Qatar has emptied apartment blocks housing thousands of foreign workers in the same areas in the centre of the capital Doha where visiting soccer fans will stay during the World Cup, workers who were evicted from their homes told Reuters.

They said more than a dozen buildings had been evacuated and shut down by authorities, forcing the mainly Asian and African workers to seek what shelter they could - including bedding down on the pavement outside one of their former homes.

The move comes less than four weeks before the Nov. 20 start of the global soccer tournament which has drawn intense international scrutiny of Qatar's treatment of foreign workers and its restrictive social laws.

At one building which residents said housed 1,200 people in Doha's Al Mansoura district, authorities told people at about 8 pm on Wednesday they had just two hours to leave.

Municipal officials returned around 10.30 pm, forced everyone out and locked the doors to the building, they said. Some men had not been able to return in time to collect their belongings.

"We don't have anywhere to go," one man told Reuters the next day as he prepared to sleep out for a second night with around 10 other men, some of them shirtless in the autumn heat and humidity of the Gulf Arab state.

He, and most other workers who spoke to Reuters, declined to give their names or personal details for fear of reprisals from the authorities or employers.

Nearby, five men were loading a mattress and a small fridge into the back of a pickup truck. They said they had found a room in Sumaysimah, about 40 km (25 miles) north of Doha.

A Qatari government official said the evictions are unrelated to the World Cup and were designed "in line with ongoing comprehensive and long-term plans to re-organise areas of Doha."

"All have since been rehoused in safe and appropriate accommodation," the official said, adding that requests to vacate "would have been conducted with proper notice."

World soccer's governing body FIFA did not respond to a request for comment and Qatar's World Cup organisers directed inquiries to the government.

Around 85% of Qatar's three million population are foreign workers. Many of those evicted work as drivers, day labourers or have contracts with companies but are responsible for their own accommodation - unlike those working for major construction firms who live in camps housing tens of thousands of people.

One worker said the evictions targeted single men, while foreign workers with families were unaffected.

A Reuters reporter saw more than a dozen buildings where residents said people had been evicted. Some buildings had their electricity switched off.

Most were in neighbourhoods where the government has rented buildings for World Cup fan accommodation. The organisers' website lists buildings in Al Mansoura and other districts where flats are advertised for between $240 and $426 per night.

The Qatari official said municipal authorities have been enforcing a 2010 Qatari law which prohibits "workers' camps within family residential areas" - a designation encompassing most of central Doha - and gives them the power to move people out.

Some of the evicted workers said they hoped to find places to live amid purpose-built workers' accommodation in and around the industrial zone on Doha's southwestern outskirts or in outlying cities, a long commute from their jobs.

The evictions "keep Qatar's glitzy and wealthy facade in place without publicly acknowledging the cheap labour that makes it possible," said Vani Saraswathi, Director of Projects at Migrant-Rights.org, which campaigns for foreign workers in the Middle East.

"This is deliberate ghetto-isation at the best of times. But evictions with barely any notice are inhumane beyond comprehension."

Some workers said they had experienced serial evictions. One said he was forced to change buildings in Al Mansoura at the end of September, only to be moved on 11 days later with no prior notice, along with some 400 others. "In one minute, we had to move," he said.

Mohammed, a driver from Bangladesh, said he had lived in the same neighbourhood for 14 years until Wednesday, when the municipality told him he had 48 hours to leave the villa he shared with 38 other people.

He said labourers who built up the infrastructure for Qatar to host the World Cup were being pushed aside as the tournament approaches.

"Who made the stadiums? Who made the roads? Who made everything? Bengalis, Pakistanis. People like us. Now they are making us all go outside."

The health ministry also dropped a requirement that adults show their COVID-19 status on a government-run contact tracing smartphone application called Ehteraz before entering stadiums or other establishments like shops and restaurants.

Visitors and residents must still show the application before entering a healthcare facility, the statement said.

Qatar is easing restrictions because "the number of COVID-19 cases (is) continuing to drop around the world and in Qatar, and the ongoing roll-out of Qatar's National COVID-19 Vaccination Program," the statement said.

Security forces in Qatar arbitrarily arrested and abused LGBT Qataris as recently as last month, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Monday, in the run-up to hosting soccer's World Cup which has put a spotlight on human rights issues in the Gulf Arab state.

Homosexuality is illegal in the conservative Muslim country, and some soccer stars have raised concerns over the rights of fans travelling for the event, especially LGBT+ individuals and women, whom rights groups say Qatari laws discriminate against.

A Qatari official said in a statement that HRW's allegations "contain information that is categorically and unequivocally false," without specifying.

Organisers of the World Cup, which starts on Nov. 20 and is the first held in a Middle Eastern nation, say that everyone, no matter their sexual orientation or background, is welcome, while also warning against public displays of affection.

"Freedom of expression and nondiscrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity should be guaranteed, permanently, for all residents of Qatar, not just spectators going to Qatar for the World Cup," HRW said in a statement.

The organisation said it had interviewed six LGBT Qataris, including four transgender women, one bisexual woman and one gay man, who reported being detained between 2019 and 2022 and subjected to verbal and physical abuse, including kicking and punching.

They were detained without charge in an underground prison in Doha, HRW said, and one individual was held for two months in solitary confinement.

"All six said that police forced them to sign pledges indicating that they would 'cease immoral activity'," it said, adding that transgender women detainees were mandated to attend conversion therapy sessions at a government-sponsored clinic.

Qatar does not "license or operate 'conversion centres'," the Qatari official said.

One of the transgender Qatari women interviewed by HRW told Reuters on condition of anonymity that she was arrested several times, most recently this summer when she was held for several weeks.

For the football World Cup 2022, Denmark's kit supplier Hummel made a statement with the designs of the jerseys and protested against the hosts Qatar for the alleged human rights record.&nbsp;

Hummel said on Wednesday (September 28) that it will hide its logo on the jerseys to be worn at the upcoming showpiece event as they "don't wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives".&nbsp;

FIFA World Cup 2022 is set to start in Qatar on 20 November and the final match of the event is scheduled to be held on December 18, which also is Qatar National Day.&nbsp;

Notably, FIFA's World Cup rules prohibit political statements on the jerseys of the team.&nbsp;

In a statement, Hummel said, "With the Danish national team’s new jerseys, we wanted to send a dual message. They are not only inspired by Euro 92, paying tribute to Denmark’s greatest football success, but also a protest against Qatar and its human rights record."&nbsp;

"That’s why we've toned down all the details for Denmark's new World Cup jerseys, including our logo and iconic chevrons. We don't wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives."&nbsp;

"We support the Danish national team all the way, but that isn't the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation. We believe that sport should bring people together. And when it doesn't, we want to make a statement," the statement added.&nbsp;

Welsh actor Michael Sheen's oration skills were lauded by many once again as he gave a stirring speech to the Wales football team ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 later this year. Sheen, who has been a football fan all his life, showcased his passion for the country with some inspiring lines for the Wales players.

Sheen met the Wales players in their dressing room during a visit to their training facility earlier this week. He was presented a Wales shirt before he told the players he won't able to come to see them play in Qatar in the World Cup later this year. However, the actor said he would give them something which they can take with them to the World Cup.

"I couldn't come and see you and not give you something to go with. I'll try and customise what I did before and give you something to take with you," said Sheen before composing himself to produce one of the best dressing room speeches in the game.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 is set to get underway in Qatar in November this year but Google seems to have already predicted the two finalists of the tournament. In a weird mistake, the Google search engine showed Brazil and France as the two finalists of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar on Monday (September 26).

The World Cup final is set to be hosted by the Lusail Stadium in Qatar which is one of the biggest stadiums in the country. The Lusail Stadium is set to host a total of ten matches in the FIFA World Cup 2022, including one semi-final tie and the all-important final on December 18.

For a brief period on Monday, a search query of - 'Lusail Stadium events' showed Brazil vs France listed as the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on December 18. While it remains unclear if it was a technical error on part of the search engine, the mistake was rectified within a few hours.

Qatar will suspend entry of visitors in the country from November 01 till December 23 to ensure the best possible stay for football fans visiting the country for the FIFA World Cup. FIFA World Cup final stadium passes assessment with first sell-out crowd ahead of high-profile competition

Fans will be able to raise a drink while celebrating the goals and victories of their favourite teams during the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar this year. Qatar has decided to allow beer sales during the tournament despite the strict restrictions on alcohol in the Muslim nation. However, there will still be limitations on alcohol sales during the showpiece event.

As per a report in Reuters, ticketed fans will be allowed to buy beer at the tournament three hours before kick-off and an hour after the full-time whistle. Beer will be sold within the ticketed perimeter surrounding the stadiums in Qatar, however, no alcohol will be served in the stands inside the stadiums.

Alcohol is not entirely banned in Qatar but as per the local law, access to alcoholic beverages is limited to only non-muslims in the country at present. Only a handful of bars and restaurants across the nation are permitted to serve alcoholic drinks, which are strictly banned for Qatari Muslims.

Qatar is set to be the first Muslim nation to host the FIFA World Cup and the organisers are expected to face major challenges when it comes to serving alcohol to the travelling fans from across the globe. Budweiser, the alcoholic beverage brand, is one of the major sponsors of the Qatar World Cup and it will hold the exclusive rights to sell beer at the tournament this year.

While beer will be sold around the ticketing perimeter at the stadiums, it will also be available at the FIFA fan zone in Doha. As per Reuters, fans will be able to buy beer at the fan zone from 6:30 pm to 1:00 am every day during the 29-day event.&nbsp;

"Beer will be available when gates open, which is three hours before kick-off. Whoever wants to have a beer will be able to. &nbsp;And then when they leave the stadium as well for one hour after the final whistle," a source was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Over 6-7 years, these players had the quality and then all of a sudden you have to build a new team with 5-6 younger players. Don't expect that they are standing and are responsible on the field. That needs time. This period between 2016-2020 that was the case with Holland. Now you have fantastic young players who are already playing on the higher level so I think now things have changed. But you don't see that only with Holland but a lot of other teams," he explained.

The highly anticipated finals draw for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is all set to take place at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center in Qatar on April 1.

As per the Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions protocols, 28 pre-qualified teams will be allocated from pots 1 to 4 based on the FIFA Men's World Ranking released on March 31.

As hosts, Qatar will take position A1 from Pot 1, where they will be joined by the seven highest-ranked qualified teams from the FIFA Men's World Ranking.

The countries occupying positions 8-15 in the ranking of the qualified teams will be allocated to Pot 2, while the 16th-23rd best-ranked qualifiers will be placed in Pot 3.
