Coach Gareth Southgate said England's past defeats to Germany at major tournaments have no bearing on Tuesday's Euro 2020 last-16 game and his players will go into the match focused on their own performance.

England have not defeated Germany in the knockout match of a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup final, losing at the 1990 World Cup, 1996 Euros and 2010 World Cup, the first two defeats coming after shoot-outs in the semi-finals.

Southgate, who missed the crucial spot-kick in their Euro 96 loss, said history meant little to his young squad.

"I don't need to demystify it. The history is an irrelevance for them," Southgate told ITV Sport.

"Of course, they are watching that stuff and getting a bit of an understanding of it but it's not something we're speaking to them about.

"This team has put down lots of historical performances in the last couple of years, made their own history, made their own stories and this is how they should view this game."

England have never won a knockout match over 90 minutes at the Euros. Four of their knockout stage games went to shootouts and England progressed only once -- against Spain at Wembley in 1996.

"It's an opportunity," Southgate added. "We've only won one knockout match in a European Championship as a country, so they've got a great chance to go and be the first team since 1996 to do that."

The winner of Tuesday's game will face either Sweden or Ukraine in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Austria will leave Euro 2020 after failing to get past the last 16 following Saturday's 2-1 extra-time loss to Italy but having earned a lot of praise while also making national team history along the way.

The Austrians under coach Franco Foda arrived at the tournament having not won a game in any of their previous European Championship appearances and therefore having never got past the group stage.

But Foda's team hit the ground running, firing three goals past North Macedonia in their first group match while impressing fans with their brand of attacking&nbsp;football&nbsp;and earning their maiden win in the competition.

With the team brimming with lots of top Bundesliga talent and captained by two-time Champions League winner David Alaba, the quality of Austrian players was never in doubt.

What was questioned though before the tournament was their ability to deliver when it matters at a competition, with Austria having failed to reach the second round of any competition since the 1982 World Cup.

With striker Marko Arnautovic suspended following a verbal attack on a North Macedonian player, Austria slumped to a 2-0 defeat against the Netherlands in their second game but recovered quickly to snatch a 1-0 victory over Ukraine and qualify second in their group, another first for Austria.

They produced their best performance on Saturday at Wembley Stadium when they frustrated Italy, unbeaten now for 31 games, over 90 minutes to force extra time.

Extremely disciplined and compact at the back and with an appetite to hit on the break, the Austrians had their share of chances and could have even snatched a surprise win but fatigue and brief concentration lapses proved costly in extra time as they conceded two goals.

But even then Austria refused to surrender, bagging a goal through Sasa Kalajdzic in the 114th minute and then desperately chased an equalizer in a dramatic finale.

"It is difficult to find words after such a game," Alaba said. "But we just have to be immensely proud of ourselves and Austria can be proud of us. We threw everything we had in it. We were just not rewarded for the effort."

They will, however, be leaving with a lot of newfound respect.

Football: Austria leave their Euro mark despite last-16 exit

Dominant Denmark thrashed Wales 4-0 to sweep into the European Championship quarter-finals on Saturday and continue a wave of positive emotion generated by sympathy for Christian Eriksen.

The midfielder, who is recovering from a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening game, was remembered at the start of the last 16 games in Amsterdam, again inspiring teammates.

Forward Kasper Dolberg struck in each half while Joakim Maehle and Martin Braithwaite got in on the act late on, enabling Danes to dream of repeating their 1992 Euros win while banishing Welsh hopes of matching their 2016 semi-final run.

Dolberg, making his first start of the tournament, gave his side the lead with a fine individual goal in the 27th minute, curling into the top corner from outside the area.

He doubled Denmark's advantage in Amsterdam early in the second half, ruthlessly pouncing on a loose ball after Wales failed to clear a cross following a galloping run down the right-wing from Dolberg's strike partner Braithwaite.

"This is total madness. It's surreal. It was here it all started for me, and to play here again in this setting was insane," said Dolberg, who began his career at Ajax in the same stadium.

Braithwaite missed a glaring opportunity to add to Denmark's lead but Maehle sealed the win in the 88th minute.

Wales' frustrations spilled over when Harry Wilson was sent off for a wild tackle on Maehle in added time.

Braithwaite finally got the goal he had craved by netting at the death, though he had to wait for a lengthy VAR review.

Denmark heads to Baku next Saturday to face either the Netherlands or the Czech Republic in the last eight.

"It's something bigger going on for Denmark than just what's happening on the pitch. It's obvious they're doing this for Christian Eriksen," said former Wales player Ashley Williams.

DELIGHTED DANES

Denmark were playing away from Copenhagen for the first time but still counted on loud support as thousands of their fans descended on the Johan Cruyff Arena and outnumbered the Welsh.

Kasper Hjulmand's side was without injured striker Yussuf Poulsen, who had scored in the 2-1 defeat to Belgium and 4-1 thumping of Russia which propelled them into the last 16.

Yet in a sign of the team's unity, the player joined his team on the pitch to sing the national anthem before kickoff, standing side-by-side with the substitutes and coaching staff.

Wales had a flurry of early attacks and talisman Gareth Bale nearly gave them an early lead when he went for goal from range.

"It's not how we wanted the game to go, from our point of view we started very well and then the game changed," Bale said.

"We tried to play in the second half but made a mistake to concede which killed the momentum on our side."

More than compensating for Poulsen's absence, Dolberg had more luck than Bale with a distance strike that flew past helpless Wales keeper Danny Ward for the Danes' opener.

Denmark hardly looked back from then on, dominating possession and chances as Wales failed to recreate the fighting spirit of their famous run in France five years ago.

"We needed to play at the best level we could today, we weren't able to do it. We were up against an accomplished side. Tactically Denmark understood what they needed to do," said former Wales coach Mark Hughes.

Football: Denmark demolish Wales 4-0 to reach Euro quarter-finals

Portugal have no plans to man-mark Belgium playmaker Kevin de Bruyne as it would merely play into the hands of their multi-talented side, midfielder Joao Moutinho has said ahead of Sunday's Euro 2020 last 16 tie.

De Bruyne has only played 135 minutes at the tournament but has one goal and two assists, inspiring Belgium to a 2-1 comeback over Denmark and playing a pivotal role in the 2-0 win over Finland.

Moutinho said his team would have to work hard to keep De Bruyne at bay but would be better off coming up with a plan to deprive Belgium space overall.

"If he has space to play he's even more dangerous. But if they all have space, all of them will be able to play their game more calmly and that will make our job even more difficult," he told a news conference on Saturday.

"Kevin is very competent, we have to watch him closely but not just focus on one player. That would set the others free and that would be even worse. As a team we will try to minimize their strengths and make the most of ours."

Coach Fernando Santos also ruled out targeting individuals.

"It's not about pulling one of our players over to talk about player A, B or C because we have to focus on what we have to do as a team," he said.

"We can't afford to concede them any space, because of how much quality they have in midfield and attack. The team that defends the best, who knows how to manage the ball better and create opportunities, will win the game."

Portugal, who came third in Group F with four points, have two days less to prepare for the game than Belgium, who pulled off a clean sweep of victories to top Group B.

But Moutinho dismissed suggestions that would work against his side. "We can't give it too much importance. They'll have two more days than us but we will have had four to get to the game," he said.

"It happened to us at Euro 2016 and we still managed to recover well. We just have to make sure we rest and train well and are at 100%."

Euro 2020: Portugal won't man-mark Belgium's danger man Kevin De Bruyne, says Joao Moutinho

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez said on Saturday (June 26) that their last-16 Euro 2020 showdown against holders Portugal would depend on the first goal.

"I think in those sort of games there is always depending on the first goal," he told reporters at a news conference.

"We all know that Portugal are a group of phenomenal individuals [...] and a real threat on the counter-attack."

"When you see the two types of teams that we will have on the pitch will it will depend a lot on how the first goal goes in and how the game develops at that point," he stated.

Belgium last played such an important tie three years ago when they were beaten by France in the World Cup semi-finals.

Asked about striker Cristiano Ronaldo, defender Jan Vertonghen said they had respect for him but said his team was ready to play the tournament holders.

"He's the biggest player in the history of Portugal," he said.

"But tomorrow it is not Belgium against Ronaldo, it is Belgium against Portugal. And they have a lot of good players, a lot of of quality players and we do as well. So we will be ready," he said.

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo is one goal away from setting a new record for most national team goals, while Belgium's Romelu Lukaku is Belgium's top scorer with 63 in 96 international appearances.

The comparison with the two has dominated the build-up to the last-16 clash between holders Portugal and top-ranked Belgium, in what could be the clash of the round.

England striker Harry Kane has had a disappointing start to the European Championship but said he isn't worried by a lack of goals in the group stage and hopes to peak in the knockout rounds, starting with Tuesday's last-16 clash with Germany.

Kane, England's skipper, faced criticism of his form after below-par displays led to him being substituted in both the 1-0 win over Croatia and the 0-0 draw with Scotland.

"It's definitely not the first time people have doubted me," Kane told British media. "People are quick to change their mind. It wasn't too long ago when I won the Golden Boot (as Premier League top scorer) and I was the best thing in the world.

"I've always believed in myself. I could go 10-15 games without scoring but give me a chance and I'd back myself to score it. Going into Tuesday, physically, I'm in the best shape of the tournament so far.

"I felt in Russia (at the 2018 World Cup) I started on fire, scored loads of goals, then didn't have my best performances in the most important games. So coming into this, physically, I wanted to make sure I was peaking at the right time."

The 27-year-old looked sharper in England's final Group D game, a 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic, and backed himself to prove the critics wrong in the latter stages of the tournament.

"I know, especially the first two games, I could have played better. For me, it's about trying to peak at the right time and the right time in tournament&nbsp;football&nbsp;is the knockout stages," Kane added.

"I feel good, I feel sharp. I felt good, definitely in the third game ... hopefully I can come into my best form into the knockout stage and that will help the team."

Belgium's Romelu Lukaku believes he should be classified now as a world-class striker and says everything fell into place for him in the season just finished, as he looks ahead to meeting Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the European Championship on Sunday.

The comparison with the two has dominated the build-up to the last-16 clash between holders Portugal and top-ranked Belgium in Seville, in what could be the clash of the round.

Ronaldo is one goal away from setting a new record for most national team goals, while Lukaku is Belgium’s top scorer with 63 in 96 international appearances.

"At his age, he continues to shine and I'm going to try and get as close to his achievements as possible," Lukaku said of his Portuguese rival, who he added was a major source of inspiration and motivation.

"Oh, I need competition. When someone says he's better than me, I want to transcend him. Ronaldo wants to be the best at everything,&nbsp;Kylian&nbsp;Mbappe also wants to win everything," Lukaku told reporters.

"I've taken a big step. Robert&nbsp;Lewandowski, Karim&nbsp;Benzema, and Harry Kane used to be talked about as world-class strikers. For me, those sort of comment was always limited to: 'He is in shape'. Well, now I'm world-class, too. That was my personal goal.

"It was important to start winning trophies, and the Serie A title with Inter gave me motivation and now I also want to win with the Red Devils. It would be the ultimate recognition for this team. If I play badly I will be really disappointed in myself and the team, because now is the right time to harvest."

Belgium’s golden generation has been top of the FIFA rankings for almost three years but is without a major tournament triumph, losing in the semi-finals of Russia 2018 to France three years ago.

"We were not mature enough at the World Cup against France. We tried too hard to do well and were beaten. Now we know how to win in many different kinds of ways.”

In a separate Saturday interview on Belgian television, Lukaku said success at Euro 2020 would cap a dream season.

"Everything has finally fallen into place this season. I have worked very hard in recent years and worked under the right coach at the right time. I analyzed myself a lot, and that really made a difference in playing better," he added.

World champions France are facing mounting injuries ahead of their Euro 2020 Round of 16 matches against Switzerland on Monday, with coach Didier Deschamps struggling for options.

The French qualified less convincingly than initially expected after drawing 2-2 against Portugal in their final group game, having won one of three Group F games.

France left-back Lucas Hernandez had to be taken off with a knee injury after the first half and remains doubtful against Switzerland.

His replacement Lucas Digne is also nursing a hamstring injury and looks unlikely to be fit for Monday, forcing potential changes to Deschamps' defensive plans.

Digne's replacement in the game against Portugal, midfielder Adrien Rabiot, has himself been dealing with a nagging ankle injury since the end of the season and is not yet at 100%.

To make matters worse, Thomas Lemar suffered a leg injury and Marcus Thuram hurt his right thigh in training on Thursday, hobbling off the pitch with the support of medical staff.

France is already without Ousmane Dembele after the forward had to be taken off injured in their second group game against Hungary. Dembele has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament and will require knee surgery.

But despite the injuries, France remains the clear favourites for the game against the Swiss.

Deschamps, attempting to become the first man to win World Cups and Euros both as player and coach, maybe struggling with fit defenders but he has won back a striker.

Karim Benzema, who was recalled to the national team for the tournament after a nearly six-year absence, scored twice against Portugal.

The French have also never lost to the Swiss in a competitive game. While they are very familiar with the latter stages of a tournament, their opponents have not reached a quarter-final of a major tournament in 67 years, ever since the 1954 World Cup which they hosted.

Switzerland qualified as one of the best third-placed teams.

"Anything can happen in a tournament," said Switzerland defender Ricardo Rodriguez. "We are fit and ready. We have to be compact in defense and use our few chances. We know the French have a fantastic bench as well."

"We will give it all we have. We have already trained penalties and almost everyone scored," he smiled.

The winners will play the winners of the Round of 16 ties between Spain and Croatia.

We know the French have a fantastic bench as well." "We will give it all we have. We have already trained penalties and almost everyone scored," he smiled. The winners will play the winners of the Round of 16 ties between Spain and Croatia.

Roberto Mancini urged Italy to put in a performance worthy of the "footballing Mecca" of Wembley when the Azzurri face Austria in the last 16 of Euro 2020 in London on Saturday.

Italy impressed in the group stages by winning all three games without conceding a goal to top Group A, extending their unbeaten run to 30 matches in all competitions.

They go into the clash against Austria, who finished second in Group C, as big favorites to progress to a quarter-final against Portugal or Belgium in Munich, but it will be their first game of the tournament outside of Rome.

"You always need to enjoy playing at Wembley, it is a pleasure because some players never get an opportunity to play in this stadium. It is a wonderful arena and the guys need to produce a big performance because that is what this stadium deserves," Mancini told a news conference.

"You want to be involved in matches in arenas like this. The players need to be happy to be playing at Wembley. When you play in a&nbsp;footballing Mecca like Wembley, you need to respect it and produce a big performance and I hope they do that tomorrow - in fact, I am sure they will."

Mancini has already given game time to 25 of the 26 players in his squad and the Italians impressed in a 1-0 win over Wales in their final group game despite the manager making eight changes to his starting line-up.

"Everyone has given me a selection headache because they have all played very well," Mancini said.

"We made those changes against Wales and the same went for when we brought on substitutes in the previous matches. It is great to be able to count on the players who are all fit and firing, and all fairly relaxed from a mental perspective. That could be an advantage for us."

There was much talk in the Italian media about whether the Italian players would take a knee ahead of the game against Austria, an anti-racism gesture taken by several teams, but defender Leonardo Bonucci said the squad is yet to decide.

"When we go back to the hotel, we have planned a meeting and will decide as a team," he said.

"That is what we should have done before Italy v Wales, and we will have a team meeting this evening to decide what we will do tomorrow."

When asked about it, Mancini replied: "The most important thing is one's freedom to choose."

Denmark will be playing their first game away from Copenhagen's Parken Stadium when they take on Wales in their Euro 2020 last 16 tie on Saturday (June 26) but there will still be a familiar feel in Amsterdam - a home away from home for Danish&nbsp;footballers.

The Danish national team has long been influenced by the Dutch masters at Ajax Amsterdam, and plenty of Danish players like Michael Laudrup, Morten Olsen, as a manager, and current striker Kasper Dolberg have thrived in the capital.

For Denmark to be facing Wales in a knockout game two weeks after playmaker Christian Eriksen, who made his breakthrough at Ajax, suffered a cardiac arrest in their opener against Finland, is a huge achievement. Their 4-1 win over Russia, with the team, roared on by a fanatical crowd, saw them through.

There will be no such backing in Amsterdam, however, as fewer than 2,000 tickets have been made available to Danish fans who want to attend the game.

"We have a strength now that we will try to move on with," coach Kasper Hjulmand told reporters in a news conference on Friday (June 25).

"We are looking very much forward to this game after three games at the Parken stadium that had enough feelings for a whole life. Now we are moving forward and we will crank it up tomorrow," he added.

Wales will once again rely on Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale for the creative spark they will need to break down the Danes, as well as the formidable long throw-ins of Conor Roberts.

Ethan Ampadu is suspended after his sending-off in the 1-0 defeat against Group A winners Italy and coach Rob Page is likely to revert to a flat back four after experimenting with a 3-4-3 lineup against the flying Italians.

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand is again likely to deploy 20-year-old winger Mikkel Damsgaard, who opened the scoring against Russia, in the playmaking role in place of Eriksen, but it will take another sterling collective effort if they are to advance.

The Premier League said on Friday it is funding defibrillators at grassroots clubs and facilities to save lives if someone suffers a cardiac arrest in the wake of Christian Eriksen`s collapse at the European Championship.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder collapsed in Denmark`s group opener against Finland. His life was saved when CPR was administered to him on the pitch and his heart was re-started with a defibrillator before he was taken to hospital.

The league said "more than 2,000 sites will benefit" with the first 1,000 units of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to be delivered before the 2021-22 season begins.

"The traumatic incident we all witnessed when Christian Eriksen collapsed during Euro 2020 brings into sharp focus the need for defibrillators to be more widely available across the football community," Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said.

"The welfare of participants and all those involved in football is a priority and this fund will support many people using football facilities not just with the provision of devices but also the training required to use the equipment.

"Sadly, a sudden cardiac incident could happen anytime, anywhere and we hope by enabling more facilities to have a device, it will make the difference in saving someone`s life."

Eriksen was discharged from hospital after an operation to implant a heart starter device.

Former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba, who collapsed on the pitch in an FA Cup match in 2012 and was technically "dead" for 78 minutes, welcomed the initiative.

"I know from personal experience the importance of having access to this type of medical equipment and how vital it is for someone`s survival after suffering from sudden cardiac arrest," he said.

"Educating people how to use defibrillators is crucial."

Top-ranked Belgium and their golden generation face an early reckoning at the European Championship against determined holders Portugal, who clawed their way into the last 16 to set up the potential match of the round on Sunday.

The contrast in progress could not have been greater with Belgium masterfully overcoming adversity to win all their group games, while a pugnacious Portugal saw their fortunes ebb and flow before they finished third in their section after holding world champions France to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday.

An extra day of rest was Belgium's reward for topping Group B, having seen the talismanic trio of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and Axel Witsel all return from injury after it looked as if the heart of the team had been torn out on the eve of the tournament, threatening to scupper their strong chances.

The influence of the trio was clearly displayed when they came on after a torrid first half in Belgium’s second group against Denmark, neutralizing the emotion-fueled hosts and turning a halftime deficit into a 2-1 win in Copenhagen.

That allowed Roberto Martinez to rest players in the 2-0 win over Finland on Monday in a textbook tournament scenario.

But whether it turns out to be the ideal recipe for success in the knockout phase remains to be seen. It could be counterargued that Portugal is better prepared, having had to scrap against the likes of Germany, who beat them 4-2, and France.

SIMPLER FORMULA

Portugal coach Fernando Santos offered a simpler formula.

“These matches are all like finals now and if you don’t play well, you don’t win,” he told reporters.

“In league competitions, you can play badly and still win but here at this tournament, at this stage, if you don’t play well, you’ll lose... every time.”

Portugal has their own talisman in Cristiano Ronaldo, who needs one more goal to become the all-time top scorer in international soccer.

“He is in the form of his life,” said Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld, “but as a team, we can stop him. That has always been our strength.”

“But they will be difficult, they are a real tournament team,” he added.

The juxtaposition between the match-winning capabilities of Ronaldo and Belgium’s own prolific marksman Romelu Lukaku adds intrigue to the game at La Cartuja stadium

With 63 goals for his country, Lukaku, who is eight years younger than Ronaldo, might one day challenge the Portugal captain’s record.

Spain striker Alvaro Morata said he has received vicious abuse on social media during Euro 2020 and that his wife and children have been shouted at on the streets of Seville.

Morata has been the center of attention since before the tournament began after being booed by Spain fans in a friendly with Portugal and then missing big opportunities in the 0-0 draw with Sweden and 1-1 draw with Poland.

He also missed a penalty in Spain's 5-0 win over Slovakia on Wednesday.

"I would like people to put themselves in my shoes and think what it's like to get threats towards my family, people saying 'I hope your children die'. I've had to leave my phone outside my room," Morata told a Spanish radio station, Cadena Cope.

"My wife and children have come to the stadium in Seville with Morata on the back of their shirts and people have been shouting at them. It's complicated. I understand people booing me for missing chances but there's a limit."

Morata said he had a sleepless night after missing the penalty against Slovakia, which set up a last-16 tie with Croatia but does not regret taking the spot-kick.

He said that despite the abuse and criticism he has faced he feels a huge level of support from his teammates, adding former Spain great Iker Casillas had called him to lift his spirits.

"I'm proud of the fact I picked up the ball (to take the penalty) after people booed me in the warm-up. A few years ago I would have been devastated but I'm really motivated. Whoever thinks the opposite doesn't know me," he said.

"It's hard to find a group like this, especially in the difficult times. After a week like this, I've been aware of how everyone looks at me but I look in their eyes and see they are supporting me."

Marcus Rashford said he will wait until the end of England's European Championship campaign to decide whether he needs an operation to repair a shoulder problem.

Rashford, who has yet to start a game at the tournament, picked up the injury in November while playing for Manchester United.

"It's either an operation or I don't get an operation,"

"I'm not 100% sure if I need it yet, so I'll just take it as it comes," Rashford told British media on Thursday. "I'll finish strong here and I've got a few weeks off to just relax and decide what I'm going to do."

Rashford said he did not know how long he would be out if he underwent surgery.

The 23-year-old struggled for fitness and form at the end of last season for United, scoring once in their final 10 games and conceded he has not been at his best at the Euros.

"Whatever that is down to, it doesn't really matter because it has been going on since early on in the season," Rashford said. "I managed to get through the season with United.

"I think I had 36 goal involvements so I can't look back at the year and say 'mmm, I should have taken time off to do this and do that'. That's just not the way I look at things. I just want to be available for every game."

UEFA on Thursday scrapped the away goals rule from all of its club competition from the 2021-22 season. The rule was used to get the winner of a two-legged knockout tie in cases where both the teams had scored the same number of goals over the period of two matches. <o:p></o:p>

The away goals rule was introduced in 1965 and is behind many of the spectacular moments since then. Many minnows have upstaged giants due to away goals rule while there have been many comebacks and heartbreaking moments relating to the rule.<o:p></o:p>

Bengaluru United goalkeeper Srijith Ramesh draws inspiration from the former Indian footballer Gouramangi Singh, and believes that the retired centre-back is hugely beneficial for the Bengaluru United squad. Gouramangi Singh made 71 appearances for the Indian national team over the course of his playing career and is currently the first-team coach of I-League 2nd Division side Bengaluru United.

“Gouramangi serves as an ideal role model for each player at the club because of what he has already done in his playing career, and how he continues to dedicate himself to training every single day. His insight feels very easy to relate to because he can analyse each situation from a player’s perspective and help the team out. Moreover, he is a very approachable person and he takes a lot of interest in each player, particularly in the defensive unit of the team, as that’s where his biggest expertise lies,” said the 25-year-old goalkeeper from Karnataka.

It would seem that Srijith is on his way to follow the footsteps of the former India international and looks up to the player-turned-coach in more ways than one. Apart from serving the club as the custodian between the goalposts, Srijith also coaches the kids in the Bengaluru United Academy.

“I work with very young players in the Under-8 and Under-12 age categories from the Academy. The primary focus when I am working with such young kids is to try to make them fall in love with the game. At this age, more than developing their skills right away, a coach needs to ensure that they have fun playing football. This way, they will continue playing the sport in their formative years and get better at the game. Although the training is very different in the Academy structure and the first team, the approach to coaching is an aspect in which I can learn from Gouramangi,” Srijith said.

Bengaluru United has adopted a pioneering approach in creating a pathway for first-team players to become trainers by enabling them to take up coaching responsibilities in the youth setup. Srijith is making the most of this opportunity at the moment.

“I have been with the club since its inception, and I always wanted to do more. I have some time to spare on my hands after the first-team training sessions, and I wanted to proactively take up coaching the kids at this time. The senior management and staff at Bengaluru United have fully encouraged this move. Richard Hood (Head Coach, Bengaluru United) has been a great mentor for me and offered his support at each step. He has worked in Indian grassroots football for over 8 years now, so he naturally has a lot to offer when it comes to youth development in football,” said Srijith.

Cristiano Ronaldo on Wednesday equalised former Iranian striker Ali Daei’s all-time international goal-scoring record as the Portuguese maestro scored his 109th goal for Portugal in Euro 2020 match against France.<o:p></o:p>

The Portuguese forward, also the leading goal-scorer in Euro history, netted a brace from the penalty spot to help his side reach the knockouts of the tournament while also matching the iconic record in his 178th international match.<o:p></o:p>

The 36-year-old is also the first to appear at five editions of the Euro and has already netted five goals in three Group F matches. While Portugal, Germany and France qualified from the ‘group of death’, Hungary missed out on qualification despite a gutsy fight.<o:p></o:p>

The Juventus forward has now 14 European Championship goals, five more than French legend Michel Platini.<o:p></o:p>

Ronaldo bagged his first international goal in Euro 2004 and has since risen as one of the all-time greats if not the greatest footballer.

&nbsp;Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic was overjoyed to have steered his side into the Euro 2020 knockout stages after second-half goals from Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic helped them to a 3-1 Group D win over Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday.

Both teams needed a win to advance and after Callum McGregor cancelled out Nikola Vlasic's opener for the Croatians, Modric netted a superb long-range effort before Perisic sealed the win with a glancing header.

It was a much-improved performance by the 2018 World Cup runners-up after tepid displays in a 1-0 defeat by England and a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic.

"Congratulations to the lads for an effervescent performance that propelled us into the knockout rounds and we will now be ready for whoever comes our way in the last 16," Dalic told a news conference.

"The most important thing is that we will be able to have our fans back because we are much stronger with them roaring us on from the terraces."

The Croatians, who face the Group E runners-up in Copenhagen on Monday, were cheered on by only a handful of fans in London and Glasgow as COVID-19 quarantine rules deterred many from making the trip to Britain.

With Croatian media speculating that Dalic would have been sacked if the team had suffered an early exit, the 54-year-old coach was relieved that his players delivered their best performance when it mattered.

"We were compact and although we let Scotland back into the game late in the first half, we talked things over at halftime and never lost our heads," he said.

"It was a matter of time before we scored the second and what a fantastic goal by Luka, it's amazing how he keeps going a at this level. I am proud to have him as the team captain."

Modric was emotional after a fine individual display reminiscent of his performances in the 2018 World Cup.

"After tonight's performance, we'd have been able to walk off the pitch with our heads high even if we had lost," he told Croatia's HRT state television broadcaster.

"The goal I scored means a lot to me and I am glad it helped us win, but the most important thing is that the whole team looked the part."

Spain are bracing themselves for a test of nerve in their last group game against Slovakia on Wednesday, with Luis Enrique's side needing victory to guarantee their place in the last 16.

After leaving out Sergio Ramos, Luis Enrique has left himself open to questions about a lack of leadership in his youthful squad.

A bright start against Sweden fizzled out in the second half while a missed penalty against Poland turned a decent display into one paralysed by anxiety and tension.

"This country has won the Euro and the World Cup but in this squad there are many youngsters," Cesar Azpilicueta said on Monday.

"There are several captains in our team, we know how to act and everyone is going to give their all on Wednesday."

Captain Sergio Busquets is expected to return after rejoining the group on Friday following his negative Covid-19 test. Busquets has not played in either of Spain's first two matches.

"He's an important player, with his experience on and off the pitch," Azpilicueta said. "He's an incredible captain and we know the dominance he can bring in midfield. We're very happy he's back."

Azpilicueta said Spain can draw inspiration from Chelsea's triumph in the Champions League last season.

He lifted Chelsea's second European Cup after the team changed gear under new coach Thomas Tuchel, a superb finish culminating in a surprise victory over Manchester City in the final.

<h2>- Not about 'how you start' -</h2>

Spain are pinning their hopes on a similar transformation after two disappointing draws against Sweden and Poland mean&nbsp;they currently sit third, a point behind Slovakia and two behind Sweden in Group E.

"It's not how you start, it's how you finish," said Azpilicueta.

"I have seen it this year in the Champions League. Before January we weren't very good, and after that we did very well.&nbsp;

"A lot of people gave us up for dead last season, they thought we were out of the Champions League, out of the race for top four. People write you off but you never give up."&nbsp;

Despite his excellent form for Chelsea, Azpilicueta has rarely been favoured by Luis Enrique and has started on the bench for both of Spain's opening two games.

"We are all fighting for places," he said. "For now, we don't know anything about the next line-up."

Azpilicueta's experience might be a valuable addition to a youthful Spanish team, who now find themselves under pressure to make it out of what looked a straightforward group.

"We are not in the situation we expected," Azpilicueta said. "We would have liked to be more comfortable but football rarely gives you what you expect. We are alive and we depend on ourselves.

"We must be humble, self-critical and correct what we are doing wrong and also assess what we are doing well. It's a combination of the two. It's an all or nothing game so we have to approach it with the confidence that we will go through.

"The situation is not what we hoped it would be but you can't just say: 'We didn't win the first two games, that's us out.’&nbsp;

"You have to fight to the end and all pull in the same direction. Now we have a clear objective and it's important we have the right mentality because Wednesday is do or die, we have to approach it like that."

Football: Doubts hang over Spain ahead of 'do or die' game against Slovakia

The World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday it was "concerned" that countries were easing virus restrictions around the football games at the Euro 2020, noting some areas were already seeing rising cases.

"WHO is concerned about easing of restrictions in some of the host countries... A few of the stadiums hosting the tournament are now increasing the number of spectators allowed into the stadium to watch a game," Robb Butler, an executive director at WHO's Regional Office for Europe, said in a statement to AFP.

UEFA has declined a request from the mayor of Munich to lit up the Allianz Arena in rainbow colours for the Euro 2020 Group F match between Germany and Hungary. <o:p></o:p>

UEFA said that it received a request from the mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, on Monday as he wanted to light up the stadium in the rainbow colours to protest against a new law in Hungary, that bans the circulation of content in schools deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change.<o:p></o:p>

The Allianz Arena, the home stadium of Bayern Munich, is designed to allow the external area and roof to be lit up in various colours.<o:p></o:p>

The decision comes after UEFA dropped an investigation into Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer wearing a rainbow coloured armband in the Euro 2020 matches against Portugal and France.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper was wearing the armband, seen as a symbol of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, during Pride Month in June.<o:p></o:p>

However, UEFA has now said it could not accept the request and proposed alternative dates for the Allianz Arena to be lit up in rainbow colours.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Statement from UEFA:<o:p></o:p></h2>

"UEFA has yesterday received a request from the mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, on behalf of the city council, to have the arena in Munich illuminated in rainbow colours at the upcoming UEFA EURO 2020 group stage match between Germany and Hungary.<o:p></o:p>

"In this letter, the mayor outlines the reasoning behind this request to be a political decision which has been taken by the Hungarian parliament.<o:p></o:p>

"UEFA understands that the intention is also to send a message to promote diversity and inclusion - a cause, which UEFA has been supporting for many years having joined forces with European clubs, national teams and their players, launching campaigns and plenty of activities all over Europe to promote the ethos that football should be open to everyone and consequently UEFA has proposed alternative dates for the illumination which align better with existing events.<o:p></o:p>

"UEFA is determined to play its part in positive change and believes that discrimination can only be fought in close collaboration with others.<o:p></o:p>

"As European football's governing body, UEFA recognises it has an obligation to unite and coordinate the efforts of fans and institutions across Europe - because it is everybody's responsibility to rid discrimination from the game.<o:p></o:p>

"Very recently, in the build up towards the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament, UEFA has kicked off a new campaign called 'Sign for an Equal Game' encouraging fans, players, clubs, national associations and other football stakeholders to join the fight against discrimination. Sign for an Equal Game forms the latest instalment of the Equal Game campaign, which has run for the past four seasons and which aims to create positive social impact under UEFA's overarching value of Respect. Its main purpose is to make people aware that football is for everyone, no matter who they are, where they are from and how they play.<o:p></o:p>

"Racism, homophobia, sexism, and all forms of discrimination are a stain on our societies - and represent one of the biggest problems faced by the game today. Discriminatory behaviour has marred both matches themselves and, outside the stadiums, the online discourse around the sport we love.<o:p></o:p>

"However UEFA, through its statutes, is a politically and religiously neutral organisation. Given the political context of this specific request - a message aiming at a decision taken by the Hungarian national parliament - UEFA must decline this request.<o:p></o:p>

UEFA said that it received a request from the mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, on Monday as he wanted to light up the stadium in the rainbow colours to protest against a new law in Hungary, that bans the circulation of content in schools deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change.

UEFA has declined a request from the mayor of Munich to lit up the Allianz Arena in rainbow colours for the Euro 2020 Group F match between Germany and Hungary. UEFA said that it received a request from the mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, on Monday as he wanted to light up the stadium in the rainbow colours to protest against a new law in Hungary, that bans the circulation of content in schools deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change. The Allianz Arena, the home stadium of Bayern Munich, is designed to allow the external area and roof to be lit up in various colours. The decision comes after UEFA dropped an investigation into Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer wearing a rainbow coloured armband in the Euro 2020 matches against Portugal and France. ALSO READ: Football: Doubts hang over Spain ahead of 'do or die' game against Slovakia The Bayern Munich goalkeeper was wearing the armband, seen as a symbol of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, during Pride Month in June. However, UEFA has now said it could not accept the request and proposed alternative dates for the Allianz Arena to be lit up in rainbow colours. Statement from UEFA: "UEFA has yesterday received a request from the mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, on behalf of the city council, to have the arena in Munich illuminated in rainbow colours at the upcoming UEFA EURO 2020 group stage match between Germany and Hungary. "In this letter, the mayor outlines the reasoning behind this request to be a political decision which has been taken by the Hungarian parliament. "UEFA understands that the intention is also to send a message to promote diversity and inclusion - a cause, which UEFA has been supporting for many years having joined forces with European clubs, national teams and their players, launching campaigns and plenty of activities all over Europe to promote the ethos that football should be open to everyone and consequently UEFA has proposed alternative dates for the illumination which align better with existing events. "UEFA is determined to play its part in positive change and believes that discrimination can only be fought in close collaboration with others. "As European football's governing body, UEFA recognises it has an obligation to unite and coordinate the efforts of fans and institutions across Europe - because it is everybody's responsibility to rid discrimination from the game. Its main purpose is to make people aware that football is for everyone, no matter who they are, where they are from and how they play. "Racism, homophobia, sexism, and all forms of discrimination are a stain on our societies - and represent one of the biggest problems faced by the game today. Discriminatory behaviour has marred both matches themselves and, outside the stadiums, the online discourse around the sport we love. "However UEFA, through its statutes, is a politically and religiously neutral organisation. Given the political context of this specific request - a message aiming at a decision taken by the Hungarian national parliament - UEFA must decline this request. "UEFA has nevertheless proposed to the city of Munich to illuminate the stadium with the rainbow colours on either 28 June - the Christopher Street Liberation Day - or between 3 and 9 July which is the Christopher Street Day week in Munich."

Euro 2020: UEFA refuses Allianz Arena rainbow illumination for Germany vs Hungary match

Denmark made it through to the last 16 of Euro 2020 on Monday after a convincing 4-1 win over Russia which alongside Belgium's victory against Finland meant they finished second in Group B.

Goals from Mikkel Damsgaard, Yussuf Poulsen, Andreas Christensen and Joakim Maehle gave the Danes their first win of the tournament on a joyous evening at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Delirious fans showered each other with beer as Denmark rattled in the goals that allowed them to end the group stage in party mood after the trauma of Christian Eriksen's mid-match collapse in their opening fixture against the Finns.

Kasper Hjulmand's team will face Wales in the last 16 in Amsterdam on Saturday, while the Russians go home after coming off worst in a three-way, head-to-head tie-breaker with Finland and the Danes.

"I've never experienced anything like this. The atmosphere gets better every time we are here at Parken," said Maehle to Danish broadcaster DR.

Hjulmand praised the "amazing" team spirit and friendship after revelling in the on-pitch celebrations.

"If anyone deserves this it's our players. I can't imagine how they managed to come back from what they went through," he told reporters.

"I think it helps the team and hopefully it gives the whole country some good moments."

The Danes came into the match with no points from their first two matches but knowing a win over Russia by two goals or more and defeat for Finland would guarantee them passage from the group as the second-placed team.

During the match's opening ceremony, a huge Denmark shirt with "Eriksen 10" written on it was unfurled to deafening cheers from supporters, after which a rousing rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" was belted out from the stands.

Once the match got underway, Denmark continued with the same aggression as in their defeats to Finland and Belgium but initially struggled to create chances against a Russia team who were content to keep things tight.

The nominal home team, Russia enraged the Danish fans by taking their time over set-pieces and throw-ins as early as midway through the first half.

However it was the Russians who had the first chance of the game, Aleksandr Golovin driving towards the goal and fashioning a great scoring opportunity only to shoot straight at Kasper Schmeichel from close range.

<h2>- Damsgaard's moment -</h2>

They were left to rue missing that chance six minutes before the break when Damsgaard showed why he was picked to replace Eriksen as Denmark's playmaker.

The Sampdoria winger, who only turns 21 early next month, looked like he had all the time in the world when he unleashed a curling strike that whipped passed Matvei Safonov and caused an eruption in the stands.

Their tails up and the crowd now bouncing in unison, Jannik Vestergaard came close to making it two in as many minutes when he headed a corner just wide.

Denmark continued to press after the restart but their second came in almost comical circumstances on the hour mark.

Poulsen could hardly believe his luck when Daler Kuzyaev's miscued back-pass rolled straight to him in front of the Russian goal, leaving him the simple task of stroking into an empty net and giving Denmark the two-goal lead they needed to finish second should Belgium win.

Soon after, the already rowdy fans in the Parken let out possibly the loudest cheer of the night as news of Romelu Lukaku's opener against Finland filtered through, but they were soon dampened by that goal being ruled out and Russia being awarded a penalty which was slotted home by Artem Dzyuba.

They were on their feet again with 15 minutes remaining thanks to Lukas Hradecky's own goal which put Belgium a goal ahead and Denmark in second.

Denmark were now charging forward and Safonov had to pull of three incredible saves in quick succession before Christensen rammed home a superb long-range strike in the 79th minute.

As the fans, who had made a tremendous racket all game, began their celebrations for making the knockout stage, Denmark ended the group stage in style when Maehle slotted home the fourth three minutes later to complete a perfect evening.

The players and coaching staff then all huddled together in the centre circle as they waited for confirmation of Belgium's win before breaking out into wild celebrations amid fantastic cheers from the stands.

Football: Denmark thump Russia at Euro 2020 to make last 16 in stunning fashion

England are not bothered by the "noise" from outside the camp ahead of Tuesday's final Euro 2020 Group D match against the Czech Republic as they focus their efforts on qualifying for the knockout rounds, forward Raheem Sterling said.

England kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win over 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia but were held to a goalless draw by Scotland in the second match.

Gareth Southgate's team are second in their group on four points, behind the Czechs on goal difference, and a draw would see both teams advance regardless of the outcome of the game between Croatia and Scotland, who are both on one point.

"I do feel there's a bit of an over-reaction on the whole," Sterling told British media on Sunday. "I just feel there's more of a panic on the outside than inside the building.

"I don't see anyone in the camp that feels any pressure or feels hard done by. As much as we can inside the building the best thing we can do is focus on the training field, focus on what's being doing inside.

"We really shouldn't be looking what the papers are saying, what pundits are saying. That's something we need to take for the rest of this tournament, the more you listen to outside noise, the more it can affect you."

England manager Gareth Southgate looks likely to resist the clamor for a major change in approach for Tuesday's final Euro 2020 Group D match against the Czech Republic at Wembley.

The disappointing performance in Friday's goalless draw with Scotland has led to calls from pundits and fans for Southgate to adopt a more positive style.

But while some personnel changes could be on the cards, it is not expected that the England manager will switch to the kind of attacking lineup some of his critics have been demanding.

The Czechs are top of the table on four points, ahead of England on goal difference, and a draw would see both teams advance regardless of the outcome of the game between Croatia and Scotland, who are both on one point.

So while critics may be demanding Southgate switch to a more offensive lineup, he will know the priority is to make it safely into the last 16.

On Sunday, Southgate took the unusual step of announcing that captain Harry Kane, whose sluggish displays have worried England fans, will definitely start against the Czechs.

Since the Scotland game, he has also pushed back gently against those who have been calling for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, who has yet to feature, to be given a slot on the right-wing.

"We've got some explosive options and a lot of them are young players and experiencing a big tournament for the first time," he said.

"So as a coaching staff we are realistic about our expectations of them as individuals.

"Jadon is in that mix. He's trained well the last few days and of course, we have got those options and those decisions to make," he said.

Sancho, linked with a move to Manchester United after a strong season in the Bundesliga, would be an alternative to Raheem Sterling, who scored the goal in the opening 1-0 win over Croatia, but who he has been struggling for form over recent months.

The most popular change Southgate could make is to bring creative midfielder Jack Grealish into the side, but even if he does introduce the Aston Villa player it is unlikely to be part of a major tactical shift.

Czech Republic assistant coach Jiri Chytry said England's display against Scotland was impacted by the special nature of the all-British clash.

"We expect to face the extremely strong England we know from recent years. Their team is well-balanced with experienced players from top-class clubs, talented youngsters. We are not reading much into the performance against Scotland: it was a derby with its own specific characteristics," he said.

Czech striker Patrik Schick is the joint top scorer, with Cristiano Ronaldo, in the tournament so far has grabbed three goals in the opening two games -- including his wonderful long-range strike against Scotland.

Football: England manager Gareth Southgate unlikely to take risks against Czechs

Denmark are without a point in a Euro 2020 campaign dominated by Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest, but they hope fans will rouse them for Monday's last-chance game against Russia.

"It's like our Euros are starting right now," coach Kasper Hjulmand said on Sunday ahead of the game at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen where fans have stayed passionately behind the team during narrow defeats to Finland and Belgium.

"We have a knock-out game ahead of us and only if we win we will have the chance to move further in the tournament," the 49-year-old manager told a news conference.

"We respect Russia, it's going to be a tough game and we need the support we had last time (against Belgium)."

Danish fans were left stunned and emotional after midfielder Eriksen's collapse in the opener, with the players looking shell-shocked when play resumed and Finland scored to win 1-0.

An outpouring of support from the stadium propelled the Danes to an early lead and stirring performance against top-ranked Belgium in the next game, but despite scoring an early goal they also lost that game 2-1.

"For us, to sit here with zero points still is also painful, so it is a massive opportunity for us," said goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

With a normal capacity of just over 38,000, the stadium held 16,000 for the opener and 25,000 against Belgium, and on Monday another 25,000 will be present for Denmark's last roll of the dice.

Belgium top Group B on six points with the Danes bottom on zero and need to beat Russia to have any chance of advancing to the knockout stage. Finland, who like Russia have three points, take on Belgium in St. Petersburg at the same time to decide the outcome of the group.

Hailed as a hero for his quick action and leadership after Eriksen collapsed, Denmark captain Simon Kjaer said the team deserved success.

"We go into the game with the mentality that we have to get there (to the knockout stage), and after everything we've been through I think we deserve it," the central defender said.

"You can be sure that everything will be left out on the pitch tomorrow - with the support and the quality that this team has, I'm confident about the match."

Russia, who have not reached the knockout stage of a European championship since 2008, need either a win against Denmark to get into the last 16 or a draw if Finland fail to beat Denmark in the other Group B match on Monday."We think that this will be a difficult match," Cherchesov told a news conference, highlighting Denmark's explosive play and Yussuf Poulsen's early goal in the Danes' 2-1 loss to Belgium, the world's highest-ranked side.

France forward Ousmane Dembele has been ruled out of Euro 2020 with an injury, the French&nbsp;football&nbsp;federation said on Monday, in a blow to the world champions' ambitions.

Dembele had come on as a second-half substitute in the world champions' 1-1 Group F draw against Hungary on Saturday and had an immediate impact on their attack, but limped off with an apparent knee injury.

"Ousmane Dembele had an X-ray at the Budapest hospital on Sunday night," the FFF said in a statement, without elaborating on the nature of the injury.

"The recovery time is incompatible with him staying in the squad. After discussing with the player and (team doctor) Franck le Gall, (coach) Didier Deschamps has acknowledged that Ousmane Dembele is ruled out for the rest of the tournament."

Germany's surprising flamboyant 4-2 victory over holders Portugal not only boosted their chances of a Euro 2020 knockout spot but also triggered belated enthusiasm among fans that they could actually battle for the title.

"With the win over Portugal we arrived at the tournament," said Joachim Loew, whose side need a win against Hungary in their last Group F match on Wednesday to guarantee qualification.

Loew will leave at the end of the tournament after 15 years in charge including the 2014 World Cup title. He would love to finish on another high and confound the unusually low expectations for Germany going into this European Championship.

"Our win over Portugal was deserved. Such success gives you a certain strength and in a tournament, it is all about taking one step at a time. The game against Hungary could be even tougher because they will not play so high up."

The three-time European and four-time world champions are desperate to make amends for their first-round shock 2018 World Cup exit and a string of disappointing results since.

After a lacklustre opening defeat to tournament favourites France, the Germans turned on the turbo against the Portuguese with a superb attacking performance that transformed them from underdogs to contenders.

"There are enough strong teams in the tournament," Loew said. "But those teams that play two perfect games in the first round, where everything seems to work like clockwork, have only rarely gone on to win tournaments."

The Germans will need to draw on their new confidence against the Hungarians, who are also in the running to advance after earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw with France.

Germany have three points, as many as Portugal and one behind group leaders France. They will advance with a victory but could also qualify with a draw if France do not lose their game against the Portuguese.

Hungary, in the last place on one point, needs a win to have any hope of progressing.

Playing in front of a home crowd in Munich, the Germans are expected to attack again from the start, with Loew unlikely to tinker with his frontline, after he had also kept it unchanged against Portugal from their France defeat.

Serge Gnabry is set to reprise his role as a centre forward with Thomas Mueller and Kai Havertz on either side and speedy holding midfielders Joshua Kimmich and Robin Gosens charging down their wings.

"Against Hungary, we must now pick up where we left off and improve further," Loew added.

Germany's surprising flamboyant 4-2 victory over holders Portugal not only boosted their chances of a Euro 2020 knockout spot but also triggered belated enthusiasm among fans that they could actually battle for the title.

The game against Hungary could be even tougher because they will not play so high up." Football: Germany's slow start in Euro not worrying, says Joachim Loew

Spain&nbsp;were again haunted by their inability to finish off chances as they drew 1-1 with&nbsp;Poland&nbsp;on Saturday after missing a second-half penalty to leave their hopes of making the Euro 2020 knockout stage hanging in the balance.

Alvaro Morata gave&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;the lead in the 25th minute but&nbsp;Poland, who had hit the woodwork twice in the first half, deservedly drew level with a towering header from Robert Lewandowski in the 54th.

Spain&nbsp;were given a penalty soon after but Gerard Moreno blasted his shot against the post and Morata scuffed the rebound wide, leaving Luis Enrique's side cursing their profligacy just as in their goalless opening draw with Sweden.

Saturday's draw left&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;third in&nbsp;Group&nbsp;E with two points and needing a win against Slovakia on Wednesday to guarantee their place in the next round.

Poland&nbsp;are bottom with one point but head into their&nbsp;final&nbsp;game&nbsp;against Sweden with a chance of reaching the last 16.

"We are raging," said&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;captain Jordi Alba.

"We kept on trying until the end but were against a really tough opponent and we lacked a bit of luck."

Morata added: "It's another&nbsp;game&nbsp;that has escaped from our grasp and our next&nbsp;game&nbsp;will be like a&nbsp;final&nbsp;to get through."

Poland&nbsp;felt a huge sense of redemption after losing their opener 2-1 to Slovakia.

"Before this&nbsp;game, hardly anyone believed in us. But sometimes you have to take two steps back to take another one forward," said defender Kamil Glik.

"I'm glad that we will play the real&nbsp;final&nbsp;against Sweden and I hope that -- even if it's a bit late, the tournament started for us today."

SPAIN&nbsp;DIRECT

Spain&nbsp;played less fluid football than against Sweden but were more direct, while&nbsp;Poland&nbsp;showed far more ambition than the Swedes had and came close to taking an early lead when Mateusz Klich let fly from long range and struck the top of the bar.

But it was&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;who went in front when Moreno cut in from the right wing to cross with his stronger left foot and Morata diverted the ball into the net.

The striker was initially flagged offside but a VAR review gave him the goal and he ran to the sideline to embrace coach Luis Enrique, who has shown so much faith in him in the last two weeks after Morata was booed twice by&nbsp;Spain's supporters.

Spain&nbsp;nearly doubled their lead when Moreno flashed a free kick wide but&nbsp;Poland&nbsp;came within inches of equalising when Karol Swiderski's shot skidded off the post and into the path of Lewandowski, who was thwarted by a fine save from Unai Simon.

Spain&nbsp;should have struck again at the end of the first half when Moreno hit the side netting from close range.

Poland&nbsp;kept testing the Spanish defence and deservedly found a way through when Lewandowski soared to head Kamil Jozwiak's cross into the bottom corner.

Spain&nbsp;got an unexpected chance to restore their lead when Moreno was caught by Jakub Moder but Moreno, who scored all 13 penalties he took last season for Villarreal, hammered his spot kick against the post and Morata could not keep his composure either when the ball bounced towards him.

Luis Enrique's side kept looking for a winner but had none of their customary cool and resorted to long balls into the box.

They were not far from finding another goal though, substitute Ferran Torres heading wide and&nbsp;Poland&nbsp;keeper Wojciech Szczesny making two brave saves to thwart Ferran and Morata from point-blank range.
