German sports goods manufacturing giant Adidas has unveiled a high-tech football that will be used in next year's European Championship and help officials with more accurate offside decisions. Alongside the European football governing body UEFA, Adidas launched the football, named “Fussballliebe,” the German word for “love of football,” in Berlin on Wednesday (Nov 15). How does the technology inside the ball work? The ball features the Adidas 'connected ball technology' for the first time at a UEFA Euro. The ball has a chip fixed on the gyroscope inside which sends data 500 times per second to record the point at which it is kicked. The kick point is essential in an offside call and the technology in the ball helps officials make the decision using multiple camera angles to create 3D visualisations that illustrate player movement. Adidas claims that the tech significantly reduces the time taken for a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) offside decision. It will now take just 25 seconds to make a call since there will be no need to manually draw lines. UEFA added that the outer shell of the ball is supported within it by the CTR-CORE which is designed for accuracy and consistency whilst retaining maximum shape. "We are, as always, confident that Adidas' Fussballliebe will mark another stride in our shared dedication to excellence," said Zvonimir Boban, UEFA technical director and chief of football during the unveiling. Notably, the 'connected ball technology' was also used at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year when the official match ball, named Al Rihla, incorporated the same. While the ball will help in reducing errors from the game, its environmental impact during the manufacturing process will also be limited. According to Adidas, the ball is made with at least 20 per cent recycled content to avoid the larger environmental impact of producing virgin content. Adidas has also pledged one per cent of net sales of the ball to the Common Goal soccer charity created by former Spain midfielder Juan Mata. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has been appointed as the new head coach of the United States in a record deal that will make her the world's highest paid women's football coach, the United States Soccer Federation said Tuesday.

Hayes, 47, revealed earlier this month she plans to leave Chelsea at the end of the season after a trophy-laden spell in charge of the English club.

"This is a huge honor to be given the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in world football history," Hayes said in a USSF statement confirming her appointment.

US Soccer did not divulge details of Hayes' contract, but said she would become the "highest paid women's soccer in the world".

ESPN, citing a source with knowledge of the contract negotiations, reported that Hayes' deal would run through 2027 and would see her earn a salary that was "close if not equal" to the $1.6 million earned by US men's football coach Gregg Berhalter.

Hayes will see out her duties with Chelsea in the WSL and then formally take up her US role next year, two months before the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where the Americans will be looking to recapture the gold medal they last won in 2012.

Hayes is one of the most respected figures in the world of women's football, leading Chelsea to six WSL titles, five FA Cups and two league cups as well as other trophies. In 2021, she led Chelsea to the final of the women's Champions League and was named FIFA's women's coach of the year.

The English coach, who started her coaching career in women's club football in the United States in 2001 after a promising playing career was cut short by injury, will now be handed the task of returning the USA to the pinnacle of women's football.

<h2>'I've lived it'</h2>

The US women have dominated women's international football for much of the past decade, winning back-to-back World Cups in 2015 and 2019.

However the Americans were bundled out of the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in August in the last 16 -- the team's worst ever showing at a World Cup.

Hayes said her appointment to the US job was the realisation of a lifelong dream, adding that the job was simply impossible to turn down.

"I've dreamed about doing this job from my days as a coach in my early twenties," Hayes said. "You can't turn the US Women's National Team down."

US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker said Hayes was chosen after the federation worked through "a large list" of candidates.

"We had a group of excellent coaches and leaders to consider, but we felt strongly that Emma was the best person and coach to take the US Women's National Team forward," Crocker said.

Hayes, who started her coaching career as a relative unknown with the Long Island Lady Riders in 2001, before subsequent stints with the Iona Gaels college team and Chicago Red Stars, said her formative years in the US had given her a solid grasp of the importance of the US women's team.

"I understand how important the team is to people and culture of the United States," she said. "I've lived it.

"I remember being a young coach working my way up through the system in the US and watching all those young girls aspire to play on the US Women's National Team.

"For me, the honor of building on that legacy is part of my motivation, no question."

Thousands of people lined the streets of Manchester on Monday (Nov 13) to pay their final respects to Manchester United and England great Bobby Charlton, who died last month at the age of 86. The 1966 World Cup winner, widely regarded as one of England's greatest players, died after an accidental fall at his care home on October 21. Crowds clapped warmly and held banners as the funeral cortege drove past United's Old Trafford ground on its way to a private funeral service at Manchester Cathedral. The hearse passed the famous "United Trinity" statue immortalising Charlton, Denis Law and George Best and through a guard of honour made up of members of the club's Under-18 and Under-21 squads. There were numerous black-and-white photographs depicting Charlton's long and illustrious career as a player and then as a director at the club. Around 1,000 guests including former United manager Alex Ferguson, England boss Gareth Southgate and Prince William, the Football Association president, arrived for the private funeral service, which started at 1400 GMT, along with current and former players. Former United captain Bryan Robson, speaking outside the cathedral, told the BBC: "For a player to win the World Cup, win the Champions League and have such a long and successful career you've got to be a fantastic player to be able to achieve that. "But Sir Bob wasn't just a great player, he was a great person and had time for everybody." Former teammate Alex Stepney said Charlton remained humble despite his success. "Nothing was over his head or anything like that, it was all about playing for Manchester United," he said. "Even on international duty it was about winning and that was what Bobby Charlton was all about. A humble guy, a great family man. It never went to his head." He won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals. He also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968, a decade after he survived an air crash in Munich, in which eight of his teammates were killed. Charlton returned to the club with which he had made his name as a director in 1984 and remained a major figure there until his later years. In 2020, it was announced he had been diagnosed with dementia and as the disease took hold he stopped attending matches at Old Trafford. Ferguson, who guided the club back to the pinnacle of European football, described the former midfielder as a "tower of strength" during his 26-year spell as manager. In a eulogy published in the matchday programme ahead of the derby against Manchester City, Ferguson wrote: "People loved him because of all those thunderbolt goals, but it was more than that. My dad used to say that humility in success is a sign of greatness, and that was Bobby. "He never used to boast about his own achievements, it was always about the team and the club."

Manchester City moved a point clear at the top of the Premier League on Sunday after a thrilling 4-4 draw at Chelsea with Erling Haaland scoring twice only for former City man Cole Palmer to level the match from the penalty spot in added time.

City scored first when Spanish defender Marc Cucurella pulled Haaland's shirt to concede a VAR-checked penalty which the Norwegian coolly converted in the 24th minute sending Robert Sanchez the wrong way.

Five minutes later Chelsea's 39-year-old Brazilian defender Thiago Silva headed the ball into the net from a Conor Gallagher corner and it was all square. It was the first time Chelsea had scored against Manchester City since they beat them in the 2021 Champions League final.

They suffered six defeats in a row, four in the league and two in cup competitions.

Former City forward Raheem Sterling, busy and bustling all game, tapped in after a Josko Gvardiol error in defence allowed Reece James to cross in the 37th minute. Sterling refused to celebrate but Stamford Bridge erupted.

Chelsea's lead lasted less than 10 minutes before defender Manuel Akanji, who had pushed forward throughout the half, rose to head City's equaliser in first-half injury time.

The towering Haaland bundled in his second -- his 13th Premier League goal of the season -- a minute after the restart to put City ahead.

But the champions had no time to relax in the end-to-end contest and in the 67th minute of a breathless second half, the home side equalised through Nicolas Jackson.

Rodri's 86th-minute strike, that took a big deflection off Thiago Silva, put the champions ahead again.

The visitors might have thought they had the three points in the bag, only for them to concede a 94th-minute penalty, when Ruben Dias caught substitute Armando Broja’s legs in the penalty box.

Up stepped Manchester City’s academy graduate Palmer to show no nerves as he blasted the penalty home against his former club. It was the 21-year-old’s fourth Chelsea penalty in four attempts.

"Very strange the first time I have played against City," Palmer told Sky Sports. "I have the upmost respect for the club I spent 15 years at and it is nice to see some friends."

Scorer Rodri said his side were exhausted.

"The level of the Chelsea team has risen and it was not our best performance today. Individually we needed to do a bit more ourselves - to concede four goals is not normal for us," he told Sky.

The result moved City clear of Liverpool with 28 points from 12 games. Chelsea, who have shown stuttering form this season, move up a place to 10th on 16 points.

Houston beat Real Salt Lake on penalties to advance in Major League Soccer playoffs

A clinical Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain won 3-0 at high-flying Reims on Saturday to move to the top of the Ligue 1 table, although coach Luis Enrique was still not satisfied with the France captain's performance.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the third minute in Champagne country and then netted twice more in the second half to give PSG a win which moved the reigning champions to the summit a point above Nice, who drew at Montpellier on Friday.

PSG were also grateful to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma who denied Reims a route back into the game with a string of superb saves, as Luis Enrique's team recovered from their midweek Champions League loss to AC Milan.

Mbappe is Ligue 1's leading scorer with 13 goals in 11 appearances this season, with the France captain also having netted twice in European competition.

Yet his coach was not entirely delighted with his superstar's display.

"We know Kylian Mbappe's worth, but he can do better. I want even more from him," the Spaniard said.

"He is one of the world's best players, but he still has a lot of room to get better. I don't want him to rest on his laurels."

Mbappe had earlier indicated that he was not completely pleased with his own game as he spoke to broadcaster Amazon Prime.

"In all modesty I don't need to be playing well to score goals, but I want to do both, score goals and play well. That is my objective, to always help the team as well as I can," Mbappe said.

Asked about bouncing back from the setback in Milan, Mbappe added: "It is a different competition and all we wanted to do was win. Nice drew and we wanted to take top spot. It's job done and we are happy with that."

"We will have time to think about the Champions League but Ligue 1 is a different competition and that means a different mindset and a different way of playing."

That 2-1 defeat in Milan on Tuesday left PSG's hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout phase in the balance with two group games still to go, but they do finally appear to have found their rhythm domestically after a stuttering start to the campaign.

<h2>Donnarumma in top form</h2>

Luis Enrique's team were targeting a fifth straight victory in Ligue 1 and they went ahead almost from the word go as Mbappe met Ousmane Dembele's cross from the right with a superb side-foot volley low across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

Reims were denied an equaliser as a fine goal by Japanese international Junya Ito was disallowed for offside, and the same player was later denied by Donnarumma who produced a superb reaction save from Amir Richardson before the interval.

The PSG side missing the suspended Achraf Hakimi and Randal Kolo Muani were again grateful to Donnarumma when the Italian repelled a Marshall Munetsi header on 56 minutes, and three minutes later they went 2-0 up.

Mbappe evaded his marker with a brilliant darting run to the back post where he converted a perfect assist rolled across the face of goal by Carlos Soler.

Donnarumma was at it again as he once more denied Zimbabwe midfielder Munetsi, before Mbappe finished off a cutback from substitute Bradley Barcola to make it 3-0 with eight minutes left.

Nice are still unbeaten this season after their stalemate on Friday in Montpellier, and they have still not been behind in a single game this season.

Reims remain in fourth place, while third-placed Monaco missed the chance to leapfrog Nice in the table as they drew 0-0 away to Le Havre in Saturday's late match.

Monaco were fortunate to escape with a point, however, as Le Havre's Samuel Grandsir had a penalty saved in the 10th minute of added time at the end of the game.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the third minute in Champagne country and then netted twice more in the second half to give PSG a win which moved the reigning champions to the summit a point above Nice, who drew at Montpellier on Friday. Also Read: Tennis veteran Andy Murray part ways with long-time coach Ivan Lendl for third time PSG were also grateful to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma who denied Reims a route back into the game with a string of superb saves, as Luis Enrique's team recovered from their midweek Champions League loss to AC Milan. I don't want him to rest on his laurels." Mbappe had earlier indicated that he was not completely pleased with his own game as he spoke to broadcaster Amazon Prime. It's job done and we are happy with that." "We will have time to think about the Champions League but Ligue 1 is a different competition and that means a different mindset and a different way of playing." That 2-1 defeat in Milan on Tuesday left PSG's hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout phase in the balance with two group games still to go, but they do finally appear to have found their rhythm domestically after a stuttering start to the campaign. Donnarumma in top form Luis Enrique's team were targeting a fifth straight victory in Ligue 1 and they went ahead almost from the word go as Mbappe met Ousmane Dembele's cross from the right with a superb side-foot volley low across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez insisted on Saturday his club were in a dip but not falling into crisis and said president Joan Laporta had full confidence in his project. The Spanish champions have played poorly in recent weeks and fell to an embarrassing 1-0 defeat by Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday in Hamburg.

Despite the loss, Barcelona are still joint group leaders and expected to qualify for the knock-out phases, and are third in La Liga.

The Catalans lost at home to Real Madrid in the Clasico on October 28 and scraped a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad last weekend, despite a drab performance.

VAR was supposed to help cut out egregious and costly refereeing mistakes but the technology has come under heavy fire from Premier League managers who have lost faith in the system.&nbsp;

The video assistant referee was introduced in the 2019/20 season for "clear and obvious errors" or "serious missed incidents" in specific situations.

The promise was that it would lead to "more correct and fairer judgements", even though the Premier League conceded that 100 percent accuracy was impossible.

Anthony Gordon's second-half goal was checked for three separate VAR offences but survived them all to earn Newcastle the three points.

"We didn't deserve to lose the match," Arteta told Sky Sports. "We lost the match because of the clear and obvious decisions. It's embarrassing. A disgrace."

VAR inconsistencies prompt call for overhaul in Premier League

Bengaluru FC skipper Sunil Chhetri has commended the Indian Super League (ISL) for taking football to the length and breadth of the country, hailing the competition for sprouting hopes amongst youngsters across the nation. The 39-year-old has been associated with the ISL since 2015, having represented Bengaluru FC from the 2017-18 campaign onwards. He won the ISL title with the Blues in 2018-19 and is second in the list of the all-time top goal-scorers in the league history with 58 strikes to his name.

Speaking on Curly Tales, Chhetri mentioned that talent identification across different sports at a ripe age is essential for India to become a sporting superpower.

“A lot of things went well for us in the last 10 years, but the biggest was the ISL. What it did was, it got the game to every nook and corner of the country. When they give a kid that hope, it is different. That is the biggest thing that the ISL has done. It has given hope and visibility (to the sport) throughout the country,” Chhetri said.

Whilst 51 of his goals have come for Bengaluru, the striker also represented Mumbai City FC on loan in 2015 and 2016 and notched seven goals in 17 appearances across two seasons for the Islanders. This season, Chhetri has already netted twice in four appearances.

As the third highest goal-scorer (93) in international football at present, Chhetri’s influence spreads beyond football in the country. He is a proper sporting icon and speaks extensively on the importance of recognising, nurturing, and promoting talents across all sports through a proper mechanism to elevate India to greater heights globally.

“The earlier we can identify the talents, him or her, given them the right infrastructure, right schooling, the right education to become a better player, I think we are good. I hope not only in football, but throughout every sport if we can do it, we will soon be a proper sporting country,” Chhetri further said in the interaction.

Champions League: 14-time winner Real Madrid walk past Braga to reach round of 16

Italian police said they had arrested 11 German football supporters in Naples after violent clashes on the eve of Wednesday's Champions League match between Napoli and Union Berlin.

Around 300 German ultras wearing red bandanas over their faces rampaged through the historic centre of the southern Italian city on Tuesday evening, police said in a statement.

They damaged parked cars and street furniture, devastated a local shop and attacked police officers with cobblestones, clubs, metal and wooden rods and firecrackers, it said.

Ten were arrested during the clashes, and belonged to "the most extremist ultras group of the visiting team's fans, as well as the fans of Borussia&nbsp;Moenchengladbach", a historic rival of Napoli which is twinned with Union Berlin, police said.

An 11th German fan was arrested in a separate incident in Naples, accused of violence towards a public official.

Wednesday's match kicks off at 6:45 pm (1745 GMT) at the Maradona Stadium in Naples.

Naples was also the scene of serious disorder before and after last season's Champions League last-16 clash with Eintracht Frankfurt, whose hardcore fans travelled to Italy despite a ticketing controversy which led to the German club not taking up their away allocation.

Jenni Hermoso said she hoped something good would come out of the kiss scandal involving former Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales at the Women's World Cup. Rubiales has been banned from all football-related activities for three years by FIFA following the allegedly non-consensual kiss he gave Hermoso at the final in August.

He has said he will use his right to appeal, accusing FIFA of not giving him the chance to defend himself. Rubiales has repeatedly said the kiss was consensual, while Hermoso says it was forced on her. The scandal not only overshadowed the team's World Cup triumph, but snowballed into a "Me Too" moment that had been building for years.

When asked how she wanted to be remembered, Hermoso told GQSpain: "As someone who has wanted to leave Spain at the top but, above all, as someone who has tried to change many mentalities." The hashtag #SeAcabo, which means 'It's over' in Spanish, has become a mantra for those calling for change. "Fortunately or unfortunately, there is this story, but I am going to learn to take advantage of it positively to fight for what I believe is good for society. The #SeAcabo movement must bring a new era," the 33-year-old said.

Hermoso scored a last-gasp winner against Italy in the Nations League last month on her return to the national team for the first time since the incident. "These months, with everything that has happened, my mind has wandered a little from football. At times, I didn't remember that I was a footballer. But I go back to training, to a field, to putting on the uniform, and I want to give my best version again," Hermoso said. "In the race to the Olympic Games, in my team in Mexico, in the national team. I will continue enjoying this sport."

Hermoso said it had been a difficult period for her and that she continues to work with her psychologist. "I've had to assume the consequences of an act that I did not provoke, that I had not chosen or premeditated," she added. "I have received threats, and that is something you never get used to."

Hooded attackers stabbed a Paris Saint-Germain supporter ahead of the French club's Champions League match at AC Milan, Italian police said Tuesday.

The unnamed French man was "seriously injured by two stab wounds in the leg" in Milan on Monday night and taken to hospital, police said in a statement.

The Corriere della Sera newspaper said the man was 34 years old and his life was not in danger.

Witnesses told police the clash happened between around 50 Milan fans and French fans who were in the Navigli area of the northern Italian city.

Video images on social media shared by Italian news sites show a group of men on a canal side known for its cafes, bars and nightlife.&nbsp;As flares are set off, they suddenly turn and run from another group of men, some of whom are wearing hoods and wielding what look like batons.

The attack comes less than two months after a Newcastle United supporter was stabbed in the same area of the city ahead of a Champions League fixture against Milan.

Seven-time European champions Milan on Tuesday host PSG, who currently lead Group F by two points and will be favourites after hammering the Italians 3-0 at the Parc des Princes a fortnight ago.

An already hot atmosphere at the San Siro will be further enflamed by the return of Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who left Milan for PSG as a free agent in the summer of 2021.

Tuesday's match could have a huge impact on both side's prospects of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League as just four points separate the four teams in the group.

Milan are bottom of the group on two points after failing to score a single goal in their opening three matches.

Mauricio Pochettino has reflected on the prospect of facing boos from Tottenham Hotspur fans when his Chelsea side face his former London team.&nbsp;Pochettino said he will take whatever the Tottenham fans deliver in his stride.

The decision by Pochettino to join his former club's&nbsp;fierce cross-city rivals has not gone down well with a section of supporters at the&nbsp;Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, Pochettino said it wasn't him that severed ties with the club.&nbsp;

"I am going to accept what they will show. I didn’t decide to leave. We parted ways because I was sacked. It’s not a criticism of the club...but we didn’t decide to leave. Maybe we would still be there," said Pochettino.

Despite Pochettino's move to Stamford Bridge, it is worth noting that the Argentine had an outstanding five and a half years at Spurs. Under his tenure, Spurs left the ignominy of a mid-table club and turned into a top-four competitor whilst coming perilously close to a Champions League trophy.&nbsp;

<h2>Pochettino lauds Daniel Levy</h2>

The Chelsea boss recalled his working relationship with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and recalled how he texted him.&nbsp;

“Daniel is really clever. It is amazing, the job he is doing for Tottenham. You see Tottenham 20 years ago and now, how it changed, how it moved on. You need to recognise his job.”

"He sent a text when I signed here, wishing the best to me and to everyone. We need to be natural. Nearly six years working together. How many things happened in six years? Good and not so good! We cannot forget our relationship now."

FC Cincinnati booked their place in the semi-finals of the MLS Cup Eastern Conference playoffs on Saturday after defeating New York Red Bulls on penalties to complete a 2-0 first-round series victory.

An absorbing contest at the Red Bull Arena was decided on spot-kicks after top seeds Cincinnati came from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw and send the match straight to a shootout.

Cincinnati's Argentine goalkeeper, Roman Celentano, was the hero for the visitors, diving to save New York's 10th penalty from Andres Reyes to seal an 8-7 victory.

The defeat was cruel on eighth-seeded New York, which saw midfielder John Tolkin and teenage substitute Serge Ngoma both miss penalties that would have secured a victory and forced a decider in the best-of-three series.

The result sends Cincinnati into a semi-final against either Philadelphia Union or New England Revolution.

Cincinnati had almost won the game in 90 minutes when a corner from captain Luciano Acosta deep into stoppage time was bundled into the net with what appeared to be the final kick of the match.

Cincinnati's players celebrated but the goal was chalked off after VAR ruled that New York goalkeeper Carlos Coronel had been impeded in the six-yard box.

Earlier, New York had taken the lead in first half added time after Tom Barlow prodded home from close range.&nbsp;

That goal itself was tinged with controversy, with Barlow fortunate to be on the field after escaping a red card for a wild tackle on Yerson Mosquera moments earlier.

Cincinnati, which finished 26 points ahead of New York in the regular season standings, launched a furious second-half onslaught as New York battled to hold onto the lead.

Eventually the Cincinnati pressure told, with Acosta surging forward from midfield on the counter attack before slipping a pass to Aaron Boupendza, whose low-angled shot across goal beat the diving Coronel to make it 1-1.

"I recovered the ball for my son Lorenzo. I can tell him now that I am champion of the Libertadores," said Cano, whose 13th goal this season in the competition was as many as the total scored by all of Boca's players combined.

"I want to dedicate this title to my family, the team, our director and the fans. It was a dream that we wanted to achieve since the first game," he added.

Fluminense's Fernando Diniz, who is also Brazil's interim coach, finally delivered the elusive trophy - the equivalent to Europe's Champions League - for a team who lost the 2008 final.

"We had a lot of chances today but in the end, we failed to capitalise on the opportunity to take advantage of the extra man," said Boca goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

"I think we did a great cup (run), we thank the people and we regret not giving them a joy today."

Argentina captain Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or award for the eighth time, most by any, during the recently held ceremony at the&nbsp;Chatelet Theatre in Paris on Monday (Nov 1). He went past France's Kylian Mbappe and Norway and Manchester City's young star Erling Halaand to win the top prize in Paris. With this, Messi has a clear lead in terms of winning the prestigious award for most times by any player. Cristiano Ronaldo, his arch-rival, is in the second spot having won the award on five occasions. After the win, Messi opened up on his fierce rivalry with Ronaldo and even made a big statement on the Ballon d'Or award in general.&nbsp;

<h2>Messi: It was only a so-called 'battle'</h2>

Speaking on his rivalry with Portugal captain Ronaldo -- who is currently part of the Riyadh-based club Al-Nassr -- Messi told AS in an interview, "It was only a so-called “battle”. In a sporting sense, it was really good, we fed off each other because we are very competitive. He always wanted to beat everyone and win everything. It was a very nice period for us and for people who like football in general. I think what we did for so long was very admirable."

The legendary footballer, who led Argentina to a World Cup title last year in the mega event in Qatar, further added that it is much easier to reach the top but tough to remain at that position.&nbsp;"The easy thing is to get there, but the difficult thing is to stay. We stayed at the top for practically 10-15 years. That was very difficult to sustain. It was incredible and I have fond memories, also for everyone who enjoys football,” Messi opined.

On the Ballon d'Or award, the 36-year-old Messi said, "The truth is that I stopped thinking about the Ballon d’Or a long time ago. Scottish football club Celtic has withdrawn season tickets for a section of the support group known as the Green Brigade after it displayed Palestine flags during one of the matches.&nbsp;

Celtic said it made the decision following the group's consistent failure to adhere to club and stadium rules.

"To avoid any misunderstanding...It is as a result of the increasingly serious escalation in these unacceptable behaviours and non-compliance with applicable regulations that the progressive steps are being taken by the Club," Celtic said in a statement.&nbsp;

The move was fast-tracked after the group coordinated a display of solidarity with the people of Palestine by displaying the flags at the Champions League game against Atlético Madrid last week.

The club had requested its supporters to not bring any political banners or flags which could lead to disciplinary fines from UEFA. According to reports, the governing body of football in Europe is investigating the matter and could soon impose a penalty on the Scottish club.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Green Brigade accused&nbsp;the Celtic board of being hypocritical, citing issues over the club's history and the war in Ukraine. The Israel-Hamas conflict has divided the footballing world. While football club are not taking any sides - a marked departure from their stance at the peak of the Russia-Ukraine war, the players are excerscing their opinion on social media.&nbsp;

More than 1,500 Israelis have died after Hamas - a terror outfit operating from the Gaza Strip - launched an ambush attack on Israel last month. As a retaliatory move, Israel has been bombing specific terror locations in the Gaza Strip to eradicate Hamas out of existence.

However, more than 8,000 Palestinians have lost their lives as collateral damage, according to the claims made by the health ministry in Gaza, controlled by Hamas. Last week, the Israeli forces launched a ground operation in Gaza which is expected to escalate the conflict.&nbsp;

Scottish football club Celtic has withdrawn season tickets for a section of the support group known as the Green Brigade after it displayed Palestine flags during one of the matches.

Scottish football club Celtic has withdrawn season tickets for a section of the support group known as the Green Brigade after it displayed Palestine flags during one of the matches. Celtic said it made the decision following the group's consistent failure to adhere to club and stadium rules. "To avoid any misunderstanding...It is as a result of the increasingly serious escalation in these unacceptable behaviours and non-compliance with applicable regulations that the progressive steps are being taken by the Club," Celtic said in a statement. The move was fast-tracked after the group coordinated a display of solidarity with the people of Palestine by displaying the flags at the Champions League game against Atlético Madrid last week. The club had requested its supporters to not bring any political banners or flags which could lead to disciplinary fines from UEFA. According to reports, the governing body of football in Europe is investigating the matter and could soon impose a penalty on the Scottish club. Meanwhile, the Green Brigade accused the Celtic board of being hypocritical, citing issues over the club's history and the war in Ukraine. The Israel-Hamas conflict has divided the footballing world. While football club are not taking any sides - a marked departure from their stance at the peak of the Russia-Ukraine war, the players are excerscing their opinion on social media. On Monday (Oct 30), Argentina captain and Inter Miami's Lionel Messi scripted history by claiming his eighth Ballon d'Or award. He edged past&nbsp;Norway's UEFA Player of the Year and treble winner Erling Haaland of Manchester City to win the prestigious award for the eighth time, most ever by a significant margin, and extended&nbsp;his lead over arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo (5) by three.

Messi has now finished among the top three a record 14 times overall, finishing runner-up on five instances. After the award, he was asked in the media interaction whether he views himself as the best ever in history. To this, the 36-year-old said, "Well, as always, I don't know if I'm the best, if I am or not, and it's not something that I ask myself or that I'm interested in. But the fact that maybe in the future it will be said that I can be among the best, as they say, is a gift for me. It's something very special. Football is played by everyone, everywhere. From a very young age, every kid wants to be a footballer, to be a professional, and for them to tell me that I can be among the best, for me, it is an honour, a great pride, and that’s it."

<h2>'I think I deserve to be able to say goodbye to those people....'</h2>

After Messi's extension at the Paris-Saint Germain was ruled out early this&nbsp;year, many believed he could return to his home club Barcelona, which gave a massive boost to his career in the initial years. However, it didn't happen as the legendary footballer moved to the MLS club Inter Miami in mid-July. Asked if he wants to make a return to Bara, Messi revealed, "I don't know. I really don't know. Obviously, I would love to be able to say goodbye to the people in a different way, because I think there was a weird feeling when I left, and I think it's not good with everything that we shared and lived, along with everything that they gave me."

He added, "I told the club that we shouldn’t finish in the way we have finished. I think I deserve to be able to say goodbye to those people that we have shared so much joy and sadness throughout my career at Barcelona, in my home. I love the club, I love the people of Barcelona and well, so be it. I'm delighted I could be there, obviously.”

Messi ended with a whopping 672 goals for the Spanish club in 778 games from 2004-05 to 2020-21.

Messi faced a tough fight from Haaland and Kylian Mbappe but eventually got hold of the prestigious award once again in his illustrious career. Last year, he helped Argentina lift the FIFA World Cup, in Qatar&nbsp;in a thrilling final versus France and ended up scoring seven goals in total. In addition, he&nbsp;was named the tournament's best player.

The superstar&nbsp;also dedicated the award to Argentina and world football's&nbsp;all-time great Diego Maradona,&nbsp;who would have celebrated his 63rd birthday on Monday.

Meanwhile, Spain's World Cup-winning star Aitana Bonmati took the women's prize&nbsp;on the stage of the Chatelet Theatre in Paris.

Lionel Messi on whether he views himself as best in history, possible Barcelona return after 8th Ballon d'Or

Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior has signed a new contract with Real Madrid that runs until 2027, the Spanish club announced on Tuesday.

"Real Madrid and Vini Jr. have reached an agreement to extend the player's contract, linking him to the club until 30 June 2027," the club said in a statement.

Vinicius, 23, joined Madrid in 2018 from Brazilian club Flamengo and has developed into one of La Liga's standout players, scoring the winning goal in last year's Champions League final against Liverpool.

His existing contract was due to expire at the end of this season. Local media reported an extension had already been agreed last year, but it was only made official on Tuesday.

The club provided no financial details, but Spanish media reported the arrangement includes a one-billion euro ($1.06 billion) release clause -- identical to those inserted into the contract of several Barcelona youngsters.

"At the club of my dreams until 2027 and for more titles together," Vinicius wrote on his Instagram account. "The biggest and best club in the world."

Vinicius finished sixth Monday in this year's Ballon d'Or voting and also received the Socrates award, named after the Brazil icon, in recognition of his humanitarian work.

Signed by Madrid for 45 million euros as a teenager, Vinicius endured a challenging start to his time in the capital -- scoring just 14 goals in his first three years before a breakthrough 2021-22 season.

Playing alongside Karim Benzema, Vinicius struck 22 times and contributed 20 assists during that campaign as Madrid won the Liga title and a record-extending 14th European Cup.

He scored 23 goals last term, adding 21 assists, as Madrid lifted the Copa del Rey for the first time since 2014.

Following the departure of 2022 Ballon d'Or winner Benzema to Saudi Arabia in June, Vinicius has become the main man in Madrid's attack, but he was slowed by a hamstring injury that ruled him out for most of September.

His contract renewal comes a day after he was honoured at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris for his work in the community. His foundation, the Vini Jr Institute, uses technology to educate underprivileged Brazilian children.

"I'm happy to be here for this cause. We work in favelas in Brazil and I'm happy to be able to help the youngest ones," Vinicius said after collecting the Socrates award.

He has also become a leading figure in Spain in the fight against racism after being the victim of racist abuse on various occasions during his time at Madrid.

The latest incident occurred during Saturday's Clasico, a game Madrid won 2-1 away to Barcelona.

A video published by Spanish media appeared to show a home supporter calling Vinicius a "monkey", while an object that looks like a banana skin also appears to be thrown from elsewhere.

Vinicius has 24 Brazil caps and played for his country at the 2022 World Cup.

Football: Vinicius Jr signs new four-year deal with Real Madrid, to stay at club until 2027

Lionel Messi won the eighth Ballon d'Or of his remarkable career at a glittering ceremony in Paris on Monday, while Spain's World Cup-winning star Aitana Bonmati took the women's prize.

For Messi, the trophy rewards, above all else, his inspirational performances at last year's World Cup in Qatar, when he dragged Argentina to victory, scoring seven goals and being named the tournament's best player.

It was the crowning moment of his astonishing career, and it allowed him to see off stiff competition, in particular from Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, to take the award on the stage of the Chatelet Theatre in Paris.

It was a return to the French capital after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain in June and his subsequent move to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

"This is a gift to the whole Argentina team for what we achieved," said Messi on stage after receiving his award from David Beckham, the co-owner of Inter Miami.

Messi dedicated the trophy to late Argentina legend Diego Maradona, who would have celebrated his 63rd birthday on Monday.

"Happy birthday Diego. This is for you too," he said.

Messi benefits from a recent change which means the award is based on a player's record over the last season, rather than over the calendar year.

He won despite an underwhelming final season at PSG, even if he was a Ligue 1 title winner.

<h2>- Mbappe, Haaland just miss out -</h2>

Mbappe was the star player in that team, scoring 41 goals, and was also the World Cup's top scorer with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final which France lost to Argentina on penalties.

Yet he fell just short for the Ballon d'Or, finishing third, while Norway striker Haaland came second after scoring 52 goals in 53 games for the Manchester City team that won the treble of English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Messi is 36 and won his first Ballon d'Or in 2009. With eight, he is now three ahead of his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo, the next most decorated player in the history of the award.

It remains to be seen if Messi will again feature in the running for the prize, which is voted for by one journalist in each of the top 100 nations in the FIFA ranking.

"I am not thinking about the long-term future. I am just enjoying the day to day at the moment," he said.

Messi will struggle to hold off the next wave of superstars, led by Mbappe, Haaland and Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham, but his World Cup performances made his victory this time feel inevitable.

The women's prize seemed even more clear cut, as Bonmati was rewarded for starring as Spain won the World Cup in Australia in August.

The 25-year-old midfielder was named the best player at the World Cup as the Spanish team overcame off-field turbulence, including protests against their national federation and coach Jorge Vilda, to lift the trophy.

<h2>- 'Unique year' -</h2>

Bonmati also starred as Barcelona won the Champions League last season and was recently named as the UEFA Women's Player of the Year.

"It is difficult to improve on this. It has been a unique year," she told various media including AFP.

"If anyone said to me when I was little that I would play at the Camp Nou, win the World Cup, two Champions Leagues, a Ballon d'Or, a UEFA award, these are extraordinary things."

She was one of four members of the triumphant Spain team to feature among the 30 nominees, with Alba Redondo, Salma Paralluelo and full-back Olga Carmona, who netted the winner in the final, all shortlisted.

Last year's Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, also part of that Spain side, was not nominated after missing almost all of last season with a knee injury.

Australia's Sam Kerr came second with Paralluelo in third place.

Putellas had won the Ballon d'Or in each of the previous two campaigns. Norway's Ada Hegerberg won the inaugural award in 2018 and USA star Megan Rapinoe succeeded her a year later.

Bellingham won the Kopa Trophy for the best player of last season aged under 21.

The 20-year-old has started his Madrid career with 13 goals in 13 games, although the prize rewards his performances in his final campaign with Borussia Dortmund.

Bellingham's Madrid teammate, the Brazil forward Vinicius Junior, won the Socrates prize in recognition of his off-pitch work.

Messi's Argentina colleague Emiliano Martinez won the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper of the season.

Sunday's Ligue 1 match between Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais was called off after Lyon's team bus was pelted with stones, injuring coach Fabio Grosso, as the players made their way to the Stade Velodrome.

Sky Italia footage showed damage to two bus windows and Grosso being led into the stadium by two assistants. He was covering his face with his hands, which were stained with blood.

Italian media said Grosso suffered injuries to his scalp and face.

"He can't hold a conversation, he had shards of glass in his face," Lyon's club president, John Textor added. "I'm very angry - our players, our coach, prepared for tonight and the fans wanted to see the game played," he told Prime Video.

"Following the injuries of Lyon members, considering the opinion of the club, which did not wish to start the match, and the established protocol, the decision was taken not to play the match," said referee Francois Letexier, quoted by French media.

"The images of the OL bus attacked with stones and its supporters, and of Fabio Grosso's blooded face, are appalling," French sports minister Amelie Oudea Castera said on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

"These unacceptable acts deny the very values of soccer and sport, and the perpetrators must all be found and severely punished," she added.

Seven suspects had been arrested on Sunday night, the minister added.

Marseille said it accepted the decision taken by the French Professional League to call off the game, pledging to make sure it could "take place at the Stade Velodrome as soon as possible and under the best possible conditions".

"Because of a handful of thoughtless people, the party planned for this evening has been ruined, and 65,000 fans have been deprived of attending a football match," the club added.

Lyon said Grosso and his assistant, Raffaele Longo, were hit by projectiles, resulting in serious injuries to their faces, adding that six buses carrying supporters were also targeted.

"Olympique Lyonnais regrets that this type of situation occurs every year in Marseille and calls on the authorities to take the seriousness and the repetition of such incidents into account before an even more serious tragedy occurs," Lyon said.

Lyon are currently bottom of Ligue 1 with three points after nine matches. Marseille are ninth with 12 points.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. La Liga has opened an investigation into racial abuse aimed at Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior during the El Clasico match against Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday (Oct 28).

La Liga has opened an investigation into racial abuse aimed at Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior during the El Clasico match against Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday (Oct 28). The Spanish league is in contact with the Vincius camp and is working to identify the perpetrators, according to ESPN. "LaLiga has been working from the outset to identify the individuals involved in making racist insults and will file the relevant charges as is always the case," the league said in a statement, adding: "We are coordinating with the Mossos d'Esquadra [Catalan police] and FC Barcelona." Meanwhile, Barcelona, whose supporters are currently under microscope for the alleged racist act, said it will cooperate with the investigation. "Barcelona will always defend the values of football and sport such as respect for the opponent and we will investigate any racist insult that may have occurred this afternoon during the match against Real Madrid," Notably, the incident transpired at the end of the second half when Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti substituted Vinicius. After Madrid secured all three points, courtesy of a late winner from Jude Bellingham, Vinicius took his sweet time to get off the pitch, prompting Barcelona supporters to boo him. Ancelotti had to intervene as he held Vinicus' hand and dragged him out of the playing area and onto the bench. Previous history of racism against Vinicius Notably, Vinicus was abused in the same fixture last season and last week during an away game versus Sevilla as well. After the game, the Brazilian player took to social media where he revealed the racial abuse hurled his way by the Sevilla supporters, calling it the umpteenth time such an incident had taken place. Also read | Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr slams La Liga after racial abuse, Brazil President calls for end of racism Vinicius lauded Sevilla for taking prompt action against the perpetrators but expressed sadness that one of the racist persons in the crowd was a child. "Congratulations to Sevilla on the quick positioning and the penalty in another sad episode for Spanish Football," wrote the Brazilian on X, formerly known as Twitter. "The face of today's racist is plastered on websites as on many other occasions. I hope the Spanish authorities do their part and change the legislation once and for all. These people must be criminally punished too," he added." Days later, Mikel Camps, deputy spokesperson of the Barcelona board said Vinicius Junior was deserving of a slap for his on-field actions. "It's not racism, he deserves a slap for being a clown. What do these unnecessary and meaningless stepovers represent in the centre of the field?" said Camps in a now-deleted post on X. Earlier this year, after Vinicius Jr. was racially abused by Valencia fans, he wrote a lengthy post and called out the Spanish league saying "racism is normal in La Liga".
