The current Women's World Cup will be the best attended ever and is on course to smash the per-match record set in Canada in 2015,&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Australia chief executive James Johnson said on Friday. He also reiterated that a successful Women's World Cup could be a springboard to Australia hosting the men's event.

"There have been more people attending matches than any Women's World Cup," Johnson told a press briefing to mark the end of the group stage in Australia and co-host New Zealand.

So far more than 1.2 million fans have passed through the turnstiles and organisers now expect that figure to rise to 1.9 million by the time the tournament ends on Aug. 20.

"Our (target) was to get to 1.5 million and we'll go past that," Johnson said, adding that he had also "been hearing stories from all over the world" of record broadcast numbers.

This year's expanded field of 32 teams means 64 games rather than the 52 played in Canada. However, average attendances in 2015 were around 26,000, compared with more than 30,000 so far this time.

And, as evidenced by the 40,000 fans who packed Sydney&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Stadium on Wednesday for France's entertaining 6-3 group game win over Panama, the tournament seems to be capturing the imagination of neutrals in host countries where soccer has not traditionally enjoyed top billing.

And merchandise is selling fast.

Matildas jerseys, Johnson said, are outselling the Socceroos jersey from the FIFA men's World Cup last year in Qatar two to one. Sam Kerr, the Chelsea striker who sat out Australia's first-round games with a calf injury, is the top-selling jersey.

"We're investing just as much money in the Matildas programme as we are the Socceroos programme. That's something that's really important for us," he said.

Research has shown the Matildas trail only Australia's men's cricket and soccer teams in national popularity, and have passed both the country's men's rugby union and rugby league squads.

"So the (Matildas) brand is strong, it's powerful," Johnson said. "The brand is in every city and town across the country."

FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who attended Australia's 4-0 rout of Olympic champions Canada in Melbourne, labelled the tournament the "best ever" World Cup during a visit to Canberra this week.

Johnson said a successful tournament would encourage Australia to consider bidding for the Club World Cup in 2029 "and then there's the men's World Cup in 2034 that we're also going to look at."

After a successful women's tournament in 2015, Canada will be co-hosts with the United States and Mexico for the 2026 men's World Cup.

Similarly, "Australia will no doubt host a men's World Cup one day. And what better way to do that than on the back of the best-ever Women's World Cup," he added.

Women's World Cup 2023 on right track to smash attendance records, says FA's James Johnson

Lionel Messi’s arrival in Major League Soccer (MLS) has transformed American football like never before. The World Cup-winning star with Argentina, Messi, joined the MLS side Inter Miami on a free transfer this summer following a fallout with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) earlier in April. Upon making his debut with the American side in July, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner (in three matches) scored five goals, including two braces, resulting&nbsp;in&nbsp;three wins.

In an exclusive chat with WION's Susan Tehrani, Dan Courtemanche – the Executive VP of Communications, MLS, shared his thoughts on how Messi has turned heads in North America regarding social media engagement, growth of soccer, footfalls at the venues and much more.&nbsp;

Starting with how his decision to join the Major League Soccer (MLS) impacted the overall picture, Dan said, “The great player in the world decided he wanted to come and play with Inter Miami in the MLS. That's clearly a seminal moment for the league and soccer in North America.”

“We believe the magnitude of his decision cannot be overstated as it is a transformational moment, and we will see the difference in next three, five or ten years on how it changed the sport in the country,” Dan added.

When asked about if 2026 FIFA World Cup (to be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico) had anything to do with Messi deciding to join the MLS instead of anywhere else despite lucrative offers, Dan said,&nbsp;“The World Cup in our country is going to serve as the rocket-fuel for the growth of soccer in three countries. That said, the World Cup was not the factor to sign Lionel Messi. We are hopeful that he continues to play for his national team, and we will see him here in 2026.”

<h2>Messi’s inclusion in MLS skyrockets growth of football in country</h2>

With several superstars in the past, including Pele, David Beckham, also plying their trades in the MLS, Messi’s inclusion contributes to league’s success. Dan said his addition accelerated the growth of football in the USA like never before.

“Pele led the foundation when he came to America in 1975. Fast forward 2007, David Beckham joined MLS - a relatively new league then, and then Messi comes this year. He's taken it to an entirely different level. He's accelerated the growth of our league and this sport in North America like nothing we have ever seen before,” he said.

Dan revealed how the social media numbers got influenced as well.&nbsp;

“Earlier, Inter Miami had a decent Instagram following (around 1 million) before Messi joined the club, and they are now at 13 million followers. We have seen the response on social media in his first couple of games. He's a global icon, and he's resonating,” MLS’ Executive VP added.

He added when Messi travels across USA (Since he played three home games so far), there are going to be packed stadiums everywhere.

“We knew that he was going to have an impact on the relevance of Inter Miami and Major League Soccer's popularity, and it translates to jersey sales. When he travels on the road, which he has not yet (since his first three games were at home), you will see packed stadiums in USA and Canada welcoming him to our league,” he added.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup winner had a sensational career which saw him winning 10 Serie A titles, one Ligue 1 trophy, five Coppa Italia and six Italia Supercoppa titles as well. The Italian legend had made his professional debut with Serie B club Parma at the age of 17. Buffon's last two years of professional football also came with Parma.

He won Coppa Italia, UEFA Cup and Italian Supercoppa with the club (Parma) four years after joining it in 1995. The goalie then moved to Juventus in 2001 for the then-world-record transfer fee of $57 million.

Football: Italy, Juventus great Gianluigi Buffon announces retirement after 28-year long career

Chelsea star Lauren James scored twice as European champions England swept past shellshocked China 6-1 and into the Women's World Cup last 16 on Tuesday to set up a clash with Nigeria. It equalled England's biggest-ever World Cup victory and booked them the top spot in Group D while consigning the Asian champions to their earliest-ever exit. Denmark beat Haiti 2-0 in the other group game to finish second and line up a knockout-round meeting with co-hosts Australia.

England made an explosive start at Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium with an instinctive finish from Manchester United striker Alessia Russo in just the fourth minute. Manchester City's Lauren Hemp and James added further goals before the break. Wang Shuang converted a second-half penalty for China, but James got her second with a sublime volley, substitute Chloe Kelly was gifted a fifth after a goalkeeper howler and Rachel Daly got in on the act as the clock ticked down. &nbsp;

England and Japan are the only teams to win all three group games so far, reaffirming their status as among the favourites to win the World Cup. While they celebrated, China's tournament ended at the group stage for the first time ever. The Steel Roses, an early powerhouse in women's football, made at least the round of 16 in the six previous World Cups they have played, finishing runners-up in 1999 during their heyday.

England, who only needed a point to top the table, started without injured Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh. Manchester United captain Katie Zelem replaced her in one of three changes with Jess Carter and Hemp returning in place of Kelly and Ella Toone. They made a dream start with Hemp breaking down the left and whipping in a dangerous cross which James headed down to Russo who took one touch before burying it in the corner.

China struggled to assert themselves and the inevitable second goal came in the 25th minute. Skipper Millie Bright won possession and slotted through to James who played in Hemp between two defenders and she finished confidently. Lucy Bronze clattered the post with a header before James added their third from a well-worked freekick routine, firing a stunner from the edge of the box.

They were unlucky not to be 4-0 ahead at half-time with another fantastic James strike disallowed for offside.&nbsp; China had to wait until the 52nd minute for their first chance, but they won a penalty for handball with Wang calmly converting from the spot to give them a glimmer of hope. But James produced a high-class side-footed volley from an inch-perfect Carter cross for their fourth and when Chinese goalkeeper Zhu Yu horribly misjudged a ball over the top, Kelly pounced for their fifth.

Daly made it a memorable night with another fine volley at the death.

<h2>- Danes ease through -</h2>

The Danes, playing at their first World Cup since 2007, thought they had scored early against Haiti in front of just under 18,000 in Perth but it was ruled out after a VAR review found Simone Boye was just off-side. Denmark made their early pressure count when Haiti conceded a penalty -- their third at this World Cup -- for handball. Skipper Pernille Harder scored from the spot.

Haiti woke up and had a golden opportunity just before the half-hour, but captain Nerilia Mondesir's effort was weak and easily saved by goalkeeper Lene Christensen. Haiti refused to go quietly in the second half and Melchie Dumornay headed weakly at Christensen from close range as they chased a first World Cup goal. Denmark sealed the deal deep in stoppage time through Sanne Troelsgaard.

But James produced a high-class side-footed volley from an inch-perfect Carter cross for their fourth and when Chinese goalkeeper Zhu Yu horribly misjudged a ball over the top, Kelly pounced for their fifth. Daly made it a memorable night with another fine volley at the death. - Danes ease through - The Danes, playing at their first World Cup since 2007, thought they had scored early against Haiti in front of just under 18,000 in Perth but it was ruled out after a VAR review found Simone Boye was just off-side. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. England thump China 6-1 to ease into FIFA World Cup last 16 as group winners

The United States reached the knockout stages of the Women's World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Portugal on Tuesday, surviving a late onslaught from the tournament debutants to keep their title defence alive at Eden Park.

The four-times champions were playing with everything on the line but spurned several chances to find the net and the addition of veteran Megan Rapinoe in the second half did little to turn things around against a physical Portugal defence.

They survived a huge scare in stoppage time when Ana Capeta hit the post and another when the striker won a free kick just outside the box a few minutes later but held on in the nerve-searing final minutes of the Group E clash.

Goalkeeper Ines Pereira had no issues stopping forward Lynn Williams' header in the fourth minute and co-captain Alex Morgan fired wide from the middle of the box in the sixth minute.

Williams had another header on target in the 14th minute off a cross from Sophia Smith, but Pereira easily gathered that effort.

In the 27th minute, Williams fired a shot straight at the Portugal keeper and smashed a follow up effort over the crossbar and Pereira was again equal to the task for the forward's final shot of the half in stoppage time.

The addition of winger Rapinoe in the 61st minute and forward Trinity Rodman in the 84th minute failed to revive the U.S. front line.

The stadium let out a collective gasp as Capeta's stoppage-time shot ricocheted off the post and the Americans scrambled together a frantic defence to avoid a once-unthinkable fate in the final moments of the match.

The United States move on to the last 16 in Melbourne, where they will almost certainly face Sweden, after finishing in second place in Group E behind the Netherlands who thrashed Vietnam 7-0.

"It's tough to be second, we wanted to go through first," said Morgan. "This team gave everything we just didn't put the ball in the back of the net. And then in the last few minutes, we just had to hold it down, we had to get the result and move on, now we move forward."

"It's just not going in the back of the net," Morgan added. "We have so many corners, we have so many opportunities, we got the crosses, I mean just unlucky you know."

FIFA Women's WC: USA manage to enter knockout stage after scrappy goalless draw with Portugal

Uruguayan defender Diego Godin retired from football on Sunday following Velez Sarsfield's 1-0 loss to Huracan in the last Argentine league game of the season, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious 20-year playing career. The former Atletico Madrid captain made 627 professional appearances, scored 38 goals and won 10 titles, including two Europa League trophies and three UEFA Super Cups with Atletico Madrid.

"I wanted to make the decision this way, being healthy, it may seem surprising, but I had been considering it for a while," the 37-year-old Godin told Argentine TV. "Now there are other priorities. My family is in Uruguay and I recently became a dad, I want to rest and enjoy other things, and I wanted to try to leave with a good image on the pitch."

Uruguay's Nacional considered signing Godin, a source close to the player told Reuters, but the centre-back made his final decision to step away from the pitch after his daughter's birth last month.

Godin started his career in 2003 with Uruguayan side CA Cerro. He went on to play for Nacional in 2006 before his move to Spain's Villarreal a season later. The defender then joined Atletico in 2010, where he made a name for himself as he captained the team during nine seasons.

Godin arrived at Velez in mid-2022 following a successful European run that also included spells at Inter Milan and Cagliari, and after spending six months at Brazil's Atletico Mineiro.

He was capped 161 times by Uruguay and featured in four World Cup editions as part of a golden generation that won the 2011 Copa America and finished fourth at the 2010 World Cup.

<h2>Allan Saint-Maximin joins&nbsp;Al-Ahli</h2>

French winger Allan Saint-Maximin has left Newcastle United and joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli on a three-year deal, both clubs said on Sunday.

"We pick the best, and he’s one of them," Al-Ahli posted on messaging platform X, previously known as Twitter.

The clubs did not disclose the transfer fee for the 26-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Ligue 1 side Nice in 2019.

Saint-Maximin, 26, will team up with former Premier League players Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy and Riyad Mahrez at Al-Ahli.

Saint-Maximin was left out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of the United States, with manager Eddie Howe saying the club had to sell a player during this window due to UEFA's Financial Fair Play Regulations.

The Public Investment Fund, which is the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, owns 75% and 80% of Al-Ahli and Newcastle, respectively.

Saint-Maximin joined a growing list of high-profile names to move to the Middle East, with Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and Ruben Neves among those following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, who moved to Al-Nassr in January.

Brazilian defender Dani Alves will be tried on sexual assault charges in Spain, the high court of Catalonia told AFP on Monday. The former&nbsp;Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star was detained in January after being accused of raping a young woman in the bathroom of a nightclub in late December. The court said a date for the trial had not yet been set.

The 40-year-old Brazilian has been held in custody without bail because the court investigating him felt there was a risk he would try to flee. When the story first broke -- and before he was arrested -- Alves in a television interview initially denied knowing the woman.

But when questioned by investigators after his arrest, he changed his story, insisting that they had had consensual relations. Alves, who could face up to 12 years in jail if found guilty, defended his innocence in an interview published in June, saying he has a "clear conscience".

"I have a really clear conscience regarding what happened that night in the bathroom of the VIP area of the Sutton nightclub," he told daily newspaper La Vanguardia in his first interview since his arrest. "What happened and what didn't happen. And what didn't happen is that I forced this woman to do anything that we did," he added.

In the June article, he told La Vanguardia that he had lied at first because he was afraid his wife would leave him if he admitted he had been with another woman. At the time of the incident, Alves was on holiday in Barcelona after playing for Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar.

After his arrest, Alves, who is being held in the Brians penitentiary complex outside Barcelona, was sacked by his Mexican club Pumas UNAM. In a highly successful career, Alves won 42 football titles, including three Champions Leagues with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil.

Borussia Dortmund punished Manchester United's defensive lapses on Sunday as the English Premier League giants wrapped up their North American tour with a 3-2 defeat to the Bundesliga side in Las Vegas.

A second-half strike by Dortmund substitute Youssoufa Moukoko proved the difference in an entertaining clash at the Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders.

United manager Erik ten Hag named a virtual reserve team to start, leaving the likes of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and new signing Mason Mount on the bench.

Yet United's makeshift starting XI were more than a match for Dortmund in the first half, dominating for long periods before Diogo Dalot handed the Red Devils the lead on 24 minutes with a long-range strike.

But Dortmund turned the game on its head in the closing minutes of the first half, with two goals in a minute from Netherlands international forward Donyell Malen.

The first came when United's defense failed to close down Karim Adeyemi's burst down the right.&nbsp;

Despite the attention of a cluster of United defenders, Adeyemi was able to square for Malen, who hooked in from close range.

Malen grabbed his second a minute later, this time seizing on a United howler when Victor Lindelof lost possession inside the area trying to pass out from the back.

United were lucky not to go 3-1 down in the opening minutes of the second half, when another defensive slip, this time by Harry Maguire, allowed Sebastien Haller a shot on goal.&nbsp;

United goalkeeper Andre Onana saved and then watched in relief as Adeyemi blasted the follow-up wide with the goal gaping.&nbsp;

United did get back on level terms in the 52nd minute, when Brazilian forward Antony swept home a low shot from inside the area after a botched clearance by Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels.

Ten Hag rang in the changes with 30 minutes remaining, with Rashford instantly providing more of an attacking threat.

But it was Dortmund who scored the decisive goal, with veteran Marco Reus working a clever opening to set up Moukoko for the winner.

Football: Borussia Dortmund beat sloppy Manchester United in Vegas friendly

Hayley Raso scored a first half brace and Mary Fowler struck after the break as Australia crushed Canada 4-0 on Monday to storm into the last 16 of the Women's World Cup and send the Olympic champions spinning out of the tournament. In front of a febrile crowd at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Raso struck in the ninth minute with a low, rightfooted shot and doubled down in the 39th from a goalmouth scramble as unused captain Sam Kerr cheered by the touchline.

Fowler made sure of the win with a deft touch in the 58th minute that pinged in off the right post, before Steph Catley slotted a penalty in stoppage time as a relieved nation celebrated the co-hosts' advance.

"It means so much to us," Raso told Channel 7. "I'm so proud of the girls. We put in a real shift tonight and everybody fought for each other and to come away with a pretty convincing win is very exciting.

"We had our backs against the walls after (the) last game and we knew that we needed to come out and put in a big performance. We knew we needed to win, we wanted to top the group. We showed that never-say-die attitude and we gave it all tonight."

Canada bowed out at the group stage for the first time since 2011 and with some regret after having needed only a draw to advance.

There was no need for Kerr to be Australia's saviour and the striker can rest her injured calf for a week before the co-hosts' next clash in the last 16, most likely against Denmark.

Australia topped Group B on six points, one ahead of Nigeria, who also advanced after a 0-0 draw against Ireland.

Canada's talismanic captain Christine Sinclair started on the pitch but bowed out of her sixth and final World Cup in disappointment at halftime when coach Bev Priestman triggered a raft of substitutes.

With their tournament on a knife-edge after the 3-2 shock by Nigeria, Australia played with courage and were quickly rewarded when a Steph Catley cross found Raso in the box. She drilled a low shot inside the far post to put Australia in front. Although an offside flag went up, the goal was confirmed by VAR, sending the crowd into raptures. They almost made it 2-0 minutes later, but Raso's shot was well saved by goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

Home fans were roaring again in the 34th minute as Fowler charged in to thump the ball in from close range, with Raso providing the cross.

VAR again intervened, this time cancelling the goal for offside, triggering a huge round of booing.

It scarcely mattered as five minutes later, Raso was celebrating her second strike after Sheridan failed to clear the ball from a set-piece.

Priestman made changes at halftime, with the retiring Sophie Schmidt coming on and blazing over the bar in the 56th minute.

But another Australian raid minutes later ended with Fowler slotting in a cross from Caitlin Foord to blow out the lead.

Worse was to come for Canada as Jessie Fleming clattered into Katrina Gorry just inside the area to concede a penalty, allowing Catley to blast the ball into the net for the coup de grace.

Women's World Cup: Australia secure knockout berth with 4-0 win over Canada

Hinata Miyazawa scored twice and set up another as Japan stunned Spain 4-0 at the Women's World Cup on Monday to set up a clash with Norway in the knockout stage.

The Japanese delivered a lesson in clinical counter-attacking and led 3-0 at half-time to issue a World Cup warning against one of the title contenders. The 2011 champions Japan topped the group to play another former winner in Norway while Spain will face Switzerland in the last 16.

Miyazawa's brace took her to four goals for the tournament while Riko Ueki and Mina Tanaka bagged the others for a hugely impressive Japan.

Boasting a host of European club stars, Spain dominated possession in front of a crowd of 20,957 in Wellington. But they didn't create a single clear chance as Japan soaked up pressure and broke with lethal effect. It was a tactical masterclass from Japan coach Futoshi Ikeda, who set up a packed midfield, denying space and time for Barcelona stars Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati.

In contrast, Japan's three first-half attempts resulted in three blistering goals as their speedy front line took advantage of a disorganised Spanish defence missing injured captain Ivana Andres.

Their first win in five attempts over Spain was comprehensive and leaves 11th-ranked Japan now among the tournament favourites. Their 11 goals is the most by any team while they're one of four sides yet to concede a goal.

Miyazawa is also the tournament's leading scorer, although she was denied a chance to add to her four goals when replaced at halftime.

With both teams having already qualified after coasting past pool opponents Zambia and Costa Rica, sixth-ranked Spain were considered the favourites.

Only needing a draw to top the pool, the Europeans were able to control the ball for long periods but they had few answers when their opponents broke with speed.

The opener came in the 12th minute when Miyazawa outpaced the defence to reach Jun Endo's curling pass from halfway before slotting low past Misa Rodriguez.

Miyazawa turned provider in the 29th minute, driving forward before finding Ueki, whose shot took a giant deflection from Irene Paredes and snuck inside the top corner.

Another lightning quick counter gave Miyazawa space and the striker blasted powerfully past Rodriguez five minutes before the interval.

Substitute Tanaka's sensational 82nd minute goal came after a sizzling solo run from the touchline that turned the defence inside out.

ALSO READ: Uruguayan Diego Godin retires from professional football; Allan Saint-Maximin latest to join Saudi Pro League Their first win in five attempts over Spain was comprehensive and leaves 11th-ranked Japan now among the tournament favourites. Ikeda has quality at his disposal, having made five changes to his side who beat Costa Rica, including the selection of forwards Miyazawa and Ueki over in-form pair Tanaka and Aoba Fujino. Football superstar and Argentina's world cup-winning captain Lionel Messi's latest Instagram story has set the internet ablaze with rumours of him possibly playing in the next FIFA World Cup. The Argentinian had earlier said that the 2022 Qatar World Cup final against France was his last appearance for his country at least in World Cup.

In his latest Instagram story, Messi, however, seems to drop a hint that he'll come back to play in the next edition of the tournament in 2026. In the story, Messi is donning the iconic No. 10 Argentina jersey once worn by the country's legend, Diego Maradona. Have a look at the photos below:

Football: Lionel Messi's Instagram story fuels speculations of him playing in next FIFA World Cup

Coach Randy Waldrum said his Nigeria team had been "underestimated and underappreciated" as they strive to seal their place in the Women's World Cup last 16 on Monday.

Nigeria drew 0-0 with Olympic champions Canada in their opening match and then fought back from a goal down to beat co-hosts Australia 3-2.

That left the Super Falcons just needing to avoid defeat in their final game against already eliminated Ireland on Monday.

Waldrum's side suffered a turbulent build-up to the tournament, the American coach clashing openly with the Nigerian football authorities over planning and unpaid wages.

Add in being in one of the toughest groups, and Nigeria were not expected to reach the knockout stages for only the third time.

Waldrum told reporters on Sunday that they had shown they were better than that and their FIFA ranking of 40th.

"I would say that we were underestimated and underappreciated," the 66-year-old said on the eve of their meeting in Brisbane with the Irish.

"Hopefully we've proven that to the world right now that we belong in a higher place (than 40th)."

Defender Michelle Alozie agreed, saying it was wrong that their draw with Canada and win over Australia had been called surprise results by many.

"With regards to Canada, the last game we played against them outside of the World Cup we tied them 2-2 and I think a lot of people forget to acknowledge that," she said.

"We've been building this entire time, the last two years that I've been on the team, and so when we came to Australia we felt very confident.

"We felt we had a game plan and all we had to do was execute it, especially on the counterattacks, which we did.

"So although it might have been a surprise for the rest of the world... we worked really hard for that, so it wasn't much of a shock to us."

FIFA Women's WC: 'Don't underestimate us,' warns Nigeria coach

Manuela Vanegas headed a stoppage-time winner to hand Colombia a 2-1 upset victory over Germany just when the twice-world champions thought they had saved a point in a thrilling Women's World Cup clash at Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.

The defender powered the ball home from a corner eight minutes after German striker Alexandra Popp had converted a penalty to cancel out a stunning strike from Colombian teenager Linda Caicedo.

Caicedo, who gave her team a fright by collapsing in training on Thursday, delighted the massed ranks of her compatriots in the 40,499 crowd with a goal of the highest quality in the 52nd minute.

The Colombians tore into the match from the kickoff and the Germans looked rattled not only by their aggression but also by the deafening noise of their yellow-shirted fans.

Colombia striker Mayra Ramirez headed a chance down and wide in the ninth minute and the South Americans continued to niggle the Germans with a dig to the ribs here and a flailing arm in the tackle there.

The corner was Germany's major weapon in their opening 6-0 thrashing of Morocco but Colombia goalkeeper Catalina Perez came out confidently to gather the first ball swung in from the corner flag.

Germany forward Lina Magull had a good chance in the 21st minute but her swing at the ball made contact with nothing but air and Lena Oberdorf's subsequent effort was blocked.

Popp, who scored two goals against the Moroccans, should have added to her tournament tally in the 42nd minute but blazed her volley high and wide from close range.

Colombia continued to launch the ball forward to their front players at every opportunity but it was not until seven minutes after the break that they were able to break the stalemate.

Showing no sign of the nerves that her coach said were behind her collapse on Thursday, the 18-year-old Caicedo gathered the ball on the left edge of the box, cut back between two defenders and curled it into the top right-hand corner.

The stadium exploded with noise as the diminutive teenager celebrated her second goal at the tournament, having become the youngest player to score in this World Cup with a similar effort in the 2-0 opening win over South Korea.

Germany continued to spurn what chances they created but, with two minutes left on the clock, Oberdorf was brought down in the box by Perez and Popp stepped up to thump the ball confidently into the net.

The 27th-ranked Colombians now need only a draw against Morocco in their final Group H match to be certain of reaching the last 16, while Germany are still likely to progress if they beat South Korea in their last fixture.

Women's World Cup: Series of upsets continue as Colombia stun Germany 2-1

Sophie Roman Haug scored a hat-trick as Norway put a turbulent two weeks behind them and squeaked into the knockout stages of the Women's World Cup on goal difference on Sunday with a 6-0 thrashing of the Philippines at Eden Park. Winger Caroline Graham Hansen and Guro Reiten also scored to help the 1995 champions finish in second place in Group A, above co-hosts New Zealand, with their first win of the tournament.

The Philippines, who finished bottom of the group despite their first World Cup win over New Zealand, ended the match with 10 players after defender Sofia Harrison was shown a red card in the 67th minute for a foul on Thea Bjelde.

"We felt it was us against the world today and we performed from the very start, delivering when we really had to," said Norway coach Hege Riise. "This was the best response we could have given the Norwegian people and ourselves."

With their tournament on the line, Norway looked like they meant business from the start. They opened the scoring in the sixth minute when right back Bjelde lofted the ball to Roman Haug, who finished from a tight angle with a sensational volley. Roman Haug made it two in the 17th minute when she powered a perfectly placed header in off a deep pass from midfielder Vilde Boe Risa.

Graham Hansen sent one past diving Philippines goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel from outside the box in the 31st minute, justifying her place in the starting team after being controversially benched for Norway's previous match.

Things went from bad to worse for the Philippines when fullback Alicia Barker put the ball into her own net three minutes into the second half and Reiten converted a penalty five minutes later.

"We really released the pressure valve early and allowed them to sort of be even a little bit more creative as the game went on," said Philippines coach Alen Stajcic.

"I'm proud of the heart and spirit of our team. They fought to the end, they fought to the death."

Roman Haug got her third goal with a well-placed header in second-half stoppage time off an assist from Reiten.

"Leading 3-0 at halftime allowed us let our shoulders down and enjoy the second half, which is not something you can do very often in a World Cup match," said Graham Hansen. "We put everything else aside. This was a team victory today and shows we're a united team."

Norway finished second in Group A behind Switzerland, who held New Zealand to a scoreless draw in Sunday's other match. The Swiss and the Norwegians will play either Spain or Japan in the last 16.

Norway reach Women's World Cup knockout stage with 6-0 win over Philippines

New Zealand and Switzerland played out an underwhelming 0-0 stalemate in the Women's World Cup on Sunday, sending the co-hosts out of the tournament on goal difference and the Europeans through to the last 16 as Group A winners.

Norway's 6-0 thrashing of the Philippines in the other group game in Auckland put them level on four points with New Zealand but second on goal difference.
The results meant New Zealand, who stunned Norway in their opening match before losing to the Philippines in their second, became the first Women's World Cup hosts to exit in the group stage.

Roared on by a near-capacity crowd of 25,947 at the indoor Dunedin Stadium, New Zealand lacked nothing in effort but could not find the goal they needed to progress, with several players in tears at the final whistle.

"I can't ask any more of the players. There's a lot of tears out there but they should be so proud," New Zealand co-captain Ali Riley said. "We fought really hard... There's such disappointment but I want everyone to be proud of what we've achieved.

"I really think that we've inspired the country. I hope that little girls across New Zealand and the world now will start playing sport and feel like they can achieve whatever they put their mind to and just dream bigger.

"I just hope that this opens so many doors and opportunities for young girls. We wanted to inspire, we wanted to honour the Ferns that came before us and this team did that. I'm so proud of them."

Switzerland started the match on the front foot and midfielder Ramona Bachmann skipped past several defenders before her shot was blocked, but they were unable to keep the momentum going while New Zealand gradually upped the tempo.

Jacqui Hand and Olivia Chance both hit the post while Katie Bowen's shot was blocked as New Zealand pushed for an opener and looked more likely to score.
Switzerland looked more comfortable after the break, with Seraina Piubel slicing a left-footed shot wide off the mark before being ruled offside, while New Zealand struggled in the final third.

Malia Steinmetz's weak strike from the edge of the penalty area was saved as New Zealand became increasingly frantic in their efforts -- goalkeeper Victoria Esson came up the pitch and headed wide in the closing minutes -- but Switzerland hung on and saw out the draw.

Switzerland and Norway will face either Spain or Japan, who play their Group C decider on Monday, for a place in the quarter-finals.

"I know (it's) super emotional now because everybody's disappointed about the result but this team can be so proud," New Zealand coach Jitka Klimkova said. "There are so many positives that we are taking away from the whole experience.

"Our crowd showed how much they care... I feel that the nation is behind us and I really am thankful for that because they are part of this journey and part of us."

Morocco won a Women's World Cup match for the first time after Ibtissam Jraidi struck early to give them a stunning 1-0 victory over South Korea on Sunday.

Having been thrashed 6-0 by Germany on their World Cup debut, this hard-earned win kept alive Morocco's unlikely chances of reaching the last 16 in Australia and New Zealand.

As well as a first victory ever at the tournament, there was another piece of history for Morocco when defender Nouhaila Benzina became the first player to wear a hijab at the Women's World Cup.

French coach Reynald Pedros saw his Morocco team take the lead after only six minutes in front of just over 13,000 fans in Adelaide.

Hanane Ait El Haj crossed and forward Jraidi nipped in ahead of her marker to expertly glance her header into the far corner.

Morocco, one of the lowest-ranked teams at the tournament at 72 in the world, were supposed underdogs against the 17th-ranked Koreans.

But they made by far the better start against shell-shocked opponents.

Colin Bell's Korean side belatedly grew into the game towards the end of the first half, but like in their 2-0 opening defeat to Colombia, they lacked punch up front.

Many of the crowd were shouting for the Koreans and their team piled on the pressure in the second half as they attempted to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Going into the nervy final 10 minutes, South Korea had had 10 attempts at goal -- none of which were on target.

Morocco were grimly hanging on.

The Koreans had three players on two as they raced towards Morocco's goal, only for Benzina to cynically clip an advancing Korean attacker and earn a yellow card.

Bell threw on attacker Casey Phair, the United States-born 16-year-old who is the youngest player ever to feature at a Women's World Cup.

But Morocco held on for a gritty win that left South Korea facing an early exit from Group H.

FIFA Women's WC: Morocco create history, beat South Korea for maiden win in World Cup

On Thursday (July 27), it became official that England midfielder and Liverpool star Jordan Herderson has moved to the Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Henderson had already shared a heartfelt post before both clubs made it official on Thursday.&nbsp;

With this came the end of Henderson's run in the Reds, where he spent 12 years and featured in&nbsp;nearly 500 games across&nbsp;competitions, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reacted to Henderson's move and said 'it is sad, absolutely strange'.

<h2>'We will miss him as a man and as a player'</h2>

On Liverpool's official website, Klopp pointed out, "It's sad, absolutely strange, because he is the only captain I had here at Liverpool, but I think it is exciting for him as well. We will miss him, without a shadow of a doubt, that's clear - as a man and as a player. But, as I said, that's football."

Klopp further opined, "Hendo is a really good package, a really good package. There is the physical part, but there is the super-technical part. He is technically really, really good. You cannot have this amount of Premier League games, you cannot be captain of Liverpool, you cannot play in the most important games in the world if you are technically not on a super-high level - and he is. Right foot, left foot really good."

"Let me say, this midfield Fabinho, Hendo, Gini and then Millie, these four for three positions, I think nobody would have said it would be a successful midfield because something is lacking - but nothing was lacking because the boys were all a real package. That's what was so good and Hendo was a super-important part of that," he added.

It is to be noted that&nbsp;Al-Ettifaq would be paying about 12 million pounds ($15.55 million) along with&nbsp;add-ons for the former Liverpool captain Henderson, as per reports in the British media.

The 33-year-old, who is set to don&nbsp;the number 10 shirt in his new club, is expected to receive a whopping weekly salary of approximately 700,000 pounds, as per reports, in Al-Ettifaq. He has signed a three-year deal with the club, who finished seventh in the top-tier Saudi Pro League last season.

Recently, Steven Gerrard -- another Liverpool legend -- also joined Al-Ettifaq as the manager.

'We will miss him': Jurgen Klopp reacts as Jordan Henderson leaves Liverpool to join Saudi club Al-Ettifaq

European champions England stood on the brink of the Women's World Cup last 16 after a Lauren James cracker in the sixth minute gave them a 1-0 win over Denmark on Friday. But an otherwise hugely satisfactory night for England in front of just over 40,000 fans in Sydney was marred by what looked like a serious knee injury to influential midfielder Keira Walsh.

On a night of mixed emotions, Sarina Wiegman's side will seal their place in the knockout rounds if Asian champions China fail to beat debutants Haiti later Friday. Denmark might have stolen a point with three minutes left in normal time when, despite having as little as 20 per cent of the possession for much of the game, Amalie Vangsgaard shaved the outside of the England post with a header.

Wiegman made two changes from the team that squeezed past Haiti 1-0 in their opener, Rachel Daly and James coming into the starting XI. And it was the 21-year-old Chelsea forward James who was the star of the first half, before fading in the second.

She needed just six minutes to justify her inclusion, drifting off the left into the middle, skipping past a weak challenge and bending the ball with her right foot into the bottom corner from outside the box. James, sister of Chelsea's England men's international Reece James, was everywhere.

Twice in a minute she threatened another as England -- wearing black armbands in memory of former international Trevor Francis, who died this week aged 69 -- went in search of a second. Yet for all that, Denmark nearly equalised with their first chance on 24 minutes when Rikke Marie Madsen took the ball inside the area on the turn and flashed just wide of the far post.

The Danes, ranked 13th&nbsp;in the world to England's fourth, were a threat on the break. Skipper Pernille Harder shot straight at goalkeeper Mary Earps as Denmark carved out three decent looks at goal within a few minutes.

A night that had been going so well for the Lionesses then suffered a significant setback when Walsh, a key cog in the team that won the Euro last year, tumbled over and appeared to have badly hurt her knee. She was stretchered off in tears and replaced by Laura Coombs seven minutes before half-time, a question mark now hanging over the rest of the Barcelona player's World Cup.

England were already missing captain Leah Williamson and Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner Beth Mead, both ruled out before the tournament with knee injuries. The second half was more of the same: England with most of the chances and possession, but Denmark looking to hit on the break.

That is what they did when Vangsgaard darted into the six-yard box, her header centimetres from snatching a point. In the final round of Group D games on Tuesday, England face China and Denmark play Haiti.

Football: England beat Denmark to stand on verge of FIFA World Cup last 16

Nigeria produced the first major shock of the Women's World Cup as they stunned Australia 3-2 on Thursday to leave the co-hosts' tournament hopes on thin ice. Asisat Oshoala volleyed into an open goal in the 72nd minute to seal a deserved win for the Africans after Uchenna Kanu cancelled out Emily van Egmond's opener on the cusp of halftime and Osinachi Ohale nudged Nigeria ahead after the break.

Australia cut the deficit to one goal when Alanna Kennedy nodded home a header in the 10th minute of stoppage time but Nigeria rode out the final seconds to claim one of their finest wins in their ninth appearance at the global showpiece. The win in front of a huge crowd at Lang Park put Nigeria top of Group B level with Canada on four points but ahead on goal difference. The 11-time African champions play eliminated Ireland in their last group match.

Women's World Cup: MAJOR UPSET! Nigeria stun event co-hosts Australia 3-2

Portugal's Telma Encarnacao scored one goal and set up the other in a 2-0 win over fellow Women's World Cup debutants Vietnam, sending the Southeast Asian side out of the tournament at Waikato Stadium on Thursday. Portugal are third in Group E with three points and will face the U.S. in their final group game in Auckland while Vietnam, yet to score or pick up a point, take on the Netherlands in Dunedin. Both matches will be played on Tuesday.

The U.S. are level on four points with the Netherlands but top the table on goal difference after the teams drew 1-1 earlier on Thursday. Portugal coach Francisco Neto made seven changes to the team that lost 1-0 to the Netherlands in their Group E opener and the decision paid off as first-half goals from Encarnacao and Francisca Nazareth earned them a first-ever World Cup win.

Neto will be thrilled with Thursday's accomplished performance as Portugal dazzled under the floodlights - a stark contrast to their struggling first display - although the scoreline did not reflect their dominance. Encarnacao swept Portugal in front after seven minutes with a smart first-time finish from Lucia Alves' cross before turning provider for Nazareth, who fired the ball past goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh in the 21st minute.

Only 11 places separate the two teams in the world rankings, with Portugal sitting higher at 21, but the contest was one-sided and the Europeans were firmly on top throughout with five attempts on target in the first half alone. They could not add more gloss to the result, however, as Kim Thanh, who helped restrict holders the United States to three goals in Vietnam's opening defeat, was once again key in ensuring they did not concede more than two.

However, despite Kim Thanh's efforts, Vietnam struggled to create chances and managed only one shot on target in the match when Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy drew a save from Patricia Morais just before the break.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Portugal beat Vietnam 2-0 for first win in mega event

An accurate toe-poke by forward Adriana Leon coupled with a touch of fortune allowed Canada to secure a 2-1 victory against Ireland on Wednesday, their first of this year's Women's World Cup, in wet and windy conditions at Perth Oval.

Fresh off a scoreless draw with Nigeria, Canada put themselves ahead in the match when Leon found the back of the net in the 53rd minute as her side increasingly exerted their dominance over a plucky Irish outfit. In an exciting first half that had attacking play at both ends, Ireland captain Katie McCabe opened the scoring with a fourth minute corner that curled through the air and into the net, giving the girls in green their first-ever World Cup goal.

Canada worked diligently but failed to convert their first genuine chance in the 30th minute when Vanessa Gilles put too much on a chip within the six-yard box. Some luck fell the way of the Olympic champions, though, when they equalised on the cusp of halftime, a powerful cross from midfielder Julia Grosso deflecting off Ireland's Megan Connolly for an own goal in driving rain.

The second half grew into an arm-wrestle, but McCabe battled hard and created two opportunities late in the game which missed the target. The 40-year-old Christine Sinclair, brought on after the break, found few chances near goal and will have to wait until Canada's clash with co-hosts Australia in Melbourne on Monday to potentially become the first player to score at six World Cups.

Ireland, who cannot progress to the knockout stage having also lost their opener against Australia, play their final match against Nigeria in Brisbane.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Canada find their feet in 2-1 win over gutsy Ireland; Irish team eliminated

Former Liverpool player Ryan Babel recently opened up on Steven Gerrard's surprising move to manage Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Babel, who shared the Liverpool dressing room with Gerrard, feels there is a trend&nbsp;of young managers and former players entering the managerial world. He believes this&nbsp;might have played a part in Gerrard's mind to consider switching&nbsp;to the Saudi.

"Initially, of course, it is surprising [that he went to manage there]. Overall if you look at especially English managers, they tend to stay in England, but at the same time, I feel like we are entering in a new wave of new managers, right? Young managers, former players," Babel said while speaking on talkSPORT.

He further added, "Look, at the end of the day we don’t know if Steven Gerrard had a lot of possibilities at this very moment, but I feel like as a manager if you’re out of the picture for too long maybe the door is slowly getting shut on you for these types of opportunities. Maybe it was one of those things he felt like ‘Hey, I want to stay busy, I’m still young, this is right now the opportunity I’ve got so let’s grab it'."

Backing Babel's point of view, there is a huge influx of players and young managers in the Saudi Pro League, mainly due to financial gains. While English managers mostly prefer to stay in their home country, Gerrard's move might have come as a surprise but it can surely be seen as the beginning of a new trend. Much of this will depend on how he progresses&nbsp;in managing&nbsp;Al-Ettifaq.

<h2>'When I went to Saudi I got a real family feeling'</h2>

On being a part of the Saudi club, Gerrard told Al-Ettifaq's Twitter account on July 23 (Sunday), "When I went to Saudi I got a real family feeling. It made me actually feel welcomed. There are three things I always consider in order -- it needs to be right for my family first and foremost. We have to be excited and motivated by the challenge."

"Secondly I think the football project needs to be ambitious, it needs to be for the right reasons, and then of course you need to feel secure with the contract, but this comes at the very end," he stated.

In recent times, Cristiano Ronaldo (Al-Nassr), Karim Benzeme (Al-Ittihad), etc. have moved to the Saudi League. Even&nbsp;Robbie Fowler, a former teammate of Gerrard,&nbsp;recently took over as the coach of the Saudi second-division team Al-Qadsiah.&nbsp;

All eyes are now on Gerrard and how Al-Ettifaq fares under his guidance. In the last season, they ended seventh in the top-tier Saudi&nbsp;League.

'It is.....' Ryan Babel reacts to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard's move to Saudi as Al-Ettifaq manager

Catalina Usme and Linda Caicedo scored to give Colombia a 2-0 victory over South Korea in their opening game of the Women's World Cup on Tuesday, denying the Koreans what would have been only their second win in four appearances at the tournament. Usme scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute after a South Korean handball, sending keeper Yoon Younggeul the wrong way before slotting the ball into the far corner. Caicedo, an 18-year-old forward for Real Madrid, doubled Colombia's lead nine minutes later, launching a high shot that Yoon got her hands on, but without the power to send it over the bar. The ball squirted into the net, to the delight of the yellow-clad Colombian fans at Sydney Football Stadium.

"Well, I am extremely happy, but this has to do with the collective work of everyone," Caicedo said on her first World Cup goal. "The feeling the group had going onto the pitch we were a bit anxious, we wanted the World Cup to start, and we wanted to start off on the right foot, this was something crucial. Very happy for the goal and the victory."

Korea's American-born teenager Casey Phair became the youngest player to take the field in Women's World Cup history, subbing on in the 78th minute, just 26 days after her 16th birthday. Colombia was without their head coach Nelson Abadia, who was suspended by FIFA through his team's first two games, reportedly for an infraction at the 2015 World Cup, Colombia's last appearance.

It was the final game of the opening round of group matches and the 300th match in Women's World Cup history. Korea nearly pulled one back just before halftime when Lee Guimmen's close-range header off a terrific cross from Choe Yuri forced keeper Catalina Perez to make a diving save.

But Colombia, who reached the round of 16 at the 2015 World Cup, dominated possession, slicing through South Korea's defence with ease. They threatened to pad their lead with several in the dying minutes when Mayra Ramirez sent a great cross to a wide-open Caicedo, who hesitated too long. Tuesday's attendance was 24,323 with fans banging drums and tooting horns all game long.

"It's a magnificent stadium, that atmosphere it's close, it's tight to the pitch, it's what every player wants, what every fan wants, and so many people came and watched us today," said Korea's British coach Colin Bell. "When you lose it's not so nice but I'll treasure this moment for the rest of my life, my first World Cup match. "You're up, you're down, you're up, you're down, that's football. We love it."

Colombia face two-time champions Germany on Sunday. The Germans opened their campaign with a 6-0 rout of debutantes Morocco on Monday. South Korea take on Morocco on Sunday.

Women's World Cup: Catalina Usme, Linda Caicedo score to help Colombia beat South Korea 2-0

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two of the greatest footballers of all time and have won the top individual prize in domestic football, Ballon d’Or, several times. Since making their respective debuts in the early 2000s, Messi and Ronaldo achieved unbelievable success and won everything that was there to win at the top level. While fans of the two players continue to argue over who is the greatest of them, tennis legend Rafael Nadal has revealed his favourite.&nbsp;

Currently on vacation as he continues to recover from arthroscopic surgery for a left hip flexor injury, Nadal, while strolling down the street, came across a group of fans who asked him an impromptu question – who is better between the two footballers? Nadal, who looked in a hurry, said he feels Messi is better but that he is a Real Madrid fan.

Lionel Messi&nbsp;left his first major club FC Barcelona in 2021 owing to LA Liga rules around salary caps and joined French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a two-year deal. Following the fallout with PSG over his unauthorised trip to Saudi for commercial commitment around April this year, Messi decided to leave them.

When the summer transfer window opened, Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami announced Messi’s signing, stunning everyone, with several reports suggesting Messi was keen on returning to Camp Nou for his final European run.&nbsp;

While that didn’t happen, Messi made his MLS debut last Friday against Cruz Azul. He came off the bench to score a 94th-minute winner in the Leagues Cup opener.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two of the greatest footballers of all time and have won the top individual prize in domestic football, Ballon d’Or, several times. Since making their respective debuts in the early 2000s, Messi and Ronaldo achieved unbelievable success and won everything that was there to win at the top level. While fans of the two players continue to argue over who is the greatest of them, tennis legend Rafael Nadal has revealed his favourite. Currently on vacation as he continues to recover from arthroscopic surgery for a left hip flexor injury, Nadal, while strolling down the street, came across a group of fans who asked him an impromptu question – who is better between the two footballers? Nadal, who looked in a hurry, said he feels Messi is better but that he is a Real Madrid fan. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE – Rafa Nadal: “Messi or Ronaldo? Ary Borges hit the first hat-trick of this Women's World Cup as Brazil crushed debutants Panama 4-0 in a scintillating opening to their campaign on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Far tougher challenges lie ahead -- they face France next -- but this was an impressive start for a Brazil side who have featured at all eight previous Women's World Cups but never won it.

The stylish victory in Adelaide sent Brazil top of Group F after Jamaica surprisingly held France 0-0 on Sunday.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder Borges, who plays for Racing Louisville in the United States, was the undoubted star of the show, scoring three and setting up the other.

A constant threat coming in off the right, she pounced twice from close range in the first half to leave Brazil in total control at the break and Panama never looked like getting back in it.

Some of the Panama players and fans were in tears during their national anthem, underlining what it means to them to be at the World Cup for the first time.

But this was a debut they will probably want to forget as Swedish coach Pia Sundhage's Brazil put on an exhibition of flowing, attacking football.

They racked up five attempts on goal in the opening 10 minutes and the pressure told in the 19th minute when Borges nodded in unmarked at the back post for a simple close-range header.

Six minutes before the break she scored her second. Panama goalkeeper Yenith Bailey saved her initial downward header but the rebound went right back to Borges and she slammed the ball into the net.

Any hope Panama had of getting back into the match was extinguished only three minutes into the second half and it was the best goal of the tournament so far.

A fluid team move took the ball to the ever-dangerous Borges, who rolled the ball behind her with her studs, allowing Bia Zaneratto to fire into the back of the net.

Borges put the seal on a hugely impressive personal and team performance by nodding in her third -- and Brazil's fourth -- 20 minutes from time, the ball flying through the middle of Bailey's legs.

The 37-year-old forward Marta, arguably the greatest women's footballer of all time, came off the bench for Brazil in the closing stages but will have to wait a while longer if she is to become the first player to score at six World Cups.

Cristiana Girelli came off the bench to score an 87th-minute winner over Argentina as Italy began their Women's World Cup with a 1-0 victory in a feisty encounter at Eden Park on Monday.&nbsp; It looked like Italy would have to settle for a draw in their Group G opener after Arianna Caruso and Valentina Giacinti both had goals disallowed in the first half.

But Girelli, the Juventus veteran who was Italy's top scorer in qualifying, came on for 16-year-old Giulia Dragoni near the end and needed just four minutes to make her mark with a superb header.

Argentina coach German Portanova felt it was harsh on his side, who still have not won at a World Cup.

"It was a very even match," he said. "At times we controlled it and they did not have many opportunities. "The result was somewhat unfair. A draw would have been the right score."

The win for Italy in front of almost 31,000 fans in Auckland sets them up perfectly for their next game, against group favourites Sweden in Wellington on Saturday.

It looked set to be a frustrating evening for Italy as both Caruso and Giacinti had goals ruled out for offside in the first half.

Argentina might even have gone in front just after the restart when an Eliana Stabile free-kick from wide on the left almost caught out goalkeeper Francesca Durante.

When a Manuela Giugliano free-kick whistled just over at the other end midway through the second half, after captain Barbara Bonansea had been chopped down, it seemed as if the game would end goalless.

But then Girelli, who scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Jamaica at the last World Cup, entered the fray in the 83rd minute.

Moments later the 33-year-old got up above Stabile to score with a header from Lisa Boattin's left-wing cross.

Italy then held on for the victory, with Durante having to make another important save in stoppage time to keep out a free-kick by Florencia Bonsegundo.

Women's World Cup: Italy's Cristiana Girelli comes off bench to score 87th minute winner against Argentina

Philippines women's soccer coach Alen Stajcic embraces the opportunity to play host New Zealand's&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Ferns at the Women's World Cup on Tuesday, saying the bigger crowd, the better - no matter who they are cheering for. "Traditionally, being a host nation or home team in any game of&nbsp;football&nbsp;has been an advantage," Stajcic said on the eve of the Philippines' game at Wellington Regional Stadium. "Fortunately, we don't have to play against 25,000 people, we only have to play against the 11.

"And almost on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have to embrace it. It's a brilliant occasion for&nbsp;football&nbsp;and for New Zealand and for our team and our country as well." New Zealand's 26th-ranked&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Ferns drew 42,137 fans to Auckland's Eden Park on Thursday, more than double the previous record crowd for a women's soccer game in the country. The fans were rewarded with a stunning 1-0 victory over Norway.

The 46th-ranked Philippines, who opened their tournament with a 2-0 loss to Switzerland, are one of the eight teams making their Women's World Cup debut. Stajcic, an Australian who previously coached the Central Coast Mariners of the men's A-League, applauded the crowd of just under 40,000 that watched Jamaica and France play to a 0-0 draw in Sydney on Sunday.

"It's amazing," said Stajcic, who coached Australia's women's team from 2014 to 2019. "Football&nbsp;in all our countries is not number one, in the Philippines, New Zealand or Australia. So we need to do everything we can to also (get) the support for the sport for women's&nbsp;football, and make sure we use these moments and treasure them and really build on them."

Stajcic's Filipinas are unique in the diversity of their squad. Midfielder Anicka Castaneda is the lone home-grown talent among the 23. Eighteen players are from the United States, two are from Norway and one each from Canada and Australia. Fifteen players including Katrina Guillou, who had a goal disallowed as offside against Switzerland, have U.S. National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division 1 experience.

"Definitely a great experience for myself," said Guillou, who was born in Washington, D.C. and played at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. "The way the (NCAA) season is, everything so condensed into a three-month span, playing two games every week. I think it really helps build the stamina that's needed." The Philippines lost 2-1 to New Zealand in a friendly in September, and Stajcic said that narrow loss was a turning point for his programme.

"It was a really pivotal moment," he said. "That game was a real turning point for the team for me to know that we can rise to this level. "As to whether we can do it (Tuesday) or not, we want to crash (New Zealand's) party and it's not really their party. It's everyone's party. It's our party as well."

The police have arrested a 34-year-old for burglary and arson, reported the Associated Press. It, however, remains unclear if the incident is related to the ongoing world cup.

CJ Bott, a defender with the football Ferns, said that some players did encounter smoke but everybody made it out safely in the end. The players spent a few hours at a nearby restaurant while the fire was brought under control, added Bott as reported by the Associated Press.

"Yeah, one of the fire exits was a bit smoky but the majority of us got down the other safe exit and we exited the building perfectly fine," said Bott.

FIFA Women's WC: NZ players 'safe' following fire at team hotel

Lionel Messi should make his debut for Inter Miami against Mexican club Cruz Azul on Friday but the seven-times Ballon d'Or winner may be limited to a role off the bench.

The Argentine arrived in South Florida last week to a wave of enthusiasm and was presented to fans at a special stadium event on Sunday. But since the initial hype, when club owner Jorge Mas described him as "America's number 10" and promised the move would "change the football landscape" in the USA, there has been a noticeable change of tone.

Messi only started training in earnest this week after spending time with his family on vacation and the opening game of the new Leagues Cup -- which pits MLS and Liga MX teams together in a tournament format -- may come too soon for the World Cup champion to start.

Co-owner David Beckham said on Tuesday that Messi will play "some part of the game" and coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino, Messi's compatriot and former Barcelona coach, had suggested he might start on the bench.

At the pre-match press conference, moved to the downtown performing arts centre in Fort Lauderdale due to the huge media interest, Martino said they would make a decision on how to use Messi after training on Friday.

"It is very difficult for people not to have expectations,” said Martino, "But it may take a while."

Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, a former team-mate of Messi's from their glory days with Barcelona, certainly doesn't feel ready yet for a full game in what will also be his debut.

"I need time to adapt. It would be practically impossible for me to play 90 minutes tomorrow," he said.

The fact that fans have paid around $250 for tickets for what has long been billed as Messi's debut, means that he almost certainly will enter the field at some stage however.

Cruz Azul's experienced coach, the Brazilian born Ricardo Ferretti, laughed when asked whether his team expected to face Messi.

"If he didn't play... it would be better. But, they also have to think about something, why are there so many people here? Because of him, right?" said the 69-year-old.

But Ferretti, known as "Tuca" throughout his career as a coach in Mexico, was a little irked that the game between the two teams was being viewed purely as the debut of one player.

"We will not face a single player. He does not win or lose alone. Soccer is a team sport. There are players who stand out and deserve emphasis, I agree with that," he added.

"There are two institutions here - Cruz Azul is a historic team, one of the greats of Mexican football and Inter Miami is an important team in MLS," he added.

The Inter Miami players who haven't been making the headlines in recent days, have had a strange week with over 200 media turning out to film their training session on Tuesday.

<h2>A great team-mate&nbsp;</h2>

But DeAndre Yedlin, the USA international who played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, said Messi has quickly fit into the dressing room.

"He's a great team-mate. For the (presentation) event he had on Sunday, (striker Leonardo) Campana was looking for tickets and so he put it in the group chat, I didn't even know that Messi was in the group chat yet but he popped up straight away and said 'how many do you need Leo?'

"Straight of the bat like that, they've known each other for like two or three days but just to show that generosity is a great first example of how he is," he said.

Martino said that Messi looks happy in training and has noticed that he seems more relaxed having finally won a World Cup with his country.

"Leo is without a huge backpack that he had, and he took it off seven months ago. I think we are in a great moment," the coach said.

Busquets, who has been joined by another former Barca team-mate in defender Jordi Alba, who signed for the club on Thursday, said it was great to be reunited with Messi.

"I'm very happy to enjoy Leo as a teammate again, we parted ways, but time gives us the opportunity to get back together, he is a great person.

"We are looking forward to playing with the best player in the history of football, I am very happy for everything, hopefully we can take what we did now to Inter Miami."

Lionel Messi should make his debut for Inter Miami against Mexican club Cruz Azul on Friday but the seven-times Ballon d'Or winner may be limited to a role off the bench.

ALSO READ: Women's World Cup: Steph Catley penalty gives Sam Kerr-less Australia winning start, 1-0 win over Ireland Co-owner David Beckham said on Tuesday that Messi will play "some part of the game" and coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino, Messi's compatriot and former Barcelona coach, had suggested he might start on the bench. At the pre-match press conference, moved to the downtown performing arts centre in Fort Lauderdale due to the huge media interest, Martino said they would make a decision on how to use Messi after training on Friday. "It is very difficult for people not to have expectations,” said Martino, "But it may take a while." Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, a former team-mate of Messi's from their glory days with Barcelona, certainly doesn't feel ready yet for a full game in what will also be his debut. A great team-mate But DeAndre Yedlin, the USA international who played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, said Messi has quickly fit into the dressing room. "He's a great team-mate. For the (presentation) event he had on Sunday, (striker Leonardo) Campana was looking for tickets and so he put it in the group chat, I didn't even know that Messi was in the group chat yet but he popped up straight away and said 'how many do you need Leo?' "Straight of the bat like that, they've known each other for like two or three days but just to show that generosity is a great first example of how he is," he said. Martino said that Messi looks happy in training and has noticed that he seems more relaxed having finally won a World Cup with his country.
