A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck San Francisco Bay Area, making it the strongest quake the region has witnessed in eight years.

The tremor was so strong that it rattled people as buildings began shaking. However, there were no reports of damage or injuries.

According to US Geological Survey, the tremors were recorded at 11.42 am (local time) on Tuesday about 12 miles (19 kilometres) east of San Jose, which is about 40 miles (64 kilometres) southeast of downtown San Francisco.

A 3.1 aftershock followed about five minutes after the initial earthquake, USGS said.

It is being reported that the quake occurred within the Calaveras Fault zone, one of eight major faults in the Bay Area and a branch of the San Andreas fault line.

Speaking to ABC news, Dr Lucy Jones, a seismologist at Center for Science and Society and research associate at Seismological Laboratory at Caltech, has warned that aftershocks as strong as 4.0 earthquake are possible on the Calaveras Fault in the next 24 hours.

"The Calaveras moves more slowly, it has less of the total motion going on there than on the San Andreas, so it moves less often or releases less energy," she was quoted as saying.

"But it seems to have the smaller earthquakes a lot more often. It's considered capable of a six and a half or so. But unlike the San Andreas, it's not going to have, you know, a magnitude eight," she added.

Following a severe earthquake, a Chinese worker cared for his injured coworkers before being lost in the mountains was found and rescued 17 days later.

The 6.6-magnitude earthquake that devastated the southwest Sichuan province earlier this month resulted in at least 93 fatalities and the need to relocate thousands of people into makeshift camps.

On September 5, when the earthquake struck, Gan was on duty alongside his coworker Luo Yong. The two stayed behind to provide first aid to hurt coworkers and prevent floods by releasing water from the dam.

They made an effort to depart the isolated power plant by travelling for around 20 kilometres (12 miles). However, Gan, who has severe short-sightedness, lost his spectacles in the earthquake and found it difficult to get across the steep terrain, according to CNR.

Before the two men parted ways, Luo assisted Gan in making a bed out of moss and bamboo leaves and gave him some wild fruit and bamboo shoots to eat.

Rescuers located Luo on September 8 after he used fire to draw a helicopter's notice, but he had vanished by the time Gan's makeshift shelter was found on September 11.

Powerful earthquake hits off coast of Indonesia's South Sumatra, no casualties reported

In 1655, the English took Jamaica from the Spanish. They began bolstering its defences after realising the strategic value of the port's location at Kingston Harbour's entrance. The harbour, which was already brimming with defences, was enlarged to accommodate ships. Traders rushed to the safe haven in droves. 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Philippines, 4 dead

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake jolted northern Philippines island on early Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said. The tremors caused minor damages and people to flee from their buildings. No casualty or major damage has been reported so far.

According to USGS, the epicentre was about 13 kilometres southeast of the small town of Dolores, with a depth of 10 kilometres.

The shallow but powerful quake struck the mountainous and lightly populated province of Abra on the main island of Luzon at 8:43 am (0043 GMT), the USGS said, after initially measuring the quake at 6.8 magnitude.

The tremor was so strong that it was also felt in the capital Manila city, which is almost more than 400 kilometres away from the epicentre, where the city's metro rail systems had been halted at rush hour after the quake, the transport ministry said.

According to media reports, the senate building in the capital was also evacuated. Renato Solidum, director of the state seismology agency, told DZMM radio station, that the quake could have caused damage in Abra where Dolores is located, but did not see damage in Manila.

"The quake was very strong," Sergio told AFP, adding that there were minor cracks in the police station building.
