Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie saved a penalty to help Nigeria secure a valuable 0-0 draw against Olympic champions Canada in their Women's World Cup opener on Friday in a result that threw the group wide open.

Nnadozie denied Christine Sinclair from the spot in the 50th minute with a low dive to her left as the Canada skipper missed out on becoming the first player to score in six World Cups in front of 21,000 fans at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. At the end of a scrappy, bruising contest, Nigeria were down to 10 via a late red card and both teams earned a point to trail Group B leaders Australia by two following the co-hosts' 1-0 win over Ireland on Thursday.

"We've got to move on very quickly, you know, you can get lost and be really down on that," said Canada coach Bev Priestman, whose team next faces Ireland in Perth on Wednesday. "Of course the team and I am devastated. We didn't get three points. But at the end of the day we got one and we took two from another team."

Both sides had their chances but 40-year-old Sinclair, who came off ashen-faced in the 70th minute, was perhaps the most frustrated, having also missed a good opportunity when she fired wide in the ninth minute. Nigeria, the lowest-ranked team in the group, defended desperately to hold out the Canadians, and a roaring Nnadozie slumped to her knees, pumping her fists in celebration after the final whistle.

"I’m probably going to embarrass her, but I think she’s one of the best young goalkeepers in the world today," said Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum. "I think Chiamaka's save really kind of lit the fire and made us realise there's still something to play for."

Nigeria's joy was tempered by a red card, upgraded from yellow by VAR, for midfielder Deborah Abiodun after a studs-up tackle deep in stoppage time. She will miss their next game against Australia. Canada's midfield dynamo Jessie Fleming was ruled out injured before the match and her absence contributed to the team's clunky transition play.

Sinclair, however, found space on the edge of the area early and blasted wide of the right post, with Jordyn Huitema heading well wide later in the first half. The Africans also struggled on attack, but Ifeoma Onumonu forced goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan into a diving save at the far post after unloading from long range in the 23rd minute.

Sheridan came close to gifting Nigeria the lead when she charged off her line 10 minutes from the break, missing the ball with her attempted clearance. But Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala's cross at the near post was blocked and both teams went to the break frustrated.

Canada's frustration spiked after the interval as Sinclair was brought down in the box by Francisca Ordega, the penalty awarded by VAR. Nnadozie blocked Sinclair's tepid shot and later denied substitute Evelyne Viens, who latched onto a header in the area and volleyed straight into the keeper's arms.

Former Manchester United footballer and ex-Wales manager Ryan Giggs was on Tuesday (July 18) cleared of teh allegations of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her sister. The development comes as a huge relief for the ex-footballer after charges were pulled out by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) at a hearing at Manchester Crown Court.

The 48-year-old Giggs had denied all such claims of assaulting Kate Greville and her sister Emma. Judge Hilary Manley directed that he was not guilty on all three counts. It is to be noted that the&nbsp;retrial had been due to kick off at Manchester Crown Court on 31 July.

Giggs was cleared of all charges after Kate Greville withdrew her co-operation from the case ahead of a scheduled re-trial in two weeks' time.&nbsp;Giggs had faced up to five years in jail if convicted. Jurors failed to agree on their verdicts following a trial held last August.

Giggs was not in court when the decision was announced.

In August 2022, the jurors failed to reach verdicts after more than 20 hours of deliberations in Giggs' four-week trial. Back then, the judge had given his consent that the ex-Wales manager does not need to be in attendance for the deliberations.

Giggs' defence barrister, Chris Daw KC stated after the latest decision,&nbsp;"Mr Giggs is deeply relieved that the case has finally come to an end after almost three years of fighting to clear his name. He now intends to rebuild his life and career as an innocent man."

The Red Devils' legend Giggs did admit that he was unfaithful in his relationship with Kate, however, he denied accepting charges of physically assaulting any woman. After a lengthy court battle, Giggs has finally been acquitted of all the charges and will be a relieved man. The former football is regarded as one of the finest of Man United, having made as many as 963 appearances for them and scoring 168 goals. He also represented Wales in 64 games and went on to serve as their manager for an interim period before being arrested in June 2022 with regard to the serious charges put forward by his ex-girlfriend.

Portugal skipper and Al Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo has said that Saudi league is better than USA's Major League Soccer (MLS). Ronaldo made the statement while talking to reporters after playing in the first half of Saudi club's 5-0 loss in a pre-season game against Celta Vigo.

The match between Al Nassr and La Liga club was played in Ronaldo's home country of Portugal. The football star also said that he has no plans to return to a European club or play in MLS. Ronaldo's contemporary Lionel Messi, notably, has recently joined MLS club Inter Miami in a two-year deal.&nbsp;

"I opened the way to the Saudi league, and now all the players are coming here," said Ronaldo.

After Ronaldo, a number of marquee players have joined Saudi clubs this summer. Notable among them are Karim Benzama, Marcelo Brozovic and N'Golo Kante.

Roberto Firmino. Brozovic, who used to play for Messi-starred Inter Miami, will now play alongside Ronaldo at Al Nassr.

"In one year, more and more top players will come to Saudi. In a year, the Saudi league will overtake the Turkish league and Dutch league," Ronaldo added.

The Portugal star had joined the Saudi-based club in January following his sour departure from English Premier League (EPL) club Manchester United. It was Ronaldo's second stint with the United.

Ronaldo also said that European clubs have lost a lot of quality and only decent league is the Premier League.

"I'm 100 per cent sure I won't return to any European club," Ronaldo said. "I'm 38 years old. And European football has lost a lot of quality. The only valid one and still doing good is the Premier League. They're way ahead of all the other leagues."

Ronaldo, who was substituted at end of first half during the game against Celta Vigo, plans to play for 60-70 minutes in Al Nassar's next friendly against Benfica. The match will also be played in Portugal.

"The plan was for me to play 45 minutes today," Ronaldo said. "Against Benfica, I might play 60 or 70 minutes. It is better to fine-tune the machine little by little to reach the best form."

Football: Ronaldo has 'no plans to play in MLS,' says Saudi league 'much better'

Real&nbsp;Madrid closed the 2022-23 financial year with a 11.8 million euro ($13.25 million) profit, the Spanish club said on Monday, around one million euros less than in the previous season despite a higher revenue. The Spanish club managed to remain in profit over the last four financial years despite the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 893 million euros renovation project of their Bernabeu stadium, set to be concluded by the end of 2023.

"Operating income for the financial year 2022-23 has reached 843 million euros, an increase of 121 million euros (17%) compared to the 2021-22 financial year," the club said in a statement. They added, however, that stadium revenues, limited by the redevelopment project, were still 13% lower than in 2018-19 season but revenues from the remaining business lines have already exceeded pre-pandemic levels, with marketing revenues (up 12%) standing out in particular.

Madrid said their net worth is 558 million euros, 12 million more than last season, and their net debt, excluding the Bernabeu project, stood at 46.7 million euros as of June 30 2023.

That is a major improvement from last year, when their net debt was 263.1 million.

Real Madrid closed the 2022-23 financial year with a 11.8 million euro ($13.25 million) profit, the Spanish club said on Monday, around one million euros less than in the previous season despite a higher revenue. Real Madrid close 2022-23 financial year with 12 million euros profit

Australia's Matildas have released a video statement calling out gender disparity in World Cup prize money and voicing support for women players denied "the basic right" of collective bargaining in pay negotiations. The video, supported by Australia's professional players union, features every member of the co-hosts' Women's World Cup squad and comes amid pay disputes at multiple teams at the tournament starting on Thursday.

The Matildas went on strike in 2015 to demand better pay and have received the same minimum percentage of prize money for tournaments as the Australia national men's team, the Socceroos, since a 2019 collective bargaining agreement. Football: 'Totally committed' Kane wants to see a successful Spurs side, says manager Ange Postecoglou

Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets has signed a contract with Inter Miami that will see him reunited with Argentine superstar Lionel Messi through the 2025 season, the Major League Soccer club said Sunday. Inter had announced last month that they were acquiring Busquets, who will be reunited with his former Barcelona teammate Messi. The one-time World Cup champion, nine-time La Liga winner and former Barca captain will occupy a Designated Player slot and is expected to join the team "in the coming days," Inter said.

"I am excited to welcome Sergio Busquets to Inter Miami," managing owner Jorge Mas said in a statement.

"Since day one we have set out to bring the world's best players to Inter Miami. Sergio's repertoire speaks for itself."

<h2>Signing of a champion</h2>

Busquets, 34, said in May that he would leave Barcelona this year at the end of his contract. He made 134 appearances for Spain before announcing his retirement from the team in December. Busquets has been a central part of Barcelona's successes in the past 15 years, including three Champions League triumphs. Busquets played as pivot behind Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez in an iconic midfield trio, and the three of them also won the World Cup with Spain in 2010.

"He is one of the smartest players to ever play the sport," Inter's sporting director Chris Henderson said. "He reads the game at an unprecedented level and impacts every facet of play."

Busquets said the move offered a "special and exciting opportunity."

"I was impressed by the cub when I came with Barcelona last year and now I'm happy and ready to represent the club myself. I can't wait to help bring the success that this ambitious club strives for."

The signing comes a day after Messi inked the contract that has energized football fans in Miami and beyond, and on the same day that Inter planned to officially present him at an "unveiling" at the club's ground. Messi and Busquets arrive as Inter Miami have sunk to the very bottom of Major League Soccer. The club's winless run extended to 11 games with a 3-0 defeat at St. Louis City on Saturday -- their 14th defeat in 22 games. Miami are bottom of the Eastern Conference and their latest loss also left them in last place in the overall standings -- 29th of 29 clubs.

Messi has been expected to make his debut on Friday against Cruz Azul in the new Leagues Cup, a tournament featuring all the top-flight teams from MLS and Mexico's Liga MX. Inter said Busquets will first be available for the same game.

Football: Lionel Messi's former teammate Sergio Busquets joins him in Inter Miami

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane might join Bayern Munich this summer or at least this is what Bundesliga club's honorary president Ulli Hoeness thinks. Speaking to the reporters at the team's training camp, Hoeness said that the English striker has already decided to join the German club. The former Bayern president also said that talks regarding his transfer are on with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, reported news agency Associated Press.

"Up to now it was the case that Harry has clearly signalled in all the talks that his mind is made up. And if that remains the case, then we'll get him," Hoeness said. "Then Tottenham will have to give way."

Meanwhile, Tottenham has offered Harry a new contract but the striker is not willing to extend his stay with the English Premier League (EPL) club, reported ESPN, citing sources.

Amid the rumours of his departure, Hoeness said that Bayern's supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen are constantly in touch with the footballer and his agents.

Notably, Kane has only one year left on his contract with Hotspur.

The reason behind Hoeness' confidence is Kane's remaining contract duration with the Hotspur, as he&nbsp;thinks that the EPL club won't be able to decline $90-$100 million for the player. Hoeness also said that Kane wants to play in European conditions.

Bayern won the Bundesliga last season while Tottenham finished eighth in the Premier League.

"Now he has the chance again to come to a top club in Europe," Hoeness said. "What we all like is that he and his agents, his father and the brother, have always clearly stood by what they've said. If it stays like that, then that's OK."

Hoeness, however, agreed that discussions with Tottenham boss Levy are tricky.

"He's clever," Hoeness said. "He isn't naming a price. First of all, we have to bring him so far as to name a price. Of course, he's playing for time. He's savvy and, I find, a super professional, I really like him. But I think these are people who haven't just been doing this since yesterday."

"Then Tottenham will have to give way." Meanwhile, Tottenham has offered Harry a new contract but the striker is not willing to extend his stay with the English Premier League (EPL) club, reported ESPN, citing sources. The reason behind Hoeness' confidence is Kane's remaining contract duration with the Hotspur, as he thinks that the EPL club won't be able to decline $90-$100 million for the player. Hoeness also said that Kane wants to play in European conditions. Also Read: Olympic golf medalist Andy Cruz wins on pro boxing debut Bayern won the Bundesliga last season while Tottenham finished eighth in the Premier League. "Now he has the chance again to come to a top club in Europe," Hoeness said. "What we all like is that he and his agents, his father and the brother, have always clearly stood by what they've said. If it stays like that, then that's OK." Hoeness, however, agreed that discussions with Tottenham boss Levy are tricky. "He's clever," Hoeness said. "He isn't naming a price. First of all, we have to bring him so far as to name a price. Of course, he's playing for time. He's savvy and, I find, a super professional, I really like him. But I think these are people who haven't just been doing this since yesterday." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Football: Former Bayern Munich president 'confident' of Harry Kane signing

CAF confirmed at a meeting of their top officials in Abidjan on Thursday that the African Football League would kick off in October, but there is confusion over the starting date. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, a guest speaker in the Ivory Coast commercial capital, said the eagerly awaited debut of the club competition would be on Friday, October 20. But the official CAF website said the eight-team first edition would kick off one day later, on Saturday, October 21.

The African Football League is the new name for what was launched last year in Tanzania as the CAF Africa Super League. CAF president Patrice Motsepe told South African public broadcaster SABC in June that the name change was necessary because some major sponsors had a problem with the original title.

"Some sponsors say the history of the Super League in Europe was not good and if you associate the name 'super' with a football competition, it has negative connotations," said Motsepe.

Speaking more recently to Qatar-based BeIN Sport, the CAF president said: "Our friends in Europe advised us not to use the expression 'super league'.

"(They based this advice on) negative associations with the recent failed attempt in European football."

A planned European Super League collapsed within 48 hours in 2021 after a backlash from fans, governments, and players, which forced nine of the 12 teams who signed up to pull out. The founding members were Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

<h2>Little known</h2>

Infantino has repeatedly stressed that the situation in Africa is different from Europe with the African League backed by FIFA and CAF. Three months before the competition begins, little is known about it beyond the name change, an October 20 or 21 kick-off and a field reduced from 24 clubs to eight that have not been named.

AFP understands the line-up will include 2023 CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly of Egypt, runners-up Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, and semi-finalists Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and Esperance of Tunisia. The other entrants could be recently crowned Nigerian champions Enyimba, 11-time CAF title winners TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Petro Luanda of Angola, and Simba of Tanzania.

"There will be eight great teams, which will be followed in the future with a bigger version. We have to invest in African club football as well as national team football," said Infantino. "It is our responsibility, duty, and task, and with the work and contributions of all of us as a team, we will succeed."

CAF have said that their main annual competitions before the African Football League launches -- the Champions League and Confederation Cup -- will continue. Delegates to the Abidjan meeting heard that CAF commercial revenue rose 17 percent to $125 million (€111 mn) in the past financial year thanks to media rights and sponsorship increases. The Cairo-based organization is hoping for a major revenue boost next year as their biggest money-spinner, the Africa Cup of Nations, will be staged in the Ivory Coast from January 13.

Defending champions Senegal are among 15 nations who have secured places and the other nine will be known in September when the final qualifiers are played.

Football transfers: Spurs chairman Daniel Levy negotiates potential Harry Kane deal with Bayern Munich

Panama stunned the United States on Wednesday by winning their CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-final 5-4 on penalties in San Diego to set up a final with Mexico. Mexico, record eight-times Gold Cup champions, reached Sunday's decider with a 3-0 win over Jamaica in Las Vegas. Mexico will start as favourites against a Panama team that have never won the regional competition for North and Central America and the Caribbean --- but have reached the final twice before, losing to the USA in 2005 and 2013.

The USA, who selected a squad without their main Europe-based players, miss out on a place in the final for only the second time since 2003. They bowed out on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after extra time. "Getting into this final is the dream of every Panamanian. We had to suffer to get this victory but that is how it is best savoured," said Panama coach Thomas Christiansen.

The USA started brightly in the late afternoon Californian sunshine, with Cade Cowell hitting the post in the first minute. Panama had an effort from Edgar Barcenas in the 29th ruled out for offside and American goalkeeper Matt Turner had to be alert in the 53rd minute to keep out a header from Ismael Diaz. Brandon Vazquez, given a start after three goals in the tournament as a substitute, then missed a good opportunity, firing high from close range after good work from Cowell.

There was drama in stoppage time when Diaz had the ball in the net but was flagged for offside. Panama claimed that Djordje Mihailovic had handled the ball but VAR found nothing and backed the offside call. The USA had needed extra time and penalties to get past Canada in their quarter-final, but they were short of creativity against a determined Panama.

Panama grabbed the lead in the ninth minute of the first period of extra time when Adalberto Carrasquilla lofted the ball over the top and Ivan Anderson went round the out-rushing Turner and slotted into the unguarded goal. But six minutes later the USA levelled through a Jesus Ferreira volley after Jordan Morris had headed down a long ball into the box.

<h2>Painful defeat&nbsp;</h2>

With both sides tiring in the heat, the game went to the shoot-out. There was an unsavoury moment when US defender Matt Miazga, after converting his kick, shouted in the face of Cecilio Waterman as he walked up to the spot. The Panama forward kept his cool and slotted home. That kick took the contest into sudden death and goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera was the hero, diving to save Cristian Roldan's effort. That left Carrasquilla needing to convert for victory and the midfielder made no mistake to set off the celebrations for the Central Americans.

USA interim coach B.J. Callaghan, who will now be replaced by the returning Gregg Berhalter, said despite the defeat his young team had gained valuable tournament experience. Mexico, record eight-times Gold Cup champions, reached Sunday's decider with a 3-0 win over Jamaica in Las Vegas. Mexico will start as favourites against a Panama team that have never won the regional competition for North and Central America and the Caribbean --- but have reached the final twice before, losing to the USA in 2005 and 2013. ¡Termina el partido! ⏰ ¡🇵🇦 @fepafut derrotó a @USMNT 🇺🇸 en la tanda de penales!#CopaOro pic.twitter.com/29J2QLiTMX — Gold Cup (@GoldCup) July 13, 2023 × The USA, who selected a squad without their main Europe-based players, miss out on a place in the final for only the second time since 2003. They bowed out on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after extra time. "Getting into this final is the dream of every Panamanian. We had to suffer to get this victory but that is how it is best savoured," said Panama coach Thomas Christiansen. The USA started brightly in the late afternoon Californian sunshine, with Cade Cowell hitting the post in the first minute. Panama had an effort from Edgar Barcenas in the 29th ruled out for offside and American goalkeeper Matt Turner had to be alert in the 53rd minute to keep out a header from Ismael Diaz. Brandon Vazquez, given a start after three goals in the tournament as a substitute, then missed a good opportunity, firing high from close range after good work from Cowell. There was drama in stoppage time when Diaz had the ball in the net but was flagged for offside. Panama claimed that Djordje Mihailovic had handled the ball but VAR found nothing and backed the offside call. The USA had needed extra time and penalties to get past Canada in their quarter-final, but they were short of creativity against a determined Panama. Panama grabbed the lead in the ninth minute of the first period of extra time when Adalberto Carrasquilla lofted the ball over the top and Ivan Anderson went round the out-rushing Turner and slotted into the unguarded goal. But six minutes later the USA levelled through a Jesus Ferreira volley after Jordan Morris had headed down a long ball into the box. Also Read: UEFA probes Maccabi's Champions League match in Malta after 'Palestine' chant Painful defeat With both sides tiring in the heat, the game went to the shoot-out. There was an unsavoury moment when US defender Matt Miazga, after converting his kick, shouted in the face of Cecilio Waterman as he walked up to the spot. The Panama forward kept his cool and slotted home. That kick took the contest into sudden death and goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera was the hero, diving to save Cristian Roldan's effort. That left Carrasquilla needing to convert for victory and the midfielder made no mistake to set off the celebrations for the Central Americans. USA interim coach B.J. Callaghan, who will now be replaced by the returning Gregg Berhalter, said despite the defeat his young team had gained valuable tournament experience. "What I said to the guys was I'm super proud of them. I'm super proud that they stuck together, they continued to respond to adversity," he said. Dele Alli, the footballer who was once considered one of England's most promising talents, revealed on Thursday, July 13, that he had recently finished his spell in rehab for curing a sleeping pill addiction. Alli sat down with Manchester United legend and former England right-back Gary Neville to have a conversation on 'The Overlap'&nbsp;podcast and talked in detail about his troubled childhood, explaining that the unresolved trauma of suffering sexual abuse as a child led to his later addiction.&nbsp;

Alli, 27, was one of former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino's trusted men in midfield and helped the team reach the 2019 Champions League final. He was also part of the England squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 where he scored twice for the national side including a goal in the last eight against Sweden. He decided to speak on his struggles so as to start a dialogue and help others who might have suffered abuse. The rehab spell has done him a lot of good as it helped to fuel his love and passion for the beautiful game, with the objective of getting his football career back on track.

"Going into rehab is definitely scary but I could never have imagined how much I would get from it and how much it would help me mentally. I was in a bad place. A lot happened when I was younger that I could never understand," added an emotional Alli.&nbsp;

The player emphasised the fact that the dangers of sleeping pill addiction are widespread, as many footballers are using prescribed tablets before and after matches.

"To take a sleeping tablet and be ready for the next day is fine, but when you're broken as I am, it can obviously have the reverse effect because it does work for the problems you want to deal with," he said.

He struggled in Turkey, scoring twice in 13 games before returning to Everton in April 2023 with an injury that required surgery. His last appearance in a Besiktas shirt was against Antalyaspor on February 26. &nbsp;

In October 2021,&nbsp;Al-Nassr&nbsp;were ordered by a FIFA-appointed judge to pay Leicester City 460,000 euros ($514,000) plus interest in a dispute over the transfer of Nigeria international Ahmed Musa. Lionel Messi's hopes of enjoying a quieter life in Florida for the final years of his career may prove to be wishful thinking with the Argentine star already lined up for a whole series of publicity events. Messi will take part in a glitzy presentation at the club's stadium on Sunday which has been branded "The Unveil" with the club promising musical entertainment for the expected capacity 18,000 crowd. The event will be broadcast on Apple TV and parts of it are sure to be syndicated to other television networks.

Then the following day, Inter Miami have announced a "major press conference" with Messi expected to attend along with the club's owners, probably including co-owner David Beckham. Tuesday is earmarked to be Messi's first full training session with his new teammates but if he thought that would simply be a case of shaking hands and getting back on the field, he may be in for a surprise.

While the World Cup winner is used to practising behind closed doors, this session will be open -- for part of the session -- to the media with television cameras trained on the 36-year-old's every move. When announcing his intention to join Miami last month, Messi gave several reasons why he had turned down other options but stated the hope for a calmer life was one of them. "I'm also at a point where I want to get out of the spotlight a bit, to think more about my family," he said.

On top of all those club commitments, the shy, introverted Messi is certain to be encouraged to give time for MLS's broadcast partner, Apple TV, who are hoping that the Argentine will help boost subscriptions to their 'MLS Season Pass' product.

Messi arrived in Miami on Tuesday, flying in on a private jet with his family and sources said that he had visited the team's training facility early on Wednesday. Inter Miami's media sessions have tended to attract around a dozen reporters but there were at least five-times that amount on Wednesday.

<h2>'Big change' for all</h2>

Beckham also turned out for the training session, kicking a ball around while wearing a T-shirt, sunglasses and sneakers. With many South American media outlets having Miami-based correspondents, Miami players are already facing a very different level of interest. "It's a big change, I don't know what to say, but I know it's a big change not only for the club, but also for the city. It's very important for everyone and we have to enjoy it," said Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez.

Goalkeeper Drake Callender said the team would have to learn to cope with the newfound attention. "We are all professionals...we are all focused on the weekend (game) but with all of this, it's something that is a reality for us and the best thing we can do is just focus on our training. "We have a lot of younger kids or players in the group and for them, with media around, security around, it may be a little different," he said.

Messi's new team are currently bottom of the Eastern Conference with just five wins from 21 games and are ranked 28th of the 29 team across MLS. Callender says they need to change that quickly. "I believe that (we are) better than the league position (but) the reality is that we are in last place. So that is something we have to take control of and change," he said.

With Messi expected to be joined by Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets and other new faces and experienced Argentine coach Gerardo Martino now in charge, Callender believes that improvement is sure to come. "Given the quality of our players and the way we want to play, I think this team has a lot of potential to go far this year," he said.

MLS: Lionel Messi to have jam-packed week ahead of him after touchdown in Miami

Argentine star Lionel Messi landed in Florida on Tuesday ahead of putting the final touches on his move to US Major League Soccer club Inter Miami. Argentine television footage showed Messi, with members of his family, walking off a private jet at a small, executive airport adjacent to Inter Miami's stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The World Cup winner is expected to put pen to paper on a two and a half year deal, reported to be worth $60 million a year, before being presented to fans at a stadium event on Sunday.

"We are happy with the decision we made. Prepared and eager to face the new challenge, the new change," Messi said in an interview with Argentine TV show, Llave a la eternidad, released on Tuesday. "My mentality and my head are not going to change and I am going to try, wherever I have to be, to give my best for myself and my new club and continue to perform at the highest level," he added.

Messi is the biggest name to ever move to MLS and the greatest player to head to the United States since Brazilian great Pele signed for the New York Cosmos in 1975. MLS hope that Messi will massively increase the profile of the league and boost subscriptions to their streaming broadcast deal with Apple TV. Ticket prices for games likely to involve Messi have already sky-rocketed.

Fans had begun to gather at the club's DRV PNK stadium early in the morning ahead of his expected arrival. One of the supporters, Julio Iglesias, 42 said he founded the 'Messias 305' fan group when he learned the Argentine star was coming to Miami. He didn't previously watch MLS games but said he now won't miss any Miami matches. "For us, Messi coming means everything, wherever he goes there is always incredible happiness," he said, while standing by a banner declaring 'We are waiting for you Messias".

Messi's arrival will also add to the momentum around the sport ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States along with Canada and Mexico.&nbsp;Messi is expected to make his debut for his new club in the July 21 Leagues Cup match against Mexican club Cruz Azul.

He is expected to be joined at the club by former Barcelona team-mate Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, while ex-Argentina and Barcelona coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino recently took over as coach. Miami owner Jorge Mas has suggested Messi and Busquets could be part of "three to five" new signings for the South Florida club in the current transfer window. Another former Barca player, Spanish full-back Jordi Alba, has also been strongly linked with a move to the team, which is co-owned by former England and Manchester United star David Beckham.

Miami are currently bottom of MLS's Eastern Conference with just five wins from 21 games and are ranked 28th out of the 29 teams in the league. But the club are in the semi-finals of the US Open Cup, where they have been drawn against league-leaders FC Cincinnati.

The seven-times Ballon d'Or winner has spent the last two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, after moving from Barcelona in 2021, where he spent the majority of his career. During his time with Barca, Messi won ten Spanish league titles, seven Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) titles and four Champions League winners medals. He scored twice for Argentina in the World Cup final which they won on penalties in Doha in December, after the game ended 3-3 after extra-time and raised the trophy as captain. Messi also won an Olympic gold medal with Argentina in 2008 and the Copa America in 2001.

"The release clause is fixed at 500 million euros ($551 million)," said Barcelona in a statement. Spanish reports suggest the Catalans will pay 30 million euros for the Brazil striker with another 31 million euros in potential add-ons. Barcelona have brought in Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez on free transfers this summer, with the Catalan giants still suffering from financial difficulties.

They are currently able to spend only 50 per cent of any savings or new income because of La Liga financial restrictions on clubs exceeding their spending limit, as determined by the Spanish league.

Roque, one of the hottest prospects in Brazilian football, has scored six goals in his last six games. The forward made his debut for the Brazilian national team in March and is able to play in wider areas as well as through the middle. Roque finished as the top goalscorer at the South American Under-20 championship earlier this year with six goals as Brazil triumphed.

Barcelona are still looking for a holding midfielder to replace captain Sergio Busquets, who left the club at the end of last season to join Inter Miami.

Ange Postecoglou, the newly-appointed manager of the English Premier League (EPL) club Tottenham Hotspur, hasn't been given 'any assurances' about Harry Kane. The England captain, who is entering his last year of the contract, is on the radar of many foreign clubs. Bayern Munich of German Bundesliga have shown the strongest interest in Kane as per the reports.

Postecoglou, however, wants Kane in his team and hopes that the English skipper wants the same as well.

"I don't think it's my role to sit there and treat people in a manner because of their circumstances. I treat everyone the same.

"Harry is already an important figure in the history of this football club. He's one of the premier players in the world. I want him here and I want to make this club successful. I'm certain he wants that as well," said the Hotspur coach on Monday, July 10 in his first conference since being named the manager.

Postecoglou, however, is keen to speak with Kane when the Spur star reports for preseason training on Wednesday, July 12.

"It's not going to be a conversation where we come out with some kind of understanding," Postecoglou said.

"I just want to introduce myself and I want to know what he wants to happen to make this football club successful then we'll go out there on the training ground and make it happen.

"I haven't had any assurances and I wouldn't expect any. With these type of situations you're never dealing with certainties. I can only go with what I know right now. Harry is part of the squad and looking forward to being back and part of the players."

Amid talk that Kane might be leaving Tottenham, ESPN reported that Kane has been told that he's not available for transfer this summer and the club doesn't plans to offload him either.

League matches in the Netherlands will be stopped next season if fans repeatedly engage in homophobic chants, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said on Monday. From the start of the 2023/24 domestic campaign, stadium announcers will warn offending fans on two occasions to refrain from the offensive chants, after which the match will be temporarily halted if they continue.

Individuals found guilty of offensive behaviour face an 18-month stadium ban. The decision was made at a meeting of all the professional clubs, where delegates were unanimous in voting for the measures.

"Football is for everyone. Together we have drawn a line. We will evaluate the steps we are taking now (at the end of the 2023/24 season) to see if they produce the desired result," said Marianne van Leeuwen, KNVB director of professional football. In April, fans of amateur side SV Spakenburg aimed homophobic chants at PSV Eindhoven’s Xavi Simons in a Dutch Cup game, while a section of fans chanted "all Germans are gay" during an international clash between the Netherlands and Germany in Amsterdam last year.

United States women's team star Megan Rapinoe announced on social media on Saturday that she would be retiring from football at the end of this season.

"It is with a deep sense of peace &amp; gratitude that I have decided this will be my final season playing this beautiful game," the 38-year-old posted.

"I never could have imagined the ways in which soccer would shape and change my life forever," she added.

The two-time World Cup winner, well known for her activism, is part of the USA squad for the upcoming women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Rapinoe plays in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) for Seattle based OL Reign -- their season concludes in November.

The winger currently has 199 caps over a span of 17 years playing for her country and also won an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012.

She was awarded the Best FIFA Women's Player in 2019 but her fame came as much for her espousal of causes and her campaigning as for her skills on the field.

Rapinoe publicly came out as gay in July 2012 and has been a high-profile campaigner on social issues including LGBTQ+ rights, racial inequality and gender and pay equality.

She was a leading voice in the US women's team's successful fight for equal pay and conditions which resulted in a lawsuit and eventual new collective agreement being struck in 2021.

Rapinoe made headlines in 2016 when she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

"I've been able to have such an incredible career, and this game has brought me all over the world and allowed me to meet so many amazing people," said Rapinoe.

"I feel incredibly grateful to have played as long as I have, to be as successful as we've been, and to have been a part of a generation of players who undoubtedly left the game better than they found it."

"To be able to play one last World Cup and one last NWSL season and go out on my own terms is incredibly special," she added.

Last July she received the highest civilian honor in the United States when President Joe Biden awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Rapinoe was the first footballer to receive the award and one of just six female athletes or coaches.

"Beyond the World Cup title to Olympic medals, Megan is a champion for essential American truth that everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect," Biden said at the award ceremony.

"She helped lead the change for perhaps the most important victory for anyone on our soccer team or any soccer team: equal pay for women."

Rapinoe's views made her a polarizing figure in the deeply divided country, however, as former USA men's international now television pundit Alexis Lalas highlighted.

"Megan Rapinoe has transcended the game of soccer and she's fearless and opinionated and interesting and she is a legend and she's a badass both on and off the field," Lalas said on Fox Sports.

"Now I fundamentally disagree with a lot of her opinions and stances off the field but I'll fight to my last breath for her to have that freedom to express that which she has done incredibly well.&nbsp;

"I've got a lot of respect for her even though at times I disagree with her," he added.

But Lalas questioned the timing of Rapinoe's announcement in the build-up to the World Cup, where the USA are seeking a record-extending fifth title.&nbsp;

"I do think it's a little weird to announce it before the World Cup and put that kind of attention on her," he said.

US women's team coach Vlatko Andonovski said Rapinoe remained an important part of the team for the World Cup which starts on July 20.

"Megan Rapinoe is one of the most important players in women's soccer history and a personality like no other," he said.

"It's been a wonderful experience to coach her in the NWSL and for the national team and I'm looking forward to her being an important part of our team at the World Cup," he added.

The Californian has spent most of her career playing in domestic leagues but had a brief spell in Australia with W-League team Sydney FC in 2011 and two years later played for French club Lyon, reaching the final of the Champions League.

At the 2019 World Cup in France, she scored in the 2-0 win over the Netherlands in the final and was named Player of the Match. She won the Golden Boot as top scorer and Golden Ball for best player in the tournament.

"I feel incredibly grateful to have played as long as I have, to be as successful as we've been, and to have been a part of a generation of players who undoubtedly left the game better than they found it." "To be able to play one last World Cup and one last NWSL season and go out on my own terms is incredibly special," she added. "She helped lead the change for perhaps the most important victory for anyone on our soccer team or any soccer team: equal pay for women." Rapinoe's views made her a polarizing figure in the deeply divided country, however, as former USA men's international now television pundit Alexis Lalas highlighted. "Megan Rapinoe has transcended the game of soccer and she's fearless and opinionated and interesting and she is a legend and she's a badass both on and off the field," Lalas said on Fox Sports. "Now I fundamentally disagree with a lot of her opinions and stances off the field but I'll fight to my last breath for her to have that freedom to express that which she has done incredibly well. "I've got a lot of respect for her even though at times I disagree with her," he added. But Lalas questioned the timing of Rapinoe's announcement in the build-up to the World Cup, where the USA are seeking a record-extending fifth title. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. <h2>Van der Sar’s legendary career</h2>

Starting his career at Ajax, the Dutchman was part of the legendary Ajax squad that won the 1995 Champions League title under coach Louis van Gaal. He was part of the group that consisted of Patrick Kluivert, Clarence Seedorf, and several others. He would then reach another Champions League final in 1996 before losing to his eventual future club Juventus.

In 1999 he made his switch to Turin and was part of the team that had domestic success while playing for Juventus. However, the summer of 2001 saw a football upside-down after Real Madrid splashed the cash in the transfer market. Real paid Juventus a world-record fee to get the services of Zinedine Zidane which saw the Old Lady acquire several players including Pavel Nedvěd and Gianluigi Buffon.

The latter’s arrival for a record deal for a goalkeeper saw Van der Sar force an exit to Fulham where he continued until 2005. With Manchester United struggling to get a perfect fit for a good goalkeeper, then legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson signed the Dutch shot-stopper despite being 34 and would help the club win Premier League on three consecutive occasions while helping the team win the Champions League shootout against Chelsea in 2008.

The retailer added none of its current or former directors or senior management were involved in the offence, which took place in 2018-2021, and it had co-operated fully with the probe.
