From Morocco's fairytale run to end of USA's reign - Best moments from 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

Lionel Messi could clinch his first trophy with Inter Miami, just four weeks after making his debut for the club, when his team face Nashville in the final of the Leagues Cup in Tennessee on Saturday.

The Argentine World Cup winner has had a transformative impact on the club, scoring nine goals in six games, as they have marched through the new summer tournament, which also includes Mexican Liga MX clubs.

Now he has the chance to quickly get some American silverware to add to the huge collection of trophies he has gathered with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and the Argentine national team.

"It would be great, incredible for me, for the fans, and for the club itself. The club is trying to grow and investing a lot, with major changes to put together a team, and winning titles helps a lot," Messi said.

"It’s a very young club...it would be beautiful for everyone," he added.

With a goal from Messi in every game and open, attacking football from Miami, the seven-times Ballon d'Or winner has turned a competition which could have been a mid-season curiosity into must-watch action for broadcasters Apple TV.

He has also inspired a turnaround in fortunes for Miami which has been faster and more impactful than even the most optimistic Miami fan expected.

When Messi arrived in South Florida he joined a club rooted to the bottom of the standings in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference and with the worst record of any of the 29 clubs in the league.

But with the Spanish pair of former Barcelona team-mates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also joining him at the club, Miami have been unstoppable.

Only once in the six games in the tournament did Miami fail to win -- a comeback 4-4 draw at Dallas which ended in victory after a penalty shoot-out.

In the semi-final, the team showed just how radically they have improved, by winning 4-1 at Philadelphia, last season's MLS runners-up who had been unbeaten at home in their last 15 games.

<h2>Not invincible</h2>

Mexicans Cruz Azul along with MLS's Atlanta United, Orlando City and Charlotte, have all fallen against the new Miami, but full-back DeAndre Yedlin said there is no question of the team, now coached by Argentine Gerardo "Tata" Martino, being unbeatable.

"I don't think our team's invincible. I don't think, we're a perfect team but we're obviously in good form right now," he said.

"We're very confident right now but we've also only been together for a (few weeks)," he added.

Before flying to Nashville, Martino and his staff showed the team a video of their performance against Philadelphia, highlighting their errors.

"We've definitely given teams opportunities and those are mistakes that we have to clean up to become even better. But at the end of the day, we're confident," he said.

Nashville are also playing in the final after an impressive run, culminating in a 2-0 last four victory over Mexico's Monterrey.

Gary Smith's side have reached the final the hard way with a series of surprise wins -- defeating Eastern Conference leaders FC Cincinnati and Mexican giants Club America on penalties before thrashing Minnesota United 5-0 in the quarters.

German Hany Mukhtar and Englishman Sam Surridge have formed an effective attacking partnership while American defender Walker Zimmerman has been impressive at the back.

Englishman Smith is well aware of the task that faces his team however.

"They're playing such good football, they're scoring goals, they look a side that's unrecognizable from a month ago. I've never in all my time in football seen a transformation of a team that we're currently seeing," he said.

"I do believe that in a Cup final, and at home, we'll be prepared. There will certainly be no fear in the way that we play. And we'll try and give ourselves the very best opportunity to do what nobody else has done at the moment, which is beat Miami."

Football: Lionel Messi aims to end first month at Miami with trophy

Lionel Messi said on Thursday he has re-found happiness since joining Inter Miami, describing his move to Major League Soccer as the "opposite" of his transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi, who has scored nine goals in six appearances since joining Miami, joined the MLS club after two seasons in France with PSG.

Speaking to local media for the first time since arriving in Miami, a relaxed Messi talked positively of his life in South Florida and contrasted it with his time in the French capital, which drew to a close earlier this year with sections of PSG's fans booing him.

"As I said at the time, my departure to Paris was not something I wanted, it was not something I wanted to leave Barcelona and, so to speak, it was from one day to the next," he said.

"And, well, I also had to get used to a place that was totally different from where I had been living all my life, both in terms of the city and in a sporting sense, and, well, it was difficult, but the opposite of what is happening to me now here," he said.

Messi had been with Barcelona from the age of 13, when he moved from Argentina to join the Spanish giants and his move, after years of success, was primarily the result of financial difficulties at the club.

There had been speculation that Messi might return to Barcelona or join the wave of players heading to the Saudi league but Messi said he was pleased with his decision.

"I can tell you that I am very happy with the decision we made, not only for the game, for how it is going, but for my family, for how we live day by day, for how we enjoy the city, for this new experience and the reception of the people that was extraordinary from the first day, not only in Miami," he said.

<h2>- 'Family decision' -</h2>

"I made two away trips with the team and the treatment of the people towards me was spectacular. So, I am grateful and happy for the moment I am living and above all to be able to continue enjoying what I liked all my life, to play and to be able to do it in this way with joy," he said, stressing his decision had made together with his family.

The seven-times Ballon d'Or winner has the chance to win his first trophy when Miami take on Nashville on Saturday in the final of the Leagues Cup.

It would also be his club's first triumph in just their third season of existence.

"It would be amazing, wouldn't it? Both for me and for all the people who are fans of the club, for the club itself," he said. "We want to be a point of reference and winning a title would help a lot in that. It is a very young club, it has been around for a very short time, and to win our first title would be great for all of us," he said.

Despite huge expectations and the hope that the Argentine World Cup winner will lead the sport to new heights in the United States, Messi said he was simply enjoying the game and his life.

"The truth is that I don't think about all those things, I simply came here to play, to continue enjoying football, which is what I have liked all my life and I chose this place for that reason, above all things," he said.

Messi said his family had settled in well, despite them not yet having found a permanent home in the area and he said that he enjoyed to be part of the Spanish-speaking community in South Florida.

"From the beginning, since my arrival, the welcome was impressive, it is a city with many Latinos, and that makes everything much easier too," he said.

"The Latinos are much closer, much more demonstrative, always showing affection, closeness, and I think that is the most important, the healthiest and the most beautiful thing in order to be able to settle in and enjoy what you do," he said.

"I already knew the city pretty well, how the people were. I already loved it....but to be living here every day and passing all of my time here has let me get a lot closer to the city and the people here.

"I'm happy, I'm enjoying this new chapter of my life, the experience of living in the United States, which was something I always had in mind to do."

"It's been the honour of my life to coach the talented, hard-working players of the USWNT for the past four years," said Andonovski.&nbsp;"I'm very optimistic for the future of this programme, especially considering all the young players that got opportunities over the past few years who will no doubt be leaders and impact players moving forward.

"While we are all disappointed by the outcome at this year's World Cup, I am immensely proud of the progress this team has made," he added.

The USA were eliminated in the last 16 by Sweden after a penalty shootout, the earliest the team has ever departed from a World Cup.

The Americans had won the previous two World Cups, in 2015 and 2019 with Jill Ellis in charge of the team.

Andonovski, an American citizen who was born in North Macedonia, took over the team in October 2019 having made his name in the National Women's Soccer League.

Under Andonovski the USA won a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics after losing to eventual champions Canada in the semi-finals.

"All of us at U.S. Soccer thank Vlatko for his dedication to our Women's National Team over the past four years," said U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker.

"Vlatko worked tirelessly for this team and has been a strong and positive leader for our women's program. We're grateful for everything he has contributed to U.S. Soccer and know he has a bright future in the sport," he said.

The federation said that Crocker has been conducting a review of the women's program and he will now head the search for a new head coach.

The next coach is likely to lead a change of generation with 38-year-old Megan Rapinoe retiring and 34-year-old Alex Morgan and 35-year-old Kelley O'Hara entering the latter stages of their careers.

While there is plenty of young talent expected to be ready for the 2027 World Cup, the immediate task will be to get the team in shape for the Paris Olympics next year.

USA Women's Team coach Vlatko Andonovski resigns following disappointing World Cup campaign

Former United States women's national team coach Jill Ellis said on Thursday that the recruitment process for Vlatko Andonovski's replacement should be diverse but that the sex of the candidates should not be a decisive factor. Andonovski resigned as coach on Wednesday, multiple U.S. media outlets reported, following the four-times champions' early exit from the Women's World Cup this month. Ellis, who oversaw two World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2019, said there were plenty of high quality and successful women coaches but the most important thing was that the U.S. ended up with the right person for the job.

"There's certainly good female coaches out there," she told reporters at a FIFA technical briefing in Sydney on Thursday. "So what I would hope in this process is it's robust, it's diverse, but at the end of the day, this is a critical hire ... and I think it has to be the right person." Andonovski faced sky-high expectations when he took over nearly four years ago, after Ellis had guided the team to back-to-back World Cup triumphs.

He led the United States to a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics but there were early signs of trouble at the competition in Australia and New Zealand as the team failed to hit their stride after a slew of pre-tournament injuries. Ultimately, their bid for an unprecedented third consecutive title in New Zealand and Australia ended in a round-of-16 loss to Sweden, marking their worst performance in the quadrennial tournament.

Ellis said she was a great advocate for women coaches in the women's game and spoke in glowing terms about the job Sarina Wiegman had done in taking England to Sunday's World Cup final against Spain. "We need to make sure we're creating and providing opportunities for women," she added. "But not just giving them the opportunities, making sure they're supported and they're educated and they're ready to take those responsibilities and those opportunities. "So I think it's critical hire, it's got to be the right coach for this position. But in terms of gender, what we know is that in the last however many major tournaments, I think women have done alright."

Since 2000, all but one of the major women's football titles - the Women's World Cup, Women's Euros and the Olympics - have been won by teams coached by women.

USA women need the best coach regardless of gender, says World Cup winner Jill Ellis

Former India captain Mohammed Habib, passed away on Tuesday, in his residence in Hyderabad after a long illness. The ‘Bade Miya’ of Kolkata football, as he was popularly known during his playing days, is survived by his wife and three daughters. Born on July 17, 1949, the former India captain represented the country in 35 international matches, and scored 11 goals in the process, after making his debut against Thailand in the Merdeka Cup at Kuala Lumpur in 1967.

Habib etched his name in the folklore of Indian Football in 1970, when he played an integral part in the Blue Tigers’ bronze medal-winning run in the Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. He further followed up by helping India become the joint winners of the Pesta Sukan Cup with South Vietnam in 1971. Habib played international football till 1975. He was conferred the Arjuna Award for his contribution to the game.

Expressing his condolences, AIFF President Mr Kalyan Chaubey said, "I am extremely saddened to hear of the passing away of Mohammed Habib. The `Bade Miya` of Kolkata football was my coach and mentor in TFA and Mohun Bagan. His contribution to India`s bronze medal-winning team in the 1970 Asian Games will be remembered forever. May his soul rest in peace." AIFF Secretary General Dr Shaji Prabhakaran said, "Mohammed Habib was one of the finest footballers of his time, and remained dedicated to the game throughout his life. I am deeply saddened by his passing away."

On the domestic front, Habib switched over from Hyderabad to Kolkata in 1966 when he joined East Bengal. For the next 18 seasons, he played for all three top Kolkata clubs – East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting – with distinction and soon grew into a legend of Indian football. His grit, determination and never-say-die attitude on the field inspired his contemporaries as well as generations of footballers. He was so dedicated to the game that he rejected all job offers during his playing days to concentrate on his football. In a way, he was the country’s first professional footballer. &nbsp;

Always considered a big-match footballer, Habib always shone when it was needed most. He had the rare distinction of scoring the winning goals in three Durand Cup finals in the span of seven seasons for East Bengal. For Mohun Bagan, he was the key performer when Pele’s Cosmos Club played against the Green and Maroon brigade in an exhibition club in Kolkata.

Habib not only scored a goal in the 2-2 draw but also earned the praise of King Pele for his impressive display at the Eden Garden that evening. Habib was one of the few players to win the Triple Crown (winning the IFA Shield, Durand Cup and Rovers Cup in the same season) for both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in 1972 and 1977, respectively. Habib became a successful coach once he decided to hang up his famous number 10 jersey in 1982.

I am deeply saddened by his passing away." On the domestic front, Habib switched over from Hyderabad to Kolkata in 1966 when he joined East Bengal. For the next 18 seasons, he played for all three top Kolkata clubs – East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting – with distinction and soon grew into a legend of Indian football. His grit, determination and never-say-die attitude on the field inspired his contemporaries as well as generations of footballers. He was so dedicated to the game that he rejected all job offers during his playing days to concentrate on his football. In a way, he was the country’s first professional footballer. Also read: FIFA Women's World Cup creates history, sets crowd records in New Zealand Always considered a big-match footballer, Habib always shone when it was needed most. Having joined as the coach at Tata Football Academy in Jamshedpur, he was instrumental in producing a number of footballers, who went on to don the National Team colours. The Women's World Cup gave the sport a huge boost in co-hosts New Zealand where new attendance records were set, the head of the country's football governing body said. Spain's thrilling 2-1 semi-final victory over Sweden on Tuesday was watched by a sellout crowd of 43,217 at Auckland's Eden Park -- equalling the highest attendance for a men's or women's match in New Zealand.

With the remaining Women's World Cup games taking place in Australia, football officials reported more than 700,000 fans attended the 29 matches staged in New Zealand. "This tournament has seen a colossal change in the way football, and particularly women's football, is seen in New Zealand," said Andrew Pragnell, chief executive of New Zealand Football.

The attendance record was first broken on the opening day of the tournament when 42,137 saw New Zealand beat Norway in Auckland.&nbsp; It was surpassed when Spain's last-16 win over Switzerland and Sweden's quarter-final victory over Japan both drew capacity crowds of 43,217 to Eden Park, a figure matched at Tuesday's semi-final.

"From the historic opening game at Eden Park which saw the Football Ferns beat Norway, this tournament has set a new standard for the FIFA Women’s World Cup," said Pragnell. The country also hosted women's cricket and rugby World Cups in 2022 proving, Pragnell said, that New Zealand can "deliver world-class major events".

The second semi-final will take place on Wednesday (August 16) between arch-rivals England and Australia in Sydney, Australia. Before the clash, Aussie coach&nbsp;Tony Gustavsson stated of expecting a close match but is banking on the crowd support.&nbsp;"If you look at rankings they're favourites, if you look at where their players play, they have starting players in top clubs in top leagues all over the world," Gustavsson told reporters on Tuesday.

He added, "Not just the starting 11, down to 15, 16. We have bench players in those teams. We have players playing in mid-table teams in Sweden. So if you look at all that and you look at resources, financially, obviously they are massive favourites going into this game. But the one thing that we have that they don't have is the support and belief from the fans. That in itself is going to be massive tomorrow."

Lionel Messi extended his remarkable goal-scoring streak as Inter Miami powered into the final of the Leagues Cup with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Philadelphia Union on Tuesday. The Argentina superstar took his tally to nine goals in six appearances for Miami in an entertaining semi-final at Philadelphia's Subaru Park.

Venezuelan international Josef Martinez, Messi's former Barcelona team-mate Jordi Alba, and substitute David Ruiz scored Miami's other goals, with Alejandro Bedoya the lone scorer for outgunned Philadelphia. The result means Messi will now lead Miami into the 42nd final of his career when the World Cup-style tournament for clubs from Mexico and Major League Soccer reaches its climax on Saturday. The win also guarantees Miami a place in next year's CONCACAF Champions Cup, the top regional club tournament.&nbsp;

Tuesday's semi-final in Philadelphia was in theory supposed to be the toughest assignment yet faced by Messi since he made his debut for Miami on July 21 after joining from Paris Saint-Germain. Philadelphia are one of the strongest teams in MLS, and are third in the Eastern Conference standings while Miami are bottom of the table.

The Union have also been practically invincible at home, losing only once in their previous 38 games at Subaru Park. But the home side were left in disarray just three minutes after kick-off as Miami took the lead. A long ball forward from Ukrainian defender Sergii Kryvtsov sowed panic in the Union back line, and Martinez latched onto the pass before rifling a shot past diving Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake.

Philadelphia should have equalised five minutes later when Hungary international Daniel Gazdag went through on goal only to shoot straight at Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender. Gazdag had another good chance after 19 minutes, but saw his curling shot from the edge of the area fly just wide.

If that chance encouraged Philadelphia, the optimism was short-lived as Messi struck once again to punish slack Union defending. Damion Lowe was caught napping and Martinez spun away from the defender to release Messi, who was given far too much time and space to direct a fierce low strike from outside the area into the bottom corner past Blake.

Philadelphia responded with sustained pressure, and Gazdag tested Callender from long range once more with a rasping shot on 29 minutes. Although Union enjoyed plenty of territory and possession, it was Miami who struck the decisive blow on half-time.

Finland international Robert Taylor held the ball up well in midfield and took his time before picking out the overlapping Jordi Alba. The former Barcelona star controlled and buried a clinical finish to leave Miami 3-0 up at the break.

Philadelphia coach Jim Curtin threw caution to the wind in the second half, tweaking his formation to add an extra attacker. But Union squandered two good openings when Chris Donovan rounded Callender on 55 minutes but then shot over the bar.&nbsp;

Jakob Glesnes also&nbsp;wasted a gilt-edged opportunity from close range, hooking over the bar on 66 minutes. Bedoya gave Philadelphia hope in the 73rd minute when he swept in from a chaotic corner, but Miami snuffed out any chance of a fightback when Ruiz restored the visitors' three-goal advantage six minutes from time.

Lionel Messi on target as Inter Miami thrash Philadelphia Union 4-1 to reach Leagues Cup final

The celebrated Hollywood film "The Blind Side," based on the remarkable journey of Michael Oher from an underprivileged background to football stardom, is now facing allegations of being built on falsehoods. In the movie's storyline, Michael Oher, a foster child from Tennessee, is adopted by a wealthy white couple, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy. He subsequently transforms into a successful college athlete.

However, Michael Oher, now 37 years old, asserted that this narrative is not accurate. In a recent court filing, he claimed&nbsp;that he was never adopted but was rather deceived into a conservatorship.

<h2>Alleged financial exploitation</h2>

According to a 26-page petition submitted in Shelby County, Tennessee, the Tuohys purportedly misled Oher into designating them as his conservators shortly after he turned 18. It is worth noting that conservatorship is a legal arrangement in which a court appoints an individual or entity to make decisions and take care of the personal and financial affairs of another person who is unable to make sound decisions for themselves due to factors such as physical or mental incapacity.

Oher contends that the Tuohys took control over his decision-making power despite his adulthood and lack of diagnosed disabilities.&nbsp; The court filing claimed that the Tuohys exploited Oher's athletic talent for their own financial gain.

They allegedly profited from Oher's success in football by negotiating a contract that directed profits and royalties to themselves and their biological children, leaving Oher with nothing.&nbsp;The movie's success generated over $300 million worldwide and additional revenue from home video sales.&nbsp;

The legal document contends that the Tuohys misrepresented adoption paperwork to Oher when he moved in with them in 2004. They purportedly labelled the process as a conservatorship, even though this was not the case.

Oher discovered this alleged deception in February 2023, causing him "embarrassment".

<h2>False portrayal of Oher's life&nbsp;</h2>

Oher has also expressed how the movie portrayed him as mentally slow, which he believes negatively impacted his professional football career.

The lawsuit addressed&nbsp;these concerns and sought the termination of the conservatorship, prevention of the Tuohys' continued profit from Oher's name, and a fair assessment of what Oher is owed.

Cristiano&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;guided 10-man Al-Nassr to their first ever Arab Club Champions Cup title after scoring twice in a 2-1 extra-time win over fellow Saudi side Al-Hilal on Saturday. Ronaldo&nbsp;failed to land a trophy last season after his move to Al-Nassr, who finished runners-up in the Saudi Pro League, but the 38-year-old scored six times in the tournament to finish as its top scorer en route to the title.

The tournament is played by top Arab clubs in the region and included teams from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. The star-studded Al-Nassr side had many chances to score in the first half with close season signings Sadio Mane, Seko Fofana and Marcelo Brozovic all denied by goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais.

The game at King Fahd Sports City stadium remained scoreless until six minutes into the second half when Al-Hilal's Malcom crossed the ball and found fellow Brazilian Michael, who put his side ahead with a free header.

To rub salt into their wounds, the 27-year-old even produced the&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;goal celebration as he ran to the corner flag and leapt into the air. That seemed to fire up&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;and the Portugal captain equalised in the 74th minute when he got on the end of a low cross from right back Sultan Al-Ghannam to score for a fifth game in a row.

Al-Nassr defender Abdulelah Al-Amri was sent off in the second half before Nawaf Boushal was given his marching orders while on the bench for arguing with an official, but they held on to take the game to extra time. Ronaldo&nbsp;then doubled the lead in the first half of extra time when he pounced on a rebound off the crossbar and headed home with the goalkeeper off his line.

There were concerns, however, when&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;was carted off the field with an apparent injury after a collision in the second period of extra time -- just two days before their Saudi Pro League opener against Al-Ettifaq.

Kylian Mbappe back with PSG’s first team squad after constructive talks overnight: Club Statement

Spanish top flight LaLiga has filed a complaint with the European Commission against Paris St Germain's "spending commissions", alleging the Qatari-backed French club are distorting markets through subsidies from the Gulf state.

The practices have allowed PSG, owned by Qatar Sports Investments since 2011, to sign top players and coaches "well above its potential in a normal market situation", LaLiga alleges in the complaint filed on Saturday.

The league said in a statement that "PSG has received foreign subsidies from the State of Qatar, which has allowed it to improve its competitive position, thus generating significant distortions in several national and EU markets".

A commission regulation on foreign subsidies that came into force last month gives it "the power to investigate financial contributions granted by non-EU countries to companies engaging in an economic activity in the EU and redress, if needed, their distortive effects".

"PSG obtains resources on non-market terms which distort several closely related markets," LaLiga said. "It is also able to secure sponsorship income which does not correspond to market values."

"This enables them to boost their sporting performance, as well as affecting the ability of rival clubs to recruit."

"Therefore, LaLiga trusts that the European Commission, thanks to this new regulatory tool, will take the necessary measures to eliminate market distortions such as those described above, which seriously damage the sporting ecosystem."

Last year, LaLiga filed a complaint with the European soccer governing body UEFA against PSG and Manchester City, alleging they violated financial fair-play regulations.

PSG have splashed out on several expensive signings in recent years, including paying a world record 222 million euros ($243 million) for Brazil forward Neymar in 2017 and 180 million euros for striker Kylian Mbappe in 2018.

The French champions also renewed Mbappe's contract last year when he was widely tipped to join Real Madrid.

Mbappe is in a contract standoff with PSG. Relations between the him and PSG have been tense since the French forward said in June, he would not renew his deal, which expires at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Spanish top flight La Liga files complaint over Paris Saint Germain's 'spending commissions'

Dani Olmo scored a hat-trick to guide RB Leipzig to a 3-0 victory in the German Super Cup over champions Bayern Munich on Saturday, spoiling record signing Harry Kane's debut for the Bavarians. England captain Kane had signed a four-year deal amid a media frenzy only hours earlier and came off the bench in the second half but could not prevent a season-opening defeat against the German Cup winners.

The hosts' performance left coach Thomas Tuchel fuming, saying it was as if the team had done no work in their four-week pre-season. "It is a big problem because it feels as if we had done nothing in the past four weeks," Tuchel said. "I cannot explain it. It was just not enough in every department. I have just no idea why. There is no relation between our form and attitude going into the game and our performance on the pitch. "It is not good. It is the worse thing because there is such a big discrepancy," Tuchel said.

Spaniard Olmo pounced on Bayern's sloppy defending in the third minute to slot in for the lead and he added another with a superb flick and turn that left two defenders standing a minute before the break. Leipzig's Mohamed Simakan had almost gifted Bayern an equaliser a little earlier, hitting the post in his effort to clear the ball.

With Bayern wasteful up front, as was the case for much of last season, and squandering half a dozen chances, Tuchel brought on Kane, whose transfer cost a reported Bundesliga record 100 million euros, in the 64th minute to huge cheers from Bayern fans.

He hardly got a look-in, however, with only three touches and it was Olmo who scored again, this time with a penalty only four minutes later, to secure the first title of the season for his team. "It was amazing night. We worked a lot over 90 minutes, also with possession," Olmo said. "I think it was a perfect game.

"We expected to win, we wanted to lift this trophy and there is no better way to start the season," he said. "We want to be up there. We have a competitive team."

Bayern, who kick off their Bundesliga season on Friday against Werder Bremen, will be hoping the addition of Kane will dramatically improve their conversion rate in attack this season, a problem they have been struggling with since the departure of Robert Lewandowski last year.

Football: RB Leipzig stun Bayern Munich with Dani Olmo hat-trick to spoil Harry Kane's debut

The Parkinson’s disease and parkinsonism, a term encompassing motor symptoms present in Parkinson’s disease and related conditions, have been documented in boxers since the 1920s.

It has now emerged that repetitive head impacts in American football can lead to enduring neurological consequences like chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). However, there is a lack of data regarding the connection between tackle football and Parkinson’s disease.

<h2>What is the study about?&nbsp;</h2>

Researchers at the Boston University's CTE Centre utilised a substantial online dataset of individuals concerned about Parkinson's Disease&nbsp;to conduct an extensive study to probe&nbsp;the correlation between football participation and the likelihood of being diagnosed with Parkinson's Diseases.

Their findings indicated that individuals with a history of organized tackle football had a 61 per cent higher probability of receiving a diagnosis of parkinsonism or Parkinson's Disease.

Within this study, the team assessed 1,875 sports participants, including 729 male football players primarily at the amateur level, and 1,146 men engaged in non-football sports, serving as the control group.

These participants were part of Fox Insight, an ongoing online study sponsored by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, focusing on individuals both with and without Parkinson's Disease.

Significantly, the researchers identified a connection between football involvement and an elevated likelihood of parkinsonism or Parkinson's Disease diagnosis, even after accounting for known Parkinson's Disease risk factors.

Additionally, the data revealed that players with longer careers and those competing at higher levels faced greater odds of being diagnosed with parkinsonism or Parkinson's Disease.

Football players at the college or professional level exhibited a 2.93-fold increased chance of Parkinson's Disease diagnosis compared to those who only played at the youth or high school level.

Interestingly, the age at which individuals first started playing football was not linked to the likelihood of receiving a parkinsonism or Parkinson's Disease diagnosis.

<h2>What is the bottom line?</h2>

The researchers highlighted the strength of their study, comparing football players to a distinct group of athletes. Moreover, a notable aspect of the study was that most participants engaged in tackle football at the amateur level, in contrast to prior research that predominantly focused on professional athletes.

After Spurs and Bayern signed a deal on Thursday, Kane was supposed to fly to Germany for the medical. Although there was a delay, the English captain and his camp finally managed to get on the flight to Munich, where he completed his transfer from Spurs to Bayern.

Harry Kane departs as Tottenham’s top goal-scorer across all competitions, with 280 goals in 435 appearances, and is also England’s top scorer with 58 goals to his name. Having made his debut in December 2011, Kane failed to win any trophy with the London-based club at domestic level and international for England.

With this, he also ends up as the player with most goals (213) in Premier League without winning a trophy.

For Bayern, this move is a winner as they finished their search of an outright striker in Kane. Following Bayern Lewandowski’s transfer to FC Barcelona the previous season, Bayern didn’t have a proper number 9.

Now, with Kane accepting personal terms, he will fill that void and begin his new journey in Germany in quest of domestic league title and the coveted Champions League.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich is set to break the bank for the English captain as their search for an out-right striker continues. Following the departure of their Champions League-winning striker Robert Lewandowski the previous season to FC Barcelona, Bayern was in the market seeking a world-class forward.

Having pushed for Kane in their previous failed attempts, Bayern didn’t let the guard down and sent their fourth proposal, which got accepted by Tottenham a day before the upcoming season starts.

Kane, who scored 30 goals in a disappointing campaign for Spurs last season, failed to help his team seal European qualification, as the London-based club finished eighth on the Premier League table. As per several reports, Kane wanted to end all speculations before Spurs’ first game against Brentford on Sunday, August 13.

<h2>Spurs legend on his way out</h2>

After spending 12 years at Tottenham, Kane is expected to be on his way out to Germany to join the Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich. With 30 goals last season, Kane completed 20-plus goals mark in the previous three seasons in an incredible achievement, winning three golden boots.

The 30-year-old striker still has one year left on his contract, and the ball is now in his court to decide his future. As he was deprived of winning a major trophy at Spurs – who last won in 2008, Kane’s move to Bayern could end his wait for a League title despite being a prolific goal-scorer throughout.

As first reported by The Athletic, Bayern is ready to push the limit for the English captain (over 100 million euros) by crossing their previous most-expensive transfer worth 80 million euros for defender Lucas Hernandez, whom they bought in 2019 and now has joined Paris Saint-Germain for 45 million euros this summer.

Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is among several Barcelona players who have yet to be registered with LaLiga due to the club's breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, raising doubts about their participation in Sunday's season opener against Getafe.

Other than former Manchester City captain Gundogan, who joined on a free transfer in June, new signings Inigo Martinez, Ilkay Gundogan and Oriol Romeu have also not been registered.

Players such as Ronald Araujo, Marcos Alonso, Sergi Roberto and Inaki Pena, who signed new contracts, also remain unregistered. That means the LaLiga champions have only 12 players available for their season debut.

Barca experienced the same situation last season, when they were blocked by the strict LaLiga financial regulations to register new signings such as Robert Lewandowski, Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen and Raphinha. They were eventually registered on the eve of Barca's season opener after the club triggered a last minute economic operation.

Defender Jules Kounde, however, ended up missing several games as his formalities were not completed until the end of August.

Clubs have to meet LaLiga's salary cap to register new signings as well as those who sign contract renewals.

Last year, Barcelona resorted to selling club assets as "economic levers" to create the margin they needed with LaLiga, as their debts totalled 1.35 billion Euros ($1.49 billion).

They will not be able to play at Camp Nou for the next few seasons after agreeing a financing deal worth 1.45 billion euros to renovate the iconic but outdated stadium.

The 100,000-seater venue was the club's biggest source of income and they will have to be creative to stay competitive within the restrictions of LaLiga's FFP rules for the second season in a row.

Last year, the club signed a shirt and stadium sponsorship deal with audio streaming platform Spotify in an agreement worth 280 million euros.

They also agreed to sell a 25% stake in their LaLiga TV rights for the next 25 years to U.S. private equity group Sixth Street for 607.5 million euros and approved the sale of a minority share of their audio-visual division to Socios.com and Orpheus Media for 200 million.

It has been reported that they are trying to sell another percentage of their audio-visual division to generate the margin they need to meet LaLiga's salary cap numbers.

Trouble mounts for FC Barcelona as Ilkay Gundogan among several players yet to be registered with La Liga

French striker Kylian Mbappe has decided to stay at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) this season despite refusing their latest yet last desperate proposal, per latest reports. Mbappe, who has 12 months left on his contract, is said to have verbally agreed on a free transfer to Real Madrid next summer. PSG has also decided to remove Mbappe's poster, which covered their home stadium Parc des Princes.

It comes as a setback to PSG, who tried their best to sell Mbappe this summer, with Saudi Pro League Al-Hilal offering unbelievable money (£258m) for a one-year deal. While PSG accepted Al-Hilal’s once-in-a-lifetime offer, Mbappe gave a thumbs down to the agreement, leaving him with Ligue 1 champions for another season.

PSG is believed to be aware of Mbappe’s under-the-table done deal with Madrid as a free agent next year. Meanwhile, the French champions will avoid putting themselves in an awkward financial situation (having bought Mbappe for nearly $160 million in 2018) by letting him leave for free after all these years.

They even cleared their stance on Mbappe – insisting if he decides to stay and not accept any offer (including a loan for this season), the World Cup-winning striker with France will remain on the sidelines throughout the season and will not get considered for selection.

Out of frustration concerning this situation, PSG is also said to have stopped selling Mbappe’s jerseys on their official website.

<h2>Mbappe stays at PSG this summer</h2>

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Mbappe turned down PSG’s final offer as he remains adamant on a Madrid move for free next year. As per a&nbsp;report in Hindustan Times, Romano, while speaking with Caught Offside, said,&nbsp;"For Kylian Mbappe, what I can confirm today is that Mbappe said no to the final desperate proposal from Paris Saint-Germain."

"That was to sign a new contract and include a buyout clause, a guaranteed sale for summer 2024, so he can pick his favourite club and leave next summer as he wants. Mbappe said no – again – and so PSG will continue to keep the player out of the first-team squad, training with players who are out of the project,” he added.

He added PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi is also furious with the complete situation as Mbappe transfer news continues to rock the football world.

"PSG are very strong on their position, believing that Mbappe has an agreement with Real Madrid for summer 2024. That’s the feeling that is driving PSG crazy, and Nasser Al-Khelaifi is furious. We wait for Real Madrid to make a move for Mbappe, and let’s see if it’s going to be this summer or next summer but, for sure, crucial weeks for Mbappe are coming," he added.

ALSO READ: Bayern Munich-Tottenham Hotspur agree on €100m deal for Harry Kane - Reports PSG is believed to be aware of Mbappe’s under-the-table done deal with Madrid as a free agent next year. Mbappe stays at PSG this summer As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Mbappe turned down PSG’s final offer as he remains adamant on a Madrid move for free next year. As per a report in Hindustan Times, Romano, while speaking with Caught Offside, said, "For Kylian Mbappe, what I can confirm today is that Mbappe said no to the final desperate proposal from Paris Saint-Germain." "That was to sign a new contract and include a buyout clause, a guaranteed sale for summer 2024, so he can pick his favourite club and leave next summer as he wants. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The current Women's World Cup will be the best attended ever and is on course to smash the per-match record set in Canada in 2015, Football Australia&nbsp;chief&nbsp;executive James Johnson said on Friday. He also reiterated that a successful Women's World Cup could be a springboard to Australia hosting the men's event. "There have been more people attending matches than any Women's World Cup," Johnson told a press briefing to mark the end of the group stage in Australia and co-host New Zealand.

So far more than 1.2 million fans have passed through the turnstiles and organisers now expect that figure to rise to 1.9 million by the time the tournament ends on Aug. 20. "Our (target) was to get to 1.5 million and we'll go past that," he said, adding that he had also "been hearing stories from all over the world" of record broadcast numbers.

This year's expanded field of 32 teams means 64 games rather than the 52 played in Canada. However, average attendances in 2015 were around 26,000, compared with more than 30,000 so far this time. And, as evidenced by the 40,000 fans who packed Sydney Football Stadium on Wednesday for France's entertaining 6-3 group game win over Panama, the tournament seems to be capturing the imagination of neutrals in host countries where soccer has not traditionally enjoyed top billing. And merchandise is selling fast.

Matildas jerseys, Johnson said, are outselling the Socceroos jersey from the&nbsp;FIFA&nbsp;men's World Cup last year in Qatar two to one. Sam Kerr, the Chelsea striker who sat out Australia's first-round games with a calf injury, is the top-selling jersey. "We're investing just as much money in the Matildas programme as we are the Socceroos programme. That's something that's really important for us," he said.

Research has shown the Matildas trail only Australia's men's cricket and soccer teams in national popularity, and have passed both the country's men's rugby union and rugby league squads. "So the (Matildas) brand is strong, it's powerful," Johnson said. "The brand is in every city and town across the country."

FIFA&nbsp;president Gianni Infantino, who attended Australia's 4-0 rout of Olympic champions Canada in Melbourne, labelled the tournament the "best ever" World Cup during a visit to Canberra this week. Johnson said a successful tournament would encourage Australia to consider bidding for the Club World Cup in 2029 "and then there's the men's World Cup in 2034 that we're also going to look at."

After a successful women's tournament in 2015, Canada will be co-hosts with the United States and Mexico for the 2026 men's World Cup. Similarly, "Australia will no doubt host a men's World Cup one day. And what better way to do that than on the back of the best-ever Women's World Cup," he added.

FIFA Women's World Cup on pace to smash attendance records, says FA's chief executive James Johnson

Australia were in danger of a humiliating early exit after a surprise defeat to Nigeria but they are now into the Women's World Cup quarter-finals and belief is growing that they can go all the way.

Throw a returning Sam Kerr into the mix and add in the departure of holders the United States, and the co-hosts sense that a first World Cup triumph is within their grasp.

The 2-3&nbsp;loss to Nigeria in the group phase put Australia's hopes in peril but they responded with a 4-0 thumping of Olympic champions Canada and beat Denmark 2-0 in the last 16.

Skipper Kerr's belated appearance at the tournament after a calf injury made the headlines but it was Caitlin Foord and Mary Fowler who together blew Denmark away in front of nearly 76,000 spectators in Sydney on Monday.

The Matildas will face France or World Cup debutants Morocco in the last eight and they have all the momentum as they close on a first World Cup semi-final and possibly more.

"If we play like this we can beat anyone," Arsenal forward Foord said after giving the Danes a torrid time with her pace, movement and power.

The 20-year-old Manchester City forward Fowler was just as impressive.

It was her vision and inch-perfect ball down the left wing which teed up Foord for a clinical finish in the first half at a near-capacity Stadium Australia.

Fowler was instrumental again in the second goal, 20 minutes from time, with Hayley Raso applying a deadly finish.

But one of the biggest cheers was yet to come, when 10 minutes later talismanic striker Kerr climbed off the bench for her first action at the tournament.

There was a nervous moment for the home fans when she slipped late on, but the Chelsea goalscorer appeared unharmed and her return is perfect timing for Australia.

The 29-year-old still may not start in Saturday's quarter-final in Brisbane, given she is only fresh off three weeks out with her calf problem.

But if Australia are chasing the game she will be the ultimate super-sub.

Foord called Kerr's return "a massive boost for us".

"For (other) teams looking ahead it's pretty scary to know that she's back in the team and she's going to be a part of it with us," she added.

<h2>Handling the pressure</h2>

And then there is the home support.

A more clinical side than Denmark, who were contesting their first knockout game at the World Cup since 1995, might have punished the home team in the first 20 minutes.

The Stadium Australia crowd sensed their players needed a lift and responded with chants of "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie".

Denmark failed to capitalise on their early dominance and then Fowler and Foord combined to deadly effect to put Australia on their way to a deserved victory.

Australia's coach Tony Gustavsson had tears in his eyes afterwards when asked about the home support.

"I get emotional, I really do," the Swede said.

"The support we feel, thank you. Wow."

Player of the match Foord called the fans their "12th man" and said she felt support for the team building around Australia.

"The whole country is behind us and we do feel it, we do see it," said the 28-year-old.

With growing expectation comes growing pressure, but Foord is confident they can handle it.

"I think you feel pressure when you're not prepared," she said.

"And we feel prepared. We feel like we're ready for any scenario, every match.

"I don't think we feel any pressure, we are just enjoying our performances and building on that," she added.

"We know we have to take it up another level if we want to go all the way."

Women's World Cup: Australia 'can beat anyone', says Caitlin Foord after Matildas enter quarterfinals

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Dutch defender Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg in a six-year deal on Tuesday, August 8. Van de Ven, on Spurs shortlist for transfer this season, had been linked with the club for a long time before pen was put to paper. Spurs will reportedly pay a whopping $44 million initial fee with several add-ons included in the contract. The Dutch defender becomes Ange Postecoglou’s fifth senior signing of the window and will wear No. 37 for the club.

Linked with the club for a long time, Van de Ven was keen on the move from Bundesliga having impressed for the side. He helped Wolfsburg finish eighth in the league, the same as Spurs in the Premier League with both missing out on European football narrowly for the 2023-24 season. He missed only one match in the entire Bundesliga season, scoring one goal for the club.

The Dutch defender was in the Netherlands preliminary squad of Netherlands for the Qatar World Cup in 2022 and captained the side in the U-21 Euro in the past. The 22-year-old started his career at Volendam before moving to the Bundesliga for a reported fee of $4 million in 2021.

<h2>Transfer business so far</h2>

The transfer has bolstered Spurs significantly in the close window with key additions of James Maddison, Manor Solomon, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and young defender Ashley Phillips. However, the club's biggest summer deal is to secure the long-term future of club legend Harry Kane. He is currently with the first team and has been part of another Premier League-Bundesliga domino as Bayern Munich led the chase for his signature.

The club on Monday, August 7 rejected third bid from the record German champions as they intend to keep Kane for another season at the club. Harry has not yet commented personally on the situation and is thought to be not interested in signing a new deal with the club. As things stand, he will be a free agent in July 2024 and could sign with any club on a free transfer.

On the flip side, Spurs are also ready to listen to offers for Tanguy Ndombele, Djed Spence, and Giovani Lo Celso in the remainder of the window. Spurs will start their Premier League campaign against Brentford on Sunday, August 13.

Football Transfer: Tottenham Hotspur confirm arrival of Dutch defender Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg

French League season is about to kick off and defending Champions PSG is in a complete crisis. Neymar has expressed his desire to leave the Brazil team.

Brazil forward Neymar reportedly wants to leave PSG

The Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur have declined Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich's 'final bid' to acquire star striker Harry Kane. For over a month, the transfer talks attracted quite a lot of eyeballs. It was reported that the English club is in favour to sign a young recruit in place of the England captain, however, they have now turned down the latest offer.

The German champions submitted their final offer for Kane for a record-breaking bid which was more than $100 million ($110m). Bayern wanted to finish off the deal by last week and, hence, the offer was followed by a deadline; i.e.&nbsp;August 4 (Friday). However, the German club have failed in their third unsuccessful bid for the star striker.&nbsp;

Bayern have been after Tottenham to attain the services of Kane. However, they have not managed to succeed so far. The club had implied that if they fail in their attempt this time, they would shift their focus to other potential transfers. With over&nbsp;three weeks remaining in the transfer window,&nbsp;uncertainly still prevails over their plan of action in this course.

According to a report,&nbsp;Bayern are now set to conduct a meeting - which was pre-arranged - on Monday to discuss their next move. So far,&nbsp;Bayern and Tottenham have certainly not reached any consensus regarding Kane.

Kane, a veteran of Tottenham with 280 goals in 435 appearances across all competitions, continued to perform his duties for the club amid the transfer talks. On Sunday (August 06), the 30-year-old led the team in the 2023/24 PL pre-season face-off versus Shakhtar Donetsk. In the club friendlies, Tottenham demolished Shakhtar 5-1 with the superstar striker scoring on four instances (including a penalty shot).

It is to be noted that Kane still has a year left on his contract with Tottenham, with enough signs indicating that he is not open to an extension.

Football transfer: Tottenham Hotspur turn down Bayern Munich's 'final' bid for striker Harry Kane

Arsenal beat Manchester City 4-1 in a penalty shootout to win the Community Shield on Sunday and strike the first blow in this season's rivalry between the two clubs.

Fabio Vieira scored the winning spot-kick after Arsenal scored a late equaliser in stoppage-time to earn a 1-1 draw with the Premier League champions and take the game at London's Wembley Stadium into a shootout.

Community Shield matches often have a 'friendly' feel but with cynical fouls and crunching tackles in the London sunshine, there was no shortage of intensity - spilling over perhaps from last season's title race in which City emerged victorious.

"For us, it's a statement. It's a marker to know we can go and beat Man City in a big game when it matters," Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale told ITV. "I'm not sure what it'll be like this season. But that mental block is gone. We're ready to push on now."

While City had the bulk of the possession in the first half, Arsenal had the better chances, with big close-season signing Kai Havertz twice spurning opportunities to bag a debut goal as he had two efforts saved by Stefan Ortega.

Pep Guardiola's side showed more intent in the second half, with John Stones having a header saved, but it was substitute Cole Palmer who broke the deadlock with a curling effort from the edge of the box which left Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale beaten.

Ramsdale was then called into action twice in quick succession, making saves from Phil Foden and Rodri to keep the deficit to one goal, with Arsenal digging deep to level the game via a deflected Leandro Trossard goal in the 11th minute of added time.

In the shootout, City's Kevin de Bruyne blasted his effort against the crossbar and Ramsdale saved a tame Rodri attempt, before Vieira clinched Arsenal's 17th win in the season's curtain-raiser, moving them into second place behind Manchester United in the all-time tally.

The win extended City's run of defeats in Community Shield matches, following losses to Liverpool last season and Leicester City in 2021.

Arsenal beat Manchester City 4-1 in a penalty shootout to win the Community Shield on Sunday and strike the first blow in this season's rivalry between the two clubs.

We're ready to push on now." ALSO READ: There were things I got wrong but I am proud of my career: Alex Hales on playing for England While City had the bulk of the possession in the first half, Arsenal had the better chances, with big close-season signing Kai Havertz twice spurning opportunities to bag a debut goal as he had two efforts saved by Stefan Ortega. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Arsenal beat Manchester City 4-1 on penalties to lift Community Shield

Sweden stunned the United States 5-4 in a sudden-death penalty shootout Sunday to surge into a Women's World Cup quarter-final against Japan and consign the defending champions to their earliest-ever exit. The title-holders dominated the opening 90 minutes but a breakthrough proved elusive with Swedish goalkeeper Zecira Musovic making some startling saves to keep her side alive.

With the deadlock remaining after extra-time it went to penalties in Melbourne -- and the tension went up another notch.

Sweden's Nathalie Bjorn was the first to miss, skying high, only for Megan Rapinoe to do the same. Rebecka Blomqvist's effort was saved, again putting the USA in the driving seat, only for Sophia Smith to blast wide.

When Kelley O'Hara hit the post, it was all down to Sweden's Lina Hurtig, who made sure -- but only after VAR ruled her kick had crossed the line.

The dramatic conclusion leaves the tournament without the two top-ranked sides after Germany's group-stage departure, with the Swedes now considered among the chief frontrunners as the world number three.

Peter Gerhardsson's side, who are striving to better their third-place finish in 2019, next face the 2011 champions Japan.

But it was a bitter blow for the USA and an inglorious end for Rapinoe, the Golden Boot winner at the 2019 tournament. She will retire at the end of the season.

Expectations were high coming into the tournament for the four-time champions, who had made at least the semi-finals at every World Cup.

But they never looked up to the task in the group stage, with just one win, against Vietnam.

This devastating early exit will be seen as a major underachievement.

<h2>- Musovic stands firm -</h2>

Vlatko Andonovski made two changes from the team that drew 0-0 against Portugal, with Emily Sonnett in for suspended midfielder Rose Lavelle and Trinity Rodman preferred up front to Lynn Williams.

Sweden rested nine players in their last group game, but reverted to their strongest XI with strikers Fridolina Rolfo and Stina Blackstenius returning and Musovic getting the nod as goalkeeper ahead of Jennifer Falk.

After both sides sized each other up, the USA worked the first clear chance on six minutes, but Andi Sullivan's drive from the edge of the box skewered wide.

A patient Sweden created space early on, particularly on the flanks, and sent in a series of teasing crosses to use their height advantage, to no avail.

As the game wore on the US assumed midfield control and a livewire Rodman went close to the opener after 18 minutes, letting fly from distance with Musovic palming away.

She was forced into a similar stop minutes later, again from Rodman, but could only watch as a towering Lindsey Horan header rattled the crossbar in the best opportunity of a lively half the US dominated.

The title-holders carried the momentum into the second stanza and only a world-class reflex save from Musovic kept Sweden on level terms, turning a vicious strike from Horan around the post at full stretch.

It was all the United States and a goal seemed inevitable, but Musovic again kept Sweden in the game with another cracking save in the 88th minute, this time from Alex Morgan.

She pulled off two more brilliant saves in extra-time to take the match to penalties.

Defending champion USA crash out of Women's World Cup, Sweden reign supreme in penalty shootout

The Netherlands set up a heavyweight Women's World Cup quarter-final with Spain after ending South Africa's historic run with a 2-0 victory on Sunday.

The 2019 runners-up were efficient rather than scintillating in front of 40,000 in Sydney to ensure they would not become the latest victim of a shock at the tournament.

Jill Roord scored after nine minutes to put the Dutch on their way against a team ranked 45 places below them and featuring in the knockout rounds for the first time.

South Africa goalkeeper Kaylin Swart then made a mess of an innocuous Lineth Beerensteyn shot midway through the second half to gift the Dutch a second.

The African champions will be kicking themselves after having numerous chances in the opening 45 minutes, almost all to their livewire captain Thembi Kgatlana.

The Netherlands will meet Spain on Friday in the last eight.

In an open start, the 54th-ranked South Africans had the first chance on six minutes but Kgatlana fired straight at goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar -- it was to become a theme.

The Dutch took the lead three minutes later, midfielder Roord nodding in from close range following a corner for her fourth goal of the tournament.

The striker Kgatlana, who scored the winner over Italy that gave South Africa their first win ever at the World Cup, was a constant threat with her pace.

Three more times in the first half the US-based Kgatlana could have scored.

Neutrals at Sydney Football Stadium got behind her team and there was a buzz of anticipation each time she ran with the ball.

On 12 minutes she sprinted away from a Dutch defence that was treading water and fizzed her effort just over the bar.

Danielle van de Donk should have got a second for the Netherlands but her tame effort was easily saved by the goalkeeper Swart, then Kgatlana rattled the Dutch once more with a mazy run and shot that stung the palms of Van Domselaar.

South Africa had already taken off injured forward Jermaine Seoposenwe and they lost Bambanani Mbane three minutes before the break when she was stretchered off with a badly hurt ankle.

If anything that spurred Desiree Ellis's side and Kgatlana surged through again but was foiled by Van Domselaar once more with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Moments before the break there was a repeat, the Dutch defence finding the 27-year-old Kgatlana too hot to handle but Van Domselaar standing firm.

The Dutch needed another goal after half-time or had to find a way to suffocate Kgatlana on South Africa's counter-attacks.

Nine minutes after the break coach Andries Jonker thought his side had their second but it was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

The Dutch, who by now were dominating possession, got their second on 68 minutes when Swart's blunder let Beerensteyn's tame effort slip through her hands.

Women's World Cup: Netherlands halt South Africa's dream run, set up quarter-final with Spain

Aitana Bonmati netted two well-crafted goals as Spain thrashed Switzerland 5-1 at the Women's World Cup on Saturday to clinch a quarter-final berth for the first time in their history.

Switzerland kept three clean sheets to top Group A, but it took a mere five minutes for midfielder Bonmati to breach their defence for the first goal for La Roja.

Additional goals from her, Alba Redondo, Laia Codina and Jenny Hermoso completed the rout to the delight of the crowd of 43,217 - a record for a soccer game in New Zealand, women or men.

Codina's 45th-minute effort was a moment of redemption for the defender, who had earlier scored a calamitous own goal with a pass back from 40 yards that sailed past shocked keeper Cata Coll.

The Spaniards will now play the winner of Sunday's round of 16 game between the Netherlands and South Africa.

The 20th-ranked Swiss matched their best World Cup finish. They also bowed out in the round of 16 in their only other World Cup appearance in 2015.

Spain finished second in Group C, beating Costa Rica and Zambia by a combined 8-0 before being run ragged in a surprise 4-0 loss to Japan on Monday.

Coach Jorge Vilda made five changes to his team from that loss for Saturday, including dropping goalkeeper Maria Rodriguez in favour of Coll.

Bonmati got Spain on the scoreboard when she took a terrific turn with the ball to finish from close range but the Swiss equalised five minutes later when Codina put the ball through her own net.

It took La Roja - the Red One - six minutes to regain the lead when Ona Battle swung in a cross that Redondo met with a header from the back post into the far corner.

Bonmati netted her second in the 36th minute with some exquisite footwork that sent two defenders and keeper Gaelle Thalman the wrong way. She knocked the ball to her left foot and calmly curled a shot into the empty net.

Codina stabbed the ball home during a goalmouth scramble before streaking away with outstretched arms and a wide smile of relief to celebrate a goal that sent Spain into halftime with a 4-1 lead.

Hermoso scored the only goal of the second half in the 70th minute, pouncing on a poor clearance by the Swiss that left her one-on-one with keeper Gaelle Thalmann.

Bonmati, Redondo and Hermoso all now have three goals in the tournament.

Spain bag maiden quarters berth at Women's World Cup after thrashing Switzerland 5-1

Hinata Miyazawa scored her fifth goal of the tournament as Japan beat Norway 3-1 in a clash of former champions on Saturday to reach the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup for the fourth time.

Japan have been on a mission to bury the memory of their disappointing exit at the last-16 stage in 2019 and move on to play the winner of Sunday's clash between holders the United States and Sweden.

Although they conceded their first goal of the tournament to Guro Reiten's header, an own goal from Norway's Ingrid Engen as well as second-half strikes from Risa Shimizu and Miyazawa got them across the line in front of a crowd of 33,042.

Miyazawa's 81st-minute goal moved her out of a tie with Germany captain Alexandra Popp as the tournament's leading goalscorer as well as matching Homare Sawa's Japanese record for a World Cup set in 2011 when the Nadeshiko clinched the title.

Norway, world champions in 1995, depart the tournament before the quarter-finals for only the third time in nine World Cup campaigns.

Both teams came into the match on the back of big wins, Japan from the 4-0 dismantling of Spain and Norway after the 6-0 thrashing of the Philippines that resurrected their troubled campaign.

Japan, dominating possession where they were happy to live without the ball against the Spanish, were quickly on the attack but the opening goal in the 15th minute came from an unexpected source.

Miyazawa cut inside from the left flank to cross and Engen tried to block the ball, only to bury it into her own net for the eighth own goal of the World Cup.

Norway were back on level terms from their first attack five minutes later, however, Vilde Boe Risa cutting the ball back from the byline and sending a cross into Japan's box which Reiten met with a stunning header into the bottom left corner.

The Nadeshiko were ahead again 10 minutes after halftime when Risa attempted an ill-advised pass to a team mate inside the box which wing back Shimizu intercepted and hammered into the net via a deflection off Engen.

Norway showed a little more urgency in the final 15 minutes but Karina Saevik could not find the target when free in front of goal in the 76th minute.

Space started opening up for Japan as Norway pressed forward and Miyazawa benefited in the 81st minute, taking a touch off Aoba Fujino's through ball and rolling it coolly into the net.

Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita had to be at her best to keep out Saevik's header in stoppage time but Norway's time in New Zealand was up a few minutes later.
