Elon Musk breaks silence after damning poll called for his resignation as Twitter CEO

<p>In the seventh instalment of Twitter files, Michael Shellenberger, an independent journalist in a thread on the microblogging platform, on Monday, revealed that the “FBI and intelligence community discredited factual information” about incumbent United States President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden’s “foreign business dealings.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The move was also reportedly made after a New York Post report on October 14, 2020, regarding&nbsp;emails&nbsp;on Hunter Biden’s laptop. Authorised by the new Twitter owner and CEO, Elon Musk, “Twitter Files” has been a series of posts in the form of a thread of tweets which have been disclosing the company’s once-secret communications with the help of independent journalists.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These tweets follow&nbsp;the sixth instalment by independent journalist and author Matt Taibbi which uncovered how the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) “relentlessly” sought to “exercise influence” over the microblogging platform, its users, content, and data.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This time around, Shellenberger citing email conversations shows how the FBI alerted Twitter to suppress and “discredit” the Hunter Biden laptop story as a “Russian ‘hack and leak’ operation”.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>How did the New York Post get access to Hunter Biden’s laptop?</strong></p>

<p>In late 2019, Delaware computer store owner John Paul Mac Isaac contacted the FBI informing them about the laptop which Hunter Biden had left with them which reportedly found “evidence of criminal activity”. Subsequently, a subpoena was issued and the laptop was taken by the agency, said the report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, when by 2020 Mac Issac had not heard back from the FBI he reportedly emailed former New York Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, who at the time, was a part of former US President Donald Trump’s personal legal team. “In early Oct, Giuliani gives it (evidence of criminal activity) to @nypost”, said Shellenberger.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Documents posted by the independent journalist showed the communication between Twitter’s former head of trust and safety, Yoel Roth and FBI Agent Elvis Chan hours before the Post broke Hunter Biden's story in 2020. The agent used&nbsp;Teleporter, a one-way communication channel the FBI agent and sent at least 10 documents on October 13.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Chan testified under oath that the FBI did not have any information about the alleged Russian campaign. Furthermore, following this exchange between Chan and Roth, Hunter Biden's attorney George Mesires contacted the computer store owner Isaac after finding out the Post was going to publish its first story based on the files recovered from the abandoned laptop, the next day, the report claims.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The New York Post runs its explosive story revealing the business dealings of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter. Every single fact in it was accurate,” said the independent journalist about the story NY Post ran on October 14, 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>What happened next?</strong></p>

<p>According to Shellenberger, “within hours, Twitter and other social media companies censor the NY Post article, preventing it from spreading and, more importantly, undermining its credibility in the minds of many Americans.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, there was a debate within Twitter about censoring a “wholly accurate article”, said the report. It&nbsp;added, “Since then, we have discovered new info that points to an organised effort by the intel community to influence Twitter and other platforms”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“First, it's important to understand that Hunter Biden earned *tens of millions* of dollars in contracts with foreign businesses, including ones linked to China's government, for which Hunter offered no real work,” claims&nbsp;the independent journalist. However, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies reportedly asked Roth to dismiss the reports as a “Russian ‘hack and leak’ operation”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Linking a video of Meta (Facebook and Instagram parent company) CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Shellenberger quoting Zuckerberg wrote, “The FBI basically came to us [and] was like, ‘Hey... you should be on high alert. <p>Furthermore, citing multiple exchanges between Twitter executives and the FBI, the report also said that the former “reported very little Russian activity” to the latter. In November, Chan also admitted, “Through our investigations, we did not see any similar competing intrusions to what had happened in 2016”.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Mounting pressure from the FBI&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>In subsequent tweets, the journalist talks about how Roth repeatedly pushed back against the FBI, the first instance was a story by the Washington Post about the 2020 elections. FBI asked Roth about the WaPo story “on alleged foreign influence in a pro-Trump tweet” to which Twitter's Roth says, "The article makes a lot of insinuations... but we saw no evidence that that was the case here (and in fact, a lot of strong evidence pointing in the other direction).”</p>

<a class="close-mark close-div" href="#" id="jqclosemark">×</a></div>

<p>In January 2020, Shellenberger claims that the FBI asked Roth to “get Twitter to share data outside of the normal search warrant process.” An email dated January 2020 shows that Roth’s sent an email saying, “We have seen a sustained (If uncoordinated) effort by the IC [intelligence community] to push us to share more info &amp; change our API policies. &nbsp; They are probing &amp; pushing everywhere they can (including by whispering to congressional staff).”</p>

<p>Eventually, six months later, Chan arranges “temporary Top Secret security clearances for Twitter executives so that the FBI can share information about threats to the upcoming elections,” said the report.&nbsp;Subsequently, in August 2020, Chan “shares information with Twitter's Roth relating to the Russian hacking organization, APT28”, Shellenberger said quoting an email sent to Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, Chan also asked Twitter, “does anyone there have top secret clearance?” when someone mentioned Jim Baker, who according to Shellenberger, is one of the most powerful men in the US intel community. The report also claims that “As general counsel of the FBI, Baker played a central role in making the case internally for an investigation of Donald Trump.”</p>

<p>However, he was not the FBI executive working at Twitter, “Dawn Burton, the former dep. chief of staff to FBI head James Comey, who initiated the investigation of Trump, joined Twitter in 2019 as director of strategy,” the report claimed. There were many former FBI employees working at Twitter by 2020 that they had reportedly created their own private Slack channel to onboard new FBI arrivals.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>The Aftermath&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>In a recent interview, earlier this year, Roth claims that he was primed to think about the APT28 before the news of Hunter Biden's laptop came out. Therefore, when it did, Roth said that “It set off every single one of my finely tuned APT28 hack-and-leap campaign alarm bells.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the article by New York Post was published on October 14, in an email Roth allegedly said, “it isn’t clearly violative of our Hacked Materials Policy, nor is it clearly in violation of anything else," but adds, “this feels a lot like a somewhat subtle leak operation.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Baker reportedly insisted, “the Hunter Biden materials were either faked, hacked, or both, and a violation of Twitter policy. Baker does so over email, and in a Google doc, on October 14 and 15,” said Shellenberger.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The article which was published at 5:00 am (local time) shook Twitter and by 10:00 am, “Twitter execs had bought into a wild hack-and-dump story,” Shellenberger claimed. He added, “The suggestion from experts - which rings true - is there was a hack that happened separately, and they loaded the hacked materials on the laptop that magically appeared at a repair shop in Delaware”, said the report quoting an email.&nbsp;</p>

After FBI asks about a WaPo story on alleged foreign influence in a pro-Trump tweet, Twitter's Roth says, "The article makes a lot of insinuations... but we saw no evidence that that was the case here (and in fact, a lot of strong evidence pointing in the other direction).” pic.twitter.com/jJjnczZnA5 — Michael Shellenberger (@ShellenbergerMD) December 19, 2022 × In January 2020, Shellenberger claims that the FBI asked Roth to “get Twitter to share data outside of the normal search warrant process.” An email dated January 2020 shows that Roth’s sent an email saying, “We have seen a sustained (If uncoordinated) effort by the IC [intelligence community] to push us to share more info & change our API policies. They are probing & pushing everywhere they can (including by whispering to congressional staff).” Eventually, six months later, Chan arranges “temporary Top Secret security clearances for Twitter executives so that the FBI can share information about threats to the upcoming elections,” said the report. Subsequently, in August 2020, Chan “shares information with Twitter's Roth relating to the Russian hacking organization, APT28”, Shellenberger said quoting an email sent to Twitter. Furthermore, Chan also asked Twitter, “does anyone there have top secret clearance?” when someone mentioned Jim Baker, who according to Shellenberger, is one of the most powerful men in the US intel community. The report also claims that “As general counsel of the FBI, Baker played a central role in making the case internally for an investigation of Donald Trump.” However, he was not the FBI executive working at Twitter, “Dawn Burton, the former dep. chief of staff to FBI head James Comey, who initiated the investigation of Trump, joined Twitter in 2019 as director of strategy,” the report claimed. There were many former FBI employees working at Twitter by 2020 that they had reportedly created their own private Slack channel to onboard new FBI arrivals. The Aftermath In a recent interview, earlier this year, Roth claims that he was primed to think about the APT28 before the news of Hunter Biden's laptop came out. Therefore, when it did, Roth said that “It set off every single one of my finely tuned APT28 hack-and-leap campaign alarm bells.” 24. Recently, Yoel Roth told @karaswisher that he had been primed to think about the Russian hacking group APT28 before news of the Hunter Biden laptop came out. Baker does so over email, and in a Google doc, on October 14 and 15,” said Shellenberger. The article which was published at 5:00 am (local time) shook Twitter and by 10:00 am, “Twitter execs had bought into a wild hack-and-dump story,” Shellenberger claimed. He added, “The suggestion from experts - which rings true - is there was a hack that happened separately, and they loaded the hacked materials on the laptop that magically appeared at a repair shop in Delaware”, said the report quoting an email. 38. In 2020, the FBI gave a briefing to Senator Grassley and Johnson, claiming evidence of “Russian interference” into their investigation of Hunter Biden. The briefing angered the Senators, who say it was done to discredit their investigation.https://t.co/5QsJKMPhpM — Michael Shellenberger (@ShellenbergerMD) December 19, 2022 × Notably, Jim Baker was fired by Musk, earlier this month, after his alleged role in attempting to stop the release of Twitter Files came to light. 45. In the end, the FBI's influence campaign aimed at executives at news media, Twitter, & other social media companies worked: they censored & discredited the Hunter Biden laptop story. By Dec. 2020, Baker and his colleagues even sent a note of thanks to the FBI for its work. pic.twitter.com/ZEASt2aXXm — Michael Shellenberger (@ShellenbergerMD) December 19, 2022 × WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Twitter files 7.0 show FBI pressured social media platforms to ‘discredit’ Hunter Biden laptop story

<p>Elon Musk recently learned the perils of letting his followers vote on important decisions regarding Twitter. He had asked his over 120 million followers whether he should quit as head of Twitter. 57.5 per cent said he should, and the rest disagreed. Meanwhile, popular rapper Snoop Dogg ran a parallel vote. He asked his fans as to whether he should run Twitter and was voted overwhelmingly by fans to be the next head of the social media site. While 81 per cent voted yes, 19 per cent voted no. Clearly, Dogg running Twitter has its takers, though it is anybody's guess what the platform would look like if Dogg really were to take over.</p>

Snoop Dogg fans want him to be head of Twitter even as Elon Musk loses poll

<p>On Sunday (December 18), Argentina and France locked horns in one of the greatest World Cup finals. After a riveting group stage, Round of 16, quarters and semi-finals, the FIFA World Cup 2022 edition's finale saw the defending champions France take on Lionel Messi's Argentina at the Lusail Stadium, Qatar. The momentum shifted from one side to another and the regular and extra time ended with nothing separating the two nations, with the scoreline reading 3-3. In the penalty shootout, Messi &amp; Co. emerged on top, 4-2, to win their first-ever World Cup in 36 years (after 1986) as the Argentine captain's WC run ended in a dream fashion.</p>

<p>Following the epic finale, reactions have been pouring in from all corners. From the likes of Google CEO Sundar Pichai,&nbsp; Sachin Tendulkar, Brazil legend Pele, tennis sensation Andy Murray, Neymar and many others, wishes have been flowing in for the victorious Argentine team. <strong>Here are some of the reactions:</strong></p>

On Sunday (December 18), Argentina and France locked horns in one of the greatest World Cup finals. In the penalty shootout, Messi & Co. emerged on top, 4-2, to win their first-ever World Cup in 36 years (after 1986) as the Argentine captain's WC run ended in a dream fashion. Following the epic finale, reactions have been pouring in from all corners. From the likes of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Sachin Tendulkar, Brazil legend Pele, tennis sensation Andy Murray, Neymar and many others, wishes have been flowing in for the victorious Argentine team. Here are some of the reactions: Many congratulations to Argentina on doing this for Messi! Wonderful comeback from the way they started the campaign. Twitter users vote in favour of removing Elon Musk as CEO

Twitter's owner Elon Musk is asking users of the social media platform to vote on his future as its chief executive officer. In a poll to his 122 million followers, he tweeted: "Should I step down as head... I will abide by the results..."

Elon Musk puts his future at Twitter to public vote

<p>Elon Musk-owned social media giant Twitter said on Sunday (December 18) that it was banning users from including links to other social media platforms in their posts. The latest move is sure to bring Twitter in popular discussion yet again after its takover by Elon Musk.</p>

<p>"At both the Tweet level and the account level, we will remove any free promotion of prohibited 3rd-party social media platforms, such as linking out (i.e. using URLs) to any of the below platforms on Twitter, or providing your handle without a URL," Twitter said in a statement on its website.</p>

<p>The outside platforms include Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Post and Truth Social, as well as third-party social media link aggregators such as linktr.ee and ink.bio.</p>

<p>Twitter, previously run by Jack Dorsey, was acquired by billionaire Elon Musk in recent months. The platform has been a fixture in news headlines ever since. First it was summary sacking of its old board including former CEO Parag Agrawal. Then it was firing of nearly half the workforce. These sudden decisions did rock the Twitter boat as questions were raised about the platform's stability in light of mass layoffs.</p>

<p>Over last few days, Musk has been on the receiving end of global criticism for suspending accounts of journalists writing on an account which used information in public domain to track Elon Musk's jet.</p>

Twitter to now ban users from posting links to rival platforms

<p>Following a wave of suspensions by CEO Elon Musk, Taylor Lorenz of The Washington Post was the most recent journalist to be barred from Twitter.</p>

<p>Lorenz said that she was looking into Musk for a story alongside Post technology reporter Drew Harwell. She had attempted to get in touch with the business mogul earlier in the week, but her messages went unanswered. On Saturday, she made another try by tagging Musk in a tweet asking for an interview. The tweet did not specify the subject in detail.</p>

<p>Lorenz received a message that her account had been "permanently suspended" when she returned later on Saturday to see whether there had been a reaction on Twitter.</p>

<p>“I won’t say I didn’t anticipate it,” Lorenz said in a phone interview early Sunday with The Associated Press. She said she wasn’t given a specific reason for the ban.</p>

<p>Last week, Twitter suspended the accounts of several journalists, including writers for The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, Voice of America, and other organisations, who cover the social media network and Elon Musk. Many of those accounts were recovered when Musk conducted an online survey.</p>

<p>“Again, the suspension occurred with no warning, process or explanation -- this time as our reporter merely sought comment from Musk for a story,” Buzbee said. “Post journalists should be reinstated immediately, without arbitrary conditions.“</p>

She had attempted to get in touch with the business mogul earlier in the week, but her messages went unanswered. On Saturday, she made another try by tagging Musk in a tweet asking for an interview. The tweet did not specify the subject in detail. Lorenz received a message that her account had been "permanently suspended" when she returned later on Saturday to see whether there had been a reaction on Twitter. “I won’t say I didn’t anticipate it,” Lorenz said in a phone interview early Sunday with The Associated Press. She said she wasn’t given a specific reason for the ban. Last week, Twitter suspended the accounts of several journalists, including writers for The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, Voice of America, and other organisations, who cover the social media network and Elon Musk. Many of those accounts were recovered when Musk conducted an online survey. European Union warns Elon Musk after Twitter suspends accounts of over half-a-dozen journalists

<p>Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk seems to have his hands full with his takeover of Twitter. With managing the social media platform proving to be quite a task, voices of concern have started emerging about Musk's other companies, Tesla in particular. Financial analysts appear to increasingly agree that Twitter has made Musk take his attention off his other ventures.</p>

<p>"I think there's a real feeling that Elon Musk has taken his eye off the Tesla ball really since the purchase of Twitter. It seems he's dedicated an awful lot of his time to trying to turn around Twitter and make it the company he wants it to be. And as a result, there is a feeling that he's neglecting Tesla, which, of course, has been affected by headwinds of its own, not least the Chinese slowdown...," said Hargreaves Lansdown, Senior Investment and Markets Analyst, Susannah Streeter.</p>

<p>He was quoted by Reuters.</p>

<p>When Musk was in the middle of the protracted process to acquire Twitter, investors in his other companies had expressed concerns that the billionaire was spreading himself too thin by taking over the platform. The days after his takeover have been rocky for the company as his sacked nearly half of its staff. This threatened to destabilise the function of Twitter.</p>

<p>It was revealed on Wednesday (December 14) that Musk sold USD 3.6 billion worth of stocks in Tesla. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The sale is the second big chunk of stock he has cashed out since his $44 billion purchase of Twitter in October, despite his repeated assurance in April that he was done selling Tesla shares.</p>

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk seems to have his hands full with his takeover of Twitter. With managing the social media platform proving to be quite a task, voices of concern have started emerging about Musk's other companies, Tesla in particular. Financial analysts appear to increasingly agree that Twitter has made Musk take his attention off his other ventures. "I think there's a real feeling that Elon Musk has taken his eye off the Tesla ball really since the purchase of Twitter. It seems he's dedicated an awful lot of his time to trying to turn around Twitter and make it the company he wants it to be. And as a result, there is a feeling that he's neglecting Tesla, which, of course, has been affected by headwinds of its own, not least the Chinese slowdown...," said Hargreaves Lansdown, Senior Investment and Markets Analyst, Susannah Streeter. He was quoted by Reuters. When Musk was in the middle of the protracted process to acquire Twitter, investors in his other companies had expressed concerns that the billionaire was spreading himself too thin by taking over the platform. The days after his takeover have been rocky for the company as his sacked nearly half of its staff. This threatened to destabilise the function of Twitter. It was revealed on Wednesday (December 14) that Musk sold USD 3.6 billion worth of stocks in Tesla. The sale is the second big chunk of stock he has cashed out since his $44 billion purchase of Twitter in October, despite his repeated assurance in April that he was done selling Tesla shares.
