England on Sunday started their Euro 2020 campaign with a 1-0 win over Croatia with Raheem Sterling scoring the winner for the Gareth Southgate-managed side.

Southgate sprung a few surprises in his line-up as he named Kieron Tripper as the left-back while starting with the front three of Sterling, Harry Kane and Phil Foden. Mason Mount, Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips made up the midfield three whereas John Stones, Tyrone Mings and Kyle Walker completed the defense.

England started the match by dominating possession as the English players passed the ball around. With Kane heavily marked, Foden and Sterling started to run behind Croatia’s defense. However, the break came after Phillips found Sterling sprinting into the box diagonally. The Manchester City winger slotted the ball home to give England their first goal of Euro 2020.

"It feels good. I've always said, if I played at Wembley at a major tournament, I'm scoring... Croatia started to attack the ball a bit more after trailing in the match but the lack of quality going forward haunted him throughout the course of the match.

Harry Kane and John Stones were taken off in the second half. While Kane was taken off as a precautionary measure after he collided with the goal-post, Stones suffered tight leg muscle.

Italy kicked off the European Championship in emphatic style on Friday as they delivered a commanding performance to sweep past toothless Turkey 3-0 in the Stadio Olimpico and stamp their early authority on Group A.

After a goalless first half, an own goal and strikes by Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne were just a reward for the home side, who played with relentless positivity from the start.

Their dispiriting failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup looked a distant memory as they stretched their unbeaten run to 28 matches in a buoyant atmosphere.

They were helped by a flat display from Turkey, who lost their fifth consecutive opening match of a European Championship finals and barely mustered a worthwhile attack all night.

"It was important to start well here in Rome and it is a joy for us and for all the Italians," said coach Roberto Mancini.

"We produced a good performance and I think we satisfied everyone, for the fans and all the Italians watching. But there are six games to go and there are a lot of good teams."

Switzerland and Wales, who meet in the group's second game in Baku on Saturday, always knew Italy was the group favorites but the size of their task has suddenly looked somewhat bigger.

STRONG START

After a build-up featuring a spine-tingling rendition of Nessun Dorma by opera singer Andrea Bocelli - channeling thoughts of Italia '90 - a spectacular fireworks display and a typically raucous rendition of Italy's national anthem, the 16,000-strong crowd was in fine voice by kick-off.

They were given plenty to cheer too as Italy made all the early running against a Turkish team happy to sit deep and invite pressure.

However, Mancini’s side was left frustrated in their efforts to break through the wall of red shirts.

Giorgio Chiellini had a header tipped over with a spectacular one-handed save by Ugurcan Cakir and Immobile nodded across wide as Italy went in at the break with 14 attempts to none from Turkey - but without a goal.

They kept probing and their patience was rewarded when Berardi fired a cross into the six-yard box where Demiral chested the ball into the net - the first time in a European Championship that the tournament’s opening goal was an own goal.

The ever-dangerous Leonardo Spinazzola had a shot beaten away and Manuel Locatelli’s low effort was palmed wide before Immobile doubled Italy's lead by pouncing on Cakir’s parry from another Spinazzola effort to neatly knock in the rebound.

The Azzurri’s dominance was rewarded again when Immobile threaded a pass to Insigne, who placed a precise finish into the bottom corner with 11 minutes remaining.

It marked the first time Italy had scored three goals in a match at the Euros at their 39th attempt and capped a perfect start.

Mancini had told his players they should enjoy themselves and seek to entertain and that was exactly what they did for a jubilant home crowd.

There was only gloom in the visiting camp as veteran coach Senol Gunes, who led Turkey to third place at the 2002 World Cup, apologized for the performance.

"I was expecting a better game, and I am disappointed and we are sorry," he said. "Italy totally controlled the game."

England's performance at the European Championship can help in uniting the country, manager Gareth Southgate said ahead of Sunday's opening game against Croatia.

England, semi-finalists at the 2018 World Cup, are deemed one of the favourites to win the European showpiece but their build-up to the tournament has been marred by some fans booing players for the anti-racism gesture of "taking the knee".

There were jeers from a small section of spectators at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough when players took the knee before England's friendly wins over Austria and Romania last week.

"I think it's time for the country to unite, full stop," Southgate told the BBC on Friday. "If the team can be a catalyst for that then that's brilliant.

"I think the England team is often a catalyst for bringing people together ... so of course in the process of doing that we want to play well, we want to win, we want to excite people, but not all of that falls upon us."

The Three Lions revived the country's love affair with football when they reached the semi-finals of Euro 1996, which was held on home soil.

Southgate, who was part of coach Terry Venables' team which lost to Germany in the last-four that year, said it was time for England to "remember what a strong nation we are".

"We've had lots of division and sometimes we need to remember what a strong island we are, what a strong nation we are, the great qualities that we have," he said.

"There were moments at the beginning of the pandemic that were so powerful where people did pull together, I think we should always be striving towards that."

The Netherlands will be looking to make up for the lost time when they begin their European Championship campaign at home against Ukraine in Amsterdam on Sunday, hoping a sea of orange will spur them on to the perfect start.

It is a return to a major tournament for the first time since the Dutch finished third at the 2014 World Cup.

Missing out on the last Euros in France and then the 2018 World Cup in Russia were a major setback and re-establishing their reputation as a footballing force is top priority for coach Frank de Boer and his team.

The Netherlands will need a positive start after their build-up was marred by media disapproval of the more defensive tactics employed in warm-ups against Scotland and Georgia.

There are also few more critical fans than the Dutch, who demand not only success but also swagger from their team and are quick to voice their displeasure when this is not the case.

There will be 16,000 on hand at the Johan Cruyff Arena, sure to be clad in the team's distinctive colors, providing a lift for the home side and an intimidating presence for the visitors.

"The European Championship at home without fans is no championship. I'm looking forward to it enormously," said captain Georginio Wijnaldum.

"It also feels that we are at the end of a really tiresome period and we are at the beginning of a much brighter, nicer time."

Ukraine, whose pre-tournament preparations have been overshadowed by controversy over their kit, are a side capable of upsetting the odds but lack consistency.

In their three World Cup qualifiers in March, they held world champions France to a 1-1 draw in Paris, only to then drop points at home to the lowly likes of Finland and Kazakhstan.

There has, however, been marked improvement under coach Andriy Shevchenko, appointed after they lost all three group games at Euro 2016 in France.

"Hopefully there will be surprises at the tournament and we will certainly be looking to create them," warned battling midfielder Taras Stepanenko this week.

Football: Back again, Dutch seek to restore past reputation

Antoine Griezmann has piled praises on colleague Lionel Messi in the midst of gossipy tidbits about a fracture between the two whizzes.

Addressing French outlet L'Equipe, he uncovered that he imparts an incredible working relationship with Lionel Messi.

In a conversation, Antoine Griezmann expressed that Lionel Messi has mystical powers and is a simple player to play with. He said:

"Our relationship is good. We get along well. We sometimes write messages to each other, we communicate a lot in training. On the pitch, he's obviously a super-easy player to play with. You send him a melon, he turns it into caviar! We don't have that pressure to miss a pass with him."

There has been a ton of theory encompassing the connection between Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi, particularly after the Frenchman's landing in Barcelona in 2019.

In a similar conversation, Antoine Griezmann uncovered that he was miserable at events when he wasn't considered the best Barcelona player.

The forward said that he didn't feel essential to the crew because of the reality Barcelona previously had any semblance of Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. He clarified:

"At the start of the season too, because I wasn't playing, I didn't feel important. I am used to playing every game, the big matches. I found myself on the bench against Real Madrid (a 3-1 loss in October 2020). It made me mad to see my teammates warming up on the pitch while you're next to it."

Regardless of having a 2020-21 season to neglect, Antoine Griezmann stays positive that Barcelona will have a superior mission once newcomers get comfortable. He said:

"In the game, things get better and better. This year, it was a bit complicated because we had a lot of injuries and we played in a system where everyone was not necessarily in their best position. But we are going to start a new season with recruits, it will go better."

Spain coach Luis Enrique said on Thursday he will wait as long as it takes for Sergio Busquets after his positive COVID-19 test, ruling out replacing the midfielder even though he is due to missing the opening Euro 2020 game with Sweden.

It comes as the Spanish Football Federation confirmed that all squad members would be vaccinated on Friday, "allowing the national team to compete on equal terms with other participating teams that have already been immunized".

Enrique had previously expressed concern about the vaccine's potential side effects that could impact his players ahead of Monday's tournament opener. He will now face an anxious wait to see who else might have to miss out against the Swedes.

Busquets, who became captain after Sergio Ramos failed to make the squad, tested positive on Sunday and was sent home to quarantine in Barcelona while the rest of the squad went into isolation.

Luis Enrique has called up a parallel squad to choose from in case anyone is ruled out but he said Busquets, the only surviving member of Spain's 2010 World Cup winners, was worth waiting for.

"I'm going to wait for him, we're all going to wait for him. He has the advantage that he was the first player to test positive and there's still time. I'm certain he'll remain in the squad," Luis Enrique told a news conference.

"Anyone who has watched football in the last 12 years can see what Busquets can contribute, every time the ball passes through him our play improves, he's one of the leaders of this team."

Busquets was still asymptomatic and able to train at home and stay fit, he added.

LLORENTE TO RETURN

Defender Diego Llorente tested positive on Tuesday and was also sent into quarantine. But the Spain team said he was due to return on Friday after negative results in his last two tests, and serious indications he had returned a false positive.

Luis Enrique admitted the results had disrupted the team's preparations but said the setbacks made them even more determined for the tournament, which they won in 2008 and 2012.

"We complied with all the protocols and we were even stricter than UEFA had suggested, but everything changed after the first positive. Everything went downhill from that day," he said.

"But we have the hope of doing something great. We've always adapted to circumstances outside of football and all I can think is that positive and beautiful things await us."

Spain coach Luis Enrique said on Thursday he will wait as long as it takes for Sergio Busquets after his positive COVID-19 test, ruling out replacing the midfielder even though he is due to missing the opening Euro 2020 game with Sweden.

Euro 2020, Schedule: Full fixtures, date, timings, venue - Everything you need to know

Twenty-five years after England's dramatic Euro 96 campaign revived the nation's love affair with football, Gareth Southgate's side aim to emulate the golden summer when football came home.

England manager Southgate leads his team into their opening match of the European Championship against Croatia at Wembley on Sunday.

It should be a memorable occasion as England play on home turf at a major tournament for the first time since Euro 96.

For Southgate, England's role as one of several hosts of the delayed Euro 2020 offers a chance for redemption after his penalty miss condemned the country to Euro 96 semi-final heartache against Germany.

If England can create the same wave of national enthusiasm that Terry Venables' team surfed 25 years ago, Southgate will have a chance of winning a first major title for the country since the 1966 World Cup.

English football was undergoing a long-awaited rebirth by the time Euro 96 arrived, recovering from a dark period in which its image was badly damaged by hooligan gangs who clashed in decaying stadiums.

The Premier League had been established four years earlier, with Britpop bands Blur and Oasis and even future prime minister Tony Blair jumping on the bandwagon to broaden the game's appeal.

Capturing the optimistic "Cool Britannia" mood, comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner teamed up with The Lightning Seeds to write England's Euro 96 anthem "Three Lions".

With its "Football's Coming Home" chorus, the song became the soundtrack to England's summer.

Yet, while there were unforgettable days ahead, England started Euro 96 in disarray.

Celebrating Paul Gascoigne's birthday during a pre-tournament trip to Hong Kong, England players found themselves on the front pages after a drunken evening at the China Jump bar.

The debauchery peaked in the "dentist's chair" -- a drinking game in which the footballers sat with their mouths open as tequila and vodka were poured in.

Gascoigne and other players were also involved in a heated dispute that led to televisions being damaged on a Cathay Pacific flight back to London.

Rather than read the riot act as tabloid headlines screamed "Disgracefool", Venables fostered a seige mentality among his squad.

- 'We had a lot of fun' -

Venables' ploy nearly backfired when England were held to a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their opening game at Wembley.

But England's tournament turned in the grudge match against Scotland, an opponent who lie in wait for Southgate's men in their Euro 2020 group.

Alan Shearer headed England into the lead and David Seaman saved Gary McAllister's penalty before Gascoigne repaid Venables' faith with a sublime goal that showcased his maverick genius.

Gascoigne celebrated by lying on the ground while Teddy Sheringham squirted a water bottle into his open mouth in a nod to their "dentist's chair" antics.

"Gazza saw the dentist's chair in the middle of this bar. From that moment it turns into chaos," former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp recalled.

"One of the great nights. And Gazza's like 'I'm going to score against Scotland and when I do, I'm going to do the dentist chair'.

"Apart from Bobby Moore lifting the World Cup, that's the best picture I've seen of anyone in an England shirt."

England produced one of their greatest performances to crush the Netherlands 4-1 in their final group game.

But after surviving a tense shootout to beat Spain in the last eight, England's infamous penalty demons resurfaced when they faced Germany in a pulsating semi-final.

Stefan Kuntz cancelled out Shearer's opener and, after Gascoigne was inches away from an extra-time winner, it was Southgate who played the villain with his shoot-out miss.

Southgate wept on Venables' shoulder, while Germany went on to beat the Czech Republic in the final.

Despite the painful denouement, Euro 96 remains an iconic moment in English football, one that Southgate would love to recreate with his team over the next month.

"It was not only that we reached the semi-finals, it was that we had a lot of fun along the way, and I think the whole country did too," Shearer said.

'Football's Coming Home': England aim to emulate spirit of Euro 96

India's Sunil Chhetri said Wednesday comparisons with Lionel Messi are misplaced after overtaking him in number of goals, and added he remains a huge fan of the Argentine star.

Chhetri surpassed Messi's tally of 72 international goals in India's 2-0 win over Bangladesh on Monday to stand behind top-ranked Cristiano Ronaldo (103) among active players.

"The fact is there is no comparison whatsoever (with Messi)," Chhetri, who has scored 74 international goals, said from Doha.

"When anyone sees those (top goal scorer) chart, be happy for five seconds as an Indian and that's about it. Forget about me and Messi because the whole world, including me, is a fan of Messi."

Chhetri, 36, scored all two goals in India's victory in the qualifying match for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

With 73 strikes Ali Mabkhout, of the United Arab Emirates, is also above Messi -- a six-time Ballon d'Or winner widely regarded as the greatest player of the modern era.

India, who are ranked 105th in the FIFA team rankings, are already out of the race to qualify for the World Cup but can make it to the Asian Cup in China.

Spain have set up a "parallel" squad of 17 reserves for Euro 2020 who may have to play if the Covid-19 infections among its players spread, team management said on Wednesday.

In a decision announced just hours after Spain defender Diego Llorente became the second player to test positive for Covid-19, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced in a statement posted on its website that it was setting up a "parallel bubble".

The RFEF said it had called in 11 players to join six backups who were already acting as cover for the coronavirus-hit first-choice squad.

Captain Sergio Busquets tested positive on Sunday, just a week before Spain open their Euro campaign on Monday, playing Sweden in Group E in the southern city of Seville.

Sweden's Euro 2020 squad has also been hit by infections, with two players, star forward Dejan Kulusevski and midfielder Mattias Svanberg, testing positive, its federation said Tuesday.

Since Busquests tested positive, Spain's entire Euro squad has been in isolation.

The 11 newcomers were part of an Under-21 team that thumped Lithuania 4-0 on Tuesday evening in Spain's final warm-up match ahead of the Euro.

"The coaching staff of Spain's national team have decided 11 internationals initially called up for the match against Lithuania will remain part of the senior national team," it said.

"This group of internationals will join their teammates... within a parallel bubble, created in anticipation of the possible consequences that could result from the positives of Sergio Busquets and Diego Llorente."

The players are Alvaro Fernandez, Oscar Mingueza, Marc Cucurella, Bryan Gil, Juan Miranda, Gonzalo Villar, Alejandro Pozo, Brahim Diaz, Martin Zubimendi, Yeremy Pino and Javi Puado.

They join six players already drafted in by coach Luis Enrique as insurance against any more positives among his squad: Rodrigo Moreno, Pablo Fornals, Carlos Soler, Brais Mendez, Raul Albiol and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 17 reserves in their separate bubble will have no contact with the main Euro 2020 squad.

Players on the first-choice squad were all to be vaccinated against Covid-19 later on Wednesday, the Spanish sports ministry said.

Spain are also scheduled to play Poland and Slovakia in Group E, with all their group stage matches at the Cartuja stadium in Seville.

The Premier League on Wednesday agreed to a settlement with the ‘Big Six’ of the English top-flight on their involvement in the controversial European Super League. Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to pay a combined £22million for their involvement in the breakaway league.

Former England international Gary Neville has now branded the settlement between Premier League and the six clubs as an “embarrassment”. Notably, the six Premier League clubs had announced themselves as founding members of the ESL but quickly withdrew amid fan protests and opposition from the Premier League, UEFA, FIFA and British Government.

Neville took to social media platform Twitter to announce his disappointment at the sanctions as he wrote: “An absolute embarrassment!”

The Premier League conducted a probe into the foundation of ESL with its chief executive Richard Masters saying that the investigation would be conducted “efficiently, justly and appropriately”.

The fine paid by the six Premier League clubs will go to the development of children’s football and the grassroots game. Additionally, the clubs had earlier agreed to forego five per cent of any UEFA competition revenue for one season.

However, the nine clubs, who withdrew from ESL, face fines of £87 million each from UEFA in case of any future breakaway attempt.
Meanwhile, three clubs who are still part of ESL are Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, and a disciplinary proceeding have been opened against them by UEFA.

Marcus Rashford said every player in Gareth Southgate's squad has a role to play at the European Championship and that he is more concerned about delivering the title for England than seeing his name in the starting lineup.

The Manchester United forward captained England and scored in last weekend's 1-0 friendly win over Romania but he struggled for fitness and form at the end of last season for United, scoring once in their final 10 games.

The 23-year-old faces tough competition for a place in the starting line-up for Sunday's Group D opener against Croatia, with Southgate, blessed with plenty of attacking options in his 26-man squad.

"We go there as a squad that's trying to win a tournament," Rashford told British media on Monday. "Whether or not you're starting in the first 11, you've still got a massive role to play if we want to win the tournament.

"Don't get me wrong, everybody wants to be in the first 11 but I think from my experience of being in tournaments you need a squad, you have to have players capable of coming on at different moments and giving that extra spark.

"I think in our squad we have that all over the pitch, so to be honest, it (starting against Croatia) is not at the front of my mind."

England, semi-finalists at the 2018 World Cup, face Scotland on June 18 and the Czech Republic four days later after playing Croatia, with all games being held at Wembley.

Jose Mourinho has given his decision on who he thinks ought to be Manchester United's best option goalkeeper going ahead.

Manchester United switched back and forth between David De Gea and Dean Henderson in the 2020-21 season. In any case, Jose Mourinho accepts Manchester United should place their confidence in the Englishman next season.

Addressing The Times, Jose Mourinho stacked applause on Dean Henderson and encouraged Manchester United to allow the 24-year old the beginning compartment once again David De Gea next season. He said in such manner:

"I think they are good goalkeepers. I don’t think they are phenomenal goalkeepers or, in Dean Henderson’s case, not yet phenomenal. When I say not yet, I say he will be. I met him at Manchester United when he was a kid, and I always remember him asking me to go on loan. He was saying when I come back, I will come back to be the No 1. He told me that when he was the fourth choice. He is a kid with incredible self-confidence, and I think he is ready."

Dean Henderson kept ten clean sheets in 24 appearances across all rivalries for Manchester United in the 2020-21 season. His exhibitions procured him a spot in Gareth Southgate's England crew for Euro 2020.

The 24-year is old appears to be prepared to take over as David De Gea's replacement at Manchester United. In any case, it stays not yet clear whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is prepared to pull the trigger and hand Dean Henderson the beginning spot once again the Spaniard.

David De Gea's spell at Manchester United could be reaching a conclusion and Dean Henderson's rise at Manchester United could spell the finish of David De Gea's time at the club. The Spaniard had an unconvincing 2020-21 season and looked unstable between the sticks for Manchester United time and again.

Manchester United could hope to take advantage of De Gea while his stock is still moderately high. The shot-plug has been connected with a move back to his youth club Atletico Madrid this late spring. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be enticed to allow the Spaniard to leave and completely focus on Dean Henderson.

Manchester United is apparently very nearly marking Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton, which could mean De Gea could be on the foundation of uncertain time at the club.

Russian health authorities said Tuesday that coronavirus cases in Saint Petersburg were on the rise with days to go before the city co-hosts the postponed Euro 2020 football championship.

Authorities in Russia's second city have set up additional hospital beds while assuring the spike in cases was due to a "cyclical" phenomenon.

For the past month, the city recorded an average of 700 cases a day, but the number of daily infections has exceeded 800 for the last two weeks, according to a government tally.

"The past week has shown that we recorded an increase in Covid-19 infections," the city's governor Alexander Beglov said in a radio interview on Monday.

"It is connected to the cyclical nature of the activity of the virus," he said, adding that his team was taking "all the necessary measures".

Also on Tuesday, local authorities said that a hospital for veterans with some 876 beds will be converted to a coronavirus ward. It will open its doors to patients by the end of the week.

In late May, another temporary hospital for coronavirus patients was reopened in Saint Petersburg after being shut since February.

The former imperial capital will host seven Euro matches -- including a quarter-final -- in June and July after the tournament was postponed for a year due to the pandemic.

Earlier in June, the city hosted the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, which despite being smaller than in previous years brought together thousands of participants.

By number of virus cases, Saint Petersburg is the second-most affected city in Russia, surpassed only by the capital Moscow.

Russia imposed a strict lockdown when the pandemic first swept across the country last spring, but authorities lifted most virus measures within several months, opting to protect the struggling economy.

They also pinned hopes on Russia's coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik V, which was registered in August.

But while Russia's domestic vaccination campaign started in early December ahead of most countries, the country has struggled to innoculate its citizens.

Gareth Southgate says his England players are "role models" as a row simmered over the team's decision to take the knee at Euro 2020 to highlight the issue of racial injustice.

Southgate's side were booed by a section of the crowd at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium when they made the gesture before friendlies against Austria and Romania last week, though the jeers were drowned out by applause.

Premier League players have been going down on one knee before kick-off since George Floyd, who was black, was killed by a white police officer in the United States last year.

With fans now allowed back in stadiums in England after the easing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions, some politicians have voiced their opposition to the gesture.

The debate over the issue has provided an unwelcome distraction in the build-up to England's opening game against Croatia on June 13.

All three of England's group matches will take place at Wembley in front of crowds of 22,000 as part of a pilot scheme for the return of supporters.

Southgate, who had previously confirmed his side would continue taking the knee at the delayed European Championship, said the team had an important role to play.

"Our players are role models," the England boss wrote in the Players' Tribune. "And, beyond the confines of the pitch, we must recognise the impact they can have on society.

"We must give them the confidence to stand up for their teammates and the things that matter to them as people. I have never believed that we should just stick to football."

He added: "It's their duty to continue to interact with the public on matters such as equality, inclusivity and racial injustice, while using the power of their voices to help put debates on the table, raise awareness and educate."

Southgate tried to heal a potentially divisive rift among England's support and the players.

"There's something I tell our players before every England game, and the reason that I repeat it is because I really believe it with all my heart," he said.

"I tell them that when you go out there, in this shirt, you have the opportunity to produce moments that people will remember forever.

"You are a part of an experience that lasts in the collective consciousness of our country."

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has been added to Spain's training squad as they prepare for any potential fall-out from captain Sergio Busquets's positive COVID-19 test ahead of the European Championship.

After Busquets tested positive, the remaining 23 players went into isolation along with the coaching staff, meaning an Under-21 side led by coach age-group Luis de la Fuente will face Lithuania on Tuesday in what was supposed to be the nation's final warm-up game before the Euros.

On Monday, Spain boss Luis Enrique called up Rodrigo Moreno (Leeds), Carlos Soler (Valencia), Brais Mendez (Celta Vigo), Pablo Fornals (West Ham) and Raul Albiol as potential cover should there be an outbreak.

Arrizabalaga and the five others will train in what Spain are calling a "parallel bubble" away from the main Euros squad with a view to them being added should the need occur.

The Spanish FA also confirmed on Monday that all the players and staff who are currently isolating tested negative, but will continue to train alone ahead of next Monday's Group E opener against Sweden in Seville.

Football: Sunil Chhetri - Captain, leader, legend, and the saviour

Ahead of the start of Euro 2020 on Friday, AFP Sport selects six of the continent's brightest young stars to watch at the month-long tournament:

- Phil Foden -

The player of the tournament when England won the Under-17 World Cup in India in 2017, Foden is now set to be unleashed on a full international competition for the first time at the age of 21. He is coming off a superb season at Manchester City in which he starred in Pep Guardiola's Premier League title-winning side, regularly cutting in from the left flank and contributing 16 goals in all competitions.

Foden, who likes to spend his free time fishing with his father, made his full England debut last September and scored his first goals against Iceland in the Nations League in November.

- Pedri -

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Juan Carlos Valeron, David Silva and Pedro Rodriguez before him, Pedri is the latest star to emerge from the Canary Islands and break into the Spain set-up.

The slight 18-year-old midfielder with the silky touch, who comes from Tenerife, joined Barcelona last year from Las Palmas. Growing up he modelled himself on Andres Iniesta and he wasted little time establishing himself at the Camp Nou, playing in all but one game in La Liga for Barca in the season just finished. He made his Spain debut in a World Cup qualifier against Greece in March.

- Jamal Musiala -

The 18-year-old Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder was born in Stuttgart but could have been lining up for England at the Euro. His father is British-Nigerian and he moved to England with his family aged seven. He has represented both Germany and England at youth level too. "I have a heart for Germany and a heart for England," he told The Athletic earlier this year.

However, he left the Chelsea academy set-up to join Bayern in 2019 and committed his international future to Germany in February, just before signing a new five-year deal at his club. Shortly after that he was given his full Germany debut in a World Cup qualifier against Iceland.

- Matthijs de Ligt -

Centre-back De Ligt is still just 21 but his importance to the Netherlands cannot be understated, especially with Virgil van Dijk ruled out of the Euro. That explains the concern for his fitness when he appeared to suffer a groin injury in training at the weekend.

Dutch coach Frank de Boer needs De Ligt, who captained Ajax in the Champions League aged just 19, starring in the side that got to the semi-finals of that competition in 2019 before being sold to Juventus in a world-record deal for a defender, the fee an initial 75 million euros ($84.2m).

A symbol of the new Dutch generation after the Oranje missed both Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, De Ligt made his full international debut as a 17-year-old.

- Jeremy Doku -

The Belgian squad is full of established stars these days, but amid concern for the fitness of Kevin De Bruyne and the form of Eden Hazard, Doku could have a notable role to play for Roberto Martinez's side.

The winger who only recently turned 19 broke through at Anderlecht and made his full Belgium debut last September, just before Rennes paid a club record 26 million euros ($31.6m) to sign him. Doku needed time to adapt to his new surroundings but finished the season strongly in France and can be a threat on either flank.

- Joao Felix -

Felix, 21, became one of the five most expensive players in history when still a teenager after Atletico Madrid agreed to pay 126 million euros ($142m) to sign him from Benfica in 2019.

Capable of playing on either flank or through the middle in attack, Felix broke through at Benfica and is fresh from helping Atletico win La Liga. He is also a symbol of the new Portuguese generation that will support Cristiano Ronaldo at this Euro as Fernando Santos' team defend the title they won in France in 2016.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has uncovered that Barcelona has "always wanted" to re-sign Neymar.

Bits of gossip about a Barcelona return for Neymar has drawn in a lot of eyeballs since the time he moved to the French capital and returned again this late spring. Neymar signed up a new deal until 2025 with PSG, in this manner precluding any expected transfer to Barcelona sooner rather than later and Al-Khelaïfi figures the previous Barcelona star didn't require a lot of persuading.

Neymar went through four years at Barcelona before his transition to PSG. He helped the Catalan goliaths win two La Liga titles, three Copa del Reys, and a UEFA Champions League title.

The Brazilian set up himself as arguably one of the best during his time at Barcelona and framed a considerable assaulting association with Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.

Neymar was tipped to be the replacement to Lionel Messi at Barcelona yet stunned the world when he finished a world-record move worth €222 million to PSG in the late spring of 2017.

Since joining PSG, Neymar has driven the club to three Ligue 1 titles, three Coupe de France trophy, and two Coupe de la Ligue titles. The forward has scored an amazing 87 goals in 116 games for PSG.

In spite of getting a charge out of progress at PSG, Neymar has frequently been connected with a move back to Barcelona. Barcelona has spent over €400 million on any semblance of Antoine Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho, and Ousmane Dembele in a bid to supplant the forward. Nonetheless, these players have to a great extent been disappointing.

PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi uncovered that it didn't take a lot to persuade Neymar to remain in the French capital. He told L'Equipe:

"Barcelona always wanted to bring Neymar back, that is no secret. But did Neymar want to go? No. It is true that at that time, his adaptation to Paris & France was still incomplete."

"It was not hard to find an agreement with Neymar. If it took so long, it was because of the health crisis. I never had any doubts."

Sergio Busquets has left Spain's pre-Euro 2020 training camp after testing positive for Covid-19, the country's football federation (RFEF) announced on Sunday.

In a statement, the RFEF said Spain captain Busquets, 32, tested positive earlier on Sunday, with the rest of the squad all testing negative.

The RFEF added that those who have been in close contact with Barcelona midfielder Busquets "will remain isolated" as a preventative measure.

The squad will carry out individual training programmes in the build-up to the Euro, which begins on Friday.

Spain's first match is against Sweden on June 14 and coach Luis Enrique has until Saturday to make changes to his squad ahead of their opening fixture in Seville.

"Appropriate sporting measures will be assessed according to the situation of the national team captain," the RFEF said.

Busquets has played over 120 times for Spain and helped his country to triumphs at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

He has also won eight Spanish league titles and three Champions Leagues with Barcelona, as well as a host of other trophies.

Kevin de Bruyne has had minor surgery on the eye socket he injured in the Champions League final and will join the Belgium squad on Monday to prepare for the Euro 2020 tournament, Belgian coach Roberto Martinez told a news conference.

There had been fears that key midfielder De Bruyne could miss part or all of the finals, but Martinez says the surgery he required was only a "small intervention".

"It's not a surgery that needs a long time recovery. This was a procedure just to make sure that the area is stronger. It took 20 minutes and everything went very well," Martinez told reporters at a news conference at the team's training centre in Tubize.

De Bruyne fractured his nose and a bone around his left eye socket in last Saturday's Champions League final playing for Manchester City in their 1-0 defeat against Chelsea.

The recovery of the 29-year-old will be a huge relief for Martinez as he attempts to steer Belgium, who are ranked the number one team in the world, to a first European title.

They open their campaign next Saturday against Russia in St Petersburg and will also play Denmark and Finland in their pool.

Before that, they take on Croatia in a final warm-up fixture on Sunday, having been held 1-1 by Greece in their previous friendly.

"(It's) a team with a lot of technical ability in the midfield area, a lot of pace, a completely different proposition (from the one) we have and it's a good opportunity for us to keep adding that sharpness and that concentration that we need in order to be ready for the Russian game," Martinez added.

Also speaking ahead of the friendly encounter, Croatian coach Zlatko Dalic said his line-up lacks the experience his team had at the World Cup three years before but said he still expected to achieve good results.

Croatia's first match in Euro 2020 will be against England, a team the Croats kicked out of the 2018 World Cup in the semi-finals.

"Surely England will have the semi-final we played at the World Cup in its mind. They will seek revenge but it's not the same to play at home (at Wembley Stadium on June 13). We expect England to be aggressive from the start of the match," Dalic said.
