The EU's top tech enforcer warned Elon Musk that Twitter must have enough resources to moderate dangerous content by August 25 or risk being in violation of the bloc's landmark rules to rein in big tech.

Elon Musk is eager to bring his Starlink satellite broadband to India, but the world's richest man faces strong resistance from Mukesh Ambani, Asia's wealthiest, who runs Indian telecom giant Reliance Jio.

Following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US on Tuesday, Musk said he was keen to launch Starlink in India which "can be incredibly helpful" in remote villages that have no internet or lack high-speed services.

What he didn't talk about is how Starlink is at odds with Ambani's Reliance over the government's distribution of satellite broadband spectrum, setting the stage for a battle between two of the world's richest men for satellite services in the world's most populous nation.

Starlink is lobbying India to not auction the spectrum but just assign licences in line with a global trend, saying it is a natural resource that should be shared by companies. An auction may impose geographical restrictions that will raise costs, it said in company letters made public by the Indian government this month.

Reliance disagrees and has called for an auction in a public submission to the government, saying foreign satellite service providers could offer voice and data services and compete with traditional telecom players, and so there must be an auction to achieve a level playing field.

In signs of deepening rivalry, an industry source with direct knowledge said Reliance will continue nudging the Indian government to auction satellite spectrum, and not agree to the demands of foreign companies.

The stakes are high for Musk. His push comes after a 2021 attempt to launch Starlink in India ran afoul of local regulators for taking bookings without a license, and just as he is in talks with India to set up a Tesla factory.

For Ambani, keeping foreign competition at bay in satellite broadband will be another shot in the arm - his Reliance Jio already has 439 million telecom users, making it the market leader, and 8 million wired broadband connections, a 25% market share.

Starlink's view on auctions is shared by Amazon's satellite internet initiative, Project Kuiper, and the British government-backed OneWeb.

Amazon declined comment. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, OneWeb and Starlink parent SpaceX, did not respond. Asked for comment, Reliance referred Reuters to its own and Starlink's government submissions.

AUCTION VS LICENSING

Of the 64 responses from companies, industry groups and others to India's public consultation on satellite spectrum, 48 favoured licensing, 12 voted for an auction, with the rest neutral, according to India's Koan Advisory.

A second industry source said Reliance believes opening the floodgates to established foreign players like Starlink without an auction will allow them "runaway success" just like Amazon, which will hurt Indian firms and create an uneven playing field.

Ambani's Reliance Retail has locked horns with Amazon, but lags the U.S. rival in market share in the e-commerce space.

Deloitte says India's satellite broadband service market will grow 36% a year to reach $1.9 billion by 2030.

Starlink says it is already authorised in 84 administrations around the world and has 1.5 million active users of its low-latency broadband services. Amazon plans to launch its first set of satellites in 2024.

Foreign satellite internet firms are concerned an auction by India will raise the likelihood of other nations following suit, increasing costs and investments, said one of the sources, an Indian adviser to a foreign company.

If India decides on holding an auction, OneWeb will find it difficult to do business in the country, said an industry source. Starlink is waiting for clarity on India's spectrum allocation before firming up its commercial strategy, another source said.

Tim Farrar, an analyst at US-based consultancy TMF Associates, said it would set a "bad precedent" for Starlink to pay a substantial auction amount in India when it is obtaining low-cost licenses in many other countries.

"I'd expect Starlink to make high-profile free offers elsewhere in order to try and demonstrate what India could be missing out on," he said.

UFC boss Dana White confirms Musk, Zuckerberg are 'dead serious' about cage fight

The world’s richest person and top entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has described ESG, or the Environment, Social and Governance movement, as the “Devil.” An article published recently by The Washington Free Beacon had the following caption: “From S&P Global to the London Stock Exchange, tobacco companies are crushing Tesla in the ESG ratings. “How could cigarettes, which kill over eight million a year, be deemed a more ethical investment than electric cars?”

To this, Musk responded: “(This is) Why ESG is the devil…”

While ESG ratings are intended to assess a company's sustainability and ethical practices, Musk's behaviour and statements have often put him at odds with ESG frameworks, causing controversy and raising questions about the effectiveness of these ratings. In this article, we will explore Elon Musk's problems with ESG ratings and the debates surrounding his stance.

How does Tesla rate on ESG?

Last year, the Tesla, SpaceX founder said ESG was a “scam” after his electric car company was ejected from the S&P 500 ESG index after only a year.

Musk’s criticism of ESG stems from the fact that tobacco firms tend to receive higher ESG ratings than electric-vehicle maker Tesla. Musk highlighted a report that showed Tesla scoring only 37 out of 100 in S&P Global’s latest ESG rankings, while tobacco giant Philip Morris scored 84. The London Stock Exchange gave British American Tobacco an ESG rating of 94, and Tesla a more middling 65.

MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) that provides stock indexes, portfolio risk and performance analytics, and governance tools to institutional investors and hedge funds has been downgrading Tesla's ESG rating over time. In 2017, MSCI gave Tesla an ESG rating of "AAA," but it reduced the rating to "AA" in 2018 and "A" in 2022.

The reasons for the downgrades are:

• Labour management: MSCI found that Tesla has had a number of problems with labour relations, including allegations of racial discrimination and poor working conditions.
• Corporate governance: MSCI found that Tesla has a weak corporate governance structure, with a lack of independent directors and a CEO who has too much power.

ESG data can be noisy, which can lead to different rating agencies assigning different scores to the same company. Musk has argued that these ESG scores are flawed and do not accurately reflect Tesla's social contributions.

However, the ESG scores for Tesla from the above-mentioned agencies highlight some common challenges facing the company.

ALSO READ| Elon Musk responds to Jack Dorsey’s claim that India threatened to boot out Twitter

The "S" in ESG

Tesla is a leader in the electric vehicle industry, but it has fallen behind its peers when it comes to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. ESG is a broad framework that assesses a company's performance on a variety of factors, including environmental impact, social responsibility, and corporate governance.

Tesla has been praised for its environmental impact, as its electric vehicles produce zero emissions. However, the company has been criticised for its lack of diversity and its treatment of employees. Tesla's board of directors is overwhelmingly white and male, and the company has been accused of unfair labour practices.

In addition, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, has been criticised for his support of cryptocurrencies, which have a significant carbon footprint. Musk has also been accused of making offensive remarks about women and minorities.
These criticisms have led some ESG rating agencies to downgrade Tesla's ESG score. While Tesla is a leader in the electric vehicle industry, it needs to do more to address its ESG shortcomings if it wants to be a leader in the 21st century.

ESG is not just about the environment. It is also about social responsibility and corporate governance. Tesla needs to recognise that ESG is a holistic framework. It cannot focus on just one factor, such as the environment, and ignore the others. If Tesla wants to be a leader for the 21st century, it needs to do more than just make electric cars. It needs to be a good company for all of its stakeholders.

One can’t live in a vacuum of just environmental or social issues – they are all intertwined.

ESG vs sustainability vs impact

Some, including Musk, argue that the ratings should recognise and reward companies that actively support the well-being of the planet and society. On the other hand, entities like S&P, who produce these ratings, maintain that the purpose of the ratings is to indicate the extent to which a company's stock faces risks from ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors. This is why companies like Exxon Mobil, which contribute significantly to climate change, are permitted to be part of an ESG index if they can demonstrate efforts to reduce that risk.

ESG and sustainability are distinct yet interconnected concepts. ESG serves as a framework for evaluating an organisation's legitimacy and competitiveness, focusing on performance assessment. Sustainability, on the other hand, operates as a management paradigm aimed at ensuring an organisation's long-term viability or "the business of staying in business."

ESG primarily centres around evaluating the risks and opportunities posed to companies by evolving social, environmental, and governance factors. In the United States, it primarily considers the impact of the world on the company, rather than the impact of the company on the planet.
.
Effectively, Musk is conflating ESG with sustainability and impact. The issue with Musk's claims is that ESG is not concerned with impact but rather with operations. It provides a lens through which to assess how global events might jeopardise a company's enterprise value, rather than focusing on how a company itself may pose risks to the world. Hypothetically, if there were an S&P 500 Impact Index, Tesla would likely be included while Exxon Mobil would not. However, this does not mean that Tesla can automatically claim compliance with ESG principles.

Therefore, Musk is both correct and mistaken. Tesla has undoubtedly made significant contributions to addressing climate change, but ESG does not necessarily measure the aspects that Musk and others believe it does.

In the context of investors, instead of relying solely on generic ESG ratings, it would be advisable for them to first identify the specific ESG considerations that are most important to them and then select an investment strategy accordingly.

The agency, which describes itself as the world’s first government agency dedicated to keeping people safer online, said Thursday that it received more complaints about Twitter in the past 12 months than any other platform and received an increasing number of reports of serious online abuse since Musk took over the company in October last year.

Twitter has 28 days to respond

The eSafety Commission’s boss, Julie Inman Grant, said she sent a notice to Twitter on Wednesday with 36 detailed questions on how the platform’s policies about hateful conduct are enforced.

If Twitter does not respond with factual and truthful responses to all questions within 28 days, an Australian judge could fine the company up to 700,000 Australian dollars ($476,000) for every day of delay, said Inman Grant.

“The whole idea of the basic online safety expectations is that global companies like Twitter are enforcing their own policies … and that they’ve got people and technology to keep their platforms safe,” Inman Grant said.

Australia’s internet safety watchdog has given Twitter an ultimatum of 28 days to clean up “toxicity and hate” on its platform, threatening to fine the company if it fails to comply.

Australia’s internet safety watchdog has given Twitter an ultimatum of 28 days to clean up “toxicity and hate” on its platform, threatening to fine the company if it fails to comply. The watchdog has issued a legal notice to Twitter demanding an explanation of what the social media giant is doing to tackle the surge in online hate since Elon Musk took over the platform. Australian watchdog gives Twitter 28 days to tackle online hate

The greatest Pay-Per-View (PPV) fight of the century might be in the works. If one is to go by the social media posts of Twitter boss Elon Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the duo might soon lock horns, that too in a cage match fight.

The chain of events started on Tuesday when Musk, akin to his routine social media behaviour, commented on a tweet about Facebook potentially developing a Twitter competitor.

“I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options. At least it will be ‘sane’. Was worried there for a moment,” Musk tweeted with a crying-laughing emoji.

A Twitter user replied to Musk saying he should be careful of Zuckerberg since the Facebook boss had been practising jiu-jitsu, a Brazilian martial art form.

“I’m up for a cage match if he is lol,” replied a cavalier Musk.

Though one would be forgiven to think it was all banter from Musk, Zuckerberg seemed game for the match. He posted a screenshot of Musk's tweet on his Instagram story, saying, "send me location".

Afterwards, another netizen posted Zuckerberg's Instagram story screenshot to which Musk replied, “If this is for real, I will do it.”

Tech outlet The Verge reached out to Meta for a response which said, “The story speaks for itself". Musk also seemingly confirmed the fight by sharing the location of the fight as "Vegas Octagon".

In a subsequent tweet, Musk joked saying, "I have this great move that I call “The Walrus”, where I just lie on top of my opponent & do nothing."

Ever since the exchange, netizens are having a blast at the prospect of the two most prominent tech entrepreneurs and billionaires of the world going toe-to-toe in an octagon match.

Zuckerberg: A Jiu-Jitsu champ

Though it is unclear how proficient Musk is with his fists, his potential rival Zuckerberg is no greenhorn. In May, Zuckerberg won a gold and silver medal at his very first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Redwood City, California.

The billionaire CEO took to Instagram where he talked about competing in the Jiu-Jitsu tournament and winning medals for his team.

“Competed in my first jiu jitsu tournament and won some medals for the Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu team. Thanks to @davecamarillo @khaiwu @intense0ne for training me!" Zuckerberg wrote in the post.

Apart from martial arts, Zuckerberg is also an avid surfer. He routinely posts videos of himself surfing the dangerous waves.

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino's late fatherhood has not gone down well with comedian Chelsea Handler who has voiced a call to action against the 'horny old men' of the world. The former late-night talk show host chastised Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin and Elon Musk for "spreading their seed". "There's a new epidemic sweeping the country, and no, it's not another virus," Handler said in an Instagram clip. "It's worse – horny old men who won't stop spreading their seed." Handler added, "Don't even get me started on these four horny old men who have never met a broken condom they didn't like." In recent months, De Niro, 79, and Pacino, 83 have become fathers to newborns with their respective partners. During her rant, Handler shared a photo collage of Baldwin, Pacino, De Niro and Musk to accompany her sharp words. Pacino, 83, and his 29-year-old girlfriend, Noor Alfallah, recently welcomed their first child into the world. "Al Pacino and Noor Alfallah have welcomed a son, named Roman Pacino," Pacino's representative confirmed in a statement to the media on Thursday. France requests Musk to set up Tesla factory in country, weeks after threatening to ban Twitter

Tesla's stock market journey has captured the attention of investors and analysts alike. after an awe-inspiring 13-day winning streak, Tesla's remarkable rally finally met its match, ending on Wednesday. During this unprecedented run, tesla's stock skyrocketed, adding over $200 billion to its market value, a feat that few could have predicted.

Tesla’s impressive 13-day run comes to a halt

Tesla's stock market rally, which lasted an impressive 13 days, finally came to a halt on Wednesday, a Reuters report said.

During this historic winning streak, the US automaker's shares soared to new heights and added over $200 billion. While the rally significantly boosted the company's worth, it also ignited discussions about its stratospheric valuation and comparisons to other automakers.

Tesla's electrifying rally captivated investors and analysts alike as the company's shares experienced an extraordinary surge, skyrocketing by more than 40 percent. This surge resulted in a staggering $240 billion increase in its market capitalization, surpassing the entire value of Toyota, the second-most valuable automaker globally. With a market value of approximately $814 billion, Tesla's stock price far exceeded the predictions of Wall Street analysts, who had projected a median target of $200, as per Refinitiv data cited by Reuters.

One key catalyst behind Tesla's unprecedented rally was the announcement of legacy U.S. automakers, Ford and General Motors, adopting Tesla's charging system, the North America Charging Standard (NACS). This strategic move effectively established the NACS as the dominant charging infrastructure for 60 percent of the U.S. electric vehicle market, giving Tesla a significant edge over its competitors. While alternative charging systems exist globally, the partnership with Ford and GM solidified Tesla's dominance in the American market.

Valuation and Comparisons

Tesla's stratospheric price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has raised eyebrows, as it far surpasses that of other automakers. For the uninitiated, the ratio is used for valuing a company. The ratio measures its current share price to its earnings per share (EPS).

With a forward P/E ratio of approximately 62, Tesla finds itself just below Amazon's ratio of 63.7. In contrast, traditional automakers Ford and GM boast significantly lower P/E ratios of 8.2 and 5.6, respectively, as reported by Reuters. Analysts have drawn parallels between Tesla's recent surge and the remarkable trajectory of Amazon, a company that defied investor expectations for years.

Tesla's impressive rally carried consequences for short sellers, who suffered mark-to-market losses of over $7 billion during the 13-day period. This added to their year-to-date losses, which reached nearly $12.7 billion, according to S3 Partners, cited by Reuters. The rollercoaster ride experienced by Tesla's stock price serves as a reminder of the inherent volatility in the market and the potential risks involved in betting against the company.

Valuation and Comparisons Tesla's stratospheric price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has raised eyebrows, as it far surpasses that of other automakers. Elon Musk-led Tesla has added more than $200 billion to its market valuation in an 11-day run. Tesla this week has had some of its longest-ever winning streak on the Wall Street. Elon Musk's Tesla's valuation boom: The factors at play According to Bespoke Investment Group cited by Bloomberg, Tesla has been a "wild stock" over the years. Tesla shares jumped as much as 7.5 per cent to $252.42 Friday, bringing this year’s surge to 103 per cent. This week’s 17 per cent advance so far is set to be the best since January. Big meet to decide Tesla's road to New Delhi The valuation boom comes after General Motors announced that it will adapt its EVs to Tesla's Superchargers. The development followed a similar move from the Ford Motors, making it sort of an industry standard in the United States. Also watch | Elon Musk launches new AI startup to compete with OpenAI × "More people buying EVs (whether they be GM or Ford for that matter) increases the likelihood that they buy Teslas," RBC Capital Markets analyst Tom Narayan wrote in a note on Thursday, Bloomberg reported. "A rising tide lifts all boats and if consumers see their neighbour having an EV, they are more likely to buy one themselves - and this increases the chances they buy a Tesla." Tesla's rich valuation: AI boom or self-driving technology? According to Cathie Wood, Chief Executive Officer of ARK Investment Management, the Artificial Intelligence could play most important role in Tesla's future stock boom. It could reportedly help its stock price to about $2,000 in 2027. Without that, Wood expects the stock to be worth only about $400. About self-driving technology, Tesla CEO Elon Musk himself suggested last year that the company’s value was almost fully dependent on cracking the code for self-driving. "That really is the difference between Tesla being worth a lot of money and being worth basically zero," Musk said in an interview in June 2022. Twitter to now pay verified content creators for ads in replies, says Elon Musk

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is preparing to launch a new standalone app in response to Twitter. The app, internally known as Project 92 and rumoured to be named Threads after its release, will be launched through Instagram. During a company-wide meeting led by Meta's chief product officer, Chris Cox, the upcoming app was demonstrated as "our response to Twitter."

Cox took a jab at Twitter CEO Elon Musk, stating that the rival app would be "sanely run" and emphasised the importance of creating a platform that is trustworthy and reliable.

High-profile users already committed to using the app: Meta

The goal of the app, which has been in development since January, is to provide creators with a stable place to build and grow their audiences, while prioritising safety, ease of use, and reliability.

In contrast, Twitter has faced controversy and challenges since Musk bought it and took over as CEO, including a significant drop in revenue amid reports of advertisers abandoning the platform due to issues such as hate speech content.
