On Sunday (December 18), Argentina and France locked horns in one of the greatest World Cup finals. After a riveting group stage, Round of 16, quarters and semi-finals, the FIFA World Cup 2022 edition's finale saw the defending champions France take on Lionel Messi's Argentina at the Lusail Stadium, Qatar. The momentum shifted from one side to another and the regular and extra time ended with nothing separating the two nations, with the scoreline reading 3-3. In the penalty shootout, Messi & Co. emerged on top, 4-2, to win their first-ever World Cup in 36 years (after 1986) as the Argentine captain's WC run ended in a dream fashion.

Following the epic finale, reactions have been pouring in from all corners. From the likes of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Sachin Tendulkar, Brazil legend Pele, tennis sensation Andy Murray, Neymar and many others, wishes have been flowing in for the victorious Argentine team. Here are some of the reactions:

Having reached the final in style, beating the 2018 edition's runners-up Croatia 3-0, Messi & Co. started off with a bang and were leading 2-0 till the 80th minute before France rode on Kylian Mbappe's twin strikes and levelled the scores to push the game to the extra time.

In the extra time, Argentina was once again ahead by 3-2, with Messi striking for the second time in the contest before Mbappe's hat-trick pushed the game to the penalty shootout where Argentina ended on top (4-2). After the game, wishes have been pouring in from all corners for Argentina captain Messi. He had already revealed, post the Croatia win, that the Qatar final will be his last World Cup appearance and, hence, he ended his run in the mega event on a glorious note. Hence, many legends have joined in to wish the 35-year-old Messi.

Roger Federer, who retired from tennis early this year, took to his official Instagram handle and wrote, "Fairytale stuff Argentina! Time and time again you @leomessi have redefined greatness. It’s a privilege to watch you. Congrats Leo & Special and historic," along with sharing a photo of Messi's famous World Cup trophy kiss. Here's the post:

'Check back with me in 7 years' - Lionel Messi's fan's 2015 prediction goes viral after Argentina win FIFA WC

France and Argentina produced a FIFA World Cup final which will be remembered for a long time. On Sunday evening (December 18), Lionel Messi-led Argentina locked horns with defending champions and the Kylian Mbappe-starrer France at the Lusail Stadium, Qatar in front of a huge crowd. While Argentina enjoyed a 2-0 lead till the 80th minute, the momentum shifted towards France with Mbappe's twin strikes taking the game to the extra time.

At 2-2 after the end of regulation time, Messi found the back of the net in the 108th minute only for Mbappe to level the scores, at 3-3, in the 118th minute and take the game to the penalties. In the shootouts, Argentina held their nerves and took the game 4-2 to win their first-ever World Cup title after 1986. Post the dramatic loss, Mbappe -- who also scored in the shootout -- was left heartbroken and inconsolable. After the game, French president Emmanuel Macron won hearts as he was seen consoling the 23-year-old star footballer. Here's the video:

France make a comeback

After the two goals, Deschamps was forced to make quick substitutions around the 40-minute mark as Giroud and Dembele were hooked and replaced by Marcus Thuram and last-match goalscorer Randal Kolo Muani.

With Argentina firmly in the driving seat, Scaloni opted for defensive changes in the second half as Di Maria was replaced by Acuna. And that turned the game on its head. France jumped to life in the 80th minute when Kolo Muani drove at full tilt in the opposition box and got Otamendi to foul him.

Mbappe converted from the spot and nearly 97 seconds later, rifled a half-volley past Martinez to bring France right back into the competition.

The game ended level after 90 minutes and the first quarter of extra time went without much development. However, in the second half of the extra time, Messi produced another moment of brilliance to beat Lloris and bring Argentina to the cusp.

Just when it looked like France were dead and buried, Mbappe, the 23-year-old youngster brought another special trick from his drawer and managed to stun the full-house Argentine crowd.

Scaloni's tactical masterclass

The French camp had a tumultuous 48 hours leading into the World Cup final. A serious bout of illness and minor injuries meant that several players were having a race against time to get fit for, arguably, the biggest game of their careers.

Deschamps decided to make two changes to the lineup from the one that played against Croatia. Defender Dayot Upamecaon and midfielder Adrien Rabiot replaced Ibrahima Konate and Youssouf Fofana.

As for Argentina, Scalnoi brought his big match player Ángel Di María in place of Leandro Parades as the only change. With Ousmane Demble not tracking back and Tchoumaeni expected to be loitering high up the pitch, Scaloni's plan was to overload the left side with Mac Allister and Di Maria teaming up.

The ploy worked like a charm as Di Maria, along with Messi remained one of the most influential players on the field for the men in blue-and-white stripes.

A fairytale comes to draw

The WC triumph by Messi and his men is all the more memorable because it comes in the backdrop of the start they had to endure. Argentina were flattened by Saudi Arabia in the opening league game and many believed that it was the end of the road for Messi.

“It’s a very hard blow for everyone, we didn’t expect to start like this. Things happen for a reason. We should prepare for what’s coming; we have to win, and it depends on us," said Messi after the game.

However, after the Argentine victory, the World Cup has come to its fitting culmination after the grand spectacle began 26 days ago. It may have passed in a blink of an eye but has given fans across the world, memories, to be cherished for a lifetime.

FIFA World Cup final Live Streaming Online: ARG vs FRA - On Sunday (December 15), France will take on Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2022 final. After a riveting group stage, which saw plenty of upsets, Round of 16 and enthralling quarterfinals, the action has moved to the summit clash which will see two modern-day greats such as Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe square off as their respective sides will clash for the mega title. In WC head-to-head battles, Argentina enjoy a 2-1 lead over France in three matches but the last face-off saw Kylian Mbappe blitz guide his side to a 4-3 win in the 2018 edition. Overall, Argentina holds the edge over France with six wins, three defeats and an equal number of games ending in a draw. Nonetheless, both sides will be wary of the fact that anything can happen during the finale and past records won't matter. Talking about both sides' run in the ongoing edition, Argentina started off on a disastrous note with a loss in their opening tie, versus Saudi Arabia. Since then, they have been on a winning spree.
FIFA World Cup Final 2022:The ongoing World Cup in Qatar hasn't been short on controversies. Referees and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) have been at the receiving end of criticism from players and fans alike. However, amid the gloom, there is one heartening story of a referee that is set to register his name in the history books.

Szymon Marciniak will be the first referee in the final between France and Argentina at the Lusail Stadium on Today (Sunday December 18). The 41-old-year referee, hailing from Poland will become the first Polish person to officiate a final of the FIFA World Cup.

Marciniak finding himself at the centre of the biggest match of the sport is something that he himself could not have imagined a year ago. The Polish referee was forced to step away from officiating duties after being diagnosed with Tachycardia -- a heart condition where the heart rate exceeds the normal resting rate.

"I had a very difficult time for the last year-and-a-half. I had Tachycardia - it's a heart illness. In the beginning, it was very difficult," Marciniak was quoted as saying by Reuters.

"I missed the UEFA European Championship, it was a terrible feeling. Now, life gives back to me and I cannot even stop smiling because it's a great feeling."

Marciniak started his career in 2009 in Poland's top-flight tournament. Four years later, he joined FIFA's official list of referees. He was also involved in the 2018 World Cup held in Russia and is famously known for handing German player Jerome Boateng a red card.

Marciniak will be joined by assistants Pawel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz who also happen to be Polish. As for VAR, Tomasz Kwiatkowski will man the consoles with Ismail Elfath as the fourth official.

What is the controversy around referees?

Referees at the Qatar World Cup 2022 have had to endure a tough time ever since the knockout phase began. It all started during the highly physical quarterfinal match between Netherlands and Argentina where Lionel Messi and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez slammed referees.

"I don’t want to speak about referees because after they will sanction you. But people saw what happened. I think FIFA must take care of this. It cannot put a referee like that for a match of such magnitude, of such importance. The referee cannot fail to be up to the task," said Messi in a post-match interview.

Notably, similar criticism was levelled by Portuguese players following their 1-0 defeat against Morocco. Portugal's midfield leader Bruno Fernandes said an 'Argentine' referee should not have been allowed to officiate their match.

"I don't know if they're going to give the cup to Argentina. I don't care, I'm going to say what I think, and screw them. It's very strange that a referee from a team that's still in the cup officiates us. They've clearly tilted the field against us," said Fernandes.

'He doesn't know enough about football': Emiliano Martinez about Kylian Mbappe ahead of the final

Croatia beat Morocco 2-1 in the third-place playoffs of the World Cup at the Khalifa Stadium on Saturday evening to end the African side's dream run in Qatar. Goals from Josko Gvardiol and Mislav Oršić were enough for the 2018 finalists to get the better of a spirited Moroccan side.

Both teams came into the contest after suffering the disappointment of not making it to the final of the quadrennial event. Though many would have anticipated the third-place match to be devoid of any intensity, it certainly wasn't the case.

The passion and desire to win a football match was as high as the motivation that playing in a World Cup final brings - making up for an intriguing watch for the neutrals.

A blistering start to the match

The two teams were off the blocks in a lightning-quick manner with Croatia drawing the first blood. A fee-kick curled from 40-50 yards out was cushioned into the back of the net, past a diving Bounou by Gvardiol, one of the stars of the tournaments, with much ease in the seventh minute.

However, before Croatian fans even had the time to rejoice their team's goal, Morocco, through a free kick two minutes later, managed to restore the parity.

Walid Regragui and his men, known for their defensive solidity were often scruffy in their clearances. Croatia had numerous chances within the first half an hour to double the lead.

The half-hearted clearances from Morocco came back to haunt them when Mislav Oršić, given a starting place in the playing XI tied the laces behind a beautiful curling shot in the 42nd minute that flew past Bounou , who had no chance to stop that.

The goal came against the run of play as Morocco had amassed a flurry of chances in the 15 minutes prior to it.

After the break, Regragui made one substitution by replacing Abdelhamid Sabiri with Ilias Chair. However, it was the 2018 finalists that picked up the tempo first with goalscorer Orisic letting one fly that grazed the side netting.

Perhaps Morocco's biggest chance of the match came in the 75th minute when Youssef En-Nesyri, loitering all alone at the far post was found by his teammate.

En-Nesyri, the hero of the quarterfinal against Portugal pulled the trigger but for the umpteenth time for Croatia, keeper Livakovic came to the rescue.

Afterwards, the Moroccan players had a tough time keeping their heads about it as tempers flared, trying to chase the equalising goal. Morocco tried hard but with no finesse in the final third, they had to pay dearly, once again.

Playing XI changes

Croatia started the game with coach Zlatko Dalic making five changes to the starting XI from their defeat against Argentina. The most notable omission was of Marcelo Brozovic who had to leave the field during the last game, soon after halftime.

As for Morocco, their captain Romain Saiss could not break into the XI after failing to recover from an injury.

Morocco may not have reached the finals or won third place but their fairytale run at the World Cup will be remembered for ages. They have given hope, not only to Asia, Africa or the Arab world hope but to all those nations that dream of making it to the World Cup one day.

"It's a bitter defeat but I think it's deserved. We have a team that never gave in. We'll remember a lot of matches, we're going to come back stronger. We've united our country for a month, everybody was happy," said Regragui ina post-match interview.

A blistering start to the match The two teams were off the blocks in a lightning-quick manner with Croatia drawing the first blood. Mislav Orsic with 𝐚 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐫𝐭 🖌️🎨 Is this the goal that helps #Croatia earn the 🥉 in #Qatar2022? Playing XI changes Croatia started the game with coach Zlatko Dalic making five changes to the starting XI from their defeat against Argentina. As for Croatia, it was the first time since 1998 that they finished third at the FIFA World Cup, having beaten Netherlands 2-1 at Parc des Princes that time. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Defending champions France will aim to get past the giant-killers in Morocco whereas the latter has the momentum and confidence in their favour and will back themselves to reach their first-ever finale by marching past the French line-up. However, it won't be an easy task by any means.

France and Morocco have had an interesting campaign so far. The defenders eased past Australia and Denmark before losing 1-0 to Tunisia in the group stage. In the Round of 16, they defeated Poland 3-1 and edged past England, 2-1, in the quarters to reach the semis. Morocco, on the other hand, has had a dream run as they remain unbeaten in the competition. They held onto a 0-0 draw versus Croatia, beat Belgium 2-0 and went past Canada 2-1 to top their group. In R16, they beat Spain in the penalty shootout and got the better of Portugal, 1-0, in the quarter-finals to reach the last four.

In head-to-head, France and Morocco have met only five times with the star-studded French line-up leading 3-1 along with a draw. Here's everything you need to know about the semi-final clash:

Argentina have made it to the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 edition after beating 2018 runners-up Croatia 3-0 in the first semi-final on Wednesday (December 14). Lionel Messi & Co. will now face the winner of France versus Morocco, who will lock horns in the second semi-final of the showpiece event on Thursday (December 15). Defending champions France will aim to keep their World Cup dreams alive by getting past Morocco whereas the latter have been one of the most impressive sides in the tournament and will like to proceed to the summit clash keeping their unbeaten streak alive.

Prior to all the drama and action in the second semi-final, France and Morocco haven't met on several occasions. Here's reliving their most recent face-off, which took place 15 years back in 2007:

Back in 2007, both sides had settled for a 2-2 stalemate in a match at the Stade de France, Paris. Morocco had gained a 1-0 lead by virtue of Tarik Sektioui, in the eighth minute, with France's Sidney Govou equalising the scoreline soon. In the second half, France earned a 2-1 lead courtesy of a goal from Samir Nasri before Youssef Mokhtari found the back of the net in the last phase of the game to enable a draw. So far, France and Morocco have met only on five occasions in international friendlies, with the former having a 3-1 lead. It is to be noted that they have never met in a World Cup.

It will be interesting to see if Morocco continue to be the giant killers after getting past some big teams in the competition so far. They have already beaten the likes of Belgium, Spain and Portugal and, hence, Kylian Mbappe-starrer France won't take them lightly by any means. On the other hand, France also have enough firepower and are being considered as favourites owing to their experience of the knockout stages.

Former German goalkeeper and current CEO of Bayern Munich Oliver Kahn said Manuel Neuer suffered a season-ending injury because he 'never listens to anyone'.

Ever since reports emerged that both Man United and the Liverpool FC owners are willing to sell the club, Indian industrialist Mukesh Ambani has emerged as a strong contender to buy one of the two clubs.
After a riveting group stage and Round of 16, the quarter-finals of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022, in Qatar, lived up to expectations. The stage is now set for the semi-finals before the marquee finale takes place on December 18. Lionel Messi's Argentina, Luka Modric-led Croatia, underdogs Morocco, and defending champions France are alive in the competition and will hope to get past the semi-final stage to reach the summit clash.

Ahead of the first semi-final, between 2018 runners-up Croatia and Argentina, Indian men's current football coach Igor Stimac spilled the beans on the clash, addressed the referee controversy in the quarters, and revealed why he is backing his national team Croatia to end Messi's WC dreams during an exclusive interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo. Excerpts:

Your take on back-to-back WC semis for Croatia?

Yeah, definitely a big moment. Second consecutive time for a country whom not many gave a chance. To date, Croatia have the lowest rate of expectations globally of standing any chance of going through the semis or winning the World Cup title. Most of them are very surprised with Croatia being here in the semis.

PREDICTION KING

It is to be noted that Stimac had rightly predicted the semi-finals of the Qatar 2022 edition. Some time back, he had tweeted saying, "My predictions generally never go wrong. As I don’t like to guess but think with the combination of mind & heart! IDEMO Hrvatska!"

'Croatian team is master of working football'

Prior to our quarter-final game versus Brazil, an English journalist -- for whom I've a feeling was born in Croatia and living with us through our momentum and through the past decades -- said that Croatian team is master of working football. It is very interesting. It said that there is no team in the world as Croatia which can bring you down to its space and suck you in. That's exactly what has happened with our opponents in this WC.

On Croatia's spectacular win over Brazil in the QFs

Stimac stated, "We have the best midfield line in the world. So many teams will be outplayed. We have far better midfield line than Argentina. In each aspect of the game, technically and tactically, Croatia is very strong. If you ask me what is the strength of this Croatian side? I will say: confidence, mental strength and resilience."

How has Croatia reached this far?

We are talking about collective team game, we are not taking about individual performances. The team is winning the games for us. Only great teams can expose any individuals. One great individual cannot take the team too far.

How to beat Argentina: The referee angle

Apart from keeping our momentum and style, we need to be very careful with the referee today. That's our main worry as we could clearly see what was happening in their last game, versus the Netherlands in the quarters (Spain's Antonio Mateu Lahoz was slammed for making questionable decisions as he issued as many as total of 15 yellow cards in the intense clash). I would be worried about not the game today but for football globally. I wouldn't like the referee to decide the fate of the contest today. We need to behave well and not give any reason whatsoever to help Argentina today.

Modric vs Messi

The clash will be a face-off between two modern-day greats in the form of Messi and Modric. Both have had a stellar run in international football and are on the verge of reaching the final in what is likely to be their last WC appearance. They have a lot of similarities as well. Messi, with 95 goals in 170 internationals, was the best player in his side's second-spot finish in the 2014 edition. Modric was the best performer in 2018 when Croatia created history by reaching the finale. Who will make the difference today?

In this regard, Stimac opined, "I can clearly see Modric in a far better momentum as compared since the last four years. There are so many symphathies with Messi all over the world and most of the global pollution wants to see him lift the trophy but to do so, he will need to have the best game of his life. I don't think the Croatians will allow him to do."

Any pressure on favourites Argentina and France?

"You can clearly see that Argentina isn't accepting the role of favourites for today's game. They are giving it back to Croatia. They are not enjoying this (laughs). Anyway, we are not under pressure. We know what we need to do on the pitch. That's the most important thing," signed off Stimac.

Excerpts: Your take on back-to-back WC semis for Croatia? Yeah, definitely a big moment. Second consecutive time for a country whom not many gave a chance. To date, Croatia have the lowest rate of expectations globally of standing any chance of going through the semis or winning the World Cup title. Most of them are very surprised with Croatia being here in the semis. Also read: Argentina vs Croatia FIFA World Cup, SF 1 Broadcast TV and OTT-Live Streaming: When and where to watch? PREDICTION KING It is to be noted that Stimac had rightly predicted the semi-finals of the Qatar 2022 edition. Some time back, he had tweeted saying, "My predictions generally never go wrong. As I don’t like to guess but think with the combination of mind & heart! IDEMO Hrvatska!" My predictions generally never go wrong. As i doesn’t like to guess but think with the combination of mind & heart! IDEMO Hrvatska 💪🏻🇭🇷 @Sports18 @jiostudios @HNS_CFF https://t.co/6jrPgBldE4 pic.twitter.com/qFkRa14Abw — Igor Štimac (@stimac_igor) December 12, 2022 × 'Croatian team is master of working football' Prior to our quarter-final game versus Brazil, an English journalist -- for whom I've a feeling was born in Croatia and living with us through our momentum and through the past decades -- said that Croatian team is master of working football. It is very interesting. It said that there is no team in the world as Croatia which can bring you down to its space and suck you in. That's exactly what has happened with our opponents in this WC. On Croatia's spectacular win over Brazil in the QFs Stimac stated, "We have the best midfield line in the world. So many teams will be outplayed. We have far better midfield line than Argentina. In each aspect of the game, technically and tactically, Croatia is very strong. If you ask me what is the strength of this Croatian side? I will say: confidence, mental strength and resilience." How has Croatia reached this far? We are talking about collective team game, we are not taking about individual performances. The team is winning the games for us. Only great teams can expose any individuals. One great individual cannot take the team too far. How to beat Argentina: The referee angle Apart from keeping our momentum and style, we need to be very careful with the referee today. Also read: EXPLAINED: Why could Messi be suspended from FIFA World Cup 2022 semifinal clash against Croatia? Modric vs Messi The clash will be a face-off between two modern-day greats in the form of Messi and Modric. I don't think the Croatians will allow him to do." Any pressure on favourites Argentina and France? "You can clearly see that Argentina isn't accepting the role of favourites for today's game. They are giving it back to Croatia. They are not enjoying this (laughs). Anyway, we are not under pressure. We know what we need to do on the pitch. That's the most important thing," signed off Stimac.

Exclusive: Croatia will restrict Lionel Messi from having the best game of his life in SF 1, says Igor Stimac

'I fought for it...': Cristiano Ronaldo opens up for the first time after World Cup exit

Cristiano Ronaldo exited the FIFA World Cup following a painful loss to Morocco in the quarterfinal, maybe for the final time. Portugal fans across the world were shattered after Ronaldo's exit from the big tournament. Miles apart, Indian batsman Virat Kohli has sent a moving tribute to the Portuguese football legend. Kohli called Ronaldo, GOAT - the greatest of all time, on his Instagram post on Monday. Kohli said that no trophy or any title can take anything from what Cristiano Ronaldo has done in this sport and for sports fans around the world.

One of the best players of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, might have participated in his final World Cup. Ronaldo has not been playing well in Qatar, scoring only one goal against Ghana. Portugal coach Fernando Santos benched his star player for Portugal's next two knockout games after replacing him in the team's loss to South Korea in the group stage. Santos responded to the criticism, said, despite the team's World Cup exit, he had no remorse in benching his best player Cristiano Ronaldo.

Former Indian skipper Kohli recently completed his four-year quest for an ODI century against Bangladesh. Taking to Instagram, Kohli backed Ronaldo after his World Cup loss. He wrote, "No title can explain the impact you have had on people and what I and so many around the world feel when we watch you play. That is a gift from god." “A real blessing to a man who plays his heart out every single time and is the epitome of hard work and dedication and a true inspiration for any sportsperson. You are for me the greatest of all time,” Kohli added. He also put in a goat and a crown emoji to end his Instagram post.

From the beginning of the World Cup in Qatar, Ronaldo has been the subject of several controversies. After a contentious interview with Piers Morgan that resulted in the termination of his contract with Premier League team Manchester United, he landed in Qatar. Ronaldo during the interview confirmed this will definitely be his last should Portugal lift the title. Naturally, Ronaldo's previous squad was the primary focus of the discussion, and when questioned about the Red Devils since his return in 2021, he was blunt. “At United, the progress was zero, in my opinion," Ronaldo said. It did stir a lot of controversies and now it will be interesting to watch which club will sign Ronaldo after the World Cup games in Qatar.
The FIFA World Cup in Qatar has reached its business end. Only four games remain in what has been a tournament for the ages. Upsets have been the central theme with several dark horses punching well above their weight. The World Cup has also demonstrated that possession-based football is not the only way to win football games.

Teams like Morocco, Japan, South Korea and Australia managed to make their way to the knockouts without having the lion's share of possession.

Japan throughout their stay in the tournament had an average ball possession of 35 per cent. Compare it to Spain (75.8 per cent) who lost to Japan in the group stage and the difference in possession is a staggering 40 per cent.

In the match between the two teams, Spain dominated the game with 83 per cent possession and 12 shots with five on target. However, Japan with a measly 17 per cent possession managed to edge out the 2010 champions, courtesy of goals from Ritsu Doan and Ao Tanaka.

Notably, this was not the first time that Spain suffered a WC defeat despite bossing the game in possession. In 2018, Spain lost to Russia on penalties after having 79 per cent possession.

Japan followed a similar script against Germany where they only had 26 per cent possession. The game ended 2-1 in Japan's favour as Germany (3.53) only won on the expected goals metric.

Speaking of Asian teams, South Korea en route the round of 16 conducted a 2002-esque giant-killing operation by beating 2016 Euro champions Portugal.

During the match, Korea had 38 per cent possession to Portugal's 62 per cent. Yet the Asian outfit matched Portugal on number of shots and shots on target. Eventually, it was Korea's counter-attacking game that proved too hot for the Portuguese side.

Of the four semifinalists, Morocco have the lowest possession percentage standing at 32.4 per cent. To give a perspective, the number is far lower than the possession figure of Australia, Japan and Saudi Arabia, who fashioned some of the memorable upsets of the tournament.

Morocco have reached the last four of the tournament solely based on the philosophy of defending deep and making incisive moves with royal efficiency. The Atlas Lions have defeated the likes of Belgium, Spain and Portugal in the World Cup without conceding a goal. Their xG (3.13) is the lowest of the lot yet they are the ones on the verge of creating history.

Even teams like the Netherlands who narrowly missed out on a semifinal berth played a less pressing game. Manager Louis Van Gaal set up his team in a mid-block; meaning the men-in-Orange were happy to concede the ball, sit back, soak pressure and create high-quality chances in between.

However, in the Argentina game, Sacloni's men allowed the Dutch to have the ball which was antithetical to the philosophy they had followed in the World Cup till then. The goal by Molina and Messi threw a monkey wrench into the plans and the Dutch were forced to attack the ball.

Argentina had used a similar ploy in the Copa America the previous year where Messi dropped in deep and carried the transitions on his shoulder.

France under Didier Deschamps have also not shied away from surrendering the ball and allowing teams to dominate. In the game against Poland, France gave ample opportunities to Lewandowski and co. to create before countering on a stretched Polish defence.

Kylian Mbappe’s pace and Antoine Griezzman being allowed to roam free in the inverted regions have allowed France to counter with a lethal pace. It is reminiscent of the 2018 World Cup where Mbappe was the wide outlet while the likes of Blaise Matuiti stretched the midfield by hugging the touchline.

Spain and Germany won successive World Cups with a possession-based game. However, since then, both have failed to make it big at the quadrennial event, suggesting that opposition teams are willing to allow them to knock the ball away from their final third while waiting to pounce on a counter-attack opportunity.
