Kevin De Bruyne is still struggling with a dead feeling on the left-hand side of his face after a double fracture but said it would not hinder his performance at the European Championship.

Finland's task of reaching the knockout stages of Euro 2020 will be made tougher by Roberto Martinez's decision to field Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Axel Witsel when the two meet in their last Euro 2020 group game in St. Petersburg on Monday.

Despite his side topping the group with two wins from two games, the Belgian boss wants to gauge the form and fitness of the trio, dashing any hopes the Finns may have had of meeting a weakened side as they try to secure themselves a spot in the last 16.

"We are not here to go as far as we can, but rather to be as good as we can. And that means you have to win every game," Martinez told reporters.

The group is still wide open with Finland and Russia having three points and Denmark zero but the Danes, now without playmaker Christian Eriksen who suffered a cardiac arrest in their first game, could throw themselves back into the mix by beating the Russians in Copenhagen.

A win against Belgium would see Finland through, and a draw gives them a good chance of securing either second or third place in the group, with the best four of the third-placed teams in the six groups also set to advance.

Belgium will be missing Timothy Castagne, who suffered a facial fracture in the win against Russia and will take no further part in the tournament, but the rest of the squad has been given a clean bill of health.

The Finns will again seek to defend deep and hit on the break, and Monday's clash would be a perfect time for Finnish striker Teemo Pukki, who scored 10 times in qualifying, to get his first goal at the Euros.

The size of the task can be seen at a glance in the world rankings - Belgium is ranked first, and a victory for the 54th-placed Finns would surely be one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament.

Portugal defender Ruben Dias said a grueling season with club side Manchester City had motivated him for Euro 2020 and he hoped to outdo himself in the national team's title defense.

Center-back Dias, who was named England's&nbsp;Footballer of the Year by the&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Writers' Association, played 50 matches for City in all competitions in the 2020-21 campaign apart from his national team commitments.

"This just motivates me. I like to outdo myself and I like to play always on the red line," Dias told reporters.

Global players' union FIFPRO warned that player welfare was not being considered when competition calendars were drawn up.

The Euros were postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 crisis, which delayed the start of the 2020-21 season and forced European leagues to complete the demanding season in time for the summer tournament.

A number of top club coaches criticized the compressed schedule but Dias played down the impact of fatigue.

"I want to do things that nobody has done before and the chance to represent my country with all these games behind me only motivates me further," Dias said.

"This also leads me to believe I can show that I'm doing well, that I'm strong, and that I can keep on playing."

Portugal began their campaign by beating Hungary 3-0 and take on Germany in their Group F match later on Saturday.

"Our expectations are that we're going to be facing one of the best teams in the Euros," Dias said.

"We're also one of the best teams and we're fully aware that even if we started off on the right foot we need to have our feet planted firmly on the ground."

England manager Gareth Southgate said he substituted Harry Kane in Friday's 0-0 draw with Scotland in the European Championship to inject much-needed energy into the team after yet another subdued display by the skipper.

Kane looked leggy and starved of service as he struggled to make an impact in the Group D game at Wembley Stadium, managing only 19 touches throughout before being replaced by Marcus Rashford in the 74th minute.

"I felt we needed a few more runs in behind and Marcus would give us that energy," Southgate told reporters, explaining his decision to replace Kane for the second straight match.

"We have to base these decisions on what we see. We've got to be better and that starts with me. We didn't have enough attempts at goal and need to look at that over the next few days."

Southgate, whose side take on the Czech Republic in their final group match on Tuesday, refused to single out Kane for criticism and said that the team must strive to be better.

"And that's right across the board. So it's not just about one person," Southgate said.

"Scotland, I thought marked him extremely well. With the back five there isn't a lot of space, and of course, anything that was played up, they were aggressive, they defended well.

"We've got to go away and review the game and find those answers for the game with the Czech Republic."

Gareth Southgate's words were echoed by midfielder Declan Rice, who said Scotland had nailed their plans to nullify striker Kane.

"He's a world-class player and we need to get the ball to him to score," Rice said. "With the press and social media there might be an over-reaction now, but we have to stay positive."

Hungary will leave everything on the pitch against world champions France in their Group F match on Saturday in Budapest, coach Marco Rossi said, noting wryly that the French team is worth 15 times more than his side.

"Of course if their squad are worth 900 million euros and we are only worth 60 million cumulatively, then we might actually see that difference on the pitch," Rossi told a press conference.

Hungary are the underdogs in a "Group of Death" with France, Germany and Portugal. They had been holding defending champions Portugal to a goalless draw until the 84th minute in their opener on Tuesday, only to concede three goals in the closing minutes.

It will likely stick to its customary defence-heavy tactics against another team boasting a world-class attacking line, Rossi said.

"When you come up against... players with so much pace on their side, pressing them high will afford them space behind, so you don`t want to stretch the pitch and have space between the different areas.

"If we set up in one way against Portugal it`s more than likely we`ll be in similar fashion against France," he said. "We need to produce a perfect performance form every perspective."

Rossi added that against such teams luck needs to be on Hungary`s side to achieve a surprise.

"We need to make sure, or hope, that France are off their game tomorrow," he said. "We would love to get a good result but I am even more interested in continued progress."

Hungary is widely considered a tough opponent even for top-class teams, with a solid defence and counter-attacks capable of surprising anyone - a far cry from much weaker teams in recent decades.

Rossi said his side, although unlikely to advance, must give their all against a French team that may well rest a few players in preparation for a deep run, possibly all the way to the finals.

He also said that even though the weather is expected to be extremely hot, the team must not allow themselves to succumb to fatigue.

"We need to run more without the ball than them," Rossi said of the expected French possession superiority. "This is going to be more difficult in the heat, so we need to make sure we run intelligently."

"We can`t be tired after just four days. We did everything to be rested... No excuses, no ifs, no buts, we are here and we will go out there, and there is no such thing as fatigue."

Zinedine Zidane has heaped praise on Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos. The previous Los Blancos manager's message followed Sergio Ramos affirming his exit from the club he joined as a 19-year-old.&nbsp;

Zinedine Zidane took to Instagram to send a salutary message to Sergio Ramos following an incredible vocation for both Real Madrid and Spain's public group. In his post, the Frenchman viewed Ramos as perhaps the best skipper in the game.

He wrote: "LEGEND. It was a great pleasure and honor to have you as a partner and player! A great Captain for history! Thank you so much for everything."

Zinedine Zidane was a Real Madrid player when Sergio Ramos joined Real Madrid back in 2005. Nonetheless, the pair partook in more achievement together during Zinedine Zidane's administrative vocation at Real Madrid. In his two spells as Los Blancos, manager, the Frenchman, and club skipper Sergio Ramos won three sequential Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, two UEFA Super Cups, and two FIFA Club World Cups.&nbsp;

It hasn't been the best beginning to the late spring for Real Madrid. The club has now lost two legends in no time. Zidane was the first to leave the Santiago Bernabeu in the wake of completing second in La Liga, behind city-rivals Atletico Madrid. Zidane has been supplanted by another returning chief in Italian Carlo Ancelotti for the 2021-22 season.&nbsp;

This week, the club bid farewell to their skipper Sergio Ramos. The 35-year-old safeguard couldn't go to a concurrence with the Real Madrid chain of command over another arrangement and now leaves the club as a free specialist in the wake of expenditure 16 seasons in the Spanish capital.&nbsp;

Real Madrid could likewise lose their other productive center-back this mid-year. Raphael Varane is as of now connected with a transition to Manchester United and has only one year staying on his agreement. Be that as it may, Real Madrid is supposedly set to propose a drawn-out bargain for Raphael Varane.

Roberto Mancini has said it took "the end of the world" for him to become&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;coach but his side now appear to be in a brave new world following a classy 3-0 win over Switzerland on Wednesday that propelled them into the Euro 2020 knockouts.

After laying down a marker with a stunning second-half display in their opener to beat Turkey 3-0,&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;matched that scoreline but produced an even more assured performance.

Manuel Locatelli was an unlikely figure to give&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;the lead in the first half when he started then finished off a sweeping attack down the right wing and then scored again after the break before striker Ciro Immobile adorned another magical night at the Stadio Olimpico by netting late on.

Locatelli, who had never scored twice in a game before, was the symbol of a side short on household names but bursting with talent which is making its mark at Euro 2020 after their miserable failure to qualify for the last World Cup.

Italy's limp playoff defeat to Sweden in November 2017 ensured they failed to reach a World Cup for the first time since 1958 and prompted much soul-searching, with coach Gian Piero Ventura painted as the scapegoat and booted out.

Mancini, a Premier League and Serie A winner with Manchester City and Inter Milan but who has often been criticised for being too defensive, was an unlikely figure to lead the revolution the country was crying out for, but he has proved an inspired choice.

Italy&nbsp;may have shed their old defence-first persona under previous coaches such as Antonio Conte, but Mancini has taken them to the next level, building a hyper-pressing team that suffocate opponents in their own half.

Mancini may have kept faith with seasoned gladiators such as Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, who have a combined age of 70 and were the only survivors of the defeat to Sweden who played against Switzerland, along with Immobile and Jorginho.

But his side also sparkles with players boasting courage and athleticism.

Their opening goal against Switzerland was made by a combination of skill, pace and quick-thinking from Domenico Berardi down the right flank, beating a Swiss defender by the byline before arrowing a low pass at the feet of Sassuolo team mate Locatelli, who had started the move.

Locatelli, who struck again with a deadly strike from outside the area, has performed so well that&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;have barely missed their one star name in Marco Verratti, who was forced to sit out both their opening games due to injury.

Berardi was a handful for the Swiss down the right wing all game while left back Leonardo Spinazzola, one of the best players against Turkey, was equally dangerous down the other flank, making&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;an unpredictable and terrifying side who became the first to book their place in the last 16.

No team will look forward to meeting them next.

Euro 2020: Dynamic Italy blazing a trail from ashes of World Cup failure

Captain Gareth Bale inspired a scintillating 2-0 victory for Wales over Turkey on Wednesday, giving the Dragons a big leap towards the European Championship knockout stages and reviving memories of their 2016 run to the semi-finals.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey missed two early chances, but made no mistake just before halftime when he chested down Bale's perfect ball over the defence to slot past the goalkeeper.

Wales could have doubled the lead at the hour mark when Bale was tripped by Zeki Celik and awarded a penalty, but the Welsh skipper skied his effort after a stuttering run up.

Wales were rewarded for their superiority throughout when they scored right at the death as a corner was played short and defender Connor Roberts was on hand to divert another Bale pass past goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir.

"We fought hard, we worked our socks off like we always do," Bale said.

The Group A win thrilled the few hundred Wales fans - outnumbered by Turkish supporters at Baku's Olympic Stadium - and many more at home who are dreaming of another Euros run like their first appearance in the tournament five years ago.

The surprise semi-finalists then, who next play&nbsp;Italy, now have four points, after drawing with Switzerland in their opener. Turkey, without points, take on the Swiss next.

Remarkably, Wales now have the best winning percentage in the Euros' history: 63% or five wins in eight games.

Wednesday's man-of-the-match Bale twice picked out Ramsey before his goal with superb defence-splitting passes. Cakır denied him from a tight angle in the sixth minute and then Ramsey thundered a shot over the bar in the 24th.

There was nothing lucky about the third time, though, with Bale floating a superbly-timed cross in the 42nd minute for Ramsey who brought the ball down perfectly to slot under Cakir.

TURKEY APOLOGETIC

With Turkish and Azeri Presidents Tayyip Erdogan and Ilham Aliyev in the stands, Turkey upped the pace after the break.

Captain Burak Yilmaz, who had missed a good chance in the first half, should have scored 10 minutes after the restart when he was unmarked in front of the Welsh goal but blazed a volley from three metres out well over the crossbar.

On the hour, Bale was brought down just inside the box to earn a spot kick. But the 31-year-old's effort flew high and wide to keep the Turks in the game.

"It's unfortunate but what he did show was character afterwards," said Wales manager Rob Page."Everybody makes mistakes. Ok, he missed it, but so what? He got man of the match!"

The disappointing Turks did force a good save from keeper Danny Ward when he punched a Merih Demiral header wide in the 87th minute. But they ran out of steam in stoppage time, allowing Bale to cut inside to feed Roberts for the second goal.

"I would like to apologise," Turkey defender Umut Meras said. "We wanted to win so hard tonight but that was not enough."

Turkey coach Senol Gunes lamented his team could not level the game after going behind but had warm words for Wales.

"We had many chances but couldn't find the equaliser. Wales played a good match. They were effective with their pivot striker and two wingers," he said.

The surprise semi-finalists then, who next play Italy, now have four points, after drawing with Switzerland in their opener. TURKEY APOLOGETIC With Turkish and Azeri Presidents Tayyip Erdogan and Ilham Aliyev in the stands, Turkey upped the pace after the break. He got man of the match!" The disappointing Turks did force a good save from keeper Danny Ward when he punched a Merih Demiral header wide in the 87th minute. But they ran out of steam in stoppage time, allowing Bale to cut inside to feed Roberts for the second goal. "I would like to apologise," Turkey defender Umut Meras said. "We wanted to win so hard tonight but that was not enough." Turkey coach Senol Gunes lamented his team could not level the game after going behind but had warm words for Wales. "We had many chances but couldn't find the equaliser. Wales played a good match. They were effective with their pivot striker and two wingers," he said.

Germany already have their backs to the wall at Euro 2020 after their opening loss to world champions France on Tuesday but they are confident there will be no repeat of their shock first-round exit at the last World Cup.

Defender Mats Hummels' first-half own goal gave France the 1-0 Group F win and leaves three-time champions Germany in need of points from their last two matches against holders Portugal on Saturday and Hungary next week, with both games in Munich again.

"This defeat is very painful, especially for me as my own goal decided the game," said Hummels, who was recalled to the squad for the tournament after having been dropped more than two years ago.

"We obviously know full well that there is room for improvement in our game. But you could see that we want to fight really hard in this tournament, that we want to excite you (the fans) and be successful."

The Germans certainly lacked fighting spirit in Russia three years ago when they were sensationally eliminated in the first round of the World Cup after losing their opening game to Mexico and managing just one win from three group games.

On Tuesday they were up against arguably the most complete team in the world and worked hard until the end to try to turn the game around and avoid a first-ever defeat in a Euro opener.

While they again struggled to carve out clear scoring chances they did deliver a solid second-half performance, earning some praise from German media.

The tournament format with three group matches means that one win could be enough to advance to the knockout stage and midfielder Toni Kroos said there was no point dwelling on the defeat.

"We have to look ahead now," he said. "Obviously when you lose the first game and you only have three then the pressure is always great."

How coach Joachim Loew's team handles this pressure against Portugal might decide their fate.

For midfielder Joshua Kimmich, Germany showed in the defeat to France that they can compete with the best.

"What we did was we showed that we can certainly keep up with top teams at this level," Kimmich said.

"France is one of the title contenders. In the next game, we have to show that we also are one of the title contenders."

Football: Germany already on the back foot after losing opener to France

&nbsp;Argentina superstar Lionel Messi scored a stunning freekick but Chile hit back to earn a 1-1 draw in the Copa America on Monday.

Messi's magical left foot gave dominant Argentina a deserved first half lead but Eduardo Vargas equalized in the second half after Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved veteran midfielder Arturo Vidal's penalty.

Despite Argentina's dominance, Messi lamented that "we weren't calm, we didn't have control of the ball."

His coach Lionel Scaloni saw things differently, though.

"We deserved to win but in the end we drew. In any case, it's only the start of a very tough tournament," said Scaloni.

Before the Group A game started in the Nelson Santos stadium in Rio de Janeiro, there was a light and effects tribute to Argentina legend Diego Maradona, who died in November aged 60, although the ground was empty due to coronavirus restrictions.

The first chance fell to Messi on eight minutes as Leandro Paredes picked out Nicolas Tagliafico on the left and the fullback nodded the ball down for his captain, who sent a volley wide.

Minutes later, Giovani Lo Celso crossed from the left but a sliding Lautaro Martinez could only spoon the ball over the bar from inside the six-yard box.

Argentina were in total command and Lo Celso picked out Nicolas Gonzalez to shoot from 20 yards but goalkeeper Claudio Bravo got down well to his right to tip the ball around the post.

From Messi's corner Gonzalez headed over the bar and moments later he was released by Lo Celos but shot straight at Bravo.

It would be a frustrating night for Gonzalez.

Argentina got the goal their domination deserved on 33 minutes, and inevitably it was Messi who scored, curling a free-kick from 25 yards out just beyond Bravo's dive.

They should have had a second soon afterwards but teed up by Gonzalo Montiel 10 yards out, Martinez screwed his shot horribly wide.

"I would be worried if the team wasn't creating chances. The important thing is we are, we're getting lots of players in the box. And it will go in," said Scaloni.

<h2>- 'Defiant' Chileans -</h2>

&nbsp;

Chile started the second half with more intent and Erick Pulgar played Vargas into the area but his shot on the stretch was saved by Martinez.

However, Vidal stormed in to try to fire home the rebound and was caught by Tagliafico as he shot.

Referee Wilmar Roldan consulted VAR and then awarded a penalty.

Martinez tipped Vidal's effort onto the crossbar but Vargas was quickest to the ball to head home the equalizer.

Argentina were soon back on the attack but Chile centre-back Gary Medel blocked a volley from Gonzalez, who later headed over from a Messi free-kick.

Twenty minutes from time, Messi created space in the box but Bravo was down well to save his low shot.

Gonzalez's night to forget would get worse 10 minutes from time when he ran onto a perfect chipped pass from Messi but headed over from just seven yards out when it looked easier to score.

It was his last involvement as he was substituted before Bravo took the goalkick.

Argentina kept pushing but Messi headed over the bar in injury time as Chile held on for a point.

"This team didn't want to be beaten, even though they didn't play well. This group of players are defiant," said Chile coach Martin Lasarte.

Angel Romero scored twice as Paraguay bounced back to beat 10-man Bolivia 3-1 in Goiania and top Group A.

Erwin Saavedra gave Bolivia the lead from the penalty spot on 10 minutes after a long VAR review.

Paraguay dominated throughout but the game changed deep into first half stoppage time when Bolivia's Jaume Cuellar was sent off for a second booking.

Alejandro Romero Gamarra restored parity just past the hour mark and Romero put Paraguay in front three minutes later.

Romero sealed the win 10 minutes from time as Paraguay enjoyed almost 80 percent possession and had more than 30 shots.

The Copa was due to take place last year but was delayed by 12 months due to the coronavirus.

It was also switched from original hosts Argentina and Colombia to Brazil at the 11th hour due to the pandemic situation in the former and social unrest in the latter.

Brazil's health ministry issued a statement on Monday saying 31 members of the playing delegations, including players and staff, tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday, without giving further details.

Germany on Monday refused to accept the underdog tag in their Euro 2020 Group F opener against world champions France on Tuesday, saying they were out to win the game and payback fans for a disappointing World Cup campaign three years ago.

The Germans will play their group matches in Munich and captain Manuel Neuer said their shock 2018 World Cup first-round exit meant they had to make amends in front of a 14,000 home crowd.

With 2014 world champions Thomas Mueller and Mats Hummels back in the squad after more than two years, Germany are going into the tournament with a largely untested team after an overhaul in 2019 was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic and a string of bad results.

The three-time European champions are not among the title favorites this time, unlike France.

"We know France has been successful in the past years," Neuer said. "But we are still a very good team, uncomfortable to play against.

"We have respect for them but we don't see ourselves as the underdogs. We want to win the game here in Munich," he said.

Germany coach Joachim Loew, in his final tournament before stepping down after 15 years in charge, is set to include Leon Goretzka in his squad, with the midfielder having recovered from injury and having trained several times with the team.

Midfielder Jonas Hofmann is not expected to feature.

"What will be important tomorrow is to do what the team has shown in the past 14 days," he said. "That we are brimming with ambition and confidence, that we will go into the one-on-ones and we will throw everything into this game."

Germany also plays European champions Portugal before taking on Hungary in their last group game.

UEFA has opened an investigation into Austria forward Marko Arnautovic's goal celebration in their opening match of the Euros against North Macedonia, European soccer's governing body said on Tuesday.

North Macedonia urged UEFA to look into Arnautovic's reaction after he scored in the 89th minute to complete Austria's 3-1 win on Sunday.

Second-half substitute Arnautovic appeared furious as he celebrated his late goal before captain David Alaba stepped in to restrain him.

"An Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct an investigation regarding the incident involving the player Marko Arnautovic that occurred during the 2020 European Championship group-stage match between the national teams of Austria and North Macedonia on 13 June 2021," UEFA said in a statement.

Arnautovic, who has Serbian background, apologized on Monday for his reaction towards North Macedonia fans but denied he had used racist language towards them.

Serbia does not recognize the independence of its former province Kosovo.

North Macedonia's soccer governing body (FFM) said that Arnautovic's remarks were aimed at North Macedonia's Gjanni Alioski, who has Albanian roots.

Alioski said his arguments with Arnautovic during the match were nothing out of the ordinary but he took exception to the Austrian forward's reaction after the goal.

"We had some arguments during the game and I think it’s a normal thing," Allioski told a news conference on Tuesday. "The best thing is that after the game we spoke and shook hands.

"The problem is that after he scored he said something to me and UEFA has the videos. It's difficult for me to repeat what he said."

The FFM said it strongly condemns the "nationalistic outburst" of Arnautovic.

"We are always against nationalism, discrimination, and all other forms of insults and outbursts that are not in the spirit of&nbsp;football&nbsp;and values that we all stand together."&nbsp;

"We will always stand up and defend the interests and dignity of Macedonian national players wherever they perform."

"We are always against nationalism, discrimination, and all other forms of insults and outbursts that are not in the spirit of football and values that we all stand together." "We will always stand up and defend the interests and dignity of Macedonian national players wherever they perform."

Cristiano Ronaldo was discontent with Euro 2020 coordinators for keeping two Coca-Cola bottles in the press conference room. The American drink organization is the sponsor of Euro 2020.&nbsp;

In any case, after seeing the Coca-Cola bottles before him in the press conference room, Cristiano Ronaldo immediately removed the bottles from the camera and lifted a bottle of water, and said "agua" (water), asking individuals to drink water over such sweet beverages.&nbsp;

This would come as a gigantic negative PR to Euro 2020 just as Coca-Cola. The refreshment goliaths are the authority supporters of the competition yet with Ronaldo contradicting the beverage in broad daylight, Euro 2020 coordinators may need to reevaluate their situating of the containers.&nbsp;

With Ronaldo presently contradicting Coca-Cola before a world crowd at Euro 2020, the organization should view things all the more appropriately in advertising its image in football competitions.&nbsp;

Ronaldo is because of lead his Portugal side against Hungary in their initial game at Euro 2020. Portugal have been brought into the "Group of death" close by ruling World Cup champs France and Germany. Ronaldo realizes that success against Hungary will be significant if Portugal needs to fit the bill for the knockout rounds of Euro 2020.

England manager Gareth Southgate said his players should not be "football&nbsp;snobs" and can feel comfortable about hitting long balls out of defense if the opposition is pressing high up the pitch at the European Championship.

England kicked off their Euro campaign with a 1-0 win over Croatia on Sunday and the game featured a first-half disagreement between defender John Stones and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Stones wanted to build from the back, while Pickford preferred to play it long towards forward Harry Kane.

"I think they were just deciding (what to do)," Southgate said after Sunday's win. "We give them possible patterns depending on how the opposition are pressing.

"There was a spell where we went long and we just talked about that at halftime. We didn't want to do that every time. But there are moments to go longer. We've got a centre forward (in Kane) who wins more (than) his share of the ball.

"And we shouldn't be&nbsp;football&nbsp;snobs. It's great to play out from the back and get to the halfway line in control of the ball, but it’s just as effective to go to the centre forward and be in control of the ball and be able to play from there."

Spain's new team struggled with the familiar problems on Monday as a string of missed chances allowed Sweden to hang on for a goalless draw in their Euro 2020 opener in Seville.&nbsp;

Alvaro Morata wasted the best opportunity of a dominant first half, in which Spain churned out 419 passes, the most of any team on record in the opening 45 minutes of a European Championship fixture.&nbsp;

Morata was whistled by his own fans when substituted with 25 minutes left, with Luis Enrique now facing questions over his decision to leave out Gerard Moreno, the Villarreal striker who scored 23 goals last season.

Spain lost their rhythm after the interval and Sweden might even have won it, the excellent Alexander Isak hitting the post before his strike partner Marcus Berg missed a sitter from two yards out.&nbsp;

"They decided to defend, defend and defend. It was a very unfair result," said Luis Enrique, who also complained about the pitch. "The players struggled to control the ball," he said.

A goalless draw leaves Spain playing catch-up in Group E after Slovakia earlier pulled off a shock 2-1 victory over Poland, raising the stakes for the game between Spain and Poland on Saturday, when a loser would be left struggling to qualify.&nbsp;

Another failure to convert possession into chances was reminiscent of recent disappointments for Spain, most notably when they were frustrated by Russia at the 2018 World Cup, before going out on penalties.&nbsp;

In the wake of that defeat, Luis Enrique was tasked with launching a new era as coach, a project that involved promoting a fresh crop of players but also a more direct, penetrative style.&nbsp;

His team were impressive in the first half, a far cry from some of the ponderous passing displays that made Spain look out of date in recent major tournaments. &nbsp;

But the second half drifted, perhaps through a lack of confidence or even sharpness, given the team were unable to train together for most of last week, separated according to protocol after Sergio Busquets, still absent, and Diego Llorente tested positive for Covid-19.&nbsp;

Sweden coach Janne Andersson, meanwhile, promised on Sunday his team would "run like hell" and they not only defended resolutely but carved out arguably the two best chances of the match.&nbsp;

<h2>- Ibrahimovic's heir apparent Isak impresses -</h2>

Isak, the 21-year-old, who scored 17 goals for Real Sociedad last season, showed why he is one of the most rated young strikers in Europe and Spain would have been relieved when Andersson took him off with 20 minutes left.&nbsp;

"It wasn't raining chances even though they had a lot of possession," said Andersson. "We could have lost the game, we could also have won it."

Spain's new team struggled with the familiar problems on Monday as a string of missed chances allowed Sweden to hang on for a goalless draw in their Euro 2020 opener in Seville.

Spain's new team struggled with the familiar problems on Monday as a string of missed chances allowed Sweden to hang on for a goalless draw in their Euro 2020 opener in Seville. Alvaro Morata wasted the best opportunity of a dominant first half, in which Spain churned out 419 passes, the most of any team on record in the opening 45 minutes of a European Championship fixture. Morata was whistled by his own fans when substituted with 25 minutes left, with Luis Enrique now facing questions over his decision to leave out Gerard Moreno, the Villarreal striker who scored 23 goals last season. Spain lost their rhythm after the interval and Sweden might even have won it, the excellent Alexander Isak hitting the post before his strike partner Marcus Berg missed a sitter from two yards out. "They decided to defend, defend and defend. It was a very unfair result," said Luis Enrique, who also complained about the pitch. "The players struggled to control the ball," he said. A goalless draw leaves Spain playing catch-up in Group E after Slovakia earlier pulled off a shock 2-1 victory over Poland, raising the stakes for the game between Spain and Poland on Saturday, when a loser would be left struggling to qualify. Another failure to convert possession into chances was reminiscent of recent disappointments for Spain, most notably when they were frustrated by Russia at the 2018 World Cup, before going out on penalties. In the wake of that defeat, Luis Enrique was tasked with launching a new era as coach, a project that involved promoting a fresh crop of players but also a more direct, penetrative style. His team were impressive in the first half, a far cry from some of the ponderous passing displays that made Spain look out of date in recent major tournaments. But the second half drifted, perhaps through a lack of confidence or even sharpness, given the team were unable to train together for most of last week, separated according to protocol after Sergio Busquets, still absent, and Diego Llorente tested positive for Covid-19. Sweden coach Janne Andersson, meanwhile, promised on Sunday his team would "run like hell" and they not only defended resolutely but carved out arguably the two best chances of the match. - Ibrahimovic's heir apparent Isak impresses - Isak, the 21-year-old, who scored 17 goals for Real Sociedad last season, showed why he is one of the most rated young strikers in Europe and Spain would have been relieved when Andersson took him off with 20 minutes left. "It wasn't raining chances even though they had a lot of possession," said Andersson. "We could have lost the game, we could also have won it." Premier League clubs reported a cumulative pre-tax loss of almost £1 billion ($1.4 billion) for the coronavirus-hit 2019-20 season, according to figures from finance company Deloitte.

Fans were locked out of English top-flight stadiums in the latter stages of the 2019-20 campaign because of the pandemic and only returned on a limited basis towards the end of the 2020-21 season.

The lack of spectators combined with a rebate paid to television broadcasters cut revenue by about 13 per cent.

A cumulative pre-tax loss of almost £1 billion was also the largest in Premier League history and almost five times the previous season's £200 million figure.

Although the losses were significant, the 20 Premier League clubs still made a combined £4.5 billion.

"The decrease in revenue in the 2019-20 season is, unsurprisingly, down to the global economic and social disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and will continue to have a heavy impact on the 2020-21 season's financial results when available," Dan Jones of Deloitte's sports business group said.&nbsp;

"The absence of fans, postponement of matches and rebates to broadcasters had a significant impact on the revenue clubs have been able to generate.

"The full financial impact of the pandemic on the Premier League will depend on the timing of the return of fans to stadia in significant numbers and the ability of clubs to maintain and develop their commercial relationships, in particular at a time when many other industries are suffering.

"Matchday operations are a cornerstone of a club's business model and fans' absence will be more fully reflected in the financial results of the 2020-21 financial year.

"Once fans are able to return in full, hopefully during the 2021/22 season, Premier League clubs have the potential to again return to record revenue levels."

The renewal of the league's broadcasting deals will contribute to that, but, in the meantime, the proportion of club revenue that went to paying player wages jumped to 72 per cent in 2019-20.

"With wages always representing the largest cost for football clubs we will watch with interest in years to come to understand whether this financial shock will come to be seen as having caused a change in approach and greater control over wage expenditure," Deloitte's Tim Bridge said.

Football: Premier League clubs suffer losses of nearly $1.4 bn during pandemic

Kylian Mbappe admitted he was "affected" by public comments perceived as criticism from fellow forward Olivier Giroud following a friendly against Bulgaria, but insisted he did not want it to become a distraction for France at Euro 2020.

Tensions surfaced between the two players after Chelsea striker Giroud complained about not receiving the ball often enough during Tuesday's 3-0 win over Bulgaria, in which he scored twice.

"I was a bit affected by that but we're not going to make a big story about it," Mbappe told reporters Sunday at the national training centre at Clairefontaine.

"We're here to represent France and the national team represents the most important thing. We have a big competition and these trivial things aren't going to disrupt our preparation."

Mbappe, the leading scorer in Ligue 1 last season with 27 goals, revealed he had wanted to address the matter earlier in the week but was dissuaded from doing so by France coach Didier Deschamps.

"I wanted to come Thursday (to the press conference) to explain myself. After speaking with the coach, it wasn't the best moment," said the 22-year-old.

"He decided the best time was today, so I did as I was told and came today."

The Paris Saint-Germain star claimed it wasn't what Giroud said that bothered him, but the public nature of his remarks.

"I saw him in the dressing room, I went to congratulate him on his goals. He didn't say anything to me and then I learned about it in the media.

"I would have preferred that he come and even be much more scathing about it. In the dressing room if I have something to say to someone I will tell them and it stays there, I don't have a problem."

But Mbappe sought to draw a line under the brewing feud ahead of France's tournament opener against Germany in Munich on Tuesday.

"I don't want that to disturb the team. We will already have very difficult tests, we don't need to make things even harder."

Giroud, 34, is France's second highest scorer of all time, his 46 goals second only to Thierry Henry (51).

The world champions have a wealth of attacking options though with the return of Karim Benzema to the squad following a five-and-a-half year exile, and Antoine Griezmann also in the squad.

Les Bleus take on Hungary in Budapest in their second match in Group F and then face defending champions Portugal at the Puskas Arena on June 19 in a repeat of the 2016 final.

Football: Mbappe 'affected' by Giroud criticism but keen to move on

Star forward Neymar netted a penalty and created a second as hosts Brazil eased to a 3-0 victory over a coronavirus-depleted Venezuela on Sunday in the opening match of the 2021 Copa America.

Centre-back Marquinhos opened the scored midway through the first half and Gabriel Barbosa sealed the Group B win a minute from time.

In a tournament already delayed a year and moved from its original hosts Argentina and Colombia due to the pandemic, it was fitting that the coronavirus should take centre-stage right up to the tournament kick-off.

Played in front of an empty Mane Garrincha stadium in Brasilia due to Covid-19 restrictions, Brazil made light of the continent's minnows, who arrived with a makeshift side missing eight players ruled out after testing positive for coronavirus the day before.

Venezuela called up 15 emergency replacements but could still only name seven out of a possible 12 substitutes due to a lack of available players.

"It's not just being without key players, we didn't have time to prepare better for this team," complained Venezuela's Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro.

The game went ahead and, predictably, reigning champions Brazil were well on top.

"The three points are important. We had to start well regardless of our rivals having players out," said Brazil captain Casemiro.

Following a minute's silence to remember Covid victims, Richarlison was denied from close range by Venezuela's goalkeeper Joel Graterol early on before the forward flicked a header wide form a corner.

Centre-back Eder Militao was also off target with a header while Graterol did well to hold a Danilo volley from distance.

Venezuela produced little going forward but Jose Martinez&nbsp;did have the Brazil defence back-pedalling with a dangerous burst before winning a corner that came to nothing.

Brazil took the lead on 23 minutes when Richarlison flicked on a Neymar corner that deflected into Marquinhos's path inside the six-yard box, allowing the centre-back to bundle home.

Richarlison had a goal ruled out for offside while Neymar incredibly fired wide from 12 yards out as Brazil threatened to put the game to bed before half-time.

<h2>- Neymar turns creator -</h2>

It was more of the same after the break as substitute Alex Sandro from distance and Richarlison with a header both shot over the bar.

Neymar somehow failed to turn home a cross-cum-shot from Gabriel Jesus from three yards out but on 64 minutes he doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

Yohan Cumana clumsily brought down Danilo in the box and Neymar sent Graterol the wrong way from 12 yards.

The hosts took their foot off the gas but Neymar kept probing and was denied a second by Graterol following a mazy run and shot from inside the box.

Neymar then created the third, rounding Graterol before crossing for Gabriel Barbosa to chest home from barely a yard out.

"He's developed the ability to create. Right foot, left foot, he's become an unpredictable player," Brazil coach Tite enthused about Neymar.

Edwin Cardona scored the only goal of the game as Colombia held on under second half pressure to begin their Group B campaign with a 1-0 win over Ecuador -- who thrashed them 6-1 the last time the sides met in a World Cup qualifier in November.

Colombia's goal was a thing of beauty with Cardona taking a short free-kick to Juan Cuadrado, who chipped the ball into the box for Miguel Borja to head down into the path of Cardona to volley home.

It was initially disallowed for offside but a VAR review showed that while three Colombian players were beyond the defensive line, Cardona and Borja were onside.

Ecuador came close to a second half equalizer through Pervis Estupinan but Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina brilliantly tipped his free-kick around the post.

Ronaldo said on &nbsp;Monday he was looking forward to beginning Euro 2020 in front of a packed Puskas Arena against Hungary as he prepares to lead defending champions Portugal in their search for a repeat triumph.

At 36 years old Ronaldo is set take the field in front of 68,000 fans in the Hungarian capital on Tuesday in what should be Portugal's simplest match in a tough Group F alongside Germany and world champions France.

"It's perfect. I wish every single venue could host a full house. It's great for viewers and players, but sadly it's not up to us to decide," said Ronaldo.

"We know the pandemic has its influence. I wish we could always play before a full house."

Portugal have lost Joao Cancelo from their squad to Covid-19 after the Manchester City right-back tested positive for the virus on Sunday, but Ronaldo says the team are not worrying about the pandemic.

"We don't talk about Covid because we're tired of it. It's a sad situation but we're focused... Nothing will shake us... We're just focused on playing.

"I think the team is ready, physically and emotionally. The players are young but that doesn't stop us from dreaming. I know all the players are ready."

The Portugal captain is set to become the first person to play in at least one match at five European Championships, and also has another record in sight.

He needs just five more goals to equal Iranian Ali Daei's all-time mark of 109 international goals, a feasible target at this summer's tournament should Portugal go deep.

"I'm not the same player I was 18 years ago, 10 years ago, five years ago... you keep adjusting," said Ronaldo.&nbsp;

"I'm more mature, if a player wants to play for many years he needs to learn how to adapt. From 18 to 36 years old I've learned to adjust and adapt, and I've always been able to win personally and collectively."

A win over the Magyars would go a long way to ensuring Portugal qualify for the next round at least as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams as coach Fernando Santos targets two Euro titles in a row with a talented squad.

"Right now we think we have what it takes to win the cup," said Santos.

"There are very good opponents, seven or eight teams are playing to take the trophy home, and there are dark horses who also think they have a chance. The only difference is that we hold the title."

Football: Argentina were never too dependent on me, says Lionel Messi

A moment of world-class quality from David Alaba earned Austria the breakthrough they had toiled so hard to find against North Macedonia on Sunday, sending Franco Foda’s side on their way to a first-ever European Championship win.

Alaba’s cross from the left-wing curled invitingly behind the Macedonian defence and left substitute Michael Gregoritsch with a simple finish.

It came 78 minutes into a scrappy, hard-fought and often fiery encounter with the lowest-ranked team at Euro 2020, who were making their major tournament debut.

Austria eventually got a third in the 90th minute through Marko Arnautovic, but Foda’s side had to dig deep for the three points and questions will undoubtedly now be raised again about Alaba’s best role.

The 28-year-old, who recently joined Real Madrid on a free transfer after 13 trophy-laden years with Bayern Munich, is renowned for his versatility.

Even so, it came as something of a surprise to see Austria’s star player line up in the centre of a back three for their opening game.

It was up to Marcel Sabitzer to provide the craft necessary to break down the resilient debutants early on.

The playmaker showed some frustration inside the opening 15 minutes, throwing his arms in the air at the lack of options in front of him, but it was the RB Leipzig man’s wonderful delivery that led to Stefan Lainer’s volleyed opener.

But a calamitous defensive mix-up handed North Macedonia their historic first major tournament goal through 37-year-old Goran Pandev, putting the impetus back on Austria to unlock the defence once more.

As Sabitzer’s influence waned and the game reached the final 15 minutes, Alaba took matters into his own hands and began to venture forward more.

He did not need long to make an impact - his moment of magic was produced with 12 minutes remaining and ultimately won the game for Foda’s side.

It was a clear sign of Alaba’s ability to threaten in the final third, an area of the pitch he was the furthest from of all Austria’s outfield players for most of the game.

The brilliant assist may well lead to calls for him to be deployed in midfield for their remaining Group C games against Ukraine and the Netherlands.

Questions over Alaba’s role aside, there were many positives for Austria.

Foda’s side had one win in six games and had not scored for over 300 minutes leading up to the tournament.

Therefore, registering their first Euros victory and scoring three times in the process will relieve some pressure as they aim for a place in the last-16.

Football: David Alaba quality bails out Austria but raises questions about his best role

Late goals from substitutes Michael Gregoritsch and Marko Arnautovic gave Austria a convincing 3-1 victory over European Championship debutants North Macedonia in their opening Group C clash on Sunday as they earned their first tournament victory in 31 years.

Gregoritsch prodded home David Alaba's cross in the 78th minute before Arnautovic struck in the 89th, as Austria earned the first win at the Euros at their seventh attempt and their first victory at a major tournament since the 1990 World Cup.

"We deserved to win today," Austria coach Franco Foda said. "The players made history today. You could feel from the first minute that they wanted to win it."

"The substitutions had an effect and brought new impulse. They were important and the team did everything to win it."

"I am very satisfied. We started well and were aggressive. Then they scored through a momentary lapse of concentration from us," Foda said.

"After the break, we wanted to increase our passing speed. We were more mobile. We did it really well."

The Austrians, who started unusually with Alaba in central defence, had possession and circulated the ball well but struggled to break through until Marcel Sabitzer floated a perfectly-timed cross to the far post.

Stefan Lainer latched on to it, leaping into the air to beat keeper Stole Dimitrievski from a tight angle.

The North Macedonians, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, drew level with their first chance of the game 10 minutes later when defender Martin Hinteregger's clearance first bounced off the back of Sabitzer and keeper Daniel Bachmann then let the ball slip for captain Goran Pandev to slot in.

That was his country's first-ever goal in a major tournament and the forward, who has 38 goals in 120 appearances, also became the second-oldest player to score at the Euro, after Austria's Ivica Vastic, who was 38 back in 2008.

Pandev had another chance just past the hour after Boban Nikolov had failed to beat Bachmann as Austria continued to struggle up front and hoped this would not be another missed opportunity.

Foda was forced to switch to a formation with two strikers, bringing on forwards Arnautovic and Gregoritsch and the move paid off and moving Alaba into a midfield role.

Gregoritsch timed his run to perfection to tap in Alaba's cross before keeper Risto Jankov got his hands on the ball.

Arnautovic then pounced on a defensive mistake to round the keeper and seal the Austrians' first tournament win in 31 years.

Christian Eriksen's agent said the player is undergoing detailed examinations after the Denmark international collapsed with a cardiac arrest during his side's Euro 2020 opening match against Finland on Saturday.

"We all want to understand what happened to him and he wants to as well. The doctors are doing some detailed examinations, it will take time," Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport on Monday cited Eriksen's agent Martin Schoots as saying.

"Christian does not give up. He and his family want to send everyone their thanks."

"We spoke this morning (Sunday). He was joking around and in good spirits, he was doing well," he added.

The Group B game was halted and eventually restarted an hour and 45 minutes later, Finland winning 1-0.

The incident raises questions about the workload players have been subjected to. Eriksen was playing in his 66th competitive game in the one year since soccer restarted following a shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The messages of support for Eriksen have come pouring in, from within the game and beyond, something that Schoots said has helped cheer up the Dane.

"He was happy because he understood how much love he has around him," Schoots added. "He received messages from all over the world.

"He was particularly struck by those from the world of Inter Milan; not just from his teammates, who he heard from through texts, but also the fans.

"Half the world has contacted us, everyone is worried. Now he just needs to rest. His wife and parents are with him. But in any case he wants to support his teammates against Belgium."

Denmark's team doctor said Sunday there was still "no explanation" for why midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed during his country's&nbsp;opening Euro 2020 game against Finland, but confirmed he had suffered a cardiac arrest.

"He was gone, and we did cardiac resuscitation," team doctor Morten Boesen told a press conference.

"How close were we? I don't know. We got him back after one defib (defibrillation), so that's quite fast," Boesen added.

However, the physician also said they had yet to discover that cause of the 29-year-old's heart attack.

"There's no explanation so far," Boesen said, adding that all tests done so far on the player, who is still in hospital, have come back fine.

"That is also one of the reasons that he is still in the hospital," the physician added.

The Inter Milan star suddenly collapsed in the 43rd minute of Denmark's Group B game against Finland on Saturday, laying motionless as medical personnel administered CPR.

He laid on the field for about 15 minutes before being carried off the pitch and rushed to hospital.

The game was temporarily suspended awaiting updates on Eriksen's health, but resumed later in the evening after reports filtered through that the player was in a stable condition and awake. It ended in a 1-0 win for debutants Finland.

Players in the Danish team were given the option to continue the game or postpone it, but on Sunday head coach Kasper Hjulmand said he regretted the decision.

"I honestly don't think that we should have been on the pitch again," Hjulmand told reporters.

Hjulmand added that Eriksen had told him he wished for the team to carry on playing in the tournament.

"Christian wishes that we should continue playing, so we will do that. We want to play for Christian," Hjulmand said.

Raheem Sterling said he knew he would break his duck for England in major tournaments when given the chance at Wembley after netting the winner in a 1-0 victory over Croatia on Sunday.

Sterling grew up in the shadow of Wembley and justified Gareth Southgate's decision to keep faith with him by scoring the only goal just before the hour.

"I always said if I played at Wembley in a major tournament, I'm scoring. I had to score in my back garden and delighted to do that," he told the BBC.

Sterling's strike ensured England won their opening game at a European Championship for the first time in 10 attempts and ended his run of not scoring in 12 appearances across three previous tournaments.

The 26-year-old's place had been under threat from Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford after a disappointing end of the season with Manchester City, but he has now scored 11 times in his last 15 international appearances.

"I'm so pleased for Raheem, he's had this hex in the tournaments. I felt he was dangerous all day. Right from the start he looked a threat," said England manager Southgate.

"His goalscoring record suggests we should have faith with him. He was motivated for it but we are going to need everybody, we are going to need that depth, those attacking players, we'll need those guys through the tournament."

Sterling was sidelined for the majority of Manchester City's run to their first Champions League final by the emergence of his club and international teammate Phil Foden.

The pair started together as England gained revenge for their 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia, and both did enough to suggest they should retain their place against Scotland on Friday.

"There are a lot of different reasons why I haven't scored with my club, but that's irrelevant now, I'm here with my country now," added Sterling.

"It's been a long season for me, but I couldn't wait to get here."

After finally ending the wait to win an opening game at the Euro, Southgate is keen to keep the momentum going.

"This is a tough group with different sorts of challenges," he added. "We're pleased about today, you want a good start because it takes some of the tension out of the preparation of the next game, but we still need some points to qualify."
