<p>Vivek Ramaswamy, Republican Party hopeful for nomination in US Presidential Election 2023, has said that he would want Elon Musk to be his adviser should he become US president. Ramaswamy's words came as a response to a question asked during a town hall meet.</p>

<p>Ramaswamy said if he became US president, he would want to bring in "a blank fresh impression."</p>

<p>“I’ve enjoyed getting to know better&nbsp;Elon Musk recently, I expect him to be an interesting adviser of mine because he laid off 75% of the employees at Twitter,” he said.</p>

<p>When NBC News asked him about his communication with Elon Musk other than appearance on Twitter Spaces, Ramaswamy reportedly said that it has only been interaction through social media.</p>

<p>Musk has had positive words for Ramaswamy. On August 17, Musk reposted an interview between Ramaswamy and Tucker Carlson on X (formerly Twitter) and called Ramaswamy "a very promising candidate".</p>

<p>Ramaswamy has said in past that he admires the mass layoffs Musk undertook after he took over Twitter last year. He has also been vocal about his plan to shut down Department of Education, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He has spoken of mass changes across federal government and said, “mass layoffs are absolutely what I will bring to the D.C. bureaucracy.”</p>

<p>NBC reported that Musk did not respond when asked whether he would like to serve as Ramaswamy wants him to if he becomes president.</p>

<p>Though Musk has had positive words for Ramaswamy, he has stated that he does not agree with the latter's views on climate change.</p>

<p>Ramaswamy said in the recent republican debate&nbsp;that "climate change agenda" is a "hoax".</p>

<p>“It is possibly overstated in the short term, but we should be concerned about it long term,” Musk wrote on X.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Musk has interacted with another presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis who declared start of his campaign in a Twitter Space in the month of May this year. The platform had crashed as the Space was going on.</p>

Elon Musk unveils new job hiring feature on X for verified organisations

<p>The US Justice Department on Thursday (August 24) sued Elon Musk's SpaceX over hiring practices. In a statement, the Justice Department said that it filed a lawsuit against SpaceX for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring. "The lawsuit alleges that, from at least September 2018 to May 2022, SpaceX routinely discouraged asylees and refugees from applying and refused to hire or consider them, because of their citizenship status, in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)," the statement said.</p>

<p>The statement added that over several years, SpaceX wrongly claimed that under federal regulations known as “export control laws,” it could hire only American citizens and lawful permanent residents, sometimes referred to as “green card holders.”</p>

<p>"Export control laws impose no such hiring restrictions," the department further said.</p>

<h2><strong>The investigation</strong></h2>

<p>Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said on Thursday the department's investigation found that SpaceX failed to fairly consider or hire asylees and refugees because of their citizenship status and imposed what amounted to a ban on their hire regardless of their qualification, in violation of federal law.</p>

<p>"Our investigation also found that SpaceX recruiters and high-level officials took actions that actively discouraged asylees and refugees from seeking work opportunities at the company," Clarke added.</p>

<h2><strong>The discrimination during stages of hiring process</strong></h2>

<p>The lawsuit alleges that SpaceX discriminated against asylees and refugees based on citizenship status at multiple stages of the hiring process. SpaceX discouraged asylees and refugees from applying for open positions, it failed to consider applications submitted by asylees and refugees, and it also hired only American citizens and lawful permanent residents, from September 2018 to September 2020.</p>

<p>"The United States seeks fair consideration and back pay for asylees and refugees who were deterred or denied employment at SpaceX due to the alleged discrimination. The United States also seeks civil penalties in an amount to be determined by the court and policy changes to ensure it complies with the INA’s nondiscrimination mandate going forward," the statement further said.</p>

<p>He has been one of the prolific users of the social media app, even before he bought it last October for a whopping $44 billion.</p>

<p>Over the months, he often boasted about how the number of users coming to X and consuming content increased.</p>

<p>However, recent data collected by third-party researcher Travis Brown has given some reality check,&nbsp;suggesting that the picture isn’t as rosy as depicted by Musk.</p>

<p>The data, which was reviewed by Mashable, shows that around 42 per cent of Musk’s own followers, or 65.3 million accounts, have zero followers on their account, indicating that they may be inactive.</p>

<p>Further, more than 72 per cent, or nearly 112 million, of these users following Musk have less than 10 followers on their account.</p>

<p>And as far as consuming content on the platform is concerned, over 62.5 million of Musk followers have zero tweets.</p>

<p>This includes users who have deleted all of their tweets by the time this data was collected over the past few weeks as well as accounts that have never before tweeted.</p>

<p>More than 100 million Musk followers have less than 10 tweets posted to their accounts.</p>

<h2><strong>Fake accounts?</strong></h2>

<p>Recently, the Tesla CEO claimed that X now has more than 540 million "monthly users".</p>

<p>Another interesting detail that has emerged from the data is exactly when his followers created their accounts.</p>

<p>Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter on October 27, 2022. Out of all of Musk's current followers, more than 25 per cent, or 38.9 million, were created on or after that date.</p>

<p>The average number of followers for all 153 million accounts following Musk is just around 187. However, Brown tells Mashable that the follower "distributions are so skewed" that the averages aren't "very meaningful" here.</p>

<p>The data has further shown how many of Musk’s followers subscribe to X Premium, previously known as Twitter Blue that was re-launched with a price tag of $8 a month.</p>

<p>Only around 453,000 Musk followers or 0.3 percent subscribe to X Premium, the data shows.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Mashable reported earlier that there were around 830,000 X Premium subscribers in total based on another data set compiled by Brown.</p>

<p>For nearly a month now, I am often left staring at my smartphone in a short-lived moment of cluelessness. I unlock my phone and among the dozens of apps that stare back, the blue-bird logo of X's predecessor Twitter no longer exists.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Twitter's becoming of 'X' &nbsp;rings a bell and finally I am able to complete my micro-blogging needs on 'X'.&nbsp;<br />

<p>But in July 2023, Larry, and almost all signs of him left the microblogging world of internet at a purported whim of the platform's new billionaire owner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So for this Delhi-based journalist and millions of others, &nbsp;the Twitter bird was more than just a logo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also symbolised the prominence of erstwhile Twitter's micro-blogging service, which for many years was the only game in town.</p>

<p>Our posts on the platform were tweets, the sound of a bird.</p>

<p>Several hundred million tweets a day formed the orchestra of the global town-square.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some tweets, like that iconic Ellen DeGeneres selfie from the Oscars, became a moment to be drafted in the history of pop culture. (And isn't it ironic that a painting of the Oscar selfie, which arguably lit the selfie culture revolution torch, is among memorabilia that Musk seeks to sell in order to make money for Twitter, I mean X?)<br />

<p>Whatever its commercial value, Twitter was the first platform to enable global conversations. Anyone could connect to anyone by tagging their handles.</p>

<p>In a world where facts are no more sacred and comment is still free yet can cost you your life, Twitter became the sounding board of views, political slugfest arena, consumer complaint register, emergency alert notice and much else, all rolled into one. Heck, at one point it was even a terrorist recruitment platform for Islamic State and its ilk.</p>

<p>There were good-bad-ugly sides of this expressionist musical on the global town-square.</p>

Twitter or X? Life without signs of Larry the bird is no longer the same

<p>Social media application TweetDeck, which has now been changed to X Pro, on Wednesday (August 16) transformed into a paid service that would now be available to users via yearly or a monthly subscription charge.</p>

<p>On Tuesday (August 15), some users, who attempted to access X Pro, were being diverted to a paid-subscription sign-up page that asked them to pay an annual fee of $84.</p>

<p>In the month of July, X announced that TweetDeck, which is a popular application that allows users to access and monitor multiple accounts at a single time, would be available to only "verified" account holders from the month of August.</p>

<p>The popular social media firm, which was taken over by billionaire Elon Musk in the year 2022, has been announcing new ways to make profits. After he bought Twitter, now known as X, Musk went on a massive layoff spree to cut down expenses and also increased its paid subscription fee.</p>

<p>Last week, the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Linda Yaccarino said that the organisation was "close" to breaking even and would strengthen staffing that had been slashed by Musk.</p>

<p>The verified users of platform X are mostly the ones that have paid to receive the blue checkmark, though Musk has gifted the verification symbol to some.</p>

<p>TweetDeck, which was launched over a decade ago, shows messages in columns and its search and posting functions operate differently from the website or the application.</p>

<p>Twitter bought London-based TweetDeck in the year 2011, at a price tag of&nbsp;$40 million at the time.</p>

<h2><strong>X may soon add ID verification to tackle bots</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter, may soon add ID verification features for preventing impersonation. According to a report by Engadget on Thursday (August 17), app researcher Nima Owji shared a screenshot on X which showed that the platform is working on an additional verification feature that requires users to upload a copy of their government-issued ID and snap a selfie.</p>

<p>"X keeps working on the ID verification. You should upload a photo of your ID and take a live selfie," Owji said late Thursday. He had first spotted an “ID-verified” badge on Musk’s profile earlier in August. “Verify your account by providing government-issued ID,” the X description reads. “This usually takes about 5 minutes,” it adds.</p>

<h2><strong>X to address shadowbanning soon: Musk</strong></h2>

<p>X owner Elon Musk says that the social media giant will address shadowbanning soon. Shadowbanning would not outrightly ban users, but make changes that ensure their content is no longer circulated and kept out of public view.</p>

<p>After taking over Twitter last year, Musk attempted to prove that shadowbanning was a common practice on the social media network. He insisted that users should have the right to know if they’ve been shadowbanned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before the delay in accessing the links was reversed, representatives from The New York Times expressed concerns over the incident. <p>US billionaire <strong>Elon Musk</strong> has shared new details about his upcoming cage fight against Meta boss <strong>Mark Zuckerberg</strong>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Musk on Friday (August 11) took to X to announce that the fight will be managed by his and Zuckerberg’s foundations and not by UFC, the mixed martial arts (MMA) organisation.</p>

<p>Notably, UFC President Dana White had earlier offered to facilitate a fight between the two billionaires.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also declared that the event will be livestreamed on X and Meta. In his post, Musk wrote, “Everything in camera frame will be ancient Rome, so nothing modern at all.”</p>

<p>He added that he had talked to the Italian prime minister and the minister of culture and that they have agreed “on an epic location.”</p>

<p>ABC Australia released a statement saying that it will shut down all of its official accounts on Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, citing high costs and "toxic interactions" on the microblogging social media platform as the reasons behind the closure.</p>

<p>Managing Director David Anderson made an announcement saying that aside from ABC News, ABC Sport, ABC Chinese and ABC Australia, will also shut their official accounts down from Wednesday.</p>

<p>He further said that discontinuing the ABC accounts earlier this year had an extremely positive impact and reduced the toxic interactions that take place online.</p>

<p>"There are multiple reasons for this decision," he said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This move comes after ABC began creating content for other platforms, including TikTok and Instagram. He said that the vast majority of their digital audience was located elsewhere.</p>

<p>"The vast majority of the ABC’s social media audience is located on other platforms and we want to focus our effort and resources where our audiences are."</p>

<p>Many journalists from the media organisation had left the platform after being subjected to abuse. The high-profile names include News Breakfast host Lisa Millar and Australian Story host Leigh Sales.</p>

<p>Anderson said that the additional charges, which were introduced after Elon Musk's takeover, had made the microblogging site "increasingly costly to use".</p>

<p>In the month of April, NPR and PBS discontinued their presence on X. They left the microblogging site after CEO Elon Musk dubbed them as “state media”.</p>

<p>In the same month, ABC and SBS were also branded as “government-funded media”.</p>

<p>As per Guardian reports, a spokesperson had released a statement then saying that ABC will not follow in the footsteps of NPR and PBS by quitting Twitter.</p>

<p>“The ABC doesn’t currently have any plans to shut down all its Twitter accounts. We’re liaising with Twitter regarding changes to account verification and labels,” they said.</p>
