Kylian Mbappe helped Paris Saint-Germain move top of Champions League Group F with a 3-0 victory over AC Milan on Wednesday, while Newcastle slumped to a first defeat, 1-0 against Borussia Dortmund.

Erling Haaland was back on the scoresheet as Manchester City won 3-1 away to Young Boys, and fellow British side Celtic drew 2-2 in Glasgow against Atletico Madrid.

Goals from Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani and Kang-in Lee in Paris against Milan sent PSG top of the closely-contested Group F with six points.

The deadlock was broken just after the half-hour mark when Mbappe received the ball from Warren Zaire-Emery, unbalanced Fikayo Tomori and then wrong-footed compatriot Mike Maignan with a smart, low finish.

Ousmane Dembele thought he had doubled the hosts' advantage on 50 minutes only for a VAR check to disallow it for a foul in the build-up.

Kolo Muani, the third member of PSG's French front three, then did double the lead three minutes later with a close-range tap-in before Lee struck.

"We are very proud of our performance," Kolo Muani said to Canal Plus.

"Winning these games gives everyone confidence."

Newcastle came back to earth with a home defeat by Borussia Dortmund, which saw the Germans move above them into second place on head-to-head.

It was a tight encounter with Dortmund edging it thanks to a first-half goal from Felix Nmecha.

Nmecha gave Borussia a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time with a well-controlled finish following excellent defensive and then creative work by Nico Schlotterbeck.

Newcastle nearly claimed a point in the closing stages of the match when Callum Wilson's header struck the crossbar, before a later Anthony Gordon chance was deflected on to the woodwork.

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic told TNT: "With the first half we deserved to win and the second half we protected the win."

- Haaland breaks duck -

Manchester City made it three from three to top Group G, with Manuel Akanji's goal and a Haaland brace seeing off Young Boys in Switzerland.

Man City endured a frustrating first period on a plastic pitch in Bern, with Young Boys goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi producing several fine saves.

Immediately after half-time a stunning save from the Swiss 'keeper saw the ball rebound off the crossbar and fall straight to Akanji.

The hosts stunned the Champions League holders on 52 minutes when Meschack Elia broke clear of the defence and lobbed a finish over the advancing Ederson.

However, hopes of an upset were extinguished when Haaland broke his five-game goal drought in the competition with a penalty in the 67th minute.

After a Julian Alvarez goal was disallowed, the Norwegian striker produced a fine finish to round off a 3-1 win.

"I am sorry, but this guy will score goals all his life, with the chances he is an incredible threat," said City coach Pep Guardiola of Haaland.

In Germany, Leipzig created a five-point buffer for themselves in Group G's second position with a 3-1 win against Red Star Belgrade, thanks to David Raum, a second-half stunner from starlet Xavi Simons and Dani Olmo.

- Topsy-turvy in Paradise -

The points were shared between Celtic and Atletico in a lively draw, which saw the hosts pick up their first point of the campaign.

Celtic took the lead early when Kyogo Furuhashi lifted the ball beyond Jan Oblak in the fourth minute, completing a fine team move.

On 23 minutes, Joe Hart tipped an Antoine Griezmann penalty onto the post only for it to rebound perfectly to the Frenchman who made no mistake second time round.

The hosts sprang back immediately when a 27th-minute cross fell at the back stick to Luis Palma, who hammered the ball back across the unsighted Oblak.

Alvaro Morata got Atletico back into the tie on 53 minutes when he sent a perfectly judged header back across Hart and into the net.

Rodrigo De Paul picked up a late second yellow card, but the hosts were unable to turn their numerical advantage into a winner.

Feyenoord moved into top spot in Group E following a 3-1 victory against Lazio in the pool's early kick-off.

A Santiago Gimenez brace and first goal for summer signing Ramiz Zerrouki saw the Dutch home despite a late penalty converted by Pedro for Lazio, who dropped into third.

Barcelona saw out a win at home 2-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk thanks to first-half strikes from Ferran Torres and Fermin Lopez, making it three from three for the Group H leaders.

Porto came from behind in Belgium to beat Antwerp 4-1, with all their goals coming in the second half courtesy of an Evanilson hat-trick and Stephen Eustaquio.

Cristiano Ronaldo rolled back the years to score two stunning goals and propel his Al Nassr side to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Al Duhail of Qatar in the AFC Champions League. Former Liverpool striker Sadio Mane and Anderson Talisca also scored for the Saudi side late Tuesday as they made it three wins from three in the group stages of the premier Asian club competition.

Talisca opened the scoring in Riyadh from the edge of the box in the 25th minute after being teed up by the 38-year-old Ronaldo's clever back-heeled flick as the Portuguese talisman went through his full repertoire of tricks.&nbsp; Mane turned and drilled home to add a second 11 minutes after the break and Al Nassr appeared to be cruising when Ronaldo curled home a sumptuous third from outside the box to make it 3-0 five minutes later.&nbsp;

But the Qatari side, inspired by former Barcelona and Liverpool winger Philippe Coutinho, scored twice in the next six minutes through Ismail Mohamad and Almoez Ali to leave the game on a knife-edge.

With nine minutes remaining, Ronaldo appeared to have had the final say as he sprinted on to a long ball from Sultan Al Ghannam and lashed home a superb left-foot volley without breaking stride. There was still time for another twist as Michael Olunga pulled it back to 4-3 in the 85th minute to ensure a nervous final few minutes.

"When you face Ronaldo, there isn't much you can do," said Al Duhail&nbsp;manager Christophe Galtier, who was in charge of French giants Paris Saint-Germain last season.

Cristiano Ronaldo stunners help Al-Nassr beat Al-Duhail 4-3 in AFC Champions League

Former Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazario has had his say in the Ballon d'Or battle between Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland. The Brazilian believes that Messi is the deserving winner of the award, especially after what he did in the World Cup last year.&nbsp;

The Ballon d'Or ceremony is scheduled to take place on Monday (Oct 30) next week at the Théatre du Châtelet in Paris, France and the race for the award is as close as ever.&nbsp;

"The Ballon d'Or should go to him [Lionel Messi], without a doubt. What Messi did in the World Cup was special. It reminded me of the campaigns of Pelé and Maradona," said Ronaldo.&nbsp;

A victory for the Argentine would mean he would collect his eighth Ballon d'Or, propelling him into rare pages of the history books. However, if Haaland lays his hands on the trophy, it would signify a passing of the baton moment.&nbsp;

Last week, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he&nbsp;would love for Haaland to win the prestigious trophy but Messi was more likely to nick the Norwegian in the race.

"Haaland should win - Yes. We won the treble and he scored 50, I don't know, a million goals. But of course, if you tell me the worst Messi season? That's the best for the rest of the players. Both deserve it, what can I say?" he said.&nbsp;

"I want Haaland to have it because he helped us achieve what we achieved. But Messi won the World Cup. It’s good that players here are up for the award, it makes us so proud."

<h2>Haaland vs Messi&nbsp;</h2>

Haaland arrived in England last year and tore up the league, winning the Golden Boot and shattering the record for the most goals scored in a campaign, eclipsing Liverpool's Mo Salah. Haaland netted 52 goals and laid out nine assists in 53 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City last term.

Meanwhile, Messi, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, won the ultimate prize with Argentina when he fired his team to World Cup glory to conquer his final peak. Apart from the World Cup, Messi also won the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 21 goals and assisting 20 in 40 appearances across all competitions.&nbsp;

US university apologises for displaying picture of Adolf Hitler before a football game

Jenni Hermoso was on Wednesday included in the Spain women's squad for the first time since the scandal over the unsolicited kiss former federation president Luis Rubiales gave her following the Women's World Cup final in Australia.

New coach Montse Tome included the 33-year-old midfielder, who plays for Mexican side Pachuca, in her squad to face Switzerland and Italy later this month in the Nations League.

Hermoso has been in the eye of the storm that shook Spanish football after Rubiales forcibly kissed her on the lips during the awards ceremony after Spain beat England in the Women's World Cup final in Australia on August 20.

Rubiales was the head of the Spanish football federation (RFEF) at the time, but he has since resigned following an outcry over the kiss, with 39 players striking from the national team to demand changes.

He claimed that the kiss was mutual and consensual, but Hermoso said it was done without her consent.

The scandal also led to the dismissal of coach Jorge Vilda, who was replaced by Tome, his number two.

Last month Tome called up the majority of the Women's World Cup-winning players for her first Spain squad, but left out Hermoso -- Spain's all-time leading scorer -- to "protect her".

The decision to leave her out was criticised by many players and by Hermoso herself.

"Protect me from what? And from whom?," Hermoso asked in a statement.

Three other players who Tome left out due to injuries last month -- Esther Gonzalez, Ivana Andres and Salma Paralluelo -- were also given the green light to return.

Spain play Italy on October 27 and Switzerland on October 31. Spain currently sit top of their group with two wins from two and will be looking to move closer to booking a place in the finals.

<h2>Tarnished my image</h2>

Rubiales last month appeared before a court in Madrid which is considering a complaint of sexual assault against the 46-year-old over the kiss.

Under a recent reform of the Spanish penal code, a non-consensual kiss can be considered sexual assault, a criminal category that groups together all types of sexual violence.

The penalties for a forced kiss can range from a fine to four years in prison.

Rubiales is also accused of "coercion" for allegedly pressuring Hermoso to speak out in his defence immediately after the furore over the kiss erupted.

Hermoso told prosecutors she was repeatedly pressured by federation officials to "downplay" the kiss.

"I kept being asked to protect him (Rubiales) and help them (the RFEF). They tarnished my image, I felt that no one was protecting me," she said according to a leaked recording of Hermoso's meeting with prosecutors which aired&nbsp;earlier this month on private television Telecinco.

"I want to make it clear that at no time did I consent to the kiss he gave me and in no way did I seek to encourage the president," she added.

They tarnished my image, I felt that no one was protecting me," she said according to a leaked recording of Hermoso's meeting with prosecutors which aired earlier this month on private television Telecinco. Darwin Nunez scored one goal and set up another as Uruguay defeated Brazil for the first time in 22 years in their 2026 World Cup South American qualifying clash on Tuesday.

Liverpool striker Nunez struck with a bullet header on 42 minutes to open the scoring in a dour first half at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.

The Premier League star then played a pivotal role in Uruguay's second goal, holding up the ball well from a throw-in and cutting back for Nicolas de la Cruz to fire past Brazil goalkeeper Ederson on 77 minutes, sealing a 2-0 victory.

The win was Uruguay's first over Brazil in a World Cup qualifying fixture since a 1-0 victory over the "Selecao" in Montevideo in July 2001.

The defeat marked another disappointing result for five-time world champions Brazil, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela last week in the previous round.

The win leaves Uruguay level on seven points alongside Brazil and Venezuela, two adrift of early pace-setters Argentina, who lead the standings with a maximum of nine points from three games. Argentina face Peru in Lima later on Tuesday.

Venezuela boosted their own hopes of reaching the World Cup for the first time with an impressive 3-0 rout of Chile in Maturin.

Winger Yeferson Soteldo was the star for 'La Vinotinto', scoring the opening goal and setting up second-half goals for veteran striker Salomon Rondon and Darwin Machis.

Soteldo opened the scoring in stoppage time at the end of the first half, stabbing a low-angled shot into the bottom corner to the delight of a raucous home crowd.

The Santos winger turned provider for Venezuela's second, bursting down the left flank and cutting back for Rondon to sweep home from close range on 72 minutes.

Soteldo was involved again for Venezuela's third, once again finding space on the left wing and crossing for an unmarked Machis to make it 3-0.

Elsewhere Tuesday, Paraguay got their first win of the qualifiers, defeating lowly Bolivia 1-0 in Asuncion with a 69th-minute strike from Antonio Sanabria.

Bolivia remain bottom of the standings while Paraguay are seventh with three points from four games.

In Quito meanwhile, Colombia maintained their unbeaten start to qualifiers with a 0-0 draw away to Ecuador.

Six teams from the 10-team round-robin tournament will qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time and is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Football: Nunez helps Uruguay upset Brazil in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers

England booked their place at Euro 2024 as Harry Kane's double inspired an impressive fightback to beat holders Italy 3-1 at Wembley on Tuesday (Oct 17). Needing a point to be certain of qualifying for next year's tournament in Germany, Gareth Southgate's side fell behind to Gianluca Scamacca's early goal.

But, fuelled by a superb display from Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, England hit back to equalise before the break, through Kane's penalty. Bellingham won the spot-kick with a typically thrusting run and the 20-year-old prodigy was also the catalyst for Marcus Rashford's decisive strike after the interval. Underlining his own importance to the England cause, Kane struck again in the closing stages to give the skipper his 61st goal for the Three Lions. With two group games still to play, unbeaten England, winners of five of their six qualifiers, are guaranteed to finish top of Group C. "This was the toughest qualifying group with the seedings. We've performed really well," Southgate said. "The players are incredible to work with, so hungry, so eager to learn, so together. "You saw that in the performance. It was relentless. What was really pleasing was that when we went behind we stayed calm." Following their failure to qualify for last year's World Cup, Italy face a tense battle to secure the second automatic qualification place in the group. Luciano Spalletti's third-placed team are three points behind Ukraine. Assured of a play-off place, Italy host North Macedonia before travelling to Ukraine in their remaining matches. "It's disappointing. We were a bit casual at times. Occasionally our attitude was found wanting," Spalletti said. "This is what European football is about at this level. It asks you serious questions." England have suffered just one defeat in their last 63 Euro and World Cup qualifiers, but reaching major tournaments hasn't been the issue in the Southgate era. It is his ability to end England's wait for a first international men's trophy since the 1966 World Cup that will define Southgate's reign. Beaten on penalties by Italy in the European Championship final at Wembley two years ago, England have gained a measure of revenge by defeating the Italians twice in the group. Southgate believes his team are a more complete side than the one that lost the Euro final. And with stars like Kane and Bellingham at his disposal, there can be no excuses if they fail to bring home the silverware from Germany. Also read | Football: Nunez helps Uruguay upset Brazil in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers Sublime Bellingham England showed they have the character for the big occasion by recovering from the collective collapse that allowed Italy to seize the lead in the 15th minute. Declan Rice missed a key tackle and Giovanni Di Lorenzo raced into the England area ahead of the out-of-position Kieran Trippier. Di Lorenzo whipped over a low cross that eluded Harry Maguire at the near post, rolling perfectly for Scamacca to fire into the roof of the net from close range for his first international goal in his 13th appearance. In such sublime form for Real this season, it was no surprise that Bellingham played a major role in hauling England level in the 32nd minute. Catching Italy with their guard down, Bellingham accelerated through on goal before Di Lorenzo's tackle sent the midfielder sprawling. Di Lorenzo claimed he got a foot on the ball but, after a lengthy VAR check, the penalty was awarded and Kane stepped up to send Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way for his 60th England goal. England struck again in the 57th minute as Bellingham tracked back to win possession with a sliding tackle before surging forward from the halfway line. Rather than go it alone, Bellingham unselfishly guided a pass out to Rashford, who punished woeful Italy defending as he advanced unchecked into the area before planting a clinical strike past the exposed Donnarumma. Kane killed off Italy in the 77th minute as the Bayern Munich striker nicked the ball off the toe of Giorgio Scalvini before delivering a cool finish that had England packing their bags for Germany. Football: England qualify for Euro 2024 as sublime Bellingham shines

Harry Maguire has come out in support of under-fire Jordan Henderson after he was booed by England fans during the side's international friendly versus Australia at Wembley. Henderson has been under the radar ever since he&nbsp;swapped his role as Liverpool skipper for the Saudi Pro League, joining Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq in July.&nbsp;Maguire, who has been jeered by Manchester United and England supporters, feels those who slammed Henderson "aren't England fans".

Maguire told Sky Sports, "Proper England fans don't boo players. Don't boo players who dedicate their life to play and do everything they can to make this country have good memories and special moments for them and the fans and their families.&nbsp;I know a lot of top, top England fans and I know the England fans who have been with me ever since my debut."

They're right behind me and they're right behind Jordan as well. You heard a lot of cheers and yes, a few jeers, but they aren't England fans."

Henderson&nbsp;joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq from Liverpool in the close season. His switch has been widely criticised as many pointed out his&nbsp;previous public support for the LGBT community. It is to be noted that homosexuality is illegal in the Middle Eastern country, where Henderson will be seen playing in the near future. The 33-year-old was booed extensively in England's 1-0 win over Australia in the international friendly and the same incident followed in England's 3-1 win over Italy, following which they secured Euro 2024 spot.&nbsp;

Ahead of the Italy clash, England coach Gareth Southgate had urged people to stop the booing. "People might disagree with&nbsp;Jordan's stance ... but I don't think it's a reason to not select him and I don't actually think that's a reason to boo him," Southgate told reporters on Monday. "We'd like all the fans behind us. I'll always pick the players I think ... give us the best chance of winning, unless there's something that I feel is not appropriate. If I just select on a popularity contest then our team would look very, very different," he added.

Henderson, meanwhile, has remained committed to playing for England and leading the side despite the boos and criticism.&nbsp; "It's not nice, your own fans, if they were booing. But listen, people have got their own opinions,"&nbsp;Henderson&nbsp;told Sky Sports. "...it won't change who I am and what I do for this team and for my country. I give absolutely everything every time. "I still want to play for England for as long as I possibly can and give everything for the team, for my country," he opined.

'Proper England fans don't boo players': Harry Maguire comes in support of Jordan Henderson

Some section of English fans booed the minute of silence observed before the Euro 2024 qualifiers match between England and Italy at the Wembley Stadium on Tuesday (Oct 17) evening.

Some section of English fans booed the minute of silence observed before the Euro 2024 qualifiers match between England and Italy at the Wembley Stadium on Tuesday (Oct 17) evening. The silence was observed in tribute to those affected by the terror strike in Brussels that killed two, earlier this week. UEFA, the governing body of football for the European continent issued an advisory on Tuesday, informing about the decision to observe moment of silence at all EURO 2024 qualifying matches on the day. "UEFA can confirm that a moment of silence will be observed at all UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying matches tonight in memory of all the members of the European football family killed in recent days in Europe and Israel," read the advisory by UEFA. Before the kickoff, the stadium public address informed about the silence while the giant display screens carried the message. However, a few seconds into the silence, boos started ringing around the iconic stadium with some shouting 'free Palestine' slogans. According to some fans, the boos were in response to the statement by UEFA that had no mention of Palestine or the current grim humanitarian situation there. "They booed because the announcer said it was for Israeli and the Brussels attack and deaths, no mention of Palestine or the Palestinians getting slaughtered, do you think we don't see you? #FreePalestine Fans at Wembley boo over silence for victims of Brussels and Israel…," said one X user. Meanwhile, others slammed the fans for the move: "John Stones rightfully cheesed off that we can't hold a minute's silence because of some s***heads." England vs Italy England came into the contest, needing a point to qualify for the Euro 2024. The three lions, however, were off to a poor start when Scamacca raided the six-yard box and rifled the ball to the roof of the England net in the 15th minute. After going behind, Southgate's men increased the intensity with Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham starting the comeback. The 20-year-old arrived in the box before being tripped over by De Lorenzo as the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty. Captain Harry Kane stepped up and smashed one to the left side of the keeper to equalise. In the second half, it was Bellingham that busted across the halfway line before releasing Marcus Rashford who calmly dispatched the ball past a still Gianluigi Donnarumma. Afterwards, Kane applied the fishing touches in the 77th minute by collecting his second for the night and completing a comprehensive performance for the hosts. Jordan Henderson admits money was a 'contributing factor' in his move to Saudi Arabia

Nicolo Fagioli's season is all but over after the Italian Football Federation banned on Tuesday the Juventus and Italy midfielder for seven months for gambling offences.

In a statement the FIGC said that Fagioli had been given the ban for betting on football matches, an activity which is forbidden for professional footballers, after admitting his guilt and negotiating a plea bargain.

The FIGC said that Fagioli's sentence was officially 12 months but that five of those had been commuted into a "treatment plan" centred on combatting gambling addiction.

Fagioli, 22, has to take part in "at least 10 public meetings to be held within five months, at amateur sports associations and both local football federation and gambling addiction recovery centres" according to a FIGC programme.

The FIGC added that Fagioli's plea bargain would be terminated and that he would be subject to further disciplinary proceedings should he not adhere to that programme.

Fagioli has been a rising star of Italian football since returning to Juve last year following a loan spell at Cremonese, and has played once for his country.

However he won't be available for Juve, who have already suffered the scandal of France star Paul Pogba failing a doping test, until mid-May by which time there will only be two games left in the season.

Fagioli could have been banned for as long as three years had he not struck a deal with the FIGC's disciplinary authorities and shown that he was taking steps to combat an admitted gambling addiction.

His punishment is the first in a betting scandal which exploded while the Italian national team was preparing for two crucial Euro 2024 qualifiers with Malta and England.

<h2>Gambling scandal</h2>

The FIGC investigation is running parallel to a criminal probe into the use of illegal gambling platforms allegedly linked to organised crime.

Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo were released from the European champions' training camp last week after being questioned by criminal prosecutors for over two hours.

Zaniolo's lawyer Gianluca Tognozzi told the Gazzetta Dello Sport on Sunday that the Aston Villa forward has never gambled on football but that "it's possible he played card games like poker and blackjack on illegal platforms".

If Tognozzi's claim is true Zaniolo will not receive any ban from the FIGC but could be fined following the criminal probe.

On Tuesday Tonali's agent Giuseppe Riso admitted that the Newcastle midfielder had an "illness".

"Sandro is shaken up by the situation, but he has already started to fight back," Riso told Sky Sport.

"He's always been a fighter and now he's taken on his biggest challenge."

There is no indication as yet that any of the trio gambled on their own team's matches nor that they were involved in match fixing.

The news that Tonali and Zaniolo were being investigated was broken last week by disgraced Italian paparazzo Fabrizio Corona, who first claimed months ago that Fagioli had a gambling addiction.

Corona is a gossip specialist, hugely famous in Italy, who has spent time in prison for illegally obtaining photographs and blackmailing football clubs and players with them.

He also named Roma and Poland full-back Nicola Zalewski, who as yet is not being investigated by criminal prosecutors nor by the FIGC's disciplinary authorities.

ALSO READ | ODI World Cup 2023: WATCH - Australia pacer Mitchell Starc's TOE-CRUSHING yorker vs SL to dismiss batter Gambling scandal The FIGC investigation is running parallel to a criminal probe into the use of illegal gambling platforms allegedly linked to organised crime. "He's always been a fighter and now he's taken on his biggest challenge." There is no indication as yet that any of the trio gambled on their own team's matches nor that they were involved in match fixing. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has sustained&nbsp;a hamstring injury during national duty. Representing&nbsp;Nigeria in a friendly versus Saudi Arabia last week, the youngster suffered a hamstring issue and the development was confirmed by his club Napoli on Monday (Oct 16). Nigeria's friendly versus Saudi ended in a&nbsp;2-2 stalemate on Friday (Oct 13).

As a result, the 24-year-old forward withdrew from the game around the 55th minute at the Portimao stadium in Portugal. After the match, a thorough injury scan was carried out and, thus, prompted Osimhen to miss&nbsp;Nigeria's following friendly game -- where they faced Mozambique in Portugal.&nbsp;

According to Sky Sports Italia, it is estimated that Osimhen's injury could take a healing period of about four to six weeks. If this turns out to be true, the striker will miss a flurry of games for his Serie A club Napoli,&nbsp;including the club's trip to Hellas Verona on Saturday, the crucial Champions League match against Union Berlin on Oct&nbsp;24. In addition, he might sit out of Napoli's&nbsp;much-awaited face-off with Serie A leaders, AC Milan&nbsp;on Oct 29.

Osimhen has been in top form for Napoli. The Serie A club is at the fifth place and will feel his absence going forward. So far, Osimhen has scored&nbsp;six goals in the ongoing league season -- being Napoli's top-scorer -- and has made worthy contributions in every game. The club will closely monitor his recovery process.&nbsp;

France international Jean-Clair Todibo on Monday (Oct 16) apologised for laughing during a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the Israel-Hamas conflict and a murdered French teacher before a Euro 2024 qualifier last week.

"I had a nervous laugh in relation to this minute of silence but in no case did I make fun of the current situation," the 23-year-old Nice defender told journalists.

Cameras caught Todibo laughing during the tribute, which took before France's 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam last week, to the victims of the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The minute's silence also remembered a teacher killed last week in the northern French city of Arras in what the government called an Islamist terror attack.

Todibo, who is in the France team for Tuesday's friendly match against Scotland in Lille, said he had never intended to offend.

"I wanted to express myself today in relation to the extent of the situation and the interpretation of the situation which is quite crazy," he said before France's press conference in Lille.

"The context was unusual, we were among rival fans who had made certain jokes and I had this nervous laugh that came out. I wanted to apologise to all the people who I could have offended, that's the least I can do. Let there be no mistake about that."

"Some said that I laughed during this minute of silence because I was making fun of the death of a teacher, you should know that my mother has worked in National Education for 20 years and I have enormous respect for these people.

"I think I'm a boy with a very good education and with respect for people."

Before Todibo's apology, the national ethics council of the French Football Federation had sent a letter to the player to ask him to explain himself, reserving the right to refer the matter to the FFF disciplinary committee.

French footballer apologises for nervous laugh during minute's silence for Israel-Hamas conflict victims

Julian Nagelsmann got off to a winning start as Germany's coach on Saturday with his team securing a comfortable 3-1 win over the United States in a friendly.

Germany looked much improved from the team that had suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Japan last month, a result which saw Hansi Flick fired as coach after a run of five matches without a win.

The Euro 2024 hosts could ill-afford another surprise loss but they delivered a solid, well-rounded performance after recovering from a Christian Pulisic opener for the USA in the match at East Hartford, Connecticut.

Although Pascal Gross struck the post early on for Germany, who were missing midfielder Joshua Kimmich due to illness, the home side looked threatening with Pulisic and Tim Weah lively on the flanks.

Gio Reyna, who had gone through a bitter public row with coach Gregg Berhalter after the World Cup last year, returned to the starting lineup and provided some creative touches as the Americans started well.

Pulisic put the USA ahead in the 27th minute with a superb solo goal, cutting in from the left flank and then unleashing a fine drive into the far corner.

But that appeared to serve merely as a wake-up call for Germany with Ilkay Gundogan levelling in the 39th minute after good work from Leroy Sane.

Sane dribbled across the American defense, played a one-two with Gundogan and tried to go round American goalkeeper Matt Turner, who could only push the ball into the path of Gundogan, who had a simple conversion.

Germany went ahead in the 58th with center forward Niclas Fuellkrug slotting home after a perfectly weighted one-touch pass from Robin Gosens.

With the USA defense at disarray, Fuellkrug then set up the lively Jamal Musiala for a simple tap-in to make it 3-1 for the Euro 2024 hosts.

Sane should have made it four when he was set up nicely by Musiala, but the Bayern Munich winger fired his shot wide from a promising position.

Musiala's speed and skill were major highlights of the performance from Germany with Gundogan, as always, calm and intelligent in the center of midfield.

"Against a good team with a lot of speed, we took a very good step in terms of football," said 36-year-old Nagelsmann, who felt his team had been too rushed in the opening 45 minutes.

"In the second half, we also had a fast pace of play, but more patience and control. That was the difference,"

Berhalter's Americans missed the impact of injured central midfielder Tyler Adams and Pulisic noted their weakness at tha back.

"It hurts. We had a good start to the game. I felt like we hurt them in a lot of moments. But yeah, little mistakes here and there. Defensively, we can be a bit better," the AC Milan winger said.

"Obviously, we have to give them credit. They have some unbelievable players. They played a strong game."

Germany will face Mexico in Philadelphia on Tuesday, when the USA will take on Ghana in Nashville.

In what may come as heartbreaking news for Barcelona fans, the club is planning to hand Lionel Messi's iconic no. 10 jersey to a new signing who might arrive at Camp Nou during the January transfer window, according to a report in&nbsp;El Nacional.

18-year-old Vitor Roque, who is currently plying his trade in Serie A with Athletico Paranaense might be wearing the jersey as Barca look to bring him to the club, after signing him earlier this year.&nbsp;

The teenager signed on the dotted lines for Barca for a reported fee of $40 million and agreed to come to the club in 2024. While most had anticipated that Roque would arrive after the summer window, reports claim that Barca's Director of Football, Deco has been working behind the scenes to materialise the deal as soon as possible. Deco&nbsp;is set to meet Roque in Brazil and convey the club's intention to register him in January.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Roque not the first to wear the jersey&nbsp;</h2>

Although Roque is not the first player to wear the no. 10 jersey after Messi, it is still a big deal for Barca fans who continue to demand that the seven-time Ballon d'Or trophy winner's jersey be kept retired until he comes back for one last chance.&nbsp;

After Messi's departure from Barcelona, the jersey number&nbsp;was handed to Ansu Fati. The talented winger, however, could not live up to the expectations of the jersey, primarily due to injuries and remained sidelined for the major part of his stay at the Catalan club. Earlier this year, the Spaniard was shipped to Brighton and Hove Albion on a loan deal to play under Roberto De Zerbi to get back to full fitness and hone his skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Messi left his boyhood club in 2021&nbsp;after the Barcelona board could not work out a deal to manage his salary as well as keep the account books healthy. After the breakdown in talks, Messi signed up for Paris Saint-Germain where he had a rather tumultuous stay.&nbsp;

The two nations meet on Monday in Athens.

<h2>Ronaldo double</h2>

Unbeaten Belgium survived an Austria fightback in Vienna.

Dodi Lukebakio, with his first two international goals, and captain Romelu Lukaku with his ninth of the campaign, put Belgium 3-0 up after 58 minutes.

Konrad Laimer replied with a long-range drive. With Belgium reduced to 10 men when Amadou Onana collected a second yellow card, Arthur Theate handled in his own box with six minutes left.&nbsp;

Marcel Sabitzer converted the penalty to make it an anxious last few minutes for the Belgians.&nbsp;

But they held out to secure a third straight trip to the Euros. The Red Devils' last Euro qualifying loss was a 1-0 defeat in Wales in June 2015.

Austria remains seven points clear of idle Sweden, who have a game in hand.

Cristiano Ronaldo moved to 125 international goals as the Portuguese made it seven wins from seven matches in Group J.&nbsp;

They have 21 points which ensures them a top two finish.

Goncalo Ramos had opened the scoring for Portugal. Ronaldo then converted a penalty.

David Hancko's deflected strike gave Slovakia hope – the first goal Portugal had conceded in qualifying – but Ronaldo soon tapped in a Bruno Fernandes cross. Stanislav Lobotka's long-range strike made for a nervy finale but Portugal held on.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is having a great time, playing a lot of minutes and scoring a lot of goals for his club," said Portugal coach Roberto Martinez.

"He has a lot of experience with the national team and he's a reference point for young players."

Slovakia stayed second in the group, but the pursuers inched closer.

Third-place Luxembourg drew 1-1 in Iceland to close to two points behind Slovakia who visit the Duchy on Monday.

Bosnia and Herzegovina are&nbsp;a further two points back after beating Liechtenstein 2-0 with first-half goals from Amar Rahmanovic and Miroslav Stevanovic.

France, Belgium and Portugal all blinked with a Euro 2024 place in their grasps but clung on for one-goal victories on Friday night which made them the first sides to qualify for next year's tournament. Belgium led by three goals in Vienna and won 3-2 with 10 men to ensure a top-two finish in Group F and a ticket to the finals in Germany. France led by two Kylian Mbappe goals in Amsterdam and beat the depleted Dutch 2-1. In Amsterdam, Mbappe leapt to hook home a volley after seven minutes and then added a second eight minutes into the second half with a sumptuous curler. It was his 42nd international goal, overtaking French legend Michel Platini and putting him fourth in the all-time list. Quilindschy Hartman replied on his Dutch debut but Mbappe almost clinched his hat-trick, when his late drive hit the crossbar. "We mustn't get carried away, but we must appreciate and not trivialise things," said France coach Didier Deschamps. Football: France, Belgium and Portugal qualify for Euro 2024 with last gasp wins

Shortly after securing a Euro 2024 berth for his national team, Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has set ambitious goals for his future. Shortly after securing a Euro 2024 berth for his national team, Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has set ambitious goals for his future. The talismanic striker rose to the occasion on Friday (Oct 13) evening as he scored a brace in his side's 3-2 win against Slovakia, taking his goal tally with the national team to 125. After the match, it was revealed that Jorge Nuno Pinto, the president of FC Porto made a bet with Ronaldo to score 1,000 goals and the forward immediately accepted the challenge. "It will be quite difficult, but it’s about my mindset and my motivation. If, physically, my legs treat me as well as I treat them...We'll see, these are small steps. To get to 1,000, you first have to get to 900. I think I will get there," he said during the conversation. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who currently has 857 career goals said it was about enjoying the game and taking small steps at a time if he was to realise his ambitions. "It's about continuing. These are small steps that motivate me to continue playing. I feel very happy about that," said Ronaldo. "For the national team, I wanted to beat the record for goals and international caps. But I just want to keep enjoying it. I don't follow the records; they are the ones that follow me." Also read | Cristiano Ronaldo could make his WWE debut ‘in some capacity’ at Crown Jewel show – Reports Ronaldo's international career revival Ronaldo enjoying his football with the national team comes after a turbulent time during former manager Fernando Santos' tenure. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ronaldo was routinely benched by Santos as the Portuguese team made a timid quarterfinal exit at the marquee event. Images and videos of Ronaldo sobbing and walking off the pitch after the loss suggested it was the end of the road for the greatest Portuguese footballer. However, after Santos' departure and the appointment of former Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, Ronaldo's international career has got a second wing. Given his fitness and desire to represent the country, it looks certain that Ronaldo will give one last shot at the European championship next year. He has already won Euro 2016 and a Nations League trophy with the Selecao and another trophy next year, perhaps, might be the best way for him to bid adieu at the world stage. Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham says the sport's authorities may examine whether VAR decisions could be broadcast live.

The Premier League was rocked by the recent VAR blunder that saw Liverpool's Luis Diaz wrongly denied what would have been the opening goal in their 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.

The error was caused by miscommunication between the VAR operator and the on-pitch officials, sparking calls for such conversations to be played during television broadcasts in future.

Live broadcasts of conversations between officials and VAR operators is currently prohibited under football's laws.

But Bullingham, who is a director at the International Football Association Board (IFAB) which has the power to change the game's laws, said the organisation had discussed the subject.

"Generally there is a split in the room over that, and quite often it is between the marketing and commercial people and the referees," he said.

"Our point of view, from the marketing and commercial perspective, would normally be that transparency is a really good thing, and we want fans to have the maximum experience."

Bullingham said an ongoing FIFA trial where referees announce and explain the outcome of an on-field review is a "step in the right direction".

"My personal point of view is I do think (live audio) will continue to be a question over time, because the greater transparency shows how difficult the referee's job is, and it has worked in other sport," he said.

"There is an understandable nervousness from others that the referee's job is hard enough as it is. In a tournament you have referees with multiple languages, so it is not as straightforward as some might suggest.

"So I think we are taking a step in the right direction with announcing the decision and explaining why it has been reached. Let's see if that leads to further progression."

Football: VAR decisions could be broadcast live says FA chief Mark Bullingham

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has admitted it is a bit 'strange' to watch his previous team, Tottenham Hotspur in action and being at the top of the Premier League table.&nbsp;

Lauding new manager Ange Postecoglou, Kane said the team spirit was high at the club and fans were buying into the Australian gaffer's version.&nbsp;

“The manager is doing great for them with the way they're playing, the fans are right behind the team and it's definitely what they needed after the last few years," said&nbsp;Postecoglu.&nbsp;

Kane said he was keeping a close eye on the proceedings in the Premier League, adding,&nbsp;"there's still a long way to go, but as the manager said, there's no reason why the fans shouldn't be excited and happy with the way things are going. Hopefully, they can continue".&nbsp;

Kane, who is set to captain England against Australia at Wembley on Friday&nbsp;asserted that despite Spurs' excellent start to the campaign, he doesn't lament his move to German titleholders.&nbsp;

"I was there for so long and all my friends are still there, even the coaches and staff, so sometimes it's a little bit strange. But in football and life, when you go onto a new adventure, you're focused and attention is on that."

<h2>Kane's move to Germany&nbsp;</h2>

Having been in Germany for a few months now, Kane is yet to find a house and has made rather slow progress in learning the language. However, Kane added that it was because his focus was on performing for his new side.&nbsp;

"I'm trying to find houses, learn the language, get to know my new team and staff at Bayern Munich. Your attention just gets taken away. Maybe at first, it was strange to see them playing and me not being there. I have got to put all my attention on Bayern Munich and to make us as successful as possible. I am here, I am excited and it will always be a decision I never regret. I’m proud to have started the way I have.”

Kane ended his 19-year association with boyhood club Spurs earlier this summer after securing a move to Bayern for a record $126 million fee. The Englishman's arrival to Bavaria has been superb, to say the least as he has&nbsp;amassed nine goals and five assists in 10 matches for Bayern across competitions.&nbsp;

Barcelona's money problems have been well-documented over the years. The club has been under intense scrutiny for its finances and now a new report has claimed that the Catalan club owes more than $212 million in transfer fees to various clubs such as Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Leeds United. According to a report in ARA, although Barcelona have found ways to secure the transfer deals, they still owe considerable debt to the clubs. The La Liga champions are expected to shell out just under $95 million over the next 12 months but will still be left with $127 million in payout to Leeds, City, Bayern and Sevilla beyond that point. The report added that Barcelona owe $25 million to Leeds for Raphinha, $14 million to City for Ferran Torres and $11 million to Bayern for Lewandowski. They also need to find $38 million to pay for Jules Kounde's transfer from Sevilla. Also read | Lionel Messi’s remarriage with Barcelona still a possibility: Reports Despite a handful of transfers over the summer transfer window, Barcelona are still looking for a defensive midfielder and two fullbacks. Joao Cancelo and Jao Felix, are both on loan deals and their performances have given a second wing to the team but owing to their outrageous transfer fees, Barcelona is bound to enter the market next year. However, plugging the gaps might be a difficult task as La Liga last month slashed Barcelona's spending cap by $429 million for the new season, down to $286 million. Only Sevilla, Villareal and Deportovo Alaves are the other La Liga clubs, operating at a lower cap than Barcelona. The problems were compounded after reports claimed that the club was under investigation for suspected "active bribery" as part of a probe into suspected corruption spanning two decades at the refereeing committee. In March, prosecutors filed a complaint over alleged payments of more than 7.3 million euros ($7.8 million) over 17 years to firms owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, who was vice-president of the RFEF's refereeing committee from 1993 to 2018. Many on social media platforms alleged that Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo showed his support towards Palestine by waving its flag on the field amid the nation's ongoing conflict with Israel. Videos and pictures started circulating, on Sunday (Oct&nbsp;8), which claimed that the footballer was none other than Ronaldo who openly supported Palestine by waving its flag on the field.&nbsp;

One such viral tweet read: "Star footballer Christiano Ronaldo is supporting Palestine by raising their flag after victory".&nbsp;

The Palestinian football team has pulled out of a tournament in Malaysia, amid the deteriorating situation between Israel and Hamas terrorists. The team has not flown to the southeast nation where it was supposed to play in the Merdeka Cup friendly tournament in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. As it stands, the opening match scheduled against Tajikistan on Friday (Oct 13) has been cancelled, according to the Malaysian Football Association. "The Palestinian team had to withdraw from participating...because they could not fly to Kuala Lumpur due to the tense situation...at the moment," read the statement by the association. With Palestine out, the tournament will go ahead with only three teams. While Tajikistan will get a bye to the final, Malaysia and India will square up against each other for a spot in the title decider. Notably, the historic tournament is held to celebrate Malaysia's Independence Day. It was set to make a triumphant return after a decade-old hiatus but the situation has thrown a monkey wrench in the plans. With no scope for improvement in the situation in the coming days, the Palestinian team's participation in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers remains in doubt as well. The team is scheduled to play against Australia and Lebanon next month. Additionally, it has also qualified for the regional Asian Cup tournament in Qatar, which begins in January. UEFA postpones matches in Israel Notably, the Palestinian football team deciding to skip footballing events comes a day after UEFA announced it was postponing all matches in Israel, at least for the next fortnight. The European football governing body said Israel's Euro 2024 qualifier against Switzerland on Thursday, scheduled to take place at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium, is among matches postponed "in light of the current security situation". Apart from the senior team's match, the Under-21 qualifiers involving Israel, Estonia and Germany have been postponed while the Under-17 matches involving Israel, Belgium, Gibraltar and Wales have been pushed as well. Football: UEFA confirms UK, Ireland as hosts for Euro 2028; Turkey, Italy to host in 2032

Barcelona came back from two goals down to share a thrilling 2-2 draw with Granada but lost ground in the La Liga title race on Sunday.

Bryan Zaragoza sent the hosts two goals ahead but Lamine Yamal and Sergi Roberto's goals preserved the champions' record as the only unbeaten team in La Liga.

However, the Catalans are now third and sit three points behind leaders Real Madrid, and one behind neighbours Girona, who both won on Saturday.

Zaragoza struck twice in the first half, breaking the deadlock after only 17 seconds -- the fastest goal Barcelona have conceded in the 21st century.

Yamal pulled Barcelona back into the game just before half-time, becoming La Liga's youngest ever goalscorer in the process at 16 years and 87 days. Xavi Hernandez's side levelled with three minutes remaining when substitute Sergi Roberto turned home, but they could not find a late winner in a high-octane finale.

It was the third comeback they have made in recent weeks, beating Celta Vigo from two goals down and twice falling behind at Mallorca in another 2-2 draw.

"I think we totally dominated, we created chances, we deserved more, but (we drew) because of our own mistakes, we can't start off in that way," Xavi told DAZN. "We take away a point, which for us, is not enough."

Barcelona's night was also marred by a knee injury to Jules Kounde, with the Catalans already tending to Robert Lewandowski, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Raphinha in the treatment room.

Xavi deployed Ferran Torres as a false nine to replace Lewandowski, while he handed Fermin Lopez his first start for the club in midfield.

The coach left Oriol Romeu on the bench, starting without a pure defensive midfielder and dividing the role up between Ilkay Gundogan and Gavi.

The latter turned into trouble immediately, with Granada stealing the ball from the young midfielder in the build-up to the first goal.

Lucas Boye fed Zaragoza, who fired across Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who might have done more to keep the shot from finding the bottom corner, although the ball appeared to bobble before passing the Barcelona goalkeeper.

Gavi forced a save at the other end and Joao Felix fired wide as Barcelona hunted for the equaliser.

Zaragoza doubled the hosts' lead at the Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium with a brilliant individual goal, leaving Kounde wobbling before finishing sublimely with the outside of his boot into the top corner.

"He's a player who is not easy to stop when he's sprinting," admitted Xavi.

<h2>- Record breaker -</h2>

Barcelona found a route back into the match in first-half stoppage time when Felix prodded the ball into Yamal's path just a couple of yards out and he rolled home to break yet another record.

However, there was no time for Spain's youngest ever player and goalscorer, to celebrate. Barcelona sought the equaliser, with Gundogan forcing a good stop from Andre Ferreira and Ronald Araujo hammering inches wide.

Eventually it came through Sergi Roberto, who turned home Alejandro Balde's low cross, while Granada complained about a collision earlier in the move they wanted called as a foul.

Zaragoza almost claimed his hat-trick as the hosts responded furiously, but he crashed a shot off the post as the game flew end-to-end.

Felix headed in what he thought was the winner and Xavi leapt for joy on the touchline, but Ferran Torres, who did not touch the ball yet was ruled to be interfering with play, was offside.

"The feeling is that just as easily as they ruled it out, they could have given it ... Ferran is not interfering with anyone," said Xavi.

Granada coach Paco Lopez said he was proud of his team and that he hoped 22-year-old winger Zaragoza would keep his feet on the ground.

"I congratulate my team and my players, I can't ask for more from them," Lopez told DAZN. "We have to keep cool heads with (Zaragoza), because he's got out of the ordinary talent but has to work hard."

The draw keeps Granada 19th, two points from safety.

La Liga: Lamine Yamal creates history but Barcelona lose ground in title race despite draw against Granada

After four failed bids in the recent past, Turkey is finally set to be awarded the hosting rights for a major international football tournament this week when UEFA decides where Euro 2032 will be staged. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has long dreamt of hosting one of the world's most prestigious sporting events.

Now he is set to finally get the chance, despite the country being mired in an economic crisis with the annual inflation rate hovering near 60 percent.

On Tuesday, UEFA's executive committee meets to announce the hosts for the 2028 and 2032 European Championships.

Turkey withdrew its bid to host in 2028 in order to focus all its effort on a united proposal with Italy to stage the tournament four years later.

That bid has no rivals.

Erdogan is not feigning an interest in what is Turkey's most popular sport -- in his younger years he played at semi-professional level and he is an avowed supporter of Fenerbahce, the Istanbul giants who are one of the country's biggest clubs.

Winning the right to host the biggest sporting event in Europe would be one of the crowning moments of his time in power.

It would also be highly symbolic in political terms.

"In modern times, sport has always been perceived as a means for Turkey to forge its own legitimacy and compete equally with the rest of the western world," says Daghan Irak, a lecturer in media communication at the University of Huddersfield in England.

"Erdogan has not diverted from that historic strategy."

Erdogan became prime minister at the end of 2002, at the same time Turkey's joint bid with Greece -- during a period of improving relations between the two countries -- to host Euro 2008 failed.

UEFA awarded that tournament to Austria and Switzerland.

Turkey then went out on its own in a bid to host Euro 2012, only to miss out to a joint Ukraine-Poland candidacy, while in 2016 it lost out to France.

<h2>- Human rights concerns -</h2>

They then missed out to Germany for Euro 2024, with UEFA's evaluation of the bid highlighting concerns about the country's "lack of an action plan in the area of human rights".

After four failed attempts, and having joined forces with Italy, the lack of any rival contenders means Turkey is now sure to get its chance.

That is despite human rights concerns still lingering following Erdogan's re-election as President in May -- he has not shown any clemency towards, or announced an amnesty for, tens of thousands of political opponents who have been imprisoned.

Turkey's Court of Cassation recently upheld a sentence of life imprisonment for Osman Kavala, a benefactor and philanthropist accused of financing anti-government protests in 2013.

Kavala will serve his sentence in isolation and has no possibility of early release.

"Unfortunately, these actions continue to undermine Turkey's prospects of joining the EU," said Nacho Sanchez Amor, the European Parliament's rapporteur on Turkey.

Previous Turkish bids have also fallen down due to questions about stadiums in the country.

However, that is no longer a problem according to Bagis Erten, a contributor to Socrates magazine who teaches sports communication at Kadir Has University in Istanbul.

"If the AKP (the ruling party since 2002) know how to do one thing, it is build," he says.

"They love that! We really have a lot of good stadiums now."

Erten cites examples in medium-sized cities like Trabzon, on the Black Sea, Konya and Eskisehir in Central Anatolia, and Izmir, the country's third-largest city, situated on the Aegean Sea coast.

"Our stadiums are now better prepared than in a lot of other countries," he adds. He believes Turkey could not bid to host a global event like the Olympics, "but it is absolutely in a position to host the Euro, in economic and security terms as well as for it's footballing culture and the crowds that go to matches".

In June it hosted the UEFA Champions League final, when Manchester City beat Inter Milan at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

"Turkey is ready now," Erten insists.

And in terms of integration into Europe, Irak adds, "it is much easier for Erdogan's Turkey to organise an international football tournament than to respect the verdicts of the European Court of Human Rights".

After four failed attempts Turkey set to realise long-term goal with bid to host Euro 2032

Fresh off the high of beating treble winners Manchester City, Arsenal have been seemingly dealt a blow as William Saliba pulled out of the France squad for international duty.

Fresh off the high of beating treble winners Manchester City, Arsenal have been seemingly dealt a blow as William Saliba pulled out of the France squad for international duty. The France national team confirmed the defender's absence, stating he was nursing a toe injury and that he will be replaced by Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo. "William Saliba is not able to participate in the gathering of the French team. The Arsenal defender suffers from pain in his right big toe. He will remain available to his club to treat this chronic injury," read the statement. "After speaking with Dr Franck Le Gall, the French team doctor, Didier Deschamps noted William Saliba’s withdrawal and decided to replace him with Jean-Clair Todibo. "The latter is expected at Clairefontaine on Monday at noon, like all the selected players." Saliba was instrumental in his side's 1-0 win against City on Sunday (October 8) in front of a boisterous Emirates crowd. The tall centre-back managed to keep City's goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland quiet and to the extent that the Norweigian did not have a shot on target throughout the game. The victory propelled Arsenal to the top of the points table alongside London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The club will now return to action after the international break and face a resurgent Chelsea. With over a week to go for the encounter, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta would hope that his premier defender gets back to full fitness. Saliba - Arsenal's mainstay Ever since the last season, Saliba has been pivotal to Arsenal's chances in the league. In the 27 league games that Saliba started during the title charge, he helped Arsenal keep a clean sheet in 11 of them. However, post his injury, the London-based team could only keep two clean sheets in nine games as Manchester City came from behind to secure a third consecutive title. Last week, Saliba reflected on the injury that forced him to sit out the business end of the last season, which eventually cost his team the title. “Of course, it was really painful because I watched my team play every game, the most important of the season, and I was not able to play. Of course, it hurt me. Of course, I could have helped my team to maybe win the Premier League but we never know," said Saliba. Also read | 'It was really painful...': William Saliba on Arsenal slipping up in title race last season "It was a good experience because we were first for all the season and at the end we finished second. Every game is so important, we try to win every game to win the league. Injuries are part of football and hopefully I won’t be injured.” While Saliba has become a mainstay in the Arsenal squad, he is yet to become a first pick for Deschamps. The likes of Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate are seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

While thousands of missiles were fired that overwhelmed Israel's state-of-the-art Iron Dome system, a faction of ground fighters illegally entered Israel and kidnapped, raped and slaughtered civilians, before retreating. Since the attack, the fighting has only escalated as Israel has vowed to return the favour by flattening the strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has predicted a “long and difficult war”, with reports claiming that Jerusalem may try to take full control of Gaza for the first time since it unilaterally withdrew from the territory in 2005. UEFA postpones matches in Israel amid deteriorating situation

After a lengthy absence from the game, Lionel Messi turned up in Inter Miami colours on Saturday (October 7) as his side took on FC Cincinnati, in a quest to retain playoff hopes. Although Inter Miami lost the game 1-0, a fan had a memorable moment, albeit in a controversial manner.&nbsp;

Messi was substituted onto the field after half-time and on a rare occasion, could not guide his team to the victory shores. After the match, a youngster evading security managed to saunter across the pitch to Messi.&nbsp;However, before the kid could reach the Argentine, Messi's personal bodyguard, Yassine Chueko, made famous by the internet, halted him in the tracks.&nbsp;

Chueko, a former Navy Seal and MMA competitor, reportedly handpicked by Inter Miami owner David Beckham, grabbed the kid and started to escort him out of the pitch. However, after a few seconds, upon talking to the kid, he turned around and&nbsp;took the intruder to Messi&nbsp;and stood by while the young man had his few seconds of glory, alongside the World Cup winner.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi could make his return to Major League Soccer action on Saturday with the Argentine hoping to give a boost to Inter Miami's flagging playoff hopes. Messi has played just 37 minutes for his club since September 3 having returned with an injury from international duty with Argentina last month.

His absence has been sorely felt, with Miami winless in their last three league games and losing the US Open Cup final to Houston.

Miami crashed to a 4-1 defeat to Chicago on Wednesday without the seven-times Ballon d'Or winner but the following day he was named in Argentina's squad for their upcoming South American World Cup qualifiers.

That prompted speculation that he might be in contention to face Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati on Saturday and the optimism increased after he trained on Thursday and Friday.

But in keeping with the club's approach throughout the injury saga, there was no clue from assistant coach Javier Morales about whether Messi would start.

"It’s more of the same. We have to evaluate him day by day. He trained yesterday, he will train today, and afterwards we will surely make a decision. But every day he is doing better," he told reporters.

If Miami are to achieve what is now an unlikely goal of extending their season into the playoffs, they will surely need Messi to be on the field.

Gerardo Martino's side are next to bottom of the Eastern Conference, five points behind the last playoff spot, ninth place, with three games remaining.

Although Miami have at least a game in hand on all but one of their rivals for that spot, their destiny is no longer in their own hands and they need other results to fall in their favor.

Cincinnati are the top ranked team in MLS having already won the Supporters' Shield for the best regular season record and with it the top seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Having achieved their target, they rested several key players for Wednesday's game against New York Red Bulls, suffering a 2-1 home defeat.

But with the international break coming up coach Pat Noonan will have to decide whether or not to recall his starters for the game in Fort Lauderdale.

"You have to... take what’s in the best interest of the individual player and their health so that we can go through the stretch with as many healthy bodies as possible," he said after the Red Bulls game.

Saturday is the penultimate round of action for most teams in MLS with a few playoff spots still up for grabs and the chance for a top four finish and home field advantage in the first round of the post-season another key factor.

Two spots remain open in the East with three still to be claimed in the West.

In this season's format, the eighth placed team in each conference will host a single game wildcard match against the ninth finisher.

The winners will then go into round one which features best of three series. The top four teams have home field advantage for the first and -- if needed -- third games.

Then the conference semi-finals, finals and MLS Cup itself are all single games.
