7.3 magnitude earthquake jolts Japan, tsunami warning issued

At least four people have been killed and 94 injured after a powerful earthquake hit northeastern Japan. The 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Fukushima region at a depth of 60km just before midnight on Wednesday.

At least four killed after 7.3-magnitude earthquake hits Northeast Japan

Seven people died and dozens more were injured when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia's Sumatra island on Friday, with residents shuttling loved ones to safety as buildings crumbled around them.

The quake came just minutes after a less violent tremor, as terrified residents had begun evacuating their houses.

"We all fled our home (after the first quake)," Yudi Prama Agustino, 36, told AFP. "I have a one-year-old baby, so in panic, I pushed the stroller out of the house."

The quake hit the island's north at a depth of 12 kilometres (7.5 miles), about 70 km from the town of Bukittinggi in West Sumatra province, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Agustino's hometown in Agam district is another 40 km from Bukittinggi.

"I noticed there was an earthquake because my kids' toys fell over. I panicked because my in-laws were also in the house and they are quite old and sick," Agustino said of the first tremor that was recorded at 5.0 by the USGS.

"Once we were outside, a much stronger 6.2 quake happened and everybody panicked," he added.

Seven people died and 85 were injured in West Pasaman and Pasaman -- about 17 and 20 km respectively from the epicentre -- according to Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

At least 5,000 people in the two districts have been evacuated.

Indonesian meteorological agency BMKG warned people to stay away from slopes over fears of landslides at the peak of the rainy season.

The quake was felt in the neighbouring provinces of Riau and North Sumatra and as far away as Malaysia and Singapore. No tsunami warning has been issued.

Collapsed homes

Images shared with AFP from Pasaman city, near the quake's epicentre, showed partially collapsed houses with bricks lying on the ground and holes in the walls.

The town mayor's residence also suffered damage, with shattered glass all over the floor, according to BNPB head Suharyanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Television footage showed patients being wheeled out of a hospital in West Sumatra's provincial capital Padang.

Alim Bazar, head of Pasaman's disaster mitigation agency, told AFP some buildings suffered cracks.

"The mayor called and ordered that all second and third floors in every building should be vacated," he said.

Irpanda, a resident of Pasaman, told Metro TV he felt both the first and second tremors.

"At first, the quake only lasted for a few seconds. People fled their homes and buildings nearby were swaying," he said.

"But then another quake happened and it was so strong. More people fled their houses," he said, adding patients at a local hospital were also moved outside.

Singapore, Malaysia tremors

Tremors were also felt in Singapore, witnesses and police said.

"Earth tremors were... felt in certain parts of Singapore at about 9:45 am," the police said in a statement.

The police and emergency services "have received several calls from the public reporting these tremors", they added.

One Singapore resident told AFP he felt a slight shake at home that left him dizzy, while state broadcaster CNA showed a video of ceiling lamps swaying at a highrise apartment.

Malaysia's meteorological department said in a tweet that "vibrations" were felt on the peninsula's western states.

"Wow #earthquake in Kuala Lumpur," wrote one Twitter user. "Building is swaying!!"

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", causing it to experience frequent earthquakes.

In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude quake struck the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 people throughout the region, including about 170,000 in Indonesia.

Japan is a country known for being seismically very active. The citizens suffer from earthquakes many times in a short span of few years. Now, scientists think an underground rocky mass the size of a mountain may be the cause of huge earthquakes in southern Japan.

Researchers have found the structure, called Kumano Pluton is beneath the coast of southern Japan. 3D visualisation of the Kumano Pluton has revealed that tectonic energy from megaquakes seems to be diverted to several points along its side.

"We cannot predict exactly when, where, or how large future earthquakes will be, but by combining our model with monitoring data, we can begin estimating near-future processes," says geophysicist Shuichi Kodaira of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology in Japan. He was quoted by University of Texas at Austin website.

To understand true extent of the Kumano Pluton, scientists examined 20 years of seismic data. The painstaking work included millions of recordings from Japan network of seismic sensors.

The biggest ever seismic data set was then fed to LoneStar5 supercomputer at the university.

Kumano Pluton is very dense and rigid and researchers think it contributes to the tectonic activity that causes earthquakes

Huge earthquakes of more than 8 intensity have been observed to have originated on the flanks of the Pluton in 1944 and 1946.

A shallow earthquake hit western Afghanistan, killing at least 26 people, according to local media reports.

A shallow quake of magnitude 5.3 struck the strife-torn region on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey.

According to officials, the victims reportedly died when roofs of their houses collapsed in Qadis district in the western province of Badghis. It is estimated that more than 1,000 houses have been damaged.

“Five women and four children are among the 26 people killed in the earthquake,” spokesman for the province Baz Mohammad Sarwary told AFP, adding that four were injured.

There were also reports of major destruction in Muqr district in the province, however details of casualties are not yet known, Sarwary said.

The majority of the homes and buildings built in impoverished Afghanistan are of poor quality. Hence, whenever an earthquake occurs, it leaves behind a trail of destruction and casualties.

Qadis is already reeling from a devastating drought, and has been receiving international aid for the past 20 years.

In 2015, nearly 280 people were killed when a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake centred in the mountain range ripped across South Asia, with the bulk of the deaths in Pakistan.

In that disaster, 12 young Afghan girls were crushed to death in a stampede as they tried to flee their shaking school building.

Afghanistan is already in the grip of a humanitarian disaster, worsened by the Taliban takeover of the country in August when Western countries froze international aid and access to assets held abroad.

The United Nations estimates nearly 23 million Afghans — about 55 per cent of the population — are facing extreme levels of hunger, with nearly 9 million at risk of famine as winter takes hold.

Earthquake jolts western Afghanistan, 26 people killed, says official

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has said that a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Java island on Friday, causing buildings in Jakarta to shake.

At 0905 GMT, the quake struck to the island's southwest at a depth of 37 kilometres (23 miles).

The tremor was felt in the capital and rattled buildings. No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no early reports of injuries or damage.

Following the quake, some Jakarta residents were evacuated from their homes, and hundreds waited outside.

People in the Kalibata City apartment complex, in the capital's south, evacuated their homes as the earthquake struck, according to Nur Latifa, a 25-year-old resident.

"I was working from home and noticed my laptop was moving... then the door started to rattle and hanging objects started to make a noise," Latifa said.

"I fetched my roommate, who was in the bathroom, and we fled the apartment. Outside, people were rushing towards the emergency stairs. "

Due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of severe seismic activity where tectonic plates meet that runs from Japan to Southeast Asia and throughout the Pacific basin, Indonesia experiences numerous quakes.

On Monday, a strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake jolted the northern California coast. The disaster, which usually spurs panic among people, didn’t even faze the residents.

No major casualty, or injury was reported, and the day passed off with minimal panic.

The residents knew well in advance about the calamity that was to strike. This is thanks to America’s first public earthquake-warning app that gives “seconds to prepare”.

The app, known as ShakeAlert, is managed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) which sends an SMS alert to people seconds before an earthquake of 5.0 magnitude or larger is about to shake their location.

After a magnitude 7.3 undersea earthquake struck off Flores Island on Tuesday, Indonesia removed a tsunami warning, generating concern in a location prone to deadly quakes but seemingly causing minimal damage or casualties.

The quake struck at a depth of 18.5 kilometres under the sea, 112 kilometres north of Maumere, the second-largest town on the island in East Nusa Tenggara province, with a population of 85,000 people, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, as well as Indonesia's agency, removed the tsunami warning hours after the quake.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said residents in the area felt the earthquake strongly.

People fleeing from buildings shook by the tremors were visible on television and other media platforms.

Earthquakes are usually regarded with fear and though technological and scientific advances have enabled us to study the natural phenomenon in greater detail, there is still no way to predict earthquake with pinpoint precision. Major earthquakes can cause devastation to cities and earthquakes on the ocean floor can trigger tsunamis which can cause damage in even greater area.

But scientists have found that earthquakes have a positive effect as well. It has been found that earthquakes help growth of trees. Trees growing on flat ground are benefitted more than those growing on slopes like mountainsides.

Result of the study has been reported in journal JGR Biogeosciences.

The researchers led by hydrologist Christian Mohr from the University of Potsdam in Germany studied Pinus radiata trees in Chile in the aftermath of a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Maule region in Chile in 2010. Trees growing in valleys as well as on mountainsides were studied.

Tree core samples taken in 2014 showed that trees growing in valleys showed temporary increase in growth. The increase in growth was less among trees growing on mountainsides.

The researchers are ascribing the effect to altered grondwater streams in the aftermath of the earthquake.

World tsunami day is definitely not a moment to celebrate. It's a grim reminder of destruction a mere wave of water can cause. It's not just a wave though, these are gigantic torrents of doom often triggered by Earthquakes. United Nations has designated November 5 as World tsunami day to remind us how feeble we are when nature turns violent. It also reminds us to be better prepared for the carnage by developing new early warning systems and evacuation of people from the danger zones

December 26, 2004: Sumatra, Indonesia

This was the worst tsunami in the world. It was triggered by a 9.1 earthquake hitting coast of Sumatra. The resulting tsunami was 1300 km long and it affected 14 countries. Waves reached the height of 50 metres. The tsunami caused death of 230,000 people.

July 9, 1958: Lituya Bay

Earthquake of upto 8.3 intensity triggered the tsunami and caused displacement of 90 million tonnes of water in Lituya Bay in Alaska. The earthquake that triggered the tsunami took place in the Fairweather Fault

The tsunami was so powerful that its impact was heard even 80 km away.

November 1, 1755: Portugal

This tsunami was triggered by a magnitude 8.5 earthquake. This caused three huge waves. The waves hit towns in Portugal and southern Spain. It is estimated that 60,000 people were killed in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

1964: Alaska Good Friday tsunami

This tsunami was triggered by strongest earthquake on record in North America. The 9.2 magnitude earthquake was even recorded on instruments that were 1200 miles away.

The earthquake caused series of tsunamis caused widespread destruction and gave little time for local population to prepare.

March 11, 2011: Fukushima disaster

The earthquake that caused worst nuclear incident since Chernobyl took place on this day. The earthquake caused 14 metre-high waves that flowed over Fukushima nuclear plant's seawall and caused problems in the plant's cooling system. This caused three nuclear meltdowns and hydrogen explosion. The effect of Fukushima disaster are still felt today.

6.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan; no casualties

A strong earthquake struck northeastern Taiwan on Sunday, with residents reporting violent shaking in the capital Taipei but there were no immediate reports of widespread damage.

Taiwan's central weather bureau said the quake was of magnitude 6.5, the biggest on the island this year, while the US Geological Survey gave a lower figure of 6.2.

It hit northeastern Yilan county at 1:11 pm (0511 GMT) at a depth of 67 kilometres (42 miles).

An AFP reporter who lives in Yilan said the shaking seemed to last about 30 seconds.

"The walls of the house were shaking, both sideways and up and down, it felt quite strong," the reporter said.

There was no damage in his neighbourhood.

The main quake was followed by a 5.4-magnitude aftershock and Taipei's MRT metro system shut down as a precaution for a little under an hour before service resumed.

Tom Parker, a British illustrator who lives in Taipei, said he was riding the subway when the quake hit.

"First time I've felt a quake on the MRT. Like a tame rollercoaster," he tweeted, adding he and other commuters were told to shelter in place in the station.

Many others reported the tremor on social media.

"I was scared to death, I screamed in my room," Facebook user Yu Ting wrote.

"This earthquake is really big, glass has shattered in my living room."

Some grocery stores reported food and other goods were thrown from shelves by the shaking.

Authorities said they did not expect widespread damage because the quake was not a shallow one.

"The public don't have to be too worried," said Chen Kuo-chang, head of the central weather bureau’s seismological centre.

"The quake is deep and its intensity is not as big it could have caused unpredictable damage if it were a shallow one," he added.

Taiwan’s emergency operations centre reported one injury, a woman hit by falling rocks. Her friends were carrying her down a mountain in eastern Hualien county.

Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.

Some earthquakes of this magnitude can prove deadly, although much depends on where the quake strikes and at what depth.

Hualien, a scenic tourist hotspot, was struck by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake in 2018 that killed 17 people and injured nearly 300.

In September 1999, a 7.6-magnitude quake killed around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island's history.

However, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck in December 2020 in Yilan with no major damage or injuries reported.

Incumbent rulers are often hated by citizens in most countries but New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been an exception so far. From working even when pregnant to successfully managing pandemic situation in the country, she is often hailed as an ideal political leader.

She is in news again for continuing her live speech even when an earthquake interrupted the proceedings. She paused briefly, but then continued her address to the nation on coronavirus.

Wellington and nearby areas were shaken by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake with the epicentre 35 km (21.75 miles) south-west of Taumarunui in central North Island, according to Geonet. While the shaking was felt widely there were no reports of damages or injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 5.6.

Ardern briefly grabbed her podium when the shaking began, smiled, and told a reporter asking a question: "Sorry, a slight distraction ... would you mind repeating that question?"

She told reporters at the end of the event that Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson, who was also on the stage, was not entirely convinced it was an earthquake and wondered if it was just strong wind blowing.

New Zealand often experiences weak to medium intensity earthquakes as it lies on the seismically active "Ring of Fire", a 40,000-km (24,855-mile) arc of volcanoes and ocean trenches girdling much of the Pacific Ocean.

The city of Christchurch is still recovering from a 6.3 magnitude quake in 2011 that killed 185 people.

In 2016, a 7.8 magnitude tremor hit the South Island town of Kaikoura, killing two and causing billions of dollars worth of damage, including in the capital Wellington, which is on North Island.

Ardern briefly grabbed her podium when the shaking began, smiled, and told a reporter asking a question: "Sorry, a slight distraction ... would you mind repeating that question?" She told reporters at the end of the event that Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson, who was also on the stage, was not entirely convinced it was an earthquake and wondered if it was just strong wind blowing. Two people died when the quake triggered a landslide that buried their house in Bangli regency while another person was killed in the port town of Karangasem, officials said.

The death toll was not expected to rise, they added.

"The quake was felt strongly for five seconds," said disaster agency spokesman Abdul Muhari.

"People were panicking and ran from their houses when the quake hit."

The tremor's epicentre was far from the main tourist hub in Bali, which is slowly reopening to international visitors after a pandemic shutdown.

Australia hit by a rare magnitude 6.0 earthquake

Melbourne was struck by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake on Wednesday. This was one of Australia's biggest quakes on record that caused damage to building in Melbourne and sent tremors throughout neighbouring states.

The epicentre was near Mansfield, a rural town in the state of Victoria. The town is about 200 km northeast of Melbourne. The epicentre was at a depth of 10 km. An aftershock of intensity 4.0 was recorded.

Images and videos on social media showed rubble blocking one of Melbourne's main streets. People in the northern parts of the city said that they were without power.

The earthquake was felt as far as Adelaide and Sydney. However, there were no immediate reports of damage and injuries outside Melbourne.

More than half of Australia's 25 million population lives in the southeast of the country from Adelaide to Melbourne to Sydney.

"We have had no reports of serious injuries, or worse, and that is very good news and we hope that good news will continue," Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Washington.

"It can be a very disturbing event, an earthquake of this nature. They are very rare events in Australia and as a result, I am sure people would have been quite distressed and disturbed."

Quakes are relatively unusual in Australia's populated east due to its position in the middle of the Indo-Australian Tectonic Plate, according to Geoscience Australia. The quake on Wednesday measured higher than the country's deadliest tremor, a 5.6 in Newcastle in 1989, which resulted in 13 deaths.

The mayor of Mansfield, Mark Holcombe, said he was in his home office on his farm when the quake struck and ran outside for safety.

"I have been in earthquakes overseas before and it seemed to go on longer than I have experienced before," Holcombe told the ABC. "The other thing that surprised me was how noisy it was. It was a real rumbling like a big truck going past."

He knew of no serious damage near the quake epicentre, although some residents reported problems with telecommunications.

No tsunami threat was issued to the Australian mainland, islands or territories, the country's Bureau of Meteorology said in a statement.

The quake presented a potential disruption for anti-lockdown protests expected in Melbourne on Wednesday, which would be the third day of unrest that has reached increasing levels of violence and police response.
