Football governing body FIFA on Friday (Nov 24) charged Lionel Messi’s Argentina for fan chaos after violence broke out at the Brazil national football team stadium of Maracana. Playing in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier, the clash was delayed by 30 minutes late Thursday evening due to fan chaos in the stands where Argentina fans were seen in an altercation with Brazil police. FIFA has now decided to charge both nations under different offences of their constitution including failure to control fans and poor security issues.

<h2>FIFA charges Brazil, Argentina</h2>

"FIFA can confirm that its Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) and the Argentinian Football Association (AFA)," FIFA said in a statement on Friday. Argentina face disciplinary action for potential breaches of 'Articles 17.2 and 14.5' of the FIFA disciplinary code related to crowd disturbance and delayed kick-off respectively.

Before the kick-off at the Maracana Stadium, fans from Argentina were seen causing chaos during the national anthem. In response, Brazilian police were seen taking violent action against the fans which resulted in unrest in the stadium. The incident saw World Cup-winning captain, Messi and his colleagues walk to the stands and stop the crowd protest. Defender Lisandro Martinez was seen stopping police from hitting the fans which caused further unrest.

After 10 minutes, Messi and his team were seen walking to the dressing room as chaos at the Maracana Stadium continued. However, after a 30-minute delay, the players re-emerged and the match got underway. Argentina dominated the contest in the backyard of their arch-rivals and&nbsp;emerged victorious 1-0 with the only goal scored by Nicolas Otamendi.

FIFA is also inspecting the charges against Brazil's breach of Article 17 which deals with preserving order and security during matches. With the conclusion of the latest international break, the teams from South America will next meet in March for the latest rounds of qualifiers as teams look to book their place in the last tournament in the USA.

The government of&nbsp;Venezuela&nbsp;lambasted Peru on Wednesday following a controversial football match, at one point accusing Lima of kidnapping its national team by refusing to allow the aircraft bringing the players home to refuel.

The diplomatic spat began following a 1-1 draw between the two countries' teams in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, after which Venezuelan players accused Peruvian police of beating them as they went to greet fans Tuesday night.

Following a delay in the plane's departure on Wednesday, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said Peru had carried out "another arbitrary act against the Venezuelans by preventing the plane bringing the team back from refueling."

"This is kidnapping as vengeance against our team which played an extraordinary match" in Lima, he added.

Almost four hours after the scheduled takeoff, however, the Rutaca airline plane finally began its journey at 2:53 pm (1953 GMT).

The delay "occurred for purely administrative reasons related to fuel supply" the company that operates Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima said.

Gil confirmed that the team was "undertaking its return to Caracas safely" after the Peruvian government ordered fuel supplies.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that the "xenophobia of that racist oligarchy of Peru has been unleashed against our noble team.&nbsp;Venezuela&nbsp;has raised its voice to protest against xenophobia, violence and aggression."

Tuesday's game marked a tumultuous night for the South American qualifiers, following a match between Brazil and Argentina in Rio de Janeiro which saw ugly clashes between fans.

<h2>They hit me twice</h2>

Venezuelan footballer Nahuel Ferraresi earlier showed bandages on his right hand, saying Peruvian police "beat me."

"These are things which should not happen. The match was over and we went to thank our Venezuelan supporters," he said.

Ferraresi said another player had handed his jersey over to fans, and he was about to throw his to the crowd when the police blocked him.

"Then others got angry, I don't know what happened, and (the police) took out their batons to hit us. They hit me twice... but it's not a serious injury."

Videos of the incident, which show Peruvian police officers brandishing their batons against the players, have gone viral on social media.

Venezuela in diplomatic row with Peru after controversial FIFA World Cup Qualifier match

International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Chief of Global Football Development Arséne Wenger remarked that timely identification of talents and providing them profound coaching at a young age is essential to grow Indian football. Speaking at a press conference with All India Football Federation (AIFF) President&nbsp;Kalyan Chaubey in Mumbai, Wenger said that developing the sport in India is an exciting and interesting endeavour for the global governing body as he insisted upon finding efficient solutions in consultation with all stakeholders of the game in the nation.

Wenger signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of FIFA with AIFF to set up the inaugural FIFA-AIFF Talent Academy at the Odisha Football Academy in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

“We are convinced that you have to put the best talents against each other together. Football is learned with the difficulties you experience by playing against good players. We want to identify good talents, give them the best coaching, quality competitions, and after that, the final step is to integrate them within the first team,” Wenger said.

Kalyan Chaubey, President, AIFF, touched upon the driving force that the Indian Super League (ISL) and other stakeholders have been towards taking Indian football forward. He opined that the synergy between the AIFF and the ISL has been paramount for the development of the sport and he motivated all authorities to work in cooperation and ensure that Indian football reaches heights so that years later they can be proud of the day this initiative with FIFA was kicked off.

“The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is having a good synergy with the Indian Super League (ISL), the club owners, and all stakeholders of Indian football. We all have been working for the development of football. The AIFF is asking everyone to push together for progress in the same direction. We can take the support of all stakeholders, so that we can feel proud of this day in the future,” Chaubey remarked.

Wenger agreed on the need to work collaboratively, adding, “This is something that we need to do together. We are here to help. We do not want anything. We just want to give from everything that we have learnt from all the countries in the world. The top one percent footballing countries in the world are the ones with better systems of education. There is a huge correlation between the quality of education and the results of the first-team.”

Wenger quipped that there is a need of having 40 such development academies to fulfil the needs of a country the size of India. However, he was convinced that proper solutions could be met with the help of all concerned stakeholders.

“In the last three days, we spoke a lot about the promise from both sides. I feel that we have cooperation here. Ideally we want 40 academies so that nobody misses to detect talent in this country. Of course, we have to find the most efficient solution and hence we need the cooperation of everybody who has potential here, right from the states, the AIFF, from sponsors who want to develop football, that’s why it’s difficult, but at the same time it is very exciting and interesting for us,” Wenger explained.

FIFA is excited with the challenge of developing football in India: Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has termed Indian football a 'gold mine', waiting to be explored. Currently on a visit to India as FIFA's chief of global football development, Wenger showed optimism for the future of football in India&nbsp;

Wenger and his team are on a three-day visit with&nbsp;the 'Invincible' manager&nbsp;scheduled to inaugurate the&nbsp;AIFF-FIFA Academy in Bhubaneshwar, a city in the southern Indian state of Odisha on Tuesday (Nov 21).

“I would say I was always fascinated by India. My target is to improve football in the world. And it is impossible that a country like India, 1.4 billion, is not on the football world map," Wenger told media during a briefing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“So imagine the potential that is here if we work well. And my main target here is to convince people that there is a gold mine here but at the moment it is not completely explored, exploited and encouraged.”

Wenger explained that a well-oriented talent development scheme could change the face of the sport in the country just the way it did in Japan.&nbsp;

“I was in Japan at the start of their football in 1995. In 1998, they were at the World Cup. So that means it is possible. You have to start early."

During the visit, Wenger met AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey with the latter expressing his thanks to him.&nbsp;

“We are so very honoured and privileged to host and welcome Mr. Wenger. His experience in football needs no introduction or explanation. I can just hope and pray that he continues to be involved with India’s Talent Development Scheme project.”

“We have been discussing this project for nearly three months now. Mr. Wenger’s visit to India and his experience and support from FIFA, I am sure will make this project a huge success.”

Wenger's visit to India coincides with the men's national team playing its second World Cup qualifiers'&nbsp;match against Qatar at the Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday. India won the opening match against Kuwait in a convincing manner and would hope to emulate similar form against a much higher ranked team.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi, on Monday (Oct 30), claimed his eighth Ballon d'Or award&nbsp;on the stage of the Chatelet Theatre in Paris whereas&nbsp;Spain's World Cup-winning star Aitana Bonmati took the women's prize. Messi edged past Manchester City's young star Erling Haaland and Frenchman Kylian Mbappe to win the award for the eighth time in his illustrious career -- most-ever -- to now lead&nbsp;arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo (5) by three, who last won in 2017.

It is to be noted that Messi has now finished among the top three a record 14 times overall, finishing runner-up on five instances.&nbsp;

Talking to Reuters, Messi said, "I couldn’t imagine having the career that I’ve had. Everything that I’ve achieved. The fortune I’ve had playing for the best team in the world, the best team in history. It’s nice to win these individual trophies. To win the Copa America and then the World Cup, to get it done is amazing."

Answering the big question on whether he will carry on till 2026 FIFA World Cup, Messi revealed, "I don't think about it. I'll enjoy (my career) day by day. There will first be the Copa America in the United States (in 2024). (The World Cup), I don't think about it."

Messi led Argentina to their first-ever World Cup glory in 36 years during last year's FIFA World Cup in Qatar, beating France in an epic final. In the tournament, the veteran ended with seven goals and&nbsp;was&nbsp;named the competition's best player.

Will Lionel Messi carry on till 2026 FIFA WC? Argentina legend reacts after eighth Ballon d'Or award

FIFA have confirmed that Saudi Arabia have submitted the only bid to host the 2034 World Cup. Australia opted against bidding for the 2034 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday (Oct 31), hours before the deadline for 'declarations of interest' was set to expire.

FIFA have confirmed that Saudi Arabia have submitted the only bid to host the 2034 World Cup. Australia opted against bidding for the 2034 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday (Oct 31), hours before the deadline for 'declarations of interest' was set to expire. Football Australia said it had decided after considering all factors. Australia's decision to skip the bidding process had long been coming, especially after Saudi Arabia opted to submit an official proposal for the marquee event last month. “We have explored the opportunity to bid to host the Fifa World Cup and – having taken all factors into consideration – we have reached the conclusion not to do so for the 2034 competition,” said the Australian FA in a statement. It added that the Down Under country was still interested in hosting the Women’s Asian Cup in 2026 and the 2029 Club World Cup. “For international tournament hosting, the Australian time zones provide significant opportunities for broadcasters, and we are within touching distance of billions of people in Asia and Oceania, which also helps to provide a strong commercial outlook for competitions,” FA said, explaining the advantage of hosting world events in Australia. Also read | 2030 Football World Cup to be held in Europe, Africa and South America, announces FIFA Why did Australia not submit the bid? As soon as FIFA last month announced the venues for the 2030 World Cup, Saudi Arabia sprang into action and submitted a letter of intent to host the event to the world football governing body. According to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), after the kingdom showed its intention to bid for the tournament, "over 70 FIFA member associations from across different continents" pledged their support. The last straw for Australia came when the Asian Football Confederation also decided to back Saudi Arabia's 2034 bid. With Australia opting out, the path for Saudi Arabia to host the quadrennial event is wide open. If all things fall in place, the football World Cup will return to Asia, 12 years after Qatar hosted the 2022 World Cup. What did FIFA announce? Last month, FIFA announced it had reached an agreement to host the 2030 World Cup across three continents viz, South America, Africa and Europe. While Morocco, Portugal and Spain will be the joint hosts for the marquee event, games will also be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. As a result, all six nations will automatically qualify for the World Cup. "In 2030, the FIFA World Cup will unite three continents and six countries, inviting the entire world to join in the celebration of the beautiful game, the Centenary and the FIFA World Cup itself," FIFA said in a statement. FIFA said the World Cup matches were being held in South America as part of the centenary celebration of the first World Cup held in Uruguay. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

World soccer governing body FIFA's deadline for bids for the 2034 finals is less than two weeks away and Saudi Arabia is the only other country to announce it will bid for the tournament.

FIFA has invited bids from Asia and Oceania for the 2034 showpiece, setting a deadline of Oct. 31. Saudi Arabia earlier this month announced it would bid and received backing from the Asian Football Confederation in its congress on Wednesday.

Australia were in talks with Indonesia about the possibility of a joint bid with Malaysia and Singapore. However, this week Indonesia said it would support the Saudi bid.

An Australian bid would represent a choice for FIFA members to vote on at their congress in Bangkok next May.

Australia co-hosted the Women's World Cup with New Zealand this year and Johnson said it wanted to build on the success of that tournament.

"We're currently in a bidding process for the women's Asian Cup in 2026. And the logic is to really extend the legacy effect ... predominantly for women's football in Australia," he told the Leaders sports business conference in London.

"We're also exploring two other major tournaments, we're exploring the 2029 Club World Cup to see if that could be an option in our region ... and we're exploring the opportunity of the 2034 men's World Cup as well.

"But bidding for the women's Asian Cup 2026 and exploring the potential opportunities - the 2029 Club World Cup and the 2034 men's World Cup."

Australia previously bid to host the 2022 World Cup, which went to Qatar, being eliminated in the first round of voting in 2010.

The 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time, will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 2030 tournament will be staged in Spain, Portugal and Morocco with Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay hosting the first three matches to mark the tournament's centenary.

Barcelona's money problems have been well-documented over the years. The club has been under intense scrutiny for its finances and now a new report has claimed that the Catalan club owes more than $212 million in transfer fees to various clubs such as Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Leeds United. According to a report in ARA, although Barcelona have found ways to secure the transfer deals, they still owe considerable debt to the clubs. The La Liga champions are expected to shell out just under $95 million over the next 12 months but will still be left with $127 million in payout to Leeds, City, Bayern and Sevilla beyond that point. The report added that Barcelona owe $25 million to Leeds for Raphinha, $14 million to City for Ferran Torres and $11 million to Bayern for Lewandowski. They also need to find $38 million to pay for Jules Kounde's transfer from Sevilla. Also read | Lionel Messi’s remarriage with Barcelona still a possibility: Reports Despite a handful of transfers over the summer transfer window, Barcelona are still looking for a defensive midfielder and two fullbacks. Joao Cancelo and Jao Felix, are both on loan deals and their performances have given a second wing to the team but owing to their outrageous transfer fees, Barcelona is bound to enter the market next year. However, plugging the gaps might be a difficult task as La Liga last month slashed Barcelona's spending cap by $429 million for the new season, down to $286 million. Only Sevilla, Villareal and Deportovo Alaves are the other La Liga clubs, operating at a lower cap than Barcelona. The problems were compounded after reports claimed that the club was under investigation for suspected "active bribery" as part of a probe into suspected corruption spanning two decades at the refereeing committee. In March, prosecutors filed a complaint over alleged payments of more than 7.3 million euros ($7.8 million) over 17 years to firms owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, who was vice-president of the RFEF's refereeing committee from 1993 to 2018. Saudi Arabia takes formal step to host 2034 World Cup, submits letter of intent to FIFA

Days after Saudi Arabia launched its official bid for hosting the 2034 World Cup, a report in DailMail quoting sources close to the matter has claimed that the kingdom hosting the quadrennial event was basically a 'done deal'.&nbsp;

After FIFA announced earlier this week that the 2030 World Cup will be held across six different nations, it has opened up the way for Saudi Arabia to mount a serious challenge for the hosting duties.&nbsp;

"A Saudi World Cup in 2034 isn't just likely, it's basically a done deal. Money has talked again, and the event will be worth billions in new cash for FIFA," the source told the publication.&nbsp;

After&nbsp;the bid, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President&nbsp;Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain pledged the&nbsp;support of the "entire Asian football family" behind Saudi Arabia. With the entire Africa expected to back Saudi Arabia as well, Australia, which had been mulling a bid as well, has been left disappointed.&nbsp;

Notably, FIFA President&nbsp;Gianni Infantino is also close to Saudi Arabia's&nbsp;crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and the latter has put forth a strategic vision to turn the kingdom into a sporting destination.&nbsp;

According to experts, the mass exodus of football players from Europe to the kingdom this summer window was the start of the rise of Saudi Arabia on the world footballing map. &nbsp;

Saudi Arabia hosting 2034 FIFA World Cup 'basically a done deal': Report

Saudi Arabia is bidding to host the 2034 World Cup. The announcement came after FIFA named a few countries as hosts of the 2030 World Cup.

Notably, the decision was made at a virtual&nbsp;meeting of the FIFA council. It will need to be confirmed in a vote with all 211 FIFA members present at an event, likely to take place before the next FIFA congress in Bangkok in 2024.&nbsp;

2030 Football World Cup to be held in Europe, Africa and South America, announces FIFA

Former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has said that the win of Argentina football team and Lionel Messi in last year's FIFA World Cup was premeditated. Notably, Argentina had won their second World Cup after beating France 4-2 on penalties in December last year. It was also the first World Cup trophy for Messi, who is touted as one of the greatest ever to play the game.

Van Gaal, who was the coach of Netherlands in the Qatar World Cup, made the comments while talking at Eredivisie awards to Dutch outlet NOS.&nbsp;

"I do not really want to say much about it," Van Gaal said. "When you see how Argentina scored their goals and how we scored our goals, and how some Argentina players overstepped the mark and were not punished, then I think it was all a premeditated game."

Van Gaal, while making such a big remark, was once more asked that if he meant that Messi should become world champion, he said, "I think so, yes.”

Notably, Netherlands were handed a tournament-ending defeat by the eventual world champions in the quarterfinals on penalties after the regulation and extra time ended at 2-2 score.

Van Gaal decided to step down after the tournament as he continues to recover from prostate cancer.

Dutch skipper Virgil van Dijk was also asked to comment on van Gaal's remark, to which he said: "I heard it this morning, indeed. And that's actually it," he told NOS. "It is of course his opinion. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. I do not share the same opinion."

The FIFA World Cup final had ended 3-3 after the regulation and extra time and then Argentina won 4-3 on penalties.

Football: Louis van Gaal, former Dutch coach, calls Argentina and Messi's win in Qatar World Cup PREMEDITATED

Spain's football federation (RFEF) has sacked&nbsp;Jorge&nbsp;Vilda, the coach of its World Cup-winning women's team, the RFEF said on Tuesday, 10 days after FIFA suspended its president for kissing national team player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth.

A new board formed after the suspension of RFEF President Luis Rubiales by soccer's world governing body FIFA over the allegedly non-consensual kiss during the World Cup victory celebration two weeks ago has terminated&nbsp;Vilda's contract.

In a statement that did not mention Hermoso, Rubiales or the scandal, the RFEF thanked 42-year-old&nbsp;Vilda&nbsp;for his "extraordinary sporting legacy.

"The coach has been key to the remarkable growth of women's football and leaves Spain as world champions and second in the FIFA rankings," the RFEF statement said.

The furore involving Rubiales has quickly spiralled into a national debate over women's rights and sexist behaviour.

Considered a close ally of Rubiales,&nbsp;Vilda&nbsp;had been under fire since last year after 15 players staged a mutiny calling for his resignation because of inadequate coaching methods and calling for conditions to match those of the men's squad.

Most of the players involved were cut from the squad even as some demands were met.

Danae Boronat, a sports presenter who interviewed Spain's leading female players for her book “Don’t Call Them Girls, Call Them Footballers”, said players accused&nbsp;Vilda&nbsp;of micromanaging, such as instructing senior players what to say in interviews.

Vilda&nbsp;and Luis de La Fuente, the men's national team manager, applauded Rubiales when he refused to resign on Aug. 25 but later issued statements condemning his behaviour.

Spain's football federation (RFEF) has sacked Jorge Vilda, the coach of its World Cup-winning women's team, the RFEF said on Tuesday, 10 days after FIFA suspended its president for kissing national team player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth. A new board formed after the suspension of RFEF President Luis Rubiales by soccer's world governing body FIFA over the allegedly non-consensual kiss during the World Cup victory celebration two weeks ago has terminated Vilda's contract. In a statement that did not mention Hermoso, Rubiales or the scandal, the RFEF thanked 42-year-old Vilda for his "extraordinary sporting legacy. "The coach has been key to the remarkable growth of women's football and leaves Spain as world champions and second in the FIFA rankings," the RFEF statement said. Spain women's national team coach Jorge Vilda fired after kiss row

World football governing body FIFA has provisionally suspended Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities in the Jenni Hermoso kiss controversy on Saturday, August 26. The decision from FIFA comes a day after Rubiales had refused to step down from his office at the Spanish FA. The 46-year-old had kissed Spanish World Cup-winning star Hermoso during the presentation ceremony after the FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Sydney last Sunday that sparked the controversy.

<h2>FIFA takes action</h2>

"The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Jorge Ivan Palacio (Colombia), in use of the powers granted by article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), has decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level," FIFA confirmed in a statement.

"This suspension, which will be effective as of today, is for an initial period of 90 days, pending the disciplinary proceedings opened against Mr. Luis Rubiales on Thursday, August 24."

FIFA opened an initial investigation into the matter on Thursday, August 24 when rumours of Rubiales’ resignation were surfacing in the Spanish media. However, in contrasting events on Friday, 46-year-old Rubiales refused to resign from his post as he continued to hold control of his office. There were expectations that he could resign from his office after heavy criticism from the media and political front. Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had called for Rubiales to step down from his office after attracting the attention of the world.

<h2>Rubiales’ contrasting speech</h2>

In a fiery speech, he said the kiss was "mutual, euphoric and consensual" and Hermoso had said "OK" when he asked her if he could give her "a peck".

He also asserted that "she was the one who lifted me in her arms and brought me close to her body".

On Friday, Hermoso and other players threatened not to participate in the national team duties as they wanted action against Rubiales’ behaviour. If no appropriate action was taken, the players would go on strike and not represent the nation in the future.

FIFA provisionally suspends Spain FA chief Luis Rubiales from football-related activities over kiss row

Spanish football federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales plans to resign on Friday after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against him over his unsolicited kiss on the mouth of player Jenni Hermoso during celebrations after Spain's Women's World Cup victory, Cadena Ser radio reported on Thursday.

Rubiales has been under fire after kissing Hermoso on the lips while handing the team their medals after they beat England 1-0 in the final in Sydney on Sunday.

The incident sparked outrage within and outside Spain, with many, including government ministers, demanding his resignation.

Pressure continued to mount during the week after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales and Hermoso said in statement that such acts "should never go unpunished".

As the backlash grew, Rubiales, who initially called his critics "idiots", issued a video apology late on Monday, but it failed to quell the uproar.

An RFEF spokesperson declined to comment.

Regional leaders of the RFEF held a crisis meeting in Madrid on Thursday to discuss Rubiales's future and options for a potential successor, a source told Reuters.

The favourites to succeed Rubiales are Pedro Rocha, head of the Extremadura football federation, and Pablo Lozano, head of the Andalusia federation, the source said.

Rubiales, who played for several lower league clubs in Spain, finished his playing career in 2009 with Hamilton Academical in Scotland.

A year later he was named President of the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE), a position he held until announcing his candidacy for the RFEF top job in 2017. He was elected in May 2018.

He promised to modernise the structure, increase turnover and make the federation more transparent, following the arrest of former president Angel Maria Villar on corruption charges.

However, Rubiales' mandate was full of controversies, including the shocking decision to sack Spain manager Julen Lopetegui two days before their opening 2018 World Cup match and accusations of wrongdoing over a multimillion-euro deal to relocate the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.

There was also a mutiny within the Spain women's squad last September, when a large group of players demanded that long-standing coach Jorge Vilda be sacked. The RFEF backed Vilda and he cut 12 of the 15 players involved in the dispute from his World Cup squad.

Football: FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Luis Rubiales over kiss controversy

Lionel Messi wasn't on the scoresheet for the first time as an Inter Miami player, but he still had two assists as his side beat MLS Eastern Conference Leaders FC Cincinnati in a penalty shootout to reach the U.S Open cup final. Is Messi still the best player in the world?

Messi leads Inter Miami to the US open final

History will be made at the Women's World Cup on Sunday when England and Spain clash in the final in Sydney with both bidding to win the tournament for the first time.

The game kicks off at 1000 GMT in front of an anticipated sell-out crowd of about 75,000 at Stadium Australia.

It will be the final act of a tournament full of shocks which began one month ago and started with 32 teams, making it the biggest Women's World Cup ever.

Now they are down to the last two and it's a final too close to call. Neither team has ever got this far before.

The two sides last met at the European Championship last summer, when hosts England squeezed into the semi-finals 2-1 in extra time and went on to lift the trophy.

Coach Sarina Wiegman and defender Millie Bright said they were attempting to think of this as just another game, but the skipper admitted there was no getting away from the enormity of the occasion.

British media has been full of references to 1966 -- when the country won the men's World Cup for the only time.

"We know how passionate our nation is back home and how much they want us to win," Bright said on Saturday.

"But for us there is a process, we have a game plan to execute and we need to play the game of our lives."

Chelsea attacker Lauren James is back from a two-match ban for stamping on an opponent in the last-16 victory on penalties over Nigeria.

It would be a surprise, however, if Wiegman makes any changes to the side that impressively saw off Colombia 2-1 and then disposed of co-hosts Australia in the semi-final.

<h2>'Next question'</h2>

Except against Nigeria, England have been mostly ruthless and machine-like in reaching the final, especially in silencing the home crowd in the 3-1 victory over Australia.

Spain are more slick and have often passed their opponents into submission, coupled with sparks of attacking flair.

England are unbeaten at the tournament, but a notable blip for Jorge Vilda's side was their 4-0 drubbing to a Japan team which hit Spain at pace on the counterattack in the group phase.

Spain had never even won a knockout match at the World Cup until this edition and their exploits are even more impressive for the turmoil that threatened to torpedo their chances.

In September last year, 15 players -- many of them from European powerhouse Barcelona -- came out and said they no longer wanted to represent their country.

They had numerous complaints, but their chief issue was with Vilda -- how strict he was, his lack of success, his tactics and his methods.

Three of the 15 mutineers returned for the World Cup and one of them, Barcelona midfield schemer Aitana Bonmati, has been among the best players at the tournament.

Vilda has been asked repeatedly by reporters at the World Cup about the missing players and was once quizzed if the ones he brought to Australia and New Zealand even liked him.

On the eve of the final he appeared to have had enough of that line of questioning, replying: "Next question, please."

He was more forthright about the spirit among his players, saying they were "united".

"The training sessions, the games, everything that's happened outside has been extraordinary," he said.

"They will have memories for the rest of their lives."

<h2>'Sorry' Prince William</h2>

Spain's Queen Letizia will be in attendance but Prince William -- chairman of England's Football Association -- has faced criticism for staying at home.

"Lionesses I want to send you a huge good luck for tomorrow," he said in a video with daughter Charlotte sitting next to him.

"We're sorry we can't be there in person but we're so proud of everything you've achieved and the millions you've inspired here and around the world."

Whoever wins, it will be a new name on the Women's World Cup.

The United States, who had been chasing a third title in a row, went out on penalties in the last 16 to Sweden.

Norway, Germany and Japan are the only other nations to have lifted the trophy.

FIFA chief Gianni Infantino said on Friday that the Women's World Cup generated more than $570 million in revenue and enabled soccer's global governing body to break even, despite raising the prize purse ten-fold compared to the 2015 edition.

The Swiss, in a typically combative speech, said the ninth edition of the FIFA showpiece event had been the "best and greatest and biggest", and vindicated the decision to raise the prize money and expand the field from 24 to 32 teams.

"Some voices were raised, would it cost too much? We don't make enough revenues, we will have to subsidise. And our opinion was, well if we have to subsidise, we will subsidise, because we have to do that," he told the FIFA Women's Football Convention.

"But actually, this World Cup generated over 570 million U.S. dollars in revenues, and so we broke even. We didn't lose any money and we generated the second highest income of any sport, besides of course the men's World Cup, at a global stage."

That was one of the few comparisons to men's football in Infantino's speech. The $440 million prize purse for the men's World Cup in Qatar is still considerably more than the $152 million being shared by the women in Australia and New Zealand.

"I say to all the women, you have the power to change. Pick the right battles. Pick the right fights," Infantino said. "Just keep pushing, keep the momentum, keep dreaming, and let's really go for a full equality. Not just equal pay in the World Cup, which is a slogan that comes up every now and then."

"Equal pay in the World Cup, we are going in that direction already. But that would not solve anything ... because it's one month every four years and it's a few players out of the thousands and thousands of players."

Infantino also rounded on critics of the choice of Australia and New Zealand as hosts, and of the tournament's expansion.

"I remember when we decided to do that, of course the usual critics, which are less and less, were saying it's not going to work and the level is too different," he said. "There would be 15-0 scores, it will be bad for women's football and its image. I'm sorry but FIFA was right. FIFA was right. As it happens quite often in the last years, FIFA was right once more."

The tournament has the potential to become one of the most significant events in the history of the hosts, following the 2000 Olympic Games. Despite facing several challenges, England has managed to reach the semi-finals. However, their toughest test yet awaits them as they take on a near-80,000-capacity crowd at Stadium Australia. High tensions prevail as the Lionesses prepare to face the Matildas in the football match. Players from both nations have downplayed the usual rivalry in sports such as cricket and netball. "I wouldn't say this can be a main rivalry in soccer," England midfielder Keira Walsh argued forward of the match. "They are a great team, and it is a semi-final. Whoever you're playing against, it is going to be an intense game. So for us, that is one of the last things we're thinking of." (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

FIFA said on Friday it was investigating a misconduct complaint involving the Zambian team at the Women's World Cup, vowing tough punishment if proven. It provided no details, citing confidentiality, but media reports said the incident involved coach Bruce Mwape allegedly rubbing a player's breasts.

"We can confirm that a complaint has been received in relation to the Zambian women's national team and this is currently being investigated," a FIFA spokesperson said. "FIFA takes any allegation of misconduct extremely seriously and has a clear process in place for anyone in football who wants to report an incident."

Zambia was eliminated at the group stage of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand and are now back home.

Allegations of sexual abuse in the Zambian women's set-up surfaced on social media last year, with the Football Association of Zambia opening an investigation.

It said at the time there had been no official complaint, but "we consider these allegations very serious".

Mwape, appointed in 2018, was repeatedly asked about it at the World Cup. He denied the accusations, calling them "fake", and dismissed suggestions he should resign.

"What environment affecting the team in particular?" he responded before their match with Spain -- which they lost 5-0 -- when pushed on the subject.&nbsp; "What are you talking about? I would like to know because there is no way I can retire without reason.

"Maybe your reason is because what you are reading from the media or from the press, but the truth of the matter should actually come out, not just on rumours."

A team spokesperson did not immediately respond on Friday.

Police in New Zealand, where the team was based, said they had not received any complaints.

"However, we were made aware of an alleged incident and after making initial enquiries, no further action was required to be taken," a police spokesperson said.

Football's governing body FIFA stressed that any allegations of abuse were handled in the strictest confidence.

"Where guilt is established, FIFA takes the strongest possible sanctions, including removing people from the game for life. Our track record demonstrates this," it said.

Zambia suffered heavy defeats to Spain and Japan before winning their first-ever World Cup match, downing Costa Rica 3-1.

There have been a series of sexual assault scandals in women's football in recent times, notably in Gabon, Haiti, the United States and Afghanistan.

Earlier this year, FIFA toughened its disciplinary proceedings for sexual assault or harassment in a revised Code of Ethics.

It removed the 10-year limitation period on prosecuting sexual offences and obliges "member associations and confederations to notify FIFA of any decisions rendered on sexual abuse".

FIFA investigates misconduct claim involving Zambia team at Women's World Cup

Spain coach Jorge Vilda says his "angry" players can shake off the mental scars of a 4-0 mauling from Japan and be a force in the knockout stages of the Women's World Cup.

The sixth-ranked Spanish were left shellshocked by a Japan side who topped Group C with a brilliant counter-attacking display in Wellington on Monday, handing the Europeans their heaviest defeat in 11 years.

Vilda is confident his squad laden with world-class quality will regroup for a last-16 clash with Switzerland in Auckland on Saturday.

"I have no doubt whatsoever that our team is going to react, that the attitude against Switzerland is going to be a different attitude," he said.

"It's the round of 16 at the World Cup and no one should lose hope.

"Mentally, of course, this has done some damage. It hurts, they are angry and I'm convinced that they'll be ready to compete. We will see in five days' time.

"We're not accustomed to this in my time with the team."

Vilda ruefully admired how well Japan coped with his team's trademark possession game, which had been effective in comfortable group wins over Zambia and Costa Rica.

Despite operating with about three-quarters of possession, Spain rarely threatened the goal, while they were repeatedly stung by Japan on the break.

"They got to the ball before we did and they closed every possible space that we had," Vilda said.

"Every time they took the ball away from us they had a counter-attack. They started a counter-attack with very little effort."

Also Read: Nigeria enter last 16 despite 0-0 stalemate with Ireland "I have no doubt whatsoever that our team is going to react, that the attitude against Switzerland is going to be a different attitude," he said. "It's the round of 16 at the World Cup and no one should lose hope. "Mentally, of course, this has done some damage. It hurts, they are angry and I'm convinced that they'll be ready to compete. We will see in five days' time. "We're not accustomed to this in my time with the team." Vilda ruefully admired how well Japan coped with his team's trademark possession game, which had been effective in comfortable group wins over Zambia and Costa Rica. Despite operating with about three-quarters of possession, Spain rarely threatened the goal, while they were repeatedly stung by Japan on the break. "They got to the ball before we did and they closed every possible space that we had," Vilda said. "Every time they took the ball away from us they had a counter-attack. They started a counter-attack with very little effort." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

FIFA Women's WC: Spain 'angry' after 0-4 mauling by Japan, says coach

Captain Wendie Renard headed in a late winner as France kickstarted their Women's World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Brazil in a heavyweight clash in Brisbane on Saturday.

After a lacklustre 0-0 with Jamaica in their opening game, France defied the Brazilian team and most of the 49,378 crowd to secure three vital points ahead of their final group match against tournament debutants Panama.

France, one of the pre-tournament favourites, controlled much of the game and took the lead in the 17th minute through veteran striker Eugenie Le Sommer with her 90th goal in 191 appearances.

Brazil hit back in the second half through Debinha, but the 33-year-old defender Renard appeared at the back post to head in an 83rd-minute winner from a corner.

French manager Herve Renard -- no relation to his captain -- said he was always confident France would bounce back from the draw against Jamaica.

"In their preparation they were focused and really concentrating on the match, so I knew they would get back on track," he said of his side.

"Sometimes it's good to get off to a shaky start at a tournament like this as it makes you more determined.

"Our objective is still to finish on top of the group so we need to keep this mindset for our next game."

<h2>Brazil disappoint</h2>

Brazil were scintillating in thrashing Panama 4-0 to open their World Cup.

Ary Borges hit a hat-trick in that big win, but she and her team never hit those heights on a perfect Brisbane evening.

Coach Pia Sundhage conceded her team had been outplayed, especially in the first half.

"We'd been well prepared leading up to the game. Everything had been good, but I could not make them play the way they played in the match before," she said.

"Second balls, loose balls, the French players were so much faster to get there and for me that's disappointing.

"The players we have are fast, they are quick, but today the first half was not good."

On a perfect Brisbane evening the French had the better of a lively first half with their attacking duo of Le Sommer and Kadidiatou Diani causing the Brazilian defence all sorts of problems.

Le Sommer went close in the 13th minute only to be denied by a diving one-handed save from goalkeeper Leticia.

Four minutes later she was not to be denied as Sakina Karchaoui put in a long diagonal cross which Diani helped on for an unmarked Le Sommer to head in.

Brazil came back into the game in the second half and were rewarded when Debinha latched onto a deflected shot from Kerolin and fired the ball past goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin to level proceedings.

The match began to open up with both teams going in search of a winner, and France went close as Grace Geyoro drew a good save from Leticia.

With time running out France struck again to secure a crucial victory.

Selma Bacha swung in a corner from the right seven minutes from time and Renard -- who had been a pre-match injury doubt -- appeared unmarked at the far post to head home and put her team on course for the knockout phase.

Brazil threw on veteran forward Marta but could not equalise a second time.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Skipper Wendie Renard gives France vital 2-1 win over Brazil

Captain Lindsey Horan scored a second-half equaliser as holders the United States came from behind to draw 1-1 with the Netherlands at the Women's World Cup on Thursday, in a rematch of the 2019 final between the teams.

Dutch midfielder Jill Roord fired home a first-half opener to threaten a momentous result in the Group E clash in Wellington.

However, US skipper Horan responded in the second half as the Americans maintained their unbeaten record at the World Cup since losing the 2011 final on penalties to Japan.

The most highly-anticipated game of the tournament's group phase was vastly different to the decider four years ago in France, which the US won comfortably 2-0 to retain their title.

This time the Dutch had the better of the first half, finding chinks which were also evident in the United States' opening 3-0 win over minnows Vietnam.

Despite dominating the final stages, the Americans couldn't find a winner, producing a hot and cold performance which ends a string of 13 successive World Cup match wins and casts some doubt on their status as favourites to lift the trophy again.

Having opened with a 1-0 win over Portugal, the ninth-ranked Dutch looked like repeating that result when Roord struck smartly in the 17th minute.

The new Manchester City signing -- who came off the bench in the Lyon final four years ago -- finished with a low drive from the edge of the box to silence thousands of travelling US supporters in a crowd of 27,312.

Seemingly ruffled by a cold, swirling wind, it took until the final third of the game for the Americans to discover their attacking verve.

Horan found space in the box to head home a 62nd-minute corner from substitute Rose Lavelle, the scorer of the second goal in the 2019 final.

It came just moments after Horan needed medical treatment after being clattered to the ground by Danielle van de Donk.

The resurgent US then came very close to unearthing a winner on two occasions.

Striker Alex Morgan found the net only for the offside flag to cut short her celebrations, and a bullet strike from Sophia Smith was kept out by a goal-line clearance from Lieke Martens.

Neither team is yet assured of a berth in the knockout phase heading into their final group games next Tuesday, when the US will face Portugal and the Dutch play Vietnam.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Defending champions USA held by Netherlands in 2019 final rematch

Japan all but booked their place in the Women's World Cup last 16 as forwards Hikaru Naomoto and Aoba Fujino scored twice in three minutes in a 2-0 win over Costa Rica on Wednesday.

A sparse crowd of 6,992 spectators saw the match in Dunedin, the lowest attendance so far at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

Japan's passage into the knock-out stages from Group C will be confirmed later if Spain beat or draw with Zambia, who the Japanese hammered 5-0 in their opening game.

The 2011 world champions Japan sit at top of the group with a perfect record of six points and have yet to concede a goal.

Spain will surely join them when they face Zambia, the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup, later Wednesday.

Costa Rica, well beaten 3-0 by Spain, were floored again by a devastating first-half spell from the Japanese who grabbed two rapid-fire goals.

Outclassed Costa Rica's tournament is realistically already over.

Substitute Gloriana Villalobos managed their one and only shot on target so far at this World Cup with nine minutes left.&nbsp;

Japan took the lead through Naomoto on 25 minutes and they made it 2-0 when they again sliced through Costa Rica's shaky defence moments later.

The 19-year-old Fujino turned her marker, dribbled into the penalty area and powered her shot inside the near post.

The scoreline would have been much higher were it not for some fine saves by Costa Rica goalkeeper Daniela Solera, who had another busy night between the posts but should have done better with both goals.

The shot-stopper was badly shaken with 25 minutes left after a mid-air collision with Japan replacement Riko Ueki when both players went for a cross.

With their final pool match against Spain still to come on Monday, Japan's seven goals so far is a record for them in World Cup group stages.

Italy started their FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 campaign with a 1-0 win against Argentina. The goal was courtesy Christina Girelli who came on the field as a substitute in the 83rd minute and immediately made an impact. The game, however, will be remembered most for the debut of Italy's 16-year-old Giulia Dragoni.
