The UK government on Wednesday (May 25) approved Chelsea football club's sale to Todd Boehly-led consortium in a deal worth 4.25 billion pounds (around 5.2 billion USD). The approval of the club's sale marks an end to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's 19-year-long ownership of the Blues. Abramovich had bought Chelsea in the year 2003 when the club had not won a single league title since the 1955/56 season. The Russian went on to transform Chelsea into one of the best football clubs in the world and inspired them to incredible success during his era.

Abramovich had put Chelsea up for sale just two weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The invasion saw the UK government sanction Russian billionaires operating in the country, including Abramovich. The deal was approved on Wednesday after months of negotiations with the UK government ensuring that the proceeds from the sale will be frozen in a UK bank account.

The UK government also received legal guarantees that the sale will not benefit Abramovich, whose assets in the UK have already been frozen in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. While the ending of his reign at Chelsea is certainly not what Abramovich would have expected, he made the club a force to reckon with under his ownership.

Under Abramovich's ownership, Chelsea won as many as 21 major trophies, including an impressive five Premier League and 2 Champions League titles. Their latest Champions League triumph came under current manager Thomas Tuchel in the 2020-21 season.

'I'm not finished': Cristiano Ronaldo sends message to Man Utd fans after 3-0 win over Brentford - WATCH

Defender Raphael Varane scored his first Premier League goal as Manchester United returned to winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Brentford on a night of potential farewells at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo, the latter with a penalty, also netted on Monday, which is the last home fixture of a difficult campaign for United.

Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic were given starts by departing coach Ralf Rangnick in what is likely their final season with the club, while Edinson Cavani, who is also expected to leave, came off the bench. United remain in sixth place with 58 points from 36 games, five behind fourth-placed Arsenal but having played two more matches.

Brentford have 40 points from 35 games and may need one more win to ensure they are not dragged into a relegation fight. There had been talks fans walking out of the stadium in the 73rd minute in protest of the Glazer family having owned the club for 17 years.

But there was no mass exit as the vast majority stayed to watch what was a rare commanding performance by United in recent months. "The last game of the season at home, we wanted a good result and a good performance," United captain Fernandes told SkySports after scoring his 50th goal for the club.

United had won only one of their previous seven games in all competitions and seen their hopes of playing Champions League football next season fade. On Monday, however, they played with confidence and no shortage of quality from the first outset.

They opened the scoring on nine minutes with a well-worked goal as Diogo Dalot fed Anthony Elanga with a superb pass on the right and the latter`s cross was met on the volley by Fernandes. Ronaldo won a clear penalty on the hour-mark when he was barged over in the box by Rico Henry and stepped up to convert a clinical spot-kick to settle any lingering home nerves.

Varane then scored his first goal for United as he volleyed home from an Alex Telles corner.

Fernandes, Ronaldo score as Manchester United beat Bretford 3-0 in English Premier League

Manchester United`s Cristiano Ronaldo showed his continued class in front of goal by cancelling out Marcos Alonso`s opener for a dominant Chelsea side in their 1-1 Premier League draw at Old Trafford on Thursday. It was another night of mediocrity from Ralf Rangnick`s United as their troubled season, which began with such high expectations, peters out.

The result leaves Chelsea in third place on 66 points while United are in sixth spot with 55, five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal having played two games more. The only moment of class, to bring some cheer to the United supporters who had again vented their frustrations against the club`s American owners, the Glazer family, came from Ronaldo with a superb piece of control and finishing.

Little has worked for United this season, either under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or German Rangnick, who took over from the Norwegian in November, but Portugal`s five-time Ballon d`Or winner has certainly delivered in front of goal.

Ronaldo`s 62nd-minute strike was his 17th league goal this season with only Mohamed Salah of Liverpool having found the target more often and the former Real Madrid man has claimed eight of his team`s last nine goals.

"Not only the goal Cristiano scored but his whole performance, his attitude at the age of 37, this is not normal to do that," said Rangnick.

"If he plays like he did today he can still be a big help to this team," he added.

"It was a good point for us. In the first half Chelsea dominated the game. You can see that they have top players and are well organised, and it`s not so easy to get hold of them," added the interim manager who will be replaced by Ajax Amsterdam boss Erik ten Hag at the end of the season.

After Chelsea failed to make the most of a series of chances in the first half, with United goalkeeper David De Gea three times denying Kai Havertz, they finally got ahead on the hour. Manchester United`s Cristiano Ronaldo showed his continued class in front of goal by cancelling out Marcos Alonso`s opener for a dominant Chelsea side in their 1-1 Premier League draw at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire receives bomb threat amid Red Devils' struggles

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his gratitude and acknowledged the Liverpool fans for their show of compassion towards the Manchester United's striker following the passing away of his newborn son. Ahead of the Red Devils' English Premier League (EPL) face-off versus Liverpool, Ronaldo had taken to his social media handles to share the devastating news of the death of his newborn son.

Thus, the 37-year-old Portuguese captain opted out of Man United's encounter versus Liverpool, on Tuesday night, at Anfield. Despite his absence from the marquee face-off, Ronaldo was remembered by Liverpool and Man United's supporters. The Liverpool fans were singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" while the Red Devils' supporters applauded the moment during the initial phase of the match. Ronaldo was also given a standing ovation in the seventh minute of the game whereas both sets of players wore black armbands to pay respect to the superstar footballer's tragic loss.

Seeing the outpouring of love and compassion, Ronaldo took to his official Instagram handle and lauded the Liverpool and Man United fans. He captioned the post, “One world One sport One global family Thanks, Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion.”

The Portuguese international is all set to miss the game against Liverpool and will not be on the field to acknowledge the gesture from the two sets of fans as he remains with his family in the difficult phase. United revealed the idea was originally suggested by the Liverpool fans and that despite sharing an intense rivalry on the field the two clubs have a deep-rooted respect for each other which will be highlighted by the great gesture. "A fan-led minute’s applause will be held in the seventh minute of the game in a tribute to the Portuguese striker and his partner Georgina, after they announced the loss of their new-born baby boy on Monday," said Manchester United in a statement. "Messages of support from across the football world are continually flooding in on social media and everybody’s thoughts are with the Ronaldo family right now. While United and Liverpool share English football's greatest rivalry, there is a deep-rooted respect held between the two clubs and that will be highlighted by the minute’s applause, which was initially suggested by fans of the Merseyside team," the club added. It will be a crucial clash for both Liverpool and Manchester United at the Anfield. While the hosts will be looking to go past leaders Manchester City with a win, United will be aiming to stay put in the race for top four with a crucial three points.

Manchester United only need a couple of good transfer windows to get them playing to a similar standard as Liverpool, interim manager Ralf Rangnick said on Monday.

Liverpool have won the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup, Super Cup and Club World Cup over the last four seasons, a period during which United have failed to claim a single trophy.

Rangnick told reporters ahead of their game against Liverpool at Anfield later on Tuesday that the success of United`s rebuild would depend on deciding on a style of play and bringing in the players who can make it work.

"I don`t think that a club like Manchester United can afford to take three or four years in order to achieve that, and I don`t think it is necessary," he said.

"If you know what you are looking for it will take two or three transfer windows. If you don`t know what you`re looking for you`ll always be looking for the needle in the haystack.

"If you know what kind of football you want to play and what kind of profiles you want for each individual position, then it is about finding the players and convincing them to come. It`s not that complicated, it`s not rocket science."

In a conversation with Liverpool ECHO, Sarah said she had taken her 14-year-old son Jake to watch an Everton game for the first time in his life. The mother-son duo were sitting in the Park End close to the tunnel from where players from both teams walk through after the conclusion of the game.

Sarah revealed her son Jake was trying to capture all the United players as they walked by and had lowered his phone trying to capture Ronaldo's injury when his phone was smacked to the ground by the Manchester United star.

"At full-time the Man United players started walking off. We were in the Park End so we were right by the tunnel where they came walking past - my son was there videoing them all," Sarah told the Liverpool ECHO.

"He filmed all the United players walking through. And then he lowered his phone because Ronaldo had pulled down his sock and his leg was bleeding. He lowered his phone to see what it was - he didn’t even speak.

"Ronaldo then just walked past, with a terrible, terrible temper and smashed the phone out of my son’s hand and carried on walking," she added. She also shared pictures of her son's bruised hand and broken phone.

The incident has completely put Jake off going to the game again: Sarah

Sarah reveaed her son Jake suffers from dyspraxia and is autistic. She stated that the 14-year-old was completely shocked by Ronaldo's actions and doesn't want to go and watch another live football match after what transpired at the Goodison Park on Saturday. Sarah said Ronaldo is an idol of her son but slammed the Portuguese star for his behavious calling it 'assault' on her son.

"I was crying, I was shook up, Jacob was in complete shock - he’s autistic and he’s got dyspraxia as well, so he didn’t really digest what was happening until he’s come home now," Sarah said.

"He’s really upset about it and it’s completely put him off going to the game again. This is the first football game he’s been to and this has happened. End of Roman Abramovich era! Three bids submitted for Chelsea as deadline passes

The British government on Thursday announced sanctions on Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich while freezing his assets. Amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, several countries across the globe have imposed sanctions on the country while many sporting bodies have also banned Russian teams, athletes and staff from taking part in their tournaments.

Russia has been immense criticism from all corners as Ukraine continues to suffer in the ongoing war. Abramovich was among seven Russian billionaires sanctioned by the UK government in the wake of the Ukraine invasion. Abramovich, who is said to have close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, had taken over Chelsea in 2003 and has since made the club a force to reckon with in club football.

Chelsea have won five English Premier League titles and two Champions League titles since Abramovich took over the club, including a European triumph last year. However, the club's future is now uncertain after the UK government's sanctions on its Russian owner.

Can Chelsea continue playing?

The sanctions imposed on Abramovich could have forced Chelsea to stop running as a business and barred the club from continuing in any of the competitions that they are part of, including the English Premier League. However, the UK government has issued a special license to Chelsea to continue operations with several restrictions. So Chelsea will be allowed to play but they will be banned from several marketing activities including ticket sales, merchandise sales and players transfers among others.

The club will continue to receive broadcast money from their ongoing deals. However, the money will be frozen in the club's bank account and will be monitored by the UK government.

No player recruitment or contract renewal of existing players.
