust between the countries, the summit is aimed to forge a new global consensus on what our future should look like, and what be done to secure it.

German publication Manager Magazine notes that managers within the company were briefed on the proposed cuts on Friday, and a comprehensive communication plan involving staff is expected to be initiated on Monday.

Marc Siedler, a Continental representative,&nbsp;emphasised the company's dedication to raising the automotive division's level of competitiveness. He told&nbsp;Bloomberg that the plan encompasses potential changes in administrative structures to facilitate faster and more agile decisions in the future and to alleviate the cost side.

As Continental evaluates potential measures to enhance its operational efficiency,&nbsp;Siedler&nbsp;underlined that concrete decisions would be communicated to employees first before being shared with the public.

German industrial production took a steeper plunge than anticipated in September, according to data released on Tuesday. According to Reuters, the federal statistics office reported a 1.4 per cent decline in production compared to the previous month, defying the predictions of analysts who had expected a mere 0.1 per cent downturn. &nbsp;

The industry-heavy German economy, heavily reliant on production for economic growth, is grappling with the repercussions of a recent decline in incoming orders.&nbsp;

The third quarter of 2023 saw a 2.1 per cent reduction in production when compared to the second quarter, indicating a more sustained period of decline, as highlighted by the statistics office. &nbsp;

Even after a revision of the provisional results, the dip in August was less severe than initially estimated, standing at 0.1 per cent instead of the initially reported 0.2 per cent.&nbsp;

Thomas Gitzel, Chief Economist at VP Bank, emphasised the critical role of industrial production in gauging the health of the German economy. "The industry-heavy German economy is dependent on production in order to achieve reasonable economic growth rates," Reuters quoted him as saying, drawing attention to the overall weakness in industrial production throughout the year.&nbsp;

Carsten Brzeski, Global Head of Macro at ING, expressed concern over the broader implications of the disappointing industrial production data. He suggested that not only could the third-quarter GDP growth be revised downward, but the nation might find itself in a technical recession by the year's end. &nbsp;

According to Reuters, Brzeski noted, "Even though there isn’t any hard data for the fourth quarter yet, recent developments have clearly increased the risk that the German economy will end the year in recession."&nbsp;
