The Formula One circus pitches up in Barcelona this weekend for the Spanish Grand Prix with Red Bull's tantalising tilt at prising the spotlight away from showstoppers Mercedes topping the bill.

Three races in and against pre-season predictions it is Lewis Hamilton who leads Max Verstappen by eight points arriving at the fourth leg of the championship.

Wins last Sunday in Portugal and in the opener in Bahrain leave the seven-time champion in his customary habitat at the top of the F1 drivers' tree.

Barcelona is a track the teams know intimately as the usual venue for pre-season testing, and with its reputation as a circuit where overtaking opportunities are few and far between the onus will be on Saturday's qualifying to command a prime front row seat on Sunday's grid.

Hamilton is seeking his fifth consecutive win in Catalonia, with three of his last four victories delivered from pole.

Should he top the time sheets on Saturday he will celebrate his 100th pole position, after being denied that honour by his teammate Valtteri Bottas last weekend in Portimao.

Verstappen and Red Bull's emergence as serious title contenders not only has F1 fans gripping their sofas' arm rests or smart phones -- Mercedes chief Toto Wolff says he's enjoying the same sensation he felt at the first signs Mercedes could muscle in on the then Red Bull roadshow seven years ago.

"When we were behind in testing and in Bahrain, it's a buzz that I have not felt in the team since 2013 when we had that first sniff that we could be there," said Wolff. "The whole place is excited and continues to be excited. I'd like to be happy after Abu Dhabi at the end of the season but for the time being, we'll take it one step at a time."

While the 2021 Hamilton continues to display all the hallmarks that have turned him into a serial champion - often flawless race craft, consummate professionalism and steely focus, Verstappen this season has changed.

The Dutch driver seems to have his eye on the bigger picture, as F1's managing director Ross Brawn pointed out.

"It's clear that Max Verstappen is approaching this championship in a different way because he finally has a title-winning car," said Brawn.

"And it had to change because when you're a title contender, the focus has to be on consolidating when you're not the fastest and when opportunities such as a mechanical issue for a rival or a Safety Car present themselves, you must be in a position to strike."

Verstappen's boss at Red Bull Christian Horner is like his Mercedes counterpart Wolff lapping up the first proper inter-team title battle for some time.

"The picture is starting to clarify. Red Bull and Mercedes are the two standout teams, and Lewis and Max are the two standout drivers.

"It's incredibly tight. The biggest winner for that is Formula 1 – and if it goes like this for 23 races, it's going to be nip and tuck."

One driver who has special reason to approach this weekend's race with a spring in his step is Fernando Alonso.

The two-time champion is finally finding his feet with Alpine, formerly Renault, after his return to F1, scoring points for the second straight race in the Algarve sunshine.

"It was good, it was fun," said the veteran Spaniard ahead of his home grand prix.

"We were fighting with one McLaren, one Ferrari - things that were unthinkable in Imola or Bahrain. So I think we made a big step forward in terms of the car performance."

Alonso is in 12th in the drivers standings, nine places and 32 points behind Lando Norris, who has enjoyed a sensational start to 2021 for back-in-business McLaren with three top-five finishes.

Sensational is not how even Nikita Mazepin's most loyal followers would describe the Russian rookie's three first appearances in the fast lane.

A lap one crash in Bahrain, spins at Imola, and a dangerous block on Sergio Perez last Sunday suggest the young Haas driver will be just happy to reach Sunday night having crossed the line without any further mishaps.

Hamilton pursues 100th pole as 'nip and tuck' title battle arrives in Spain

Lewis Hamilton delivered a flawless drive in his Mercedes to win the Portuguese Grand Prix on Sunday from his arch title rival Max Verstappen.

Seven-time world champion Hamilton's 97th Grand Prix triumph extended his early season lead over Red Bull's Verstappen in the Formula One drivers' standings to eight points.

In third place in Portimao was pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas in the other Mercedes with Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull in fourth.

"That was such a tough race physically and mentally. I didn't get a good start and also lost out at the restart but it was a great result in the end," said Hamilton.

"Today wasn't all perfect and we need to get ready now for the quick turnaround for Spain."

At a sun-drenched Algarve International Circuit Bottas led Hamilton from the two Red Bulls into the first corner.

By the end of lap one it was the safety car which led after the two Alfa Romeos collided, with Kimi Raikkonen's front wing littered across the straight after clipping Antonio Giovinazzi's car.

Bottas carefully controlled the rolling restart on lap seven but in his rearview mirror he will have seen Verstappen charge past Hamilton and into second.

- 'Sitting duck' -

"That a boy" was the pleased reaction on the team radio from the Red Bull pits.

But four laps later and a mistake by the Dutchman on turn 14 let Hamilton regain second, darting past on the inside with Verstappen snapping: "I'm just a sitting duck on the straight. It's unbelievable."

Hamilton hit the front with a superb sweeping move past Bottas at the start of lap 20, quickly establishing daylight between the Mercedes men.

Verstappen was the first of the leading group to pit on lap 36, with Bottas next, followed by Hamilton, with Perez yet to change tyres, in front.

With 13 laps left Hamilton pushed past Perez to regain control of the third leg of the record 23-race season, and from there the race was his to lose.

"I think Max made a mistake at some point and that was perfect. With Valtteri I had to make the move early on before the tyres were destroyed and I just managed to get him at turn one. Right on my limit. Great race," added Hamilton.

"We were not on top of it here but we'll see what we can do in Barcelona," said Verstappen, referring to next weekend's race in Spain.

Intrigue in the closing stages surrounded the question of who would end up with a potentially crucial point for the fastest lap.

Verstappen thought he'd clinched it only for his effort to be ruled out due to track limits with Bottas eventually taking the honours.

The Red Bulls are emerging as serious challengers to Mercedes' supremacy but the world champions have evidently worked hard to redress any imbalance in performance between the two teams.

And after three legs of the season it is Hamilton in his quest for a record eighth world crown that has won twice, adding this to his opening success in Bahrain, with Verstappen the winner in Imola.

Sitting third in the drivers' standings is Lando Norris for resurgent McLaren after the Briton took fifth on Sunday.

He came in ahead of the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, with the Alpines of Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso, Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) and the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly completing the top 10.

Hamilton wins Portuguese Grand Prix for 97th career victory

Britain`s three current Formula One drivers, led by seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton, joined leading sports bodies on Friday in a growing boycott of social media to protest online abuse.

The soccer-led campaign has gathered momentum, spreading from clubs and leagues to national and international bodies in tennis, cricket, rugby and cycling.

European soccer body UEFA has said it will stay silent across its platforms over the weekend, starting at 1500 BST (1600 CEST) on Friday.

"To stand in solidarity with the football community, I will be going dark on my social media channels this weekend," said Hamilton, Formula One`s only Black driver, on Instagram where he has 22 million followers.

"There is no place in our society for any kind of abuse, online or not, and for too long it`s been easy for a small few to post hate from behind their screens.

"While a boycott might not solve this issue overnight, we have to call for change when needed, even when it seems like an almost impossible task," added the Mercedes driver, who is racing in Portugal this weekend.

McLaren`s Lando Norris, who has suffered abuse from online trolls and has a million followers on Twitter, said he was also supporting the boycott.

"Everyone struggles with abuse on here at some point and social media companies need to do more to tackle it," said the 21-year-old. "Hiding behind a keyboard is not okay. Enough is enough."

McLaren said the team was not planning to do a blackout, however.

"We think it`s very important for us over the course of a race weekend to have this positive engagement with our fans," team principal Andreas Seidl told reporters on a video call from Portimao.

Williams` George Russell, 23, said it was time to make a change.

"There is far too much online abuse, hatred, negativity, racism that is just undeserved," he said. "I thought it`s our duty to raise as much awareness as possible, not just in sport."

The Canadian Formula One Grand Prix, scheduled for June in Montreal, has been shelved due to the coronavirus pandemic and instead the race will be held in Turkey, officials said on Wednesday.

"Due to the health measures put in place to fight Covid-19, the Canadian Grand Prix has been canceled for a second consecutive year," Canadian authorities said in a statement.

"The event will return next year, however," and a deal has been reached between organisers and the governments of Canada and Quebec to extend its run by two years until 2031.

Formula One authorities confirmed in a short statement that because of the ongoing international travel restrictions in place in Canada, it had become impossible for anyone associated with the race to enter the country without a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

In its place this year, added Formula One, the Turkish Grand Prix will be held June 11-13.

“I want to thank the promoter and authorities in Canada for all of their efforts in recent weeks but the travel situation made our plans impossible," said Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula One, in a statement

"I equally want to thank the promoter and authorities in Turkey for their ongoing willingness to host a Formula One race."

The decision ends several weeks of uncertainty as to whether the Formula One paddock with its hundreds of staff flying in from overseas would be able to set up for the race.

Discussions had been underway between the authorities of Quebec and Canada on the possibility of organising the event behind closed doors or lifting the mandatory quarantine for visitors.

The Turkish GP, which will be held at Istanbul Park, featured in the 2020 calendar when Lewis Hamilton was crowned world champion for a record-equalling seventh time, having been a regular from 2005 to 2011.

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton says the conviction of a white former police officer for the killing of George Floyd "marks a new dawn in the fight for racial justice".

But the British racing driver warned it was just "one step" on the path towards a more equal society.

Derek Chauvin was found guilty on Tuesday of murdering African-American Floyd following a racially charged trial.

The 19-year veteran of the Minneapolis police force was seen on video kneeling on the neck of Floyd for more than nine minutes as he lay face down and handcuffed on the ground saying repeatedly "I can't breathe" in an incident last May.

Hamilton, who said he had been left furious by Floyd's death, last year equalled Michael Schumacher's record of seven world championships against the backdrop of his personal fight against racism.

The 36-year-old, the sole black driver on the F1 grid, wrote on Instagram: "JUSTICE for George! The emotions I feel right now are hard to describe. Derek Chauvin has been found guilty.

"This is the first time that a white officer has been convicted for killing a black man in Minnesota. This is monumental, George's death is not in vain.

"The result of the Derek Chauvin trial today is the right one. Convicting him of all three charges marks a new dawn in the fight for racial justice."

Hamilton, who continues to kneel ahead of races in a sign of his support for the campaign against racial injustice, said much work still needed to be done.

"This is just one step on the path towards a more equal society," he said. "Since George's death, so many other black people have died at the hands of the police and we must ensure the momentum of today continues. The fight isn't over."

F1 champion Lewis Hamilton hails 'justice' of Floyd murder verdict

The Miami Grand Prix will join the Formula One calendar from the 2022 season, organisers said on Sunday, in a 10-year deal that adds a second American race to the championship after the United States GP in Austin.

In a statement F1 said that the race will take place at a new track round the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens north of the Florida city.

"We are thrilled to announce that Formula 1 will be racing in Miami beginning in 2022," said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

"The US is a key growth market for us, and we are greatly encouraged by our growing reach in the US which will be further supported by this exciting second race."

He added it would be staged "in the second quarter of next year".

F1 said the track will be 5.41km long with high-speed straights which should allow top speeds of 320 km/h and "multiple overtaking opportunities".

The Hard Rock Stadium is the home of the team Miami Dolphins and also hosted the recent Miami Open tennis tournament.

Miami Dolphins chairman Tom Garfinkel, the managing partner of the Miami Grand Prix, said they had worked with specialist designers "to create a racetrack that we, Formula 1 and the FIA believe will provide great racing".

Controlled since 2017 by the American group Liberty Media, F1 was planning on having a Miami GP in 2019 but hit a roadblock with local authorities.

Initial plans to include a circuit that crossed a bridge over the city's bay were shelved after objections.

Garfinkel commented: "The first priority was to create a great race track, and with the Hard Rock site we have a blank sheet of paper to put together a race track that is demanding in a lot of ways and to put on great experiences that are uniquely reflective of the diversity of Miami.

- 'Latino community' -

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton backed the move.

"America is such a big place that it always felt like we needed at least two races there to integrate with the audience," the Mercedes driver said.

"The race can bring 4,000 jobs to communities in Miami. Montreal has always been my favourite to go to but Miami I think that's going to be the favourite spot to go to," added Hamilton, ahead of starting on pole for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola later Sunday.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who finished second to Hamilton in the 2021 season's opening race in Bahrain, said he was "excited" about the new GP.

"I'm sure if they build a good track, we can have a lot of fun out there and hopefully we'll bring a lot of excitement so the fans can of course enjoy the race," he said in a Red Bull statement.

His Mexican teammate Sergio Perez commented: "I think Miami is a great location for Formula One, it's a very fun city and there's lots of energy in that place.

"The Latino community is pretty big there so I'm definitely looking forward going there soon. I think Miami and F1 is the perfect combination."

Miami joins Austin, which has hosted Formula One Grand Prix since 2012, with this year's race in Texas scheduled for October 24.

Miami's arrival will give F1 a potent boost in its bid to compete with the more popular Indycar and NASCAR circuits in the United States.

F1's director of media rights Ian Holmes in February lauded the sport's growth in popularity in the United States, in part on the back of the Netflix F1 documentary series "Drive To Survive".

Miami joins F1 calendar in 2022 in push for US fan share

Lewis Hamilton claimed his 99th career pole position in qualifying Saturday for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez starting alongside the seven-time world champion's Mercedes at Imola.

Max Verstappen, runner-up to Hamilton at the season-opening race in Bahrain last month, will begin third on the grid in the other Red Bull as the top three were separated by less than one-tenth of a second.

"The day's been great obviously," said Hamilton. "I definitely didn't expect us to be ahead of the two Red Bulls. They've been so quick this weekend.

"There were times when they were six-tenths ahead and we didn't really know where we'd be. But the car was already feeling a lot better from the beginning this weekend."

"I knew going into qualifying and especially that last lap, it was going to take something special," he added.

"It really had to be the most perfect lap and a little bit more to beat the Red Bulls because they really have been so fast all weekend. And I didn't honestly know whether we could do it."

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified in fourth ahead of Pierre Gasly, Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris, who was heading for second but had his lap time deleted for exceeding track limits.

Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas could only manage eighth, with Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll rounding out the top 10.

Carlos Sainz failed to make it to Q3 and will start in 11th position in the second Ferrari.

Two-time former world champion Fernando Alonso was a disappointing 15th, six places behind Alpine team-mate Ocon.

Hamilton edged out Perez by 0.035 seconds, the Mexican in turn sneaking ahead of Verstappen by 0.052sec in just his second race with his new team.

"I didn't expect to be here but I should have been on pole - I did a mistake on my final corner, but tomorrow is what matters," said Perez, after securing his best qualifying position to date ahead of a 193rd Grand Prix start.

Verstappen admitted he paid for his mistake.

"Not so good in Q3. I went off at Turn Three, so a bit messy, not a good lap," he said.

"You can't be good every time, so we'll see what went wrong. It's still P3, which is a good starting position."

Japanese rookie Yuki Tsunoda, who impressed by coming ninth on his F1 debut in Bahrain, planted his Alpha Tauri into the wall coming out of a chicane in Q1 and will set off from the back on Sunday.

"First of all, the body feels OK - no issues," said the 20-year-old Tsunoda.

"Just pushing too much in entry. I had massive instability in entry, massive slap and couldn't control that car and just spun into the barrier.

"The car was amazing and it was just a huge mistake. Really sorry for the team, and I'm just going to have to come back tomorrow."

Hamilton earns 99th career pole at Emilia Romagna GP

Italy`s Imola circuit provides a fresh challenge for seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton and young pretender Max Verstappen as the pair prepare for round two of their Formula One battle this weekend.

The circuit, with the Santerno river running alongside and a verdant backdrop of trees and parkland, is a marked contrast to Bahrain`s desert Sakhir track that hosted the opener won by Mercedes` Hamilton.

The fast and flowing anti-clockwise layout is also narrower and bumpier than Bahrain, and with fewer opportunities to overtake which means track position and strategy will play a bigger part.

Red Bull`s Verstappen has started the last two races -- Abu Dhabi at the end of last season and then Bahrain in March -- on pole position and the 23-year-old will be looking to complete his hat-trick.

His car should be well-suited to the circuit characteristics, with the Honda engine also looking a match for Mercedes.

"I’m feeling really relaxed going into this race weekend in Imola, I’m looking forward to going back there," said Verstappen, who crashed out 12 laps from the end last year after a sudden rear tyre failure while in second place.

"We had a positive start to the season so hopefully we can keep that up but it won’t be easy and we need everything to work perfectly to beat our main competition."

Hamilton, winner last year at Imola after a two-day weekend without Friday practice, held off Verstappen against the odds in Bahrain after the Dutchman had dominated the weekend but Mercedes know they have some catching up to do.

"We may have won the first round, but we`re under no illusions that this will be a straightforward season," said team boss Toto Wolff.

"The car is still lacking pace over a single lap and Red Bull appear to have the edge right now. We`re pushing hard to close the gap, and this is a challenge we relish."

Hamilton`s team mate Valtteri Bottas, who took pole at Imola last year when the race returned after a 14-year absence, also has something to prove after finishing third in Bahrain.

So too does Mexican Sergio Perez, lining up for his second race as a Red Bull driver after going from last to fifth in Bahrain.

"I think it’s going to be very tight with Mercedes and we’re going to see if the fight is circuit related," said Perez.

"It will be interesting to see how we are in Imola, on a very different track to Bahrain, and see how we compare against them."

Imola is also a home race for Ferrari, with Spaniard Carlos Sainz racing in Italy for the first time since he moved to Maranello from McLaren, and Red Bull-owned Faenza-based AlphaTauri.

AlphaTauri`s Yuki Tsunoda, the Japanese who in Bahrain became the 65th rookie to score on his F1 debut, has tested at Imola and could again be one to watch.

The race, whose full title of `Formula One Grand Prix of Made in Italy and Emilia Romagna` is unlikely to be favoured much by television commentators, will again be held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hamilton and Verstappen take their battle to Imola

Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff said "track limits won the race for us" on Sunday after Lewis Hamilton claimed a sensational season-opening victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Wolff praised his team for their strategy to help set up a sublime triumphant drive from the defending seven-time world champion – but gave credit to a set of white lines at Turn Four.

It was there, with three laps remaining, that Max Verstappen ran beyond track limits as he passed Hamilton to take the lead, but on the instructions of the race director had to hand back the place immediately.

Hamilton held the lead and did not give Verstappen another chance as the pair provided a thrilling finale with the champion winning by seven-tenths of a second.

"Max made a tiny mistake there and he had to give the position back," said Wolff. "We were told suddenly during the race that track limits were imposed – and that is what won us the race today.

Hamilton agreed.

"If he (Verstappen) hadn't made a mistake he would have won the race," said the winner. "I had to really keep my head and mind set in the car and to make no mistakes."

"What a difficult race that was," added Hamilton. "Max was all over me right at the end, but I just about managed to hold him off. It was one of the hardest races I have had in a while."

"It was such a great fight, but this is not the end for them. They will hit back with a vengeance in the next race."

Wolff said Red Bull looked strong.

"For the first race, I think these guys are a tiny bit ahead of us.

"It was a great battle of strategies," Wolff said.

"We took a very bold move pitting so early with Lewis and we gained a position, but then we thought we are doing the same again to prevent the under-cut."

- 'I love the challenge' -

Hamilton also praised Mercedes for team strategy.

"Stopping early, we knew was going to be difficult, but we had to cover Max. They've had an amazing performance all weekend, so it was going to take something pretty special here."

Hamilton said he was relishing the prospect of a close battle with Verstappen all season.

"I definitely am. Each year they're talking about when you think you've hit your peak.

"I think timing is everything and it is going to take everything and more for us to put in performances like this, but we love the challenge. I love the challenge. I still love what I do.

"It was so hard in the car today, but what a great event and this is a really good start for us. Through testing we thought we were going to be six to eight tenths behind, so the work that has gone on this week has been spectacular.

"We came into this race on the back foot, knowing it would be a tough start, but everyone worked hard to maximise what we had. It was heads down for everyone. I am so proud of everybody.

Hamilton's first win this season increased his career record total to 96 wins – 75 of them with Mercedes. He also passed Michael Schumacher's record of laps led in a race and recorded the 300th win by a British driver.

White lines saved Hamilton, says Mercedes boss

Sebastian Vettel is set to kick off his Formula One campaign with Aston Martin on Sunday, however, he will start from the back of the field after being handed a five-place grid drop and three penalty points at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

According to Stewards, Vettel failed to respect double yellow warning flags at turn one in Saturday's qualifying. Former Ferrari, who qualified at 18th was dropped to last due to the penalty.

"He (Vettel) explained to the Stewards that he saw the smoke ahead of him, but was unsure if it was a lock-up or a stopped car until he was quite close to the car and the smoke was lifting," they added.

"The driver would have received a warning on his dash and the team should have been able to see that the sector had been a double yellow and could have advised the driver as other teams did.

"While the argument that the driver was already inside the sector when it went double yellow evokes sympathy, the Stewards feel it is important to note that he was approaching an incident visible ahead of him."

The 33-year-old German joined Aston Martin to get back to winning ways after a disappointing stint with Ferrari.

Aston Martin's Sebastian Vettel to kick-off F1 season with grid drop and penalty points

Lewis Hamilton said on Thursday he has been "educating" himself and has "taken steps in private to raise issues" over allegations of human rights abuses in countries where the Formula One circus operates, including this weekend's season-opener in Bahrain.

The 36-year-old seven-time world champion led anti-racism protests on the grid last season, regularly taking a knee before the start of each race.

However, as the new Formula One season kicks off, calls have been made by a coalition of 22 human rights groups for the sport to carry out an independent inquiry into allegations of abuses associated with the Bahrain Grand Prix.

A letter sent to F1 chiefs cites, for example, claims that an 11-year-old boy was arrested for joining protests against last season's race in the Gulf kingdom.

The Guardian newspaper said Hamilton as well as F1's new chief executive, Stefano Domenicali had both received copies of the letter.

Hamilton on Thursday referred to receiving letters from human rights campaigners and alleged victims of torture in Bahrain – asking him to speak out on their behalf.

He has raised questions about the inclusion of a Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on this year's record 23-race calendar.

"It's the first time I received letters like that, so I've taken the last few months to try and educate myself -- because coming here all these years I wasn't aware of all of the details of human rights issues," said Hamilton at a pre-season news conference.

He added he had spoken to human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, and taken steps in private to raise the issues.

"I don't want to say too much that may jeopardise any progress," he added.

"But I am definitely committed to helping in any way I can."

He said human rights should not be treated as a political issue.

"I don't think that we should be going to these countries and just ignoring what is happening -- and arriving, having a great time, and then leave."

- 'Zero tolerance' -

However, the Bahrain government later Thursday hit back, claiming they have a "zero-tolerance policy towards mistreatment of any kind".

"A range of institutional and legal reforms have been implemented in close collaboration with international governments and independent experts," said a government spokesperson.

"(These include) the establishment of a wholly independent Ombudsman – the first of its kind in the region – which will fully and independently investigate any allegation of mistreatment."

They added: "Furthermore, the National Institute for Human Rights – created with the assistance of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights – has independent oversight of promoting and protecting human rights within the kingdom."

Meanwhile, Hamilton said he plans to continue taking a knee this year, hoping it will provoke an uncomfortable conversation about equality and send a signal that he is listening to and representing the black community.

"I can't ignore the fact that last year weighed heavily on me," he said.

"As I get older, I am understanding more. I think we all went through an educational phase last year and we're all learning more."

"I plan to continue to take the knee because I think what's really important is when young children are watching what we're doing here in this sport and when they see us take the knee, they will sit and ask their parents or their teachers 'why are they doing that? What are they taking the knee for?'."

"It sparks an uncomfortable conversation. It's a fight that will continue for a long time."

Hamilton 'educates' himself as Bahrain GP under fire over alleged rights abuses

Mick Schumacher's famous name may have helped him to accelerate through motor racing's lower levels, but it will also add pressure when he makes his Formula One debut on Sunday.

Mick, son of seven-time world champion Michael, will drive for US team Haas in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Schumacher, 22, earned his chance by winning the Formula Three European championship in 2018 and the Formula Two title in 2020.

His famous name has helped make it easier for Haas to find funding, but the young German's longer-term career plan seems clear.

Mick is part of the academy at Ferrari, where his father won five of his seven world titles.

Haas and Ferrari each pay half of Mick Schumacher's salary and, if he proves himself, he seems destined to eventually race in the famous red of the Maranello-based company.

"The name Schumacher is a brand, but it is a brand linked to the first name Michael," Herve Bodinier, a sports marketing professional and Formula 1 expert, told AFP.

"Ferrari and the others are not patrons, Mick will have to write his own story."

A thick veil of mystery surrounds the current health of Michael Schumacher.

The 52-year-old has not been seen in public since a skiing accident in the French Alps in 2013, witnessed by Mick, left the Formula One legend with severe brain injuries.

Now, 15 years after his father last raced for Ferrari, Mick will bring one of the most famous names in motorsport back to Formula One.

The hype has been building for weeks.

According to a survey, 35 percent of Sky Germany's subscribers say they will watch more Formula One if Mick Schumacher is at the wheel.

The German broadcaster has based its entire pre-season advertising around the German, who turned 22 last Monday.

- Family footsteps -

"His arrival is already a boost for Formula One, his name is attracting a lot of attention, and the whole series is benefiting from it," admitted Stefano Domenicali, the Formula One boss who is close to the Schumacher family.

However, Schumacher has been warned that his surname carries extra pressure.

"It's not easy to be a 'son of'," 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg, who won the Formula One title 34 years after his father Keke Rosberg, told Sport1.

"At the beginning the media attention on him will be even bigger than on (defending champion) Lewis Hamilton."

Since his first laps in karting, the media have always taken an interest in Schumacher.

He came through the ranks of Formula Three and Two shielded by a management team who made it taboo for reporters to ask about his father's health.

"He has forged a shell, he has a good family and has turned his dramatic story into a strength," said Bodinier.

- "Give him time" -

Being a Schumacher has helped.

"His name certainly opens doors for him," said Ross Brawn, Formula One's managing director and close friend of the Schumacher family, "but it also puts a lot of pressure on him, without a doubt."

On the down side, the extra attention has the potential to rob Schumacher of the space and time needed to develop at the top level.

"He deserved this promotion. He has reached the level of a Formula One driver by his own strength, not because of his name," said Domenicali.

"Now we have to give him time to grow, to learn... and to follow a normal progression curve."

"He has forged a shell, he has a good family and has turned his dramatic story into a strength," said Bodinier. - "Give him time" - Being a Schumacher has helped. "His name certainly opens doors for him," said Ross Brawn, Formula One's managing director and close friend of the Schumacher family, "but it also puts a lot of pressure on him, without a doubt." On the down side, the extra attention has the potential to rob Schumacher of the space and time needed to develop at the top level. "He deserved this promotion. He has reached the level of a Formula One driver by his own strength, not because of his name," said Domenicali. "Now we have to give him time to grow, to learn... and to follow a normal progression curve."

Spotlight on Schumacher as famous name returns to Formula One

World champion Lewis Hamilton saw Max Verstappen top the times in Formula One testing on Sunday and predicted the Dutch star's Red Bull team will be "a different animal" when the season starts in two weeks' time.

Verstappen, who was third behind Hamilton and the Briton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas in the 2020 championship, timed a best lap of 1:28.960 on Sunday.

That proved to be the fastest time of the three-day session.

However, rookie Yuki Tsunoda, the first Japanese driver to compete in Formula One since Kamui Kobayashi in 2014, also laid down a marker.

His time on Sunday of 1:29.053 in his AlphaTauri was the second best overall of the week.

Verstappen had also topped the charts on Friday on the opening day at the dusty Sakhir circuit which will also stage the season opener on March 28.

"They are looking strong," said seven-time champion Hamilton.

"They're going to be a different machine or animal this year with, I think, a really good, strong line-up for two drivers and a really good car."

However, Hamilton insisted he was unconcerned as Verstappen had won the last race of 2020 in Abu Dhabi and had momentum on his side.

"Having seen them winning the last race you can only assume they're going to be right there if not at the front, at the first race.

"It's going to be a great, long battle with them through the year," he added.

Verstappen, too, was keen to douse expectations that this could be the year that Red Bull break Mercedes' stranglehold.

"I don't think we are the favourites," Verstappen said.

Carlos Sainz, in a Ferrari, Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen and Hamilton rounded out the top five on Sunday in what also proved to be their top times of the week.

The Canadian billionaire, who made his fortune in fashion, told Reuters the introduction of a budget cap this season and a fairer distribution of revenues could make the dream come true.

"If (F1 owners) Liberty had not brought in the rules of the new budget cap, and the new cash distribution, I would never have made the investment and acquired a Formula One team," he said.

"With this new budget cap, it makes these teams profitable. We’re all playing on a level playing field, it’s not that two or three teams are outspending and therefore more competitive."

Taking the Schumacher surname back into Formula One this season will be more a source of pride than pressure, Michael's son Mick said on Thursday.

The 21-year-old German, whose Ferrari great father won seven world championships including five with the Italian team, makes his F1 race debut with Haas in Bahrain on March 28.

"I'm very happy to carry that surname, and I'm very happy to carry that name back into Formula One, and I'm very proud of it," he told reporters on a video call as Haas unveiled their new Ferrari-powered car.

"It's like a boost for me and it gives me motivation every single day."

Haas scored only three points last year and finished ninth of 10 teams.

They are already more focused on 2022, when the rules change, and Schumacher -- last year's Formula Two champion and a Ferrari Academy driver -- could be facing a difficult year among the backmarkers.

Schumacher said he would be pushing to improve his performance in every race with the simple target of doing the best he possibly could.

One immediate hurdle he has had to overcome has been the factory seat fitting, with travel restrictions and quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic making that a time-consuming undertaking.

"It hasn't been easy, travelling to England has been very restricted," he said.

"We've had a plan and then the rules changed and I had to self-quarantine, so I had to find a spot where I could give up 10 days basically to give myself the room to go to the team for one and a half days."

He said the seat fitting started at 0800 and finished at 2230 but it was worth it.

"It feels good... a seat is always very special," he added. "I'm pretty sure I've got a good seat."

Schumacher name gives me motivation every day, says Mick

The Mercedes Formula One team despite seven successive constructors titles possesses the "same fire, hunger and passion" says team principal Toto Wolff as when he arrived in 2013.

The 49-year-old Austrian's remarks came as the team launched its car for the 2021 season, one which they hope will culminate in Lewis Hamilton winning a record eighth drivers' title.

The Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance builds on the solid base of its predecessor but includes considerable aerodynamic changes alongside improvements to areas as such as the suspension, cooling system and Power Unit.

It will be seen on the track for the first time in pre-season testing in Bahrain on March 12.

Bahrain kicks off the season with their Grand Prix on March 28.

Wolff says the dominance of Mercedes is not damaging to the sport as there are plenty of 'sub plots' surrounding other drivers such as Jos Verstappen.

However, he says Mercedes are not going to be caught napping by lowering their standards for their drive remains as strong as ever.

"Every year we reset our focus and define the right objectives," said Wolff in a Mercedes statement to mark the launch of the new car.

"That may sound simple but it's damn hard and is probably why there are no sports teams out there with seven consecutive titles.

"So many things can happen and it's very natural to get used to success, and therefore not fight as hard for it.

"But this team has not shown any of that."

- 'Very long journey' -

Wolff said Hamilton and Finnish team-mate Valtteri Bottas as well as the rest of the staff always have new challenges which keeps them motivated.

"I see the same fire, hunger and passion now as I did the first time I walked through the doors in 2013," he said.

"Every season presents a new challenge and therefore, a new goal for us to achieve.

"2021 brings changes to the regulations, which could impact our competitiveness, plus the cost cap and working on the major rule changes of 2022.

"These challenges excite us."

One of Hamilton's crusades has been to promote and develop more diversity in the sport.

As a result the black base livery remains for a second season "to underline the team's commitment to improving diversity and inclusion within the team and our sport".

Wolff said the team had set itself targets to back up its words with actions.

"We've set ourselves the goal of at least 25 percent of all new starters coming from under-represented groups for the next five years," he said.

"The latest step is a joint foundation that we will create together with Lewis to improve all aspects of diversity in motorsport.

"All of these measures are encouraging, but we know that real change takes time and we're at the start of a very long journey.

"So, this topic will very much remain in our focus for years to come as we build on the foundations we've laid over the past few months."

Lewis Hamilton-Mercedes agree new contract for 2021

Formula One’s Australian Grand Prix has been postponed to November while China’s race has been put on hold indefinitely as COVID-19 forced the 2021 calendar shuffle on Tuesday. While the Australian GP, usually the season-opener, was delayed from March to November, no new date has been given for the Chinese GP, which is normally held in April.

The latest development means a second consecutive season of F1 has been disrupted by the dreaded virus, which was delayed and cut short into 17 races last year.

Formula One 2021 will now commence in Bahrain on March 28, a week later than the originally scheduled start in Melbourne.

"The global pandemic has not yet allowed life to return to normal, but we showed in 2020 that we can race safely as the first international sport to return," F1 president Stefano Domenicali said in a statement.

Many of the F1 teams are based in England where COVID-19 cases are surging due to a more infectious new variant, further complicating the matter.

The Australian GP was called off in 2020, hours before the first practice session of the year as one McLaren team member tested positive for coronavirus. The pandemic resulted in organisers reducing the 2020 season to just 17 events from the usual 22 races.

Australia have been successful in suppressing the virus and has held major sporting events including India’s ongoing cricket tour and next month’s Australian Open. However, the travel restrictions remain a major hurdle for the athletes.

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto expects Mick Schumacher to have a tough Formula One debut with Haas next year before getting more up to speed in 2022.

Schumacher, the son of Ferrari great and seven times F1 world champion Michael, won the Formula Two title this year and has graduated to the U.S.-owned team with close ties to Maranello.

Haas scored only three points this season and ended up ninth of the 10 teams.

"I think it will be very difficult for him at the start," Binotto told reporters in a video conference when asked what he expected from the 21-year-old Ferrari Academy driver.

"If I look at his past experience in both F2 and F3, normally he is delivering his best in the second season and not the first.

"I think Mick, the way he has developed himself, is learning a lot on the first season and becomes very strong in the second half of the second season. That’s why I think two seasons will be important for him.

"But already on the second I’m expecting to see progress compared to the first one."

Ferrari have held open the possibility of Schumacher one day racing for them but they have Charles Leclerc on a long-term contract while Spaniard Carlos Sainz has signed an initial two-year deal that could be extended.

They also have close ties with Swiss-based Alfa Romeo, who could also be a future destination for Schumacher after Haas, depending on progress.

Binotto said he wanted to see Schumacher getting progressively faster.

"I’m really expecting him to prove how fast he is in an F1 context, both qualifying and the race...to prove that he is very strong in race pace and consistent in terms of bringing the car home in a good position," he said.

Ferrari have strengthened their ties with Haas ahead of next season, with their chassis engineering head Simone Resta transferring across.

Binotto said more Ferrari personnel would follow Resta out as the team is forced to shed staff to meet the terms of a budget cap being introduced next year.

"A few other technicians will move, reducing our organisation which is required for the budget cap but strengthening the organisation of our customers and partner teams," he said.

Those transferred to Haas would remain at Maranello but working out of a completely separate facility with no access to the main Ferrari building, Binotto added.

Sergio Perez to race for Red Bull in F1 2021 season

Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton is hoping to have his future sorted by Christmas now that the Formula One season is over.

The most successful driver in the history of the sport and his Mercedes team, winner of both titles for an unprecedented seventh year in succession, still have to sit down and put pen to paper.

Hamilton is otherwise out of contract in a few weeks’ time.

The issue, even if it looks a foregone conclusion, is the biggest question of several remaining to be answered around the paddock.

“I plan to be here next year. I want to be here next year,” said Hamilton, 35, after finishing third in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi finale.

“Us, as a team, have more to do together and more to achieve both in the sport but even more outside the sport I think. I hope we can begin discussions this week and hopefully get it tied up before Christmas.”

The Briton had put off talks while he focused on the championship and then COVID-19 got in the way, with Hamilton testing positive in Bahrain and going into 10 days of quarantine.

Team boss Toto Wolff said there was no concern.

“It is going to happen. There is no reason it shouldn’t happen now,” he told reporters.

“We’ll have this conversation. We always said that we will do it after the title was won and then the virus delayed us for another 10 days, two weeks and now we just have to sit down, maybe virtually or maybe live.”

Championship runners-up Red Bull must decide who is going to partner Sunday’s race winner Max Verstappen next season with Thai racer Alexander Albon the incumbent but Mexican Sergio Perez in the frame.

Team boss Christian Horner said Albon’s performance in Abu Dhabi was probably his “strongest collective weekend of the season.

“That now gives us a complete set of information to go away and analyse and work out what we are going to do. It’s not going to take too long,” he added.

Williams’s new U.S.-based owners Dorilton Capital have to decide the team’s leadership structure after ending the season under acting principal Simon Roberts.

“We’re working on that right now but I can’t say anything about it this weekend,” Roberts said in Abu Dhabi. “Lots of discussion with Dorilton and when we’re ready we’ll be able to announce how we intend to move forward.”

Ferrari are meanwhile looking for a replacement for CEO Louis Camilleri after he announced his sudden retirement last week for personal reasons.

Haas have private business with Russian driver Nikita Mazepin after condemning the posting of a video on his social media of a female passenger being groped in the back of a car.

“It is still in my pending tray,” said team boss Guenther Steiner.

Formula One, under the new leadership of Stefano Domenicali from January, has also an April 25 slot on the 2021 calendar to fill and no shortage of candidates for a date originally set aside for Vietnam’s now-postponed debut.

Hamilton contract top of the agenda now F1 season is done

Four times Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel bowed out of Ferrari on Sunday with one last, slightly wobbly, song of thanks over the radio in Italian and a large trophy as a parting gift.

The German, who had hoped to emulate boyhood hero and Ferrari great Michael Schumacher when he arrived at Maranello, finished 14th in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and one place behind team mate Charles Leclerc.

“Grazie Seb,” was written on a pit board as the team assembled for a group photo accompanied by a large Champions League-style trophy celebrating Vettel’s 14 wins in six years in Italy.

Vettel, who is joining Aston Martin (the renamed Racing Point) next season, ranks third on the list of Ferrari’s all-time winners and is the most successful not to win a championship with them.

He also notched up 12 poles and 55 podiums for the Italian team as well as 14 fastest laps.

“It was an emotional day with the mechanics waving goodbye on the grid. I felt there was a different dynamic and tension there,” the German, who won his titles with Red Bull from 2010-13, told reporters.

“I am sad for the guys, I will miss them but also happy to embark on a new journey.”

After the race he gave a farewell rendition of ‘Azzurro’, a popular 1960s song by Adriano Celentano, on his slowing down lap.

“Every time I was really excited for some reason (at Ferrari) I started to sing and I think it was a nice way for one last time to sing again,” he said.

“I changed the lyrics so I hope I don’t get in trouble with copyright. I think it was a good way to express my gratitude for the team.”

Vettel said the trophy took him by surprise: “I’ve never finished P14 before and got a trophy so it was definitely a nice memory.”

He added that he had no regrets, but would miss the many friends he had made.

“I have learned so much from this team and they have given me so much. I am very grateful for that,” he said.

The pandemic-hit 2020 season, with Ferrari slumping to sixth overall and their worst performance in 40 years, was a poor reflection on the great times they had together, he added.

“I think nothing about today should get mentioned,” said the 33-year-old, whose lows have been more frequent than the highs of late.

“I think it was quite a bad and poor race from us but I enjoyed it.”

Lewis Hamilton wrapped up the Formula One season in Abu Dhabi on Sunday with his 165th podium finish and the after-effects of COVID-19 making themselves felt on his aching body. The seven-times world champion, who missed last weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain after contracting the new coronavirus, said the race had been a physical challenge and he was glad it was over. “Considering the past couple of weeks I’ve had I’m really generally happy with the weekend,” the Mercedes driver, who clinched his record-equalling seventh title in Turkey last month, told reporters. “That was a really hard race for me, physically. All year, physically I have been fine but today I definitely wasn’t. So, I’m just glad it’s over.” Hamilton finished third in a processional race, behind second-placed team mate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull’s winner Max Verstappen. The most successful driver in the history of the sport had said on arrival in Abu Dhabi that he was not 100%, still feeling the effects of the virus in his lungs. Asked whether that had impacted on the race, Hamilton said it had. “Massively. I don’t think I’ve ever been so blown. My body is not feeling great,” he said. “But look on the bright side: I made it through and you know, I didn’t think any time last week I would be here so I am truly grateful for my health and to be alive. “Looking forward to recovering over the next period of time we have and getting back into training and get my body back to where I know it should be.” Third place meant Hamilton, who also started third, was unable to add to the 11 wins he has celebrated this season -- equalling the most he has ever won in a single year.

Hurting Hamilton wraps up the season with pain and a podium

Max Verstappen led Alexander Albon in a Red Bull one-two in the final practice session of the Formula One season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Saturday, as dominant Mercedes found themselves in unfamiliar territory.

Dutchman Verstappen lapped the Yas Marina track in one minute, 36.251 seconds, 0.501 seconds clear of his British-born Thai team mate Albon.

Daniel Ricciardo was third for Renault with his team mate Esteban Ocon in fourth.

World champion Lewis Hamilton, back in action after missing last week’s Sakhir Grand Prix due to COVID-19, was the lead Mercedes in sixth, 0.761 seconds slower than Verstappen.

Team mate Valtteri Bottas, who had set the fastest time on Friday, was ninth.

Mercedes, running a special livery with the names of about 2,000 team personnel on their cars, have taken pole in Abu Dhabi every year since 2014. They have started every race but one this season from the front of the grid.

Hamilton indicated on Friday that the Brackley-based team, who this year wrapped up a record seventh straight title double, could use Saturday’s hour-long session to run their cars on higher fuel loads, suggesting normal order could be restored come qualifying.

Lando Norris was fifth for McLaren ahead of Hamilton, who has wrapped up a record-equalling seventh title.

Lance Stroll was seventh for Racing Point ahead of Carlos Sainz in the other McLaren.

Sergio Perez, winner in Sakhir last week who is set to start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid thanks to engine-related penalties, rounded out the top 10 for Racing Point.

George Russell, who stood in for Hamilton in Sakhir and nearly won the race, was 15th on his Williams return behind Sebastian Vettel who took part in his final practice session for Ferrari.

Camilleri was appointed in July 2018 as a replacement for Sergio Marchionne who was unwell and died days later. Camilleri himself recently got out of the hospital after being infected by severe COVID-19.

During his tenure, he brought in current team boss Mattia Binotto to replace Maurizio Arrivabene and this year deciding not to retain four-time champion, Sebastian Vettel, next season.

“Ferrari has been a part of my life and serving as its chief executive has been a great privilege,” said Camilleri in a statement issued by Ferrari.

“My admiration for the extraordinary men and women of Maranello and for the passion and dedication they apply to everything they do, knows no bounds.

“I’m proud of the company’s numerous achievements since 2018 and know that Ferrari’s best years are still to come.”

It has been a terrible season for Ferrari this year as they failed to win even a single race. In 2019, the team generated controversy by using an irregular power unit.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen pipped Valtteri Bottas to top the timesheets in Friday’s opening Formula One practice session for the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton made a quiet return to action.

The Dutchman set a time of one minute, 37.378 seconds to go 0.034 seconds quicker than Bottas with Hamilton 1.3 seconds slower in fifth.

The 35-year-old Hamilton, who missed last week’s Sakhir Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19, suffered brake problems that sent him back to the garage just three laps after he hit the track.

The Briton was back out with half the 90-minute session still to run.

Yet Hamilton, who has already wrapped up a record-equalling seventh world title, set his best time on the slowest hard tyres compared to the quickest softs used by Verstappen and Bottas.

Frenchman Esteban Ocon, fresh from having secured his maiden Formula One podium last week in Sakhir, was third for Renault.

Red Bull’s Alexander Albon, who spun on what would have been his quickest lap, was fourth.

Lance Stroll was sixth for Racing Point ahead of team mate Sergio Perez.

The Mexican, who celebrated an emotional first Formula One win last week, is carrying power unit-related penalties and is set to start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid.

Daniil Kvyat was eighth for AlphaTauri ahead of team mate Pierre Gasly.

Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top-10 for Alfa Romeo.

Mick Schumacher, son of seven-times champion Michael, made his grand prix weekend debut, taking over Kevin Magnussen’s Haas. The 21-year-old German, who will make his race debut with the U.S.-owned team next year, was 18th.

George Russell, who stood in for Hamilton in Sakhir and nearly won on his Mercedes debut, was back in his Williams. The Briton was 16th.

Daniel Ricciardo's Renault stopped on the track with a fuel pressure problem in an otherwise uneventful session, which teams largely used as a test to try out minor tweaks to the rules that are set to come in next year.

Verstappen edges Bottas in Abu Dhabi practice as Hamilton makes quiet return

Haas driver Romain Grosjean will miss the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to return home to Switzerland where he will receive on-going medical treatment on the burns he suffered on the back of his hands at the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Formula 1 team announced on Sunday.

Pietro Fittipaldi, currently subbing for Grosjean at the Sakhir Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit, will compete again for Haas alongside teammate Kevin Magnussen in Abu Dhabi, December 11-13.

"It is with great sadness that I will not be able to do my final race in Abu Dhabi and be with the team there. We have tried as much as we could with the doctor to recover and to repair my hand, but the risk of racing is too big for my recovery and my health. So, the decision was made that I am not going to race," Grosjean said in a statement.

"It is one of the hardest decisions of my life, but it is obviously one of the wisest. I will miss the team, but I will be supporting them as ever," he added.

That means Bahrain will be his last Grand Prix, in what was his 98th appearance for American team Haas having been with them since the beginning of their F1 project.

"I am naturally very sorry that Romain will miss what was going to be his final race with Haas F1 Team. But we are all in agreement that he has to take the best course of action regarding his treatment and recovery from last Sunday`s incident," stated Guenther Steiner, team principal Haas F1 Team.

"Romain has shown exceptional bravery and amazing spirit over the last few days - we know how badly he wanted to be able to return to the cockpit of the VF-20 in Abu Dhabi. And we all would have loved him to have been there too," he added.

Grosjean will miss Abu Dhabi GP to focus on recovery

Formula One driver Romain Grojean is on the path to recovery after suffering a horrific crash, arguably one of the worst in the history of F1 on Sunday.

The blazing crash left the Frenchman receiving hospital treatment for burns as he defied all the odds to jump out of the burning car following a crash in the Bahrain Grand Prix, which was won by the record-breaker Lewis Hamilton.

Grosjean talked about his injury.

"Right now, my priority is letting my hands heal and making sure I recover as soon as possible," Grosjean told AFP.

"My left hand is fairly damaged but my right hand is alright. My left ankle and left knee are a bit swollen, and I have a sprained ankle, but that's nothing to worry about. Right now, my priority is letting my hands heal and making sure I recover as soon as possible, in time for Abu Dhabi (to watch the Grand Prix on December 13 - ed.) if I can, but mainly for the 50, 55 years I have left to live!" he added.

Grosjean lost control of his car after colliding with the front left wheel of Daniil Kvyat’s Alpha Tauri in what was an intense battle for position at Turn Three of the opening lap. Grosjean, travelling at 250 km/h, hammered into the steel guardrails which buckled immediately. Trapped in his cockpit, Grosjean flew under the steel barrier as his car burst into flames.

Analysts said that his car’s safety had saved his life as he careered through the barrier before F1’s medical team and marshals with fire extinguishers helped him escape. Grosjean is doing fine and received some minor burns for which he is being treated at a hospital.
