With hundreds of people badly injured, the toll continues to rise as survivors continue to be searched among the rubble by the rescue workers. According to Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan around 912 people lost their lives in 10 Turkish provinces, stated the news agency. The agency added that 5,400 people suffered injuries. Meanwhile, in Syria, the death toll increased to 592 with more than 1,000 injured, stated the Syrian state media. He added that a hospital also turned into rubbles in the Mediterranean coastal city of Iskanderoun, however, no casualties were known so far. “Unfortunately, at the same time, we are also struggling with extremely severe weather conditions,” Oktay added. He further stated that they have deployed around 2,800 search and rescue teams in the disaster-stricken areas. As per reports, the region was struck by the earthquake at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) and a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles), stated the US agency said. The earthquake was also felt by people in Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus, as residents rushed to the snowy streets. As per a Reuters witness, the tremor lasted for a minute and even shattered the windows. After 15 minutes, the region suffered a 6.7-magnitude aftershock. Horrific news of tonight’s earthquake in #Turkey & northern #Syria — the damage looks extensive. "Paintings fell off the walls in the house. I woke up terrified. Now we’re all dressed and standing at the door,” said Samer, a resident of Syria's capital Damascus. The witnesses reported that people were seen running on foot in the streets of Damascus as well as the Lebanese cities of Tripoli and Beirut. Turkish Red Cross stated that resources are being mobilised for the region and people have been appealed to evacuate damaged houses. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tweeted, “search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched” to the areas hit by the quake. "We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage," he added. At least six aftershocks were felt by people as Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu appealed them to avoid entering the damaged buildings because of the risks. “Our priority is to bring out people trapped under ruined buildings and to transfer them to hospitals,” he stated. However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that the California earthquake did not pose any tsunami threat. Several regions of Southern California felt the tremors, said the reports. The aftershocks ranged from 2.6 to 3.5 in magnitude. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the California earthquake did not cause any significant damage to infrastructure or people. Following the 4.2 magnitude earthquake in California, the fire department initiated a 470 square-mile survey of Los Angeles.

At least three shocks from the California earthquake hit several regions around Malibu beach on Wednesday morning. The last shock wave hit somewhere around 17 kilometres from Malibu, California, United States.

However, it is not the first time an earthquake of a larger magnitude has hit California. On December 20, 2022, tremors of 6.4 magnitudes struck California. The epicentre of the much deadlier California earthquake was about 10 miles southwest of Ferndale, California, in Humboldt County. It killed at least two people due to the shortage of response towards medical emergencies and caused damage to several buildings.

A humongous iceberg the size of Greater London has broken off an Antarctic ice shelf. This is the second such break in around two years, said researchers as they announced the latest event on Monday.

The break happened near the United Kingdom's Antarctic-based Halley Research Station. However, as per glaciologists at the research station, the facility remains unaffected by the event.

As per the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the chunk measures 1,550 square kilometres or 598 square miles. It detached from the 150-metre-thick Brunt Ice Shelf around a decade after scientists first spotted the crack known as Chasm-1.

"This calving event has been expected and is part of the natural behaviour of the Brunt Ice Shelf," said BAS glaciologist Dominic Hodgson. "It is not linked to climate change," he added.

Indonesia's Java island was hit by a strong earthquake on Saturday, injuring one person and rocking the same town which suffered devastation due to a tremor last month, leaving more than 330 people dead.

The earthquake's magnitude was 5.7 with a depth of 112 kilometres (70 miles) and the epicentre was 18 kilometres southeast of the West Java city of Banjar, the United States Geological Survey reported.

However, the meteorological agency of Indonesia, known as BMKG, claimed that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4, which shook the capital's buildings.

The chief of Indonesia's national disaster mitigation said that one person was injured and taken to hospital. No reports surfaced of any other casualties or damage.

The BMKG reported the buildings in the West Java town of Garut shook due to the quake and hence, the residents staying near the epicentre were warned about potential aftershocks.

However, it said that the earthquake did not indicate any threat of a tsunami in the future. Garut's local rescue chief Budi Satria said no significant damage took place due to the earthquake.

"Some people ran outside when the earthquake happened but when it calmed down, they went back to their activities. Thank God, so far everything is safe," he added.
