A judge at Spain's top criminal court opened an investigation into former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales on Monday, following a lawsuit filed over his forcible kiss on Jenni Hermoso's lips after the Women's World Cup final.

Judge Francisco de Jorge of the National Court, admitted the complaint filed by Spanish prosecutors last week regarding alleged "crimes of sexual assault and "coercion", the court said in a statement.

The magistrate also asked media outlets to send him footage from different angles of Rubiales' kiss, as well as the Spain players' celebrations in the dressing room and on the team bus after winning the World Cup on August 20 in Sydney.

The public prosecutor's office filed a complaint against Rubiales last week, requesting that "a statement be taken from Luis Rubiales, as a defendant, and from Spain midfielder Jenni Hermoso as a victim".

Since a recent reform of the Spanish penal code, a non-consensual kiss can be considered sexual assault, a criminal category that groups together all types of sexual violence.

The penalties for a forced kiss can range from a fine to four years in prison, according to sources from the public prosecutor's Office.

De Jorge's decision came the day after Rubiales announced his resignation as Spain's RFEF football federation president, after initially refusing to do so claiming that the kiss had been "consensual".

In an open letter announcing his decision the 46-year-old continued to defend himself.

"I have faith in the truth and I will do everything in my power so that it prevails," Rubiales wrote.

Australian police told AFP on Monday they were willing to help with an investigation, but that a report had not yet been referred to them.

Hermoso, 33, who plays for Mexican club Pachuca, has said the unwanted kiss left her feeling "vulnerable and like the victim of an assault", with a statement on social media describing it as "an impulsive, macho act, out of place and with no type of consent on my part".

She also accused Rubiales of pressuring her to speak out in his defence immediately after the furore over the kiss erupted, which prosecutors said could be considered a crime of coercion.

Football: Judge opens investigation into Luis Rubiales over World Cup kiss issue

Former US national team coach Bruce Arena has resigned from Major League Soccer club New England Revolution after a league investigation into allegations of "insensitive and inappropriate remarks," MLS said in a statement on Saturday.

Arena, the country's most successful coach, had been placed on administrative leave on July 30, while the league conducted a review into the allegations. No specific details of the charges have been made public.

"As a result of the investigation which confirmed certain of these allegations, should Arena wish to pursue future employment within MLS, he must first submit a petition to the Commissioner," the league said in a statement.

New England said in a statement that they had "accepted the resignation of&nbsp;Bruce Arena. We wish Bruce well and thank him for his contributions to the team."

The 71-year-old Arena, who had two spells in charge of the USA national team, said his departure was the right move to make.

"I know that I have made some mistakes and moving forward, I plan to spend some time reflecting on this situation and taking corrective steps to address what has transpired,” Arena said in a statement.&nbsp;

"And while this has not been an easy decision, I am confident that it is in the best interest of both the New England Revolution organization and my family that we part ways at this time," he added.

Arena joined New England in 2019 and led them to the Supporters Shield, presented to the team with the best regular season record, two years later.

The New Yorker led DC United to the first ever MLS Cup title in 1996 and repeated the feat the following season. In 1998, his side became the first team from the USA to win the regional CONCACAF Champions Cup.

He took over as the USA coach in October 1998 and four years later he took the team to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Japan and South Korea -- their best achievement in the post-war era.

Arena enjoyed more club success with the Los Angeles Galaxy who he guided to three MLS Cup titles before a brief return to the USA team, resigning after their failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Spanish public prosecutors have filed a lawsuit against football chief Luis Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion after he kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent, the prosecutors office said Friday.

Spanish football federation (RFEF) president Rubiales, 46, sparked a worldwide backlash after forcibly kissing Hermoso on the lips during the medal ceremony following Spain's Women's World Cup triumph in Sydney on August 20.

"The prosecutors request that Luis Rubiales be questioned as an accused (party) and Jenni Hermoso as a victim," the prosecutors office said in a statement.

The move comes after Hermoso, 33, filed a complaint at the National Court on Tuesday, formally accusing Rubiales of sexual assault.

A judge at the court must now decide whether to accept or archive the request.

If the judge accepts the request, a magistrate will be assigned to head an investigation which will end either with a recommendation for the case to go to trial or be dismissed.

Under Spanish law, sexual assault includes a wide array of crimes from online abuse and groping to rape, each with different penalties. The punishment for a non-consensual kiss can range from a fine to four years in prison.

Hermoso, who plays for Mexican club Pachuca, has said the unwanted kiss had left her feeling "vulnerable and like the victim of an assault", with a statement on social media describing it as "an impulsive, macho act, out of place and with no type of consent on my part".&nbsp;

She has also accused Rubiales of pressuring her to speak out in his defence immediately after the scandal over the kiss erupted, which prosecutors said could be considered a crime of coercion.

Rubiales insists the kiss was consensual.

World football governing body FIFA provisionally suspended Rubiales for 90 days after he refused to resign from his post.

Some 81 players went on strike from the women's side in protest after Rubiales' fierce defensive speech following the incident, in which he railed against "false feminism".

They said they would not return until the RFEF's leadership was changed -- controversial women's coach Jorge Vilda was sacked this week.

Spain's top sports court (TAD) also agreed to investigate Rubiales after the government lodged a complaint.

However, the suspended chief said he would continue to defend himself "to prove the truth" over his kiss with Hermoso.

In a statement last week Rubiales reiterated that the kiss was "a mutual and consensual act" with "overflowing jubilation on both sides".

The RFEF apologised for the "totally unacceptable behaviour" of Rubiales on Tuesday and fired Vilda on Tuesday in the wake of the scandal.

Vilda's former assistant Montserrat Tome is the new coach -- it is the first time a woman has led the team.

The world champions' next matches are in Nations League qualifying against Sweden and Switzerland on September 22 and 26 respectively.

Football: Spanish prosecutors accuse Luis Rubiales of sexual assault

A trademark, curling free-kick from Lionel Messi got world champions Argentina off to a winning start in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday with a 1-0 victory at home to Ecuador.

Colombia beat Venezuela 1-0 while 10-man Peru held on for a 0-0 draw at Paraguay as the long journey of South American qualifying for the 2026 World Cup got under way.

Messi, who led Argentina to their third World Cup triumph in Qatar in December, has yet to confirm whether he will continue with his national side all the way to 2026, but he showed his importance yet again with the breakthrough in what had threatened to be a frustrating night for Lionel Scaloni's team.

Lautaro Martinez won a free-kick in a central area in the 78th minute, just outside the Ecuador penalty area and Messi executed to perfection with his effort floating over the wall and dipping perfectly to beat the stationary Hernan Galindez.

With the goal, Messi drew level with former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez of Uruguay as the all-time leading scorers in the South American qualifiers, both with 29 goals.

The first opening of the game fell to Messi in the 16th minute when he was found on the edge of the box but put his side-foot effort wide of the post. Just before the break, Lautaro Martinez went closer when he slid in to meet a Rodrigo De Paul and his shot struck the post.

Messi worked himself an opening in the 69th minute but his low shot was weakly struck and was comfortably dealt with by Galindez.

But the 80,000 crowd in the Estadio Monumental were brought to their feet by Messi's goal and from then on it was smooth sailing for Argentina.

De Paul, who was excellent throughout, dribbled across from the right setting up substitute Angel Di Maria but his effort was just wide.

Then De Paul brought a fine save out of Galindez near the end with a close-range blast at the near post.

"Ecuador showed they have very good players, that they are physically strong and that they are clear about what they do," Messi said. "We know that in every game we have to give one hundred percent to pull it off. But we showed...that this group will not relax beyond what they achieved, which is something historic and extraordinary," he added.

"We have to be aware that we enjoyed everything a lot, but what we did is over. We have to look ahead," said the seven-times Ballon D'Or winner.

The India&nbsp;Super League (ISL) 2023-24 season is all set to take the centrestage as it will kick off on Thursday, September 21 with 2019 champions Bengaluru FC taking on three-time runners-up Kerala Blasters in the opening clash. The latest season will be the 10th edition of the Indian top flight football as 12 teams will compete for the top honours. The season will run until March 2024 as teams across the country try to win the prestigious title.

The start of ISL 2023-24 will coincide with the Asian Games where top Indian players are set to compete. The Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) on Thursday released the schedule, stating it had taken into consideration all the factors necessary to accommodate the calendar.

“The ISL 10 season schedule to begin on September 21st has been created and approved with extensive consultations involving all stakeholders, including the AIFF. Basis the recommendations of AIFF on the league window, the final start dates were calendarised.”

“All stakeholders have formally agreed to the schedule's dates and structure, which incorporates necessary breaks to accommodate FIFA windows and break for AFC Asian Cup.”

“Given the packed football calendar the season schedule has been designed to consider all these factors leaving no scope of postponement of the tournament at this stage.&nbsp;FSDL will continue to work out optimal outcomes with the AIFF,” a spokesperson from FSDL said.

Earlier, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) chief Kalyan Chaubey requested changes in the original schedule as the players will be on national duty. The Indian football team and its star names will be representing India at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou.

“I’ll be speaking to people in the FSDL to defer the league by 10 days and start it sometime in October so that we can field a full-strength team at the Asiad. The honour of representing the country on the global stage is above all. The national interest should come first and that’s what I would try to explain to clubs and FSDL,” Chaubey said to PTI.

The ISL clubs steadfastly refused to release any of their players to participate in the continental multisport tournament since it would take place outside of the FIFA international match window. The matches for the Asian Games will begin on September 19, whereas the season of the ISL starts just two days later, that is on September 21.

Football: ISL 2023-24 season to start from Sep 21, coinciding with Asian Games

Spain's all-time leading goalscorer and World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso files a criminal complaint against the president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales. Hermoso accuses the 46-year-old of sexual assault for kissing her on the lips without her consent after the Women's World Cup final.

World Cup Winner Hermoso Files Criminal Complaint Against Rubiales Over Kiss

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the greatest footballers of the modern-day game. Two icons of the most-followed sport have had healthy competition throughout their career. Although both are still active, with Ronaldo playing in Saudi Arabia and Messi in Major League Soccer in the USA, their exit from top-tier club football is said to have ended this rivalry.

In a recent chat, Ronaldo opened up on his on-field competition with the World Cup winner. He said both contributed towards changing football's history, and their rivalry is now over for good.&nbsp;

Ronaldo and Messi are the only two players with 800-plus goals, having won a combined 79 trophies across their decorated careers. Ronaldo said both players are respected, and those who like one must not hate the other. The Portuguese superstar added the spectators enjoyed this once-in-a-lifetime rivalry and that the legacy lives on.

"I don't see things like that, the rivalry is gone," Ronaldo said, as quoted by ESPN. "It was good, spectators liked it.

"Those who like Cristiano Ronaldo don't have to hate Messi and vice versa. We've done well, we have changed the history of football. We are respected all over the world, that's the most important thing," Ronaldo added.

Ronaldo said like him, Messi followed his path, as both are still at the top of the games, achieving accolades in different continents outside of Europe, where they both emerged as top stars. Though Ronaldo admits both are not friends off the pitch and haven't had dinner yet, the respect for each other for what they achieved remains.

"He's followed his path, and I have followed mine, regardless of playing outside of Europe. From what I've seen, he's been doing well and so have I. The legacy lives on, but I don't see the rivalry like that. We shared the stage many times, it was 15 years. I'm not saying we're friends, I've never had dinner with him, but we're professional colleagues, and we respect each other," Ronaldo added.

Ronaldo's shock move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr following the conclusion of FIFA World Cup 2022 raised quite a few eyebrows. His record transfer was said to change dynamics in the Saudi league, with others tipped to follow this path, something that happened for real.

"I knew this [transfer market] was going to happen. I said it six months ago, and everyone thought I was the crazy one," Ronaldo said. "But, after all, the crazy guy is not that crazy, and it turns out to be normal to play in the Arab league."

In a recent chat, Ronaldo opened up on his on-field competition with the World Cup winner. He said both contributed towards changing football's history, and their rivalry is now over for good. Football: Brazil drop Manchester United winger Antony from World Cup qualifying games over assault allegations

Spain's football federation (RFEF) has sacked Jorge Vilda, the coach of its World Cup-winning women's team, in reaction to the scandal of the kiss on the lips on player Jenni Hermoso by its president, a source close to the matter said on Tuesday. A new board formed after the suspension of RFEF President Luis Rubiales by FIFA over the allegedly unsolicited kiss during the World Cup victory celebration two weeks ago has agreed to terminate the contract of Vilda, considered a close ally of Rubiales, the source said.

The scandal involving Rubiales has quickly spiralled into a national debate over women's rights and sexist behaviour. Considered a close ally of Rubiales, Vilda had been under fire since last year after 15 players staged a mutiny calling for his resignation because of his inadequate coaching methods and calling for conditions to match those of the men's squad.

Most of the players involved were cut out of the squad even as some demands were met. Danae Boronat, a sports presenter who interviewed Spain's leading female players for her book “Don’t Call Them Girls, Call Them Footballers”, said players accused Vilda of micromanaging, such as instructing senior players what to say in interviews.

Vilda and Luis de La Fuente, the men's national team manager, applauded Rubiales when he refused to resign on Aug. 25 but later issued statements condemning his behaviour.

<h2>Spanish football federation sorry for 'unacceptable behaviour' of boss Rubiales</h2>

The Spanish football federation on Tuesday sent its "most sincere apologies" for the "totally unacceptable behaviour" of suspended president Luis Rubiales over his forcible kiss on a Women's World Cup player. The RFEF offered its "most sincere apologies... for the totally unacceptable behaviour of its highest institutional representative during the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 and in the moments that followed", it said in a statement.&nbsp;

Rubiales, 46, sparked worldwide outrage when he forcibly kissed Spain midfielder Jenni Hermoso during the medal ceremony after Spain defeated England to win the Women's World Cup in Sydney on August 20. He has been suspended by FIFA pending an investigation but has refused to resign, defending the kiss as "just a peck" which he claimed was consensual. But Hermoso said it was not and it had left her feeling like the "victim of an assault".

"The damage caused to Spanish football, to Spanish sport, to Spanish society and to the values of football and sport as a whole has been enormous," the RFEF said in extending the apology to FIFA, UEFA "and especially the players of the Spanish national women's team".

Rubiales' statements after the incident were "inappropriate and meaningless" and "not (the position) of the RFEF" which was "saddened and embarrassed" by the distress they had caused.

Football: Spanish women's soccer team coach Jorge Vilda sacked after kiss furore

Inter Miami delivered the most impressive win of their Lionel Messi era, 3-1 over Major League Soccer champions Los Angeles FC on Sunday, with two assists from the Argentine boosting their playoff hopes.

Goals from Argentine forward Facundo Farias, Spanish full-back Jordi Alba and substitute Leonardo Campana of Ecuador earned Miami a statement victory that moves them within nine points of the playoff places with nine games remaining.

Messi's first MLS appearance in Los Angeles, attracted a capacity crowd, swollen by a host of A-List celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Selena Gomez and Prince Harry.

But the home fans left frustrated as last year's MLS Cup winners wasted a series of chances.

French-born Gabon international Denis Bouanga had the first opportunity, bursting goalwards but with Mexican Carlos Vela unmarked to his right, unwisely chose to shoot and his effort was blocked -- to the fury of his teammate.

Bouanga had another great chance in the 11th minute after a fine through ball from former Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini but Miami keeper Drake Callender pulled off an excellent save.

After surviving those early scares, Miami took the lead in the 14th minute when Tomas Aviles split the LAFC defence to find Farias who beat John McCarthy with a low shot on the slide.

Miami struggled to contain Bouanga but the LA forward was again unable to make the most of his opportunity when he burst through the middle but fired wide.

Mario Gonzalez should have done better when he was given space for a shot but blasted into the side-netting as Miami were increasingly threatening on the counter.

Paraguay midfielder Diego Gomez broke forward and played a clever back-heel to Messi but the Argentine's shot was weak and easily dealt with by McCarthy.

Before the interval, Messi had his best chance of the game, again set up by the outstanding Gomez, but one-on-one with McCarthy, Messi saw his lofted shot pushed away by the LAFC keeper.

<h2>- 'Nice test' -</h2>

LAFC paid the price for the wastefulness in front of goal in the 51st minute when Miami's former Barcelona trio combined in style.

Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets fed Messi who picked out the overlapping Alba and he burst into the box to score with a cool, left-footed finish.

Miami were in firm control and wrapped up the win in the 83rd minute when Messi burst from midfield and slipped the ball outside to Campana who made no mistake with a curling finish.

"You know what Leo is, what he can give on the pitch. He gets the best (out) of everyone," said a beaming Campana. "Right now, the goal is to achieve the playoffs and I hope we can do it to give happiness to the people of Miami," added the striker.

LA got a 90th-minute consolation via Ryan Hollingshead’s glancing header from a corner and while the third-placed team in the Western Conference should have little trouble making the playoffs, they had been given a lesson in finishing.

Miami were bottom of the East and winless in 11 games in MLS before Messi's arrival and after winning the Leagues Cup, the Florida club have won two and drawn one in regular season action.

"It was a nice test for us to see where we stood, what we were able to do on a difficult ground against a very good opponent, the winners last year and we earned a very important victory for what is coming," Messi told broadcasters Apple TV. &nbsp;"This group grows more every day, we have been saying it since the beginning of all this. We were lucky to get a tournament and get into a final and now the goal is to get into the playoffs and fight for the league," he added.

"I feel good physically. Thank God I can continue playing and help the team in whatever way I can and hopefully we continue in this dynamic," he added.

In Sunday's other game, last year's runners-up, the Philadelphia Union, beat the New York Red Bulls 4-1 to keep their playoff hopes on track.

The score was 1-1 when Red Bulls' Sean Nealis was sent off after handling the ball and picking up a second yellow card.

Philadelphia took full advantage of the extra man after the break with goals from Jamaican Damion Lowe, Argentina Julian Carranza and Hungarian Daniel Gazdag.

Players from Spain's women's top flight, Liga F, have called a strike for the first two weeks of the season over pay and conditions, said players' union AFE on Friday.

"The call for this strike is a result of the impasse in the 'Convenio Colectivo (Collective Bargaining Agreement)' negotiations," said the AFE in a statement, the largest of several unions negotiating together on behalf of the players.

"The aim is to make progress in these negotiations, to achieve fair and dignified treatment for women footballers, (and) to address and reduce the existing pay gap."

One of the key issues is agreeing over a minimum wage for players.

Negotiations began a year ago, when Liga F was professionalised.

The first round of fixtures is due to take place between September 8-10, while the second round is September 15-17.

Last season, a refereeing strike had disrupted the first week of Liga F matches.

Eventually the league agreed to pay referees higher match fees, while the Spanish government said they would contribute to a refereeing retirement fund.

Football: Spanish women's league players call strike over pay, not to participate in first two weeks of season

Defender Lucas Hernandez has been recalled to the France squad for this month's Euro 2024 qualifier against Ireland and a friendly against Germany, while midfielders N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba miss out.

Hernandez was sidelined for several months last season after suffering a cruciate ligament rupture at the World Cup, but he has played three Ligue 1 games for Paris St Germain this season after moving to the French champions in July.

Arsenal defender William Saliba also returns to the squad, after recovering from a back injury that kept him out of action earlier this year.

Kante, a 2018 World Cup winner who joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad in June, has been left out of the squad. The 32-year-old has dealt with a string of injury issues in recent years, making just two appearances for France since 2022.

"He's played again, he's played a few games in a row, not all of them full games, with a good level of league, even if the temperatures are high, which isn't ideal," France coach Didier Deschamps told reporters. "He's just come off a year out. I felt he needed to keep going and the players who were there during his absence lived up to my expectations.

"(Kante) is still eligible for selection, but at this gathering I took the option of confirming the younger players who had already responded well to the expectations of the very highest level."

Pogba has made one substitute appearance for Juventus this season after knee surgery and muscle injuries restricted him to just 161 minutes last season, with Deschamps saying he believes in the midfielder's ability to "get back to his best level".

"He has the mental strength and the experience, but it's not going to happen by snapping his fingers. And if he's back to his best, he'll be a major contender for the France team again," Deschamps added.

France, who are top of Group B, host Ireland on Sept. 7 at the Parc des Princes before travelling to face Germany on Sept. 12.

<h2>Squad:</h2>

Goalkeepers: Alphonse Areola (West Ham United), Mike Maignan (AC Milan), Brice Samba (Lens)

"He's just come off a year out. I felt he needed to keep going and the players who were there during his absence lived up to my expectations. "(Kante) is still eligible for selection, but at this gathering I took the option of confirming the younger players who had already responded well to the expectations of the very highest level." Pogba has made one substitute appearance for Juventus this season after knee surgery and muscle injuries restricted him to just 161 minutes last season, with Deschamps saying he believes in the midfielder's ability to "get back to his best level". 12. Real Madrid's winger Vinicius Junior out for over a month due to hamstring injury

Prosecutors at Spain's top criminal court said Monday they had opened a preliminary investigation into&nbsp;Luis&nbsp;Rubiales' forcible kiss on the lips of World Cup player Jenni Hermoso on grounds it could constitute a crime of "sexual assault".&nbsp; "Prosecutors from the National Court have opened a preliminary investigation to look into the facts, which could constitute an offence of sexual assault," a court statement said.&nbsp;

Hermoso later said the unwanted kiss had left her feeling "vulnerable and a liked the victim of an assault", with a statement on social media describing it as "an impulsive, macho act, out of place and with no type of consent on my part".&nbsp;

The court said it was opening the investigation in light of the "unequivocal nature" of her statements, saying it was necessary "to determine their legal significance".&nbsp; "Given the public statements made by Jennifer Hermoso, the sexual act she was subjected to by (Luis) Rubiales was not consensual," the court statement said.&nbsp;

Legal experts would also contact the player "to offer her the option of legal action, giving her the chance to contact National Court prosecutors within 15 days for information about her rights as a victim of an alleged sexual assault... should she wish to file a complaint", it said.

FIFA suspended Rubiales as president of Spain's RFEF football federation at the weekend, and he could face further sanctions in Spain with the country's National Sports Council (CSD) meeting on Monday to discuss to examine the complaints against him.

Acting Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz said on Monday that Rubiales' defiance and the support from some federation members showed that macho behaviour was systematic in Spanish society. "What footballer Jenni Hermoso experienced should never have happened," Diaz said in a video statement prior to a meeting with the women players' union.

Diaz, who is also deputy prime minister in the acting Socialist government, met on Monday with representatives of the women's players' union FUTPRO, which represents Hermoso, and the Association of Spanish Footballers.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, she condemned RFEF members who had applauded Rubiales' non-resignation on Friday. Diaz called for victims of sexual harassment and violence to be better protected.

"On Friday we saw the worst of Spanish society, of the structural machismo of this country," she said. "They clapped and humiliated and made fun of a person they had the obligation to protect under the sports law and far from doing that, they inflicted more damage, more pain, more vexation."

Big blow to Luis Rubiales! Spain prosecutors open preliminary sex abuse probe over kiss controversy

Lionel Messi came off the bench and scored a goal — his first in Major League Soccer (MLS) — as Inter Miami beat New York Red Bulls 2-0. The win also ended Miami's 11-game winless streak as the fortunes continue to turn for them ever since the Argentinian landed in Miami.

Messi, who came in the game one hour after the kickoff whistle, now has 11 goals for Miami in nine games in all competitions. Before debuting in MLS, Messi also helped Inter Miami win the League Cup as well.

Messi's maiden goal in MLS came about two minutes short of the 90-minute mark when Jordi Alba guided Sergio Busquets' pass to Messi. The 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning star then showed his dribbling skills as he went past three defenders to pass the ball to Benjamin Cremaschi. Messi, already in penalty area of the Red Bulls, then ran towards the goal as Cremaschi gently sent back the ball to him and the 36-year-old made no mistake in putting it in the goal post with his left foot. The goal gave Miami fans much to cheer about who had been chanting Messi-Messi since the 6th minute of the game. Inter Miami's first goal, however, came in 37th minute when 20-year-old Paraguayan debutant Diego Gomez scored.

Speaking on Messi not starting the game, Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino said it might happen ahead of the next game and more often next year when the soccer superstar is another year older.

“We will assess further after this evening’s training,” Martino had said. “It is inevitable that we will not have him at some point. I understand the expectations the rest of the world has to watch him, and that is undeniable But I cannot act based on that, because then I would risk doing things wrong. This will happen (giving Messi rest) at least three times this year, and next year more. We will have to find a solution.”

Jude Bellingham continued his superb start to life in La Liga with a late header to earn Real Madrid a 1-0 win at Celta Vigo on Friday. The England international netted his fourth goal in three matches in the Spanish top flight to end Celta Vigo's stubborn resistance and disappoint the hosts in their centenary week.

Rodrygo had missed a penalty for Real Madrid, while Vinicius Junior went off in the first half after appearing to suffer a thigh problem, although early Spanish reports suggest it will not keep him out for too long.

Kepa Arrizabalaga made his debut in goal for Real Madrid on loan from Chelsea as a replacement for the injured Thibaut Courtois, while Carlo Ancelotti continued with Bellingham in the No 10 position, where he has proven lethal.

"Bellingham (was) good, he's still scoring and adding to the team," said Ancelotti. "(Vinicius) wanted to continue, so I don't think it was that serious, he tried, then it hurt a bit."

England international Bellingham continued his fine goal-scoring form against Celta, eventually finding a gap in their defensive armour as former Madrid manager Rafa Benitez lined up with a sturdy five-man defensive line.

Celta thought they had gone ahead early on but Jorgen Strand Larsen's goal was ruled out for a soft foul by the forward on Arrizabalaga.

Vinicius departed for Spanish international Joselu after 17 minutes with his thigh bandanged, a worry for Madrid given their squad is relatively light this season in attack, with Ballon d'Or holder Karim Benzema and other forwards departing.

Former Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza came close after half an hour with a close range effort on the stretch that flew off-target, while Joselu had a goal chalked off for offside.

Madrid found it hard to get Bellingham on the ball amid Celta's suffocating defence, but Rodrygo burst through to win a penalty.

The Brazilian forward had been fortunate to win it after Celta Vigo goalkeeper Ivan Villar pushed the ball away before the pair collided.

However, Villar produced a superb save from his spot kick to keep the score level, before Bellingham intervened.

Spanish soccer boss Luis Rubiales on Friday refused to resign for grabbing star player Jenni Hermoso's head and kissing her on the lips after Spain's Women's World Cup victory, leading the national team to mutiny and the government to denounce his "macho actions".

In a joint statement sent via their FUTPRO union, all 23 of the cup-winning squad including Hermoso, as well as 32 other squad members, said they would not play internationals while Rubiales remains head of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

In the same statement, Hermoso denied Rubiales' contention that his kiss at the medal ceremony after Spain beat England 1-0 in the final in Sydney, Australia, was consensual.

"I do not tolerate it when my word is put into doubt and less so when words that I have not said are invented," she wrote.

Later, in a statement on social media on Friday, Hermoso added: "I felt vulnerable and a victim of aggression. I was simply not respected."

She said she had been put under "continuous pressure to justify Mr Rubiales' actions" by the RFEF. She added that the incident was "the final straw" in a long list of situations that players had been denouncing for years.

The federation, which has not responded to her latest comments, called an emergency meeting on Friday at which Rubiales had been widely expected to stand down. But instead he said repeatedly that he would not quit and complained that "false feminists" were "trying to kill me".

He called the kiss a "little peck" that was "spontaneous, mutual, euphoric and consensual". He also claimed that he asked Hermoso if he could kiss her and that she said "OK".

"Is a consensual peck going to take me out of here? I won't resign. I will fight until the end," said Rubiales, 46, drawing applause from the predominantly male audience.

The comments and reaction from the audience were widely scorned on social media.

Criticism of Rubiales' behaviour after Spain's win has built throughout the week, and acting Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz called his speech on Friday "unacceptable".

She wrote on social media: "The government must act and take urgent measures: impunity for macho actions is over. Rubiales cannot continue in office."

Acting Equality Minister Irene Montero said the state prosecutor and the state-run sports council CSD should act to protect Hermoso.

FIFA opened disciplinary procedures against Rubiales on Thursday after Hermoso said in a statement her union was working to defend her interests and that such acts should "never go unpunished".

Football: FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Luis Rubiales over kiss controversy

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel wants more consistency from his side after an up and down start to the season and has called on his players to replicate their opening 4-0 league win at Werder Bremen when they face Augsburg on Sunday.

The Bavarians, who won an 11th straight league title when Borussia Dortmund slipped up on the final matchday, kicked off the domestic season with a 3-0 German Super Cup loss at home to RB Leipzig. They followed that up with an emphatic league victory over Werder on Friday and Tuchel wants more of the same.

"We have to accept criticism and to keep working on the things that we had the impression we were already further ahead," Tuchel said this week of their topsy-turvy start. "We want to reduce the number of ups and downs we have during the match and between matches."

He had far harsher words for his players immediately after their loss to Leipzig, saying they looked as if they had not undergone four weeks of intense pre-season training.

"Those (two matches) were an example of how extremely different we can play between Saturday and Friday and we hope, in the positive sense, to bring in stability and reduce that amplitude," added Tuchel.

The arrival of Harry Kane, who scored one goal and set up another on his Bundesliga debut against Werder, has boosted Bayern's hopes of a potential Champions League-winning attack this season.

But Tuchel also wants to sign a defensive-minded midfielder, saying Germany international Joshua Kimmich cannot fill that role as he wants the freedom to be more involved in the game.

Kimmich has said he could play in the position but Bayern may again dip into the transfer market.

Dortmund started with a nervous 1-0 over visiting Cologne thanks to Donyell Malen's 88th minute winner.

Coach Edin Terzic is under far less pressure than his Bayern counterpart, however, with club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke heaping praise on the 40-year-old this week.

Dortmund have a trip to local rivals Vfl Bochum on Saturday while Bayer Leverkusen, who stunned RB Leipzig 3-2 in their opener last week to emerge as potential title contenders, travel to Borussia Moenchengladbach the same day.

Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales' apology for kissing star player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain won the Women's World Cup is "insufficient," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Tuesday.

Rubiales, 45, kissed Hermoso as he handed the Spanish team gold medals after they beat England 1-0 in the final on Sunday in Sydney, provoking outrage in Spain. He kissed other players on the cheek or embraced them.

"What we saw was an unacceptable gesture," Sanchez told a news conference when asked about the controversy over the unsolicited kiss.

"I also think the apologies given by Mr. Rubiales are insufficient. And I even think that they are inappropriate, and that he must go further," the premier added.

As the controversy over the kiss grew, Rubiales apologised on Monday in a video posted on social media.

"It was done without any ill intention in a moment of the highest exuberance. Here we saw it as natural and normal but outside it has caused a commotion.

"I have no choice but to apologise and to learn from this... and when representing the federation take more care," he said, adding that he thought the furore was "idiotic".

Rubiales on Monday stressed that he had a "magnificent relationship" with Hermoso.

On Sunday, the player posted a video on Instagram showing the celebrations in the changing room in which she responded to teasing from team-mates by saying: "I didn't like it, eh!" while laughing.

She later downplayed the incident in a statement released by the federation, saying it was "a totally spontaneous mutual gesture because of the immense joy that winning a World Cup brings".

"The president and I have a great relationship. His behaviour with all of us has been outstanding and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude," she added, according to the federation statement.

Spain's preparations for the World Cup were thrown into disarray last September when 15 players sent an email to the Spanish federation saying they did not want to be considered for selection.

Their protest was aimed chiefly at coach Jorge Vilda and his methods, including complaints that he was too strict.

Rubiales supported Vilda and only three of the 15 were recalled for the World Cup.

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will leave Old Trafford, the Premier League club said on Monday following an investigation into allegations of attempted rape of which he was cleared. Greenwood, who was suspended by United in January 2022 when accusations against him surfaced on social media, was charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault last October.

He had been due to stand trial on Nov. 27, 2023, but all criminal charges against him were dropped in February. "All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United," the club said in a statement. "It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome."

In a statement to British media, Greenwood said he had "made mistakes", adding: "I did not do the things I was accused of. "Today's decision has been part of a collaborative process between Manchester United, my family and me. "The best decision for us all is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club."

The Spanish soccer federation president has been criticised by government ministers for kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the celebrations of their women's World Cup victory.

Hermoso was heard telling teammates afterward in the locker room she "didn't like it" in a video posted on Instagram and YouTube by El Mundo newspaper and other media outlets.

The kiss happened as Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish soccer federation, distributed gold medals among the team following their 1-0 victory over England on Sunday.

Hermoso later played down the incident in a statement sent to Spanish news agency EFE by the federation.

"It was mutual gesture that was totally spontaneous prompted by the huge joy of winning a world cup," the statement said. "The 'presi' and I have a great relationship, his behaviour with all of us has always been 10 (out of 10) and this was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude."

Asked again about the incident on Spain's COPE Radio station, she said: "I wish they created (controversy) involving someone else, I’m a world champion and that’s what matters."

Rubiales meanwhile denounced those raising questions as "idiots".

"The kiss with Jenni? There are idiots everywhere. When two people have a moment of affection that means nothing more, you can't listen to idiocy. We are the champions, that's it," he said according to Radio Marca.

However, ministers and parts of the media were angry at the gesture.

Acting Culture and Sports Minister Miquel Iceta said on Monday on RNE radio the kiss was unacceptable and asked Rubiales to give an explanation and apologise.

A non-consensual kiss is "a kind of sex violence we suffer all women daily, which was until now invisible, and which we cannot normalise", acting Gender Equality Minister Irene Montero said on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter.

Acting Social Rights Minister Ione Belarra, who belongs to Montero's party, asked "if they do that with all of Spain watching, what might they do privately?"

A column in Spain's top-selling El Pais newspaper on Monday morning was titled: "Jenni didn't like the kiss and we didn't either" - describing it as "an intrusion, an invasion of privacy, an aggression".

Gender issues are a powerful topic in Spain. The socialist-led government has presided over a raft of legal reforms around gender change, abortion and sex work, but a loophole in its law around sexual consent let rapists out of jail, resulting in a significant electoral loss by Montero's far-left Podemos party, in the government coalition, in July's election.

Messi was also the one who had scored in regulation time for his team in the 23rd minute to take them 1-0. Nashville's Fafa Picault, however, scored an equalizer in 57th minute to bring balance to the game.

This was Messi's 10th goal in seven games since he started playing for Miami and all of them have come in the Leagues Cup. The fans, however, weren't kind to him as he was booed on touches before he scored a goal.

The goal itself was a sensational one with Messi showing the world why he's regarded as one of the best in the game. The ball came to Leo Messi and he dribbled past opposition defender Walker Zimmerman before showing a work-of-art kick. The footballer hit a bending kick just outside the penalty box and the ball went past diving goalkeeper Elliot Panicco to hit the top left corner inside the goalpost. Have a look at the goal here:

Football: Messi leads Inter Miami to Leagues Cup trophy; scores sensational regulation time goal - WATCH

Bayern Munich's record signing Harry Kane scored once and set up another goal on his Bundesliga debut to steer the champions to a 4-0 victory at Werder Bremen on Friday and a winning start to their league season.

England captain Kane, who joined for a league record 100 million euros ($108.68 million) last week to solve Bayern's scoring problems, slotted their second goal in the 74th minute after setting up Leroy Sane for a fourth-minute opener.

Sane added another in the 90th minute with an easy tap-in and Mathys Tel made it 4-0 in stoppage time.

"It was a good evening," Kane told reporters. "It was a tough game but we started well with the early goal. They made it hard for us in the second half but then I scored the second goal and the lads from the bench did the rest."

"I was a bit nervous and excited. Even though it was not my first match for Bayern I was nervous before the game," Kane said. "I had butterflies in my stomach."

Bayern had suffered a surprise 3-0 home loss to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup last week with Kane making a second half substitute appearance following his move from Tottenham Hotspur.

But they were in no mood for adventures on Friday and quickly went in front when Kane sent Sane clear to beat goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka.

Despite having boxed Werder completely into their own half for much of the first 45 minutes Bayern could not add another with Kane marked well and the visitors trying their luck mainly with long-range efforts.

Werder attempted to catch Bayern off guard straight after the restart and carved out three consecutive chances in the first four minutes of the second half.

The visitors, however, heeded the wake-up call and quickly recovered, responding with Kingsley Coman curling a shot onto the post in the 59th and Kane forcing a good save from Pavlenka two minutes later.

Bayern, who won their 11th straight league crown last season after Borussia Dortmund slipped up on the final matchday, sealed the three points when Kane drilled in their second goal.

It was exactly for such scoring prowess that Bayern brought Kane to Munich, with the Bavarians having struggled for goals since last year's departure of Robert Lewandowski.

With Werder having run out of steam Sane scored his second of the evening after combining with Thomas Mueller in the box and substitute Tel fired in their fourth to wrap up the win.

Sweden scored either side of half-time to spoil Australia's party and claim third spot at the&nbsp;Women's&nbsp;World&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;with a 2-0 win in Brisbane on Saturday.

In front of a crowd of nearly 50,000, Sweden took the lead with a 30th-minute penalty by Fridolina Rolfo and doubled their advantage with a powerful strike from Kosovare Asllani just after the hour.

Ranked third in the&nbsp;world, this is the fourth time that Sweden have finished third at the tournament.

They fully deserved their win against the hosts, dominating the midfield and keeping talismanic Australian striker Sam Kerr relatively quiet.

Australia's other dangerous attacker, Mary Fowler, had a night to forget as she struggled physically against the size and power of the Swedish defenders.

By contrast, Sweden striker Stina Blackstenius caused havoc among the Australian defence during her 63 minutes on the pitch and had a hand in both goals.

The Swedes opened the match with far more intent than the Matildas and dominated for most of the first period.

Playing a bit like England in their 3-1 semi-final win over the Matildas on Wednesday, the Swedes slowed the ball down and controlled the midfield.

Australia only really looked dangerous on the transition and for much of the time they seemed to be chasing shadows, struggling to get any meaningful possession.

The Swedes had a golden chance to take the lead in the first 60 seconds when Blackstenius shot low across goal.

Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, who had another excellent night, parried the ball away and Ellie Carpenter did well to clear from in front of an open goal.

The Matildas didn't have their first shot until the 24th minute when a Hayley Raso drive drew a good save from Sweden keeper Zecira Musovic.

But minutes later Sweden took the lead when VAR ruled that Clare Hunt had clipped Blackstenius's heel after yet another dangerous run into the box from the Swedish striker.

Australian coach Tony Gustavsson made an attacking change on the 60-minute mark, bringing on Emily van Egmond and Cortnee Vine, but it was Sweden who continued to control the match.

They went some way to silencing the sell-out crowd when Blackstenius laid a ball across goal for Asllani, who smashed a powerful strike past a diving Arnold.

It was their last contribution of the night as both were subbed almost immediately.

Australia tried desperately to breach the Swedish defence in the last 20 minutes with deep crosses into the box but Musovic was largely untroubled to keep a clean sheet.
