A ruthless Japan moved to the brink of qualifying for their eighth straight World Cup after beating old rivals China 3-1 away on Tuesday.

Headers from Koki Ogawa and Ko Itakura put runaway group leaders Japan two goals up at half time before Lin Liangming pulled one back for China early in the second half.

Ogawa snuffed out China's hopes of a comeback with his second of the game six minutes later to silence the crowd of 45,000 in Xiamen.

Loud booing greeted the Japanese national anthem before kick-off and the game was briefly stopped in the first half when a fan invaded the pitch.

"It was tough at times and we knew that the opening goal was going to be key," said Dutch-based striker Ogawa.

Japan were playing their first senior international in China in nine years and there is a long history of rivalry between the two countries.

There was a heavy police presence outside the Xiamen Egret Stadium, where about 750 Japan fans were expected to be in attendance.

"All the players got us this win today," said Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu.

"The players on the pitch, the players on the bench and those that weren't on the bench today -- it was down to their energy that we won."

The convincing victory gave Japan five wins and a draw in Asian qualifying Group C and took them to within touching distance of a place at the 2026 World Cup.

The top two teams in each of the three groups will reach the showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Second place in Group C is wide open after Indonesia stunned Saudi Arabia 2-0 in Jakarta with Marselino Ferdinan scoring either side of halftime.

It left Australia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and China all on six points ahead of the Socceroos' visit later Tuesday to Bahrain, who have five.&nbsp;

<h2>Short-lived joy</h2>

Japan made several changes to the team that beat Indonesia 4-0 on Friday with Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma and Crystal Palace's Daichi Kamada among those dropping to the bench.

Ogawa opened the scoring in the 39th minute, planting a firm header past goalkeeper Wang Dalei direct from a corner.

Japan doubled their lead just before the half-time whistle and again it came from a corner.

Koki Machida flicked on Junya Ito's delivery and Itakura was unmarked at the back post to nod the ball home.

Despite being behind China gave a much-improved performance after losing 7-0 to Japan in Saitama in their opening group game.

The hosts pulled a goal back three minutes after the break.

Xie Wenneng cleverly dummied Wei Shihao's pass and Lin slotted the ball past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

China's joy lasted just six minutes before Ogawa headed in another Ito cross to restore Japan's two-goal cushion.

Japan are home to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in their next fixtures in March, with the World Cup within grasp.

"These last two games were difficult as we expected, but it was really positive to get two wins," said Itakura.

"There are lots of things we need to improve but it was positive and we'll get ready for the next games."

Japan move closer to FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification with crushing win over China

The English Football Association has issued an apology it said that shots are not a requirement for women to play football in the country. Although FIFA rules require all players both male and female to wear shorts. Watch to know more.

FIFA has announced plans to review certain aspects of its transfer rules following a verdict from the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The decision by the ECJ addresses concerns related to the fairness and transparency of current regulations governing player transfers across European clubs. FIFA aims to ensure that its transfer system aligns with the ruling while maintaining competitive balance and protecting the rights of players and clubs. The review may result in changes to transfer fees, contract terms, or player movement policies, as FIFA works to comply with European legal standards and uphold the integrity of the sport.

FIFA To Review Some Aspects Of Transfer Rules After ECJ Verdict

Major bodies representing footballers and football clubs in Europe on Monday filed a complaint to the European Commission accusing FIFA of abusing its position over changes to the international match calendar and tournament expansions.

Football's world governing body "holds conflicting roles as governing body and competition organiser, which give rise to a conflict of interest," FIFPro Europe, the European Leagues body and Spain's La Liga said in a statement.

The bodies presented their complaint at a press conference in Brussels, saying that FIFA's "imposition of decisions on the international calendar is an abuse of dominance and violates EU law".

FIFPro is the global players' union while European Leagues brings together more than one thousand clubs from 33 countries around Europe.

Its member leagues include the English Premier League, as well as the leagues in Italy, Germany and France, but not La Liga, which joined the complaint separately.

Citing recent European court rulings related to the breakaway Super League and the Lassana Diarra case, the bodies said FIFA's rules and conduct "harm the economic interests of national leagues, and the health and safety of players in European football".

"A legal challenge before the European Commission has become a necessary course of action to safeguard the European football sector," they added.

FIFA has been accused of a failure to consult over recent changes to the calendar, such as the introduction of a 32-team Club World Cup.

The first edition of the expanded Club World Cup will take place in the United States in June and July next year and 12 European clubs are due to feature.

Many of the continent's leading players will therefore be obliged to participate at a time when they would otherwise have been afforded a long close-season break, a year ahead of the expanded 48-team World Cup in North America.

A recent FIFPro report accused football's governing bodies of putting players' health at risk amid a constantly growing calendar, while some leading players have evoked the possibility of going on strike to protest against the increasing demands being made of them.

Representatives of domestic leagues, meanwhile, have voiced concerns that their competitions will suffer the most as top players will inevitably miss more domestic matches in order to rest, damaging their brands.

FIFA has previously hit back at criticism and accused leagues of acting with "commercial self-interest (and) hypocrisy".

"Those leagues apparently prefer a calendar filled with friendlies and summer tours, often involving extensive global travel," the body said in July after it first emerged that legal action was planned.

Football players and clubs unions file complaint against FIFA to EU over calendar dispute

World football's governing body FIFA made no verdict either way Thursday on a Palestinian request to suspend Israel, instead launching committee investigations to inform an eventual decision.&nbsp;

At FIFA's congress in Bangkok in May, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) called for its Israeli counterpart to be suspended and for Israeli teams to be banned from FIFA events.

FIFA was initially set to hold an extraordinary session of its ruling council before July 20 to review the independent legal analysis and decide how to proceed.

However the deadline was pushed back to give legal experts more time to complete a report.

At the organisation's headquarters in Zurich on Thursday, the FIFA council adopted the recommendations and conclusions reached in the legal analysis.

It decided that its disciplinary committee would be mandated to investigate the alleged offence of discrimination raised by the PFA.

Meanwhile the FIFA governance, audit and compliance committee "will be entrusted with the mission to investigate -- and subsequently advise the FIFA Council on -- the participation in Israeli competitions of Israeli football teams allegedly based in the territory of Palestine."

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement: "The FIFA Council has implemented due diligence on this very sensitive matter and, based on a thorough assessment, we have followed the advice of the independent experts.

"The ongoing violence in the region confirms that, above all considerations... we need peace.

"As we remain extremely shocked by what is happening, and our thoughts are with those who are suffering, we urge all parties to restore peace to the region with immediate effect."

The 2027 men's Champions League final will not be played in Milan amid uncertainties over the future of the San Siro stadium, European football's governing body UEFA said on Tuesday.

"As the Municipality of Milano could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings would not be affected by refurbishment works in the period of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to assign the final to Milan," UEFA said in a statement.

UEFA added it was reopening "the bidding process to appoint a suitable venue, with a decision expected in May/June 2025".

Milan will not host 2027 men's Champions League final, bidding process reopened, says UEFA

Fosir Mia moved to Saudi Arabia thinking he would earn a handsome salary as an electrician, only to find himself hauling steel rods in harsh desert heat for paltry pay.

After 13-hour shifts at a construction site outside Riyadh, the Bangladeshi national would return to the room he shared with 11 other workers, then fight for a turn at the gas stove so he could make dinner before repeating the routine the next day.

Now back home, the 35-year-old says he was never paid for seven of his 17 months in the Gulf kingdom. He warns that a pending construction boom -- for stadiums for the 2034 World Cup and other large-scale projects -- could expose others to similar exploitation.

"There is a lot of opportunity, but also a lot of opportunity for suffering," said Mia, who told AFP he saw project managers beat fellow labourers who dared to complain.&nbsp;

Unpaid wages, shoddy housing and hours of toil in life-threatening heat are already common grievances for migrant workers in Saudi Arabia -- some of whom, like Mia, say recruiters lied to them about the jobs they would be doing and how much they would make.

The world's biggest crude oil exporter says strengthening workers' rights is a priority under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 economic and social reform agenda, which aims to lay the groundwork for a prosperous post-oil future.

"We take allegations of forced labor extremely seriously, and we investigate any claims of this nature thoroughly," a spokesperson for the Saudi human resources and social development ministry said in response to questions from AFP.

Human rights groups nonetheless fear problems like those described by Mia could explode as Saudi Arabia gears up to host the men's football World Cup, for which it is the sole candidate.

The FIFA Congress is set to formally approve Riyadh's bid in December, and last month Saudi authorities unveiled plans to construct 11 new stadiums that labour unions estimate will easily require manpower in the hundreds of thousands.

<h2>'Window of opportunity'</h2>

Equidem, a London-based labour rights charity, says the Saudi World Cup bid creates a "window of opportunity" for reforms.&nbsp;

But if nothing changes, "tens of thousands of workers will be subjected to modern slavery and forced labour," Equidem founder Mustafa Qadri told AFP.&nbsp;

"Lives will be literally destroyed."&nbsp;

The kingdom's "kafala" sponsorship system binds foreign workers to their employers, making it difficult for them to leave their jobs.

In 2021 Riyadh announced the easing of some kafala-related restrictions, specifically when it comes to requesting exit permits, but activists say the changes were limited and exempted millions, notably domestic workers.&nbsp;

In June, the Building and Wood Workers' International union took its concerns to the International Labour Organization, filing complaints on behalf of 21,000 alleged victims of "severe human rights abuses" and wage theft in Saudi Arabia.&nbsp;

The complaints focus on two Saudi-based construction firms that went bankrupt in 2016.

Both BWI and Equidem contend conditions for migrant workers have not improved in a country where non-Saudi nationals account for 13.4 million people out of 32.2 million total.

The Saudi human resources ministry spokesperson said such criticism was misleading.

"Unfortunately, there have been repeated allegations that are based on inaccurate information or that fail to recognize the significance of the reforms implemented and the magnitude of their positive impact," the spokesperson said.

"The Kingdom has already rectified and provided compensation for the vast majority of the historic cases of unpaid wages, with the process ongoing for reviewing the remaining few."

<h2>'Secret' suffering</h2>

Similar concerns over workers' welfare dogged neighbouring Qatar ahead of its hosting of the 2022 World Cup.&nbsp;

Amnesty International and other rights groups claimed thousands of migrant workers died in the lead-up to the tournament, though Doha has said only 37 workers on World Cup projects perished -- and only three in work-related accidents.&nbsp;

Former migrant workers in Saudi like Vyel say there is good reason for scepticism.&nbsp;

Needing money to treat his mother's heart disease, the 52-year-old from the Philippines took a cushy-sounding job coordinating social events for oil workers in eastern Saudi Arabia.&nbsp;

But the firm failed to pay him regularly and he spent months living in a crowded, bedbug-infested warehouse before finally leaning on wealthy friends to buy him a ticket home.

He estimates his former employer owes him roughly $16,700, and he still feels ashamed he could not send more in remittances during his time abroad.&nbsp;

Even today he cannot bring himself to tell relatives the worst details about his time in Saudi Arabia: the power outages, the piles of garbage outside the warehouse, the rats that scurried around at night.

"I kept all those things secret," he told AFP.&nbsp;

"Of course I wouldn't want my parents to worry."

FIFA is investigating a video circulating on social media that showed members of the Argentina national team singing about France's players in a way that the French Football Federation (FFF) said was "racist and discriminatory".

The FFF said on Monday that it would file a complaint to the global soccer governing body over the video, in which Argentina players sing about France striker Kylian Mbappe's African descent. The video was posted by Argentina forward Enzo Fernandez on Instagram amid the team's celebrations following a 1-0 victory over Colombia to win the Copa America.

"FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into," a FIFA spokesperson said in a statement. "FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone including players, fans and officials."

Fernandez later apologised on social media, saying he had gotten "caught up in the euphoria of our celebrations." "The song included highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words," he wrote.

Fernandez's Chelsea club team mate Wesley Fofana earlier described the video as "uninhibited racism". However, Argentina's Vice President Victoria Villarruel defended Fernandez and the team, saying she would not tolerate the actions of a "colonialist" country.

"No colonialist country is going to intimidate us for a song on the pitch or for telling the truths they don't want to admit," Villarruel posted on her account on X.

"Argentina is a sovereign and free country. We never had colonies or second-class citizens. We have never imposed our way of life on anyone.

"But neither will we tolerate that they do it to us.... Enzo I support you, (Lionel) Messi, thanks for everything! Argentinians always hold your head up high."

Chelsea said in a statement on Wednesday all forms of discriminatory behaviour were completely unacceptable. "We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome," the English Premier League club said.

FIFA investigating video after France alleges racism against Copa America winners Argentina

The professional footballers' unions of England (PFA) and France (UNFP) took FIFA to court in Brussels on Thursday (May 13) to challenge the timetable "unilaterally set" by the world body, in particular its new Club World Cup in 2025.&nbsp;

Players' unions have complained that the expanded Club World Cup, due to take place in the United States in June and July next year, is an unacceptable additional burden on players.

The organisations "believe that these decisions violate the rights of players and their unions under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights while also potentially violating EU competition law", the global professional footballers union FIFPRO said in a statement.&nbsp;

With the support of FIFPRO, UNFP and PFA have asked the Brussels Commercial Court to refer the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union by putting forward "four questions for a preliminary ruling".

"Players and their unions have consistently highlighted the current football calendar as overloaded and unworkable", the unions said in their statement.

In early May, FIFPRO and the World Association of Football Leagues had already threatened FIFA with legal action.

The players' representatives accuse FIFA of having "continued a programme of competition expansion despite the opposition of player unions", in particular by expanding the Club World Cup from seven to 32 teams.

"The most in-demand players are now part of an endless schedule of games and competitions for club and country, with their limits constantly being pushed through expansion and the creation of new competitions," said PFA general manager Maheta Molango.

The two unions point to a possible violation by FIFA of the right of European workers to "collectively bargain over their terms and conditions of employment" and their right to "healthy friendly working conditions", as provided for in European law.&nbsp;

They also cite the ECJ's ruling in the Super League case last December as evidence that FIFA is restricting competition law in a "unilateral and discretionary" manner.

FIFA has not commented, but sources close to the governing body point out that the international match calendar was signed off by its ruling Council which features representation from all continental confederations, including UEFA.

They also insist that calendar was the result of extensive consultation, and reject any suggestion that it was imposed on the football community.

It was a night to remember for&nbsp;Indian football fans for all the wrong reasons on Tuesday (June 11) evening after their side lost 2-1 to Qatar in the FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifier. A do-or-die contest for the Blue Tigers was highlighted by a controversial “ghost goal” which ultimately sealed their fate for the 2026 World Cup. <h2>Qatar score ghost goal</h2>

Needing to win the match to progress to the next round, India were leading 1-0 until the 73rd minute in the backyard of the Asian champions when the controversial moment took place. Yousef Aymen's header in the 73rd minute was saved by goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh denying the Qataris an equaliser. During the play, Gurpreet’s ricochet with the Qatar attacker saw the ball go behind the line for a goal kick. Footage&nbsp;gathered from various angles from several cameras in the stadium saw the ball clearly cross the line for a goal kick.

However, the ball was picked up by Al Hassan and passed to Aymen who scored from a tap-in. India players including the goalkeeper thought a goal kick would be awarded and the goal would be ruled out. The referee instead went to his assistant and after a brief chat awarded the goal to Qatar which proved crucial to their comeback.

Since there was no Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the on-field referee’s decision stood and the goal was confirmed. Replays and several camera footage would later confirm that the ball had crossed the line and the goal should have been chalked off.

<h2>Consequences of controversial goal</h2>

Before the goal was scored, India were second in the Group A standings and were on the brink of progression to the third round of the FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. But a late winning goal for Qatar in the 85th for Qatar and another for Kuwait in their qualifier against Afghanistan sealed India’s fate. Kuwait won 1-0 while India lost 2-1 which meant India finished third and will now have to wait for the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for another shot.

All India Football Federation (AIFF) has written a letter to FIFA and&nbsp;AFC (Asian Football Confederation), urging for investigation and sporting compensation after India lost out on a place in the third round of World Cup Qualifiers due to a controversial 'ghost goal' in the match against Qatar.&nbsp;

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey said although the result had been accepted 'gracefully',&nbsp;one of the two goals scored against India left a few questions unanswered.

"After the game against Qatar, in consultation with our Chief Refereeing Officer, [we] decided to write to the FIFA Head of Qualifiers, the AFC Head of Referees, the AFC Head of Competitions, and the Match Commissioner for the game, requesting them to look into the grave supervision error caused during the game that practically cost us a place in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Round 3," Chaubey stated.&nbsp;

Given the severity of the issue that may peg back Indian football by a few years, Chaubey urged the concerned officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

"Furthermore, we have urged them to explore the possibilities of sporting compensation to address the injustice. Ensuring the integrity of the game is paramount, we truly trust that the FIFA and the AFC will take necessary steps in this regard," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>FIFA extends support to female players and coaches</h2>

“FIFA is committed to implementing a dynamic regulatory framework that is sound and suitable for the increasing needs of female players and coaches,” said FIFA Chief Legal &amp; Compliance Officer Emilio García Silvero.

“In order for the game to further flourish, it’s absolutely key that we have a holistic approach towards player well-being, including the legal aspects," said&nbsp;Silvero.

They will also recognise the physical, psychological and social dimensions in the event of an inability to provide employment services due to severe menstruation, or medical complications relating to pregnancy, and member associations will be encouraged to allow female players to have contact with their families while on international duty.

FIFA has been in conversation with stakeholders and a previous set of landmark reforms was moved to further protect and safeguard the interest of women players and coaches.&nbsp;These changes will reflect from June 1 with a change in the RSTP. According to FIFA Chief Football Women’s Officer Dame Sarai Bareman, players are now the real stakeholders. Another opinion from former US coach Ellis&nbsp;saw the decision being a move to encourage more family contact for national team players.

“I think it’s a big statement,” said Jill Ellis, who led FIFA’s Technical Study Group at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 and coached the USA to Women’s World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019. “These are big steps and big strides to really normalise the life that we go through as women … that’s what we want to provide now at every level, the club level, the national team level – the opportunity for pro players to have the chance to be mums.”

These changes will reflect from June 1 with a change in the RSTP. According to FIFA Chief Football Women’s Officer Dame Sarai Bareman, players are now the real stakeholders. Another opinion from former US coach Ellis saw the decision being a move to encourage more family contact for national team players. “I think it’s a big statement,” said Jill Ellis, who led FIFA’s Technical Study Group at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 and coached the USA to Women’s World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019. “These are big steps and big strides to really normalise the life that we go through as women … that’s what we want to provide now at every level, the club level, the national team level – the opportunity for pro players to have the chance to be mums.” (Inputs from Agencies)

Outgoing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has taken potshots at the broadcasters, FIFA and other footballing stakeholders in a recent 'bombshell' media address. Quizzed if he would consider a role in football administration post his Liverpool departure, possibly&nbsp;as the FIFA president, Klopp said he wouldn't survive in the 'sea&nbsp;of sharks'.&nbsp;

Klopp was addressing the media ahead of his side's high-octane Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday (May 5). The German manager was at his most animated self and expressed concerns about how the game was being run.&nbsp;

“I got an award yesterday from the PFA, I don’t know exactly for what, but I think for speaking up for players. I never thought about it but they will need people in a normal age knowing the business," said Klopp.&nbsp;

"But imagine me becoming FIFA president? It is obviously a well-paid job – that is why they all want to do it; not the official part obviously, but you can make a living from it. I don’t think I will spend my lifetime on these kind of things. Alone you can’t change anything. I probably wouldn’t survive in that sea of sharks," he added.&nbsp;

Klopp said the fixture congestion due to the broadcaster's greed was the primary reason for the big English&nbsp;teams crashing out of the European competitions.&nbsp;

“I had a discussion the other day with colleagues from my favourite TV channel which I will definitely never watch again, TNT. They always say: ‘They pay you. They give money for football.’ It’s the other way around. Football pays them," said a seething Klopp.&nbsp;

Klopp also questioned the astronomical number of 12:30 pm kickoffs that Liverpool had been allotted in the past couple of seasons. Football clubs worldwide spent a record $9.63 billion (8.88 billion Euros) on international transfers last year, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by more than $2 billion, according to a FIFA report published Tuesday.

The latest figures represent a 48.1 per cent increase compared to 2022 when transfer spending began to climb again after two years of belt-tightening due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The top 10 player transfers in 2023 accounted for over 10% of the entire outlay. Those deals included Jude Bellingham's move to Real Madrid, Enzo Fernandez joining Chelsea and Harry Kane signing for Bayern Munich.

English clubs, led by Chelsea, again topped the list by splashing out a combined $2.96 billion -- three times as much as those in France, which placed second on the list.

Disgraced former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales will be banned from the game for three years, world football governing body FIFA confirmed Friday after rejecting his appeal.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called for an automatic forfeit of games for the teams whose fans indulge in racism acts during the play in various leagues such as Italian Serie A, English Premier League (EPL) and Spanish La Liga. He shared the thoughts after two separate incidents of racisms on Saturday (January 20) which included Serie A and English Football League (EFL) or the Championship.

“As well as the three-step process (match stopped, match re-stopped, match abandoned), we have to implement an automatic forfeit for the team whose fans have committed racism and caused the match to be abandoned, as well as worldwide stadium bans and criminal charges for racists,” said Infantino via a FIFA post on X.

“FIFA and football shows full solidarity to victims of racism and any form of discrimination. Once and for all: No to racism! No to any form of discrimination! The events that took place in Udine and Sheffield on Saturday are totally abhorrent and completely unacceptable. The players affected by Saturday’s events have my undivided support. We need ALL the relevant stakeholders to take action, starting with education in schools so that future generations understand that this is not part of football or society,” he added.

In Serie A, AC Milan players walked off the pitch for a brief period of time after their French goalkeeper Mike Maignan alleged that Udinese fans made monkey noises in stands. FIFA provided $2.79 billion to its member associations and confederations for investment in soccer development over the first two cycles of its Forward Development Programme, the world governing body said in a report on Friday.

Two iterations of the programme - a three-year and four-year cycle - have been completed since it was launched in May 2016, with FIFA committing money to a diverse array of local projects.

"With the third cycle of the FIFA Forward Development Programme now underway, we have the perfect opportunity to reflect on the programme's achievements since its launch in 2016," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.

"From the very start, we pledged that revenues generated by football would be used for the benefit of our sport all around the world; for girls and boys, for women and men, and we have been as good as our word," he added.

In the period up to and including 2022, around 80% of the funds - $2.24 billion - went to FIFA's 211 member associations, with the remainder going to the confederations and regional associations, the report said.

The associations spent the funds on building new, or maintaining existing, infrastructure, developing domestic competitions and covering running costs related to administration and governance.

FIFA added that over 1,600 projects with a "long-term impact on football" had been approved between 2016 and 2022, with almost a third relating to football infrastructure including technical centres and stadiums.

FIFA said member association will receive up to $8 million to support their development activities during the third edition of the programme, which began its four-year cycle in January.

There were sensational developments in European football on Thursday (Dec 21) after the European Court of Justice's ruling against UEFA and FIFA about the European Super League (ESL) formation. The decision left both FIFA (World Football Governing Body) and UEFA (European Football Governing Body) in a spot of bother after they had blocked the formation of the ESL in 2021. According to the European Court of Justice's ruling, the decision by FIFA and UEFA was unlawful. However, both the apex bodies have now defended their stands taken in 2021 as the tussle between the ESL and top football bodies intensifies.

Also commenting on the issue was, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin as he vowed to continue his fight against the ESL project. UEFA was the first body to oppose the project in 2021 when 12 teams came together to form the league. However, the ESL has received backlash from fans and teams while fines were also imposed by UEFA.

"Supporters are of vital importance to the game and they have time and again made clear their opposition to a 'breakaway' competition that severs the link between domestic and European football.

"The Premier League reiterates its commitment to the clear principles of open competition that underpin the success of domestic and international club competitions,” concluded a statement from the Premier League.

FIFA, UEFA chief react after top court's ruling in favour of European Super League

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) on Thursday (Dec 21) delivered its verdict on the blocking of the European Super League terming the act as ‘unlawful’. According to the European Court of Justice, blocking the formation of the new competition was against European Union (EU) law. The decision comes as a huge blow to international football governing body FIFA and European football governing body UEFA, who had blocked the formation of the league back in 2021.

The statement detailed - when it comes to potential new competitions both FIFA and UEFA must ensure their powers are "transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate".

<h2>ECJ’s statement</h2>

"However, the powers of Fifa and Uefa are not subject to any such criteria. Fifa and Uefa are, therefore, abusing a dominant position,” a statement released by the ECJ stated.

"Moreover, given their arbitrary nature, their rules on approval, control and sanctions must be held to be unjustified restrictions on the freedom to provide services.

"That does not mean that a competition such as the Super League project must necessarily be approved. The Court does not rule on that specific project in its judgment,” the statement further added.

<h2>What is the European Super League?</h2>

In April 2021, a top cluster of continental clubs came together to form the European Super League (ESL) which included the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona along with the ‘big six’ Premier League sides. The cluster also included the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan before the plan was scrapped amid big fan protests. Upon criticism, 10 of the 12 clubs pulled out of the European Super League while UEFA decided to levy hefty fines on them. Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona though did not back out and are still part of the plan.

While Thursday proved to be the decisive day for ESL, several players and managers have opposed the idea of the formation of such a league. Current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is against the idea of such a league as it affects the integrity of players and fans. On the player part, Champions League winner Bernardo Silva has also criticised the formation of the ESL stating winning the Champions League was his biggest dream rather than playing in a league consisting of only top teams.

FIFA considered more severe sanctions than the three-year ban it imposed on former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales, world soccer's governing body said on Wednesday when it published the written reasons for its decision. Rubiales was&nbsp;banned&nbsp;for three years from all football-related activities on Oct. 30 after kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips, allegedly without consent, following Spain's Women's World Cup final win over England in August.

Rubiales was also seen grabbing his crotch in the VIP area after the final, next to the Spain's Queen Letizia and her 16-year-old daughter. "The Committee wished to stress that it was tempted to impose more severe sanctions in view of the seriousness and gravity of the incidents at stake as well as of the profound negative impact that the Respondent's actions had on the image of FIFA, women's football and women's sport in general," FIFA said.

It went on to say that with "strong hesitations" the Disciplinary Committee was satisfied that a three-year ban would serve the necessary deterrent effect. When FIFA announced the sentence in October, Rubiales said he would appeal and accused FIFA of not giving him the chance to defend himself. "I will go to the last resort to see that justice is done and that the truth shines through," he said in a statement via social media.

The Committee said that it could not ignore the impact of Rubiales' actions on Hermoso's mental health and her career, and also stated that Rubiales used his position to publish statements using quotes not written or authorised by the player. The Committee emphasised that such a kiss, from the president of an association towards a player (of the opposite sex) of one of the national teams under his leadership and responsibility was completely unacceptable.

It stated that they were satisfied that there was no agreement between them on a potential kiss and that the player's behaviour prior to the kiss did not in any way imply that she may want or consent to be kissed. The summary said that on several occasions, Rubiales violated the basic rules of decent conduct, used offensive gestures or behaved in a way that brought football into disrepute.

The report also included a submission by Debbie Hewitt, Chair of the Football Association, who said that during the medal ceremony Rubiales cupped and stroked the face of England player Laura Coombs and seemingly forcefully kissed Lucy Bronze on the face. Rubiales responded to the statement saying that Coombs had been injured and was wearing a bandage on her head which is why he tried to comfort her and that Bronze was Super Cup champion in Spain and Rubiales had participated in the celebration. FIFA said any party intending to appeal must announce its intention to do so in writing within three days of notification of the grounds of the decision.

Criminal proceedings against FIFA President Gianni Infantino over his dealings with former Swiss attorney general Michael Lauber have been closed, Swiss prosecutors said on Thursday (October 26), a decision Infantino hailed as a vindication of "the new FIFA". Infantino was elected in 2016 to clean up world soccer body FIFA after it became embroiled in corruption scandals.

However, Swiss authorities launched proceedings against Infantino himself in 2020 on suspicions of secrecy violations, abuse of office and aiding and abetting related to meetings he held with Lauber.

In ending the proceedings, prosecutors said their investigations had "invalidated" such suspicions. Swiss-Italian Infantino, who had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, said the decision was a "a full and clear victory for me, for the new FIFA and for justice."

"Indeed and with no surprise, the investigation fully and clearly confirms that I have always acted in a lawful and correct way, always defending exclusively the interests of FIFA and football," Infantino said.

Swiss authorities had been investigating contacts between Infantino and Lauber, who resigned as Swiss attorney general after a court concluded he covered up a meeting with the FIFA boss and lied to supervisors while his office investigated corruption at the football body.

The prosecutors said that their investigation had turned up no evidence that Infantino had "instrumentalised" the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland "into unusual, inexplicable, erroneous or even criminal acts or omissions".

FIFA said they had noted the decision to close the proceedings "with extreme satisfaction".

Saudi Arabia is prepared to host the 2034 World Cup in summer or winter, its football chief told AFP, as the conservative oil giant was anointed the tournament's host just weeks after announcing a bid. The quickfire crowning of the alcohol-free desert monarchy, which first allowed non-religious foreign tourists in 2019, comes less than a year after neighbouring Qatar held the first winter World Cup, and the first in the Middle East.

Despite summer temperatures touching 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) in the major cities, Saudi Arabian Football Federation president Yasser al-Misehal did not rule out playing the tournament in the hottest months. "Of course, we are ready for all possibilities," Misehal said late on Tuesday at the Asian Football Confederation awards in Doha, when asked about the tournament's timing.

"Today there are many new technologies that help you with cooling or adding air conditioners in stadiums, in addition to the fact that there are many cities in the kingdom that enjoy a very wonderful atmosphere in the summer," he said. Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter which is undergoing dizzying economic reforms, threw its hat in the ring on October 4, just 27 days before a truncated bidding process for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups ended on Tuesday.&nbsp;

With the 2026 tournament set for the US, Canada and Mexico, and 2030 destined for Spain, Morocco and Portugal with South American involvement, only candidates from the Asian and Oceanian confederations were eligible for 2034, due to FIFA's continental rotation policy.

After Australia, the only other potential bidder, dropped out on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia was the sole candidate. Its successful bid was confirmed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Instagram.

<h2>Human rights&nbsp;</h2>

The World Cup is just the latest in a string of Saudi sporting acquisitions under its 38-year-old de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including Formula One, heavyweight boxing, Newcastle United and LIV Golf.Saudi clubs backed by the Public Investment Fund sovereign wealth vehicle have signed off hundreds of millions of dollars on star footballers this year, hiring the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema in an unprecedented binge.

However, serious human rights concerns continue to plague Saudi Arabia, including the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, laws against homosexuality, gender inequality, freedom of speech and frequent use of the death penalty. Awarding the World Cup to Saudi Arabia "despite its appalling human rights record and closed door to any monitoring exposes FIFA's commitments to human rights as a sham", said Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch.

However, SAFF said hosting the tournament is an "honour and privilege", in a statement posted on social media late on Tuesday. "Driven by a huge passion for the game by our young nation, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation is fully committed to meeting and exceeding the bid's requirements," it said.

<h2>Going it alone&nbsp;</h2>

Misehal also indicated that Saudi Arabia intends to push ahead and host the tournament alone, without asking its neighbours to hold any games. That would make Saudi the first country to organise the newly expanded, 48-team World Cup on its own, after the joint hostings in 2026 and 2030.

"Saudi Arabia will submit a separate bid," Misehal said, when asked if another country would hold any matches. Summers in the desert kingdom can touch 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit), temperatures that would be considered dangerous for football and likely too hot for fans to be outside.

Some cities enjoy temperate weather in the summer, including Abha, Taif and Al-Baha, which hosted the Arab Club Champions Cup in July and August.&nbsp;However, none of those cities has international-level stadiums, and the bigger Saudi venues are clustered in the major cities of Riyadh and Jeddah.

Despite questions over the bidding process and human rights, residents of the capital Riyadh hailed the news that Saudi Arabia will host the World Cup. "Saudi Arabia hosting World Cup 2034 is great news and it didn't come from nowhere," said 62-year-old Saud al-Oreifi, pointing to the country's growing portfolio of sports events.

"It came as a result of efforts and successes achieved in the past." Kuwaiti visitor Thamer al-Choiebi was similarly enthusiastic, saying: "I am proud in front of the whole world that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia will honour not only the Saudis but the whole Arab region."

Saudi Arabia set for transition after rapid bid, offer winter and summer options for 2034 FIFA World Cup

Jack Warner, a former FIFA vice-president banned for life by the governing body, was ordered to repay more than $220,000 to a businessman by the Trinidadian justice system on Monday. "The Board... orders the defendants (Warner and two associates) to repay to the claimant the sum of TT$1,505,493 ($222,000) together with interest on that amount... from 2018 until repayment," according to decision of the Privy Council of Trinidad and Tobago.

In 2007, Trinidadian businessman Krishna Lalla loaned TT$1.5 million to Warner for his Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, a football academy named in honour of the Brazilian former president of FIFA and located in Trinidad. Warner promised to repay the amount using a TT$10 million subvention that he expected to receive from FIFA, according to Lalla's testimony.

The property in question was inaugurated in 1999 and contains pitches, function rooms, a hotel, conference centre, swimming pool and gym. Warner's lawyers said that it was a gift intended to fund the electoral campaign of the United National Congress, a political party for whom Warner was an MP (2007-2015) and Minister of National Security (2010-2013).

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), formerly presided over by Warner, has sued the latter, claiming to be the rightful owner of the property. Warner was banned for life from football by FIFA following the corruption scandal which embroiled the game's world governing body in 2015.

Earlier that year, the Trinidadian was indicted on corruption charges by US authorities, who requested his extradition. As a member of FIFA's executive committee, Warner voted in favour of attributing the hosting rights of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

FIFA led its own investigation into the bidding processes for these two tournaments, prior to ruling in favour of banning Warner who quit the federation in 2011.
