<p>Only Twitter Blue subscribers will be allowed to use text messages as their two-factor authentication (2FA) method from March 20, the social media giant said on Saturday (February 18) in a blog. The announcement by the social network, however, has not been received well by many users. Under Elon Musk's leadership, the social media firm has seen multiple changes ever since he took over as the chief executive in October and many of these decisions have been criticised. This is the latest move, which seems to have generated a pushback.</p>

<p>In its blog, Twitter said: "While historically a popular form of 2FA, unfortunately we have seen phone-number based 2FA be used - and abused - by bad actors. So starting today, we will no longer allow accounts to enroll in the text message/SMS method of 2FA unless they are Twitter Blue subscribers." Those who are not subscribed to the Twitter Blue feature will have 30 days to disable this method and enroll in another, it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After March 20, it stressed, "We will no longer permit non-Twitter Blue subscribers to use text messages as a 2FA method. At that time, accounts with text message 2FA still enabled will have it disabled." It has suggested such users to "consider using an authentication app or security key method instead". "These methods require you to have physical possession of the authentication method and are a great way to ensure your account is secure," the blog read.&nbsp;</p>

Move over AI-powered ChatGPT, Elon Musk expresses need for TruthGPT

Motown, in a move, could turn Tesla into universal filling station of EV era. Tesla will open part of its U.S. charging network to electric vehicles made by rivals. The deal is a part of $7.5 billion.

Tesla to share charging network, 3,500 chargers for non-Tesla customers

<p>In a move that could help turn Tesla into the universal "filling station" of the electric vehicle (EV) era, Tesla will open part of its US charging network to rivals. The deal is part of a $7.5 billion US program to expand EV use and cut carbon emissions. However, experts believe this will risk eroding a competitive edge for vehicles made by Tesla, which has exclusive access to the biggest network of high-speed superchargers in the United States.</p>

<p>By late 2024, Tesla would open 3,500 new and existing superchargers along highway corridors to non-Tesla customers. It would also offer 4,000 slower chargers at locations like hotels and restaurants.Tesla would be eligible for a subsidy - including retrofitting its existing fleet - if its chargers allow other vehicles with a Federally backed charging standard called CCS to charge.</p>

<p>The US administration said Tesla had not committed to adopting CCS as its standard but must comply with the requirements to qualify for Federal funds. Tesla currently has 17,711 superchargers, accounting for about 60 per cent of the total US fast chargers, which can add hundreds of miles of driving range in an hour or less.</p>

<p><b>A win-win?</b></p>

<p>The US government's initiative to access Tesla's network significantly boosts the administration's initiative to create 500,000 EV chargers by 2030, up from 130,000 currently. There are also nearly 10,000 "destination" chargers with Tesla plugs that can recharge a vehicle overnight.</p>

Will Tesla turn into the universal EV 'filling station'?

<p>In a surprising turn of events, Twitter boss Elon Musk on Wednesday said that a new CEO might soon be running the social networking service. Addressing the World Government Summit conference in Dubai virtually, Musk said that by the end of 2023, someone else might be at the helm at Twitter. His exact words as per AFP were, "I'm guessing probably towards the end of this year should be good timing to find someone else to run the company." Reportedly the billionaire has pegged the end of 2023 as the time for Twitter's new leadership. This, as per him, depends on him being able to "stabilise the organisation and make sure it's in a healthy place and that the product roadmap is clearly laid out."</p>

<p>The announcement comes a month after Musk first announced that he is planning to step down. However, since the December 21 announcement, he has for the most part remained silent on the topic.</p>

<p>As per AFP, the Tesla, SpaceX founder has given out a few hints about the kind of leader he is looking for. First and foremost, as per the remark he made in December, the person will have to be "someone foolish enough" to take&nbsp;his place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Wednesday (February 15), the chief twit also took to the micro-blogging platform to post the picture of the "new CEO of Twitter", who in his own words is "amazing". The picture is of a dog wearing a sweater that says 'CEO,' and as one user said "i guess he was the only one crazy enough to take the job".</p>

<p>Let's see who replaces Musk and when. Under the eccentric billionaire, the platform has undergone massive changes, most of which haven't been that well received. A leadership change might be exactly what is needed to save the platform, which has been "riven by chaos, with mass layoffs, the return of thousands of banned accounts and major advertisers fleeing."</p>

His exact words as per AFP were, "I'm guessing probably towards the end of this year should be good timing to find someone else to run the company." Reportedly the billionaire has pegged the end of 2023 as the time for Twitter's new leadership. This, as per him, depends on him being able to "stabilise the organisation and make sure it's in a healthy place and that the product roadmap is clearly laid out." The announcement comes a month after Musk first announced that he is planning to step down. However, since the December 21 announcement, he has for the most part remained silent on the topic. As per AFP, the Tesla, SpaceX founder has given out a few hints about the kind of leader he is looking for. First and foremost, as per the remark he made in December, the person will have to be "someone foolish enough" to take his place. On Wednesday (February 15), the chief twit also took to the micro-blogging platform to post the picture of the "new CEO of Twitter", who in his own words is "amazing". The picture is of a dog wearing a sweater that says 'CEO,' and as one user said "i guess he was the only one crazy enough to take the job". The new CEO of Twitter is amazing pic.twitter.com/yBqWFUDIQH — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 15, 2023 × Twitterati are having a field day over the meme, with some rooting for a cat CEO instead of a dog. @catturd2 would have been a better CEO. pic.twitter.com/PAty5kVsWJ — 3sidedstory 🇺🇲 (@3sidedstory) February 15, 2023 × Let's see who replaces Musk and when. Under the eccentric billionaire, the platform has undergone massive changes, most of which haven't been that well received. A leadership change might be exactly what is needed to save the platform, which has been "riven by chaos, with mass layoffs, the return of thousands of banned accounts and major advertisers fleeing." Elon Musk's tweets oddly intrude people's Twitter feed. Coincidence or tailored algorithm?

After his super bowl tweets failed to gain traction, Elon Musk made a large team of engineers at Twitter change the algorithm to boost his Tweets. Can big tech just hit the booster and create a special system for certain individuals? Tech and Business Journalist Adam Hancock joins us to discuss.

<p>Notably, "Legacy verified" accounts on Twitter are those that had been verified through the previous system. However, after Twitter's takeover by Musk, since November 2022, Twitter users with an active Twitter Blue subscription also display the blue "verified" checkmark.&nbsp;</p>

Elon Musk says ‘legacy’ blue checks to be removed soon from Twitter accounts

<p>Twitter CEO Elon Musk seems to be having sleepless nights for weeks now, as worries consume him about his declining reach on his micro-blogging site.</p>

<p>Musk, last week, changed his Twitter account's setting to private to see if that might boost the number of his audience.</p>

<p>The step was taken after many prominent right-wing accounts complained that their reach has reduced after the recent changes incorporated into Twitter.</p>

<p>As per a report published by The Verge, a group of advisors and engineers were asked to assemble in a room at the headquarters of Twitter to find answers to the question that has been bothering him lately - “Why are his engagement numbers tanking?”</p>

<p>The report claims in the meeting, Musk said, “This is ridiculous. I have more than 100 million followers, and I’m only getting tens of thousands of impressions.”</p>

<p>One of the principal engineers of the company said that the declining reach can be a result of waning public interest in Musk's antics.</p>

<p>The internal data of the account's engagement and a Google Trends chart were shared with Musk by the employees. Last April, Musk was told that he is at the “peak” of his popularity in search rankings, which was reflected in his score of “100.”</p>

<p>Today, Musk stands at a score of nine. Previously, engineers had investigated if the engagement of the account is being artificially restricted, however, no evidence was found that claimed that algorithm was biased against Musk.</p>

<p>The news did not go down well with Musk, who told the engineer, “You’re fired, you’re fired”.</p>

<p>As per a current worker, Musk has asked employees to track the number of times each of his tweets is recommended, the report stated.</p>

'You’re fired, you’re fired' | Musk sacks top engineer after his reach drops: report

<p>The United States administration said on Thursday (February 9) that it was investigating Elon Musk's Neuralink- a brain implant company over the potentially illegal movement of hazardous pathogens. A spokesperson from the Department of Transportation informed news agency Reuters about the investigation after the Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine (PCRM) wrote to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to alert it of records it obtained on the issue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The PCRM, which is an animal-welfare advocacy group, said it had obtained emails and other documents which suggested unsafe packaging and movement of implants removed from the brains of monkeys. The PCRM added that these implants may have carried infectious diseases in violation of federal law.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Thursday, the Department of Transportation spokesperson told Reuters that the above allegations levelled by the PCRM should be taken very seriously. "We are conducting an investigation to ensure that Neuralink is in full compliance with federal regulations and keeping their workers and the public safe from potentially dangerous pathogens," the spokesperson added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Neuralink is developing a brain implant which it hopes would help paralysed people walk again and cure other neurological ailments. The PCRM has raised concerns about this company of Elon Musk in the past. In December last year, Neuralink had been under a federal investigation over potential animal welfare violations, and some of its employees made internal complaints about experiments being rushed which caused needless suffering and deaths.</p>

<p>As per documents cited by the PCRM, incidents which involved potential breaches of hazardous material transportation regulations happened in 2019, when the company relied on the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) to help carry out its experiments on primates. Neuralink's partnership with UC Davis ended a year later (in 2020).</p>

<p>However, the PCRM said that Elon Musk's company continued to employ the neurosurgeon who oversaw experiments and other staff involved might also still be employed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A letter by PCRM said that pathogens were carried on removed from monkeys after improper sanitisation and packaging. It added these pathogens could cause serious health problems in human beings including severe brain damage and pneumonia. The PCRM did not identify any harm as a result of these above incidents but pointed out that Neuralink's actions might pose a serious and ongoing public health risk, Reuters reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The animal-welfare advocacy group further said that it found instances that appeared to describe UC Davis employees urging immediate biohazard training for Neuralink employees following incidents which caused contamination concerns. In one such case in 2019, an employee in the university wrote in an email that the university's primate centre was “at risk” for “monkey-contaminated hardware.”</p>

<p>Also in 2022, PCRM wrote to federal officials about the alleged animal-welfare issues during Neuralink's research partnership with the University of California, Davis, citing a set of records it obtained. Reuters had earlier reported that a prosecutor in the Northern District of California had referred the PCRM's complaint to the inspector general of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which later launched the federal investigation.&nbsp;</p>

Elon Musk found not guilty in 2018 Tesla ‘funding secured’ tweet case

Elon Musk tweeted in 2018 that he had secured funding to take his company, tesla, private. The stocks rose but when it was revealed that this was untrue, the stocks of Tesla fell rapidly. Shareholders of tesla argued that this caused billions of dollars in damages and that Musk's tweet constituted of fraud as he misled his shareholders, and tried to squeeze the investors. However, a San Francisco Jury found him not guilty of fraud after a three-week trial.

<p>Faced with the twin problems of a low birth rate and an ageing population, Japan has sounded the alarm. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Monday said that the twin problems pose an urgent risk to society and said that the issue "cannot wait and cannot be postponed." He also pledged to address the issue by establishing a new government agency.</p>

<h2><strong>What did the PM say?</strong></h2>

<p>Addressing lawmakers during a policy address marking the start of a new parliament session, Kishida said that according to estimates the number of births in the country dropped below 800,000 last year.</p>

<p>"Japan is standing on the verge of whether we can continue to function as a society," he warned, adding that "focusing attention on policies regarding children and child-rearing is an issue that cannot wait and cannot be postponed."</p>

<p>"We must build a child-first social economy to reverse the (low) birth rate," said Kishida.</p>

<h2><strong>How serious is the situation?</strong></h2>

<p>Japan has a population of around 125 million people, and in 2022, as the PM mentioned in his address, the population for the first time recorded only 80,000 births. Forecasts had predicted this would happen, but unfortunately, it happened eight years too soon.</p>

<p>For the last eleven years, the country has been breaking its yearly record for the lowest-ever births. In 2020, it reported 840,832 births and in 2021; it reported a 3.5 per cent fall to 811,604. This year, it has apparently fallen even more to a new low of 80,000.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Japan is the world's second-oldest country with a median age of 49. About, 28 per cent of its population is aged 65 years or older. The tiny city-state of Monaco with a measly population of 36,686 is the oldest, with around 36 per cent of its citizens over the age of 65.</p>

<p>The nation's fertility rate, which is the number of children a Japanese woman will have in her lifetime too took a hit. In 2021, it fell by 0.30 points to 1.30 children per woman.</p>

<h2><strong>What steps have Japan taken to deal with the so-called "ticking time bomb"?</strong></h2>

<p>To deal with the falling birthrate, Kishida's government, as per the leader, has launched multiple policies, including the new Children and Families Agency in April.</p>

<p>The policies have been designed to support parents and ensure the "sustainability" of the world's third-largest economy.</p>

<p><strong>Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/to-meet-labour-crunch-aid-an-aging-population-japan-develops-bex-a-goat-robot-484520">To meet labour crunch, aid an aging population Japan develops 'BEX' a goat-robot</a></strong></p>

<p>As per the UN, since the early 1990s, "the Japanese Government has expanded family policies and programmes in three areas: (1) childcare services; (2) parental leave schemes; and (3) monetary assistance in the form of child allowances."</p>

<p>In October 2022, the government also proposed extending parental leave from 14 weeks to 26 weeks for mothers and from eight weeks to 12 weeks for fathers.</p>

<h2><strong>What is behind this population decline?</strong></h2>

<p>Japan is dealing with two problems: a shrinking workforce and an ageing population.</p>

<p>While the rate of decline has slowed in recent years, thanks to an increase in foreign employees arriving under a more liberal visa system, coronavirus has had a detrimental impact, preventing firms facing labour shortages from hiring foreign workers.</p>

<p><strong>Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/elon-musk-says-japan-would-eventually-cease-to-exist-heres-what-he-meant-by-it-477573">Elon Musk says Japan would 'eventually cease to exist'. Here's what he meant by it</a></strong></p>

<p>Japan is not alone in&nbsp;facing this population decline. Its closest neighbours have also reported the problem. As per AFP, this could be chalked up to factors like rising living costs, more women entering the workforce and people choosing to have children later or not have them. Recently China too reported that for the first time in six decades, its population has declined.</p>

<h2><strong>What does a declining population do to a country?</strong></h2>

<p>A community with a higher proportion of senior citizens can be less appealing to businesses. Business owners face a shortage of qualified workers, while the country's economy suffers without foreign businesses.</p>

<p>Twitter CEO Elon Musk too had voiced concern about Japan's falling birth rate. In May 2022, the billionaire had warned that the nation may soon "cease to exist", which he remarked would be a great loss for the world.</p>

Addressing lawmakers during a policy address marking the start of a new parliament session, Kishida said that according to estimates the number of births in the country dropped below 800,000 last year. "Japan is standing on the verge of whether we can continue to function as a society," he warned, adding that "focusing attention on policies regarding children and child-rearing is an issue that cannot wait and cannot be postponed." Watch | WION Wideangle | Population bomb: Boon or bane? "We must build a child-first social economy to reverse the (low) birth rate," said Kishida. How serious is the situation? Japan has a population of around 125 million people, and in 2022, as the PM mentioned in his address, the population for the first time recorded only 80,000 births. Forecasts had predicted this would happen, but unfortunately, it happened eight years too soon. For the last eleven years, the country has been breaking its yearly record for the lowest-ever births. In 2020, it reported 840,832 births and in 2021; it reported a 3.5 per cent fall to 811,604. This year, it has apparently fallen even more to a new low of 80,000. Also read | Japan to pay child-rearing families millions to shift from Tokyo to rural areas Japan is the world's second-oldest country with a median age of 49. About, 28 per cent of its population is aged 65 years or older. The tiny city-state of Monaco with a measly population of 36,686 is the oldest, with around 36 per cent of its citizens over the age of 65. The nation's fertility rate, which is the number of children a Japanese woman will have in her lifetime too took a hit. In 2021, it fell by 0.30 points to 1.30 children per woman. What steps have Japan taken to deal with the so-called "ticking time bomb"? To deal with the falling birthrate, Kishida's government, as per the leader, has launched multiple policies, including the new Children and Families Agency in April. The policies have been designed to support parents and ensure the "sustainability" of the world's third-largest economy. Also read | To meet labour crunch, aid an aging population Japan develops 'BEX' a goat-robot As per the UN, since the early 1990s, "the Japanese Government has expanded family policies and programmes in three areas: (1) childcare services; (2) parental leave schemes; and (3) monetary assistance in the form of child allowances." In October 2022, the government also proposed extending parental leave from 14 weeks to 26 weeks for mothers and from eight weeks to 12 weeks for fathers. What is behind this population decline? Japan is dealing with two problems: a shrinking workforce and an ageing population. While the rate of decline has slowed in recent years, thanks to an increase in foreign employees arriving under a more liberal visa system, coronavirus has had a detrimental impact, preventing firms facing labour shortages from hiring foreign workers. Also read | Elon Musk says Japan would 'eventually cease to exist'. Here's what he meant by it Japan is not alone in facing this population decline. Its closest neighbours have also reported the problem. As per AFP, this could be chalked up to factors like rising living costs, more women entering the workforce and people choosing to have children later or not have them. Recently China too reported that for the first time in six decades, its population has declined. What does a declining population do to a country? A community with a higher proportion of senior citizens can be less appealing to businesses. Business owners face a shortage of qualified workers, while the country's economy suffers without foreign businesses. Twitter CEO Elon Musk too had voiced concern about Japan's falling birth rate. In May 2022, the billionaire had warned that the nation may soon "cease to exist", which he remarked would be a great loss for the world. At risk of stating the obvious, unless something changes to cause the birth rate to exceed the death rate, Japan will eventually cease to exist. This would be a great loss for the world. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 7, 2022 × (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
