Lewis Hamilton led criticism of the&nbsp;tyres Formula One supplier Pirelli plans to introduce in 2021 after drivers had a chance to try them out during Friday's practice sessions for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

"I’m trying my hardest not to say anything," said the Briton, who equalled Michael Schumacher's record haul of seven world titles at the last race in Turkey.

"They’ve had two years now to develop a better tyre," he told a videoconference.

"From a driver point of view we’re working with brands and partners who are at the forefront of technology, elevating and moving forwards and if you’re going back after two years of development, I don’t know what’s happening.

"If that’s all they’ve got and that’s the best that they can do, which it clearly is, then we’ll just be better just to stay with this tyre," added the 35-year-old, who ended the day fastest for Mercedes.

Pirelli has carried over the tyres it used last year into the 2020 season.

The Italian company wants to introduce a tyre for next season that is stronger, featuring the same compound but different construction.

“Every time you propose a new tyre, there are some criticisms, there is a change in balance,” said Pirelli’s F1 boss Mario Isola.

“I’m sure they (the teams) will find a way to balance the car and extract performance from the 2021 tyres.”

Friday practice in Bahrain was the second time teams and drivers have had a chance to evaluate prototypes of the new tyres having also run different versions of them during practice for last month's Portuguese Grand Prix at the Portimao track.

Hamilton, who said the new tyres were three kilos heavier and a second a lap slower, was equally unimpressed after running them at Portimao.

His Ferrari rival and four time champion Sebastian Vettel echoed his comments.

"They were not a step forward," said the German after Bahrain practice. "Probably worth a shot, but I hope we don't see these tyres again.

"If that one is the only option for 2021, then absolutely, I would love to stick with the 2019 tyres."

Formula One: Lewis Hamilton leads criticism of 2021 prototype tyres

Lewis Hamilton revealed on Thursday that he feels he has not yet processed the impact of his achievement in claiming a record-equalling seventh title to become F1’s most successful driver.

The 35-year-old Mercedes driver pulled level with Michael Schumacher when he secured his seventh title and his sixth in seven years with a momentous win at the Turkish Grand Prix two weeks ago.

He said, however, that he felt just as fired up to win the three season-ending races in the Middle East after ‘switching off’ and relaxing since that triumph. &nbsp;

“It's in my DNA,” he told reporters. “It's how I’m wired. I just love that challenge. We're coming into three races where the pressure is different, but the focus is too.

“It's about getting the best performances out of these weekends, but it's also how can we extract a little bit more?

“How can we learn more from these weekends, almost using them as test races, so that we can apply what we learn in these three particularly, and what we've learned this year, into next year's car?”

Hamilton said he had used the respite from constant pressure to allow him to re-charge for the final races.“I've generally just switched off,” he said.

“It's been really bad in the sense that I've got a lot of messages and I'm trying to catch up now.”

He also revealed that ‘the dream’ of racing for Ferrari “just wasn’t meant to be”.

Hamilton admitted he spoke to Ferrari president John Elkann last year, but never felt he was ready to leave Mercedes with whom he is expected to re-sign for the future before the end of this season.

“I was never close at all to leaving my team," he said. "I think it's only right that as drivers and as people when you're looking at your next phases and committing to periods of time in your life, you have to analyse what your options are -- and make sure you have done your due diligence and have the pros and cons.

“I don't necessarily know that our values are aligned and timing-wise, it just wasn't meant to be. I'm not bothered by it. I'm so proud and grateful for the journey that I have with Mercedes.”

Hamilton also pointed out that his points advantage ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas in this year’s title race had been exaggerated by the Finn’s bad luck.

He said Bottas had become stronger each year. "You've seen this year that while yes, the points gap now is where it is, if you look at a lot of the qualifying, it was the smallest of margins.

“So closing the gap in qualifying, he has done already, which has made it quite challenging… If you look at race weekends, it has been so close. Valtteri has been unfortunate this year with reliability issues so that makes the gap look bigger than it is.”

Hamilton added: “I think you've got to remember who he's driving up against – it's not easy being my team-mate, but he comes in weekend in, weekend out, with just the same mentality.

“He's never moaning or complaining that something is wrong with the car. It's always just - 'I've got to do a better job'…. Mentally, he’s one of the strongest drivers here.”

Hamilton remains focused despite record-equalling seventh title

Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton is set to secure his status as Britain’s highest-achieving sportsman of his era and arguably of all-time as he is set to be recognized with a knighthood in the New Year's Honours List.

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, will be rewarded knighthood after Boris Johnson personally intervened to get a nod for Hamilton.

The knighthood will put Hamilton on par with the likes of Sir Mo Farah, Sir Andy Murray and Sir Alastair Cook as sportspersons to have secured knighthood.&nbsp;

According to David Coulthard, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton – in their primes – would be pretty equal in terms of skills and podium finishes.

<h2>Sir Lewis Hamilton after dominating F1 for a decade</h2>

Hamilton, over the years, has sealed a spot as one of the worthy sporting personalities for the honour after dominating Formula One for nearly a decade while setting a record number of wins and pole positions. He secured his seventh world title in Turkey last week as the achievement brought his level with Michael Schumacher in terms of championship titles.

However, Hamilton’s tax status has delayed the impending elevation. Hamilton, who is worth more than £250million resides in Monaco and saved £3.3m in tax by registering his private jet on the Isle of Man. It has been sold since then.

Despite all this, Hamilton remains among the 5,000 highest taxpayers in the UK.

According to Sportsmail, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is happy to overrule the conservation within the sports honours committee to knight an active athlete.&nbsp;

David Richards, chairman of Motorsport UK, the national governing body, said: ‘If correct, this is wonderful news and well-deserved recognition for Lewis.

‘It is for the Government to decide but it is clear that it is not only his considerable record as a sportsman that is outstanding. There are also the other spheres in which he is now a leading voice, from environment issues to fighting for opportunity for all.’

Hamilton will hence become the fourth F1 driver to be knighted after Sir Jack Brabham, Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart, all awarded post-retirement.&nbsp;

Interestingly, no other F1 driver was knighted while racing

Hamilton said last week: ‘When I think about being knighted, I think of people like my grandad who served in the war. And Captain Tom, who waited 100 years.

‘Then you have these doctors and nurses who are saving lives at this hardest time ever. I don’t look at myself as an unsung hero. I haven’t saved anybody.’

Hamilton was awarded MBE in 2008 when he won the first of his titles, aged 23, at McLaren.

The son of a black father and a white mother, whose parents separated in his youth, Hamilton, 35, grew up on a municipal housing estate. His father Anthony at one time held down three jobs to fund his son's embryonic racing career in karting.

Hamilton's journey was unprivileged and without luxury, but it was clear from an early age that he had an outstanding gift for speed and all the gutsy natural instincts of a born racer.

In 1995, aged 10, and wearing a jacket and shoes borrowed from his predecessor as British Formula Cadet karting champion, he went to a glittering awards ceremony in London where he met McLaren's then-boss Ron Dennis.

He asked for an autograph and told him "one day I want to race for you". Dennis replied: "Phone me in nine years and I'll sort you a deal."

Bold, determined and individual, he almost won the title in his first record-breaking season as he reeled off nine successive podiums from his debut in Melbourne, rocking the establishment along the way with his speed and his style.

On and off the track, he was fast, somewhat mercurial and occasionally tempestuous and the combination led to a fierce rivalry with team-mate and two-time champion Fernando Alonso at McLaren.

That was a signal of how tough it was to be for all his future team-mates as Hamilton, who narrowly missed out on the 2007 title, returned to triumph in 2008 with a dramatic last-gasp fifth-place finish in Brazil.

He also showed frustration as McLaren failed to deliver the speed to beat Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull, who reeled off four straight title triumphs from 2010 to 2013, by which time Hamilton had departed for Mercedes.

Escaping the management regime of Dennis and his father, Hamilton found freedom at Mercedes alongside team-mate Nico Rosberg, his teenage karting friend and rival.

This enabled Hamilton to express himself with a headline-grabbing trans-Atlantic lifestyle, mixing with musicians and 'fashionistas'.

He showed little love for any duty to obey conventions and, for many observers, gave his&nbsp;sport&nbsp;a welcome injection of freshness and diversity as champion again in 2014 and 2015.

Rosberg broke Hamilton's sequence of supremacy in 2016 and then retired, leaving the Englishman to dominate.

His former McLaren team-mate Jenson Button summed up Hamilton's pure speed when he said: "For me, over one lap, I don't think there is anyone as quick as Lewis and I don't think there ever has been."

That speed, which has always been a natural talent, has in recent seasons been allied to a more mature attitude to his job as team leader.

Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff once summed up: "He is never satisfied. He never settles. He is never happy with where he is as a racing driver and a human being."

Having achieved so much as his&nbsp;sport's best-known ambassador, Hamilton's interest in social issues has emerged more frequently.

Last season, he began voicing his concerns for the environment and revealed a fleeting despair at the state of the world when he used Instagram to declare that the planet was "a messed-up place" and he felt he wanted "to give up". &nbsp;

That commentary, including revelations about his vegan lifestyle, led to the man who frequently used private jets and occupies a&nbsp;sport&nbsp;hardly know for its green credentials being accused of hypocrisy.

"I'm only human," he retorted. "Like everyone, we have up and down days. That's what I've been really trying to convey."

This year has seen him press for greater diversity in the paddock, a push sparked by his vocal support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

His own career and his quest for self-expression and freedom has shaped his advice for young drivers.

"What I can definitely advise any kid that's out there trying to race is don't listen to people who tell you that you need a mental coach or you need someone to help control your mind," he said.

"You need to let it run wild and free and discover yourself. It is all about discovery. And only you can do it."

When Hamilton wrapped up his sixth world title in Texas last year, his father summed up his son's achievement: "It's absolutely amazing and not bad for a boy from a Stevenage council house."

Formula One: Lewis Hamilton wins record-equaling 7th world championship

Formula One 'GOAT' Lewis Hamilton's career-defining races!

Formula One unveiled a 23-race calendar for 2021 on Tuesday, its biggest ever, but the Vietnamese Grand Prix has been dropped.

The season will start in Australia on March 21 and will include the first ever race in Saudi Arabia on November 28 before the season ends a week later in Abu Dhabi.

Vietnam was to hold a street race on April 25 but doubts about the event arose after Nguyen Duc Chung, who was Hanoi's mayor and a major supporter of the event, was arrested on corruption charges in August. In the calendar unveiled on Tuesday, the race slot was left vacant.

F1's 2020 season was heavily disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic but is eventually being run over 17 races, with reigning champion Lewis Hamilton on course to win the title for the seventh time.

Spectators have been barred from most races this year but organisers said they expect fans to return next year.

"The plans for 2021 have involved extensive dialogue with all promoters and their local and national authorities at a time of ongoing fluidity related to the global pandemic," F1 said in a statement.&nbsp;

"As we have said before, we expect fans to return for the 2021 season and for the calendar to look similar to the originally planned 2020 season."

Saudi Arabia said last week it was holding a race for the first time, an announcement that is likely to spark fresh accusations from human rights groups that the kingdom is using high-profile sports events to "wash" its human rights record.

The Netherlands, home to the popular Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, gets a race a year earlier than originally planned with a September 5 slot in the coastal town of Zandvoort. It will be the first Dutch grand prix since 1985.

Vietnam signed up for Formula One hoping the glamour of the sport could reflect the country's economic lift-off and reshape Hanoi's staid image, much as it has done for Singapore which will again host a race next year.

The communist nation inked a 10-year deal with Formula One in 2018 with state media saying hosting the race would cost the country $60 million per year.

The fee has been picked up in full by the country's largest private conglomerate, VinGroup, which had been hoping to dazzle with a night race.

But its 2020 race was cancelled due to concerns that teams and fans coming from overseas could spark a new outbreak of Covid-19 and the corruption scandal surrounding Nguyen Duc Chung now threatens the future of the event.

"Without Chung, the future of the race is gloomy. It might not happen," a source close to the race told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Formula One unveils biggest-ever 23-race calendar for 2021

Saudi Arabia on Thursday said that it will host its first Formula One Grand Prix for the first time next year with the Red Sea city of Jeddah set to host a night race.&nbsp;

"Hosting this event is part of the 'Vision 2030' project, with the support of our leadership and especially His Highness the Crown Prince," Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki said, referring to the kingdom's transformation plan.

Saudi Arabia has been locked in for the 2021 season as part of the record 23-race F1 programme as the motorsport seeks to bounce back stronger after a shorter 2020 season that has been hampered due to COVID-19 pandemic.

"We hope to overcome this pandemic and that people will be able to attend, but things aren't clear yet in this regard," Prince Abdulaziz told a press conference.

Formula One has been under the spotlight over staging a race in Bahrain and the addition of Saudi Arabia might escalate scrutiny from human rights watchers.

Saudi Arabia, along with rival Qatar, is also competing to host the 2030 Asian Games.&nbsp;

Under de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s “Vision 2030” master plan, Saudi Arabia is aiming to clean up their image of rights abuses and export of hardline technology.

Critics say that in a country where two-thirds of the population is under 30, the sporting drive is aimed at blunting public frustration over economic downturn and soaring youth unemployment.

"Saudi Arabia has worked hard at 'sportswashing' its reputation -- trying to use the glamour of sport as a public relations tool to improve its international image," Amnesty International said earlier this year.

Formula One teams Renault and Ferrari have voiced their opposition to a freeze of F1's engine regulations from 2022 that would enable Red Bull to take on Honda's power unit once the Japanese manufacturer leave.

According to Red Bull boss Christian Horner, the preferred option is to take on the Honda power unit but the regulations would need to be frozen to make that affordable.

Mercedes, the dominant force in Formula One, have been supportive but Renault's Cyril Abiteboul said on Saturday it was a non-starter.

"I am against freezing the engines. We have no intention to stop what could be a very important platform for us. We do not accept it," the Frenchman said ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Italy's Imola circuit.

"We are in favour of talking about medium to long term plans for the engines of the future, but certainly not about freezing the power units."

Ferrari chief executive Louis Camilleri told La Gazzetta Dello Sport this week that freezing the power units went against the spirit of Formula One.

"From 2022, the regulations provide for the introduction of a fuel with a 10 per cent ethanol content, but the FIA wants to reach 100 per cent as soon as possible," he added.

"This inevitably involves the development of some engine components."

Valterri Bottas on Saturday snatched pole position from Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in what was a dramatic late lap in qualifying at Imola. The Finn, 77 points behind series leader and six-time champion Hamilton, grabbed the pole position by a tenth of a second.

Hamilton, who was the quickest in practice on Saturday morning, had been on top in most of the qualifying season, took provisional pole during his first run in Q3 only for Bottas to overtake him in the final seconds.

Max Verstappen finished third for Red Bull ahead of Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo and Alex Albon of Red Bull.

Charles Leclerc took seventh for Ferrari with Daniil Kvyat eight in the second Alpha Tauri ahead of two McLarens of Norris and Sainz.
Bottas final-second pole qualification brought him his fourth pole of the season and his 15th career pole as Mercedes claimed another front row ahead of the race in Imola in which they can complete an unprecedented seventh consecutive championship.

Valterri Bottas snatches pole from Lewis Hamilton as F1 returns to Imola

Formula One fears that COVID-19 lockdowns across Europe could hit the sport again as Lewis Hamilton eyes a record-equalling seventh world title, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the third F1 race to be held in Italy in a virus-hit season, Wolff said developments surrounding the dreaded virus and lockdown situations were worrying signs for F1.&nbsp;

"The situation is becoming more difficult," he said at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari on Friday. "F1 does not put anyone in danger as we stay in our microcosm, but we also cannot ignore that the number of cases in various countries is growing rapidly.

"At some point, the leaders of these countries may decide to close the borders which may affect our plans."
Wolff further said that F1 Chief Executive Chase Carey has assured that the schedule remains as it is but added that situation can change rapidly. He also sounded worried about F1’s plans of an unprecedented 23-race season in 2021.

"As of now, Chase Carey (F1 chief executive) has assured us that the schedule remains in place," he said. "But he also said that, against the backdrop of a progressing pandemic, no one knows what the situation will be in a week -- let alone a month."

Meanwhile, discussions are underway about a proposed salary cap on Formula One drivers with teams supportive of the idea.

As per the proposal, a $30 million cap for teams to pay drivers, starting from 2023. All teams can spend more but it has to come out of what will be a $135 million annual budget caps for teams by 2023.

'World Record': Lewis Hamilton's 92nd career win Formula One

Honda said Friday it will withdraw from Formula One at the end of the 2021 season as part of the car industry's move away from internal combustion engines.

The Red Bull and Alpha Tauri teams use power units made by the Japanese manufacturer.

Honda said it was pursuing "carbon neutrality by 2050" using "future power-unit and energy technologies, including fuel-cell vehicle and battery technologies".

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner said: "The shifting focus within the automotive industry has led to Honda's decision to re-deploy their resources and we understand and respect the reasoning behind this.

"Their decision presents obvious challenges for us as a team but we have been here before and with our strength in depth we are well prepared and equipped to respond effectively, as we have proven in the past."

Honda returned to Formula One in 2015 but struggled for three years working with McLaren.

The company transferred its attention to Red Bull's junior team Toro Rosso for 2018 and then Red Bull for 2019, and have won a total of five races over the last two years.

Honda to withdraw from Formula One at end of 2021 season

Tobacco giants have spent billions on advertising with Formula One teams over the years, and are again swelling their spending despite a supposed ban, industry monitors said Wednesday.

In a fresh report entitled "Driving Addiction: F1 and Tobacco Advertising", F1 industry monitor&nbsp;Formula Money&nbsp;and tobacco industry watchdog&nbsp;STOP pointed to data indicating cigarette-makers were aggressively stepping up spending.

Since F1 was established 70 years ago, its teams and events have sold $4.4 billion in advertising and sponsorship to tobacco companies, the report said.

And after years of declining sponsorship spending, brought on by growing awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco products, national bans and a supposed ban within F1, the report said that spending last year reached "a staggering $100 million", putting it back at levels not seen since 2011.

The spending, by tobacco giants Philip Morris&nbsp;and British American Tobacco on the F1 Ferrari and McLaren teams, is this year expected to rise to $115 million, it said.

The findings prompted concern from the World Health Organization, with health promotion chief Ruediger Krech insisting in a statement that "we must not go backwards in the fight against tobacco."

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Harm for generations' -</h2>

&nbsp;

"Promoting these products attracts new tobacco users, especially among young people, causing harm for generations to come."&nbsp;

The WHO estimates that tobacco use kills more than seven million people each year.

PMI and BAT last year formed partnerships with their scientific research subsidiaries and Formula 1 teams Ferrari and McLaren, more than a decade after cigarette advertising was all but banned from the sport.

The tobacco companies are no longer advertising for their traditional cigarette brands, but do appear to be pushing new, so-called "smoke-free" heated tobacco products, although they do not mention them by name.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA), Formula 1's ruling body, has since 2006 been opposed to any advertising or sponsoring of cigarettes or tobacco.

But Wednesday's report lamented that FIA's previous public commitment to fully ban tobacco sponsorship had been watered down to a mere recommendation in 2003. &nbsp;

"The FIA&nbsp;claims that it wants to promote a net positive contribution to&nbsp;society. That's not possible while it is still linked to an industry that causes such harm," Mary Assunta of STOP said in the statement.&nbsp;

Contacted by AFP, FIA insisted in an email that it "remains firmly opposed to tobacco advertising and continues to stand by its 2003 recommendations."

However, it said, "we are not in a position to interfere with the private commercial arrangements between the teams and their sponsors."

"We will continue to monitor the compliance with the applicable laws."

PMI meanwhile slammed STOP's "ideological attacks" and "misguided campaigns" against the company, insisting its partnership with Ferrari "does not and will not be used to advertise or promote any PMI-branded tobacco or nicotine-containing products." &nbsp;

"Our partnership activities respect all applicable laws," spokesman Ryan Sparrow said in an email.

Phil Chamberlain of STOP described such arguments as "a typically slippery move."

"PMI and BAT claim that they aren't directly advertising cigarette brands. But according to trademarks registered by the companies, these brands are associated with tobacco products."

Wednesday's report certainly indicated that the tobacco companies benefit from their involvement in the sport.

It found that media coverage of the 2019 races alone generated exposure worth "at least $150.3 million" for PMI's 'Mission Winnow' brand, and $27.6 million for BAT brands.

"For tobacco companies, the benefits are clear," co-author Caroline Reid of Formula Money said in the statement.

"This is a global sport that draws more than 500 million fans worldwide, mostly young and male — a prized demographic. And tobacco companies receive a real return on investment."

Formula One slammed over swelling tobacco advertising

Six-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton's early season form has been great and many wonder if he could match or break Michael Schumacher's record of winning 91 Grand Prix.

Six-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton's early season form has been great and many wonder if he could match or break Michael Schumacher's record of winning 91 Grand Prix. Many predict this record could be broken on Ferrari's home soil in Italy in September. Hamilton has shown absolute class in previous two outings which includes his win at Hungary Grand Prix on Sunday. The race on Sunday marked his 86th win in Formula One. 2020's Formula One season was delayed due to coronavirus and will witness four races in August, with two at Hamilton's home circuit Silverstone, one in Spain and then the Belgian Grand Prix – before moving to Italy for two races. Formula One's most successful racer Micheal Schumacher won five of his seven titles and gained 72 of his 91 victories with Ferrari. If Hamilton keeps winning, he could be chasing the record at Monza on September 6 and Ferrari-owned Mugello a week later. Hamilton's win in Hungary matched Schumacher's record of winning eight races at a single venue. Schumacher won eight French Grands Prix. The defending champion has never won more than five races in succession in the past and will have to maintain his momentum at Silverstone in the two versions of the British Grand Prix without any support from a crowd. "I love Silverstone but I've got to say that's something that's bugging me a little bit," he said on Sunday after being reminded that the British races would be run behind closed doors. "It's the highlight of the year, the support is insane," he said. "It grows every year and I get to interact with the fans differently on that weekend and it's such an honour and privilege to be able to perform well and win a Grand Prix in your home country. "It feels great to be out there once you're in the zone, but I do miss the energy they bring. There's nothing like it. I don't have a lot of years left and that's going to be one year that I miss all the fans. "But I do want them to stay safe and we are in that period of time where safety is everything. So, I hope I can perform well for them there because I know they will be watching." (Inputs from AFP)

Lewis Hamilton 'on-track' to break Schumacher's record at Ferrari-owned Mugello

The Austrian Grand Prix was a roller-coaster ride in every sense. While Finland’s Valtteri Bottas won a dramatic Austrian season-opener for champions Mercedes in a race with only 11 finishers and no spectators, the humdinger of a race witnessed yet another crash between Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon.&nbsp;

Hamilton made contact with Albon just on the Turn Five towards the end of the race with the latter clearly ahead with charge, in third, with softer tires than the Mercedes following a late Safety Car as he appeared to have gotten ahead of the six-time world champion.&nbsp;

<h2>Hamilton-Albon: A racing incident?</h2>

Even though Hamilton believes the collision with Albon was a “racing incident” despite receiving a penalty, the Red Bull driver didn’t share the same view.&nbsp;

Hamilton was given a 5s penalty which ended up costing him a podium with Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris skipping past him. Albon, on the other hand, went spinning and dropped down the field and retired from the race he reckons he could have won.&nbsp;
It is not the first time that Hamilton has been penalised for colliding with Albon having pushed into the Red Bull last year at Interlagos.

“This guy is such a sore loser,” a furious Albon said on team radio immediately after the spin.

While Finland’s Valtteri Bottas won a dramatic Austrian season-opener for champions Mercedes in a race with only 11 finishers and no spectators, the humdinger of a race witnessed yet another crash between Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon. Hamilton made contact with Albon just on the Turn Five towards the end of the race with the latter clearly ahead with charge, in third, with softer tires than the Mercedes following a late Safety Car as he appeared to have gotten ahead of the six-time world champion. Hamilton-Albon: A racing incident? Even though Hamilton believes the collision with Albon was a “racing incident” despite receiving a penalty, the Red Bull driver didn’t share the same view. Albon, on the other hand, went spinning and dropped down the field and retired from the race he reckons he could have won. It is not the first time that Hamilton has been penalised for colliding with Albon having pushed into the Red Bull last year at Interlagos. “This guy is such a sore loser,” a furious Albon said on team radio immediately after the spin. Austrian GP: Lewis Hamilton-Alex Albon get into dramatic collision yet again - Watch

Max Verstappen will seek a hat-trick of home wins for Red Bull and an early lead in the drivers championship at this weekend's delayed and somewhat surreal season-opening Austrian Grand Prix.&nbsp;

For everyone involved, the race will be an unprecedented experience – the calendar is unknown beyond the first eight races in Europe in 10 weeks, all to be run behind closed doors and severe limitations introduced with a new paddock protocol forbidding meetings.

As racing returns, the COVID-19 virus remains in circulation, which requires all participants to be tested before travel to Austria on private chartered jets, ongoing tests, the separation of teams and car crews into "bubbles" and controlled hotels.

Teams are cut to a maximum of 80 staff, all in protective equipment, there will be no sponsors, no guests and only a limited number of accredited broadcast and written news media.

Journalists, limited to a dozen instead of 300 or more, have to pass a test within 72 hours in advance of arrival and will not be allowed to leave the media centre.&nbsp;

All interviews and news conferences will take place by video.

The teams will be kept isolated, based in tents with awnings instead of their usual grand motorhomes – and there is expected to be a synchronised taking the knee by the drivers on the grid, to support Black Lives Matter, ahead of Sunday's race.&nbsp;

Afterwards, there will be no podium ceremony.

When the race begins, it will end the longest gap between races in the sport since 1962, but with two successive races in Austria and then one in Hungary, the pressure will be immediate and intense.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said: "There's been a long drought. We all do this because we love it. We've missed it, so we can't wait to start."

"It's going to be exciting and intense. The races come thick and fast."

Dutch driver Verstappen, who bullied his way past Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc to triumph in front of a mass of his "orange army" of fans last year, says he is unfazed by high expectations or the absence of spectators at the Red Bull Ring, a remote and compact circuit in the Styrian Alps.

"I am not thinking about a hat-trick," he said.

"The most important thing for me is to have a competitive car and to perform at my best.

"I never consider myself as a favourite because, actually, when you look at the track, it's not even our best one, but last year it was very warm and we were good at keeping the engine cool.

"So I don't expect an easy win – I think Mercedes will be very strong again and they are the ones to beat."

Verstappen, who has kept a low profile during the lockdown, delivered three wins and eight podiums last year as Lewis Hamilton claimed his sixth title with Mercedes, who this year seek an unprecedented seventh constructors' and drivers' double in succession.

Verstappen and team-mate Alex Albon will have an upgraded Honda engine package, developed since the coronavirus lockdown ended, to boost them at the contest in the Styrian Alps where the 800-metre altitude can affect engine performance.

Mercedes will also have an updated package while Ferrari, struggling to match them in pre-season testing, announced Tuesday that they are updating their cars for the third race in Hungary.

Hamilton this year bids for a record-equalling seventh drivers title as he campaigns passionately for greater diversity, and against racism, in the sport.

"We are preparing the best way we can for what is going to be the most difficult season that F1 and all of us have experienced," he said in a video from the team, which – at his prompting -- is running black livery this year to support equality and diversity.

Formula One in brave new world as Verstappen seeks repeat Austria triumph

The world has been stuck in the pit garage over the last few months to borrow a racing term but now the covers are coming off. Sport has resumed in some parts of the world and the truly global sport of Formula One is gearing up for a much delayed season opener.&nbsp;

Alpha Touri driver Piere Gasly in an exclusive interview with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, opened up about the Austria Grand Prix, risks surrounding COVID-19, Lewis Hamilton and F1's stance against racism, expectations from the season and much more.

Digvijay Singh Deo: Pierre,&nbsp;we are in July and must be strange preparing for a season opener so late.

Pierre Gasly:&nbsp;Yes, I must say it does feel very strange. The past few months have been very unusual, not just for us Formula One drivers, but for everyone in the world. Initially, we were ready to start the season in Australia in March, but since then there have been a string of postponements because of the coronavirus pandemic. However now, much to the pleasure of everyone involved, we are starting the campaign in Austria. I think the formula one management has done a fantastic job in organising the season and I cannot wait to get back on the track.

DSD: Is the competitor in you relieved that you are having an F1 season, rewind a few months and even a truncated season looked rather difficult.

Pierre Gasly: I always believed that we would start the season at some point, although I didn't know when. I was unsure whether that time would come in June, July or even later. I'm glad that the season is finally getting underway. There are strict regulations in place with no spectators for the first few races and a 'bio-bubble' has been created to ensure that the risk of the infection spreading is minimal. We are very fortunate because many other sports are struggling to restart their competitions. Hopefully, we will be able to hold a complete formula one season with 15 to 18 races.

DSD: It's not been easy has it since those farcical scenes in Melbourne where confusion prevailed till the early hours before the race was called off. No one has been immune be it drivers mechanics, stewards. Everyone has been equally at risk. But the risk exists even today, doesn’t it? We are seeing it in golf on the PGA Tour.

Pierre Gasly:&nbsp;I believe that there is no point in the near future when the risk level will be at 'zero'. We just need to do everything we can to create the safest possible environment for all of us. I think every individual associated with formula one has to act in a disciplined manner and ensure that the bio-bubble is maintained. I just had a COVID test two days ago which returned negative, I will have another one before I can enter the paddock and then once more before the race on Sunday. So our health is being monitored on a regular basis. Even within my team, I will not come in contact with all of the members, I will only be in close contact with two or three of them.

<img alt="Pierre-Gasly" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="3bae28c3-090d-4b1f-9575-116fc500ff11" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1P54YY.jpg" />

DSD: This is also a lot about self-discipline and trust between team members. As a driver, you will have to be in extremely close contact with a lot of people in the Alpha Tauri team. And everyone has to ensure that they don’t step out of the bubble.

Pierre Gasly: We have to trust each other. The formula one management has been very clear in their instructions, so we know exactly what we are allowed to do and what we can't do. The only way we can start the season now in this situation is if all of us collectively follow the safety regulations. I hope everything functions in a smooth manner, but all we can really do at an individual level is be responsible and cautious and hope that everyone else does the same.

DSD: If I could probe just a bit more then the paddock will look very different, also no podium celebrations at the end of the race.

Pierre Gasly: it's certainly going to feel different. On average, around 250,000 to 300,000 thousand people come to watch an F1 race, it creates such a brilliant atmosphere that cannot be replicated. The whole energy around the track changes because of the fans, it really gives you goosebumps. I'm definitely going to miss the fans, but at the moment I don't think anyone knows when we will be able to hold races with spectators. We just have to make the best out of the current situation we find ourselves in.

DSD: I was scrolling through your twitter feed and came across a video of you getting the car out of the garage for a test last month. Just explain the thrill of revving those engines up again.

Pierre Gasly: That's the best I have felt in a while. The last time I was in the car was during testing in Barcelona at the end of February. So I was sitting in the car after four months. I did practice on the simulator during the lockdown period, but it is nothing like the real thing. It felt really amazing to be out on the track and we also got to complete a couple of laps at the Imola track, which was really special. I just can't wait for the weekend and the upcoming season.

DSD: You also have used this shutdown to good effect on a personal level haven't you. You actually locked yourself down in Dubai for a couple of months and really worked on your fitness levels.

Pierre Gasly: I really wanted to make good use of the time during the lockdown and I decided on to work on my physical fitness. The lockdown period was the perfect opportunity to do so and even though I was in good shape ahead of the Australian Grand Prix in March, now I feel I am in the best shape of my life. I feel I am ready for what will be a very intense season because we've never had so many races in such a short span of time. So I'm glad that I am well equipped to deal with that challenge.

DSD: A&nbsp;lot of time has elapsed but in pure racing terms just the second race since your career-best performance at the Brazilian GP in November last year. Your first podium and now the quest is to make it a habit.

Pierre Gasly: The ultimate goal for me is to fight for the formula one world championship. I'm at Alpha Tauri, which is a 'mid-field' team, we are fighting for points regularly but the performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix was exceptional. Unfortunately, we cannot do that every weekend because of the difference in the quality of the cars. We obviously want to do our best and the key is to keep the momentum going from last year. Hopefully the car this year is also going to be as competitive and we will fight for points again. It's still a bit early to have any expectations from the season because we have only had one test in Barcelona, but I hope that we can reproduce some of the form&nbsp;we showed last season.

DSD: First we had the pandemic and now we are seeing the world swept by the black lives matter protests. Formula one too has announced a slew of measures. How do you react to that?

Pierre Gasly: I think that the sport has taken a stand and this is a step in the right direction. It is good that the sport has taken these actions to increase diversity and it will lead to a more diverse formula one in the future.

DSD: Lewis Hamilton, in fact, has been spearheading the move for diversity in motorsport. How important is it for leaders in various sports to raise their voices to make an impact?

Pierre Gasly: I think that Lewis Hamilton is a real leader and he speaks for a lot of people. I don't want to speak on his behalf, but I think he faced some discrimination while growing up and it is great to see him standing up for the values he believes in. We need elite sportspersons like him to come forward because their voice is powerful and carries weight.

DSD: McLaren driver Lando Norris has said that the drivers have discussed taking a knee as well together. This would be massive as F1&nbsp;is a multicultural sport in terms of its reach.

Pierre Gasly: at the moment we are discussing a gesture that all drivers could make to express our support to the movement. It is important that we as a sport stand for a more equal and just society.

DSD: Talking about Mercedes they remain the team to beat but then this is home turf for the Red Bull as well. With the season now shortened can teams expect to end their dominance?

Pierre Gasly: I don't really like to comment on the state of things before the season begins. But there is no doubt that Mercedes have been the dominant force in formula one in recent years. The coronavirus break might make the season a little bit unpredictable, but I still feel Mercedes will be the team to beat. I believe lewis hamilton has a very good chance of winning his 7th world championship. I think it's going to be a very intriguing season and it is only after a couple of races that we will have a better understanding of how things will pan out.

DSD: Also with so much still unknown as the season begins, will this unpredictability be a huge factor and add drama to the spectacle in your opinion...

Pierre Gasly: People need some entertainment at the moment in their lives. As a big fan of football and basketball, I myself have missed watching these sports live on television and the adrenaline rush that comes with it. There will certainly be a lot of attention on this formula one season and hopefully, we will be able to put up a good show for all the fans. There is still some uncertainty regarding the second half of the season, so we have to monitor things closely and then assess the situation.

<img alt="Pierre-Gasly" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="7de9ff18-795d-4d7f-ac0e-3361af05da4a" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1PT5QD.jpg" />

DSD: the other thing that has happened in this shutdown period is a merry-go-round kicked off by Sebastian Vettel's decision to leave Ferrari and a lot more could still happen. There is talk of Fernando Alonso returning as well so many drivers are also racing for their futures.

Pierre Gasly: It's definitely going to be exciting to see what happens ahead of the next season in 2021. There a couple of empty seats and there has been a lot of speculation on who will take those places. Fernando Alonso is an absolute legend of the sport. With Sebastian Vettel, no one is really sure where he'll end up, so it's definitely going to be interesting to see what happens.

DSD: Hamilton and Vettel have been the senior statesmen in the sport but do you get a feeling that a change of guard is round the corner. Young drivers like yourself are now knocking on the doorsteps of a generational shift.

Pierre Gasly: Yes, there has been an increase in the number of young drivers coming up and taking the big seats, so there might be a change of guard soon. But Lewis is a 6-time world champion, Sebastian is a 4-time world champion, so they should be able to continue for as long as they want. I have raced with most of the young F1 drivers in lower level kart racing as well, so it is nice to see that we have developed together.

DSD: You have driven alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull and he is someone who has spent a few seasons in the sport and has been tipped as a future world champion. What does he bring to a team?

Pierre Gasly: I believe Formula One is a sport where experience makes a really big difference. Now with a bit of experience under his belt, he will have a good chance to fight for the world championship. He definitely has the ability as a driver and he's also backed by a fast car and a top team, so he should go all out for that title.

Gasly: F1 will stand for an equal and more just society

After much delay, the Formula One season is finally set to kick start at Spielberg’s Red Bull Ring in Austria on July 5 (Sunday). The original opener in Australia witnessed a last-minute cancellation after five crew members were quarantined after displaying COVID-19 symptoms with the race now set to open in Austria.&nbsp;

Pierre Gasly spoke about the F1 season as the AlphaTauri driver said that the Formula One management team has done a tremendous job in organising the season while adding he cannot wait to get back on track after a prolonged break.

“The past few months have been very unusual, not just for us Formula One drivers, but for everyone in the world. Initially, we were ready to start the season in Australia in March, but since then there have been a string of postponements because of the coronavirus pandemic. However now, much to the pleasure of everyone involved, we are starting the campaign in Austria. I think the Formula One management has done a fantastic job in organising the season and I cannot wait to get back on the track,” Gasly told WION’s Sports Editor Digvijay&nbsp;Singh Deo.

While the F1 season is originally scheduled for 22 grands prix, only eight races have been confirmed thus far with the season set to get underway in Austria behind closed doors over the next two weekends. However, the majority of people in the F1 circuit, including Gasly are optimistic of having 15 to 18 races in the season. The Austria Grand Prix will be held in a different scenario, one without spectators or sponsors present while the teams would operate in ‘bubbles’ under strict health guidelines with media kept at a distance.&nbsp;

“I always believed that we would start the season at some point, although I didn't know when. Hopefully, we will be able to hold a complete formula one season with 15 to 18 races,” Gasly explained.

The March 15 race in Melbourne was called off without a wheel being turned and the F1 organisers had to wait more than 100 days for another opportunity to hit the floor running. There will be risks but with European football leagues such as Bundesliga and Premier League showing strict measures can lead to matches being played safely, F1 has an example to follow. Gasly said that F1 season can be a success if everyone stays united and collectively follows the directives.

“I believe that there is no point in the near future when the risk level will be at 'zero'. So our health is being monitored on a regular basis,” Gasly said.

Even within my team, I will not come in contact with all of the members, I will only be in close contact with two or three of them. We have to trust each other. The formula one management has been very clear in their instructions, so we know exactly what we are allowed to do and what we can't do. The only way we can start the season now in this situation is if all of us collectively follow the safety regulations. I hope everything functions in a smooth manner, but all we can really do at an individual level is be responsible and cautious and hope that everyone else does the same,” the Frenchman added.

Gasly wants to take inspiration from the Brazilian Grand Prix in November 2019 and continue to pull off upsets in the biggest of stages. The Alpha Tauri racer is targeting the Formula One championship.
&nbsp;
“The ultimate goal for me is to fight for the Formula One World Championship. I'm at Alpha Tauri, which is a 'midfield' team, we are fighting for points regularly but the performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix was exceptional. Unfortunately, we cannot do that every weekend because of the difference in the quality of the cars. We obviously want to do our best and the key is to keep the momentum going from last year. Hopefully the car this year is also going to be as competitive and we will fight for points again. It's still a bit early to have any expectations from the season because we have only had one test in Barcelona, but I hope that we can reproduce some of the form we showed last season,” Gasly said.

Formula One has also supported the Black Lives Matter movement with Lewis Hamilton leading the charge following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis under police custody. Gasly called Hamilton a ‘real leader’.&nbsp;

“I think that the sport has taken a stand and this is a step in the right direction. It is good that the sport has taken these actions to increase diversity and it will lead to a more diverse formula one in the future. I think that Lewis Hamilton is a real leader and he speaks for a lot of people. I don't want to speak on his behalf, but I think he faced some discrimination while growing up and it is great to see him standing up for the values he believes in. We need elite sportspersons like him to come forward because their voice is powerful and carries weight. At the moment we are discussing a gesture that all drivers could make to express our support to the movement. It is important that we as a sport stand for a more equal and just society,” Gasly said.

Exclusive | Pierre Gasly: Discipline, unity key to successful Formula One season

Formula One emerges from its three-month coronavirus lockdown with Sunday's new season curtain-raiser, the Austrian Grand Prix.

AFP Sport looks at five talking talking points ahead of the start of the behind-closed doors race at the Spielberg circuit.

<h2>Can Hamilton retain focus to land seventh title?</h2>

The main threat to Lewis Hamilton's bid to land a record-equalling seventh drivers' title is likely to be himself -- just ahead of Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The sport's first black champion has admitted he is committed to racing for more than personal or team triumphs.

"I'm racing for all of you out there who may feel that you don't have a voice," said the Briton, who made his voice heard in support of recent anti-racism protests during the enforced time-out.

"In the world, in the society that we live in, I think making it as a young black kid from a council estate in Stevenage, making it to F1 through the tiniest window of opportunity -- that's a very, very important part of my journey and then staying there and continuing to deliver against adversity."

Asked where F1 should race, he added: "Africa. It's such an important place to go back. At the moment, F1 goes to countries and doesn't really leave much behind, if anything. Formula 1 has to shift into being a sport that does go to places and leaves behind something that can really help the communities."

<h2>Verstappen's chance to seize the day?</h2>

Having proved his speed and racing talent this is the time for Max Verstappen and Red Bull to seize their moment and emerge from the opening trio of races as championship leaders.

A year ago, the young Dutchman bullied his way to victory at the Red Bull Ring and a double repeat of that plus a strong result at Budapest would see the Milton Keynes-based team on top of the embryonic title race.

Pre-season testing in Barcelona suggested their car is very fast, but also 'skittish' and may face reliability problems.

But the driver pairing of Verstappen and Alex Albon has a proven ability to shine in challenging conditions and can beat Ferrari to take the fight to champions Mercedes.

<h2>Will Vettel shine in final season with Ferrari?&nbsp;</h2>

After confirming he is leaving Ferrari at the end of this year, Sebastian Vettel may feel freed and capable of delivering the consistency and speed that can inspire the team again despite the threat of Charles Leclerc.

The four-time champion has the speed and quality, but Ferrari have to deliver a car that can show immediate performance development as the season unfolds.

Pre-season testing suggested that this year's machine had sacrificed some of last year's outright straight-line speed for improved pace in slow and medium corners.

<h2>End of the road for Williams and what now for talented Russell?</h2>

George Russell and Williams face a defining challenge and season after the famous British team was put up for sale during the lockdown – leaving their young and talented English driver to race for his future this year.

Russell, a member of the Mercedes junior driver programme, is tipped to have a big future, but needs a stronger team in 2021 to prove himself unless Williams find some resurgent form and haul themselves off the bottom of the championship.

Russell made good use of the lockdown to become F1's 'virtual champion' during e-racing from his home computer and said recently he is "very excited" to return to racing.&nbsp;

"It's going to be surreal, but I can't wait for it – I just want to be back in a car."

<h2>No hugging and not much prospect of joy for Ricciardo at Renault?</h2>

Daniel Ricciardo is famous for his beaming smile and big hugs, but he has had to abandon his tactile approach to life.

He will be joined by a new Renault team-mate in Frenchman Esteban Ocon, but decided during lockdown to leave the team next year and switch to McLaren as successor to departing Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who is joining Ferrari.

The fact that McLaren are switching to Mercedes engines was a factor and one that may not have enhanced his standing with Renault as he starts his final season.

"I've got to keep my distance," he admitted in a team video call last week.

"We're going to find some new ways to embrace each other, especially after a good result, but obviously we're going to do what we can to keep this thing out of the paddock."

China offered two Formula one races this year: Shanghai official

Formula One chiefs want to stage two races in Shanghai this season after the Chinese Grand Prix was postponed because of the coronavirus, the city's sports boss said Monday, adding there was no final decision.

This year's pandemic-disrupted world championship is expected to launch with a double-header in Austria on July 5 and 12, with Silverstone in England also hosting two races.

The Chinese Grand Prix, originally scheduled for April 19, was postponed in February but Formula One appears determined to race in the country &nbsp;-- one of the sport's key markets -- in the second half of this year.

Asked if there would be two grands prix in Shanghai instead of the usual one, Xu Bin, director of the city's sports bureau, told Shanghai People's Radio: "This was proposed by the F1 management company.

"Everyone knows that F1 has officially announced that they have resumed the first eight European races this year, but none of them are in Asia."

Xu added: "We are still communicating with F1 to see if there is any possibility of hosting two races in Shanghai, but there is no final decision yet.

"Of course we should see how the virus is being controlled."

China, where the coronavirus emerged late last year, had seen a significant drop in the number of infections and deaths.

However, the country is now racing to control a fresh outbreak in the capital Beijing.

Formula One was thrown into chaos in March when the curtain-raising Australian race was cancelled hours before the opening practice session, as the virus spread around the world.

The Singapore, Japan and Azerbaijan grands prix were cancelled on Friday over logistical problems caused by coronavirus.

Formula One wants two races in Shanghai: city sports boss

The Formula One&nbsp;on Friday confirmed that the 2020 Azerbaijan, Singapore and Japanese Grands Prix have been cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic. The decision to cancel the races was taken due to different challenges the organisers are facing. Earlier in June, the opening eight races of a revised calendar for the 2020 season were announced beginning with the Australian Grand Prix in July.

F1 continue to remain confident of having 15-18 races by the time season concludes in mid-December in Abu Dhabi with new calendar expected to be published soon. However, the Azerbaijan, Singapore and Japanese races won’t be a part of the 2020 calendar following the cancellation of events.

A statement from F1 released on Friday read: "As a result of the ongoing challenges presented by COVID-19, we and our promoters in Azerbaijan, Singapore and Japan have taken the decision to cancel their races for the 2020 season.

"These decisions have been taken due to the different challenges our promoters face in those countries. In Singapore and Azerbaijan, the long lead times required to construct street circuits made hosting the events during a period of uncertainty impossible and in Japan, ongoing travel restrictions also led to the decision not to proceed with the race.

"At the same time, we have made significant progress with existing and new promoters on the revised calendar and have been particularly encouraged by the interest that has been shown by new venues in hosting a Formula 1 race during the 2020 season.

"We appreciate this is still a time of uncertainty and complexity around the world and will continue to ensure we proceed with the 2020 season in a cautious and flexible way. We have detailed and robust safety plans in place to ensure we begin our season in the safest possible way."

F1 motorsport chief Ross Brawn said that with plenty of option on plate, organisers are confident of having a great second half of the season while adding there is contingency for an extended European season with a couple of more races while hinting they are still looking for five or six good races in the season.

“Things are moving fast, but we still have time,” he said. “We have lots of different options and we’re very confident we’re going to have a great second half of the season.

“There is a contingency to have an extended European season with another one or two races if needed. I think Bahrain and Abu Dhabi will be the backstop of the season from what we can see at the moment. That gives us 10. We’ll find at least five or six good races in the middle."

Brawn also revealed other European tracks are being evaluated, with the likes of Ferrari-owned Mugello, Imola, Portimao, and Hockenheim all understood to be under consideration.

“There are a number of good European tracks where we could add another one or two races on to make sure we have a comprehensive season," he added. "We’re not going to declare it yet, as it’s still a work in progress.”

The six-time World Champion driver said: "It gave me a really empty feeling because the fans really make that race."

"Around the world, the more fans there the more atmosphere you have, that's why you have places like Silverstone and Monza. So it's going to be very empty.

"I don't know how exciting it's going to be for people watching on TV but it's going to be better than nothing," added the Briton, 35.

"For us, it's going to be like a test day, probably even worse than a test day in the sense that at a test day there's not a huge amount of people in Barcelona that come to watch but there are still some."

Lewis has houses in Monaco and United States, and had a busy life-style and keeps travelling but the pandemic has forced Hamilton to stay at one place.&nbsp;

"I'm great. This is the first time that I can remember that I've been in one place for six weeks," he said.

"I'm excited to get back in, I really do miss it. This has been almost a blessing on one side because it gives you more appreciation for the things that you love and do.

"This has given me more energy and inspiration and determination to keep delivering and keep working with this great team."

He also is learning new languages during the time spent during quarantine: "I've always wanted to learn a language and I still don't know any other languages. It's embarrassing I feel when people ask," he said. "I aced French at school, it was the only thing I aced.

"When I do things I just do it to the extreme so I sit down and do it in two hours basically," Hamilton added. "I just do one week a day."

Formula One without a crowd leaves Lewis Hamilton with an 'empty feeling'

Silverstone owners said on Monday that no spectators would be able to attend the British Grand Prix due to the coronavirus pandemic but the race is still scheduled to go ahead.

The French Grand Prix scheduled for June 28 was cancelled on Monday but while organisers have not yet made a final decision on postponing or cancelling the July 19 British race, Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle paved the way for a behind-closed-doors race.

"I am extremely disappointed to tell you that we are unable to stage this year's British Grand Prix in front of the fans at Silverstone," Pringle in his statement on Silverstone's Twitter account.

"We have left this difficult decision for as long as possible, but it is abundantly clear given the current conditions... that a grand prix under normal conditions is just not going to be possible."

Britain has been one of the countries worst affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, with the number of deaths topping 20,000.

The actual toll could be much higher when deaths in the community are taken into account, particularly at care homes.

The French Grand Prix is the 10th leg of the 2020 championship to be either scrapped (Australia, Monaco, France) or postponed (Bahrain, China, Vietnam, Netherlands, Spain, Azerbaijan, Canada).

British GP will not take place in front of fans: Silverstone

The principal of the Scuderia Ferrari Mattia Binotto has said the team will reconsider their availability in Formula One shortly if austere budget caps are imposed.&nbsp;

Formula One has come to a halt with no races conducted in this year's championship, thus leading to major hit in their finances. So the F1 authorities had decided in cutting down on team budget but Ferrari boss is against this decision as he feels cutting down the budget will risk depreciating F1 as the zenith of motorsport.

In 2019, before the pandemic hit the sport, teams had agreed to a budget cap of $175 million for 2021. But after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the sport has come to a halt. With nine races being cancelled, this year the championship is on the verge of being called off.&nbsp;

After the last week meeting between the FIA and the teams, a budget on $145 million was set for 2021 and $130 million for 2022 was proposed. But the teams did not agree with the budget scale. Binotto, who heads the oldest Formula One team threatened that Ferrari will walk away from the sport.&nbsp;

Mattia Binotto told the Guardian: “The $145m level is already a new and demanding request compared to what was set out last June. It cannot be attained without further significant sacrifices, especially in terms of our human resources. If it was to get even lower, we would not want to be put in a position of having to look at other further options for deploying our racing DNA.”

Ferrari is the oldest team in the sport, who has been competing in the sport since the first championship in 1950.&nbsp;

“F1, we have all sorts of teams with different characteristics,” Binotto said. “They operate in different countries, under different legislation and with their ways of working. Therefore it is not simple and straightforward to make structural changes simply by linearly cutting costs.

“We are well aware that F1 and indeed the whole world right now is going through a particularly difficult time because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this is not the time to react in a hurry as there’s a risk of making decisions on the back of this emergency without clearly evaluating all the consequences.”

Binotto said that Ferrari has represented the country (Italy, which is one of the worst-hit nations in terms of coronavirus pandemic) and it is their "ethical duty" to look after their personals and avoid large scale job losses. He even stressed that this company is way more than just making profits.&nbsp;

Team Red Bull's principal Christian Horner also did not agree to the new budget planned.&nbsp;

Brawn said that a minimum World Championship needs at least eight races, and predicted that cars will be back on track by at least October.&nbsp;

"We could have a very enclosed environment where the teams come in on charters (flights), we channel them into the circuit, we make sure everyone's tested, cleared, there's no risk to anyone and we have a race without spectators.

"That's not great but I think it's still better than no racing at all.

"I think we have to remember there are millions of people that follow the sport sat at home... to be able to put on a sport and entertain people would be a huge bonus with this crisis we have."
