Cadillac F1 team gears up for 2026 debut after FIA approval

Three decades after Formula One engines last roared on African tarmac, South Africa is mounting a bid to organise a new Grand Prix and bring the world championship back to the continent.<o:p></o:p>
Competition to host the high-octane spectacle is between two tracks: a street circuit in Cape Town and the less picturesque but historic Kyalami race track outside of Johannesburg.<o:p></o:p>

A committee set up by sports minister Gayton McKenzie will choose the winning bid in the third quarter of the year, committee member Mlimandlela Ndamase told AFP.<o:p></o:p>
McKenzie is confident about South Africa's chances.<o:p></o:p>
"The Grand Prix is definitely coming in 2027, no doubt about that," he said early February.&nbsp; "Whether it is Cape Town or Joburg, we do not care as long as the Grand Prix is coming to South Africa."<o:p></o:p>

<h2>Post-apartheid return?<o:p></o:p></h2>
South Africa's bid to host F1 can count on the support of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has long advocated for an African Grand Prix.<o:p></o:p>
"We can't be adding races in other locations and continuing to ignore Africa," Hamilton said last August.<o:p></o:p>
Under the leadership of US conglomerate Liberty Media, which bought the Formula One Group in 2017, the sport wants to "go to every continent", said expert Samuel Tickell, of the University of Munster in Germany.<o:p></o:p>
Returning to South Africa would be "something very important for Formula 1, which has not raced there since the end of the apartheid era," he told AFP.<o:p></o:p>
The sport had lived some "historic moments" in the country, Tickell said, including a threatened strike led by Niki Lauda in 1982 against a racing "super-licence" restricting drivers' contractual freedom.<o:p></o:p>

Sky-high organisational costs and hosting fees would not be an obstacle either, said Simon Chadwick, professor of sport and geopolitical economics at Skema Business School in Paris.<o:p></o:p>
"Even if races are not commercially viable, to some of the countries and their backers, that won't matter because it's a strategic payoff," he said.<o:p></o:p>
China, for instance, has "long been building sports infrastructure for African countries in return for access to their natural resources," he said.<o:p></o:p>
Johannesburg's Kyalami race track is certified as Grade 2, just a level below that needed for a F1 race and it will require some work to host an event.<o:p></o:p>
<h3>Rwanda 'pole position'<o:p></o:p></h3>
An alternative circuit vying to hold the prestigious race would snake through the streets of Cape Town, recently ranked "best city in the world" by Time Out magazine.<o:p></o:p>

"When it comes to swearing, there is a difference between a swear word intended to insult others and more casual swear words, such as those one might use when talking about bad weather, an inanimate object such as a Formula 1 car, or a driving situation", the drivers wrote in an open letter at the beginning of November.
"We urge the FIA president to also consider his own tone and language when talking to our member drivers, or indeed about them, whether in a public forum or otherwise."

Verstappen accelerated as racing resumed on lap six with Sainz soon showing Ferrari’s potential and then sweeping inside him to lead on lap nine at Turn One.&nbsp;

The Dutchman fought but Sainz hung on and next time round on lap 10 Norris made a move at Turn Eight where Verstappen responded by forcing him wide and off-track.&nbsp;

Norris handed the place back.

"I was ahead the whole way through the corner," said the Briton. "This guy is dangerous. I have to avoid a crash. I’ll end up in the wall."&nbsp;

As they squabbled, Leclerc moved up to second while Norris tried again at Turn Four on the next lap only to be pushed off again.

"He overtook me off-track and pushed me off," said Norris.

The stewards noted both incidents and then issued Verstappen with a 10-second penalty for fouling Norris. "That’s quite impressive," said a sarcastic Verstappen.&nbsp;

Andrea Kimi Antonelli will be thrown in at the deep end next year after Mercedes announced on Saturday that the Italian teenager&nbsp;will replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes once the seven-time world champion jumps ship for Ferrari.

"He's also the one that has beaten all the records and when Lewis decided to go for another challenge, no one can replace him in all of his, let's say, stature.&nbsp;

"But that doesn't mean that the team is not going to prosper with two drivers that represent the future."

However, neither Wolff nor the team statement revealed for how long Antonelli's contract would run and the Austrian didn't close the door on snatching Max Verstappen from Red Bull for 2026 when asked if he discarded the idea.

"There's no discussion, there's no second thoughts about what we're doing in 2026, because now it's about 2024 and 2025," said Wolff.

"And if flirting outside happens, then they will know it before me. These guys will know it at the same time."

Antonelli was picked by Mercedes even though his first-ever F1 drive ended quickly and in spectacular fashion at Friday's first practice session for the Italian Grand Prix, smashing Russell's car into the trackside barriers at Monza with just four completed laps under his belt.

Given a chance by Mercedes to drive an F1 car, he lost control at the Parabolica turn 10 minutes into the session and seriously damaged the front end after ploughing through the gravel.

The Q1 session was red-flagged for nine minutes before the action resumed with Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas going top by five seconds before others on slicks clocked improved ‘slick’ times as rain approached.&nbsp;

In the midst of this, Verstappen went off at Copse, but recovered, falling to an endangered 15th&nbsp;before responding in a frantic finale which saw Bottas, Kevin Magnussen of Haas, Alpine's Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly eliminated along with Perez.

The Williams cars led the way into Q2, Logan Sargeant under pressure to keep his seat, with all on slicks. On his first run, Verstappen, carrying damage, was only seventh as Norris and then Alonso set the pace ahead of Sainz and Hamilton.
