In a second incident within three days of the commencement of the FIFA Women's World Cup, co-host New Zealand football players were evacuated following a fire at their hotel in Auckland. The team is safe and accounted for after the Saturday, July 22 fire, confirmed NZ football in a statement.

The statement read said that it "can confirm that the Football Ferns team and staff have been temporarily evacuated from the Pullman Hotel, their team base for the FIFA Women's World Cup, due to a fire.

"All of the team and staff are safe and accounted for."

The police have arrested a 34-year-old for burglary and arson, reported the Associated Press. It, however, remains unclear if the incident is related to the ongoing world cup.

"A man has been arrested following a suspicious fire at premises on Waterloo Quad, Auckland Central last night," police said. "The 34-year-old has been charged with burglary and arson and is due to appear in Auckland District Court on Monday."

CJ Bott, a defender with the football Ferns, said that some players did encounter smoke but everybody made it out safely in the end. The players spent a few hours at a nearby restaurant while the fire was brought under control, added Bott as reported by the Associated Press.

"Yeah, one of the fire exits was a bit smoky but the majority of us got down the other safe exit and we exited the building perfectly fine," said Bott.

“We had really good security on board that gave us really good instruction and we all kind of dealt with it pretty well,” said forward Gabi Rennie. “I think our team is pretty good with dealing with adversity. So it’s just another kind of test.”

Notably, a fatal shooting occurred on the morning of the first day of the tournament near a hotel where several teams were staying. NZ, during their 1-0 win against Norway on Thursday, July 20, observed a moment of silence for the victims.

The co-host play their next match against the Philippines on Tuesday, July 25 in Wellington.

FIFA Women's WC: NZ players 'safe' following fire at team hotel

Spain fired a warning shot to their Women's World Cup rivals with a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica on Friday, with superstar Alexia Putellas making a late cameo off the bench.

The Spaniards showed why they're among the favourites in a Group C mismatch in Wellington, rifling 46 shots against opponents who spent nearly the entire game defending and were flattered by the scoreline.

La Roja dominated possession from the start with their slick passing and threatened a rout when all three goals came in the space of six minutes midway through the first half.

They were joined in the 77th minute by reigning two-time Ballon d'Or winner Putellas, whose fitness had been in doubt after cutting short a training session on Monday.

Coach Jorge Vilda indicated on Thursday he would carefully manage the workload of the 29-year-old midfielder, who hasn't completed a full game since returning in April from a serious knee injury.

Putellas produced some neat touches over the closing minutes but couldn't help a frustrated Spain add to the scoresheet.

Her Barcelona team-mate Aitana Bonmati was a classy playmaker throughout most of the contest, creating many of Spain's best chances and finding the net herself.

Bonmati was one of three players who returned from a nine-month exile to play in the World Cup.

She was among a group of 15 who made themselves unavailable for selection in a player revolt against Vilda that rocked Spain's preparations.

The first goal came 21 minutes into the contest when Costa Rica defender Valeria del Campo sliced a low cross from Esther Gonzalez into her own net.

Bonmati doubled the lead while Gonzalez grabbed the third with a close-range volley.

It should have been four soon afterwards but Jennifer Hermoso was denied from the penalty spot by goalkeeper Daniela Solera, who was a critical figure in keeping the scoreline down.

Solera made nine saves, including a host of fingertip efforts in the second half, as Spain lost some fluidity.

Costa Rica are still searching for a first World Cup win, having failed to advance from the group phase in their lone appearance eight years ago, when their opening match was a 1-1 draw with Spain.

The teams share the same group as Japan and Zambia, who meet in Hamilton on Saturday.

Record crowd despite shooting incident

The early morning shooting on Thursday left two victims and the gunman dead. It occurred close to the hotels of reigning champions the United States, as well as the Philippines and Norway - who play co-hosts New Zealand in the first match of the tournament. Co-hosts Australia take on the Republic of Ireland in the second game on opening day, which will take place at Stadium Australia located in the Sydney Olympic Park. It is expected to be a full house as 80,000 tickets have already been sold out.

Fans in Sydney have been preparing for the big kickoff while the nation has enjoyed an emotional last 18 months in football. Notably, Australia’s men’s team qualified for the men’s FIFA World Cup in sensational fashion in a penalty shootout win against Peru last year.

The shooting incident has left authorities, players, and team management in a state of disbelief. Norway captain Maren Mjelde reacted to the tragic shootout and made her concerns known since her team is residing just 400 metres from the site of the incident.

"At first we didn't know what was going on, but eventually there were updates on TV and the local media," she said in a statement hours before the 0700 GMT kickoff.

"Everyone seems calm and we are preparing as normal for the game tonight," she added.

No impact on the Women’s World Cup schedule

FIFA released a statement in the aftermath of the incident and has vowed there will be no impact of the incident on the Women’s World Cup schedule.

"The participating teams in close proximity to this incident are being supported in relation to any impact that may have taken place," football's governing body added.

The Women’s World Cup will kick off with hosts New Zealand taking on Norway in the opening match. The match will start at 12:30 pm IST.

AUS v IRE Live Streaming: How to watch FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Australia vs Ireland in your country

Australia women's national soccer team, in a video, has called out the pay disparity in the prize money at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Matildas also have voiced support for the women players' 'basic right' of collective bargaining during pay negotiations.

“Seven hundred and thirty-six footballers have the honour of representing their countries on the biggest stage this tournament, yet many are still denied the basic right to organise and collectively bargain,” the players said in the video.

“Collective bargaining has allowed us to ensure we now get the same conditions as the Socceroos, with one exception – FIFA will still only offer women one quarter as much prize money as men for the same achievement."

“We call on those who run the game to work to provide opportunities for girls and women in football, whether that be players, coaches, administrators or officials,” the players added in the video.

Notably, the prize money for the FIFA Women's World Cup is $110 million compared to the $440 million offered during the men's event in Qatar last year. FIFA, meanwhile, is aiming to bring pay parity between the two events during the 2026 & 2027 world cups.

This is also not the first time Matildas have raised their voices against the pay disparity. In 2015, they went on strike to demand equal pay and successfully managed to get an equal minimum percentage as Australia's men's team at tournaments. The deal has been achieved via a collective bargaining agreement in 2019.

FIFA Women's World Cup is set to start on Thursday, July 20 and is being hosted by Australia and New Zealand together. A total of 32 teams will take part in the marquee event. Australia are placed in Group B alongside Canada, Nigeria and Ireland. The final of the event will be played on August 20.

Also Read: Ronaldo has 'no plans to play in MLS,' says Saudi league 'much better' “Collective bargaining has allowed us to ensure we now get the same conditions as the Socceroos, with one exception – FIFA will still only offer women one quarter as much prize money as men for the same achievement." × “We call on those who run the game to work to provide opportunities for girls and women in football, whether that be players, coaches, administrators or officials,” the players added in the video. The final of the event will be played on August 20. 2023 Women's World Cup: Co-host Australia call out FIFA over pay disparity

With less than three days to go for the 2023 Women's World Cup Australia have called out FIFA on the massive World Cup gender pay gap. The Matildas have also called on more countries to strike collective bargaining agreements to make the women's game as big as it can be. The total prize pot for the Women's World Cup which starts on Thursday is 110 million US Dollars that's a 300 per cent increase from the 2019 tournament but still significantly lower than the 440 million prize pot for men in Qatar last year.

CAF confirmed at a meeting of their top officials in Abidjan on Thursday that the African Football League would kick off in October, but there is confusion over the starting date. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, a guest speaker in the Ivory Coast commercial capital, said the eagerly awaited debut of the club competition would be on Friday, October 20. But the official CAF website said the eight-team first edition would kick off one day later, on Saturday, October 21.

The African Football League is the new name for what was launched last year in Tanzania as the CAF Africa Super League. CAF president Patrice Motsepe told South African public broadcaster SABC in June that the name change was necessary because some major sponsors had a problem with the original title.

"Some sponsors say the history of the Super League in Europe was not good and if you associate the name 'super' with a football competition, it has negative connotations," said Motsepe.

Speaking more recently to Qatar-based BeIN Sport, the CAF president said: "Our friends in Europe advised us not to use the expression 'super league'.

"(They based this advice on) negative associations with the recent failed attempt in European football."

A planned European Super League collapsed within 48 hours in 2021 after a backlash from fans, governments, and players, which forced nine of the 12 teams who signed up to pull out. The founding members were Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Little known

Infantino has repeatedly stressed that the situation in Africa is different from Europe with the African League backed by FIFA and CAF. Three months before the competition begins, little is known about it beyond the name change, an October 20 or 21 kick-off and a field reduced from 24 clubs to eight that have not been named.

AFP understands the line-up will include 2023 CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly of Egypt, runners-up Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, and semi-finalists Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and Esperance of Tunisia. The other entrants could be recently crowned Nigerian champions Enyimba, 11-time CAF title winners TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Petro Luanda of Angola, and Simba of Tanzania.

"There will be eight great teams, which will be followed in the future with a bigger version. We have to invest in African club football as well as national team football," said Infantino. "It is our responsibility, duty, and task, and with the work and contributions of all of us as a team, we will succeed."

CAF have said that their main annual competitions before the African Football League launches -- the Champions League and Confederation Cup -- will continue. Delegates to the Abidjan meeting heard that CAF commercial revenue rose 17 percent to $125 million (€111 mn) in the past financial year thanks to media rights and sponsorship increases. The Cairo-based organization is hoping for a major revenue boost next year as their biggest money-spinner, the Africa Cup of Nations, will be staged in the Ivory Coast from January 13.

Defending champions Senegal are among 15 nations who have secured places and the other nine will be known in September when the final qualifiers are played.

Football: Ronaldo's Al-Nassr cannot register new players due to unpaid debts- FIFA

The Indian men's football team has been handed a major boost in their pursuit for a place in the 2026 World Cup qualification after FIFA released the latest rankings on Thursday, June 29. The team coached by Igor Stimac is now ranked 100th in the world while they have also improved significantly in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) rankings which will have a massive impact on India’s place in the draw of the World Cup qualifiers. Led by Sunil Chhetri in the final, India won the Intercontinental Cup earlier in the month having got the better of Lebanon.

Massive boost for India

As per the latest standings, India’s win over Lebanon had huge consequences as they now are likely to occupy the second spot in the draws for the second round of FIFA qualifiers. India currently are 18th in the AFC rankings which will see them avoid all the teams from pot two. On the contrary, they will be the second-seeded side in the final groups of qualifiers.

India won five while drawing two matches in June which included the Intercontinental Cup and the SAFF Championships. India could also better their rankings before the draw takes place later in July if they win the SAFF Championships.

Why is it a boost for India in qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

As things stand, the second round of qualification will see nine groups of four teams each with the top two teams making the third round. Since India will avoid all the pot number two teams and will have only one pot one team in their group, they will get a significantly favoured group in the second round. India will be expected to finish as group runners-up at minimum.

If this is the case, India will qualify for round three, which will see them get a step closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While it will be a tall order, a top-two finish in the third round will see India qualify for the World Cup. While they could also make the playoffs in case they fail to seal direct qualification.

The Blue Tigers gained 4.24 ranking points after five wins and two draws in June which has seen them boost their qualification campaign. India are currently 3.16 points in advantage of Lebanon after India beat them in the Intercontinental Cup final. The result had huge consequences on both India’s FIFA as well as AFC Rankings.

FIFA Rankings: India gain massive boost in 2026 WC qualification campaign, enter top 100 after stellar June

The United States will host the expanded 32-team Club World Cup in 2025, governing body FIFA announced Friday.

"The Club World Cup 2025 will be the pinnacle of elite professional men's club football, and with the required infrastructure in place together with a massive local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The dates, host cities and match schedule for the tournament will be established at a later date, FIFA said. The US will also host the 2026 World Cup along with Canada and Mexico. The Club World Cup has been held annually in a seven-team, or sometimes six-team, format since 2005 with that year's six continental champions plus, when necessary, a representative of the host nation. FIFA announced the enlarged format in February.

The new competition is planned to include four representatives each from Asia, Africa and CONCACAF, which includes North and Central America, as well as six from South America, 12 from Europe, including the winners of last five Champions Cup, and one each from Oceania and the host country.

In theory, the last edition in the smaller format will be played in Saudi Arabia in December.

Six of the places have already been decided with five continental champions -- Manchester City, Leon of Mexico, Egyptians Al Ahly, Urawa Red Diamond from Japan, Auckland City of New Zealand -- and Al Ittihad representing the host country.

The Copa America in South American has not yet finished.

Current plans would leave a one-year gap before the expanded tournament kicks off. Continental federations have reportedly asked FIFA to ensure that their 2024 champions have a chance to play for a global title next year.

FIFA also announced on Friday it was pushing back the decision on the host of the 2030 World Cup from September or October to the second half of next year "to ensure additional consultation with all key stakeholders."

The Copa America in South American has not yet finished. Current plans would leave a one-year gap before the expanded tournament kicks off. Continental federations have reportedly asked FIFA to ensure that their 2024 champions have a chance to play for a global title next year. FIFA also announced on Friday it was pushing back the decision on the host of the 2030 World Cup from September or October to the second half of next year "to ensure additional consultation with all key stakeholders." FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura is confident the global governing body's threat of a Women's World Cup TV blackout in Europe this year will bring broadcasters to the table with improved offers for the rights. The rights are being sold separately from the men's World Cup for the first time and FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last week that Britain, Spain, France, Germany and Italy would face a blackout unless "unacceptable" bids were improved.

"Those who bought the rights (to the last Women's World Cup) at that time in Europe know how much it brings, because we have reached record numbers during many matches," Samoura told Australia's Fox Sports News on Saturday. "Today, we are just asking them to revisit their figures and discussion are ongoing and I'm sure that an agreement will be reached.

Some 1.12 billion viewers tuned into the 2019 World Cup in France across all platforms, according to a FIFA audit of the tournament.

Infantino said broadcasters had offered only $1 million-$10 million for the rights for this year's tournament in Australia and New Zealand, compared to $100 million-$200 million for the men's World Cup.

Samoura said that the lower offers might have been partly the result of "unconscious bias" against the women's game but that improved offers made solid financial sense.

"It's an opportunity to tell the world that we all know that women football is the only game in the world today that has unparalleled potential to grow," she added. "And this should be reflected also in the commercial deals that we are selling with you."

Former FIFA Council member Moya Dodd said this week that the governing body had itself devalued the rights of the Women's World Cup by historically bundling them with those of the men's tournament.

FIFA's general secretary confident of bringing broadcasters to table for 2023 Women's World Cup

Former FIFA Council member Moya Dodd has criticised Gianni Infantino's threat of a Women's World Cup broadcast blackout in Europe this year and said the governing body is responsible for the tournament being historically undervalued. FIFA is selling TV rights to the women's tournament separately from the men's for the first time and President Infantino said Europe's "Big 5" nations face a blackout unless broadcasters improve on their "unacceptable" offers.

Broadcasters from Britain, Spain, France, Germany and Italy had offered only $1 million-$10 million for the rights, compared to $100 million-$200 million for the men's World Cup, he added. Dodd, an ex-Australia international, said the broadcast industry had undervalued the women's tournament as FIFA had sold the rights together with the men's. "Now that FIFA has decided to sell the rights separately, it's no surprise that the buyers don't want to pay the same big numbers twice," Dodd told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"Effectively, the industry was trained to pay big money for the men's World Cup and treat the women's equivalent as worthless. At the same time, the women were told they didn't deserve prize money or equal pay because they didn't bring the revenues. It's actually quite outrageous for FIFA to now say that all women's revenues will go straight into women's football since it overlooks the fact that the value of women's rights has until now been used to inflate the value of men's football."

Dodd said that instead of threatening broadcasters, FIFA should review all of its bundled deals and attribute a fair proportion to the women's game. "If in fact, the Women's World Cup gets 50-60 per cent of the viewers of the men's, as FIFA says, that should amount to a sum in the billions," she added.

FIFA did not comment on Dodd's remarks but Infantino earlier said that "100 per cent of any rights fees paid would go straight into women's football, in our (FIFA's) move to promote actions towards equal conditions and pay". In March, FIFA announced that a total package of $152 million would be on offer at this year's tournament – three times more than at the 2019 edition in France and over 10 times more than the amount offered at the 2015 tournament in Canada.

The Women's World Cup will be held from July 20-Aug 20 in Australia and New Zealand.

FIFA responsible for undervaluing Women's World Cup, says former FIFA Council member Moya Dodd

Europe's top soccer nations face a broadcast blackout for this year's Women's World Cup unless media can improve on their "disappointing" offers for the rights, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.

Offers from "Big 5" European countries were not acceptable to football's world governing body and a "slap in the face" of the players and "all women worldwide", Infantino said.

The 'Big 5' nations are Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany and France.

"To be very clear, it is our moral and legal obligation not to undersell the FIFA Women’s World Cup," Infantino said at a World Trade Organization meeting in Geneva.

Due to the time-zone difference, Women's World Cup matches will be held outside prime-time viewing hours for European markets but Infantino said that was no excuse.

"Maybe ... it’s not played on prime-time in Europe, but still, it is played at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m., so it is quite a reasonable time," he said.

Football: FIFA warns of Women's World Cup broadcast blackout in Europe amid disappointing offers for rights

Argentina will host the Under-20 World Cup from May 20 to June 11, FIFA said Monday, after taking the tournament from Indonesia just weeks before kick-off.

Having been awarded hosting rights, Argentina will also participate in Indonesia's place. The team had failed to qualify on merit.

"FIFA is delighted to announce that this year's edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup will take place in Argentina, as the home of the world champions opens its doors to tomorrow's superstars of world football," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement.

FIFA withdrew hosting rights from Indonesia last month after protests against Israel's participation the tournament.

Indonesia and Israel do not have formal diplomatic relations, and support for the Palestinian cause in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation runs high.

Argentina put itself forward as an alternative host, and FIFA conducted an on-site inspection of facilities last week.

The draw will take place on April 21 in Zurich.

Hours before Monday's FIFA announcement, the Argentine government expressed its full backing for the hosting bid by the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

This despite the country facing deep economic woes, with tens of billions in IMF debt and year-on-year inflation exceeding 100 percent.

World champions Argentina have won the most Under-20 World Cups, with six in total.

Argentina replaces Indonesia as U-20 World Cup host, says FIFA

With 100 days to go until the first ball is kicked at the 2023 Women's World Cup, the tournament fever is most definitely kicking in and fans couldn't be more excited. As per reports, Organisers say they are on course to sell a record 1.5 million tickets for the tournament being held in Australia and New Zealand, with around 650,000 having been sold already.

100 days to Women’s World Cup, calls for gender equity grow

FIFA has predicted the women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will be a "watershed" moment that propels the game to another level, with the target to eventually rival the men's version.

Women's football is already enjoying a surge in popularity in some countries, and the tournament looks set to spark further global interest.

With 100 days till kick-off, FIFA's chief women's football officer Sarai Bareman told NewsCorp Australia in comments published Tuesday that more than two billion viewers were expected to tune in, double the previous tournament in France, won by the United States.

Record attendance is also predicted, with 650,000 tickets already snapped up. The next phase of sales opened Tuesday.

Bareman said she believed the event would be a major turning point and a driver for social change, creating role models for young girls and helping promote gender equality.

"People will be saying, 'That was the watershed moment that changed everything and took the game to the next level'," she said.

"And that's in every aspect -- commercially, participation, popularity and growth.

"I think people will really look back and choose the women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as that watershed moment where the growth, which is already exponential, just took off to the absolute next level."

Bareman, a New Zealand-born former Samoan international, said the ultimate goal was to grow the tournament to rival the men's and get females on equal footing in terms of pay.

"We know the men's World Cup is the primary source of revenue for FIFA and football, and that generates in excess of $US5 billion per edition, and that's a clear target for women's football," she said.

"We want to get to that level. The first World Cup for men was in 1930, it wasn't until 61 years later the first women's World Cup was introduced, we're still in our infancy as a product.

"But we have to look at what's happening in the men's game as an inspiration and a target, for me it's got to be in the billions and we have to keep pushing until we get to that level."

The tournament, which will take place in five Australian and four New Zealand cities, has been expanded from 24 to 32 teams for the first time.

It kicks off when New Zealand face Norway in Auckland and Australia meet Ireland in Sydney.

Despite Bareman's upbeat outlook, some broadcasters have reportedly made low-ball offers for rights to screen the event, a move slammed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino as "not acceptable".

The concerns are around some games being played at night or the early hours of the morning in lucrative markets in Europe and the Americas.

Bareman told NewsCorp that broadcasters underbidding could miss out entirely.

"We do have to hold the line and make sure that for the good of the next generations of female footballers, that they are given the opportunities afforded their male counterparts," she said. "We can only do that by ensuring its commercial value is recognised.

"It could be the case (some countries miss out), we're still in the negotiation phase right now which is typical, often these things do come down to the wire so that's nothing unusual."

Brazil are also likely to pursue Carlo Ancelotti as their manager with him keen on the job according to some reports. Belgium are at No. 4, with England next after two wins including beating Italy.

Peru was stripped of hosting the men's Under-17 World Cup because FIFA said the country was not ready to stage the tournament later this year. The decision comes one week after FIFA took the men's Under-20 World Cup from Indonesia.

Indonesia has been stripped of the right to host the under-20 soccer World Cup, global governing body FIFA said on Wednesday. The decision to remove Indonesia as host of the May 20-June 11 tournament was taken after its football federation (PSSI) said it had cancelled the draw after the governor of the largely Hindu island of Bali refused to host Israel's team.

"FIFA has decided, due to the current circumstances, to remove Indonesia as the host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023," a FIFA statement said.

Indonesia's president said on Tuesday that Israel's participation in the Under-20 World Cup to be hosted by his country meant no change to its foreign policy, stressing amid domestic protests that sport and politics should not be mixed.

Joko Widodo confirmed he had sent Erick Thohir, a cabinet minister and former Inter Milan chairman who heads the national football association (PSSI), to talk to soccer's world governing body FIFA after the draw for next month's tournament was cancelled over opposition to Israel taking part.

Jokowi, as the president is popularly known, underlined Indonesia's support for Palestine and a two-state solution and said Israel's qualification was secured long after his country won hosting rights.

"I hereby guarantee Israel's participation has nothing to do with the consistency of our foreign policy position toward Palestine, because our support for Palestine is always strong and sturdy," he said in a livestreamed address.

Meanwhile FIFA were determined not allow Indonesia to host the tournament and further highlighted their support to Israel.

"A new host will be announced as soon as possible, with the dates of the tournament currently remaining unchanged. Potential sanctions against the PSSI may also be decided at a later stage.”

International football's governing body FIFA stripped Indonesia of hosting right on Wednesday over what an Indonesian official said was a failure to honour its commitments to the tournament.

FIFA strips Indonesia of U-20 World Cup after calls for Israel ban

FIFA have extended bans imposed on past and present Juventus officials to apply worldwide, the soccer governing body said on Wednesday, with Tottenham Hotspur's current managing director of football Fabio Paratici among the individuals affected by the move.

In January, Serie A's Juventus were deducted 15 points for the season by an Italian soccer court investigating the club's transfer dealings and finances.

The court also imposed bans from holding office in Italian soccer on a number of the club's officials.

These included a 30-month ban for former sports director, Paratici, who joined Tottenham in 2021 following an 11-year stint at Juventus.

Juventus have denied wrongdoing and said their accounting was in line with industry standards. They have also lodged an appeal against the ruling.

"FIFA can confirm that following a request by the Italian FA (FIGC), the Chairperson of FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the sanctions imposed by FIGC on several football officials to have worldwide effect," a FIFA spokesperson told Reuters.

FIFA's decision leaves Paratici's future at Tottenham in doubt and adds to the uncertainty surrounding the London club, who are currently searching for a new manager after parting ways with Antonio Conte on Sunday.

FIFA has agreed to pay clubs an extra $146 million to release their players for the men's World Cup. FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Uefa counterpart Aleksander Ceferin were present at the ECA general assembly in Budapest for the announcement.

FIFA's compensation paid to clubs that release players for the men's World Cup has been increased by nearly 70% to $355 million for the 2026 and 2030 tournaments, the global soccer governing body and the European Club Association (ECA) said on Monday. The Club Benefits Programme affords clubs a share of national team competition revenues in return for releasing players and also protects clubs in case their players are injured on international duty.

The previous amount earmarked for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups was $209 million. A renewed Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Monday at the ECA General Assembly in Budapest, Hungary.

"We are delighted to have signed this landmark agreement," ECA Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi said. "The MoU recognises the central role of clubs in football globally and ensures that they are properly represented in decision making around issues which affect them."

Earlier this month, FIFA had announced a 32-team Club World Cup will be played every four years from June 2025, replacing its annual competition which featured seven teams.

The decision was met with opposition from leagues such as Spain's LaLiga but the MoU will now have both FIFA and the ECA working together on its various sporting and commercial aspects for the 2025 edition.

"FIFA and ECA will also now establish closer working practices on a future new Club World Cup... and working together on future editions including on potential structures for managing the commercial rights going forward."

FIFA also announced a newly structured international calendar which its president Gianni Infantino said had been endorsed by the ECA.

"To have the new International Match Calendar endorsed by ECA provides the necessary balance between club and national team football," Infantino said. "We have exciting projects ahead, including the new FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 and the new FIFA women's Club World Cup. A close collaboration with clubs in Europe, and the rest of the world, will be essential for the success of those events."

FIFA to pay clubs whopping $355 million for sending players to 2026, 2030 World Cups

North African nation Morocco will join forces with Spain and Portugal in a three-way bid to host the 2030 soccer World Cup, officials confirmed on Tuesday (March 14). Spain and Portugal had initially been joined by Ukraine as a potential partner for their 2030 bid, but with the latter's war with Russia having no end in sight, Morocco have stepped in.

"I would like to announce that the Kingdom of Morocco has decided, together with Spain and Portugal, to present a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup," Morocco's King Mohammed VI said in a letter read by the country's minister of sport Chakib Benmoussa in Kigali, where soccer body FIFA hosts its 73rd Congress on Thursday (March 16).

"This joint bid, which is unprecedented in football history, will bring together Africa and Europe, the northern and southern Mediterranean, and the African, Arab and Euro-Mediterranean worlds," added Benmoussa.

Morocco have bid for several World Cup finals in the past, coming closest in the race to stage the 2010 tournament where they lost out to South Africa. They stunned the world at the tournament in Qatar last year when they became the first African side to reach the semi-finals before losing to France and eventually finishing in fourth behind Croatia. The African nation also hosted the 2022 Club World Cup, which was delayed due to the Qatar World Cup and held last month.

Morocco confirms joint bid for 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal

Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as president of FIFA till the year 2027, after running unopposed at the congress of world football’s ruling body. Infantino promised record revenues in the next four-year cycle for the premier body.

Gianni Infantino re-elected as FIFA president till 2027 after standing unopposed

Swiss lawyer and administrator Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as the President of FIFA unopposed at the congress of world football's governing body on Thursday, March 16 in Kigali. Infantino, who succeeded Sepp Blatter in 2016 will serve at the helm until 2027, post the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 52-year-old was waved in for a third term by acclamation, just as he was four years ago, by delegates from the 211 member federations.

"To all those who love me, and I know there are so many, and also those who hate me, I know there are a few: I love you all," Infantino told delegates in the Rwandan capital, where the voting system did not register the number of dissident voices.

While FIFA statutes currently limit a president to a maximum of three four-year terms, Infantino has already prepared the ground to stay until 2031, declaring in December that his first three years at the helm did not count as a full term.

Infantino, who staunchly defended Qatar's hosting of last year's World Cup as the Gulf state's treatment of migrant workers, women and the LGBTQ community came under the spotlight, has overseen the expansion of the men's and women's World Cup and huge increases in FIFA revenues. Norwegian Football Federation president Lise Klaveness had said she would not support Infantino and tabled a proposal to discuss at the congress "FIFA's responsibilities to remedy human rights abuses" in relation to the Qatar World Cup and future tournaments.

However, Infantino's mainly European-based opponents were not able to put forward a candidate to stand against the man who was once Michel Platini's number two at UEFA.

48-team FIFA WC in 2026

"There is a lot to be looking forward to," Infantino said as he turned thoughts to the next four years and declared the 2026 World Cup, the first edition to be enlarged to 48 teams, will be "the most inclusive World Cup ever".

FIFA announced on Tuesday that the tournament in North America will feature 104 matches, a huge increase from the 64 at the most recent World Cup, as it will start with 12 groups of four teams.

The upcoming women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand later this year will be the first to feature 32 teams, up from 24 teams at the last edition in 2019.

Infantino is also planning to introduce a new, expanded Club World Cup to be played every four years starting in 2025 and featuring 32 teams.

"We need more, not fewer, competitions worldwide," he told delegates at the 73rd FIFA Congress.

Infantino has also announced projected income of $11 billion in the four years up to 2026, compared to $7.5 billion in the last four-year cycle ending in 2022.

But he said that figure did not include revenues generated by the Club World Cup, suggesting the final amount of money generated will be even greater.

Those improved financial results allow FIFA to keep on increasing the amount of money it provides in subsidies to federations, in turn helping ensure many of them will continue to back Infantino.

In order to make football "truly global," as Infantino says, at a time when leading European clubs are able to hoard talent and wealth, FIFA distributes money evenly.

And so the likes of Trinidad and Tobago and Papua New Guinea receive the same amount as Brazil, and each has one vote at the congress.

As long as the FIFA president keeps on his side the 35 Central American nations, including numerous Caribbean islands, or the 54 African federations, he need not worry about upsetting the powerful European nations.

That is why failed plans for a biennial World Cup, or the decision to ban rainbow-themed "One Love" armbands promoting LGBTQ rights at the World Cup in Qatar, did not stop Infantino eyeing a new term.

Yet the fractures in football show no sign of healing as long as Infantino's expansion plans continue.

For example the World Leagues Forum, bringing together 44 leagues worldwide, has complained that FIFA did not consult with them before announcing plans for the new Club World Cup, which will be shoehorned into an "already overloaded" calendar.

Unopposed Gianni Infantino re-elected as FIFA President; set to take charge until 2027

The 2026 football world cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico is going to be a marathon affair with FIFA confirming a record 104 matches in the showpiece event. The tournament will be the first to include 48 teams.

48 teams, 104 matches: Has FIFA devalued the football World Cup?

The expanded 2026 men's World Cup in North America will start with 12 groups of four teams, a change from the original planned format of 16 groups of three, football's world governing body FIFA announced on Tuesday.

"The revised format mitigates the risk of collusion and ensures that all the teams play a minimum of three matches, while providing balanced rest time between competing teams," FIFA said of the format for the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, up from 32 sides at the recent tournament in Qatar.

It means that there will be 104 matches played, a huge increase on the 64 games at last year's tournament.

FIFA's original plan for 2026, when the World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, was for 16 groups of three teams, from which the top two would advance to a last 32.

The new decided format means the top two in each group will go through to the knockout round along with the eight best third-placed sides.

As a result, the finalists, and the teams finishing third and fourth, will play a total of eight games instead of the current seven.

The decision comes after a dramatic group stage at the tournament in Qatar convinced FIFA that a rethink was needed.

"The groups of four have been absolutely incredible until the last minute of the last match," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in December.

Tuesday's decision was announced following a FIFA Council meeting in the Rwandan capital Kigali, at which it confirmed the next men's World Cup final will be played on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Infantino is expected to be waved in for a new four-year term as president as he stands unopposed for re-election at Thursday's FIFA Congress.

Here's the TRUTH As a result, the finalists, and the teams finishing third and fourth, will play a total of eight games instead of the current seven.
