Twitter blue ticks to disappear on April 1, here's what to do to retain them

According to the calculation on a leaked memo of billionaire Elon Musk, the worth of Twitter is less than half of what he spent to buy it six months ago, reflecting that Musk faced a loss of more than $20 billion (£16.4 billion) in value.

In the memo, Musk suggested to the staff of the social media company that it is now valued at less than $20 billion. Comparing this with the hefty amount of $44 billion with which he bought the company in October 2022 clearly shows the loss he is facing.

The steep devaluation of the company follows the turbulent takeover by Musk. The platform was left by various large advertisers. Investment firm Fidelity which worked as a major source of funds for Musk in purchasing the company has written down its stake's value by 56 per cent.

The measure of Twitter's worth was based on the offer of Musk stock grants, as per the Platformer and the Information which was the first one to report about the memo.

Stock grants, which are normally used as a way to incentivise employees, are an opportunity to purchase shares that cannot be sold till a set point in time, as opposed to the stock options, which – on the basis of the applied conditions – can remain flexible.

It is aimed at encouraging staff to meet a set valuation by a given point in time so that the shares for cash can be sold. The stock grants can be “sold every six months, based on a third party valuation”, read another internal email sent to Twitter staff.

What? Verified Twitter account without Blue checkmark? Musk’s platform steps up to avoid shame, trolling

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has reportedly offered stock awards to his employees based on a rough valuation of $20 billion, which is less than half of the $44 billion price he bought the company last year.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper reported that Musk sent an e-mail to his staff where he was optimistic about the social-media company’s future.

“I see a clear, but difficult, path to a &gt;$250B valuation,” meaning stock granted now would be worth 10 times more, he said, according to the newspaper.

In a separate email late Friday, Twitter told employees that it is offering new equity grants to staff that will start to vest after six months.

The stock-based compensation is a popular practice adopted by tech companies in US to attract talent. Employees are rewarded with stock options that will vest, or become available for purchase, at a later date.

Musk, in his note, pointed out that radical changes are being made so rapidly that the company “can be thought of as an inverse startup.” He added that these changes are necessary in part to ensure that the social media company didn’t go bankrupt.

According to the report, the new grants will vest over four years, and will be in addition to and separate from any legacy Twitter equity that was converted to cash at the time of the acquisition in October 2022.

Twitter is yet to make an official announcement in this regard. When WSJ sought a response, Twitter’s press email responded with a poop emoji—which is the company’s auto-response for media inquires, as mandated by Musk.

When Musk took over Twitter last year, several questions were raised on how Twitter would handle compensation going forward as a private company.

At that time, the company, in a regulatory filing, said that employees’ stock grants would be converted into the right to receive cash for $54.20 a share, the acquisition price.

In February, the tech billionaire told staff in an email that Twitter would make “very significant stock and other compensation awards, based on performance.”&nbsp;He said that the employees would get more information on March 24.

According to people familiar with the matter cited by Semafor, Musk told fellow co-founder Sam Altman that he thought OpenAI was lagging behind Alphabet-owned Google in the AI race. Elon Musk, who co-founded ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, left before the firm made fortunes

Here we bring you a quick round-up of all latest news and top headlines from all across the globe. The World Health Organization on Thursday warned against "fake news" after Twitter boss Elon Musk tweeted that countries should not "cede authority to WHO" amid negotiations over a new pandemic treaty.

Trump created false expectations of arrest; Musk & W.H.O spar over UN agency's role

Billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla has embarked on a strategy that has triggered a price war among the electric carmakers in the hyper-competitive Chinese market. The company has slashed prices of its cars, up to 50 per cent, that has forced other companies to take similar steps in order to stay competitive. Tesla's deep price cut even threatens to drive competitors out of the market.

Tesla's gameplan came into force last October. Tesla, a dominant player in the Chinese market, manufactures its cars at its factory in Shanghai. The initial price cut in October was followed by another round which made Tesla's locally manufactured cars 14 per cent cheaper than they were last year. In some cases, the cars were 50 per cent cheaper than their price in the US and Europe.

Tesla's aggressive pricing strategy forced other carmakers to reduce prices of their models. Both, local and global brands have got drawn into the price war. These include Xpeng, Nio Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz to name a few.&nbsp;

Mercedes Benz has offered a discount of up to 70,000 yuan (USD 10,000). Ford Motor Company has brought down the price of its Mach-E electric sport utility vehicle to 209,000 yuan. This makes it cheaper by about a third than it is in the US.

“Tesla created havoc for the rest of the market,” said Jochen Siebert, managing director of JSC Automotive, a consultancy with offices in Shanghai and Stuttgart.
&nbsp;&nbsp;
Siebert was quoted by Bloomberg in its report over the situation.

Tesla's aggressive pricing strategy forced other carmakers to reduce prices of their models. Both, local and global brands have got drawn into the price war. These include Xpeng, Nio Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz to name a few. Siebert was quoted by Bloomberg in its report over the situation. (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Tesla’s 50 per cent price slash creates ‘havoc’ in Chinese electric car market: Report

A new financial scam has been unearthed in which scamsters are exploiting the Twitter Blue service to dupe users, which once again shows the downside of distributing the blue checkmark to anyone who is willing to pay for it.

A new financial scam has been unearthed in which scamsters are exploiting the Twitter Blue service to dupe users, which once again shows the downside of distributing the blue checkmark to anyone who is willing to pay for it. Twitter users are being targetted by crooks impersonating banks or banking officials, according to a New York Post report. When a user posts a complaint related to their bank account by tagging the bank (say @ICICI or @Wellsfargo), the scammer posing as the customer service representative approaches them. The scamster usually quote tweets the original tweet and gives a helpline number to the user. Once the customer takes the bait and calls on the number, the scammer manages to collect private information such as login credentials to access the user's bank account. Thanks to Elon Musk's newly launched Twitter Blue subscription service, scammers are able to buy the blue checkmark and trick customers into believing that the particular Twitter account is the legit and official handle of the company. ALSO READ | Twitter to make its code used for recommending tweets public, says Elon Musk With Musk announcing the removal of legacy checkmarks soon, the companies will have to quickly apply for Twitter Blue or risk letting customers fall prey to such elaborate scams yet again. This is not the first instance where Twitter has been used by pranksters and scammers. Last year, after the rollout of the blue checkmark subscription service, a Twitter user impersonating basketball player LeBron James demanded a trade from NBA franchise Los Angeles Lakers. Similarly, American pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly lost billions after its stock plunged following a tweet by a fake, verified account posing as the company. The account tweeted that Eli Lilly, one of the largest producers of insulin in the world was selling it for free. Before the error was rectified, over $15 billion in market cap was erased. WATCH | Elon Musk: Twitter will charge $8 per month for Blue Tick × “We apologise to those who have been served a misleading message from a fake Lilly account. Our official Twitter account is @LillyPad," the company said in a clarification statement later. Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion last year but soon found out that the company was red in most financial metrics. To drive up the revenue, Musk launched the $8 verification system which has received a mixed response so far. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

A former Tesla Inc employee has made shocking revelations about the working conditions at Elon Musk's electric car company. Benjamen Simon, a former regional service manager, has alleged that even amid a heatwave as temperatures reached "dangerous" levels, the billionaire was "too cheap" to install air conditioning. He further claimed that he was fired for complaining about the perilous working conditions.

Simon claims to have reported the unsafe working conditions several times. The former Tesla employee, as per a complaint filed with the Boston federal court, claims that he urged the management to install air conditioning and that he kept escalating the requests.&nbsp;

Morning news brief: Bhopal gas tragedy verdict today, Trump Iowa rally, and more

The definition of ‘utopia’ is different for different people. When you're rich you don't need to look for it, you can just make your own utopia. This is what billionaire Elon Musk is doing. As per reports, the Twitter, and Tesla CEO, is planning to set up his own town just outside of Austin, Texas. A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report citing land records and deeds reveals that it&nbsp;will be located along the Colorado River.

<h2>What will Elon Musk do with a whole town?</h2>

The report claims that this new town will serve as housing for Austin-area employees of Musk's companies: Tesla, SpaceX and The Boring Company.

<h2>What will the town be called?</h2>

Reportedly, the town will not be called 'Elonland', 'Muskville' or even be named after the billionaire. Rather, it will be named 'Snailbrook'&nbsp;after The Boring Company's mascot —&nbsp;Gary the Snail.&nbsp;

Streets in the town will have names like 'Boring Boulevard',&nbsp;'Waterjet Way' and 'Cutterhead Crossing'.&nbsp;These names have reportedly been approved by Bastrop County officials in county meetings.

<h2>Where will it be located?</h2>

Snailbrook as per the WSJ report will be situated around 35 miles from Austin, in Bastrop County.

Executives at the Boring Co.&nbsp;have reportedly discussed and researched, incorporating the town there. However, so far, the county hasn't received any applications from them.

Over the last four years, Elon Musk's companies have purchased 3,500 acres&nbsp;in the Austin area. This is equal to&nbsp;land four times the size of New York's massive Central Park. This figure is based on county deeds and other land records.

Citing local real-estate and land officials, WSJ says that the size of the land the Twitter CEO owns might actually be more — as much as 6,000 acres.

<h2>Why would Musk's employees leave their houses and move there?</h2>

The housing in Snailbrook will be available to Elon Musk's employees at reduced rents.

Starting last year, Boring employees could apply for cheaper homes with rents starting from just $800 a month for two or three-bedroom houses. This is around three times cheaper than the current market rate.

Currently, the average rent in Bastrop, Texas, as per real-estate listing company Zillow Group Inc stands at around $2,200 a month.

<h2>What about the employees' families?</h2>

They will, of course, be permitted to reside in Snailbrook. As per the WSJ report, the Boring Company even plans to convert a home on the property into a Montessori school for as many as 15 students.

<h2>What do we know about its design?</h2>

Given the businessman's flair for innovation, it for sure won't be just some boring town. Work at the site has already begun, and it will house modular homes, a pool and an outdoor sports area so the employees can stay fit.

Reportedly, Musk, his former girlfriend Grimes and Kanye West a.k.a Ye last year had several discussions over what the town might look like.

<h2>So, when do they move in?</h2>

Most probably as soon as the construction is done.&nbsp;

The billionaire may even have plans to have the town incorporated. But, before Musk can apply for incorporation or charter from the state, Snailbrook will need at least 201 residents and a county judge's approval.

Bastrop County, as per its spokesperson, is yet to receive an application from Musk or any of his entities.

Once Snailbrook gets incorporated, it will legally be allowed to have its own elected officials, and make its own rules.

<h2>Why did Elon Musk choose Texas?</h2>

Before Texas, California was Musk's home. However, the billionaire left his longtime home some two years back. His companies, Tesla and The Boring Company, also had their headquarters moved from California to Texas.

This, as per a 2021 statement by the Tesla CEO, is because California is the land of "overregulation, overlitigation, overtaxation".

<h2>Will the billionaire live in Snailbrook?</h2>

Yes, the report citing 'people familiar with the plans' claims that the plans for Snailbrook include a project to build a private residential compound for Musk.

However, this private compound won't be located within the rest of the employee housing. It'll be at some distance from the planned town.

Texas, as per WSJ, has "fewer zoning laws and environmental and labour requirements, and has vast swaths of loosely regulated land".&nbsp;Additionally, Texas does not impose corporate income tax or income or capital gains taxes on individuals.

Even as the plans and construction for Snailbrook town progress at breakneck speed, residents of the area aren't too happy. David Barrow, who runs a farm in Bastrop, is worried the new projects could threaten the Colorado River's water quality.

His worries may be justified. Recently, the Boring Company applied for a permit from Texas state environmental authorities. This permit seeks to discharge up to 140,000 gallons of industrial wastewater a day into the Colorado River.&nbsp;

"I would like to know what is actually being sprayed, what they’re actually building, and who is going to hold them accountable," says the farmer.

Adena Lewis, the county’s director of tourism and economic development, however, says she has no concerns that the company's development could harm the river or surrounding farmland. Despite this, after being approached by the county's farmers, State Senator Sarah Eckhardt requested a public environmental hearing.

"We’re going to need to have more of a conversation and be able to verify the assertions that these companies are making with regard to the discharge permit into the Colorado River," she said. The hearing is scheduled for this month.

Just hours before the sudden collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank, the biggest bank failure in the US since the 2007-2008 Global Financial Crisis, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the Treasury Department is keeping a close look at a few banks.

Auto safety regulators in the US have launched a fresh probe into Tesla's Model Y SUV after reports claimed that the steering wheels of the vehicle came off while being driven. Federal safety regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that it took cognisance of two complaints by the owners who said the car was delivered to them with a missing bolt that apparently holds the steering wheel in place to the steering column. "The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is aware of two reports of complete detachment of the steering wheel from the steering column while driving the 2023 Model Year Tesla Model Y vehicles," noted the agency in a statement. "Both vehicles were delivered to the owners missing the retaining bolt which attaches the steering wheel to the steering column." Fortunately, the accident took place in an isolated area and no one was harmed. The customer added that after being denied a refund for the cost of the repair, he was granted the option of keeping the car or getting it replaced with a new one. The 45-year-old ex-employee worked as a senior director in product design for the microblogging site. The Iceland-based entrepreneur sold his company, Ueno, a creative design agency to Twitter in 2021 and became a full-time employee at the microblogging platform.&nbsp;

The conversation went viral, with Musk wading in with some replies. He criticised Halli saying that he is an independently wealthy man who actually did no actual work and claimed his disability as an excuse that prevented him from typing, yet was simultaneously tweeting up a storm.

Musk added that he can't say if he has a lot of respect for that.

However, hours later, Musk took to the platform to apologise after&nbsp;former Lonely Planet CEO Daniel Houghton vouched for the designer and tweeted that he had directly worked with him. Musk also offered&nbsp;Thorleifsson his job back.

"I would like to apologise to Halli for my misunderstanding of his situation. It was based on things I was told that were untrue or, in some cases, true, but not meaningful."

"He is considering remaining at Twitter," he added.

After being fired, Halli told BBC that HR remained unresponsive to his queries about whether he was fired or not, following which he had to take up with Musk on Twitter.

"My theory is they made a mistake and are now looking for anything they can find to make this a "for cause" firing to avoid having to fulfil their contractual obligations," he said.

Elon Musk apologises to sacked Twitter employee after online exchange

“A toast to the disruptors,” Edward Norton’s tech billionaire says in Rian Johnson’s Oscar-nominated Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

And why not a toast? Sunday’s Academy Awards won’t give a prize for best villain, but if they did, Miles Bron would win it in a walk. (With apologies to the cloud of Nope.) He is an immediately recognisable type we’ve grown well acquainted with: a visionary (or so everyone says), a social media narcissist, a self-styled disrupter who talks a lot about “breaking stuff.”

Miles Bron is just the latest in a long line of Hollywood’s favorite villain: the tech bro. Looking north to Silicon Valley, the movie industry has found perhaps its richest resource of big-screen antagonists since Soviet-era Russia.

Great movie villains don’t come along often. The best-picture nominated Top Gun: Maverick, like its predecessor, was content to battle with a faceless enemy of unspecified nationality. Why antagonise international ticket buyers when Tom Cruise vs. Whomever works just fine?

But in recent years, the tech bro has proliferated on movie screens as Hollywood’s go-to bad guy. It’s a rise that has mirrored mounting fears over technology’s expanding reach into our lives and increasing skepticism for the not-always-altruistic motives of the men – and it is mostly men – who control today’s digital empires.

We’ve had the devious Biosyn Genetics CEO (Campbell Scott) in Jurassic World: Dominion, a franchise dedicated to the peril of tech overreach; Chris Hemsworth’s biotech overlord in Spiderhead; and Mark Rylance’s maybe-Earth-destroying tech guru in 2021′s Don’t Look Up. We’ve had Eisenberg, again, as a tech bro-styled Lex Luthor in 2016′s Batman v. Superman; Harry Melling’s pharmaceutical entrepreneur in 2020’s The Old Guard; Taika Waititi’s rule-breaking videogame mogul in 2021′s Free Guy; Oscar Isaac’s search engine CEO in 2014′s Ex Machina; and the critical portrait of the Apple co-founder in 2015′s Steve Jobs.

Kids movies, too, regularly channel parental anxieties about technology’s impact on children. In 2021′s The Mitchells vs. the Machines,&nbsp;a newly launched AI brings about a robot apocalypse. Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021) also used a robot metaphor for smartphone addiction. And TV series have just as aggressively rushed to dramatise Big Tech blunders. Recent entries include: Uber’s Travis Kalanick in Showtime’s Super Pumped; Theranos’ Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout; and WeWork’s Adam and Rebekah Neumann in Apple TV’s We Crashed.

Some of these portrayals you could chalk up to Hollywood jealousy over the emergence of another California epicenter of innovation. But those worlds merged long ago. Many of the companies that released these movies are disrupters, themselves — none more than Netflix, distributor of Glass Onion. The streamer was cajoled into releasing Johnson’s sequel more widely in theaters than any previous Netflix release. Estimates suggested the film collected some $15 million over opening weekend, the old-fashioned way, but Netflix executives have said they don’t plan to make a habit of such theatrical rollouts.

And the distrust goes deeper than any Hollywood-Silicon Valley rivalry. A recent Quinnipiac poll found that 70% of Americans think social media companies do more harm than good. Tech leaders like Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg have at times been seen favorably by only 1 in 5 Americans.

As characters, tech bros — hoodie-wearing descendants of the mad scientist — have formed an archetype: Masters of the universe whose hubris leads to catastrophe, social media savants who can’t manage their personal relationships. Whether their visions of the future pan out or not, we end up living in their world, either way. They’re villains who see themselves as heroes.

“In my mind, he’s really the most dangerous human being around,” Rylance says of his Peter Isherwell. “He believes that we can dominate our way out of any problem that nature hands us. I think that’s the same kind of thinking that’s got us into the problem we’re in now, trying to dominate each other and dominate all the life we’re intimately connected to and dependent on.”

Glass Onion, nominated for best adapted screenplay, presents a new escalation in tech mogul mockery. Norton’s eminently punchable CEO, with a name so nearly “Bro,” is enormously rich, powerful, and, considering that he’s working on a volatile new energy source, dangerous. But Bron is also, as Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc eventually deduces, an idiot. “A vainglorious buffoon,” Blanc says.

In Johnson’s film, the tech bro/emperor bro truly has no clothes. He’s just skating by with lies, deceit, and a bunch of not-real words like “predefinite” and “inbreathiate.”

Even though Johnson wrote Glass Onion&nbsp;well before Elon Musk’s shambolic Twitter takeover, the movie’s release seemed almost preternaturally timed to coincide with it. The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive was only one of Johnson’s real-world inspirations, some took Bron as a direct Musk parody. In a widely read Twitter thread, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro said Johnson was dramatising Musk as “a bad and stupid man,” which he called “an incredibly stupid theory, since Musk is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in human history.” He added: “How many rockets has Johnson launched lately?”

Musk, himself, hasn’t publicly commented on Glass Onion, but he has previously had numerous gripes with Hollywood, including its depictions of guys like him. “Hollywood refuses to write even one story about an actual company startup where the CEO isn’t a dweeb and/or evil,” Musk tweeted last year.

Musk will soon enough get his own movie. The Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney on Monday announced his several months into work on Musk, which producers promise will offer a “definitive and unvarnished examination” of the tech entrepreneur.

At the same time as the tech bro’s supervillainy supremacy has emerged, some movies have sought not to lampoon Big Tech but to imbibe some of the digital world’s infinite expanse. Phil Lord, who with Christopher Miller has produced The Mitchells vs the Machines&nbsp;and the multiverse-splitting Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, says the internet has profoundly influenced their approach to film.

“We, legacy media, are responding in maybe subconscious ways to new media,” says Lord. “We’re all just trying to figure out how to live in the new world. It’s changing people’s behavior. It changes the way we find and experience love. It changes the way we live. Of course, the stories we tell and how we tell them are going to change as well and reflect that. Into the Spider-Verse certainly reflects having a lot of content from every era in your brain all at the same time.”

The best-picture favorite Everything Everywhere All at Once, too, is reflective of our multi-screen, media-bombarded lives. Writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, whose film is up for a leading 11 Oscars, say they wanted to channel the confusion and heartache of living in the everything-everywhere existence that tech moguls like Miles Bron helped create.

“The reason why we made the movie is because that’s what modern life feels like,” says Kwan.

So even though Miles Bron won’t go home with an Academy Award on Sunday, he still wins, in a way. It’s his world. We’re all just living in it.

Twitter services were hit by a technical snag for less than an hour&nbsp;on Monday as thousands of users reported facing difficulty in accessing links from the social media platform to the websites.

According to Internet observatory NetBlocks, the problem was affecting video content and image too. As per Downdetector, more than 8,000 people had reported facing similar issues on Elon Musk's microblogging platform in the United States.

According to the complaints made by the users, on clicking the links a message popped up which read, "Your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint, please see https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-api for more information".

Hence, the users were unable to follow the links shared on the site. Links also appeared as blank blocks of colour.

Twitter's specialised service for following tweets, Tweetdeck, also appeared to be broken because of the same technical snag. According to the users, the links remained broken and the app went entirely blank.

Internet observatory NetBlocks Director Alp Toker said, "Error messages supplied by Twitter's link-sharing platform and internal API point to problems with the platform's microservices, which are having a knock-on effect on other aspects of the service.”

"This suggests Twitter has not been effectively testing its updates before pushing them to the public,” he added.

Meanwhile, reacting to the broken links, Twitter said, "We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences. We're working on this now and will share an update when it's fixed.”

Owner Musk tweeted, "This platform is so brittle (sigh). Will be fixed shortly."

Netizens share memes mocking Elon Musk

Soon after, netizens flooded Twitter with memes mocking Elon Musk for the technical glitch.

“Links don't work on Twitter right now, which is so strange because Elon Musk had that meeting about being super good at doing computer code and he had all kinds of arrows and flowcharts on white boards and everything", a user said.

“Did Elon just break all links on Twitter…”, another user tweeted. “Twitter's own website is rejecting native API calls. things are going great under Elon,” posted a user.&nbsp;

In recent weeks, Twitter has been changing its API so as to generate more money, as per the reports. The company had announced in a tweet on February 26 that a new service would be “coming very soon” from its account focused on developers.

Twitter chief Elon Musk, on early Sunday (March 6) confirmed that users on the microblogging platform can send “longform tweets” with up to 10,000 characters. While responding to a user’s question, Musk also said that the feature would be rolled out “soon” without giving any specific timeline.&nbsp;

The announcement was made after Youtuber and Twitter user @ThePrimeagen asked Musk, “The dev community and I were wondering if you could add code blocks to tweets?” To which the microblogging platform’s CEO said, “As an attachment? How many chars? We are extending longform tweets to 10k soon.” As of now, a regular Twitter user is allowed to post tweets with only 280 characters.&nbsp;

While Musk did not confirm if this feature will be rolled out for all users or only those with a Twitter Blue subscription, however, many suspect it would be the latter. The microblogging platform first introduced character-length expansion in 2017 when it doubled the 140-character limit to 280.&nbsp;

This also comes a day after the Twitter CEO also announced that he is “aiming to roll out ability to reply to individual DMs, use any reaction emoji &amp; encryption later this month.” Meanwhile, the microblogging platform’s Community Notes page, in late February had also said that the users will be notified if a Community Note appears on a Tweet to which they have responded, liked, or retweeted.&nbsp;

“Starting today, you’ll get a heads up if a Community Note starts showing on a Tweet you’ve replied to, Liked or Retweeted. This helps give people extra context that they might otherwise miss,” read the tweet.&nbsp;
