Formula 1 in 2025 wasn’t just a championship; it was a reckoning. Old certainties crumbled, new stars seized control, and even the sport’s most powerful institutions discovered they were no longer untouchable. From Lewis Hamilton’s uneasy Ferrari chapter to Lando Norris finally claiming the crown in a three-way title war, the season unfolded like a slow-burning thriller that refused to offer easy endings.<h2>Hamilton and Ferrari: When legacy met reality</h2>Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari was supposed to be poetic, history’s most successful driver finishing his career at the sport’s most iconic team. Instead, it became one of the year’s most uncomfortable storylines. The adaptation never quite happened. Ferrari’s car philosophy demanded a driving style Hamilton struggled to fully embrace, and strategic missteps only deepened the frustration. While flashes of brilliance reminded the paddock why he is a seven-time world champion, consistency eluded both driver and team. The marriage of two giants, rather than reigniting glory, exposed how unforgiving modern F1 has become, even to legends.<h2>The Championship fight: Three drivers, one point of no return</h2>For the first time in years, the title battle went down to the wire—and then some. Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Max Verstappen entered the final stretch separated by margins so fine that every lap, every pit stop, and every radio call felt decisive. Verstappen, the benchmark of the ground-effect era, was no longer cruising. McLaren’s relentless development turned Norris and Piastri into genuine title threats, and suddenly Red Bull looked vulnerable. Norris brought maturity and composure; Piastri brought ice-cold precision; Verstappen brought defiance and experience. But it was Norris who blinked least. Race after race, he maximised results without self-destruction, finally shedding the “nearly man” tag that had followed him for years.<h2>Lando Norris: From promise to champion</h2>When Norris sealed the championship, it felt inevitable, and overdue. His title wasn’t built on dominance alone, but on growth: better tyre management, calmer decision-making, and leadership within McLaren. He didn’t just win races; he controlled narratives. In doing so, Norris became a symbol of Formula 1’s generational shift. The future had arrived, and it was no longer asking for permission.<h2>Piastri and Verstappen: The ones who pushed it there</h2>Oscar Piastri emerged as the sport’s most complete young driver. Clinical, unflappable, and devastatingly efficient, he took the fight to his teammate without fear or favour, proof that McLaren’s internal harmony was built on merit, not hierarchy. Verstappen, meanwhile, reminded everyone why champions are defined by resistance as much as victory. Even as Red Bull’s advantage eroded, he dragged the fight deeper into the season than many believed possible, refusing to surrender the throne quietly.<h2>Tsunoda, Lawson, and Red Bull’s reset</h2>Away from the front, Red Bull’s driver politics took another controversial turn. Yuki Tsunoda, after years of proving growth and resilience, found himself sidelined once again, this time for Liam Lawson. The decision reignited long-standing criticism of Red Bull’s driver management culture: ruthless, impatient, and often contradictory. Lawson impressed, but Tsunoda’s treatment raised uncomfortable questions about fairness, loyalty, and what Red Bull truly values beyond raw speed.<h2>The fall of Christian Horner</h2>The most seismic moment came off track. Christian Horner’s sacking marked the end of an era, one defined by dominance, control, and controversy. Once the most powerful team principal in Formula 1, Horner’s exit symbolised Red Bull’s internal reset after a year of turbulence, scrutiny, and shifting power dynamics. His departure didn’t just close a chapter at Red Bull; it signalled that no individual, however successful, is bigger than the sport anymore.<h2>A season that changed Formula 1</h2>The 2025 season wasn’t about one driver or one team. It was about transition, of power, of belief, and of identity. Formula 1 moved decisively into a new era, one where youth challenges legacy, stability is never guaranteed, and even giants must adapt or fall. And if this year proved anything, it’s this: the future of Formula 1 has arrived—and it’s brutally competitive.

Ferrari president asks Hamilton to 'focus on driving and talk less' after driver's 'nightmare' jibe post Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Lando Norris extended his lead in the drivers' world championship to nine points on Saturday when, after his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri crashed out, he won the sprint race at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. His victory by eight-tenths of a second ahead of Mercedes' teenage Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli earned him eight points to lift him to 365 points in the title race ahead of Piastri on 356 and four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who finished fourth, on 326.Norris was 0.845 seconds ahead of a feisty Antonelli at the chequered flag with George Russell third in the second Mercedes ahead of Verstappen, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso.&nbsp;Piastri lost control and hit the barriers on lap six of the 24-lap race at a slippery Interlagos circuit, damaging his car and his title hopes after losing his leadership of the championship two weeks ago in Mexico. The race in mixed conditions ended with another spectacular accident when local hero Gabriel Bortoleto hit the barriers heavily twice in his Sauber at the Senna Esses on the final lap, losing both front and rear wings. He was unhurt. "It was tough," said Norris.&nbsp;“So it is more rewarding to win like this, especially with Kimi there not making my life easy. I had to push and it was a bit sketchy and a struggle at the end on the soft tyres. We have some homework to do before qualifying.” Antonelli said: "It was a fun race in very trick conditions and we tried to keep the pressure on Lando, but just came up short."&nbsp;After heavy rain earlier, the race began in drying air with temperatures of 23 (air) and 26 (track) and a keen gusty wind, causing a mixture of soft and medium tyres to be selected in the treacherous conditions. Norris made a clean start but then Piastri, running third, took the kerb at turn three and went spinning off at the Curva do Sol, his trajectory taking Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine's Franco Colapinto with him as they followed his line five laps later. A safety car was deployed immediately, quickly followed by a red flag on lap eight.<h2>‘Put that behind me’</h2>Hulkenberg succeeded in guiding his damaged car back to the pits for repairs – a new front and rear wing - and was permitted to rejoin the fray once the barriers were repaired. But for Piastri it was not only a second consecutive pointless sprint race, but also a costly setback to his title challenge on a day when he hoped to restrict Norris’s advantage. After a 24-minute hiatus, during which several drivers including Norris, on softs, changed tyres, the race resumed with a rolling start for lap nine. Norris, again, advanced with aplomb.&nbsp;For Piastri, whose early-season consistency has crumbled in recent weeks, it was another session to forget."I am trying to put that behind me," he said. "Let's see what sort of weather we are going to have this afternoon – and of course there are a lot more points tomorrow. "I will try to do a better job in qualifying and get a better starting sport for the race." His victory by eight-tenths of a second ahead of Mercedes' teenage Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli earned him eight points to lift him to 365 points in the title race ahead of Piastri on 356 and four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who finished fourth, on 326. Norris was 0.845 seconds ahead of a feisty Antonelli at the chequered flag with George Russell third in the second Mercedes ahead of Verstappen, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. Piastri lost control and hit the barriers on lap six of the 24-lap race at a slippery Interlagos circuit, damaging his car and his title hopes after losing his leadership of the championship two weeks ago in Mexico. The race in mixed conditions ended with another spectacular accident when local hero Gabriel Bortoleto hit the barriers heavily twice in his Sauber at the Senna Esses on the final lap, losing both front and rear wings. He was unhurt. "It was tough," said Norris. “So it is more rewarding to win like this, especially with Kimi there not making my life easy. I had to push and it was a bit sketchy and a struggle at the end on the soft tyres. We have some homework to do before qualifying.” Antonelli said: "It was a fun race in very trick conditions and we tried to keep the pressure on Lando, but just came up short." After heavy rain earlier, the race began in drying air with temperatures of 23 (air) and 26 (track) and a keen gusty wind, causing a mixture of soft and medium tyres to be selected in the treacherous conditions. Norris made a clean start but then Piastri, running third, took the kerb at turn three and went spinning off at the Curva do Sol, his trajectory taking Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine's Franco Colapinto with him as they followed his line five laps later. A safety car was deployed immediately, quickly followed by a red flag on lap eight. ‘Put that behind me’ Hulkenberg succeeded in guiding his damaged car back to the pits for repairs – a new front and rear wing - and was permitted to rejoin the fray once the barriers were repaired. Norris, again, advanced with aplomb. For Piastri, whose early-season consistency has crumbled in recent weeks, it was another session to forget. "I am trying to put that behind me," he said. "Let's see what sort of weather we are going to have this afternoon – and of course there are a lot more points tomorrow. "I will try to do a better job in qualifying and get a better starting sport for the race." Few names have dominated the sport of Formula 1 in the last twenty years as much as Christian Horner. Red Bull Racing's team principal is also typically the one smiling from behind his shades, giving an interview, or commemorating yet another victory. But behind the friendly face stands one of the greatest powerbrokers in contemporary motorsport — a man who turned an energy drink company into the toughest outfit on the grid. This is the story of Christian Horner: the strategist, the empire-builder, and the man just sacked by Red Bull as team principal.&nbsp;On July 9, 2025, Christian Horner was sacked as Red Bull Team Principal after spending 20 years in the role. “Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today (Wednesday 9 July 2025) and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing,” said a Red Bull spokesperson. “Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO Corporate Projects and Investments thanked Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years.”

<h2>The youngest boss in the paddock</h2>In 2005, when Red Bull entered Formula 1 by buying the struggling Jaguar team, it turned to a 31-year-old former racer and then-team boss of Formula 3000 outfit Arden International. Christian Horner had never run a Formula 1 team. But Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz saw something others didn’t — a shrewd, ambitious leader who could build something from scratch.&nbsp;Within five years, Red Bull were the world champions. It wasn’t luck. Horner moved quickly to hire the legendary aerodynamics guru Adrian Newey. He cultivated a culture of innovation, agility, and youth — perfectly in sync with Red Bull’s offbeat brand identity. And in 2010, the team won both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships with Sebastian Vettel, repeating the feat for four straight seasons.What started as a marketing experiment had become an F1 dynasty.<h2>Playing the political game</h2>Horner was never just a technical boss. He was a political operator — one of the best in the sport. His role was more than calling strategy on weekends. It was managing media narratives, calming sponsors, clashing with the FIA when needed, and keeping rivals like Mercedes and Ferrari on the back foot.&nbsp;In 2021, this side of Horner was on full display during the epic title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. As tensions flared on and off the track, Horner’s verbal duels with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff often overshadowed the racing. In press conferences, he was sharp and pointed, positioning Red Bull as underdogs even when they were neck-and-neck.&nbsp;Behind the curtain, he was deeply involved in driver decisions — axing Daniil Kvyat mid-season in 2016, giving Verstappen a shot at age 18, and later making tough calls on Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon. Red Bull’s driver program, overseen jointly with Helmut Marko, was ruthless — and Horner embraced it.<h3>The Verstappen era and peak power</h3>Max Verstappen became the centerpiece of Horner’s second Red Bull chapter. After a quiet lull during the hybrid engine era (2014–2020), Red Bull returned to dominance with Verstappen in 2021 and especially from 2022 onwards, winning races almost at will.&nbsp;Horner, now in his late 40s, was no longer the young upstart. He was the longest-serving team principal in the paddock and arguably the most powerful. After the death of Mateschitz in 2022, insiders reported that Horner’s influence within the Red Bull corporation itself had grown. He now had sway not just over Red Bull Racing, but also its sister team (previously AlphaTauri, now RB), and even the direction of Red Bull Powertrains.&nbsp;Some whispers suggested internal tension — with advisor Helmut Marko and even with Verstappen’s camp. But Horner held on, firmly in control. Until everything changed in early 2024.<h3>The scandal that shook Red Bull</h3>In early 2024, reports surfaced that Christian Horner was under investigation following accusations of inappropriate behavior by a female employee at Red Bull Racing. While the company initially backed Horner — clearing him of any wrongdoing after an internal probe — the allegations quickly spiraled into a full-blown public scandal.&nbsp;Leaked messages and WhatsApp exchanges made their way into the media, raising serious questions about Red Bull's internal culture and the integrity of the investigation. Vogue published a detailed expose examining the gendered dynamics of power inside Formula 1, using Horner’s case as a key example.&nbsp;Despite Horner's repeated denials and a brief period of business-as-usual, pressure mounted — not just from the public and press, but reportedly from within Red Bull’s own shareholder base. The BBC reported on the growing internal rift, suggesting that Red Bull’s Thai stakeholders were at odds with the European leadership on Horner’s future.<h3>A legacy, complicated</h3>Christian Horner’s legacy is now deeply complex. On one hand, he built Red Bull into one of the most dominant teams in F1 history — a blend of performance, personality, and politics that redefined what a modern team principal could be. On the other, his downfall has exposed the fragile underpinnings of power, accountability, and image in one of the world’s most high-octane sports.&nbsp;What remains is a team in transition — and a sport still learning how to reckon with its powerful figures when the visor is lifted.

Formula 1: Red Bull sack Team Principal and CEO Christian Horner

Formula 1: Lando Norris leads McLaren 1-2 in Austrian GP practice

Lando Norris bounced back from his Canadian catastrophe to top the times ahead of team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri as McLaren reeled off a commanding 1-2 in second practice on Friday at the Austrian Grand Prix. Norris, who sat out the first session at the Red Bull Ring, clocked a best lap in one minute and 4.580 seconds to beat Piastri by 0.157 seconds with four-time champion Max Verstappen third fastest for Red Bull, adrift by 0.318 seconds. George Russell secured Mercedes' first win of the season in the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday as McLaren's championship-chasing drivers crashed in the final laps of an intriguing and hectic race. The 27-year-old Briton beat close rival and four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull by 0.228 seconds under the safety car to claim his fourth career victory with his teenage Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli finishing third. The 18-year-old Italian rookie became the third-youngest podium finisher in Formula One history, showing composure in resisting late intense late pressure from championship leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren, who survived a collision with team-mate Lando Norris, on his way to fourth. That ensured he extended his lead in the drivers' standings to 22 points ahead of Norris who crashed into him on lap 67 of the 70-lap race, breaking his front wing as he attempted to pass on the straight. "Yep, I'm sorry," said Norris of his crash with Piastri. "It's all my bad, all my fault. Unlucky, sorry. Stupid from me." Charles Leclerc finished fifth ahead of Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. Esteban Ocon finished ninth for Haas, marking their 200th race with a solid points finish, ahead of Carlos Sainz for Williams. Russell was delighted to deliver his team's first win since the Las Vegas Grand Prix last year. "It's amazing to be back on the top step. The last time was Vegas and last year here felt like it was a victory lost. But today we obviously got the victory thanks to that incredible pole lap and I am so happy to see Kimi on the podium as well." Verstappen was quick to congratulate both Mercedes drivers. "It was quite a good race although we were struggling on the tyres in the first two stints. We had an aggressive strategy and we managed to hang in there. And this was the maximum possible for us today." Antonelli was greeted enthusiastically by the big crowd at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with his name chanted as he took his podium place. "It was so stressful," he said. "But I am super happy! I had a good start, managed to jump to P3, and just stayed up there in the front. I am so happy to bring this podium home." Antonelli overtakes Piastri at start The top six were all on mediums when the lights went out, Russell reacting quickest to pull clear while Antonelli passed Piastri for third. Verstappen clung on to Russell's early pace, staying within a second of him throughout the opening five laps, and three clear of Antonelli, as he tried to put him under pressure, but by lap seven the Mercedes was 1.5 seconds clear. By lap 10, it was two seconds as the Dutchman eased to save his tyres before pitting early on lap 13, for hards. This promoted Antonelli to P2 behind Russell with Piastri third ahead of Hamilton, Norris and Alonso. Verstappen rejoined ninth as Russell reacted and pitted, returning in seventh on hards before Antonelli pitted from the lead on lap 15 leaving Piastri leading Norris in a McLaren 1-2. Piastri pitted on lap 17 for hards, gifting Norris the lead after starting seventh on hards. After a bright start, Hamilton pitted on lap 16 and came out trapped 10th in traffic, with reported damage to his car, that delayed his pursuit before Russell, on lap 26, swept past Leclerc for second. Two laps later, Leclerc pitted for more hards followed by Norris, who took mediums. "I don't understand this choice," complained Leclerc, knowing it meant he had to pit again. All this restored Russell and Verstappen to lead again ahead of Antonelli and Piastri with Norris charging in fifth, ahead of the two Ferraris. Verstappen was early to pit again, on lap 37, but with a fast out-lap passed Antonelli, as Mercedes responded in vain to the Red Bull under-cut and began the second stops. Only five seconds separated the top four as they began a furious final 10-lap dash to the flag that resulted in the McLarens battling wheel-to-wheel for fourth place near the end when Norris hit the rear of his team-mate's car and crashed out of the race. Oscar Piastri drove with exemplary calm and control in a torrid race on Sunday to beat rival and team-mate Lando Norris as McLaren claimed their first Spanish Grand Prix victory since 2005 with a resounding 1-2 triumph. The 24-year-old Australian came home 2.4 seconds clear of Norris for his fifth win this year to extend his lead over his teammate in the drivers’ championship to 10 points with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finishing third after a dramatic finale. Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull went for a three-stop strategy that resulted in him losing third place in the final laps before being handed a 10-second penalty for crashing into Mercedes’ George Russell who finished fourth. Nico Hulkenberg, who started 15th on the grid, was a surprise fifth for Sauber ahead of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, Racing Bulls’ rookie Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly of Alpine. Two-time champion and local hero Fernando Alonso finished ninth for Aston Martin with Verstappen classified 10th. "It’s toasty out there," was Piastri’s description of the pre-race heat with temperatures of 32 degress celcius (air) and 51 degrees (track) ensuring high levels of tyre degradation and ice vests for the drivers. Piastri rejected the soubriquet 'Ice Boy' on Saturday but made a super-cool start to pull clear as Verstappen attacked and passed Norris for second out of Turn One as both Ferraris passed Russell to take fourth and fifth ahead of the two Mercedes. Verstappen error Everyone started on soft tyres, other than Tsunoda, from the pit-lane, who was 19th in the absence of Lance Stroll, who was unable to drive his Aston Martin due to hand and wrist pain. Norris finally passed Verstappen on lap 13 on entry to Turn One and began his pursuit of Piastri, as the expected stops began early with the Dutchman, taking more softs – leaving two McLarens leading two Ferraris. Norris and Piastri pitted in sequence for mediums on laps 22 and 23, gifting Verstappen the lead thanks to his early stop. He led until lap 30, when he stopped again for mediums, and rejoined fourth just ahead of Hamilton. Restored as leader, Piastri led Norris by 5.6sec at half-distance with Leclerc, who had saved two sets of new mediums for the race, third until the rapid Verstappen swept by at Turn One and began pursuit. The second round of stops began on lap 41 with Leclerc who rejoined sixth on his shiny new rubber followed by Russell, to softs, and Hamilton again, on lap 47 for a slow 4.2 seconds that saw him rejoin seventh. Verstappen pitted on lap 49, for more softs, to chase Norris, who had also taken softs, for the final 15-lap sprint to the flag, and Piastri, who had followed him in. The top three were separated by barely four seconds as they tangled with traffic amid a flurry of blue flags. With 10 to go, on lap 56, Antonelli speared off with an engine failure to trigger a Safety Car that enabled Verstappen to stop for new hards, his only option, while the McLarens and Leclerc took used softs. Verstappen made an error on lap 60, sliding as he exited the final corner allowing Leclerc to pass before a clash with Russell saw him take the escape road. Red Bull told Verstappen to give position back to Russell but the Dutchman collided with him again to incur his penalty before Piastri cruised clear to take his seventh career victory ahead of Norris. Organisers have said that this time their goal is to strike a balance between luxury and inclusivity, creating an experience that appeals to all types of Formula 1 fans. As the 2025 Miami Grand Prix draws near, visitors can look forward to a mix of gourmet indulgence and down-to-earth local flavours, making the culinary scene as exciting as the race itself.

F1, Japanese Grand Prix: When and where to watch Formula One race live on smart TV, mobile app and match details in India, UK, USA

In a major development ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, multiple reports suggest that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/red-bull">Red Bull</a> Racing has decided to replace Liam Lawson with Yuki Tsunoda. The decision comes after Lawson's challenging start to the 2025 Formula 1 season.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and French broadcaster Canal+, the 24-year-old Tsunoda will be promoted from Red Bull's sister team RB to partner reigning world champion <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/max-verstappen">Max Verstappen</a> at Suzuka from April 4-6. Red Bull has not yet issued an official statement on the matter. However, sources say that they will be making an official announcement soon.

New Zealander Lawson, 23, was brought in from RB during the winter to replace <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/sergio-perez">Sergio Perez</a>. However, his struggles in the opening rounds have put his seat in jeopardy. Lawson has been eliminated in the first stage of all three qualifying sessions and has yet to score a point this season. Meanwhile, his teammate Verstappen is currently second in the title race with 36 points, trailing McLaren&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/lando-norris">Lando Norris</a> by eight points.
<h2>Lawson struggles, Yuki flourishes</h2>
Tsunoda has showcased promising form in the early races of the season. He secured a 12th-place finish in Australia and was on course for a points finish in Shanghai before a flawed two-stop pit strategy by RB cost him the opportunity. Since making his Formula 1 debut with AlphaTauri in 2021, Tsunoda has established himself as a consistent and aggressive racer. He is also the first Japanese driver to compete in F1 since Kamui Kobayashi in 2014.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner&rsquo;s recent comments further fueled speculation about the change. Speaking after the Chinese Grand Prix, Horner admitted that Lawson has had a 'tough couple of races' and that the team would 'have a good look at it'. In contrast, he had more encouraging words for Tsunoda, praising him as an experienced driver who is 'doing a great job'.
With the Japanese Grand Prix fast approaching, all eyes are now on Red Bull for an official announcement.

Lando Norris enters the 2025 Formula 1 season as the favourite, but history&mdash;and fierce competition&mdash;stand in his way. His friend-turned-rival <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/max-verstappen">Max Verstappen</a> is chasing a fifth consecutive title, a feat achieved only by legendary Michael Schumacher. Like Schumacher, Verstappen is a relentless competitor, unafraid to push boundaries&mdash;a trait Norris has learned the hard way.
Adding to the challenge, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/lewis-hamilton">Lewis Hamilton</a> embarks on a new chapter with Ferrari, aiming for a record-breaking eighth championship. The Italian team, hungry for its first drivers' title since 2007, is determined to make Hamilton's arrival a historic one.
<h2>Norris under pressure as favourite</h2>
McLaren&rsquo;s strong finish in 2024 established Norris as a top contender, but the field is tighter than ever. Preseason testing suggests McLaren remains competitive, but threats loom from multiple directions. Verstappen is still a force to be reckoned with, Hamilton is rejuvenated at Ferrari, and Norris' own teammate, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/oscar-piastri">Oscar Piastri</a>, is eager to make his mark. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/charles-leclerc" rel="dofollow">Charles Leclerc </a>(Ferrari) and George Russell (Mercedes) add further unpredictability to a season that could be the closest in years.
Despite the weight of expectations, Norris insists he thrives under pressure. "I know coming into this season that for a lot of people I'm the favourite," he said. "I've always done much better under pressure. I'm able to think and to focus much more."
<h2>Verstappen: The man to beat</h2>
Ever since his dramatic 2021 title win over Hamilton, Verstappen has dominated the sport. Some questioned whether his motivation would wane, but his performance in 2024, where he frequently pushed Norris to the limit and beyond, proved otherwise.
"My motivation is there because last year was not straightforward," Verstappen said. "We had good wins, but not as many as we would have liked. But we still won the championship."
Despite internal tensions at Red Bull, Verstappen remains settled and confident, calling the team his "second family" as he enters his 11th F1 season.
<h2>Hamilton&rsquo;s Ferrari gamble</h2>
For Hamilton, 2025 is about legacy. A title would make him the undisputed greatest champion in F1 history with eight championships. His switch to Ferrari has electrified fans, some of whom even cut down a tree to get a glimpse of him testing the new SF-25.
"I know what a winning team looks and feels like," Hamilton said. "The passion here is like nothing you've ever seen. They have everything they need to win a championship&mdash;it's just about putting the pieces together."
<h2>Wild cards</h2>
Mercedes, after struggling with car issues, showed strong late-season form in 2024, with Russell securing key victories. He&rsquo;s joined by 18-year-old rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, mentored by Hamilton. Meanwhile, teams like Aston Martin may shift focus early to their 2026 development, given the upcoming regulation changes.
<h2>FIA vs Drivers</h2>
Beyond the racing, tensions are brewing between drivers and the sport&rsquo;s governing body, the FIA. President Mohammed Ben Sulayem&rsquo;s crackdown on driver swearing has introduced hefty fines (starting at &euro;40,000) and potential suspensions for repeat offenders. Drivers have also raised concerns about transparency regarding fine money, recent FIA staff changes, and Ben Sulayem&rsquo;s own behaviour. Expect fireworks both on and off the track.
<h2>The showdown</h2>
With multiple title contenders, inter-team battles, and off-track controversies, the 2025 F1 season promises to be one of the most unpredictable in years. Can Norris finally take the crown, or will Verstappen and Hamilton rewrite the record books once again?

Three decades after Formula One engines last roared on African tarmac, South Africa is mounting a bid to organise a new Grand Prix and bring the world championship back to the continent.<o:p></o:p>
Competition to host the high-octane spectacle is between two tracks: a street circuit in Cape Town and the less picturesque but historic Kyalami race track outside of Johannesburg.<o:p></o:p>

A committee set up by sports minister Gayton McKenzie will choose the winning bid in the third quarter of the year, committee member Mlimandlela Ndamase told AFP.<o:p></o:p>
McKenzie is confident about South Africa's chances.<o:p></o:p>
"The Grand Prix is definitely coming in 2027, no doubt about that," he said early February.&nbsp; "Whether it is Cape Town or Joburg, we do not care as long as the Grand Prix is coming to South Africa."<o:p></o:p>
The challenging Kyalami circuit -- which zigzags about 30 kilometres (20 miles) outside Johannesburg and where the track is painted with a huge, colourful South African flag -- once hosted nail-biting races and legendary drivers. <o:p></o:p>But the last grand prix on African soil was held in 1993, the year before South Africa's first democratic elections that ended apartheid. It was won by Alain Prost in a Williams.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Post-apartheid return?<o:p></o:p></h2>
South Africa's bid to host F1 can count on the support of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has long advocated for an African Grand Prix.<o:p></o:p>
"We can't be adding races in other locations and continuing to ignore Africa," Hamilton said last August.<o:p></o:p>
Under the leadership of US conglomerate Liberty Media, which bought the Formula One Group in 2017, the sport wants to "go to every continent", said expert Samuel Tickell, of the University of Munster in Germany.<o:p></o:p>
Returning to South Africa would be "something very important for Formula 1, which has not raced there since the end of the apartheid era," he told AFP.<o:p></o:p>
The sport had lived some "historic moments" in the country, Tickell said, including a threatened strike led by Niki Lauda in 1982 against a racing "super-licence" restricting drivers' contractual freedom.<o:p></o:p>
South Africa also boasts the continent's only world champion, Ferrari's Jody Scheckter in 1979.<o:p></o:p>
Creating a race on the continent would not require excluding other venues as the F1 calendar is always expanding. The upcoming season counts seven more Grand Prix than in 2009, for example.<o:p></o:p>
Sky-high organisational costs and hosting fees would not be an obstacle either, said Simon Chadwick, professor of sport and geopolitical economics at Skema Business School in Paris.<o:p></o:p>
"Even if races are not commercially viable, to some of the countries and their backers, that won't matter because it's a strategic payoff," he said.<o:p></o:p>
China, for instance, has "long been building sports infrastructure for African countries in return for access to their natural resources," he said.<o:p></o:p>
Johannesburg's Kyalami race track is certified as Grade 2, just a level below that needed for a F1 race and it will require some work to host an event.<o:p></o:p>
<h3>Rwanda 'pole position'<o:p></o:p></h3>
An alternative circuit vying to hold the prestigious race would snake through the streets of Cape Town, recently ranked "best city in the world" by Time Out magazine.<o:p></o:p>
Winding its way around the stadium built for the 2010 men's football World Cup in the shadow of the emblematic Lion's Head mountain overlooking the ocean, the route has already hosted a Formula E race in 2023.<o:p></o:p>
A F1 street circuit in the city would "outclass Monaco," said Cape Town Grand Prix CEO Igshaan Amlay. <o:p></o:p>
Yet the real battle may be less between the two rival cities than against Rwanda, whose President Paul Kagame was at the Singapore Grand Prix in September to meet the sport's governing body the FIA and F1 owners Liberty Media, Chadwick said.<o:p></o:p>
The central African country already sponsors Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain football giants and is a partner of the NBA.<o:p></o:p>
"Rwanda is in pole position," Chadwick said.<o:p></o:p>
Morocco has also long had ambitions of hosting a F1 race.<o:p></o:p>
Still, nothing prevents two GPs being held on the continent, with the South African sports minister asking: "Why is it that when it comes to Africa, we are treated like we can only get one?"<o:p></o:p>
Rwanda's F1 bid could though be hampered by its involvement in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Already calls are mounting to withdraw the cycling Road World Championships, planned in Kigali in September.

Still, nothing prevents two GPs being held on the continent, with the South African sports minister asking: "Why is it that when it comes to Africa, we are treated like we can only get one?" Rwanda's F1 bid could though be hampered by its involvement in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Already calls are mounting to withdraw the cycling Road World Championships, planned in Kigali in September. Formula One drivers face the possibility of fines or points deductions after the FIA introduced new guidelines to punish swearing or other sporting violations.&nbsp;
An initial tightening of the rules in 2024 was criticised by a number of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/formula-1">F1</a> drivers, notably four-time world champion <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/max-verstappen">Max Verstappen</a>, but the FIA, the sport's governing body, has decided to go further.&nbsp;
In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the FIA defined misconduct as "the general use of language (written or verbal), gesture and/or sign that is offensive, insulting, coarse, rude or abusive and might reasonably be expected or be perceived to be coarse or rude or to cause offence, humiliation or to be inappropriate".&nbsp;

It also included "assaulting (elbowing, kicking, punching, hitting, etc.)", and "incitement to do any of the above".
A scale of sanctions has been revealed with fines ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 euros for a first offence, from 20,000 to 30,000 euros for a repeat offence and 30,000 to 45,000 euros for a further offence.&nbsp;
But these amounts will be multiplied by four for Formula One drivers, by three for those competing in rally (WRC) or endurance (WEC) and by two for participants in regional championships.
Last season, Verstappen was ordered to do some community service for swearing in a press conference while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was fined 10,000 euros for a similar offence.
Neither sanction was well received by the drivers who also criticised certain statements by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.&nbsp;
"When it comes to swearing, there is a difference between a swear word intended to insult others and more casual swear words, such as those one might use when talking about bad weather, an inanimate object such as a Formula 1 car, or a driving situation", the drivers wrote in an open letter at the beginning of November.
"We urge the FIA president to also consider his own tone and language when talking to our member drivers, or indeed about them, whether in a public forum or otherwise."
"Furthermore, our members are adults. They do not need to be given instructions via the media, about matters as trivial as the wearing of jewellery or underpants," they added.
The Formula One season kicks off with the Australian Grand Prix on March 16 while the WRC gets underway later on Thursday with the Monte Carlo Rally.

Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton begins 'a new chapter' with Ferrari

Formula 1 teams are integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations. They are trying to leverage the new technology to boost car performance, optimise strategies, and streamline business processes.
At the forefront of this transformation is the McLaren Formula 1 Team, which recently revealed its AI initiatives at the McLaren Technology Center (MTC) in Woking, England.
Dan Keyworth, McLaren&rsquo;s Director of Business Technology highlighted the team&rsquo;s longstanding use of machine learning. During a press conference at the MTC, he said that generative AI tools have enabled McLaren to conduct in-depth simulations of race scenarios, such as identifying the optimal timing for pit stops or determining the best tyre selections during critical moments.&nbsp;
Keyworth added that these AI-driven predictions are yielding precise results. This in return, is helping the team&rsquo;s on-track performance.
<h2>McLaren's championship triumph&nbsp;</h2>
The enhanced performance of McLaren's car after the integration of AI was visible in the 2024 Formula 1 season. McLaren secured the F1's World Constructors' Championship, while its drivers claimed second and third place in the Drivers' Championship, finishing behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

<h2>Digital Twins</h2>
One of McLaren&rsquo;s standout technological advancements is the use of &ldquo;digital twins&rdquo;&mdash;virtual 3D replicas of physical cars. These digital models allow the team to simulate and analyse conditions cars may face on the track. This capability, coupled with real-time data monitoring from McLaren&rsquo;s mission control room, supports strategy adjustments during races.
Connectivity is crucial to these efforts, with mobile data centres acting as the backbone of McLaren&rsquo;s operations. These compact server units are transported to race locations worldwide, ensuring seamless real-time data processing and communication between the track and the MTC.
<h2>Other teams with AI support</h2>
McLaren isn&rsquo;t alone in its embrace of AI. Aston Martin Aramco uses machine learning algorithms and &ldquo;data lakes&rdquo; to analyse vast volumes of data, such as tyre performance, weather, and track conditions, enabling predictive analytics to inform race strategies. Red Bull-owned Visa Cash App RB has also adopted AI to streamline simulations, reducing the need for extensive manual modelling and allowing engineers to focus on precision adjustments measured in milliseconds.

<h2>Business operations</h2>
AI is also improving business operations within Formula 1 teams. Keyworth noted that AI tools are being used to automate repetitive tasks. This enables employees to focus on higher-value work. He described this approach as replacing &ldquo;laborious&rdquo; tasks rather than replacing human labour, ultimately improving efficiency across the organisation.
