<p>A new study has found that obesity is likely to damage the ability of the brain to recognise the sensation of fullness of the stomach and to detect satisfaction after consuming sugars and fats.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study emphasised the changes in the brain may last forever even after a significant amount of weight is lost by people who are considered medically obese, which further explained why a lot of people regain their weight after losing it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“There was no sign of reversibility — the brains of people with obesity continued to lack the chemical responses that tell the body, ‘OK, you ate enough,’” stated Dr Caroline Apovian, who works as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also the co-director of the Centre for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.</p>

<p>“This study captures why obesity is a disease — there are actual changes to the brain,” stated Apovian, who was not part of the group that carried out the study.</p>

<p>“The study is very rigorous and quite comprehensive,” stated Dr I Sadaf Farooqi, who is a professor of metabolism and medicine at the University of Cambridge in the UK and was not involved in the new research.</p>

<h2><strong>Clinical trial</strong></h2>

<p>On Monday, Nature Metabolism published the study which was done based on a controlled clinical trial involving 30 people who are considered medically obese and 30 people who have normal weight. The group of people were fed sugar carbohydrates (glucose), fats (lipids) or water (as a control). On separate days, each group of nutrients were fed to people directly into the stomach through a feeding tube.</p>

<p>“We wanted to bypass the mouth and focus on the gut-brain connection, to see how nutrients affect the brain independently from seeing, smelling or tasting food,” stated lead study author Dr &nbsp;Mireille Serlie, professor of endocrinology at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.</p>

<p>One night before the testing, the participants were given the same meal for dinner at home and they did not consume anything till the feeding tube was in place the next morning. &nbsp;When either fats or sugars entered the stomach through the tube, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were used by researchers to capture the response of the brains for over 30 minutes.</p>

<p>In people who had normal weight, the study found evidence of brain understanding that the body had been fed when either sugars or fats were put into the stomach. Also, the levels of dopamine rose in people with normal weight which signalled that the brain's reward centres were activated. However, in medically obese people, no evidence was found of brain understanding that food has been given to the body and there was no rise in dopamine levels.</p>

<p>A Chinese woman has been sued by a restaurant for $6,500 (Rs 5.3 lakh) as compensation for stashing her leftover food in her handbag and for wasting food by overordering, as per a report by the South China Morning Post.&nbsp;The woman visited the restaurant five times over the course of two weeks in August 2022 in the Guizhou region of southwest China, according to the restaurant manager who reviewed CCTV footage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She covertly put leftovers into plastic bags, which she cunningly stashed in her handbag, after ordering more food than she could reasonably consume. The management asserts that this was not an isolated incidence because the woman had been frequenting the eatery regularly since March 2021.</p>

<p>Even though the cost per person was 218 yuan (about Rs 2,500), SCMP claims that Wen often bought more than 10,000 yuan (roughly Rs 1.1 lakh) worth of food, which was 10 times more than what most customers would typically consume at the buffet.&nbsp;As per reports, the restaurant has a policy in place that prohibits customers cannot take leftover food outside the premises.</p>

<p>Chen, the restaurant owner, claims that the woman also exclusively ordered pricey meals including salmon, goose liver, and sweet prawns.</p>

<p>On&nbsp;one bill, the woman paid for 140 servings of meat and dessert, as well as 45 servings of three sweet shrimps for 48 yuan (about Rs. 567) apiece and 20 servings of three salmon sashimi for 38 yuan (roughly Rs. 449 each).</p>

The woman said that she placed an order for more food than she could eat and took the extra food home since "it would be a waste otherwise."</p>

<p>However, the restaurant owner sued her and demanded compensation of about 45,000 yuan (Rs 5.31 lakh) for the five instances in which she overindulged.</p>

<p>Taking to Twitter,&nbsp;the Mondaiji cafe in Sapporo, Hokkaido, said that one of its waitresses had been fired after serving customers&nbsp;alcoholic drinks laced&nbsp;with her blood. The drinks, known as orikaku, or the original cocktail, mostly&nbsp;contain&nbsp;fruits or other colourful syrups.</p>

<p>“Such an act is no different from part-time job terrorism and is absolutely not acceptable,” the cafe’s tweet on April 2 read.</p>

<p>The owner stated that the cafe, which is situated in Sapporo's Susukino entertainment district, was closed for a day in order to replace all of the drinking glasses. The sacked server's name was withheld by the cafe.</p>

<p>The name of the restaurant translates roughly to "Problem Child Concept Cafe." The cafe also promotes itself on Twitter as a place for "problem children" and dark girls who are also "the cutest" to serve their customers.</p>

<p>An all-you-can-drink menu, available for US$19, is one of the cafe's specialties.</p>

<p>An apology for the incident from the cafe owner was posted on Twitter.</p>

These are some of the questions scientists have been working upon for decades. And there has now been a breakthrough finally.</p>

<p>Scientists have created the first molecular-level, 3D picture of how an odour molecule activates a human odorant receptor, a crucial step towards deciphering the sense of smell.</p>

<p>This will help a longstanding impasse in our understanding of olfaction (sense of smell). The 3D picture of the odour molecule has implications for fragrances, food science and beyond.</p>

<p>The 3D model has been created by scientists at University of California San Francisco (UCSF). This is sure to reignite interest in the sense of smell.</p>

<p>The findings have been published in the journal Nature, reported Press Trust of India.</p>

<p>Odorant receptors, proteins that bind odour molecules on the surface of olfactory cells, make up half of the largest, most diverse family of receptors in our bodies. A deeper understanding of them paves the way for new insights about a range of biological processes.</p>

<p>Smell involves about 400 unique receptors.</p>

<p>Each of the hundreds of thousands of scents we can detect is made of a mixture of different odour molecules. Each type of molecule may be detected by an array of receptors, creating a puzzle for the brain to solve each time the nose catches a whiff of something new.</p>

<p>"It's like hitting keys on a piano to produce a chord," said Hiroaki Matsunami, professor at Duke University and a close collaborator of Aashish Manglik, associate professor, UCSF.</p>

<p>Matsunami's work over the past two decades has focused on decoding the sense of smell.</p>

<p>"Seeing how an odorant receptor binds an odorant explains how this works at a fundamental level," said Matsunami.</p>

<p>We haven't been able to map olfaction, because without a picture, said Manglik, we didn't know how odour molecules would react with their corresponding odour receptors.</p>

<p>To create the 3D picture, the study said, Manglik's lab used a type of imaging called cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), that allows researchers to see atomic structure and study the molecular shapes of proteins.</p>

<p>But before Manglik's team could visualise the odorant receptor binding an odorant, they first needed to purify a sufficient quantity of the receptor protein.</p>

<p>Odorant receptors are notoriously challenging, some say impossible, to make in the lab for such purposes.</p>

<p>The Manglik and Matsunami teams looked for an odorant receptor that was abundant in both the body and the nose, thinking it might be easier to make artificially, and one that also could detect water-soluble odorants, according to the study.</p>

<p>They settled on a receptor called OR51E2, which is known to respond to propionate, a molecule that contributes to the pungent smell of Swiss cheese.</p>

A new research conducted on rats found that after short periods of being fed a high-fat or high-calorie diet, the brain reduces the amount of food eaten to balance calorie intake.&nbsp;The development of medicines for the condition may be aided by a better understanding of the brain’s function and the intricate mechanisms that underlie overeating, a behaviour that can result in weight gain and obesity. Because obesity is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular illnesses and type 2 diabetes, it is a global public health concern.<br />

Around half of the adults in England are obese, and 63 per cent of those are regarded to be over a healthy weight. When they leave elementary school, one in three kids is obese.</p>

<p>Dr Kirsteen Browning, Penn State College of Medicine, US, said, “Calorie intake seems to be regulated in the short-term by astrocytes. We found that a brief exposure (three to five days) to a high fat/calorie diet has the greatest effect on astrocytes, triggering the normal signalling pathway to control the stomach. Over time, astrocytes seem to desensitise to high-fat food. Around 10-14 days of eating a high fat/calorie diet, astrocytes seem to fail to react and the brain’s ability to regulate calorie intake seems to be lost. This disrupts the signalling to the stomach and delays how it empties.”</p>

<p>Astrocytes initially react when high-fat/calorie food is ingested. Their activation triggers the release of gliotransmitters, chemicals (including glutamate and ATP) that excite nerve cells and enable normal signalling pathways to stimulate neurons that control how the stomach works. This ensures the stomach contracts correctly to fill and empty in response to food passing through the digestive system. When astrocytes are inhibited, the cascade is disrupted. The decrease in signalling chemicals leads to a delay in digestion because the stomach doesn’t fill and empty appropriately.</p>

<p>The vigorous investigation used behavioural observation to monitor food intake in rats (N=205, 133 males, 72 females) which were fed a control or high fat/calorie diet for one, three, five or 14 days. This was combined with pharmacological and specialist genetic approaches (both in vivo and in vitro) to target distinct neural circuits. Enabling the researchers to specifically inhibit astrocytes in a particular region of the brainstem (the posterior part of the brain that connects the brain to the spinal cord), so they could assess how individual neurons behaved to studying rats’ behaviour when awake.</p>

<p>Human studies will need to be carried out to confirm if the same mechanism occurs in humans. If this is the case, further testing will be required to assess if the mechanism could be safely targeted without disrupting other neural pathways.</p>

<p>The researchers have plans to further explore the mechanism. Dr Kirsteen Browning said,</p>

<p>“We have yet to find out whether the loss of astrocyte activity and the signalling mechanism is the cause of overeating or that it occurs in response to the overeating. We are eager to find out whether it is possible to reactivate the brain’s apparent lost ability to regulate calorie intake. If this is the case, it could lead to interventions to help restore calorie regulation in humans.”</p>

If you’re sensitive to lactose, stick to hard or aged cheese such as cheddar, provolone, Parmesan, blue, Camembert and Gouda, and minimize fresh soft cheese like ricotta and cottage cheese.</p>
