Argentina are fined 120,000 Swiss francs ($149,000) by FIFA for a single charge of discrimination. They were sanctioned for the ill-fated incident on June 10 when the defending world champions faced Colombia.

Indian football is once again staring at uncertainty after FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) issued a stern notice to the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The global and continental bodies have set October 30, 2025, as the deadline for the federation to adopt a new constitution in line with international statutes and India’s updated sports governance framework. Failure to comply could lead to another suspension, a situation that would derail both the men’s and women’s national teams as well as domestic leagues.<h2>A familiar trouble</h2>This is not the first time Indian football has found itself in a governance crisis. In 2022, the AIFF was briefly suspended for what FIFA termed “third-party interference” after the Supreme Court of India appointed a Committee of Administrators to run the federation. Although that ban was lifted within days, the episode served as a reminder of how fragile football administration in the country has been. The current standoff stems from the pending approval of a revised constitution. The draft, prepared after years of deliberation and legal wrangling, needs both Supreme Court clearance and ratification by AIFF’s general body. Unless that happens before the deadline, India risks isolation from international football once again.<h2>What a ban would mean</h2>The consequences of suspension go beyond symbolism. The national teams would be barred from FIFA and AFC tournaments, clubs would lose their international slots, and development funding from Zurich would be halted. Perhaps most damaging, the already shaky Indian Super League (ISL) calendar would collapse further—players and coaches are already facing uncertainty after the league’s commercial partner froze the upcoming season due to disputes over media and commercial rights.&nbsp; While Indian football has made modest progress on the field—with rising attendances in some states, improved youth scouting, and increased foreign interest—the governance paralysis has repeatedly overshadowed the sport. Critics argue that prolonged litigation, political interference, and administrative infighting have left the game without clear leadership. FIFA and AFC, in their letter, underlined three key demands: a constitution that respects global football principles, a Supreme Court order endorsing it, and its adoption by the AIFF General Assembly. Any deviation, they warned, would invite sanctions.<h2>A race against time</h2>The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on August 28, a session that could determine whether the federation can resolve the impasse before the October deadline. For now, players, fans, and stakeholders remain anxious. Every delay deepens the risk of Indian football being pushed to the margins just as it struggles to grow.&nbsp; The crisis reveals a paradox: while Indian football dreams of breaking into Asia’s elite, its foundation is repeatedly shaken by boardroom battles. Without governance reform, financial stability, and institutional transparency, the sport will continue to swing between hope and crisis. The next two months will decide whether Indian football finally finds stability or slips into another cycle of suspension and recovery.

Former France midfielder Lassana Diarra is seeking €65 million ($76 million) in damages from FIFA and the Belgian Football Association, his lawyer announced on Monday, in a long-running legal dispute over football’s transfer rules. The 39-year-old’s case against FIFA led to a landmark ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) last October, which found parts of the governing body’s transfer regulations to be in breach of EU law. Despite that decision, Diarra says no settlement has been reached.&nbsp; His lawyer, Martin Hissel, said the claim represents “compensation for damage caused by FIFA rules” on transfers. “Following a ruling by the CJEU, in the absence of an amicable solution, it is natural to return to the national courts so that they can implement the CJEU ruling,” Hissel said. He added that Belgian courts are expected to issue their decision within 12 to 15 months.&nbsp; The CJEU determined that FIFA’s regulations restrict the free movement of players by creating “considerable legal risks, unforeseeable and potentially very high financial risks as well as major sporting risks” for footballers and clubs, thereby distorting the transfer market.&nbsp; The case dates back to Diarra’s 2014 exit from Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow. The midfielder’s contract was terminated on grounds of alleged breaches, with the club demanding €20 million in compensation. Diarra disputed the claim and sought damages himself, but FIFA eventually ordered him to pay Lokomotiv €10 million, a ruling later upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He was also handed a backdated 15-month suspension.&nbsp; As a result, Belgian club Charleroi pulled out of signing Diarra, fearing liability for the penalties under FIFA’s rules—a decision that became central to his legal challenge.&nbsp;Following the CJEU’s ruling, FIFA introduced an “interim regulatory framework” for transfers last December. But Diarra said he was disappointed that no settlement talks had been initiated. “I waited a few months before restarting the national proceedings in Belgium, thinking that, particularly following the efforts of FIFPRO Europe, FIFA and the Belgian football association would at least have the decency to contact me to propose an amicable settlement,” Diarra said in a statement.&nbsp;“This was not the case. It is their right, but it reflects a persistent culture of contempt for the rule of law and for players, despite the very clear message sent by the CJEU. To my great regret, we will therefore once again have to go before the judges, as I have no other choice.” Capped 34 times by France, Diarra enjoyed spells at Chelsea, Arsenal, Portsmouth, and Real Madrid before retiring at Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.

Cole Palmer scored two goals and made another as Chelsea stunned Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the Club World Cup on Sunday, beating the European champions 3-0 before lifting the trophy alongside US President Donald Trump. PSG were the favourites after coming to the United States fresh from winning the Champions League and having destroyed Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals. But having been three goals ahead early on in the semis, this time the roles were reversed as PSG found themselves 3-0 down by the break. Palmer opened the scoring midway through the first half and struck again to make it two on the half-hour mark, before taking advantage of passive defending to set up Joao Pedro for the third on 43 minutes. A bad day for PSG was summed up when Joao Neves was shown red following a VAR review four minutes from the end for pulling Marc Cucurella by the hair off the ball. "Being Club World Cup champion is something for us to be proud of. We are very happy, especially against a team in PSG who I consider the best in the world with one of the best managers in the world," said Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, before hailing match-winner Palmer. "These are the games where we expect Cole to appear because it is a big game, a big moment, and once again he showed how good he is." Before Chelsea got to lift the trophy, tensions spilled over at full-time with players facing off on the pitch and Paris coach Luis Enrique raising his arm to the neck of Joao Pedro. "There was a lot of pushing and shoving. It was a situation that obviously should have been avoided, but my intention was clearly just to try to separate the players," said Luis Enrique. The scoreline was one few could have predicted as Chelsea capped what has been a long but memorable season -- they are the first ever winners of the 32-team Club World Cup having also won the UEFA Conference League and finished fourth in the Premier League. They will also take away around $125 million in prize money, meaning the prospect of a drastically curtailed summer break before returning for next season will surely feel worth it. For PSG, meanwhile, the financial rewards are similar but there will be genuine disappointment at falling short of adding this title to their Champions League triumph and French league and cup double. Nevertheless, conquering Europe was always the main aim this season for Luis Enrique's team, who now have exactly a month to digest this and take a holiday before returning to action in the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. Trump in attendance There was a real sense of occasion at the MetLife Stadium, with the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline and with Trump in attendance along with First Lady Melania Trump in a crowd of 81,118. For the second time in six weeks PSG found themselves involved in a final that quickly turned into a one-sided affair. The club claimed a historic 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final, but here they were ripped apart by Chelsea. The opening goal came in the 22nd minute as Malo Gusto got the better of Nuno Mendes down the right before seeing his shot blocked by Lucas Beraldo. The ball came back to Gusto and he teed up Palmer to finish into the bottom-left corner. Palmer has been the face of Chelsea on billboards in the United States during the tournament and he lived up to his star status by scoring again on the half-hour. Released on the right with PSG left-back Mendes out of position, Palmer advanced towards the box before stroking a low shot into the same corner. Joao Pedro played a part in the build-up to that goal and the Brazilian, signed during the tournament from Brighton, then got his name on the scoresheet to make it 3-0. Scorer of both goals against Fluminense in the semi-finals, he clipped a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma after being supplied by Palmer. PSG had conceded a single goal in their previous eight matches and they never really looked like producing a comeback, even if Neves headed just wide in first-half stoppage time. Substitute Liam Delap almost got a fourth for Chelsea midway through the second half, before Neves was shown red to complete a bad day for PSG. In a landmark collaboration, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/international-hockey-federation">International Hockey Federation</a> (FIH) and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/fifa">FIFA</a> Innovation team have released a new guide aimed at supporting the development of dual sport synthetic turf pitches suitable for both hockey and grassroots football.
Synthetic turf has long been the surface of choice for hockey and is increasingly valued in football for its durability and all-weather playability. For many communities, especially at grassroots and school levels, multi-sport fields are a practical and essential solution.
At the elite level, both FIH and FIFA have established specific turf standards tailored to their respective sports. However, the growing need for multi-use fields has led to joint efforts exploring whether modern, environmentally-conscious turf systems can meet the demands of both sports.

The result is the newly published &ldquo;Dualsport Pitches for Football and Hockey &ndash; Performance and Construction Guidelines&rdquo;. This comprehensive document merges FIFA&rsquo;s Basic field certification criteria with the updated FIH multi-sport category, offering guidance on turf performance, durability, and construction for dual-use pitches. It also outlines field layouts, dimensions, and certification processes.
FIH President Tayyab Ikram expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. He said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s fantastic to see FIH and FIFA Innovation working together to support grassroots football and hockey. This guide will be an invaluable resource for millions of young players globally. I&rsquo;m deeply grateful to FIFA and President Gianni Infantino for this partnership.&rdquo;
<h2>Hockey India boosts player welfare</h2>
In a strong show of commitment to player welfare, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/hockey-india">Hockey India</a> has deployed additional support staff&mdash;including a physiotherapist and a masseuse&mdash;at the ongoing 15th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The decision, planned last year, aims to provide timely medical attention and recovery support for athletes, especially with 31 national team players participating.
Prominent Indian players such as Hardik Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Krishan B Pathak, and Gurjant Singh are in action at the tournament. Given the high physical demands of the competition, this move ensures national players continue to receive the professional-level care they&rsquo;re accustomed to.
Chief Coach Craig Fulton welcomed the initiative, highlighting its role in preventing injuries and maintaining peak performance, especially ahead of the FIH Pro League. Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General Shri Bhola Nath Singh echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of consistent player care.

FIFA has cleared the way for Afghanistan’s women’s football team to represent their country, offering long-awaited support. However, the ICC remains silent on recognizing Afghan women cricketers, who fled after the Taliban banned them from playing. The fight for recognition and equality in Afghan sports continues.

Afghanistan: FIFA supports Afghan women’s team, but ICC remains silent

FIFA has cleared the way for Afghanistan women's national soccer team to be recognised and represent the Taliban-ruled country in global tournaments. The move, which comes four years after Taliban took over the Asian country for the second time in history, is too late as per the players.
Despite FIFA's pledge to Sport &amp; Rights Alliance (SRA) - a group which has been putting the cause for the Afghan women's team to be recognised, the players won't be able to participate in Asian Cup qualifiers. The regional tournament begins in two days time and the outcome will determine the eligibility to play in 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

FIFA, meanwhile, has shown positive attitude towards the cause for the first time and has promised to organise training camps, provide coaches, technical staff and medical team as well as overseeing of friendly matches for the team.
Players, while happy, lament that their previous four years were wasted due to FIFA's inaction.
&ldquo; The Taliban took that platform from us. Not only us: it&rsquo;s worth mentioning that it&rsquo;s the fourth educational year that women are not allowed to go to school. How can we expect the Taliban to negotiate about sports if they&rsquo;re not even allowing education for women?" national team player Mursal Sadat said as reported by UK-based news outlet the Guardian.
&ldquo;Unfortunately, FIFA&rsquo;s inaction took our platform away from us for four years. We sacrificed four years, youthful years, four years that we could have represented, four years that we could have advocated, four years in which we could have pushed the world towards bigger change for women of Afghanistan. We watched the 2023 Women&rsquo;s World Cup from the sidelines. Yet, in two days we have another draw for the Asian Cup qualifiers and we&rsquo;re still not allowed to play,&rdquo; she added.
Nevertheless, one can hope now that Afghan women soccer team will get the opportunity to perform at international level and hopefully win.

FIFA, the world governing body of football, has lifted the suspension on the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-football-federation">Pakistan Football Federation</a> (PFF) after necessary constitutional changes were made to ensure smooth governance of the sport in the country.

Since June 2019, Pakistan football has been governed by a FIFA-appointed normalisation committee, which was tasked with conducting elections and resolving disputes between parallel factions.
Despite multiple changes in the committee's leadership over the past five years, the core issues facing Pakistan football remained unresolved. A senior official from the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/asian-football-confederation">Asian Football Confederation</a> (AFC) visited Lahore last week to persuade Congress members to adopt the required constitutional amendments. The changes were approved at a meeting in Lahore, clearing the way for FIFA to lift the suspension.
With the suspension lifted, Pakistan will now be able to participate in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, with the national team scheduled to face Syria in their Group &lsquo;E' opener on March 25.
<h2>Not for the first time</h2>
This was not the first time Pakistan Football Federation has been suspended as they faced embarrassment in 2017 and 2021. The latest ban comes after PFF&rsquo;s failure to adopt a revision of its constitution, which would have ensured fair and democratic elections. The ban means Pakistan won&rsquo;t able to compete in any international tournament organised by FIFA until they are registered again by the football body.<o:p></o:p>

FIFA lifts ban on Pakistan Football Federation after necessary constitutional changes

Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Junior won the FIFA Best men's player of the year award at a ceremony in Doha on Tuesday, while Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati picked up the women's prize for the second time.

The award comes two months after 24-year-old Vinicius was second in the Ballon d'Or, with Real electing to snub the ceremony when they found out beforehand that Manchester City midfielder Rodri was set to win the trophy.

But the Brazilian was this time on hand to collect the prize in person as he is in Qatar with his club ahead of their Intercontinental Cup final clash with Mexico's Pachuca on Wednesday.

"Thank you very much. I don't know where to start. It was impossible to think of getting here. I grew up in a world of poverty, of organised crime. It's for all the children who grow up in that world. I thank everyone who voted for me," Vinicius said on stage.

"(Thank you) To my family, to the club, to my teammates, to Carletto (Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti), who always helps me.&nbsp;

"To everyone who helped make my dream come true. I hope to be at Madrid for many years, because it is the best club in the world. To Flamengo (his first club in Brazil). To my team-mates in my national team. And to my country, which always supports me in my work."

Vinicius succeeds Lionel Messi as the FIFA Best men's player after the Argentinian scooped up the last two editions of the award.

The live wire forward scored 24 goals and laid on 11 assists in 39 matches across all competitions as he led Real to a La Liga and Champions League double last season.

Having already wrapped up his third La Liga title in May, Vinicius secured the second Champions League trophy of his career as Real beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 on June 1.

Vinicius was on the scoresheet at Wembley with a pinpoint finish inside the final 10 minutes to make the game safe for his team.

If Vinicius at times played second fiddle to clubmate Jude Bellingham in La Liga, he was undoubtedly the main man for Madrid in Europe once the going got serious.

He was the top scorer for the Champions League winners with six goals in the competition, including the strike in the final and a brace in Madrid's 4-3 aggregate win over Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

He also scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory in the final of the Supercopa against arch-rivals Barcelona in January.

But it was not all plain sailing last season for Vinicius as he endured a disappointing Copa America with the Brazilian national team over the summer.

He scored two goals in a group-stage win against Paraguay, but his side ultimately crashed out on penalties to Uruguay in the quarter-finals.

The 26-year-old Spaniard Bonmati picked up the Best women's player award for the second year running, adding to the two Ballon d'Or trophies she already boasts.

"I'm grateful, I'm proud to receive this award," Bonmati said via video link from Barcelona's Olympic stadium.

Last term, Bonmati led Barcelona to a historic continental quadruple of titles and claimed the Nations League with her national team.

She won every trophy available to her in club football in 2023/24 -- the Spanish league, the Copa de la Reina, the Supercopa de Espana and a second-successive Women's Champions League.

Bonmati scored a goal and put in a player-of-the-match performance as Barcelona beat Lyon 2-0 in the final of the Champions League to claim their third title in four seasons.

Manchester United's Argentine forward Alejandro Garnacho won the Puskas award for the best goal of the year for his spectacular bicycle kick against Everton in the Premier League.

Paris, France
Super League promoters on Tuesday revealed they have asked FIFA and UEFA for "official recognition" of their proposed competition, renamed the "Unify League", leaning on a ruling from Europe's top court.
A22 Sports Management said it sent the proposal after discussions with various leagues, clubs and other stakeholders, revising its qualification system to base participation on annual domestic performances. It has submitted plans for competitions featuring 96 teams divided into four leagues, running from September to April, followed by a knockout phase starting with the quarter-finals.

In a statement, A22 argued last year's European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling meant that "any competition where qualification is inclusive and meritocratic, and which complies with the overall match calendar can be officially established".
Promoters also said matches would be shown live for free via a streaming platform.
"Our extensive engagement with key stakeholders revealed a number of pressing challenges facing the sport including increasing subscription costs for fans, an overloaded player calendar, insufficient investment in women's football, and dissatisfaction with the format and governance of the current pan-European competitions," said A22 CEO Bernd Reichart said.
"Our proposal is designed to directly address these challenges."
<h2>Furious backlash</h2>
European football was hit with a bombshell in early 2021, when 12 of its biggest clubs announced they had signed up to the planned Super League, triggering a furious backlash from fans and a stark warning from UEFA that clubs and players who took parts would be barred from competitions like the World Cup.
Within 48 hours, nine of the 12 rebel clubs—including six from the English Premier League—backed down and the project collapsed, but Real Madrid and Barcelona remain strong supporters of it.
Last year, the ECJ ruled that UEFA had broken EU law by abusing its "dominant position" in European football to stifle an upstart breakaway league of elite clubs.
But when the firm promoting the Super League seized on the court victory to announce plans for a new 64-team tournament to compete with or replace UEFA's flagship Champions League, it was met with scorn and rejection.
In May, a Spanish court said FIFA and UEFA had "prevented free competition" by opposing the Super League, but UEFA insisted it did not explicitly support the creation of the Super League.
"The judgment does not give third parties the right to develop competitions without authorisation and does not concern any future project or indeed any modified version of an existing project," UEFA said at the time.
European football's governing body also pointed out that it had since brought in new rules to ensure it now complied with EU law.

The Australian football players union has slammed the international football governing body FIFA after it awarded 2034 Men’s FIFA World Cup hosting rights to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday (Dec 11). The decision to award Saudi Arabia the hosting rights did not go well with the players union citing significant human rights are at risk. After Qatar, Saudi Arabia will be the second West Asian nation to host the men’s FIFA World Cup with the former hosting the showpiece in 2022 December.

<h2>Australian players union slams FIFA</h2>

"The significant human rights risks linked to this tournament are well-documented," Beau Busch, Professional Footballers Australia head said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Thursday.

"By securing hosting rights to the global game’s most prestigious event, Saudi Arabia and FIFA must ensure the rights of everyone affected by the 2034 Men’s World Cup are upheld and safeguarded.

"However, FIFA’s ongoing governance failures and lack of accountability to its own human rights commitments leave no assurance that harm can or will be prevented."

Saudi Arabia has been accused by the Australian Association of human rights abuses while LGBT activists have also showcased their anger after the FIFA World Cup rights were awarded. In the build-up to the meeting and before awarding of rights, migrant workers groups and trade unions had also raised concerns over Saudi Arabia.

On the football side of things, another Men’s World Cup in West Asia will result in significant fixture changes to football’s annual calendar. Like Qatar, Saudi will most probably host the World Cup in November-December, differing from the usual international break of June-July. This would result in fixture congestion in build-up and post-tournament.

The club fixture calendar will also take a significant hit with the season likely to start in late July or early August, before ending in late May or early June. &nbsp;

Australian players union slams FIFA "The significant human rights risks linked to this tournament are well-documented," Beau Busch, Professional Footballers Australia head said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Thursday. "By securing hosting rights to the global game’s most prestigious event, Saudi Arabia and FIFA must ensure the rights of everyone affected by the 2034 Men’s World Cup are upheld and safeguarded. "However, FIFA’s ongoing governance failures and lack of accountability to its own human rights commitments leave no assurance that harm can or will be prevented." Saudi Arabia has been accused by the Australian Association of human rights abuses while LGBT activists have also showcased their anger after the FIFA World Cup rights were awarded. In the build-up to the meeting and before awarding of rights, migrant workers groups and trade unions had also raised concerns over Saudi Arabia. Australian players union blasts FIFA for awarding 2034 World Cup hosting rights to Saudi Arabia

FIFA on Wednesday confirmed that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup, underlining the Gulf kingdom's growing influence in world sport despite criticism of the country's human rights record.

At the same time, a virtual Congress of world football's governing body confirmed that Morocco, Spain and Portugal will be joint hosts of the 2030 World Cup, in which three games will also be played in South America.

The Saudi bid was waved through by acclamation during the meeting of FIFA's 211 national member associations, with no rivals standing in its way.

"It is a proud day, a day of celebration, a day that we invite the entire world to Saudi Arabia," said Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal al Saud, the Saudi Minister of Sports.

"We intend to have an extraordinary version of the World Cup in our kingdom."

However, there was immediate condemnation from rights groups who insisted that handing the organisation of the tournament to the country puts the lives of construction workers at risk and "marks a moment of great danger".

FIFA had invoked its principle of rotating the World Cup between continents, which meant only bids from Asia or Oceania were welcome for 2034.

The unprecedented organisation of the 2030 tournament will involve three continental confederations in Europe, Africa and South America, while the next World Cup in 2026 -- the first involving 48 teams -- will take place across North America.

Controversially, the body gave potential bidders barely a month last year to submit candidacies, and Australia and Indonesia quickly abandoned their interest.

That left Saudi Arabia as the sole candidate, clearing the way for the World Cup to return to the Gulf region so soon after Qatar hosted in 2022.

The kingdom's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been using sport for some time to amass influence and improve its global image -- critics, though, say he is effectively "sportswashing" by diverting attention from Saudi Arabia's rights record.

<h2>'Moment of great danger'</h2>

The awarding of the World Cup to Saudi will make the issue of human rights a major talking point again, just as it was two years ago.

"We are inclusive and we are non-discriminatory, and we want to obtain positive social impact," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in closing remarks.

"We are of course aware of critics and fears, and I fully trust our hosts to address all open points from this process and deliver a FIFA World Cup which meets expectations."

He added that "social improvements and positive human rights impacts" are the "responsibilities of hosting a World Cup."

Rights groups highlight mass executions in Saudi Arabia and allegations of torture, as well as restrictions on women under the conservative country's male guardianship system. Free expression is severely restricted too.

FIFA's decision to award the tournament to Saudi Arabia "despite the well-known and severe risks to residents, migrant workers and visiting fans alike, marks a moment of great danger," Amnesty International and 20 other organisations said in a joint statement.&nbsp;

"Based on clear evidence to date, FIFA knows workers will be exploited and even die without fundamental reforms in Saudi Arabia, and yet has chosen to press ahead regardless," said Steve Cockburn, Amnesty's Head of Labour Rights and Sport.

<h2>'Centenary celebration'</h2>

The 2030 tournament will mark a century since the first World Cup was held in Uruguay, and as a result the unrivalled joint bid by Morocco, Spain and Portugal will also see the South American nation handed one game along with Argentina and Paraguay.

FIFA confirmed over a year ago that the joint proposal led by Morocco, Spain and Portugal was the sole contender for 2030, with all other potential candidacies having fallen by the wayside.

Four South American countries launched a joint bid in 2019, convinced that the centenary World Cup should entirely take place on the same continent where it all began.

Meanwhile, Morocco replaced Ukraine as a partner for Spain and Portugal, while South America agreed to step aside in exchange for hosting three games.

Following these "centenary celebrations" in the southern hemisphere winter, the six teams involved will cross the Atlantic to play the rest of the tournament.

Spain, which hosted the 1982 World Cup, should be the centrepiece as it boasts 11 of the 20 proposed stadiums.

Morocco -- after failing on five previous occasions to be awarded the staging of the tournament -- will become the second African nation to host the competition after South Africa in 2010.

Potential venues for the July 21 final include the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid and Barcelona's renovated Camp Nou as well as the planned Hassan II stadium between Casablanca and Rabat, set to boast a capacity of 115,000.

FIFA World Cup: Saudi Arabia becomes 2034 host; Morocco, Spain and Portugal to co-host in 2030

The draw for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup takes place in Miami on Thursday, offering a first glimpse into the fine detail of a tournament that has been viewed with indifference or even outright hostility across parts of the football world.

Thirty-two star-studded club teams will battle it out in gleaming state-of-the-art arenas in what is effectively a curtain-raiser for the 2026 World Cup taking place a year later in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

In theory, the new-look competition ought to be an enticing prospect that sells itself: a month-long football festival, the first large-scale club tournament to feature teams from all corners of the globe.

Yet for many, FIFA president Gianni Infantino's passion project is a tournament too far, an unwelcome addition to an already crowded global calendar that exhausted players say has pushed them close to breaking point.

The loudest antipathy towards the tournament, and FIFA, has come from Europe.

In October, an umbrella grouping of top European leagues, together with the players' union, FIFPro, filed a legal complaint to the European Commission accusing FIFA of abusing its position over its handling of the international fixture calendar.

<h2>Player frustration</h2>

Javier Tebas, the chief of Spain's La Liga, has been one of the Club World Cup's most outspoken critics, telling Infantino in October to cancel the tournament, citing apathy from broadcasters and opposition from clubs.

"Mr President, you know you have not sold the broadcast rights for the Club World Cup, you know you have not sold any sponsorship rights," said Tebas. "Scrap the Club World Cup. It is not needed by the players, the clubs or FIFA."

However, on Wednesday, FIFA announced it had reached a deal with British streaming service DAZN to broadcast all 63 games free to view worldwide.

A source close to the negotiations told AFP the contract was worth around one billion euros ($1.05 billion).

Players though have spoken of frustration at an ever-lengthening fixture schedule that leaves them with fewer opportunities for rest and recuperation.

Manchester City and Spain star Rodri, the winner of this year's Ballon d'Or, warned in September that players were "close" to striking over the calendar, citing the demands imposed by this season's expanded UEFA Champions League followed by the Club World Cup.

"If it keeps this way we will have no other option," Rodri said of possible industrial action. "It is something that worries us."

FIFA though has pushed back at the criticism forcefully, insisting its calendar was approved by the FIFA Council following consultation from all continents including Europe as well as FIFPro and league bodies.

The world football body also took aim at leagues in Europe who have opposed the tournament, accusing them of "acting with commercial self-interest and hypocrisy" while preferring a calendar "filled with friendlies and summer tours."

<h2>'Something historic'</h2>

Infantino meanwhile has brushed off the criticism, insisting the launch of the expanded club tournament will usher in a new era for world football.

"The FIFA Club World Cup next year will bring the magic of a national team (FIFA) World Cup into the realm of club football, and this tournament will be the start of something historic, something that will change our sport for the better, and for future generations, who will come to love it as much as we do," Infantino said last month.

The opportunity to embrace the historic opportunity touted by FIFA ultimately tempted DAZN, whose chief executive officer Shay Segev called the broadcasting arrangement a "groundbreaking deal".

The tournament itself will take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025, with the opening match hosted by Miami's Hard Rock Stadium and the final taking place at the MetLife Stadium in New York -- the venue for the 2026 World Cup final.

Europe will provide the largest contingent of teams, with 12 sides including Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan taking part.

South America will field six teams, with Africa, Asia and the CONCACAF region receiving four slots each. Oceania will be represented by New Zealand's Auckland City, while host nation the US has an additional slot, controversially awarded to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami despite the team being bundled out in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs this year.

FIFA set to reveal expanded Club World Cup schedule amid hostility

Saudi Arabia's bid to host the 2034 World Cup was considered "medium risk" for human rights by FIFA in its evaluation report, which said implementing reforms could take "significant time and effort". The release of the report Saturday comes ahead of the FIFA Congress on December 11, when a vote will be held to officially appoint the hosts for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups.

Saudi Arabia is the lone candidate for 2034 while Morocco, Spain and Portugal have formed a joint bid for the 2030 tournament, with Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay all set to host a match as part of the centenary edition.

The Saudi bid "presents a very strong all-round proposition, reflected in the results of the technical evaluation, which assesses the proposed infrastructure (both sporting and general) as well as its commercial potential," FIFA said in its report.

But football's world governing body cautioned, "in terms of human rights, the undertaking involved in implementing the various measures... particularly in certain areas, could involve significant effort and time".

FIFA said that was the basis for the elevated risk rating for a bid that received an average score of 4.2 out of 5 -- higher than the combined bid by the United States, Canada and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup.

"It is important to note that the bid involves significant opportunities for positive human rights impact," added FIFA. "There is good potential that the tournament could serve as a catalyst for some of the ongoing and future reforms and contribute to positive human rights outcomes for people in Saudi Arabia and the region that go beyond the scope of the tournament itself."

<h2>Another winter World Cup?</h2>

Saudi Arabia has yet to build several proposed stadiums for a tournament that could be held in winter, as was the case in neighbouring Qatar. The report highlighted average daytime temperatures in the capital Riyadh that exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in June and July.

Human rights, a source of deep controversy at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, threatens to become a major talking point once again in the run-up to 2034.

Rights groups highlight mass executions in Saudi Arabia and allegations of torture, as well as restrictions on women under the conservative country's male guardianship system.

Free expression is severely restricted, with some people handed lengthy jail terms over critical posts on social media.

Saudi Arabia, which is hosting several high-profile events including Formula One and the WTA Finals tennis, is often accused of "sportswashing" -- using sport to divert attention from its rights record.

"As expected, FIFA's evaluation of Saudi Arabia's World Cup bid is an astonishing whitewash of the country's atrocious human rights record," said Amnesty International. "There are no meaningful commitments that will prevent workers from being exploited, residents from being evicted or activists from being arrested.

"By ignoring the clear evidence of severe human rights risks, FIFA is likely to bear much responsibility for the violations and abuses that will take place over the coming decade.

"Fundamental human rights reforms are urgently required in Saudi Arabia, or the 2034 World Cup will be inevitably tarnished by exploitation, discrimination and repression."

Saudi Arabia 2034 World Cup bid considered 'medium risk' for human rights, says FIFA

UEFA ruled Wednesday that Kosovo had forfeited their Nations League game in Romania by leaving the pitch in stoppage time and not returning, after hearing pro-Serbia chants.

The Kosovo players walked off in Bucharest last Friday after fans in the crowd shouted "Serbia", leading to the game to be abandoned just before the end with the score 0-0.

In its ruling, UEFA deemed the Kosovo football federation "responsible for the match not being played in full" and said the team would forfeit it 3-0.

The decision means Romania will be promoted to League B of the competition as winners of their group, while Kosovo go into a promotion play-off after finishing runners-up.

The Kosovar FA also incurred a 6,000-euro fine for "the improper conduct of its team" after five players received yellow cards in the game, the same number as Romania.

UEFA fined the Romanian football federation 128,000 euros for a series of disciplinary breaches.

It also ordered the team's next home game to be played behind closed doors for "racist" chants by Romanian supporters targeting neighbouring Hungary.

In addition, Romania were sanctioned for "provocative political messages not fit for a sports event" and disturbances during the Kosovar national anthem.
